WILD OBSERVER WHAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW SUMMER MIGHT BE FADING TO A CLOSE, GIVING WAY TO THE AUTUMN SEASON, BUT MANY ANIMALS AND PLANTS ARE UP AND ACTIVE.

D

uring the months of August and September, a plethora of wildlife species can be observed thriving in their natural habitats.

As summer transitions into fall, many animals are industriously preparing for the forthcoming winter season. Some are undertaking extensive migrations to warmer climates in search of food and favourable living conditions, which is a testament to their survival instincts. Among the most commonly spotted species during these transitional months are deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species, including geese and ducks.

The skies and fields are also teeming with insects like butterflies and dragonflies, which are completing their life cycles and making the most of the last warm days before the onset of autumnal weather.

As the days grow shorter and temperatures begin to drop, you may also observe an increase in the activity levels of certain mammals. Squirrels and chipmunks, for instance, are busily gathering and storing food to sustain themselves through the winter months. They are often seen scurrying around, collecting nuts and seeds with remarkable diligence. Bears, on the other hand, are foraging heavily to build up their fat reserves in anticipation of their long hibernation period. These majestic creatures are particularly active in areas abundant with berries and other high-calorie foods, making the most of the available resources.

In aquatic environments, fish such as salmon are embarking on their incredible journey upstream to spawn, completing a crucial part of their life cycle. This remarkable migration, often fraught with numerous obstacles, is a vital event for the survival of the species.

Amphibians like frogs and salamanders also become more visible during this time as they prepare for the colder months ahead. They often seek out suitable places to hibernate, ensuring their safety and survival through the winter.

Gardens and meadows are buzzing with activity as bees and other pollinators tirelessly work to gather the last of the nectar and pollen from remaining flowers. This period is critical for these insects as they collect enough resources to sustain their colonies through the winter. The buzzing activity in gardens and meadows is a testament to the intricate and essential role these pollinators play in maintaining ecological balance.

Overall, August and September are dynamic and vibrant months in the natural world, offering a unique opportunity to observe a wide range of wildlife behaviors and interactions. WOOD MOUSE SPOTLIGHT

This month, we’re focusing on one of the special september species. wood mice are particularly active as they prepare for the colder months ahead. These small, nocturnal rodents are busy gathering and storing food to ensure they have enough supplies to last through the winter. They are known to collect seeds, nuts, and fruits, which they stash in various hiding spots such as underground burrows, tree cavities, and even beneath logs. This behavior is crucial for their survival, as it allows them to have a steady food source when resources become scarce.
