AS SPRING UNLOCKS We can both agree that spring is simply a gorgeous season. For us, the bloom of colour inspires us to be even more so creative.

As children, both of us had a massive love for fairytales and fantasy something that was carried out into our adult lives.

In Sally's childhood, her love was sparked by a legendary writer of fairytale and fantasy Enid Blyton (Read more about her work that changed the genre on page 14). Sally's favourite literature in particular was The Magic Faraway Tree (published in 1943). Her passion then continued into her adulthood with one thing in particular - the Labyrinth and illustrator Brian Froud, and since then her passions continue today.

In Lucy's childhood, a mix of her imagination and her favourite childhood fairy Tinkerbell sparked her passion for fairytales and fantasy. In later life, Lucy's passion for the fairytale and fantasy genre came from spending a lot of time in the young adult section of the library - reading and watching everything from the Shannara Chronicles, The Chronicles of Narnia, Shadowhunters and Harry Potter. Lucy's love for fantasy and fairytale literature can go the world over.

Next month the Spellbound team are delighted to bring you three realm specials - in the enchanted realms we delve into the world of Art Nouveau, in the dark realms we head into the World of Goth and finally in the cosplay realm we discover the world of Marvel.

Uncovering the origins of

Fairytales + Fantasy WRITTEN BY LUCY MORRIS The Fairytale and Fantasy genre is embedded in everyone's lives at one stage or another. The origins of the fairytale and fantasy genre can be traced back to ancient mythology stories, which, in their most basic form, would delve into the workings of nature.

You might have heard the mythological story of Prometheus - a being that felt pity for mortal humanity on planet earth so he gave the gift of fire - bringing around the real-life story of where the element of fire was introduced at the very beginning of time during our early human evolution.

This is an example of many supernatural qualities of mythology stories that got fed into the elements of the fairytale and fantasy genre.

From there, epics and legends became the next elements that were embedded in the fantasy genre. Beowult was released in c.700 and is the oldest surviving English epic poem, introducing the elements of the beginning of the fantasy genre - containing monsters, witches, and dragons within its pages.

The legend of King Arthur, which was released around the same time has been told again and again as the years have progressed forward.

The next piece of literature to emerge from within the fantasy genre was Willaim Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (released in 1595) brought up the imaginary world of fairies - in an era where fairies were thought of as odd and mysterious.

Another part of the element of the fantasy genre came from children's fairy tales. This particular part of the genre was published by two brothers, Grimm and Charles Perrault. The two brothers travelled across the German countryside for 13 years in the 1800s, gathering fairy tales as told by word of mouth from the village people. These tales included the famous Cinderella and Snow White - bringing forward a now popular fairytale story to the modern world's Disney princesses.

Moving forward to the 20th century, there was one author that was crucial to the fantasy genre at this time. That author was Edith Nesbit, who altered and refreshed the fantasy genre: her stories such as A Book of Dragons (released in 1900), Five Children and It (in 1902), The Phoenix and the Carpet (in 1904) and The Story of the Amulet (released in 1906). With Edith Nesbit's style, she laid down the fresh foundations of the use of magic within the fantasy literature genre. Especially within Five Children and It, Nesbit brought about the awe of childhood colliding with magic - that was later picked up and adapted further by famous Harry Potter author JK Rowling.

Today, the fantasy genre spans not just the children's area but also young adults and adults - stories such as the famous books and now film adaptations such as The Hobbit + Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Shannara Chronicles and Harry Potter have kept the fantasy genre alive in this and the next generation of fantasy lovers. One thing is certain, that the genre fantasy will never lose its magic.

FrightFest was conceived by Paul McEvoy, Ian Rattray, and Alan Jones and staged its first event in 2000 at the Prince Charles cinema, off London's Leicester Square. Its August Bank Holiday weekend date has remained a fixture ever since. Greg Day, their long-serving PR man, joined the company as a co-director in 2006.

The objective of FrightFest was to provide the UK with a horror fantasy festival of similar stature to the market leaders in Europe, Sitges (Spain) and Brussels (Belgium). FrightFest has since evolved into a community where audiences and guests alike travel from all over the world to be part of the event's unique atmosphere.

Expect scary thrills and gory spills as the FrightFest masses descend on GFT again to deliver their own unique brand of off-kilter genre cinema at its finest. Bringing your own pillow to hide behind is optional!

FrightFest returns to GFF, delivering your yearly dose of horror-fantasy cinema.

Films will screen across the weekend beginning on 9 March.

The Faery Forest

Elaramoon is a one-woman brand created by costume designer and maker, Meg Henry.

Meg creates bespoke gowns and accessories inspired by her love of all things magic and history.

Based in rural Yorkshire, England, Elaramoon takes a zero-waste, sustainable approach to design.

Each unique piece is created almost entirely from repurposed materials, with all textile waste produced during the making process being recycled in-house.

Meg has created pieces for weddings, theatre, reenactment, photoshoots, and the list goes on!

In 2016 I graduated with a BFA in drawing/painting, and I always thought I would continue this route with my career. But, I had the idea for The Faery Forest in the back of my mind for years, and it wasn't until after I graduated that I knew faeries were my true calling. I knew then that I needed to take a risk and try it - and I am so grateful that I did. That same year in November I opened my shop online and began selling pieces, and it's grown ever since.

In 2014 'Powdered and Waisted' was officially launched.

Based near Nottingham, England, I have a small workroom in my home and make every item myself, using the finest cotton, satins, and silks if requested, can recycle and integrate modern, vintage, and antique fabrics and trims into my designs. All internal steelwork, busks, core fabrics, and threads are modern and new.

Her Clothing, Costume, Accessory, and Jewelry designs have appeared in Movies, Music Videos, TV Series, Fashion Runways, Las Vegas shows, and on Broadway.
