INTERVIEW WITH VINITA PILLAY SWM: Hi Vinita, please introduce yourself to our readers, describing a little bit about yourself and your journey as a model. VP: Hello!! My name is Vinita and I’m a model from Canada. I’ve recently started modelling about a year and a half ago and since then I’ve had the pleasure of taking part in many creative projects! My goal as a model is to advocate for body positivity and inclusivity, and to hopefully inspire other young women around the world! SWM: What inspired you to get into the creative industry, was there a specific reason or role model that inspired you to take this career path? VP: Growing up I struggled to find models that represented my ethnic background in all forms of media. I have always loved high fashion and being the best dressed in school. However, I was conflicted as my appearance never matched what the other models looked like, which led to feelings of inadequacy and insecurities with regards to my skin tone. This is what got me started into modelling. I wanted to be that inspiration for other South Asian women because it is important to me that we acknowledge all forms of diversity as everyone is unique and everyone has something special to offer. SWM: The photoshoot is absolutely beautiful, what was your particular favourite image out of the selection as the model of this shoot? VP: If I’m being honest, I think they are all absolutely stunning and are wonderful wedding-themed looks! If I had to choose, I would say images number 4 (of myself), 5 (landscape image of me and Harrisen), or 10 (me and Harrisen sat at a table) as they are ethereal and capture the dreamy vibes perfectly! SWM: What was your favourite part of this particular shoot/day, what contributed to the success of the final outcome for you? VP: The whole shoot felt like a fairy tale! I think the best part was that I got to model with my partner. Looking back at the photos I feel overwhelmed with love and joy as if we were getting married for real. SWM: In a few words, how would you describe your personal modelling genre? Are you more of a wedding model or do you cover other genres such as fashion, editorial etc? VP: Personally, I consider myself a versatile model. I pretty much do all types of modelling but in recent work, I have been enjoying high fashion, beauty and editorial-style shoots. I think in the future I want to continue pursuing high fashion and creative shoots!

SWM: What is your favourite part of preparing for a shoot as a model? For example, Getting ready with hair and makeup, the outfits, meeting new people, or exploring shoot locations? VP: I think every aspect is exciting! I mean who doesn’t love to play dress up? Modelling is almost like acting because you get to play pretend and tell a story through photos. What’s that saying...”A picture is worth a thousand words”? As cheesy as it sounds, I do believe this to be true, even for creative shoots. The memories I have made while shooting this with my partner are some of the best we have had! Not only that, but I enjoy meeting other creatives within the industry and developing that network is so important to me. SWM: As a model how does collaborating with other creatives help you create your best work? VP: As mentioned previously, being able to connect with other local artists is vital as people don’t realize how much work goes on behind the scenes of a creative shoot. Things such as location scouting, colour theme, outfits, hair, makeup, skin prep, decor, everything is interconnected. I find it’s the little details that can make or break a photo so it’s really important to collaborate with people to take some of that weight off your shoulders. Doing so allows you to focus on your poses, expressions etc.. without having to worry about the rest. Sometimes it is about getting one foot in the door to allow you to meet others who share the same values you may have and therefore present new opportunities you may not have otherwise known about. SWM: We know being in front of the camera can sometimes make models be a little vulnerable and can be tiring. What do you do to prepare yourself before a shoot to ensure you model the best you can? VP: This seems like a no-brainer but exercise, positive affirmations, getting sufficient sleep, as well as eating and staying hydrated are so important!! All of these factors play an important role in stabilizing your mental and physical well-being and it often gets overlooked. I cannot stress this enough, in order for you to be your best in front of the camera, you NEED to ensure that you are meeting your body’s basic needs first. Even though realistically speaking you may not be able to hit all of these, the point is you just have to try and make an effort to achieve this. I personally struggle with eating regularly so I try to bring small snacks that I can munch throughout the day. With regards to exercising, keep your goals small and easily attainable. Even if it is as little as 10 mins/day, any bit of exercise is better than nothing. Another point I wanted to briefly touch on was positive affirmations. It may feel silly at first but these little “mantras” over time can help boost your self-confidence and diminish the voice of doubt in your head.

SWM: We can see you have worked on lots of cool projects, what has been your favourite to do so far? VP: This is a hard one! I believe each shoot had something different to offer and allowed me to express myself in so many cool ways. This current shoot is my favourite wedding-themed creative, but I have done a lot of cool work with Mr. H Studios and Crystal Tsang, which are by far some of my best work yet. SWM: Do you have a dream brand/creative you would love to work with? VP: My dream is to eventually make my way into Paris Fashion Shows or even work with big brands for skin care such as L’Oréal, but I’m open to anything !! My main goal is to continue to prove to everyone that I have something unique to offer as a model and to continue to spread awareness that everyBODY is beautiful. SWM: Are there any techniques or tricks you’ve learned to keep improving your modelling skills? VP: Practice, practice, practice! Look at poses, practice in front of a mirror, mimic other models and work with your body to see what works for you and what doesn’t. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to modelling. Be creative, have fun and more importantly, be your authentic self! SWM: Do you have any advice for our readers who may want to start modelling? VP: Just do it! I had my doubts too, but you have to believe in yourself even when no one else will. Never let others speak doubt into you. SWM: What projects are you working on next is there anything you can share that you will be working on going forward? VP: I can’t say much but I do have some fun work that is going to be released soon with Mr. H Studios, stay tuned for more! SWM: Where can our readers go to support and follow your work?
