We welcome local rivals Billingham Synthonia to the Sportdrome this afternoon. We have 6 games left this season and we need to use these 6 games to start to establish a style, mentality and attitude for preseason and next season. We are a young squad and will again this summer take in some of this season’s U18’s and U16’s, keeping our average age of squad around the 20 year old mark. We do however have a number of “senior players” who have been with us since we started 5 seasons ago and have had the strength of character t o stay with the squad through our hard seasons. These senior players need to start to have a belief in themselves and each other and take on the responsibility to drag us through the games we should be winning and turning some of our good performances into points. I also need to focus on why I started the team with Peter (and with Ian coming onboard early in that 1st season). It was started to give the better players of the junior section an outlet into senior football at a good standard of football. On reflection we have come a long way over the last 2-3 seasons in terms of performance and that is something we should all be proud of. That said playing well and winning games is much more enjoyable and makes it easier in training and on cold winter days . Our last performance against St Mary’s was, despite only having one defender, a good one but another game when the result could have been so much better if we hadn’t gifted the opposition goals. 6 games left, 6 performances please lads!

COME ON BLUES !!!!

A CHARTER STANDARD DEVELOPMENT CLUB

5

2010 / 2011

The Intermediates founded when former U18 manager and BTJFC Secretary Peter Cooper and John Swanson came together to put together an adult team for the junior section. Both agreed that the Teesside league would be a good challenge and both had the same vision, to have a team where the players from the junior section could stay with the club once they had finished their junior football. The first season proved difficult on many levels; 42 players coming and going, organising a strip and pitches and most significantly the devastating death of Peter in October 2010. Ian Murray then the U18 manager joined the management team. A difficult season saw only 1 win in29 games... but the basis of a squad to go into the next season, and true to the philosophy that Peter had held, the majority had been former Junior players. 2011 / 2012

With a core of lads from the previous season and some of Ian's former U18 lads, the season looked to be full of promise, however the step up for the new lads and trying to gel the squads together saw the season start off where it finished the previous season, winless, however the results were encouraging. Once the team had it's first win under it's belt it went on an unbeaten run of 8 games. With the odd win/draw towards the end of the season...the results did not reflect the performances. The team had now started to develop a style of it's own, playing some attractive football, the highlight of the season had to be away to Northallerton Academy 2-0 down at half time, Town outplayed Northallerton to win 3-2 playing some great football, showing great character and both starting and finishing with 10 former Junior players... the foundation well and truly in place. Thanks to the hard work of Ian The team got new strips through a sponsorship agreement with RA DALTON. whose support is still much appreciated. 2012 / 2013

A more settled squad started the season playing a good style of football however a string of long term injuries to key players disrupted the season. Again the squad struggled for points and goals but the last 9 games of the season saw a more settled team start to play the football it promised early on. The highlight being the 2-1 win at Lingdale the first team to defeat champions (1 of only 2 clubs to do it) The season again saw progress both on and off the pitch with the addition to the coaching staff of goalkeeping coach Peter Laverick.

The squad has 25 former junior players out of the 32 signed on continuing the philosophy that the team was set up to fulfil 2013 / 2014

We

started the season at a new ground, Northfield sportsdrome and now have the support of the Whitehouse Pub who provide after match refreshments …… Massive thanks !!! Our Football continued to go from the ridiculous to the sublime, some great moves and goals but games where we fell apart in sections of the game and got punished. This will happen with a young team but in the coming season we will look for those players now in their 5th season, even though they are still young, to step up to the plate. The season started off badly with Cooky suffering a double fracture but it did save us 3 points, happily Cooky started training at the end of the season. The emphasis was again on the SQUAD with Muzz starting to work shifts a massive loss for us after his early season form but that is why we needed numbers to turn up to games and training. We did progress off the field and on but again finished bottom ( Billingham Athletic resigning). Lav as leading goal scorer led the line well and finished 2nd highest scorer in Billingham behind Ash Lavan. As a team we need to be more clinical and punish teams mistakes like they punish ours. For the first time we also produced a free match programme and developed to publishing it on-line 2014/2105

A NEW NAME……..

BILLINGHAM FC

Now

going into our 5th season we welcome the 3rd group of young lads to come through from the juniors. Many have had a taste over the last couple of seasons on an ad-hoc basis and we will look to integrate them fully into the squad which I expect to be a little smaller this season but also a season wiser. We have introduced Beth Pounder to the management team in the closed season. Beth is a qualified Sports Scientist and will deal with players injuries and rehabilitation. Beth is also a former Billingham Junior Let’s see what this season brings!!!

Hamstring Strain Injury Management Firstly, the hamstring muscle is made up of three individual muscles, the semi-membranosus, semi-tendinosus and biceps femoris, any one of these muscles can be affected. A common mechanism of injury for hamstring strains usually involves sprinting to which the head of the bicep femoris muscle at the lower end of the thigh is strained. There are three grades of hamstring strain based on how severe the injury is: Grade 1: Slight tear to some fibres of the muscle (Tightness in the back of the thigh but can walk normally, they will be aware of some discomfort and will be unable to run at their full speed) Grade 2: Partial tear to the hamstring muscles (The athletes walking gait will be affected, usually with a limp, pain will be present during activity and swelling will also be noticeable) Grade 3: Full rupture of the muscle or severe strain (A tear to half or all of the muscle, the athlete will need crutches, may have severe pain and swelling and weakness in the muscle. Bruising will usually appear 24 hours after the occurrence of the injury) Initial Management For the first 24 hours the PRICE Protocol should be followed. Protection, rest, ice every hour for 10-15 minutes combined with compression and elevation, this will help reduce pain, swelling and minimise bleeding in the muscle. After the first day Ice should be applied every 2 to 3 hours for 10-15 minutes at a time. Later‌ After the Initial management, stretching and strengthening rehabilitation programmes should be followed. Stretching exercises include raising the leg straight above your head and holding for 8 to 10 seconds at a time and performing this 3 times, each time the flexibility of the individual should increase and the leg will go further. Isometric contraction exercises are good for strengthening the hamstrings; this means holding a position for a short period of time, for example holding the lunge position is a perfect example of an isometric contraction to strengthen the hamstrings. Rehabilitation programmes should be made specific to each individual and should be advised by a professional.

In the only two second division games played, Loftus Athletic defeated Kader FC 5-1 thanks to a Joe Jackson 6th minute opener, Matthew Griffin made it 2-0 before a Liam Coulter penalty pulled it back to 2-1 but a Martyn Say hat trick secured the Loftus victory and Cargo Fleet AFC surprisingly defeated St Mary’s College 4-2, Luke Pink gave Fleet a 3rd minute lead, Jonny Squires pulled it back to 1-1 at half time, five minutes into the second half James Myers made it 2-1 to Fleet, Sean Harland then made it 3-1 on the hour and an own goal made it 4-1 before Jack Sedgwick made it a final score of 4-2.

Billingham FC would like to thank the Junior section for their continued support. This year we have 21 ex junior members in the squad

www.clubwebsite.co.uk/billinghamjuniorsfc

We’ve received a cheque from THE BILLINGHAM LEGACY FOUNDATION for £453 to buy the squad rain jackets and sub-suits. This is another fantastic step forward for the senior squad and further reinforces everything we’re trying to do with Billingham FC/ Billingham Juniors FC. The Billingham Legacy Foundation Ltd is a limited by guarantee not for profit company which has been established to administer on behalf of the Billingham Community ‘The Billingham Legacy Fund’. for more information or indeed how you can help please follow the link http://www.billinghamlegacyfoundation.co.uk/
