Firstly let me wish you alla Happy New Year and hope 2015 will be a good year for you and your families. The extended Christmas break, our last game was a cup game on the 20th December, has allowed some of our injured players time to recover. We welcome back Johno, Dave R, Steely, Jack and Greavsey. We are still missing Brock, Cooky and Tom P but the squad is in a much healthier position than before the break and that showed with 18 at the 1st training session of the year. Our last league game, away to Guisborough saw us leave with all 3 points and a 3-4 score line. The number of chances we created was similar to the cup game on the 20th, we really must start putting these early chances away to take the pressure off the defence and to give us the results our football has deserved. A healthy turn out is also important to put pressure on the starting 11 to ensure they keep their places. We welcome Staithes Athletic to Northfield this weekend having already made the journey to the coast earlier in the season. 0-0 was te score line and we had Andy Martin to thank for that with a solid display between the sticks. Again we had our chances but failed to put them away but the feeling on the day was that we had worked hard for our point as well as riding a bit of luck. If we play the way we know we can for the rest of the season then who knows where we will end but it’s up to the lads to make sure we take that opportunity.
COME ON
BLUES !!!! A CHARTER STANDARD DEVELOPMENT CLUB
5
2010 / 2011
The Intermediates founded when former U18 manager and BTJFC Secretary Peter Cooper and John Swanson came together to put together an adult team for the junior section. Both agreed that the Teesside league would be a good challenge and both had the same vision, to have a team where the players from the junior section could stay with the club once they had finished their junior football. The first season proved difficult on many levels; 42 players coming and going, organising a strip and pitches and most significantly the devastating death of Peter in October 2010. Ian Murray then the U18 manager joined the management team. A difficult season saw only 1 win in29 games... but the basis of a squad to go into the next season, and true to the philosophy that Peter had held, the majority had been former Junior players. 2011 / 2012
With a core of lads from the previous season and some of Ian's former U18 lads, the season looked to be full of promise, however the step up for the new lads and trying to gel the squads together saw the season start off where it finished the previous season, winless, however the results were encouraging. Once the team had it's first win under it's belt it went on an unbeaten run of 8 games. With the odd win/draw towards the end of the season...the results did not reflect the performances. The team had now started to develop a style of it's own, playing some attractive football, the highlight of the season had to be away to Northallerton Academy 2-0 down at half time, Town outplayed Northallerton to win 3-2 playing some great football, showing great character and both starting and finishing with 10 former Junior players... the foundation well and truly in place. Thanks to the hard work of Ian The team got new strips through a sponsorship agreement with RA DALTON. whose support is still much appreciated. 2012 / 2013
A more settled squad started the season playing a good style of football however a string of long term injuries to key players disrupted the season. Again the squad struggled for points and goals but the last 9 games of the season saw a more settled team start to play the football it promised early on. The highlight being the 2-1 win at Lingdale the first team to defeat champions (1 of only 2 clubs to do it) The season again saw progress both on and off the pitch with the addition to the coaching staff of goalkeeping coach Peter Laverick.
The squad has 25 former junior players out of the 32 signed on continuing the philosophy that the team was set up to fulfil 2013 / 2014
We
started the season at a new ground, Northfield sportsdrome and now have the support of the Whitehouse Pub who provide after match refreshments …… Massive thanks !!! Our Football continued to go from the ridiculous to the sublime, some great moves and goals but games where we fell apart in sections of the game and got punished. This will happen with a young team but in the coming season we will look for those players now in their 5th season, even though they are still young, to step up to the plate. The season started off badly with Cooky suffering a double fracture but it did save us 3 points, happily Cooky started training at the end of the season. The emphasis was again on the SQUAD with Muzz starting to work shifts a massive loss for us after his early season form but that is why we needed numbers to turn up to games and training. We did progress off the field and on but again finished bottom ( Billingham Athletic resigning). Lav as leading goal scorer led the line well and finished 2nd highest scorer in Billingham behind Ash Lavan. As a team we need to be more clinical and punish teams mistakes like they punish ours. For the first time we also produced a free match programme and developed to publishing it on-line 2014/2105
A NEW NAME……..
BILLINGHAM FC
Now
going into our 5th season we welcome the 3rd group of young lads to come through from the juniors. Many have had a taste over the last couple of seasons on an ad-hoc basis and we will look to integrate them fully into the squad which I expect to be a little smaller this season but also a season wiser. We have introduced Beth Pounder to the management team in the closed season. Beth is a qualified Sports Scientist and will deal with players injuries and rehabilitation. Beth is also a former Billingham Junior Let’s see what this season brings!!!

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear What is an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury? The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) lies deep within the knee joint, connecting the thigh bone with the shin bone. Its function is to prevent excessive forward movement of the shin in relation to the thigh and also to prevent too much rotation at the knee joint. The ACL can be damaged by either landing from a jump onto a bent knee then twisting, or landing on a knee that is over-extended. Direct contact on the knee from opponents can also cause damage to the ACL. What can you do to prevent an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury? Proprioception training using a wobble board can be very effective as this improves special awareness through the joints and also improves balance. Proprioception can be improved in several ways not just using a wobble board; any exercise involving balancing involves this. Wobble boards are designed to assist the re-education of the proprioceptive system by improving sensory function around the knee. Previous research has also shown that wobble board training improves single leg stance ability and balance, while other studies have suggested that patients who underwent wobble board training experienced significantly fewer knee ligament injuries. What should you do if you suffer an Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury? When the ACL is injured, the first steps to be taken should be to follow the price protocol, like most ligament injuries, the pain and swelling needs to be settled before an orthopaedic consultant can test the injury, as the knee ligament injury will be in the acute stage for the first week. They won’t be able to tell you a lot as they can’t perform the movements to test ligament pain and laxity as well as in severe cases testing if the ligament has fully ruptured. Protection, the injured tissues should be protected from further damage by using a knee brace. Rest from sports is essential, but even excessive walking should be avoided. Ice, the Air cast Knee Cryocuff is the most effective method of providing ice therapy and is the professional's choice. It can provide continuous ice cold water and compression for 6 hours and significantly reduce knee pain and swelling. If using ice, the use of an Ice Bag is recommended for its safe application to avoid the risk of cold burns. Compression can be provided by the intermittent use of an Air cast Knee Cryocuff to reduce knee swelling and relieve pain. Elevation to relieve knee pain and prevent knee swelling, the knee is elevated above waist height. The ACL injury can be damaged and fall into three categories: Grade 1: Partial tear to few fibres, some pain but fully functional. Grade 2: A greater amount of fibres are torn with loss of function to the knee joint Grade 3: Fully ruptured ligament with pain and swelling, great instability and can cause giving way of the knee joint, other structures may be damaged such as the menisci or collateral ligaments either side of the knee. Rehabilitation will usually be the first step in recovery, once tried the consultant may then opt you in for surgery taking a lot of lifestyle factors into consideration before making this decision. Thanks for reading, Beth Pounder (BJFC Sports Therapist).

The juniors held our 1st Christmas party for the mini soccer sides at the Swan in Billingham. A massive thanks to the Swan staff for making the day such a great event and for all the entertainment. The Big fella in Red also mad aan appearance to hand out gifts and our normal selection boxes for every playing member. The adult team received a present also, our training/ warm up kit arrived thanks to a grant from the Teesside Philanthropic society. The u12’s parents and coaching staff did the Boxing day dip at Seaton Carew.... In some great fancy dress costumes and some very cold water to raise funds for the squads trip to Holland in the spring. The first weekend of 2015 was a white out with none of our teams managing a game. Finally can we wish everyone a belated HAPPY NEW YEAR for 2015
We have developed relationships through friendlies and county cup games across the North East in particular Birtley St Josephs, Whickham SC,Coxhoe Athletic and Redcar Athletic. This Year we had friendlies against Bishop Auckland Res, Annfield Plain, and Hartlepool FC As a management team we see this as part of the squads development on and off the field.
