From the editor I have noticed that two things happen when you live through an era of rapid change, as we are now. Firstly, there is an inevitable surge of artistic creativity and second the contrarians, the underdogs and the anti-heroes come into their own. We witness the rise of the rebel: those who don’t play by the normal rules, who flourish in chaotic, unpredictable times and welcome uncertainty without fear. And there are plenty of them around at the moment!

So this edition of Swansea Life is dedicated to those people who like things just a little calmer, occasionally at least. Our pages celebrate life by the coast while still giving varied new voices a place to talk about who they are and what they stand for. I am incredibly proud of what the SL team has created and curated on the pages that follow, from our interview with women overcoming cancer to the latest on everything from fashion to homes and dining out, we have shone the spotlight on inspiring people and ideas which I hope will provoke some stimulating debates. As I write, my inbox is also still brimming with reader suggestions I asked for about what you want to see on our pages. And some of those ideas are now included as a result to get our magazine exactly right for you this summer. Speaking of summer, this is the time of year when we begin to look ahead to the next season in fashion. Our minds are now focused on summer Fridays and far-flung holidays, so this issue also guides you through what’s new with an A to Z guide to the season’s big ideas. . When it comes to going on holiday, our beauty section is there to cover all your travel needs, with our team of experts singling out their favourite makeup, hair and skincare products to take with you. And if your summer plans don’t involve getting on a plane and maybe you are staying put here this year, fret not. Our pages also include a round-up of one or two of the coolest and most exciting places to visit or maybe eat at right here in south-west Wales.

guilt free With the weather feeling more like mid-October than mid-July, I’m not particularly keen on splashing out on overtly summery pieces: it seems likely they’ll only get one or two wears on holiday, then they’ll be in storage until this time next year. Instead, I’ve been on the hunt for a versatile buy I can wear well into autumn, without feeling guilty about potentially not giving them much airtime over the summer and this lovely Bonmarche number caught my eye at £19.99

MEN’S STYLE Men are closing the style gap with women by demanding as much variety in fashion as they do in food and drink, according to latest trend surveys.

Men are more sophisticated than they used to be. In fact, they’re nearly as sophisticated as women in terms of consuming. And they expect the same variety of clothes that women have expected for years. It’s a generational shift, say those in the know. Guys in their late teens or early twenties have no qualms about fashion and they expect the same variety as they do with food. best dressed How to be the

wedding guest this summer

You’re excited about the impending nuptials of your nearest and dearest, of course, but with it comes the anxiety attached to the question of what to wear. Our biggest tip for wedding season is not to wait until wedding season to start thinking about your outfit, because the chance of you finding something that fits and looks good and that makes you stand out in a crowd is very slim when you’re actually looking for something. Do your shopping well ahead of the big day to make sure you wow too!

Before and after hair replacement

Do you want to get the best out of your hair?

Crown Hair’s hair laser therapy is a proven and effective method to stimulate hair re-growth and thicken existing hair and it’s particularly successful for clients with early signs of thinning and hair loss – typically within the first five years. The clinical laser uses Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) that gently and safely stimulates the hair follicle just below the scalp lining. This therapy increases the blood flow to the follicles, allowing for more nutrients to be delivered and therefore stabilising hair loss and encouraging re-growth. Results can vary from client to client with a typical success rate in excess of 80%. The laser therapy is completely safe and pain free and clients can achieve the best results when used in conjunction with MGT topical products. A programme will be tailored to your requirements and includes the MGT topical products. As early as the first treatment, users report that their hair feels livelier, more manageable and that their scalp feels a lot healthier Having better hair days, noticing a more vibrant shine, having less itchy scalp and experiencing significantly decreased hair fallout are just a few of the immediate benefits of using hair therapy 24 SWANSEA LIFE

update your look with these catwalk beauty ideas

L iz Connor reveals her hot picks – so you can tone, stretch and soothe stress while in the comfort of your own home

If there’s one thing you need in your makeup bag in order to be on trend this summer, it’s an eyeliner. Make-up artists at the spring/summer 2019 shows were getting creative with the cosmetic classic, whipping up feline flicks and ‘floating’ wings that looked so cool on the catwalks. But you don’t have to be a model – or a make-up pro – to rock this season’s incredible eyes trend, it just take a bit of practice and the right products. Here’s how to create four stunning backstage looks, plus our pick of the best luxury eyeliners to help you get the look...

1. The bright wing

 3ina The Cream Eyeshadow 305, £12.95

At Versace, make-up legend Pat McGrath gave the models a glamorous winged look that was actually created with eyeshadow in a metallic aqua blue shade. It takes a steady hand and a very fine brush to shade in the swooping shape with a powder pigment, but it’s much easier if you use an eye pencil to outline the wing first, then fill it in with a cream eyeshadow.

 Topshop Kajal Eyeliner In Lucky, £10

Try Benefit’s new Bad Gal 24-hour eye Pencil, which launches in July, followed by 3ina Cream Eyeshadow.  Benefit Bad Gal Bang! 24 Hour Eye Pencil Midnight Blue, £18.50

3ina The Cream eyeshadow 305, £12.95, available from 3ina

Topshop Kajal eyeliner In Lucky, £10, available from Benefit Bad Gal Bang! Topshop 24-hour eye pencil midnight blue, £18.50

Luxe liners: 5 premium picks that won’t let you down  Laura Mercier Caviar intense ink waterproof liquid eyeliner, £22, Space NK  Givenchy liner disturbia black, £21.15 (was £23.50), Debenhams  Chanel Stylo Yeux waterproof black wood, £22 Laura Mercier Caviar Intense ink waterproof liquid eyeliner, £22, available from Space NK

26 SWANSEA LIFE

Givenchy Liner Disturbia black, £21.15 (was £23.50), available from Givenchy

Chanel Stylo Yeux waterproof black wood, £22, available from Chanel

Tom Ford Emotionproof Eyeliner Dominateur, £32, available from Tom Ford

Armani Beauty Eyes to Kill designer eyeliner Onyx, £31, available from Armani Beauty

 Tom Ford Emotionproof eyeliner Dominateur, £32  Armani Beauty Eyes to Kill designer eyeliner onyx, £31

3. The double wing At Peter Dundas, the Eighties-inspired collection of metallic mini dresses was complemented with a cool doublewinged liner look. To get the glam feline feel, start with a wash of shimmering gold eyeshadow, then use a black liquid eyeliner to draw a sharp wing that extends from the inner corner, finishing in line with the end of your eyebrow. Do the same just under your lower lashline, but leave a gap so that the wings don’t connect.  BareMinerals shimmer eyeshadow Queen Phyllis, £13.50, John Lewis

4. The floating flick For Chanel’s annual Metiers d’Art show, which for 2018/19 was held in New York, global creative make-up and colour director Lucia Pica gave models a modern-day Cleopatra feel, with a thick floating flick that extended up to the eye crease. This may not be a look you want to rock on the regular, but why not give it a go for festival season? It works with either an eye pencil or liquid liner and the good news is you don’t have to be ultra-precise with your line – think of it as an arty avant-garde experiment rather than a make-up masterclass.

suitcase essentials Liz Connor asks health experts to share their must-have items for your next sunny getaway When it comes to packing for a summer holiday, however, we all tend to remember the wardrobe essentials – bikinis, flip-flops and beach cover-ups. But what about first aid and healthcare essentials? From rehydration sachets and insect repellent, to decent sun protection, planning for your health while you’re away can prepare you for any unfortunate holiday mishaps – and we all know a painful case of whole-body sunburn can make or break your precious time away. Here are some of items you shouldn’t forget to pack in your suitcase...

1. Beat the burn with sun protection When it’s sunny, it’s tempting to throw on your swimmers and head straight for the pool, but spare a thought for your unprotected skin. While an appropriate amount of sun is good for us (as it creates vitamin D), too much time in the sun’s rays can cause sunburn, skin cancer and premature ageing – so protecting your skin is paramount. When buying sunscreen, look for a factor of at least 15 to protect against UVB and at least four-star UVA protection.

yourself that you’ve woken up, you’ve slept and you’re going to feel fine and have a good day. This way you’re less likely to see any negative impacts,” she says. “There are techniques that can be used to get back to sleep, including taking a supplement such as Benenox Overnight Recharge (£9.99, Boots), which can help settle your nervous system,” she adds.

3. Treat your feet with dry heel balm “Wearing thin-soled, unsupportive shoes like summery flip-flops creates stresses on the foot that increases the creation of hard skin,” podiatrist Emma Supple warns. “Keeping skin well-moisturised with the daily application of a good quality urea-based foot balm is a really great habit to get into because your skin is a marvel and, when wellnourished, can fix its own problems.”

4. Manage bug bites with antihistamine cream Although not usually serious, insect bites are a nuisance and can cause itchy, sore skin.

LloydsPharmacy pharmacist Matt CourtneySmith says: “Besides UVA and UVB rays, Infrared-A radiation within the sun’s rays can also cause damage to the skin in a similar way to that of UV radiation. There are sun creams available that provide protection against UVA, UVB and Infrared-A radiation. You should check that your sun cream is within date, and you shouldn’t use sun cream which is over two to three years old.”

“Bites can cause a range of symptoms, including a red, swollen lump on the skin and itchiness,” explains Courtney-Smith. “Some people may have a mild allergic reaction to a bite, and this can cause it to become swollen and painful.”

2. Beat jet lag with a sleep supplement

“For milder symptoms, an antihistamine cream (such as Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream, £3.99, LloydsPharmacy) can help soothe itchiness caused by bites and may also help to reduce swelling around the area.”

Sleep expert Dr Nerina Ramlakhan suggests it’s a case of mind over matter, believing that a little self-suggestion can go a long way. “Tell

COVER up t h e d o ’s a n d d o n t ’s

Make-up artists offer Katie Wright their pro tips for perfect application every time. Here are six common concealer mistakes and how to avoid them...

For its ability to cover up even the nastiest acne breakouts, and to make us look wide awake when we feel like death, concealer is a true make-up marvel. But when it goes wrong? It can go really wrong. Anna Vakili, a contestant on this year’s Love Island, has taken a bit of a hammering on social media, thanks to her choice of under-eye make-up products. “Anna, babe, blend out your under-eye concealer... and for the love of all make-up gods do not use that much ever again,” was one of many comments on Twitter.

layer all over the face, or on areas where you typically find breakdown of make-up during the day.”

2 Choosing the wrong formula Your choice of concealer should depend on your skin concerns, make-up artist Frey-ja Barker says: “Concealers for breakouts tend to be a thicker consistency and I would advise looking for more of a matte finish, as you do not want to draw attention to it.”

Benefit Boi-ing Airbrush concealer, £18.50

So, whether you’re a reality TV star or not, we’ve got the pro tips you need, from prepping your skin and choosing the right shade, to expert application.

Here are six concealer fails...

1

Not prepping your skin properly

“There are two elements that help concealer last longer throughout the day – primer and powder,” says Marc Reagan, Hourglass global director of education, artistry and events. “Our Veil Mineral Primer is our most popular product for a reason – it works on every skin type and skin tone and helps hold on to make-up, extending the wear all day. Apply a light

“As the skin under the eye is much thinner, opt for a cream concealer that is light in texture and highly pigmented, to hide dark circles whilst giving a smooth finish,” Laura Hogsden, senior trend team make-up artist at Benefit, says. “The Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick is super-helpful when it comes to versatile coverage and portability,” Reagan says. Hourglass vanish seamless finish foundation stick, £42, Cult Beauty Nars Radiant creamy concealer, £24

Concerned about spots and dark circles? “I think you cannot go too wrong with the famous Nars Creamy Radiant Concealer. Us make-up artists love it!” says Barker.

3

Using a shade that’s too light under the eyes

“One of the biggest mistakes I see is people applying a much, much lighter colour than their natural skin tone. This can run the risk of looking grey or cloudy, especially in photographs,” Barker says. “To avoid this, try a colour corrector in a peachy tone for dark circles, followed by a light-reflecting concealer such as Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Concealer.” Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away concealer, £24

4

Not using a brush

For precise application, a flat brush is best, Reagan says: “When applying concealer, try to use a concealer brush, like our No 8 brush, for the most even coverage, and focus only on where you need it.” “I like to apply concealer under the eyes with a ponytail eyeshadow brush, such as Laura Mercier’s,” says Barker. “It allows you to buff the concealer without looking heavy or cakey.”

n a t Fake

The non-toxic and cruelty-free brand has just launched a long-life tan with superior staying power. Liz Connor delivers her verdict.

wa s i t worth it?

Bare leg season is upon us, and if you’re a fair-haired person who’s as pale as me, that just-stepped-off-a-plane glow isn’t something that comes naturally to you. Now older and wiser about the damaging affects of the sun’s UV rays, I’ve swapped tanning sessions for daily SPF, so I usually seek my summer colour from a bottle instead. The latest is Vita Liberata’s Phenomenal tan (£37.50, vitaliberata.co.uk), a mousse that claims to last for up to two to three weeks after the first application. So does it work? Here’s my verdict...

The application

5

Using too much concealer

When faced with purplish-black patches under your eyes, it can be tempting to slather on lots of product, but that’s not a good idea. Barker says that, used sparingly, concealer can provide all the coverage you need, especially in summer when you don’t want to wear a lot of foundation. “Concentrate swiping in a cross formation through the face – a little in the centre of the forehead, down the nose, the apples of the cheek and chin, then blend,” she says. “A great concealer that is longwearing in the summer months would be Tom Ford Emotionproof.”

6

The first thing to know about this tan is that it’s really easy to apply, thanks to a smooth pump applicator that limits any messy spills. It comes in three shades: light, medium and dark. I opted for medium because although I’m fair, I prefer a darker tan. The mousse itself is a light and fluffy formulation that glides on to the skin with ease and dries in minutes. It’s also surprisingly odour-free. I apply the tan all over my body and am pleased that even during the development stage, the mousse is a really natural colour and doesn’t feel at all sticky. A big bonus tick for me is that Vita Liberata’s tans are non-toxic, so this one

Not setting your concealer

“Once the concealer is blended, it needs a powder to lock it in place,” Reagan says. “Gently stipple or press Hourglass Veil Setting Powder on top of the concealer, which will ensure the concealer stays in place and remains bright and radiant over the course of the entire day.” Liz Connor’s legs one week after applying the Vita Liberata Phenomenal Tan

isn’t formulated with skin nasties that some other brands pack into their formulas, like parabens, sulphates, silicones, alcohol or perfume. It’s also vegan, cruelty-free and contains lots of skinfriendly natural ingredients like aloe vera to hydrate, moisturise and condition skin during development.

The RESULTS The result was a deeper, darker tan with longer staying power. A big plus is that there was minimal transfer on to my bedsheets too. After one week, I was pleased to find that the tan had faded minimally and people were still asking if I’d recently been on holiday. I was impressed that it didn’t flake or rub off in the usual areas – although it had faded significantly on my face. After the full three weeks, my tan had pretty much completely disappeared, but in that time I’d subjected it to several pool swims and a 25K kayaking, cycling and running fitness challenge in the torrential rain, so I’m pretty impressed at the results. At £37.50 per bottle, this isn’t a cheap product but, as a regular fake tan wearer, I noticed a superior quality to both the colour and the longevity. It also fades like a natural tan, so you won’t get any unsightly patches where the tan has rubbed off prematurely. I think I may have just found my new summer staple. SWANSEA LIFE 33

I also find that the colour can look a little bit orange sometimes. I am delighted with what the team have done. It has been cut into a far more trendy shape, and the colour is much cooler. I’m so pleased with the cut, it feels really chic ‘60s. It’s also really versatile, I love the way that it has been styled for an evening event

Lara Johnson Lifestyle says... We loved Charlottes hair short. It suits both Charlotte’s face shape and lifestyle so it is a look that we wanted to develop, not necessarily completely change. We started by cleansing the old colour from the hair, to give it an even tone. We then worked with some clean and bright blondes to take the warmth from the hair. The cut was taken shorter through the back with more texture through the top. It has given Charlotte a more directional shape that is easy to wear. This reduction in the weight made it easier to dress for Charlotte’s evening do. We set the hair and brushed it out, complementing the look with a bow hair accessory. B e f o re ...

A shot of caffeine could boost more than just your energy levels, says Katie Wright

Brighter ÍÍUpCircle organic face serum with coffee oil, £14.99 ÐÐHello Jo bright eyes jelly masks, £20 for 30 pairs

As any coffee addict will tell you, there’s nothing like that first steaming cup of joe in the morning to shake you out of your zombie-like state. But did you know it can work wonders for your skin, too? Unfortunately, we can’t say that sipping on an iced latte is going to help your complexion – in fact, it might have the opposite effect, because coffee makes you dehydrated and could affect your sleep, both of which are detrimental when it comes to skin – but adding caffeinecontaining products to your beauty regime can have a very positive effect. And now there are a wealth of freshly brewed products and brands putting the focus on go-juice.

Smoother ÎÎPHB ethical beauty coffee bean scrub and mask, £16 ÐÐThe Base Body Co coffee + peppermint coffee scrub, £15.99

A benefit of coffee is that it is packed with antioxidants, a key skincare ingredient. These naturally occurring vitamins and minerals protect against the nasty free radicals (found in things like pollution and cigarette smoke) that damage your skin, so adding a shot of coffee through a serum could help to brighten your complexion.

“The coffee oil is rich in linoleic acid, promoting collagen and elastin production to keep skin supple.” There’s some evidence to suggest that caffeine itself is an antioxidant and that it can have a de-puffing effect, which is why it’s said to be particularly effective in undereye patches or sheet masks. Combining the antioxidant benefits of caffeine with the exfoliating effects of ground beans, a coffee scrub will gently slough away dead skin cells. Use two or three times a week to reveal brighter, smoother skin.

AND thicker hair “Most of the patients that I see in my hair health clinics are looking for more volume in their hair,” says leading trichologist Eva Proudman who is working with Dr Organic. “The best way to achieve this is to ensure you try and maintain a healthy scalp, which is the growing medium for the hair.” That’s where coffee comes in - caffeine can improve blood flow and stimulation to the scalp, necessary to promote healthy hair growth. “Caffeine provides powerful stimulation to the scalp’s microcirculation and also encourages keratinocytes to increase leading to the production of keratin, the main protein found in the hair,” Proudman explains.

Nobody wants to sniffle their way through dinner dates and work meetings. Liz Connor finds key hay fever triggers – and their solutions

HOW TO OUT-SMART HAY FEVER THIS SUMMER If summertime means continual itching, watery eyes and sneezing into the crook of your elbow, you’re probably one of the 13 million unlucky people in the UK affected by hay fever. When the pollen count is high, it can make getting outdoors a misery. Although we often associate hay fever with plants, it’s not just a lunchtime walk in the park that can cause an unpleasant reaction. We asked LloydsPharmacy pharmacist Pareena Patel to explain the top four triggers we need to be on the lookout for...

1. Pollen There’s a reason your nose starts tingling when the weather gets warmer: grass, weed and tree pollen is released when the climate starts to heat up, as part of the plant reproductive cycle. The airborne powdery substance contains proteins that are harmless for most people, but can prompt allergic reactions when breathed in by some.

2. Pollution

3. Dust mites

“Air pollution is becoming increasingly prevalent in the UK, which can be another big trigger for hay fever,” says Patel.

If the itchy eyes and dry throat tend to stick around past sneeze season, it might not be hay fever it all – it could be a reaction to the microscopic creepy-crawlies living in your bed.

“Dust, soot, diesel and traffic fumes can all quickly irritate your airways and trigger hay fever,” warns Patel. “If pollution is a trigger for you, you’ll need to make sure you check pollution levels before your leave the house.” You can check the damage in your local area on the Met Office website and it’s also a good idea to try to avoid places such as busy junctions, bus stops and car parks on highpollution days!

During the hay fever months your symptoms can be worse if you live with asthma too. Medical experts advise that the first line of treatment for hay fever is an oral antihistamine – most are readily available from a pharmacy without prescription, but it’s a good idea to check with the pharmacist whether they’re suitable for you.

37 SWANSEA LIFE

House dust mites are creatures so small they cannot be seen with the naked eye. They live in every household and are most commonly found in pillows, mattresses, carpets and soft furnishings, but they can even be found on clothing too. “The usual signs of a dust mite allergy include those common to hay fever, such as sneezing and a runny nose,” says Patel. “Many people with dust mite allergy also experience signs of asthma, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing.”

“Pollen usually is the biggest trigger for those who experience hay fever symptoms,” says Patel, “and if you have an allergic reaction to it, it causes your immune system to overreact and produce a compound called histamine.” It’s the histamine that irritates and inflames the nose, eyes and throat, causing symptoms similar to those of the common cold. Patel says grass pollen, which is common from around May to June, is the most common plant-based allergen, but tree pollen is another that can cause you grief too. While it affects less people, it does have a longer season – from February to June.

“Dust mites can be bothersome all year round to people who suffer with hay fever, aggravating symptoms because they cause an additional allergic reaction,” says Patel.

If you find yourself bearing the brunt of the symptoms at home, it’s a good idea to regularly wash bedding in very hot water (over 500C) and wear a mask when attempting a spring clean.

4. Mould As well as avoidance tactics, keeping a couple of key products in your bag could help. “Drug-free therapy such as the LloydsPharmacy allergy reliever (£19.99) can help alleviate symptoms naturally,” suggests Patel. “There are also a range of eye-drops available that contain the active ingredient sodium cromoglicate, such as Opticrom hayfever eye-drops (£5.75, superdrug.com) and LloydsPharmacy allergy and hayfever eye-drops (£4.79) that you might want to try. “As always, though, you should speak to your pharmacist about finding a hay fever solution which works for you.”

“Moulds are a type of fungus which can cause an allergic reaction either on their own or aggravate allergies such as hay fever,” says Patel. “Your immune system reacts abnormally when you breathe in the tiny seeds (called spores) that are released in the air and the symptoms usually cause a reaction to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs.” “While there are thousands of different moulds, only a few dozen cause allergic reactions in sensitive people,” she adds. Wet weather combined with heat favours mould growth, and sunny, windy weather can encourage spore release – so try to prevent mould and mildew build-up inside the home and invest in an air purifier, which can help trap mould spores from your living space.

beating the Big C... The charity Casting for Recovery provides retreats at no cost to participants, allowing women whose lives have been affected by breast cancer to gather in a beautiful, natural setting and learn to fly-fish in weekends of fun and support. Peter Slee reports...

38 SWANSEA LIFE

It wasn’t something she had done for many, many years. Yet here was 69-year-old Norma giving it a go.

Two exhilarating hours flew by in what seemed like five minutes, with the pensioner keenly spotting bugs flitting above the river’s surface and the branches of the trees bobbing in the wind. Even before she caught a fish, she decided her first time fly-fishing would not be her last. Recovering from breast cancer had been a scary and lonely time. But a chance conversation in hospital has provided Carmarthenshire’s Norma with a gang of supportive friends and the new pastime of fly-fishing, all thanks to the Casting for Recovery charity.

Norma and husband Peris are globetrotters, spending their retirement years on cruises to places as far-flung as south America, the Baltic and down the Amazon. But three years ago, her travelling was curtailed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “I was diagnosed in June 2016 and soon after had a lumpectomy and 17 of my lymph nodes removed,” she says.

“I started chemo in October that year and radiotherapy in February 2017 and two years on am cancer-free.

fly-fishing and never thought about it as an activity I might get involved in,” she adds. “But now I’d really like to keep it up. I have a friend who used to fish for Wales and so I’m working on him to take me out with him soon!” Casting for Recovery started in the US and is founded on the basic principles that getting out in the fresh air and doing an outside activity is good for the mind and body. “The gentle action of fly-casting is also particularly suited to the rehabilitation of ladies after breast cancer treatment,” says Casting for Recovery UK and Ireland co-founder Sue Shaw. “It also really helps women to come together in a safe space where they can be frank about their experiences with others who have gone through exactly the same issues.“ “It can be hard to talk about things with other people who haven’t had breast cancer,” says Norma. “They wouldn’t understand things like chemo brain! We have created a WhatsApp group and every few days we are in touch with each other. It’s great to keep in contact with them all – it’s our little community.”

But I’ve got my life to love and that is just what I am doing!

“We live in Drefach Felindre and there are not many groups for people with breast cancer in this area – it’s rather rural – so I have not had many chances to talk to other women in the same boat and discuss the things that crop up along the way. But I did fall into conversation with two ladies at the Prince Philip Hospital when we were all having our lumpectomies and they told me about a weekend retreat they had been on in Llanelli called Casting for Recovery.” The group is a programme run by the Countryside Alliance Foundation that takes women who have or have had breast cancer on a weekend of flyfishing and wellbeing therapy at various locations around the UK. One retreat takes place at the Garnffrwd Fishery in Carmarthenshire in early summer and Norma knew she wanted to give it a go. This year’s event was the charity’s 50th retreat, so Norma – who loves to bake – brought along a special cake she had made. Over the weekend she took part in mindfulness and relaxation sessions, leaned to tie flies and, of course, tried her hand at fishing the lakes at Garnffrwd. “I went fishing with my father on the Teifi in Cardiganshire when I was child, but I’d never tried

Before the participants start to fish, they have been taught about the basics of the equipment. They learn the right knots for tying on the artificial flies and even a little about entomology. They also learn the delicate art of flycasting.

T

he Garnffrwd Fishery was cold and clear that Sunday, clear enough for Norma WinstonJones to just about see the fish she was trying to catch.

Mum-of-three Eleri Evans, who participated in another of the events, says she had been “a bit apprehensive” about what she was getting into after undergoing a lumpectomy at the age of 42. But a friend going through a similar experience persuaded her to give it a go too.

Her doubts quickly left her once she had a rod in her hands. She says the experience was indescribable. “You just have to get out there to do it,” she adds. “It wasn’t something I had ever considered before. But this was ‘me’ time and I really appreciated that.” Also unexpected were the quick friendships she made with the other participants, most strangers before the weekend. The experience of fishing was relaxing and mesmerising enough to be a pleasant distraction to them, but it also brought them together. . “They get it,” she adds. “If you say, ’Such and such hurts’, they understand and it was good to share.” “What I also liked was that they take all comers no matter what your ability is, and I was a novice! “I have had surgery for cancer, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. “But I’ve got my life to love and that is just what I am doing!”

DR. CHARLOTTE

Easing the pain of arthritis away A common problem we see in surgery is people worried about their bones and whether their symptoms could be osteoarthritis or crumbling bones – particularly if they are aware that other members of their family have had diagnoses of one or both of these conditions. OSTEOARTHRITIS... WHAT IS IT? This is the most common type of arthritis and a condition caused by breakdown of the architecture of the joint, ie the bones, and cartilage (which are the shock absorbers for joints). When the body tries to repair the damage, it makes new bone which can also contribute to the symptoms. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Commonly people have: ■ pain and stiffness to the joint (particularly in the morning) ■ swelling and/or changes to the shape of the joint affecting the movements of the joint ■ “funny noises” within the joints

Aching bones? Individualised solutions for tackling the suffering might help ease the pain of osteoarthritis, says Sketty GP and Swansea Life doctor Charlotte Jones

■ sense of weakness within the affected joint and less strong muscles supporting the joint The symptoms vary in severity and are not always constant but they do tend to get worse and more persistent as the damage progresses. Most common joints affected are knees, hips, lower back, fingers, thumbs and neck. WHO GETS IT? Not everybody but it is more common as we get older and can be more common if family members have it. In addition, having a history of previous joint injuries or being overweight can put you more at risk of developing osteoarthritis. IS IT THE SAME AS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS? No, rheumatoid arthritis and some other conditions cause an inflammatory type arthritis that is very different to osteoarthritis – these arthritis conditions can occur at any age and are due to our own immune system attacking the joints.

38 SWANSEA LIFE

These types of arthritis can cause joint destruction so it is important to diagnose and treat them early. Rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect more small joints than osteoarthritis and pain is typically worse in morning and at end of day and can be linked to other symptoms like fatigue, dry eyes, skin problems, lung problems and low mood. There are many different types of treatments available. DO I NEED TO DIAGNOSE OSTEOARTHRITIS? Not normally as the diagnosis is often obvious from the history. However, if you have atypical symptoms then your GP may want to do some blood tests, and if your symptoms are causing problems with significant pain or interfering with activities of daily living we may suggest an X-ray. How can I prevent it? In short, there is no treatment that will stop you developing it but there are things that can help you reduce your risk: ■ Keep (or try to get your weight) down to the normal range so that you are putting less pressure on joints and eat a healthy diet. ■ Keep active and supple so that the muscles supporting your joints are strong, eg Pilates and yoga are great for strengthening core muscles and, if you have had previous injuries or are having symptoms, physiotherapists are fantastic experts at guiding exercise that will support your joints. We are lucky in Singleton to have a direct access physiotherapy service between 8.30-10am Monday to Friday. Aerobic exercise, even simply walking, can help keep your muscles strong. ■ Some people find taking some multi-vitamins with vitamin D and B helpful. Other people find glucosamine and chondroitin help their joints. These are readily available in chemists, health food shops or supermarkets but if you are on regular medication, check with your local pharmacist that it is fine to take them. “My advice to any bride to be would be to not stress. The day rushes by far too quickly” GP receptionist Melanie Parmenter, 30, married postman Robert Parmenter, 38, at Llanelli’s Stradey Park Hotel. She shares favourite memories of her big day with Swansea Life’s Peter Slee Where did you get married, and was it difficult to find a venue? We got married at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli. It really was the perfect venue for us. It is local to where we live and we just loved the open space and the sophistication of the hotel itself. We then had photos taken at Stradey Castle which was the most amazing, magical venue. Our photos look truly amazing against the castle backdrop. How would you describe your wedding theme? Our wedding theme was quite simple and elegant with a hint of vintage.

Tell us about your wedding dress My wedding dress was from Cariad Bridal in Swansea. I fell in love with the dress straight away. It was very simple and elegant to match the theme of the wedding. I loved the low back on the dress, followed by buttons all the way down the long train, finished with a very dainty diamond belt to finish it off. What suits did the groom choose? The groomsmen had their suits from Dyfed Menswear in Gorslas. They were navy with a grey waistcoat for the groom and navy waistcoats for the ushers/best man matched with tan-coloured shoes for a smart finish. They all looked very handsome indeed!

Did you have bridesmaids? I had four bridesmaids, Rebecca my cousin and Lauren, Jacqui and Clare – my closest friends. Tell us about your beauty prep on the day Beauty prep on the big day started around 7.30am. We had the very talented Wedding and Occasion Hair for our hairdresser, and Kelsey Tiffin Mua for our make-up. The morning was very calm and we had a lovely atmosphere. Tell us about your photographer and how important photography was for your big day Our photographer was Sarah at Lileth in Bloom Photography. A family member had previously got married and recommended her to us, and as soon as I saw her photos I just had to book her. She has an amazing skill at photography and captures the most perfect images. On the day itself, she made the whole wedding party feel very at ease. Everything felt very natural and she was

amazing with the children. So many guests praised her work and her as a person. We really couldn’t have asked for anyone better to capture our special day. What was your favourite moment? The whole day was perfect from start to finish but I would say my most favourite moment of the day was when we exchanged our vows. As nerve-racking as it was walking down the aisle, just knowing we had a room full of family and friends witnessing us become husband and wife was truly lovely. Did you have a first dance? What was it like and was there any entertainment? We were both very nervous to do a first dance. But we put our nerves behind us and danced to James Arthur’s “Say you won’t let Go” and we actually really enjoyed it. I then had a father-and-daughter dance, both very special moments for me. We also had close-up magician Luke Gravettto entertain our guests, who was absolutely amazing. He left the venue leaving guests stunned and wowed.

Do you have any advice for brides-to-be? My advice to any bride-to-be would be to not stress. The day rushes by far too quickly. So make sure to spend some time with your new husband, soaking it all in, and definitely make sure you have comfortable shoes!

Walking in a winter wedding wonderland… Yes, we know it’s the height of summer, but getting your big day on point is all about the planning! So maybe it is time to start thinking about the possibility of a magical winter wedding. The luxurious colour palettes, gorgeous crisp blue skies, beautiful early sunsets, soft candlelight, the sparkle – and of course it’s the season for romance! It’s no surprise, then, that more couples are opting for luxurious winter nuptials, says Swansea wedding PR Shakira Obaid who, in her monthly column, offers up some tips on how to get it exactly right.

We may be in the midst of a record-breaking hot summer but before we know it winter will be upon us. In recent years winter (Christmas especially) has become as popular as summer. More and more happy couples are dreaming about the prospect of roaring log fires, frosty landscapes and twinkling lights. While it might be cold outside, there’s nothing more special than being wrapped up in the warmth of love... So here’s a few reasons why you should consider a winter wedding.

1.The fashion:

Imagine the dress, lace, long sleeves, billowing chiffon, there’s something magical about the ‘ice queen’ look. What’s more, nothing screams glamorous quite like a winter white fur stole draped around elegant shoulders.

Your bridesmaid’s options are fabulously chic too. You could go for dark rich hues or cool winter greys.

2. The décor:

Candles and lanterns create a beautiful ambient setting, you can adorn your aisle and get creative with the centrepieces. Think hurricane vases and pillar candles – so romantic! Complement with rustic wooden logs, acorns and winter berries or keep it classic with glass and mirror. Meanwhile you can really go to town on the flowers, from classic rich red bouquets to frosty foliage and white roses.

3.The picture opportunities: A Welsh winter landscape can be so beautiful, from the natural beauty of bare trees to the magic of frosty lakes and rolling lawns. Even the rain can provide a dramatic and moody backdrop. The famous Rhossili Bay on Gower offers an eerie yet breathtaking backdrop in the winter months. You might have to brave the cold but the photos will be worth it!

4.The honeymoon possibilities: hy. ■ Image: John Wellings Photograp

Winter opens up the possibilities of exotic faraway destinations. It’s the perfect holiday season for Asia and the Caribbean or if you fancy something less traditional, you won’t find a better time of year to hit the slopes!

COOKBOOK REVIEW:

365 STUDENT COOKBOOK BY JO MCAULEY Here’s our verdict on a cookery bible perfect for students preparing to go to university come September. The fear is that teens off to university for the first time will survive solely on cheap student union beer, takeouts, Super Noodles and frozen pizzas. And while the chances of this are really quite high (it’s a rite of passage), you can still tuck a cookbook into their kitchen supplies box (one plate, one spoon, one pan, one mug) and hope they stumble across it – and 365 Student Cookbook by Jo McAuley might just be that book. If all else fails, you can always send your budding adult off laden with dishes of lasagne, in bulk.

Home cooking

Gorseinon’s Sian Day

with

A deliciously vegetarian recipe for July

Spicy chickpea burgers

Who will love it? First off, parents and grandparents of budding freshers – you’ll feel as though you’ve armed your youngster with the skills to feed themselves until at least the Christmas break (or until their big food shop – that you paid for – runs out). Second, (give it a few weeks...) once the buzz of being out in the world, fairly drunk most of the time, has worn off, and having got through the stress and drama of making new friends, the young adult in receipt of the book might just open it. And then, bar the odd order of cheesy chips on a night out, might just start working their way through it. What is it trying to get us cooking? Quick meals that take 10, 20 or 30 minutes to whip together. It covers the likes of “12 ways with poultry”, “brain boosters”, “hangover helpers” and “cheap eats”, and has a fair amount of veggie ideas too, if not vegan. They’re largely designed to be healthy and nourishing, although there’s still a pudding section (the chocolate orange cheesecake looks particularly good). How easy is it to use? Very, as you’d hope, seeing as it’s designed for cooking newbies. The ingredients lists are nice and short, and the instructions to the point – there’s also a picture of every dish, so you know what you’re aiming for. The best recipe is... Cheese and onion potato waffles – these are such a good idea, we can’t believe we’ve never thought of them before. Perfect hangover cure, brunch option and late-night snack, all rolled into one. The dish we’re least likely to try is... Berry-full baskets – realistically, who among us – especially students – is going to know where to find brandy snap baskets in the supermarket? And if they do, why go to the bother, when you could just have a bowl of berries and cream on their own? Overall rating: 7/10. A few of the recipes feel quite dated (eg warm sardine, bean and potato salad; cranberry poached pears; bacon-wrapped pesto chicken) but for those who are new to basics like soups, stews and tray bakes, it’s ideal.

Ditch the meat and try veggie burger recipes at your next barbecue, or for a filling midweek meal. They’re packed with protein, fibre and flavour. These little or big patties - depending on your appetite - provide a filling nutritious alternative to your standard meat burgers. They are quick and easy to prepare and you will probably have most of the ingredients in your store cupboard. You can turn up the heat according to your tastebuds by using more or less of the spice and you can serve with various accompaniments. I love red slaw and fresh salad in a wholemeal bun. You can also make these vegan by substituting the egg with an alternative vegan binder such as flax seed and make them gluten-free by omitting the breadcrumbs and use oats instead. ingredients ■ 1 tin chickpeas drained and rinsed ■ 1 small red onion, chopped ■ 1 tin sweetcorn, drained ■ 2 garlic cloves, minced ■ 1 red pepper, chopped ■ 100g porridge oats or breadcrumbs ■ 1 tsp cumin ■ 1 tsp coriander ■ ½ tsp hot paprika ■ Sprinkle of chilli flakes to your taste ■ 1 egg ■ Zest and juice of half a lemon ■ Salt and pepper to taste ■ Oilve oil for frying

method 1. Place all of the ingredients into a food processor and pulse several times as you don’t want a mushy consistency just slightly coarse with a bit of texture. 2. Form into patties 3. Fry in oil for 3-4 minutes on either side on a medium heat until cooked through and golden brown. 4. Serve in a bun with some chilli sauce and salad.

! Bon appetit

DIVINE DINING In search of enduring, elegant expertise, PETER SLEE called in at La Parrilla in Mumbles and found a recipe for success

W

eekend visitors and that ageold question – where to go for good food and drinks in lux surroundings? “What about La Parrilla in Mumbles,” suggests a helpful Mrs S? “ We haven’t been for a while and they’d be sure to love it.”

Well, yes, great. The food is invariably good and as for those views from its outdoor terrace, well, to die for really! But heck, you can’t book for less than six and I simply don’t want to run the risk of turning up with pals and being shown the door because it is jam-packed busy. But then a revelation. My wife has heard from a neighbour the place has done away with its rather archaic “no booking” rule and now accepts them enthusiastically. We get on the phone and do the deed. So 2pm on a Sunday afternoon it is. Table confirmed. That’s what I call a result. It’s nice to do places that aren’t new sometimes. And La Parrilla kind of fits that category. Its Oyster Wharf outpost has been a popular choice in recent years sitting alongside its two eateries in Wind Street and SA1. But I hadn’t called at this Mumbles favourite – perhaps just a little tucked away opposite Joe’s Ice Cream Parlour – for a while. But walk in, take the lift up to its second floor and it’s a combination of contemporary class and chattery clatter and with stunning views from its terrace overlooking Swansea Bay.

The maître d’ nicely hollered at us in welcome, and we were swept indoors and installed at a table.

for me too of an oven-baked potato and garlic bread. Basic pleasures, but pleasures all the same.

The longish menu offers an approachable and merry dance of Meditteranean classics. There are the likes of salads and seafood cocktails, calamari, steaks, slow-cooked lamb shanks, chicken and monkfish with lots of variations on sauces. I saw the words “Breast of chicken, stuffed with mozzarella, £13.95”, which is liked being asked if you want some free money!

My son-in-law loved his deep-fried brie starter (£6.95) and also devoured most of his pork loin served with an avocado and mango salsa. We set up a pincer movement vectored on the remains of his French fries and found them fresh, crispy and greaseless.

I was smug with my choice. It came in a sea of tomato and basil sauce, charred from the grill, or maybe a flame, every mouthful of which was pure joy of charming, not overly rich, textured layers. Mrs S’s starter of mussels in a white wine sauce (£6.95) were cooked to perfection, bursting with flavour, spanking fresh and as evocative as any we’ve had on a harbour front. And this is how I like them too, not bastardised with cream, as some chefs are prone to do, like bribing a child to eat their veg by covering them in cheese. This was pure and simple: white wine, onions (not chopped too fine), garlic and then the mussels. Across the table, a vegan main for my daughter of grilled Mediterranean vegetables served with a tomato sauce (£11.95) proved impossible to resist. Sides

A consistent palette of fl avours, applied to a series of different ingredients, allowed for plenty of variety. To drink, an excellent Bodegas Muga Blanco (£24.95) which came with good, balanced oak flavours and a Marques de Caceras Excellens at a bit-of-a-bargain £18.95 which was nicely fresh and fruity on the palate. Service from our table waiter Tom was knowledgeable, stylish and friendly, with staff here generally occupying that tricky territory that lies between overfamiliarity and deference well. Three lots of Joe’s ice creams later (we shared) and we were off into the rest of the day. The restaurant was still full, with a happy crowd of couples, families, a group of young Germans seemingly working their way through the wine list and endless meat, as well as a few trendy bearded and bespectacled types.

The restaurant occupied, we felt, a perfect sweet spot between the familiar and the ceremonial: a cavalcade of flavour and colour, shot through with a little bit of theatre. It’s well worth a visit. And here’s a tip I can’t recommend enough – bag a table if you can on its expansive outdoor terrace area if the sun has got its hat on and you fancy taking in one of the best views there is of the bay we all love so much. I reckon there is nowhere else quite like it in Swansea. It will all but steal the show! You feel almost as if you should get to your feet and applaud both that view and the food on your table in equal measure. I just hope summer stays around long enough to appreciate it! THE VERDICT: You will eat well here, and happily. The food here comes in an obviously crowd-pleasing format. La Parrilla delivers excellence and high quality in its food and a cosy, yet cool, vibe. No big fuss, no massive formality. Just an array of flavours, techniques, seasonings and sauces coupled with good service that works really well these days!

FOOD & DRINK

What do you do in the time you’ve saved in the kitchen?

What are your tips for saving time in the kitchen and/or around the house?

I like to go on bike rides and I love walking. My next challenge is to do the Three Peaks. I love reading, going to the movies with the kids and losing myself in a bucket of popcorn.

To start off any curry or dish that requires cooked onions, buy frozen chopped onion or even use ready fried onions. Don’t throw away any leftover wilting herbs in the fridge. Zap them in the microwave for 10 seconds and they dry instantly. Crush in the palm of your hands and store for another day!

What tips can you give families who have a fussy eater among them? One of my three kids used to be very fussy. It was frustrating and often I did all the wrong things like resorting to watching him, threatening punishment or telling him he had to finish his meal. I soon realised that that was not working and it was encouraging an unhealthy relationship with food.

Next time you squeeze the juice of half a lemon into anything, keep the flesh. Fill it with baking soda or bicarbonate of soda and pop into the back of the fridge in a bowl to keep your fridge smelling clean. Those are great. Your new show is all about saving time spent in the kitchen but also eating well. Can homemade food really be as easy as takeaways? Takeaway is convenient and I’m not saying that we shouldn’t treat ourselves to a takeaway occasionally. I love putting my feet up and not worrying about the cooking. If we plan ahead, I do believe that having meals prepped and ready in the freezer can be just as convenient as takeaway. It’s fresh, you know what you’ve put in it and all it needs is warming up!

Five minutes with...Nadiya In Nadiya Hussain’s latest project, Time To Eat, she reveals secrets for making delicious recipes that can be slotted in our busy lives. Ahead of the series launching on BBC Two, The Great British Bake Off winner tells us more

How can people who might have unsociable hours find time to prepare decent, quality meals?

Speaking of sitting there - let’s talk about tinned vegetables. Why should people think again about using them?

Even if you only have time to cook just two or three meals a week, I always like to think of one meal as two! During the time that you take to cook and eat one meal, you could have also made another to cook and stick in your freezer. Having prepared meals in the freezer can ease some of the worry of having to cook fresh every day. It can just sit there until you need it.

I think there is a stigma attached to tinned vegetables. They are seen in a negative light and we need to just accept that they can be a part of our cooking and day-to-day lives. Tinned vegetables take away preparation time, especially for root vegetables like potatoes and carrots. They are so convenient to have in the cupboard and are a great way to add bulk to dishes and help them go a little further.

58 SWANSEA LIFE

It has taken years and a lot of patience and lots of biting my tongue but I leave him to it now. The best way for me has been to lead by example. I think sitting together to eat has made it so easy for him to start to enjoy his food. Be relaxed, it’s not the end of the world! Lead by example, eat what they eat! Sit together. Be patient, it will happen, but in its own time. Now I can’t stop him eating! For this programme you went behind the scenes to find out where some foods come from. What stood out for you?

I can’t believe that baked beans are filled into the cans raw and then pressure cooked in the cans! That was mind-blowing. Everyone has a favourite comfort food, what is yours? Chips or lava fries! Chips, covered in chilli, melted cheese and with lots of lime coriander and sour cream! And Marmite crisps, mostly anything potato-based.

Time To Eat airs on BBC Two from Monday July 15

Waterstone Homes returns to Swansea with stunning new houses

F

ADVERTISING FEATURE

OLLOWING the success of Waterstone Homes’ first residential development in Swansea, we spoke with Clare Brown, the company’s Field Sales Manager, about the housebuilder’s brand-new luxury development coming to the beautiful suburb of Killay.

WHY HAVE YOU DECIDED TO BUILD YOUR NEXT DEVELOPMENT IN SWANSEA? Our new development comes off the back of our previous Swansea scheme, Howells’ Reach, in 2016. This original development proved to be one of our most popular schemes to date, selling out within just six months, which is testament to the strength of the property market in Swansea. Since then, we have always wanted to make a return to the area. Swansea is a prime sought-after location with everything you could possibly want and need. From fantastic shopping and dining, stunning countryside, great transport links and good schools, universities and employment opportunities, it’s got it all, which is why we chose to build here once again. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT? ‘Copper Beeches’

is made up of nine 4-bedroom private residential family homes, incorporating a mix of semi-detached and detached properties. There are five house types in total, all of which have spacious, modern open-plan living and private drives and garages. With just nine properties on site, the homes are large with ample outdoor space. They are not piled on top of each other – there’s room to breathe. The development is set in the sought-after suburb, Killay, on the cusp of the Gower and Swansea city itself. Thanks to its location on the city’s outskirts, with its tree-lined streets and surrounding woodland, Copper Beeches has a relaxed, village feel with easily accessible local amenities including numerous bars and restaurants. And with the M4 as well as the train station being only 15 minutes away, it also provides easy access to West Wales and London,

offering buyers the best of both worlds. We’ve also worked to make the development more affordable, with lower starting prices than our first city development. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE HOMES? We have taken care to ensure that the new homes fit in with and complement the local neighbourhood. Part of our strategy is to adopt design elements of other houses in the area into our own properties. With a mix of Victorian, pre-70s and self-build homes, there was a lot to consider and a specific period was difficult to define, so we chose to go for simplified style that would stand the test of time. Our aim is always to build homes with quality and longevity in mind, which is why we opt for timeless designs and high-end materials that will fit in their setting not just today, but in the future. HOW DO THE HOMES COMPARE TO OTHER NEW BUILD PROPERTIES IN THE AREA? There is a high level of quality and prestige associated with the Waterstone brand and

we pride ourselves on providing highspecification homes with superior finishes. The homes at Killay are designed for modern day living, offering open plan and cutting-edge kitchens compared to many new build competitors. They have also been designed with family life and functionality firmly in mind. Our homes also hold their value on the property market very well. House prices at our first Swansea scheme at Howells’ Reach have already risen by 5% so buying one of our new properties at Killay could be a real investment. WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THE WATERSTONE HOMES CLIENT SERVICE? We offer a very personalised service and are committed to helping buyers make their home perfect, with several customisable options available for every home. We also offer partexchange.

WHAT’S HAPPENING ON SITE NOW? Building work has now commenced on site and drainage systems are currently being installed, following the demolition of the original building. The homes are due to be completed and available late autumn and prices will range from £389,995 to £669,995. As the development is so exclusive, we will not have a sales office on site. We have just started offering private appointments and two of the homes have already been reserved off plan. Brochures are available on request and can be downloaded from the website. We are also working on a virtual reality experience for the development, which will enable customers to take a virtual walkthrough of the properties. With two properties reserved, we only have seven homes available.

HOUSE & HOME

Oh, we do love to be beside the seaside There’s really nothing quite like the seaside. The clear waters and shallow bays along parts of the Swansea and Gower coastline offer both hidden and much-loved spots as well as some very special properties with spectacular sea views. PETER SLEE has been to visit one of them...

F

or many, living by the sea is in their DNA. Some crave it, some can’t live without it and many are making the transition from city to waterfront idyll.

For a number of purchasers it’s the ultimate lifestyle choice. In most cases the view is more important to buyers than the property itself. After all, you can perhaps alter the property, but you can’t change the outlook. If you’re searching for a different, calmer pace of life, swapping polluted streets and daily commutes for saline air and walks on

64 SWANSEA LIFE

the beach or investing in a holiday home, then maybe this beauty might just inspire you to set sail towards your dream sea-view home. Seawinds in Bryn Terrace , Mumbles, will have you jumping out of bed to open the curtains each morning. Yes, really! Its impressive panoramas across both Mumbles and Swansea Bay will leave you completely mesmerised, say agents Dawsons. The three-storey detached property is at the end of a long driveway. Walk in through its front door and into a characterful and generous hallway. The lounge has a traditional feel to it, with a substantial bay window really showcasing those fabulous sea views yet again.

Dawsons’ Tom Hope says: “ There are lovely wooden floors and a wood burning fireplace for those nights which demand a cosier atmosphere. A balcony sits off the lounge, with plenty of room to sit/entertain and is encased with a glass balustrade which means you can enjoy those views uninterrupted. “You can also utilise the dining area which lies openly with the lounge and leads into the kitchen, a modern country design with its Shaker units, granite worktops, double Rangemaster, room for an American-style fridge freezer, wine cooler and breakfast bar.“ Seawinds’ lower ground floor includes a generous double bedroom with a window to the front framing the sea views. Next along

is the study, a wine store and modern shower room. You have complete private access to this floor via a lovely sun terrace at the front of the house. Tom Hope adds: “This arrangement has great flexibility within the home and would be ideal for the extended/multi-generation family. You can utilise the lower ground floor as a private floor or simply cherished space away from the rest of the house, providing the perfect guest accommodation or workspace.” On the first floor is a master bedroom, again with those views, along with two other double bedrooms and a modern family bathroom. It all stands in glorious, lush grounds complete with swimming pool and

patio spot close to the Mumbles seafront, yet still offering up the peace, quiet and privacy of a country property. But it is those views, offering an everchanging landscape even in the middle of winter, that are surely one of its biggest draws. Capturing it all from its gardens or windows - and with it the wildlife, the waters of Swansea Bay and the countryside Seawinds sits in - is what makes it such a winner It is surprising how powerful a view can be in the mind of a buyer. One recent survey showed 52% of buyers put a good view at the top their “most wanted” list. Number of bedrooms came second, with 44% putting it top of the list, and privacy third, at 42%.

THE DETAILS: Asking price: £995,000 Agents: Dawsons 77 Newton Road, Mumbles T: 01792 367301 E: mu@dawsonsproperty.co.uk

“A view can be a deal-breaker for many, but a glamorous one can help clinch a sale,” says interiors design consultant Sue Kirk. “People want to wake up, open their curtains and say ‘ wow’... The value of that really cannot be underestimated!”

Uniting Utilities

LESLEY TAYLOR ON HOW TO MARRY FUNCTION AND STYLE WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGNING A UTILITY ROOM IF ever there was a room that exuded functionality, the utility room would surely be it.

2

But functionality doesn’t have to be boring, and if you’re considering adding a utility room to your home, or fancy giving your current one a makeover, there are plenty of ways to add some utilitarian chic. The first thing to consider is what you’ll be using your utility space for. Will it be a home recycling centre with additional food storage and its own laundry area?

1. Even the most functional of spaces can boast the wow factor thanks to a great floor tile

Or does space dictate it will have one very specific purpose?

2. If you opt to tile just some of the wall, pay close attention to the area close to the sink

Whatever you decide, make sure it has all the relevant fixtures, such as plumbing for a sink or washing machine, electrical points for white goods and shelving for storage.

3. An eye-catching tile, such as the Bologna collection from The Baked Tile Company, will add style to the most functional of spaces. 4. Anything goes in your utility room, so if you want a gold sink, have a gold sink!

3 4

Key from the off is to choose great quality wallcoverings and flooring. A utility room needs to stand up to everything you throw at it, from spilt washing detergent to the muddiest of wellies. Tiles are the ideal go-to. Laid correctly, they need only a minimal amount of maintenance to keep them looking tip top and unlike carpets are unlikely to stain. They are also more resilient than wood in case of a water leak. If you can afford to fully tile your walls, go for it. But if budget doesn’t allow, make sure you pay special attention to the area around your sink – should you

have one, that is. If you do apply paint to the rest of the walls, go for one that can handle high moisture and humidity levels. Once you have the absolute essentials sorted, it’s time to consider storage. By its very nature, a utility room is going to attract clutter. So plenty of storage is required. Just because it’s a utility room, it doesn’t mean you can’t opt for some aesthetically-pleasing storage solutions. Shaker-style cabinetry, with the obligatory Belfast sink, work well in period properties, while industrial-style units tick all the boxes in a modern pad. But the best thing about a utility room, in my opinion, is its versatility. It’s a space unlikely to attract guests so if you want to use upcycled school lockers or a years-old cupboard, go for it! EDIT Home & Design’s Lesley Taylor of Mumbles is the author of 10 interior design books and has appeared on a range of network TV shows, including This Morning, giving inspirational advice on home styling. HOUSE & HOME

Jazzing up July Hydrangea aspera

With Joseph Atkin, head gardener at Aberglasney Gardens in Carmarthenshire One of the great things about gardening, and the plants we grow, is that there are always new solutions to deal with age-old problems. One which many of us face at this time of the year is the ‘July lull’ - a period when the garden does not have quite as much interest as one would like whilst we wait for summer’s high bloom. At Aberglasney we have been working on this in various ways and have come up with some simple but effective solutions.

Lilium leichtlinii

Orlaya grandiflora This annual is also great for foiling the July gap. Orlaya grandiflora has wonderful lacy white flower heads, like a cow parsley, but much shorter. Unlike Cosmos, this is a hardy annual and may reappear the following year, which is no bad thing. The wavy heads move in the wind and combine wonderfully with grasses for a naturalistic feel. The foliage is very fine and the plant is quite narrow, which makes it a great filler between bulkier plants. It is also quite open in habit (allowing you to see through it) so can be planted in front of other plants. We find it’s best interplanted between herbaceous perennials, where it will start flowering in June and keep going well into September. This is one of our new favourites at Aberglasney and we seem to find a spot for every one we grow.

This wild lily reliably flowers in July and is particularly good in shade or woodland gardens, which are always prone to a ‘July lull’. This species has wonderfully tall arching stems that are topped with strong yellow flowers with arching petals. There can be a good 10 to 15 of these flowers per stem, creating quite a display. Although wild lilies generally have smaller flowers than the hybrids, this means they don’t need staking and should come back every year. ■  ■  ■  ■  ■  ■

Height = 3m Spread = 50cm Position/Aspect = Any shady Soil = Any free draining, preferable acidic Pest and diseases = Lily beetle can be a problem Style = Woodland, Asiatic, cottage garden, mixed border, herbaceous border

Cosmos ‘Daydream’ Cosmos are a great annual for a Welsh garden as they seem to thrive in areas of high rainfall. ‘Daydream’ is a good strong variety that never fails us. The flowers are a vibrant pink and yellow, and at first glance hard to colour-scheme, but they work well with other annuals. To combat the ‘July lull’, simply plant out early. Each year our Cosmos go out earlier and earlier – this year they were planted on May 8th and are now in full flower. The other great thing about these Cosmos is that you only need a few plants to create an impact. ■  ■  ■  ■  ■  ■

The decor tide has come in and brought with it one of our favourite ever looks – seaside style. Evoking a serene landscape of sandy beaches and blue water in your home will transport you to a shoreside idyll in no time, no matter where you live. “Coastal style’s a hugely popular theme that comes in year after year with the predictability of the tide,” says Susan White, design director at Hillarys. “Small wonder, because living by the sea or hearing the splash of waves against rocks can instantly refresh body and soul,” she adds.

“You can go full-on with seagulls, anchors and statement motifs, or just bring an understated coastal feel to your home. You can simply surf the style, or plunge in with a full-on nautical approach. “Pick up on blues by all means but do incorporate natural materials, such as wood and stone. It’s all about reflecting the influence of nature and creating a setting that’s uncluttered, relaxing and somewhere you can escape stress,” says White. “For a finishing touch, add decorative objects into the mix, such as dried grasses, chunky throws, and a collection of pebbles or a basket of shells.”

Dive into deep blues Shades reflecting blue skies and seas are a winning combination, and are on trend this year. “Choosing the right colour palette is essential in nailing the modern coastal look,” says Becky Snowden, interior style advisor, Furniture Choice. “It’s all about recreating the zen and relaxation of being by the sea, but while light blue and white are the usual go-to colours, experiment with darker hues like indigo and navy for a 2019 update,” she suggests. TIP: Pick up on deck chair stripes – a traditional choice for a coastal setting.

Take in sea breezes “When creating a coastal inspired room, it’s crucial to keep the overall mood light and airy,” says Vanessa HurleyPerera, chief product officer, Sofa.com. “Natural finishes like linen and cotton are a great choice for a coastal look, as these textures have a lovely breezy feel about them. Keep things simple by opting for light toned fabrics, and create interest by layering an accent chair or some scatter cushions in a subtle stripe.” TIP: Accessorise with beachcomber style elements and you’ll almost be able to smell the sea. Talk to the sand For a cool, coastal vibe, pick up on mellow, golden sand shades for a shorelineinspired setting. “Colours inspired by sandy, sun-drenched beaches are the newest way to interpret shoreside style,” says Sue Kim, senior colour designer at Valspar. “As they’re on the warmer end of the colour spectrum, their mellow glow will work well even when the sun’s gone down and the light is colder.” TIP: Rich, deep gold shades will work well on a feature wall, whereas lighter sandy hues won’t overwhelm if used throughout on walls and ceilings.

HOUSE & HOME

Some say it’s had its peak, but open plan designs are still staggeringly popular. Luke Rix-Standing ponders the appeal of blurring room boundaries

here are exceptions to every rule, but we’d guess the phrase ‘open plan’ mostly conjures images of a modern, minimalist apartment in whitewashed monochrome, dotted with oddlyshaped furniture from the darkest corners of IKEA. Or, depending on your profession, a vast integrated office space filled with shoulder-high plastic partitioning.

T

OPEN PLAN

In reality, ‘open plan’ can be a slightly trickier concept to pin down. “In the simplest terms, it’s a connection between the living room, dining room and kitchen,” says Charles Bettes, managing director of London architecture firm gpad (gpadlondonltd.com), “linking together those three primary functions.” In pictures and catalogues, you’ll sometimes see open-plan bedrooms thrown into the mix, but Bettes says this is usually more aesthetic than practical. “They’re cool spaces and they look really great, but open-plan bedrooms are rare,” he observes. “They don’t provide even that basic level of privacy.” 104 SWANSEA LIFE

g n i liv The dominant design trend rendering walls redundant

At the extreme end of the open plan scale lies the studio apartment – an NYC staple with just one main room plus a (probably tiny) bathroom. Rarely a stylistic choice, it’s often not a brilliant ambassador for the possibilities of open plan design though.

Why would you choose open plan? Open plan is not for everyone – the lack of privacy might start to grate when the in-laws come to stay, your son takes up weightlifting, or your daughter starts playing the drums. But there’s a reason it’s cantered to the cutting edge of interior design. First and foremost, open plan arrangements almost always maximise natural light. One glass-panelled wall or set of glass doors can do the job of several rooms worth of windows if unhindered by walls or doors. Secondly, it encourages social living. An open plan home doesn’t split people into separate spaces, and you can often at least see your loved ones, even if you’re all doing different things. Thirdly, though open plan is often associated with cavernous apartment buildings and sprawling office floors, town and city-dwellers are increasingly using open plan designs to maximise efficiency in smaller spaces.

“In the city, space is at such a premium that the houses and flats we’re designing are getting smaller all the time, and tiny pockets of space can feel quite claustrophobic,” says Bettes. “By opening those spaces up, the whole thing feels larger.”

On one level it’s common sense - if your kitchen and dining table are in the same space, that’s two rooms taken care of in one. Finally – and you may think this doesn’t affect you but it probably does – open plan living is thoroughly in vogue. Open any magazine, glance at an appropriate billboard, and you’ll frequently see homes that are airy, fluid, high on light and low on masonry. “A lot of it comes down to fashion,” says Bettes, “and I think a lot of people desire open plan because it gets talked about a lot.” How do you make open plan work? Open plan design can look sleek, spacious and ultra-modern – or it can seem cluttered, invasive and incoherent. The key, says Bettes, is to strike the perfect balance between fluidity and separation. “There doesn’t have to be one big rectangular space,” he says. “You could have large doors that fold back, or sliding doors that you can have open during the day or when you have people round. You can use glazed partitions – providing a visual link to

other rooms – or curtains that you can pull across to create more intimate spaces.” You’re looking to create three distinct spaces which are separate without being disconnected – retaining a sense of fluid flexibility without messily merging them into one. Consider the potential of waist or shoulder-high partitions, or doorway-like arches that clearly demarcate your space. Link rooms together with design aspects like colour and material. “Different colours can look nicely contemporary, but can also look quite stark,” says Bettes. “You can’t have one red room, one blue room.” Sharing wall colour avoids any undesired clashes, while laying down universal flooring links rooms together with one foundational surface. For most people, open plan is a choice – new builds, redevelopments, moving homes etc – but be aware that it may not be so simple if you live in, for example, a Victorian town house. You can start knocking down the walls, but, even with the right planning permissions, it gets very pricey, very fast.

The new normal or a passing trend? Some architects have argued that open plan living might have already peaked, and that in the coming years more conventional floor plans will once again prevail. “Five years ago, everyone wanted to be open plan,” says Bettes, “but there’s just a feeling it might go back the other way. “A key driver is iPads and other devices – traditionally families gather around TV screens, but now people are finding smaller pockets of space to watch things individually.” Whether or not these predictions pan out, the open plan revolution has changed the new generation – at least in urban areas. A recent survey on home preferences by L&Q development The Gateway, found that only 14% of London’s millennials would consider a separate dining room a priority. We may yet head back to separate rooms, but who’s to say they’ll be the same ones?

features of nature

Evergreens such as Taxus baccata (yew) make for great statement plants

Invest in a fountain and weatherproof light fittings – as well as a statement plant or two – and perfect that outdoor room you always wanted, says David Domoney Your garden may be full of seasonal colour but, if you really want the wow factor, adding glorious garden features is a great way to draw the eye and entice people to journey down the garden, creating a truly special space

• Water features

• Living walls

Trickling water in a garden can transform any area into a tranquil haven. Water features come in a wide range of designs and materials.

Brighten bare walls and boost your vitamin uptake in one fell swoop by creating an edible living wall.

For a rustic look in a cottage garden, a drilled mill stone amid coloured rocks could add the babble to your brook. Contemporary style outside a minimalist city flat can simply mean a sheet of water cascading over shining stainless steel. If you’ve been turned off in the past by tricky installation, there are now solar-powered water features that can be installed in an instant. Just be sure to place the solar panel in a sunny spot.

108 SWANSEA LIFE

Grow lettuce, rocket and spinach in vertical planting arrangements to cut down on the use of floor space. They’re fast-growing and low-maintenance. Some fancy modular walling systems are equipped with their own irrigation pipes, or recycle lengths of guttering fastened to garden walls. Alternatively, choose ornamental plants like Heuchera, Sedum spectabile (ice plant) or Carex (sedge) to create artistic arrangements and break up bare sections with foliage. Different colours can be arranged in spirals, concentric circles or stripes to create a true

Lighting up new or existing features can really set them off and will keep your garden giving well beyond sunset. Lighting from below with professionally installed spotlights offers a focal point while casting solar-powered string lights around ornaments creates interesting patterns. Before committing to outdoor lighting, consider your local wildlife. If you know which nocturnal wildlife visits your patch, you can adapt your light to minimise disrupting them. Bats’ and birds’ feeding and sleeping patterns can be affected by security lights and some wild birds can begin singing before dawn due to the confusion. Opt for lighting in a warmer hue or position them lower to the ground to minimise lighting’s effect.

• Garden rooms All the rage at the moment, free-standing garden rooms are a fantastic way to create an immersive space for entertaining friends, working from home or relaxing with a book while the kids potter around the garden. Around £500 will buy you a seven-footsquare wooden summer house, with double doors and large windows to let in the sunlight. Some come with double glazing, integrated terraces and bi-fold doors, or can be plumbed in.

• Statement plants Another fine idea for sprucing up your garden is to add one or two statement plants in choice places. The delicate lacy leaves of Acer palmatum (Japanese maple) or vibrant fruits of a dwarf apple tree centre stage in a large pot on the patio will create visual impact. Alternatively, consider evergreens such as Taxus baccata (yew).

canvas of colour that is unique to your garden. Not only do they look fantastic, living walls also provide insulation to keep houses cooler in summer and warmer in winter, as well as offering protection from noise and pollution.

• Firepits and fittings

You can easily give your garden a more intimate, homely feel and make it a great space to unwind by adding features with sentimental value to you. Pick a stone animal, decorative mirror, or etch into a stone tablet to personalise the space to your taste. Invest in a few of these charming garden features and make your garden a truly inspiring place to be.

Get the most out of summer evenings by installing an on-trend fire pit on your patio. Available in a range of shapes, sizes and price points, the cheapest fire pits start at around £30 and you can get foldable ones to stow in the shed between uses. There are decorative globes that give off dancing shadows or bowl-shaped ones equipped with cooking grates for rustling up flame-grilled steaks while you listen to the flames crackle. It’s atmospheric and a great way to get warmth and light into your garden at the same time.

The Volkswagen T-Roc: Designed to turn heads Is this late entrant into the SUV game as good as it looks?

V

olkswagen was quick to enter the MPV market yet took its time when it came to the modern SUV sector, but it’s been worth the wait for the medium-sized T-Roc.

There’s a very wide range of T-Roc models from which to choose with petrol or diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions and a number of trim levels, all carefully packaged to tempt you to move on up. Our mid-range Design 1.6 TDI with the selective catalytic reduction technology in the exhaust meant it was low polluting and much cleaner than many petrol models, but it brought the advantage of very good economy as well. In fact, we frequently bettered the manufacturer’s own combined figure for the economy on a few journeys and even saw it heading towards 63mpg at times on motorways. It has a respectable time from rest but it’s not a rapid Crossover SUV, and it does like to settle down to the UK maximum while its overtaking abilities are dictated by the bestchosen gear ratio as you can find yourself hunting for the right cog when the revs spin away mid-range. The 1.6 TDI power band was comparatively narrow and meant ou have to carefully encourage it along and be prepared to change up or down to optimise the performance potential. 112 SWANSEA LIFE

That’s not a hardship, thankfully, with a wellweighted and progressive clutch, narrow and precise gear change and a deftness of delivery. The brakes are well up to their task with a full load and it held on our usual test slope without any issue. For the lightness of the steering in town you have to pay with a bit of vagueness at speed, a lack of feedback. The turning circle was good and it did not suffer any kickbacks or tugging under acceleration. Secondary controls on wheel spokes, fascia, console and touchscreen needed familiarisation but worked well and the infotainment and essential displays were large and clear. I liked the multi-panel in front of the driver and the ability to select what you wanted to prioritise. You can also choose from four driving modes, ranging from economy to individual dynamic settings, and this helps transform the T-Roc from SUV to sporting carry-all. They do make a perceived difference when selected. Oddments room was good, not exceptional, with deep console trays and a compartment, slender door bins and a usefully sized glovebox, rear seatback pockets and door bins, while the rear loadbed revealed from knee-height covered a space-saver spare wheel compartment. Road holding is good for what is a family SUV once you adjust to that vague steering. It grips well, has no vices and you feel safe inside.

Noise levels were all low, the engine was not particularly loud at any time even when accelerating, there’s not much other mechanical noise, while wind and roadgenerated sound were also muted. The T-Roc is unmistakably a Volkswagen from any angle, particularly the front, and sharp as its exterior is, the interior plastics and texture are drab. Even VW seem to acknowledge this, with slim body-coloured panels across the fascia as some relief. Visual details aside, the VW T-Roc is an attractive model overall with strong qualities, a hewn out of metal solidity and easy-driving nature, and diesel economy to enjoy.

SWANSEA BAY WALK Join Andrew as he leads us on a Swansea Bay walk

Start/finish location .......... Llanrhidian Village Distance ..................................... 2-3 miles (1½ hours) Level ............................................. Moderate Parking ........................................ On-street or pub car park ............................................................(ask landlady’s permission)

Last but one of the Summer evening walks Throughout the summer, Swansea Ramblers have been enjoying some gentle evening strolls which for many of us is a lovely way to unwind after work and get some fresh air away from the office. As the days get shorter, these walks have to come to an end, so if you want to give it a go then come along for the last two on Tuesday August 27 and Tuesday September 10 or check the programme next year for the new season. We will, of course, have regular short walks throughout the winter days, so do have a look for a walk you fancy. On August 27 at 7pm, we will walk in a lovely location on the North Gower Coast. Llanrhidian Village is tucked away off the main road but is worth visiting for its church, mysterious stone circles on the village green and the view across the estuary. If we get a sunny evening then that view will be even lovelier. From the centre of the village (near the pub and church), we’ll follow the Wales Coast Path signs west along the path below the high ground over which we will later return. The path passes a few houses then enters a wide green field at the edge of the saltmarsh. The route then enters a narrow path that runs parallel with the fields. (Don’t ascend any other paths yet.)

Upcoming walks

august 2019 Sat 03 Blackmill, St Cein’s Church (5 miles) Easy/Moderate meet 10.00am Guildhall (Francis St) Sun 04 Around Talybont Reservoir (13 miles) Strenuous meet 9.00am Guildhall (Francis St)

This route eventually rises on a stony broad lane but before you do, see if you can see Weobley Castle on the hillside in the distance. One of our longer walks would pass by there too. Ascending the lane, you leave the coast path (it goes off to the right) and continue uphill on this old historic lane to the hamlet of Leason. This group of houses is again hidden away from the main road. As you bear left on the bend in the lane, ignore the other lane on the right and keep straight on. Ignore the now tarmacadam road on the right and continue straight on past the houses. The path heads across three fields, eventually following the left-hand hedgerow. At the end of the last field, turn left down an old lane which can occasionally be a little wet. Follow the signs taking you away left from the house and continue through a farm where you may see a herd of alpacas. A narrow lane takes you on to the high ground above the church, emerging on the edge of the village. Turn left and follow the lane back to the church.

OUT & ABOUT

UNIVERSAL ORLANDO’S NEW HARRY POTTER RIDE IS A THRILLING FLIGHT OF MAGIC AND MISHAP Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is the latest attraction to open at the American theme park. Jemma Crew gives it a wizarding whirl

H

ours before Universal Orlando’s wizarding world usually opens, queues are already snaking their way through the resort as Potterheads gather to try a much-hyped new ride.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is arguably one of the theme park resort’s biggest draws, with four rides in two magical locations linked by a Hogwarts Express replica train. According to Warwick Davis, who played Professor Flitwick in the blockbuster films, even those who are not familiar with JK Rowling’s books will be enchanted by the latest offering, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. He was joined by Rupert Grint, who played Harry’s best friend Ron Weasley, Tom Felton, who acted the part of Harry’s nemesis Draco Malfoy, and other Potter stars, to celebrate the stateside launch. And with a 10hour wait time on the ride’s opening day, it’s clear how committed Potter fans still are to the cause.

 WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? The ride is Florida’s longest coaster, with almost a mile of track weaving amongst 1,200 trees and lichen-covered ruins inspired by castles and abbeys in Ireland, according to Alan Gilmore, the Irish art director who helped imagine the setting. Called a story-coaster, it follows a narrative. Students are taken on an interactive ‘care of magical creatures’ lesson set in the heart of the forbidden forest. Accompanying Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid, riders mount enchanted motorbikes, or recline in sidecars, and are whisked away with the voice of Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the movies. 118 SWANSEA LIFE

An almost overwhelming attention to detail, characteristic of Universal’s other Potter rides, starts in the designated queuing area. Graffitied walls, a clutch of dragon’s eggs ready to hatch, cobwebbed crates and cages suspended from the ceiling can all be found in the dimly lit, cave-like passageways. There is even a pre-ride show involving projections of Hagrid and Arthur Weasley, the father of Harry’s best friend who helps the game keeper charm the motorbikes in preparation for the adventure to come. As you near the front of the queue, shadows of giant spiders ominously scuttle across the woodpanelled ceiling, over which Hagrid’s motorbike and sidecar also zoom noisily.

 HOW DOES THE RIDE WORK? With seven launches and a top speed of 50mph, you never quite know what’s coming, whether you’re hurtling through the treetops of the Forbidden Forest or dodging blows from a menagerie of magical creatures under the gamekeeper’s care. The rapid yet smooth acceleration gives a convincing impression of flight, with none of the turbulence or jolting that accompanies the parks’ other highspeed roller coasters. But as readers will know, while the good-natured but clumsy Hagrid always means well, sometimes his intentions backfire, and there is plenty of mishap and magical blunder in this thrilling three-minute experience. For the biggest thrills, sit on the motorbike at the front - you’ll have the furthest to fall when you lose momentum during a climb and are propelled backwards, only to plunge 16ft as you detangle from a thicket of devil’s snare. Staff kitted out in protective gear - some of these creatures can be extremely dangerous, you know ask how your lesson has gone as you disembark.

In true keep-the-secret Potter style, riders are urged not to tell anyone which creatures they encountered, to keep the element of surprise.

 WHAT ARE THE OTHER POTTER ATTRACTIONS LIKE? Afterwards, stumble out on jelly legs into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Hogsmeade at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Less than a five minute walk away is Hogwarts itself, a splendid fortress made even more spectacular by a light and music show on selected nights. Join Harry and Ron as they ditch a history lesson for a Quidditch match, in a simulator-style ride that sends you tumbling through fireplaces and turns you into a broomstick master. Its multiple twists and turns are not for the weak-stomached and, as our guide aptly puts it, not all muggles are cut out for flying. A less queasy alternative is the Flight of the Hippogriff, a more traditional outdoor coaster, which is shorter and more familyfriendly. Meanwhile, a short journey away on the Hogwarts Express is Diagon Alley, London’s magical shopping street around the corner from King’s Cross station in the Universal Studios park. Here, wannabe wizards can take part in an enchanting wandsorting ceremony at Ollivanders wand shop, casting spells at marked and secret locations. A double scoop cone at Florean Fortescue’s ice-cream parlour is a must, best enjoyed as you wait for the carved dragon on top of Gringotts bank to belch fire. And it is hidden within the depths of Gringotts that the final Potter ride rests, another experience involving virtual 3D projections, which sees riders dodge the evil Lord Voldemort, as they make their escape from the bank.

 ONCE YOU’VE POTTERED OUT... The parks are an explosion of colour and fun, with a plethora of rides, entertainment and eateries. Old favourites like ET and Jurassic Park are complemented by the Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster, where passengers can choose a song to hurtle along to, while the simulator-based Simpsons ride stands out for comedy value. The newest offering is Big Fire, a restaurant channeling a backto-nature, family holiday vibe that will open during summer 2019. It will serve up American fare reminiscent of evenings spent around an open fire, with meat and vegetables cooked on a large grill, using different flavoured woodchips. Home comforts such as mac and cheese, cornbread and chilli, and chops and fried potatoes will be on offer, along with a campfire-inspired s’mores platter of chocolate, crackers and marshmallows, to be toasted over a small flame. And there’s some great news for those on a budget A new resort, opening on June 27, will allow families an affordable base from which to explore the parks. Universal Endless Summer Resort - Surfside Inn and Suites is Universal Orlando’s first value category hotel, with rates starting from $73/£64 per night for a seven-night stay. The bar overlooking the surfboard-shaped swimming pool will serve seven frozen drinks, including a mango and toasted coconut mojito, while the resort’s emphasis on affordability means no food item will be priced over $12/£10.50. It’s modelled around a surfer’s paradise, with a large blue wave roof rolling in over an entrance lined with surfboards and palm trees. Inside, cushions resembling pastel sea-washed pebbles are used as casual seating, while up above, bubble-like netting envelops the lights, and even the pale blue duvets are rippled to look like the surface of the ocean.

need to know: Seven nights in Orlando with Virgin Holidays, including Virgin Atlantic flights from London Gatwick, room-only accommodation at the Universal Endless Summer Resort - Surfside Inn and Suites, car hire and the 3 Park Explorer ticket, costs from £1,099pp (two sharing). SWANSEA LIFE 119

TIME FOR YOU

Does rule the waves?

In a nutshell: If you’ve never seen a cruise ship like Britannia before, let me tell you it’s enormous. The £473 million Britannia made her debut sailing in 2015 but still remains the largest of seven ships currently in service with P&O Cruises, capable of carrying 3,647 (mostly British) passengers. It is 1,082 ft long – equivalent to four-and-a-half nose-totail Airbus A380s and longer than both The Shard and Eiffel Tower. Style & character : Every tasteful inch of Britannia’s interiors is thanks to a design company that has also put its name to the Langham in London and the Four Seasons Gresham Palace in Budapest. Not, perhaps, quite as luxurious as some of the smaller, boutique-style ships at sea, she remains nonetheless more sophisticated than many of the large mass-market cruise ships. The décor is bold but tasteful, and will appeal to those who want great looks and big ship features such as lavish production shows and lots of places to eat and drink. Children’s and teen clubs make it a family favourite in school holidays. What are the cabins like: The most lustworthy cabins boast the latest in luxury including their own butler and separate living areas. These generous places are holiday heaven. But most will opt for a standard cabin with balcony. Inside staterooms have no windows but suit those on a budget. Our outside cabin was roomy and well-equipped with a desk, spacious wardrobe and ample charger points as well as White Company bathroom lux. 140 SWANSEA LIFE

What about the food? Board with an appetite... and some elasticated-waist trousers as you’ll probably need them by the end of your trip! You can fill your boots and eat well for free in the main restaurants and buffet. But I’d also hugely recommend splashing out at one or two of its fine dining venues where you’ll get food that really wows. Our favourite? Atul Kochhar’s Sindu, showcasing a menu which is a triumph of perfectly balanced spices and delicate flavours. Dishes such as pan-roasted beef tenderloin and spiced mash vie for your attention, alongside ginger and mint tiger prawns and the signature dish – a trio of fragrant curries. We loved it so much we went a couple of times during our sevennight break. It is £28pp very well spent. The Glass House was another favourite, a cosy nook overlooking the ship’s main atrium great for people-watching and where wine lovers can try new vintages and perhaps an early evening tapas-style plate under the eye of expert sommeliers. Service & facilities Work out with a view from the ship’s 16th-floor gym with views out over the sea. There’s a wellness focus on board, with dedicated instructors leading everything from yoga sessions to spin classes. There’s a choice of pools and an added cost solarium pool, a peaceful indoor area reserved for adults. A spa which offers massages, facials, acupuncture, saunas, hot stone loungers and a hair salon is also available. Staff were friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgable.

Entertainment & excursions The main theatre offers solid, if unspectacular nights out and takes in everything from one-man shows to extravagant costume productions with singers and dancers as well as late-night comedy. There’s music in the atrium at various times during the day. But the jewel in Britannia’s crown is the Limelight Club on deck 5, a combined entertainment and dining venue in the tradition of a supper club just off the main atrium. Its big draw is the chance to see entertainers and guest performers from stage and screen up close and personal. Acts vary from theatrical performances to live music, such as jazz, pop, blues and soul. A British-style bar broadcasts live football games (for those worried about missing the big matches back home). There are plenty of port adventures. Trips ashore can be pricey but take in all tastes and range from those for the active to more sedate sightseeing outings. We also opted for a two-hour £75 session with BBC Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebbutt – a new recruit to P&O’s bevy of Food Heroes, a stellar culinary line-up designed to put the va-va-voom into onboard dining – and who guided a group of 20 or so through an interactive masterclass in Britannia’s state-of-the-art Cookery Club, a bright cooking-cum-eating room full of pretty KitchenAid mixers and iPad-controlled demonstration screens. We loved every minute of it too!

Cruises are no longer the preserve of affluent pensioners. Far from it, in fact. Now there’s yoga, celebrity chefs, wildlife watching, fine dining and spin classes all aimed at pulling in a younger crowd. PETER SLEE gives P&O’s Britannia the once-over...

STILL NOT CONVINCED?

This myth-buster may help you make up your mind

 I’LL GET SEASICK The vagaries of the sea can never be underestimated: the Atlantic can be a millpond in October and the Aegean can turn gale-force in August. But while it’s true that bad weather can strike at any time, modern-day technologies and stabilisers flanking the hull make it very unlikely that you will lose more than a couple of days to seasickness on board a mid-size or resort ship. In our week-long trip on board the Britannia, the seas barely ever reached more than a slight ripple.

 I'LL BE SURROUNDED BY PENSIONERS The average age of cruisers is 55.6 years, but there’s no rule that says your hair has to be the same hue as the sea. Increasing value for money and cruises of shorter duration are luring younger holidaymakers, including generations of families and children. Today, cruising is more about surf pools and chilled-out pampering than travel rugs and deck quoits.

 I'LL BE STUCK WITH PEOPLE AT DINNER I DON'T WANT TO SPEAK TO... These perceptions deter many who would otherwise happily try a cruise. The truth, however, is that most of the larger lines offer more flexible and informal dining options than they used to, and open-seating policies in their main restaurants. If you’re worried, check before booking. As for dress, yes, most lines rule out shorts, flip-flops or T-shirts, but that’s true of many restaurants ashore. And it’s altogether more relaxed at any of their cafeteria-style eateries where anything goes really. VERDICT: It’s one of the fastestgrowing holiday sectors, popular with singles, families, over-50s… just about everyone in fact. But why? What will tempt you to run away to sea in 2019? Easy peasy! Head out of Swansea on a two and a half hour or so drive to Southampton with pretty much as much luggage as you want and step on board. Check into your cabin (or stateroom, as it is known) and unpack just once. Your floating hotel room will waft you gently to your destinations while you lap up life on board. Fares cover main dining room meals and entertainment so it gets a 10/10 from me for value for money. Find a deal with some on-board spending included (usually £50pp) and it’s even better value. And any worries about being “trapped” proved completely unfounded. It sounds a

bit strange given the ship’s size and the thousands on board, but we honestly didn’t feel like we saw that many people during our northern Med week-long trip. If you want to fill your boots at the buffet, as many do, you can. We preferred to graze on an early-evening tapas-style plate washed down with a glass of Velvet Devil merlot in the Atrium’s Glass House or one of the fine dining restaurants. But the choice is yours and in reality, you needn’t actually spend too many pennies more once you are on board if you’d rather not. And if Britannia is the embodiment of modern British culture it also highlights the proverbial glass-halfempty/glass-half-full approach its populace has. If you want to moan about queues at the lifts (when there are also stairs available) or the absence of his and hers reading lights in the otherwise well-lit cabins, you can do that too should the fancy take you. Not that I think many will!

 I WON'T SPEND ENOUGH TIME IN PORT It’s worth noting that mid-sized and resort-sized ships can’t dock in smaller ports and have to decant thousands of passengers, but whatever the ship, the fear of being holed up on board is unfounded: it’s not uncommon to be ashore every day. If destination is the key driver for your holiday, you must pick a ship that spends adequate time in your chosen ports. Some ports of call are little more than a cursory stop; at others the ship might stay three hours, or the best part of a day.

 I'LL GET LOST Few hotels west of Beijing are as large as the largest liners; the world’s biggest ship rises to 17 decks. If you’re the sort who loses the car in the supermarket car park, accept that you’ll spend a chunk of your day mimicking a Pac-Man in the ship’s corridors, or simply choose a small or mid-size vessel. There are few landmarks once you hit the corridors of a large liner (though paying attention to the art work can help) and multiple staircases, lifts and physical features that prevent you from physically crossing from one bit of the ship to the other can at times prove unfathomable. But there are maps on every deck and cabin stewards wandering around. So no need to worry.

Need to know....

 I'LL GET BORED

P&O Cruises is offering a seven-night cruise on Britannia (B010) from £479 per person for an inside cabin. Departing April 19, 2020, the price includes kids’ clubs, full-board meals and entertainment on board. Departing from and returning to Southampton, ports of call are Rotterdam (overnight), Bruges and Cherbourg.

Very unlikely. The cookery school we joined in on Britannia was just one of the string of things we could have been involved with. The buzzword in cruising is “enrichment”, with cerebral diversions at every turn. There are opportunities to learn fencing, improve your photography skills, learn Spanish or the piano, immerse yourself in yoga or join the cast of The Archers in a drama class.

HEARING FIRM OPENS FLAGSHIP STORE IN MUMBLES

• Hearing Aid batteries • Free Home Visits

Private Audiologists Hearing Wales have opened a state of the art hearing clinic at Number 99 on Newton Road (previously Gower Gallery). This is Mumbles’ only bespoke hearing centre, and perhaps not before time given ‘Mumbles’ quirky name!

BESPOKE HEARING CARE The company provides customer-centred hearing care packages with the latest in hearing aid technology from all manufacturers. Customers receive lifetime aftercare as part of the Hearing Wales model, which means there are no hidden costs for follow-up care or adjustments after the initial fitting.

“We brought Ben’s experience as an Audiologist and my medical industry background together and combined it with our own passion for helping people and making a difference to their lives.”

MICROSUCTION

Trine said:

It’s the fourth Hearing Wales clinic to open in the South Wales region. Directors Ben and Trine Davies opened their first hearing centre in Uplands in 2009. Narberth and Cardiff clinics opening in recent years, and the company now employs around 20 people across the region.

“Our plan with Hearing Wales when we launched the business was to bring together our family business values of fair pricing and personalised customer-centred care along with clinical professionalism and the best audiological equipment in the area.

Often hearing loss or discomfort in the ears can be caused by excess ear wax. The gold standard procedure for removing it according to audiology professionals is by microsuction and you can book your appointment at any Hearing Wales clinic.

Directors Ben and Trine Davies are behind Hearing Wales and they live close to their new Hearing Centre.

GET A TEST The company is also very keen to raise awareness of the importance of checking your hearing, which the World Health Organisation named as a priority for 2019. Ben said: “Hearing loss, especially age-related hearing loss can happen so gradually that it can be years before people take any steps to address it as they learn to ‘cope’ – in fact, the average person waits 10 years before getting that first hearing test! “Red flags that you may have hearing loss include having to turn the television up louder or a feeling that people are mumbling when they speak. “Getting your hearing loss dealt with early pays dividends in the future.”

TIME FOR YOU

Holidays have a new home... New wave holidaying? Jonathan Roberts finds out this year’s hideouts are more luxurious than ever From coastal tranquillity to countryside adventures, it’s easy to see why Pembrokeshire remains one of the country’s favourite staycation destinations.

simpler wooden glamping pods, through to amazing safari tents, poppy pods and other lodges all featuring hot tubs, Celtic Holidays provides something for everyone.

And with a myriad of places to base yourself, from seaside hotels to campsites large and small, there are many ways to explore this corner of west Wales.

It’s a special welcome from the moment you arrive, whether that’s at Noble Court, Croft Country Park or Meadow House. Each site provides all the essentials for a family holiday or short break - from a swimming pool to children’s park, while retaining a unique feeling of community due to their size.

For families, particularly those with young children, finding the balance between adrenaline-fuelled fun and an escape from the stresses of the daily grind can be more challenging. Which is why holiday parks remain such an integral part not only of the British summertime getaway, but as holiday homes for a permanent retreat. Tucked away among peaceful green fields or nestled above the dramatic Pembrokeshire coastline, yet just a stone’s throw from some of the county’s most popular attractions, you will find Celtic Holidays’ trio of parks, which make up the long-established family-run business now celebrating its 20th year. Currently acknowledged as the ‘best in Wales’ for camping and glamping experiences, having been named winner of the National Tourism Award in this category, Celtic Holidays has holiday homes to buy or rent, with each park boasting accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, with a unique attention to detail that this family-run business prides itself on. From luxurious accommodation, complete with high-spec fixtures and fittings, to

For food lovers, Croft Country Park boasts a great eatery at Charlie’s Restaurant and Bar, and guests at Meadow House Holiday Park can enjoy Charlie’s steaks, grills and pizzas.

specific rental units available across all parks, from static holiday homes to luxury lodges with hot tubs. With some of Wales’ best-loved visitor attractions, including Folly Farm, Pembroke Castle and the sands of Tenby a short drive from the doorstep, each park is centrally located, meaning they are the perfect places from which to experience the very best of Pembrokeshire. And Celtic Holidays currently have some great offers on the latest holiday home accommodation – including the spectacular exclusive Rowans development of eight luxury pitches at Croft Country Park.

If glamping is more your style, then Noble Court is the perfect choice, as it’s also home to Celtic Escapes’ luxury lodges and glamping accommodation. There’s less of the frenetic pace of the larger, national holiday park chains. Instead, guests can experience an atmosphere more akin to a friendly country club, where the emphasis is very much on family time, free from too many distractions. With comfortable and modern leisure spaces, from the high-end pool area, gym and beauty offer of Croft Country Park to the glamping pods and luxury lodges with hot tubs at Noble Court, and breathtaking coastal views of Meadow House, whether you choose to stay for a short or long break, Celtic Holidays is a perfect choice for a place in the west Wales countryside.

Summer Holiday Arrangements Post Separation In many cases, divorce has a devastating impact on a family, especially where children are involved. One of the significant challenges for separated parents can be agreeing on the arrangements for the children during the summer. Holidays, especially when one parent wants to take the children abroad, can result in tense and emotional discussions, sadly sometimes in front of the children, following which one parent is inevitably disappointed. It is important to bear in mind that generally, summer holidays are there to benefit the children, rather than the parents. Unfortunately, often one or both parents lose focus and turn discussions into a purely mathematical exercise during which they try to ensure they take exactly their 50% entitlement for each of the summer holidays. This might not work on a practical level due to work commitments and can lead to the children toing and froing between their parents or missing out on specific events which one family has planned. Further, it may not work on an emotional level where depending on the children’s ages, consideration should be given to their wishes and feelings.

Sara Plant, partner and head of family law at Peter Lynn & Partners Solicitors, talks this month about holiday arrangements between parents who are separated

What are our top tips? 1. Plan ahead Always tell the other party in advance what your proposals are. You want to avoid a situation where both parents book holidays at the same time, and there are often other competing factors to be taken into account and co-ordinated such as grandparents, step-families, weddings, and time off work to be arranged. The whole issue can easily become a logistical minefield with the children themselves at the centre so discuss holidays as far in advance as you can. 2. Holiday details The next question is what information you will provide to the other party about the holiday. As most parents will have parental responsibility for their children, they have a right to know where the children are. As an absolute minimum, you should tell the other parent where you are going, where you will be staying

152 SWANSEA LIFE

and how they can contact you in an emergency. The times and dates of when you are travelling are essential also. 3. Communication while on holiday One question we often get asked is: “How will I know the children are safe?” Ideally, if you are concerned about holiday arrangements and the children’s safety, you will speak to the other parent in advance about what worries you have so that some safeguards can be put in place. In the same breath, the parent who is taking the children away needs to be able to have quality time with the children. Having an absent parent continually ringing them is likely to make the children anxious, possibly homesick and raise tensions between parents either during the holiday or upon the return home which could spoil the trip completely. Perhaps agree a time and date when the children can speak, but limit this to once or twice a week. What happens when parents can’t agree on the holiday arrangements? For instance, perhaps one parent wants to take the child on holiday abroad and the other parent has the passports and won’t agree. In this case, you can apply for what is called a specific issue order. This is an order of the court dealing with a specific set of facts and limited to one narrow point. The ultimate question that the court has to decide is what is in the best interests of the children. If you and your ex-partner are not able to agree on matters yourselves, we have many experienced lawyers at Peter Lynn & Partners who specialise in this area of law. We also refer many clients to mediators to facilitate discussions between parents. In our experience, the more amicable discussions can remain, the more likely parents will remain focused on what is best for the children, rather than on winning the battle they believe they have with their ex-partner surrounding holiday contact. Swansea businessman Eddie Whitney keeps us up to date with his charity work and social diary... ’ve been thinking to myself for a little while it’s about time my old friend Mal Pope came up with a new musical. Having been there for the premiere of the Cappuccino Girls and then again for the sequel, Cappuccino Girls – The Paradox of Choice, I felt sure his next show was bound to be the latest episode in the life of the caffeine-addicted ladies. So, I have to say my old mate has taken me by surprise. It must have been last autumn when he called me to say The Grand Theatre wanted him to put a show together this summer to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Swansea becoming a city. Mal can be a bit of an old tease when he wants to be, so he started making me guess what it was going to be about.

I

154 SWANSEA LIFE

‘Does it have any coffee in it?’ I asked. Mal said ‘No’. ‘There must be a barista in the show?’ I said. No again. ‘It must have the word Girls in the title?’ No, No, No.! That’s when he told me, he wanted his next show to be Calon Lân: The Musical. The idea behind the show is a terrific Swansea story that really does go all around the world. In 1904 Evan Roberts, a 26-year-old ex-miner, told his family and friends that God Almighty had visited him every night in his bedroom overlooking the Loughor Estuary. What’s more, he told them he had been personally commissioned to lead a worldwide religious revival starting in Swansea. Now put yourself in the place of the people who knew Evan Roberts and you will have some idea of the response Evan got to his message. But within weeks his revival had started and soon travelled all over the world, the USA, China, India, even Madagascar.

Now although I’ve been a song and dance man and I love all types of musical genres, I’ve always had a real soft sport for our traditional male voice choirs and there are none better than the Morriston Orpheus. When Mal shared with me a song from the show he had recorded with the choir, I knew he had another hit on his hands. I’ve asked him to allow me to share it with you. If you scan this QR code it will take you straight to the video. He also sent me some pictures of him recording at the BBC Studios in Alexandra Road. I jumped at the chance to get my best suit on for yet another Mal Pope premiere a couple of weeks ago. And brilliant it was too!
