Mojave Desert (HSUMD) has become a community center of activity that, among other things, recognizes and supports Veterans who have served our country.

The ways HSUMD supports veterans are many and varied. They include the establishment of a Veterans Memorial Building that displays and honors the stories of our local Veterans and their service. They include hosting a monthly Veterans Breakfast for all Veterans and their spouses at the Historic USO Building.

And HSUMD hosts a regular gathering of a Stress Support Group. on Tuesday evening, starting at 1800 hours at the Veterans Memorial Building located at 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd, the Stress Support Group meets under the leadership of Dr. Jiselle Esparza. Exposure to traumatic combat and operational experiences affects service members and Veterans spiritually, psychologically, biologically, and socially. A Veteran with a good job, good social supports, and a healthy leisure routine may have an easier readjustment to civilian life. Jackie “Jack” Lamar Brown Jackie “Jack” Lamar Brown was born on April 20, 1947, and he passed away March 29, 2018. Jack was born in De Funiak Springs, Florida to William Sparks Brown and Elnora (Hightower) Brown. Jack was the oldest of two siblings, his brother Allan Brown and sister Lydia Spiers.

Jack graduated from Ponce De Leon High School, FL in 1965. He joined the Navy in 1968 during the Vietnam era and served his country proudly for fourteen years. In the Navy, among other specialties, Jack trained in Explosive Ordnance Disposal diving. Jack honorably left the service as an E-5 Ordnance Mechanic, earning a Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and other unit commendations during his Navy career. Jack took a job at China Lake continuing in the field of EOD at China Lake in 1978. He retired from the base in 2006, well respected in his field and the Branch Head of Ordinance Evaluation & Research Office. Jacks enthusiasm for his field of expertise, EOD never left him. He still loved blowing things up! Jack married his first wife, Mary Kathryn Marshall (deceased), in 1970. He

then met and then married Leslie Brockwell in 1998 and immediately stepped into not just being a husband but that of a father to her young children. Like many other roles in his life, Jacks dedication and commitment to his new family was heartfelt and fierce. He waited patiently for Leslie to join him in retirement, occupying himself with long deserved mornings of sleeping in and planning out their future retirement adventures. When Leslie finally retired they hit the road, never looking back. They crossed the country together visiting family and friends more than once. Jack even took off on a solo adventure on his motorcycle driving from Ridgecrest to his hometown of Ponce De Leon, Florida and back. Together, Jack and Leslie camped and fished at Rock Creek every chance they got. He was always up for an adventure, and he had the perfect partner to accompany him. Jack wasn’t born in this valley, but he made this his forever home. He lived here by choice because he truly loved it here. He knew and explored this area and surrounding areas like this valley was his backyard playground, and he was a kid with free-reign. He’d be happy to share all he knew about this beautiful desert, and he was always eager to learn more. Among other things, Jack was an avid outdoorsman. At 70 he still fished, hunted, hiked and roamed the deserts and mountains in his Jeep He was a member of more than one Jeep club, and he and Leslie spent many happy days and nights on excursions with their Jeep friends. If the weather were right, you’d find him either hiking the hills in search of a photo opportunity, snakes or just to spend time swapping stories with his hiking buddies. Jack loved to swap stories. He was a good man, a great soldier, a loving family man, father, grandfather and a loyal friend. And he was an excellent husband to his wife Leslie, nursing her through the most challenging of health issues, colon cancer. He was her hero for his never-failing compassion sweetened with his witty southern charm and endless optimism. She would often say that he made her laugh in the most challenging times she could imagine. Without his support, love, and confidence she could never have recovered as quickly as she did from her surgeries and treatments. At a drop of a hat Jacks nature was to help out friends, family and strangers alike and he was always quick to share his wisdom filled or joke filled Jack-isms to help lighten anyone's burden. Being involved in his family was as important to him as any job he’d ever held. His wife, sons, grandkids, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles and friends from years past were still benefactors of his sense of humor, solid advice, encouragement and love. Just one of the many things that will be missed about Jack, ”uncle” Jack to so many. These days when not with his friend doing “grown-up things,” he was often in the company of several, if not all, of his grandchildren. They will forever benefit, as their fathers had, from his unselfish devotion to them all. He impishly instilled in them his love for the outdoors, with a heart for enthusiastic exploring even if it was just in grandmas and grandpas own backyard or at Rock City, their special place. He would lead them on many joyful lizard and horned toad hunts. He imparted to them his enthusiasm for living a full life, and the wonder of exploring the world. He gave that and so much more to his family, old friends and new, Navy buddies, his country and his community. He will be missed for these things and so much more.

Jack is survived by his brother and sister. As well as his sons, Benjamin (Michelle) Brockwell, William Brockwell (Kadie Dunnaway) grandchildren, Benji, Tyler, William, Whitney, Joey, and Hunter. Also, Jack is survived by many family members and friends; too many to list but by name he knew them all. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. And with his beloved wife Leslie at his side, Jack left this world far too soon.

Service will be held at 2 pm April 28, at the Calvary Church followed by a short graveside service and a Celebration of Life back at Calvary Church, 210 E. Springer Ave. Ridgecrest

Leslie Anne Brown Leslie Anne Brown was born on January 19, 1956, in Santa Monica, CA and passed away March 29, 2018. Her birth fulfilled the dream of her loving parents, Benjamin and Maria Brown to complete their family and they adored her as much as she loved them. The family moved to China Lake California in January of 1964 when her father got a job on the base. Leslie thrived in her new hometown and began making friends quickly, friends with whom she held close her entire life.

Leslie graduated from Burroughs High School in 1974. She received her AA from Cerro Coso Community College in 1984 and an Associate of Science Degree in Electronic Technology in 1985. In 1982 she married Alonza P. Brockwell and they had two children, Benjamin and William. After her divorce, she met and married the love of her life, Jack Brown. Jacks love for Leslie included his love and devotion to her sons and every member of her growing family and circle of crazy friends. It was one of the many things she admired about him and about this wonderful new life they made together.

Leslie followed her husband gleefully into retirement as she retired in the year 2011. Her final position on the base was as an Electronic Technician, a job she excelled in and she blazed her own path in as a woman in a male dominated field. Throughout her wonderful career, Leslie worked hard in every new position and along the way she made many friends with whom she remained close long after her retirement. Leslie and Jack hit the retirement road running; more than once they crisscrossed the country visiting family and friends along their way. If they weren’t traveling across the country, they were fishing and camping at Rock Creek or rescuing animals that became part of their quite large-in-numbers fur family. She’d follow Jack to remote locations, and as he was out hunting or scouting for deer, she’d be in the motorhome cutting out fabric squares or sewing something for some lucky recipient of her talents and love.

She enjoyed cooking family dinners and imparting her proud Greek heritage flair into amazing creations. She became an avid quilter and joined the High Desert Quilt Guild. She was humbled and proud that she had served one year as the President of the guild and she was in her 2nd term when she passed away. She also served on the board of the Salvation Army in Ridgecrest for several years. Leslie, along with her husband Jack, joined Jeep clubs and spent many happy hours, days and nights scouring the deserts making many new and good friends and memories.

She was always happy to go anywhere at the drop of hat and always up to new adventures.

Leslie will be remembered for so many things, her love for her family is first and foremost. Her sons were her pride and joy and her grandchildren, one by one, stole her heart. She was a fantastic mother and amazing as a grandmother. Her determination to rise above and succeed, no matter the challenge was unmatchable even in difficult times. Diagnosed with colon cancer in November of 2015 a new challenge was given to her. And she met this with the same determination that had served her well throughout her life. To those who loved her, they felt the unfairness and helplessness of the diagnosis but watched in awe as she rose to fight this battle. Each brave step of the way that she took she unknowingly imparted them all with comfort and her strength even though it was them that wanted to share theirs with her. She made the difficult seem far easier than it was, the hard times better than they were. And she was winning her fight, growing stronger, finding her way back into every fabric store she could. She had taken up chair yoga, and water aerobics and getting back into the swing of never standing still and snuggling her grand babies every chance she got. Her smile, laughter, her prankster sense of humor and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone, especially family and friends will be greatly missed. She was smart, witty and talented. She was everyone's loudest cheerleader, best friend, favorite cousin or awesome aunt. She will be missed beyond words by her family, friends and her community. She leaves behind countless benefactors of her endless love, zeal for life and quilts made from her heart.

The impressive replica of the great Vietnam Memorial Wall is returning to Ridgecrest for one final viewing in Freedom Park for five days from Thursday, June 28 through Monday, July 2. To help raise funds necessary to transport, assemble, and provide security for the extensive 24-hour per day viewing period, the public is asked to contact Carol Coy at 760-608-9251 to assist with needed, tax-deductible donations. To help in this worthy cause, two well-known local bands are donating their considerable talents for an exciting evening of music and merriment. The “Sheleighlys” and “Six Feet Under” will perform from 6p.m. to 2a.m. Saturday, May 19 at Fury’s Sports Bar, 1353 W. Inyokern Road. Food vendors, drink specials, and chance drawings will be part of the fun! Tickets are on sale now at the bar for just $3 per person, $5 on the night of the event.
