KNURLING TOOLS
In 1895, visionary entrepreneur Daniel Swarovski. left Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) and moved to Wattens, a small village in the Austrian Tyrol to set up a factory specialising in the industrial production of cut crystal stones. His new, mechanical method of cutting crystal gemstones revolutionised the fashion jewellery industry and Swarovski became the world's leading producer of precision-cut crystal. Today, alongside the fashion and jewellery industry, Swarovski crystals are also used in lighting products, building architecture and home dĂŠcor objects. Swarovski today is an international corporation of over 26,000 employees, operating in over 120 countries. Still based in Wattens, Tyrol, the company is family-owned and run, with a dynamic team of 4th and 5th generation family members at the helm. In 2008, Swarovski achieved global sales of EUR 2.52 billion.
PRECISION CUSTOMER FOCUS PROBLEM SOLVING FLEXIBILITY QUALITY
KNURLING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL
In 1935, Wilhelm Swarovski, son of the original founder, was 47 years of age. As an avid hobby astronomer, Wilhelm applied the specialised glass production and finishing technologies already used to manufacture jewellery stones in his father's factory to develop a novel prism fabrication and grinding process. Wilhelm went on to found SWAROVSKI OPTIK KG in Absam, Tyrol, in 1949. Today, his great granddaughter Carina Schiestl-Swarovski is chairwoman of the executive board of this internationally renowned optics company. SWAROVSKI OPTIK binoculars, telescopes, rifle scopes, optronic instruments, range finders and image intensifiers are chosen by professionals the world over for their exceptional precision, crystal clear optics, ergonomic perfection and longevity. The SWAROVSKI OPTIK industrial products division also manufactures optical, mechanical and electronic components and knurling tools of the highest quality at the Absam site in Tyrol. Our primary focus is our customers and their requirements, and all of our solutions are designed with this in mind. Like the entire Swarovski Group, precision is the driving force behind this division and all of its employees. We have over 60 years of experience and expertise in precision optics, precision engineering and electronics.
There are two different types of knurling process: cut knurling and form knurling. Each of these processes has its own particular areas of application with associated advantages and disadvantages.
CUT KNURLING Cutting APPLICATION
• Maximum precision and surface quality
• Can be used for knurling thin materials without deformation
• Saves time on account of higher cutting speed and feed rate
• Compatible with virtually any material, including cast iron and plastic
• Knurling to workpiece flange possible to a limited extent only
PROPERTIES
• Cutting process protects the expensive lathe
• No or minimal changes to the external workpiece diameter
• Minimal pressure on workpiece and lathe
• Negligible surface compression
FORM KNURLING Non-cutting
APPLICATION
• Cold forming the material
• Can be used for knurling up to workpiece flange
• All standard knurl patterns (to DIN 82) offered
• Knurling is possible at any position on the workpiece
PROPERTIES
• Not recommended for visible knurls
• Cold forming increases the external diameter of the workpiece
• It compresses the surface of the workpiece
• Form knurling is not recommended for thin materials
• Form knurling on workpieces with a small diameter is possible to a limited extent only
• Lathe is subjected to a greater load due to the higher pressure
• Slower cutting speed and feed rate

STR-A / STR-B QUICK CUT KNURLING TOOLS
These tools are used with manual and CNC-controlled lathes. They are also intended for use with transfer machines and turning centres where the workpiece remains stationary and the tool is rotated around it. Their design (with three knurling cutters) means that they can also be easily used to machine long workpieces with small diameters.

QUICK FORM KNURLING TOOLS
The new B2 marks the start of the new QUICK/Swarovski Optik form knurling tool product line. The B2 form knurling tool is based on the tried-and-tested, flexible, extremely stable A2 concept with a dovetail guide between the shank and the tool body, which minimises vibrations and maximises the service life of the knurling wheels.
• The B2 tool sets a new benchmark for flexibility: - The B2 form knurling tool can be used in a variety of different ways. Not only can it be used as a left and right-hand tool on the main and sub spindle of CNC controlled and conventional lathes: it can also be used with one knurling wheel (e.g. straight knurl) or with two knurling wheels (e.g. cross knurl). • Maximum stability:
• Reduced need for stock thanks to extreme versatility • Quick and easy to change the knurling wheels thanks to simple removal and fixing of the terminal strip via an excentre. • Simple and precise fine adjustment of the tool body at the shank via eccentric clamping.
- The tool bodies used in the B2 series are mounted using backlashfree surface clamping.
• The integrated coolant unit cools the knurling wheels simply and effectively, helping to maximise service life.
- The vibrations caused by the machining process are reduced and can be dampened more effectively which prolongs the service life of the knurling wheels.
• Compact size
- Please note that, due to the nature of the form knurling process, despite the Quick dovetail guide, form knurling tools always create more vibrations than the cut knurling process.

Optimal service life thanks to Q-DUR®, TIN & TICN coatings and plasma nitration The service life of knurling wheels essentially depends on the raw materials, knurl tooth geometry, intended application, cutting speed, cooling etc. However, service life can be prolonged by subjecting the raw material to additional treatments. The Quick Q-DUR® coating is offered as standard on all knurling wheels. This PVD coating with a microhardness of 3300 HV helps to create knurled surfaces of a high decorative quality and guarantees a longer service life in the machining of high-tensile materials. TIN &TICN coatings and plasma nitration can also help to prolong service life and are available on request. Testing is recommended to find the most appropriate treatment for your particular intended application.
KNURLING WHEELS Non-cutting Our form knurling wheels are made from HSS.
