Milled knurls of top quality Objects that people touch are always evaluated very carefully. For the combination of the sense of sight and touch influences the expectation of quality considerably. In terms of producing high-quality knurled surfaces, Swarovski Optik KG has set worldwide standards of quality with the QUICK knurling tool systems. Because more than 45 years ago our technicians developed this highly precise technology for the self-production of optical and fine-mechanical instruments, and thus also enhanced the quality of these products from the standpoint of design. This also made it possible to establish a clear demarcation to the products of “low price manufacturers“.

KNURLING TOOLS

Since interest in this system increased so strongly in the following years, it was decided to put this technology onto the market independently under the name of QUICK Knurling Tools. While the world patents from that time have run out in the meantime, the qualitative lead has become even greater. For the secret lies in the exactness of production. This begins already in the design and construction stage, for the toolholder and knurling tool directly interact with each other. Depending on the material requirement, desired service life and specified surface finish of the knurl, the knurling cutters are produced in a not coated or coated version. Complete systems are offered, designed and optimized by experts for all types of machine tools – from the small mechanic’s lathe to CNC multiple-spindle auto-lathes or machining centers. Particularly with expensive lathes, where it’s a question of long-term maintenance of the machine geometry, one likes to take advantage of the cutting of knurls, because in comparison to pressure-type tools a much lower processing pressure is required. Our A Series tools, available at the market since 2004, are flexible to use. They can be used on all turning lathes and machining centres on main- and sub spindle. The modular construction system from A Series replaces a multitude of single tools. As the market leader, we place great value on customer service and counseling. We offer technically perfect, fast and reason-ably priced ser vice. With the certified milling systems of the trademark QUICK, in conformance with DIN 82 all solid metals and almost all plastics can be given straight, cross, diamond and spiral knurls. Models can be supplied to the world market on the basis of all relevant standards and regulations.

Good reasons for deciding on QUICK > Quick knurling tools are metal-cutting tools > Excellent knurl quality > Considerable saving of time > Knurling of difficult materials (PVC, cast iron, etc.) > Knurling of delicate workpieces with low cutting action

KNURLING TOOLS

> Preservation the lifetime of machine tools > Precise knurls (uniformity, ø tolerance, etc.) > Possibility of adjusting axially parallel knurls > User-friendly due to precise, synchronous adjustment > Two kinds of knurling cutters > Special tools on request > Large selection of knurling cutter pitches

Advantages A Series > Stability from wheel holders and spindle unchanged > Can be used as left hand, right hand or conventional tool > Can be used on main- and sub spindle > Shanks can be changed > 1 shank and 2 heads for RAA-RKE-RGE > Surface clamping among shank + head > Operation from both sides > New washer with Torx screw > Central clamping from the wheel holders directly at the knurling wheels > Set Offer > Service friendly > Stock reduction > More compact construction > A1 tools with adapter for long-turning lathes

3

Classification of QUICK knurls according to the DIN 82 standard

KNURLING TOOLS

Straight knurl This knurl corresponds to the form designated in DIN 82 RAA as a “knurl with axially parallel channels“.

Spiral knurl Designated according to DIN 82 as a “RBL left knurl” and “RBR right knurl”. With QUICK knurling tools it is possible to produce knurls with a 15°, 30° or 45° left- or right-hand spiral.

Cross knurl These do not correspond to the form known in DIN 82 as RKE “cross knurl, tips raised”. They are differentiated by the fact that the cross of the pyramids is at an angle of 45° to the workpiece axis.

Diamond knurl This knurl corresponds to the form standardized under DIN 82 RGE as “left/right knurl, tips raised”. The pyramids intersect each other at an angle of 30° to the workpiece axis.

QUICK knurling tool groups The QUICK knurling tools offered in this catalog consist of five groups: 1. The new developed tools from A Series are flexible to use. They can be used on CNC and manual lathes. The patented adjustment system, integrated in the shank, allows a multitude of applications for this tool.

KNURLING TOOLS

2. Tools with the letters FL in their type designation are suitable for the production of straight knurls (DIN 82 RAA) and spiral knurls (DIN 82RBR/RBL) with 15째, 30째 and 45째 spirals. Special models can be produced on request for specific machine types. 3. All tools with the letters KF in their type designation are suited for the production of cross (similar to DIN 82 RKE) and diamond knurls (DIN 82 RGE). These tools are equipped with a synchronous knurling cutter adjustment feature allowing comfortable, precise and fast adjustment to the diameters required by the customer. For certain machine types special models can be produced on request. 4. Tools with the letters STR in their type designation can be used for the production of straight (DIN 82 RAA), cross (similar to DIN 82 RKE) and diamond knurls (DIN 82 RGE). Special tools on request. STR tools can also be used rotating. 5. STABIL tools are designed for the large-series production of straight (DIN 82 RAA), cross (similar to DIN 82 RKE) and diamond knurls (DIN 82 RGE). These tools are special tools and are designed for only one workpiece diameter and one knurling cutter pitch (making according to customers drawing).

Types of QUICK knurling cutters QUICK knurling cutters are manufactured from a specially developed powder-metallurgical high-speed steel. The individual production steps are carried out with the greatest precision on state-of-the-art machine tools. Heat treatment takes place in electronically controlled hardening plants under constant quality control conditions. Of the available knurling cutters the type should be used that best suits the requirements specified for the knurled surface. Grounded tooth flanks This is the standard type that can be used in the produced quality for most applications. A very good result can be achieved with this type, especially for cross and diamond knurl patterns.

KNURLING TOOLS

Ground and coated tooth flanks This type achieves a longer service life in comparison to the type with only ground tooth flanks. For optical demanding knurling surfaces it is recommended to use the ground and coated version.

19

Tool presetting All QUICK A-Serie knurling tools can be measured optically with a special setting gauge on presetting devices. This setting gauge is delivered together with every A-Serie knurling tool.

KNURLING TOOLS

Presetting procedure for KF knurling tools 1. Dismantle knurl cutter and bushing 2. Unscrew eccentric bolt and preset the turning centre by means of spindle screw 3. Clamp eccentric bolt lightly 4. Push adjustment gauge onto closed clamping segment 5. Precision adjust the turning centre under the presetting device 6. Clamp eccentric bolt hand-tight and determine the X and Z values The measured Z value is the start of the knurl, not the collision dimension. With A1/KF tools the measured X value is taken over with a workpiece diameter of 5mm without a correction value, A2/KF tools with 8mm. Depending on the workpiece diameter the figures given in the table must be added to the X values. With this value, the knurling cutters stand about 0.2-0.3mm over the diameter to be knurled. The exact setting of the tool must be made on the machine.

Protection facing on the knurling wheels

Knurling wheel with face Knurling wheel with face

When knurling hard workpieces it may happen that a knurling wheel loses teeth. Grinding a 45° facet can improve the durability of the wheel. This applies only to models KF and STR!!! The drawing on the left hand side shows which knurling wheels may have facets. 32 mm and 42 mm Ø knurling wheels are already produced with facets. Depending on direction of rotation of workpiece only one knurling wheel with facet may be used.

The start of the knurl is of decisive importance for the quality of the knurl.

Illustration 2 With the STR and Stabil models, starting the knurl radially is not possible. With these tools it is necessary to first cut a centering step on the workpiece. For knurling cutter pitches up to 0.6 mm it suffices to machine a 30° facet with a width of about 1.5 pitches. Illustration 3 If pitches larger than 0.6 mm are knurled with the STR models, a centering step must be machined on the workpiece with a width of about 2 pitches and a depth of 1/2 pitch. The feed rate on this centering step is rapid (0.2 to 0.3 mm/rev) and the longitudinal feed is switched on after a dwell time of 2 to 3 seconds.

Illustration: 3 about 2 pitches

Ă˜ - 1/2 pitches

Illustration 1 The beginning of the knurl should be with a width of max. 1.5 mm. The knurling depth may not be started before the diameter which should be knurled. The depth setting is equal to the pitch from the knurling cutter and should be done with the infeed rate of 0.05 to 0.10 mm/rev. A dwell time of 2 to 3 seconds is necessary before switching on the longitudinal feed.
