This issue is extra special to us. Why? Because it’s about music. Something Sierra and I are extremely passionate about. And despite our lack of musical talent, we can vouch for the fact that we have great taste. Our lack of decisiveness and direction when we were brainstorming ideas for this issue lead us to the simplistic realization that our final publication should be centered on something that plays an important part in everybody’s lives. Sound. Hence, The Volume was born. Whether you’re screaming the lyrics of a The 1975 song at the top of your lungs in the car with your friends or crying in the bathtub to Celine Dion, music is always there for us as we navigate the highs and lows of life. It’s integral to our human experience. And it’s not just sound; the tempo, the beat, the lyrics and the drop that influences us in ways we cannot completely fathom. Music is much more than just a soundtrack catered to our lives, it influences our style and identity. Fashion is heavily influenced by the songs we listen to and the artists behind them. Music and fashion therefore are heavily intertwined and this final issue of ours strives to highlight that.
FINAL WORDS FROM COURTNEY COTTERILL As my time with Swatch comes to its final close, I want to thank everyone who has supported me throughout these past two years as Editor. To my friends, family, and staff your love and encouragement has been boundless and does not go unnoticed. This has been an incredible journey for me despite the many sleepless nights and hours of blood, sweat and tears (quite literally). After transferring to Florida State University, I lacked direction but through joining Swatch I found a home where I could freely express myself creatively with my writing and photography. As my involvement with the magazine grew over time, I gained not only the position as Editor, but some of my best friends. I will always reflect back on these years as some of my greatest memories. When I became Editor it became my mission to make those who came before me proud and to expand our creative community in Tallahassee. By tripling the amount of staff members involved this last semester, I am proud to say I did just that. Without your support, that could have never been possible. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, I am eternally grateful. Swatch me work one last time...
Yours truly, C&S

Get Your Glow On The “plant of immortality” known today as Aloe Vera benefits the body in several ways. Internally, the plant has been linked to relieving heartburn and aiding in treating constipation. Externally, Aloe Vera has been implemented into many beauty regimens thanks to its’ healing properties. With the summer heat quickly approaching, you’ll want to protect your skin at all costs. Aloe Vera gel is beneficial to both your face and your skin. Its’ cooling elements paired with its’ anti-inflammatory elements makes it the best remedy for soothing sunburns and because it’s packed with antioxidants and minerals, it’s frequently used for reducing the healing time for wounds. Aloe Vera gel has

been used to treat blemishes and skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Aloe Vera gel has also helped treat and prevent dandruff which has been caused by dry skin, fungal infections, irritated skin. It also moisturizes the hair and when it’s consistently used in a hair care regimen, it restores shine in your hair. The best part is that it isn’t greasy and doesn’t leave your hair with a residue.
D.I.Y. - Sunburn Spray • • • • •
1 spray bottle ½ cup of Aloe Vera gel ¼ cup of witch hazel 6 tbsp. of water 6-10 drops of any essential oil (optional)
In a small bowl, whisk the Aloe Vera gel with the essential oil, witch hazel, and water. (If the mixture is too thick, continue to add a tablespoon of water until it’s thin enough.) Then add the mixture into the spray bottle and spray your body when you need relief from a sunburn.

Baking and A Quick Refresh
Sod
Ahhhhhhh, baking soda! It can be found in your refrigerator eliminating odors, used in baking as a leavening agent, and now, it’s becoming more popularly used for skin care. From preventing acne and shrinking the appearance of pores to working as an exfoliator and getting rid of dark marks, you’ll wish you started using baking soda sooner.
Baking soda is mildly abrasive which makes it the perfect exfoliator. Now, while it’s safe to use on the skin, it’s best not to use it more than twice a week because overusing it may irritate the skin. Baking soda contains antibacterial elements that actively work to stop future blemishes while shrinking current blemishes. Tired of blackheads? Well, you’re in luck because thanks to baking soda’s astringent-like elements, you’ll be able to cleanse those pores. Clogged pores are normally caused by dirt and bacteria seeping into the pores which leads to blackheads and breakouts. By implementing baking soda into your skincare routine, find yourself one step closer to smooth and healthy skin.

BILLIE ELLISH BILLIE ELLISH BILLIE ELLISH BILLIE ELLISH BILLIE ELLISH BILLIE ELLISH BILLIE ELISH Front runner for Coachella with a voice that has the allure
of a siren, Billie Eilish is taking everything we know about music, the industry, and teenagers and turning it on it’s colorful head. Her sound is hard to pin down: it combines the mysticism of Lana Del Rey with a razor sharp edge. She popped up on everyone’s radar in a big way over the past summer, and now, she’s all anyone can talk about.

Like, we’re all equal…I don’t want to be on a different level.” In a short amount of time, Billie has amassed a cult-like fan following that eclipses most other artists and rivals that of the biggest names in the business. Mispronounce her last name? Don’t worry, her fans will quickly let you know. But part of what makes Billie so incredibly special is her own point of view of her fans, she’s even openly used fan art as inspiration for her music videos. She regards them in such a humble, pure way that it feels more like a friendship where one of you happens to do the occasional duet with Khalid. Like make it in a fucking closet.” So, what IS it about Billie Eilish that has the world as we know it wrapped around her skull-ringed finger? Is it her? Her sound? Both? Or something more than we could ever describe? “I just want to create stuff that people can feel.” Billie takes our fascination, as humans, for storytelling and delivers narratives both elegant and twisted.
Her music has rapidly become the soundtrack that constitutes the backdrop for our lives. If you’d never heard of Billie or her music before last summer, you probably were introduced by her 2018 single “you should see me in a crown,” a heady, pulsating melody paired

In the early 2000s, reggaeton shifted and began to attract an audience in the United States. In 2005, the first song that I remember with Spanish lyrics, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira, was released. “Hips Don’t Lie” went on to top the charts in over 55 countries, spending two weeks in the top spot on the US Billboard charts, won a People’s Choice Award, and went Triple Platinum with the help of over 1.9 million ringtone sales in 2005. That same year, Rihanna released her debut record “Music of the Sun”, which featured the sound of island and latin music: riddim. Listen to “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira and “Music of the Sun” by Rihanna back to back; pay very close attention to the drums. The groove is very similar, one may even be able to argue that the connection is present, but loose. A more astonishing proof comes by comparing the origin of riddim, with its modern successors. Play “Taki Taki” by DJ Snake and “Dem Bow” by Shabba Ranks, a champion of Island music. The drum beat is nearly identical - the tempo is.

Teaching
There’s no surprise in learning that dance music is driven by the drums and bass, and Caribbean has undoubtedly given us the power of its rhythm. Along with the groove came the languages native to the style. There are nearly limitless possibilities on how the style spread, about who carried it from the lands of the Caribbean and carried it over the warm seas into the United States, but one thing is sure. The riddim drum found its way into a culture that desperately needed to learn to dance, and if there’s any place for the sharing and valuing of powerful style, it’s the United States of America. Spanish music is finding its way into a culture that is learning how to feel, besides, no one listens to the lyrics anyway.

DON’T WORRY BABY - THE BEACH BOYS
SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK N ROLL. An infamous song title by the pop legend, Ian Dury, that describes the rebellious and revolutionizing ( transforming) era of the 1960’s. The 60’s is often characterized as a period of utter defiance against the restricting conservatism and social norms that the youth of the time felt entrapped by. There was a strong desire for social change that arose due to issues involving women’s rights, opposition against the Vietnam War draft as well as a powerful urge to seek freedom from the conservative and restrictive ideals of the generations that came before. The youth that is resposnsible for this stark change in mindset that paved the way for our expressive modern society is known as the “counterculture” of the 60’s. The rebellious nature of the 60’s youth population opened the door to the extreme freedom of expression we have today in fashion, music and opinions . Things that we don’t even think twice about in present day, like that new black mini skirt from H&M or your favorite pair of flared jeans that you find every excuse to wear, are all common fashions today that found their roots in the 60’s, when the youth was experimenting with their wardrobes in a way they never had before. Something even as basic and mindless as you deciding to wear a crop top on a night out is a basic fashion that can be given credit to the female youth of the 60’s who had begun to realize that they had the right to their own bodies and the freedom to dress as they pleased and as a result, they began to reveal more skin in the clothing they chose.
today through the current trend of cropped band tees that are casually worn as a fashion statement and tribute these legendary groups of the 60’s. The 60’s is also seen as a catalyst for the major uproar of music festival hype in our generation today. The famous Woodstock music festival of 1969 is known as a major turning point in music history, that made way for the extreme popularity of festivals today like Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Coachella. These festivals are rising every year in popularity due to the extreme sense of freedom and individuality they stand for that is expressed through their influx of good music and trendy fashion statements. The colorful and lively aesthetic of today’s music festivals that is shown through not only the “hippie look” of flower headbands and bohemian style pants but also the recent festival trend of tight silver disco shorts and colorful sequined bra tops, are all ways that people express their freedom of dress. This freedom of expression that is so openly accepted today through the clothes we wear, the way we speak, and how we express our opinions was a concept that was very new to the youth of the 60’s. However, their urge to live in a judgment free and fair society was a mindset that greatly paved the way for today’s expressive culture that is progressively beginning to encourage individuality in all areas of life.
Many great artists also arose in the 60’s, such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Beach Boys. The extreme popularity of these groups is still acknowledged

The Bobby-Soxers came with the birth of rock’n’roll and began a rare music and fashion relationship with males leading most of the fashion trends. Bobby-Soxers were known for their ankle socks, hair ribbons, poodle skirts, and blouses. The iconic 50s image was born out of love for crooners like Frank Sinatra and the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. Elvis brought in color to male wardrobes with his pastel pink shirts, and taste for bling. We could thank him too for our love of denim, Elvis’ endorsement of Levi’s brought about our idea of the 50s denim-wearer.
DON’T WORRY BABY - THE BEACH BOYS
Two iconic looks of the decade appeared, with greatly contrasting images. Mod, with its iconic mini skirt, was brought on by the British invasion and the growing popularity of bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The fashion industry took youthfulness, and fun-loving images of these bands and thus style became more colorful. When we think of the sixties, we imagine hippies and peace signs, Woodstock and Jimi Hendrix. Continuing the trend of bright colors that define the sixties, the Hippie movement focused on free love, recreational drugs and fashion took on a psychedelic image. Bright prints and patterns, tie-dye and loose clothes for both men and women were churned out by the Summer of Love.
The relationship between music and fashion is undeniable. When music develops a unique trend, it is inevitable that a similar trend will follow in the fashion industry fueled by our passion for our favorite artists. The music industry has played a vital role in the fashions of every decade: 90s pop punk revived grunge, feeding the fashion industry, the Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion brought in Mod fashion, while others chose to rebel from mainstream in the same decade and brought forth the Hippie movement. While these examples may seem to simplify the relationship between fashion and music, the relationship is nothing but.
It’s 2019 and the eighties have taken fashion by storm once again. From miniskirts to lingerie being worn as clothing, we have Madonna to thank for some of the most iconic looks of the eighties and today. Her fashion choices have swung as far as androgynous looks, complete with pantsuits, to Marilyn Monroe inspired gowns, to the infamous cone bra. Madonna made the relationship between designers and pop artists common place, her collaborations with Jean Paul Gaultier created the cone bra, and the wedding dress featured in ‘like a virgin”. Before celebrities like Rihanna, Kanye West, and Beyonce started collaborations with designers, Madonna was paving the way for a fashion revolution that would affect us today.
The 90s brought us many iconic looks. 90s Grunge, with its artists like Kurt Cobain, and the pop punk bands. Grunge created a trend that is instantly recognizable, and currently making a comeback. Flannels, mom jeans, band tees, and fishnet stockings were a staple of any grunge wardrobe and these pieces seem to be making a comeback. The 90s also brought Rave fashion, which later inspired the 2010s “EDM” fashion. In the 90s, raves were associated with bright colors, and brands like Rainbow Brite. The promotion of Peace, Love, Unity, and respect bore similar resemblance to the 60s Summer of Love movement.

How old were you when you started to develop an interest in art? “I was around ten years old when I first began to understand that I had some skill in drawing. At that point, I did not really know what art was, but I knew that I was a little better than most of my friends at drawing. “ Were there any artists who inspired you growing up and if so, what drew you to them? What was it about their art? The first artist that I was aware of was Charles White. My parents had a print copy of a landscape by Robert Duncanson, an early American Black artist. As I began to read my art books, I learned about Picasso, Chagal and many other turn of the century modern artists. I liked Charles White because of his subject matter and Chagal because of his use of color and form. What is the message/ meaning behind “The Music of Color”? What does this piece mean to you? How did you come up with the concept? How long did it take for you to complete this piece? “The painting “The Music of Color” is an attempt to make music concrete. I believe that shapes, forms, and colors can be put together in such a way as to express the emotional qualities that some music can express. In other words, I am trying to ‘paint a song’.” Out of all the art pieces that you have created, which one(s) are you the proudest of and why? “Of the works from this show, I am most proud of “The Music of Color” and “Forest Fire”. The Music of Color painting is the work that most encapsulates the theory of the show. With the paintings in this show, I am attempting to show how color and form in visual art can be as interpretive of emotion as music can be.”

What inspires you? What has inspired your pieces and ideas for pieces? “I get ideas from current events and historic references. I also get inspiration from music and landscapes. I love looking at faces and bodies in motion or still. In other words, I am triggered by life in general.
Do you ever find yourself creating a piece that doesn’t turn out exactly how you envisioned it? Was it for the better or was it for the worse? How do you keep from getting frustrated? “Painting or creating any type of art should always be frustrating. If the work is not frustrating in conceiving or executing, many times it is dull and standard.”
Do all or most of your pieces share common themes? If so, what are those themes? “I most often work with themes about musicians, music or interpretations of feelings. I also work with social commentary in my paintings.”

“The message behind the painting “Forest Fire” has to do with the many environmental changes that the world has been going through for the last few years. ir Elton John, a legend whose music has transcended multiple generations, and will continue to far into the future, is taking a step back. Renowned for his live performances, Elton John is making his last rounds with his farewell tour: Farewell Yellow Brick Road. A man, who has recorded more anthems than I can count, is bidding the touring life “adieu”. Throughout his career, Elton John has managed to become not only a beacon of music, but also a true icon of fashion. In a word, fashion has always represented a source of play for Elton. As he developed in his career, fashion quickly became a source of boyish rebellion and experimentation. And, you can’t forget about his iconic sunglasses that give Coachella and all manner of festival fashion a run for their money. The nostalgia was palpable, the love intoxicating. I’ve seen my fair share of performers: Katy Perry, Usher, Shania Twain, Kiss, Florida Georgia Line, Paramore, T-Pain, I could go on; but, I have never witnessed an artist make such a magnanimous event feel so personal and intimate. He wasn’t performing for the woman five rows behind you or the couple two sections over. No. He was performing for you. There was no opener. I fully expected Elton John to mount the stage an hour later than the ticket time, at a minimum. Isn’t that what performers do? The more illustrious your reputation and the more impressive your standing in the celebrity community, the later your arrival, right? Not Elton John. He was punctual as ever and kicked his set off with none other than “Bennie and the Jets.” My heart soared. I completely forgot about breaking the heel of my shoe, no less than 15 minutes earlier, captivated by his presence and the melody I knew all too well. In an era where a “good performance” is measured by the artist’s interaction with the stage, whether that be through dance

choreography, leaning into the mosh pit, or simply punctuating lyrics with emotional gestures, a show where the lead artist must sit at a piano bench for the duration of the performance runs the risk of falling flat. Watching Elton perform from his piano, I can honestly say I have never been more engaged with a performer, nor more taken aback by his stage presence. He hardly moved from his seat the whole set. However, his heart and soul moved through everyone in the audience that night. Only Elton John could take something as debilitating as being anchored to a narrow, horizontal surface and morph it into one of the more unforgettable, poignant aspects of the experience. Though this is farewell, this is not goodbye forever; we can expect to hear and see more of Elton in the future. He is by no means retiring, he’s having far too much fun for that. No, he still plans on writing and releasing new music and pursuing creative projects, just without the emphasis on the stage. Which begs the question: Why is Elton, irrevocably a master showman and performer, taking his exit? While he has been performing for decades, burnout, while a seemingly glaring culprit, is not the impetuous for his decision.
In fact, it is something even more heartwarming: his children. Elton’s desire to spend quality time with his children and to be a consistent presence in their lives has necessitated a shift in where Elton spends his time. As he said it, he had “two tadpoles” who changed everything. The sincerity with which he talked about his family brought the audience into his personal sphere and made us feel connected to him. We were no longer thinking about all of the “last times” we were collectively experiencing that evening. Instead, in that moment, we were glimpsing forward at the future and felt honored to get to share in this night with him. It was poignant because not only were we saying goodbye to an enigma that colored the past five decades, but he was saying goodbye to us, too. Towards the end of the night, Elton John reflected, saying how he wouldn’t have had the incredible life he has had without his fans supporting him. This was not some halfhearted, “It’s all about you guys,” spiel. It was, effectively, him leveling with the world and conveying to them how much they mean. “I am truly sorry.” No sooner than the finish of the fist number, Elton John sincerely
apologized, saying, “If I don’t play one of your favorites, I am truly sorry. If I played every song, we’d be here until next Thursday.” It was a humble acknowledgement of what his music meant to everyone who paid to be there, while also an admission of his unavoidable humanity. He was not this untouchable, larger than life figure: he was only human. One would expect a farewell concert to fall just short, leaving you not entirely satisfied, like when the ending of a book doesn’t quite wrap everything up. You would think a performance and a man inflated with so much hype and expectation would leave you waiting for something more. Farewell Yellow Brick Road was nothing like that: you left the concert that night feeling like Elton John was everything you thought he would be and more, feeling like the songs told a story only your soul could understand, and feeling like you’d gained some unexpected insight. It felt like, for a couple of hours, you’d gained insight into a wholly authentic side of him and saw him: unguarded, rebellious as ever, fun, yet grounded. You saw Elton John.

Travis Scott is far from a new name in the music industry. Since 2015, when he released the single “Antidote,” the artist has been a wild success with each release. Before he dropped “Astroworld,” Scott released albums, “Rodeo,” “Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight,” and “Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho.” “Astroworld” has proven to be his most successful record yet, with each song a smashing success. Staff pick: “WHO? WHAT!”
Ariana Grande has proven herself as artist of the year with her never-ending flow of hit songs. The artist has followed the traditions of rap and hip-hop artists when it comes to the release of her music, straying away from the traditional release formulas of pop artists. Grande releases music when she wants, following no industry formula. Merely months after the release of her #1 album “Sweetener,” the artist released yet another #1 album, “thank u, next.” The album, titled after the artist’s hit song, features new music and loved singles reflecting her struggles in love and life. The album speaks to her public controversies including her relationship with Pete Davidson, and the great loss of Mac Miller. Staff pick: “in my head.”
Indie icon, Mitski, released her album, “Be The Cowboy,” in 2018, and the record has proved to be a stable hit since its release. In her fifth album, the artist blends the styles of indie rock, techno, and disco to create a tracklist with palpable energy. In typical Mitski fashion, the artist implements addictive guitar riffs that add edge and life to the 14-track record. Staff pick: “Geyser.”
Perhaps more than any other artist we have seen in the past few years, Musgraves proved her ability to blend boundaries and genres through her 2018 album, “Golden Hour.” The artists style reflects the best of country music, 70’s funk, and indie pop. The album has been sweeping the awards circuit with its disco style and country heart. Staff pick: “Oh, What A World.”
“GOLDEN HOUR”
LEMON GLOW - BEACH HOUSE
In his 2018 album, Drake wins the award for heaviest record. The album features 25 tracks riddled with feud-fueling bars and electric beats. The album held three #1 singles, and still holds the spot as one of the most highly listened to albums of the year. Staff pick: “Ratchet Happy Birthday.”

Beach House brings the best of her talents to her 2018 album, “7.” The synth style of this indie album combines the best of alternative lyricism and EDM energy to create the ultimate album. With a very fitting name, “7” is the seventh LP for the group and has proven to be the most loved. Staff pick: “Lemon Glow.”
“DIRTY COMPUTER”
JANELLE
MONAE Janelle Monae’s 2018 album is the perfect representation of how art and music reflect the social and political struggles of the current time. “Dirty Computer” features 14 tracks with funk undertones and rap essences. The songs on this album speak to issues of race, gender, LGBTQ+, and equality. Her music flows between the lanes of trap, funk, and R&B seamlessly. Staff pick: “Django Jane.”
This album goes beyond it’s fifteen tracks, it speaks to the natures of love in the modern era, and the romanticism that we have lost. How does a musician create art about love in the era of Tinder? “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships” does just that. Staff pick: “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You).”
Cardi B has been arguably the hottest breakout artist of the past few years. To see her progression from the original hit, “Bodak Yellow,” to her 2018 album has been nothing short of inspiring. Cardi has proven herself as the bad bitch of the music industry. The thirteentrack record calls out those who doubted her, and drips with signs of her success. Staff pick: “Be Careful.”
One month before the devastating loss of artist and revolutionary, Mac Miller, the world was given the greatest gift in the form of his final album, “Swimming.” It is difficult to remember the feeling of this album before the loss, and as it stands now as a living and breathing memorial. The thirteen-track album outlines his struggles in relationships and addiction, a foreshadowing to the loss we would feel only one month later. In life and in death, Mac Miller’s final album is a complete triumph in art. Staff pick: “2009.”

by Bre Washington From masturbation tips to self-love guidance, Killer and a Sweet Thang (KAAST) can tell you about it all! I favorably discovered KAAST my sophomore year of high school and it is “the sex ed you wish you got!” It’s my go-to lifestyle blog with everything a millennial, like myself, would wonder about. The platform was created by Eileen Kelly, an Instagram influencer and now certified sex educator, to provide an online outlet for people to discuss sex education and openly ask questions. I was able to pick the knowledgeable brain of Jacob Seferian, Editorial Director at KAAST, and question him about various topics involving safe sex practices, relationships, and sexual issues in today’s culture.

How has porn impacted our perception of sex? Does it have a positive/negative impact on our generation especially when some of it revolves around violence/ abuse as a sexual fetish? The millennial relationship to porn is complex. I actually wrote an article examining this relationship where I interviewed thirteen different millennials on how they believe porn has affected their sex lives. The verdict was that there’s good and bad. Almost everyone I interviewed developed an online viewing habit before they lost their virginity, so a lot of misinformation was spread via pornography. The false depictions of female pleasure in straight porn are very problematic because young boys think emulating a porno will satisfy their female partners. Reservely, rape fantasies are common in pornography, and while consensual aggressive sexual behavior can be a kink -- porn doesn’t reiterate the behind-the-scenes consent between the performers on screen. This creates a misalignment of what people think is appropriate in the bedroom. However, there were also positive aspects to porn. Growing up in Texas sex ed in public schools was already pretty terrible, but compounded with the fact that I was queer meant I had no idea how someone of my identity would even have sex. But the internet, namely online porn, changed that for me. I saw how gay men could be intimate, granted it was heightened, but it taught me the general mechanics. Others I interviewed also attributed learning about performance confidence, kinks, and pleasure to porn habits, women included. We need to be critical of the porn industry and what kind of narratives are being portrayed. While it’s oftentimes problematic, pornography is not an inherently evil medium.
21 QUESTIONS - 50 CENT
How should someone handle loneliness and the stigma that comes with it? How can self love be incorporated into this process? Wow, a biggie! Well, I think it’s worth saying that if you often find yourself in situations where people are making you feel less than because you’re single — seek out different social circles! Obviously, you can’t avoid a noisy Aunt at Thanksgiving, but surrounding yourself in positive environments is crucial for your mental health. On a personal level, I suggest reflecting on why you feel lonely. Oftentimes, I’ve found that loneliness is a symptom of a greater emotional dissatisfaction. For example, I tend to focus more on my single-ness when my professional and social lives are stalling, thinking a boyfriend could be a fast-fix for my blues. But our unhappiness, is often more complex than that. I’ve found that cultivating multiple areas of my life helps alleviate the pressure I put on my romantic interactions. Granted, maybe every other part of your life is going great except your love life and you really want to work on that. In that case, my advice then would be patient. And masturbation. Regarding self-love, I often think about what a friend once told me. She said that self-love needs to be an active, life-long practice. Confidence and inner peace ebbs and flows — there’s no fast fix, and you have to make a conscious effort to love and appreciate yourself everyday. It’s not easy!
Drawing on masturbation and self-love, as discussed previously, they fall hand-and-hand. It’s all about selfsatisfaction and exploring what makes you feel good. For women, methods of masturbation include: Clitoral, Vaginal, Anal. Erogenous Zones (stimulation of sensitive areas such as the nipple, neck, ear, etc.) Explain the “oral sex gap” and how it’s affecting relationships between men and women today? Studies have shown that women are far more likely to perform oral sex than they are to receive it from their male partners. This performance disparity is referred to as the oral sex gap. It’s a complex sexual and cultural issue and speaks to how women are socialized to put their sexual pleasures second to a man’s. Peggy Orenstein studied this phenomenon extensively in her book, Girls and Sex. She believes the best way to close the gap is two-fold: teach girls from an early age to prioritize their sexual satisfaction as men do, and teach boys that pleasing their partners in the bedroom is as important as their own orgasm.

An orgasm is a climax of sexual excitement during arousal. Women are able to have several different orgasms produced from erogenous zones including breast, kissing, anal, clitoral, and various areas of the vagina. On the other hand, men are able to have orgasms that involve a process of arousal, muscle contractions, and ejaculation. Orgasms feel as good as they do due to a hormone released in the brain that reduces our stress levels (blood pressure) and boosts overall libido. How do I become comfortable enough to tell my partner exactly what I want in a sexual relationship? I’d say it begins with understanding that each of us deserves an amazing, fulfilling sex life. Committing to this means advocating for your pleasure. Telling someone what you like and what feels good is sexy! I mean, that’s like 80% of dirty talk. When asking a partner to do something differently, maybe start by telling them the things what they do that you do like. Then bring what you’d like for them to do additionally or differently. If they’re not receptive, it’s worth re-examining where y’all stand. Granted, not everyone is into everything, but at the very least, they should be willing to hear you out.
What are the ways someone can acquire an STD such as oral, vaginal, and anal sex and are there other ways that are less common/known? To contract most STIs you need to engage in some form of sexual activity. As you’ve mentioned, that could be oral or penetrative vaginal/anal sex. However, there are a few exceptions. For example, you can contract herpes from touching an active herpes sore. And HIV can be contracted through an exchange of blood,

so using IV drugs and sharing a needle with an HIV positive person puts you at risk. In the same vein, an HIV positive mother can also pass along the virus to her child during the birthing process (think: there’s a lot of blood), but measures can be taken to avoid this if the doctors know the mother is HIV positive beforehand. What recommendations do you have to practice safe sex & healthy practices within uncommitted relationships considering our generation seems to be anti-monogamy? When engaging in casual sex with multiple partners always use a condom! According to CDC, STI rates were at an all time high in 2017 — particularly chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Ideally, individuals engaging in hookup culture should be getting tested every 3 months. Playing safe shouldn’t be at taboo; you can schedule regular STI screenings with yours friends, and make a date of it after! Build a healthy routine.
manipulative relationship is when your partner continually invalidates and disregards your feelings. Partners in a relationship can experience abuse such as: Physical abuse Sexual abuse - forced sexual intercourse or non consensual advancements Mental (Emotional) abuse - insults, intimidation, humiliation, or threats Controlling Behavior - monitoring, isolation, or restriction of access to finances or self-empowerment However, these forms of abuse are not limited to what it listed above.
STD & STI prevention methods include condoms, female condoms, HPV vaccine, and sex education. Testing for STDs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, involves taking a urine sample. Contrarily, HIV testing can either involve a quick mouth swab or a blood draw.
What are common forms of abuse a relationship can experience that most people wouldn’t immediately think of such as physical or mental abuse? Relationship abuse can take many forms: verbal, emotional/psychological… physical violence is not the only sign that you’re in a toxic relationship. How this abuse is defined and manifests is circumstantial, but suffice it to say that if a partner is seriously harming your mental or physical health, you should re-evaluate the relationship. There’s ample amount of information online about different types of interpartner abuse and the forms it can take. Do your research! A common red flag that you may be in an emotionally
What do you think the first, general step is someone should go about leaving an abusive relationship, realistically? Again, this is circumstantial. If you feel your partner is/ may get violent, tell your friends every time you’re seeing this partner — make sure people know where you are. We suggest consulting professionals at a hotline or facility for regarding steps you should take. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is a 24-hour service and can be reached at 1-800799-7233. What message do you have for internet trolls who body shame other people online for posting their semi-nude/nude body? What about your sexuality terrifies you so much that you have to put others down for expressing theirs how they want?

Social media can be intimidating and I think internet trolls let this get the best of them. Love and compassion are important concepts to keep in mind when participating in social media and in simple, everyday life. Always consider the feelings of someone else. The golden rule is the golden rule. Considering the political divide within the country right now, is it affecting personal relationships as well? And if so, how can people work to eliminate political disagreement within their relationship? A really tough question! Well, sex is inherently political — our work at KAAST has taught us that much. You can’t separate your identity from how you fuck. Your upbringing and socialization affects how you behave in the bedroom, and what’s going on in the news will someway or another creep into your relationships — because this is our reality. I think every healthy and fulfilling relationship needs intellectual stimulation. Discussing politics is something you should be doing with your partner, because being disinterested in politics is a privileged standpoint.
PINK MATTER - FRANK OCEAN
This may be a controversial answer, but I don’t think the goal should be eliminating political disagreement. Intellectual stimulation is vital for every healthy and fulfilling relationship. Plus, political beliefs are indicative of someone’s character and how they view the world. You should engage in political dialogue with your partners — because don’t you want to know who you’re having sex with? Agreed! Opening up disagreements for conversation can potentially build patience within the relationship through discussing issues and reaching mutual resolutions. Mutual communication and honesty are keys in a strong relationship.

FESTIVAL FASHION
Music or Music or Music or Music Fashion Fashion Fashion Fashion Rachel Pator It’s festival season and we all know what that means! Purchasing tickets to Rolling Loud, renting an Airbnb, hitting up the mall and spending hundreds of dollars on – what could be the best experience of your life. There are many music festivals that occur throughout the year like, Ultra, Sunset, Tortuga, and of course EDC, which was originally an underground event that took place in a warehouse in Los Angeles and is now one of the biggest music festivals in the US. Not only do people come to music festivals for the music but for the fashion. Fashion and music festivals have gone hand in hand for many years and music festivals are a great way to leave a major fashion statement and pave the way for new ideas, behaviors, and styles. Packing for a music festival is one of the most important and stressful things to do when even mentioning festivals. So many things to remember to bring! Don’t forget about the bandanas, the glitter, the fringe, the swim-wear, and of course the fishnet tights… all essentials you need to have for an awesome festival outfit. The fashion is just as important as the music now it seems, that’s why popular fashion brands are jumping on the bandwagon and coming out with their own lines of “festive wear.” Festival season is a huge opportunity for brands to spread their trademark and make bank. Additionally, the internet has changed how people interpret different styles and get inspiration. Shout out to Instagram and Pinterest for helping me pick an outfit to wear to Rolling Loud this Spring. Over the years, music festival culture has shaped fashion trends. Nowadays, festivals bring a mix of styles and we live in a time where people
can dress how they want. You may ask what inspired all these different styles? Hippie, new wave, punk among many others. In the 60’s “hippie” was a trend in festivals and in everyday life. It wasn’t just fashion, but it was a way of living. Flower crowns, fringes, and maxi skirts were a symbol of freedom and rebellion. Hippies wanted to look to nature, so they chose the Indians as style icons. We all have at least one hippie piece of clothing or accessory in our wardrobe whether it’s bell bottom jeans, maxi skirts, floral prints or pop art, clout goggles, tie dye shirts and the list goes on. The hippie clothing style has paved the way to the resurgence of the “boho” style which has all the traits of hippie apparel. The new wave aesthetic was colorful and fluorescent. The important thing was to play with the shades and the materials of the clothes and accessories. Michael Jackson and Madonna are two huge icons of this decade. The 1980s were marked by exaggeration, flashiness, lavishness, and power. Fanny packs, slogan t-shirts and mini skirts are some of the characteristics that are still used today in festival clothing along with everyday wear. Other trends like the shoulder pads and the spandex have thankfully disappeared. The 90’s gave us a little more edge with the grunge look. Florals and slip dresses were balanced when you paired it with footwear like combat boots and sneakers. Flannel shirts, frayed denim, overalls, scrunchies, fitted tees, and crops, chokers and neckties are what made the 90’s. A lot of 90s apparel has been coming back in the last years like animal backpacks, bandanas, cargo pants, denim jackets. Today, festival clothing can be whatever you want it to be. It’s a mixture of styles where anything goes. The possibilities are ultimately endless! SWATCH MUSIC PLAYER

SELF CARE - MAC MILLER
SWATCH /culture Their music and their legacy lives on in viral covers to their top hits circulating youtube, words from colleagues and collaborators, and billions of fans across the world. Their talent is unprecedented and the impact they had on pop culture and music will never be forgotten. The following artists lives will be glamorized and talked about forever, yet they were riddled with turmoil, acts of recklessness, rampant drug use and windows of darkness scattered throughout their entire life. Chris Cornell, Lil Peep, Whitney Houston, Kurt Cobain, Chester Bennington, Avicci, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Tom Petty and Mac Miller are just a handful of the hundreds of artists our society has lost to overdose and suicide. In the wake of these tragic and premature deaths, it is incredibly important that artists speak out about the epidemic of mental health dangers in the music industry and prioritize their health over their success. Many artists have already taken it upon themselves to either highlight the issue of mental health for artists and fans alike by openly discussing their struggles or providing resources for those that do suffer. Whether these resources be organizations already in place that they advocate for or new songs intended to address the problem, the time has come for artists to speak out and sing out against mental health problems. 40 million adults in the US suffer from anxiety every year. 6.8 million are diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, 6 million with Panic Disorder, 15 million with social anxiety, 7.7 million with post traumatic stress disorder and millions more with other diagnosable diseases according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. With the amount of pressure and stress put on to artists, there is no surprise that they are affected as well. In the pop industry, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Kanye West, Khalid, Lady Gaga, Kesha, Kid Cudi and Selena Gomez are just some of the artists who have all taken their personal experiences and made platforms of support for their fans. Lovato has long been open about her mental health and her battles. In 2011 she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after a long slew of darkness with depression, eating disorders and anxiety. Since, she has been a public figure for those suffering. In hopes to make these topics
easier to talk about and less stigmatized, Lovato is a part of Be Vocal, an advocacy network for mental health problems. She has appeared in documentaries, series, interviews and reports for her bravery and openness. In the summer of 2018, Lovato checked back into rehab. The saturation of drug and alcohol use is not uncommon in the music industry, but the threat of overdose follows artists like a ghost of hall-of-famers past. As nights turn into days turn back into nights of partying, her body began to shut down to hide from it all. An advocate can still suffer. Her songs Skyscraper, Sober, and Warrior all document her personal struggles and are praised for their relatable value for fans. Grande has openly discussed her struggles with anxiety, PTSD and from her new album Thank U, Next, she has began to open up more about stuffles with depression. Grande’s life in the spotlight started with her musical debut in 13, followed by a long-run on two different Nickelodeon sitcoms but truly transformed when she broke away from the television and fully embraced music. At the age of 20 she put out her first album, Yours Truly and as of January has released five albums each detailing a different and very distinct period of her life. With all of this, she has endured some of the most unimaginable events to happen to the music industry. A terrorist attack at her Manchester concert in 2017 that resulted in the death of 22 people, the shocking and untimely death of long-time boyfriend Mac Miller, and a heavily talked about relationship-turned-engagement-turned-breakup with Pete Davidson. She wears the weight of all of these tragedies like a heavy backpack every day. After praise of the album’s namesake hit single, Grande took to twitter to emphasize the importance in being shameless with mental health and seeking help when needed. She tweeted “therapy has saved my life so many times. If you’re afraid to ask for help, don’t be. U don’t have to be in constant pain & u can process trauma. I’ve got a lot of work to do but it’s a start to even be aware that it’s possible”. Since, she has appeared in interviews and talk shows and used her own social media platforms to bring light to the importance of getting help if you need it and encouraging people to push through their darkest times. By Courtney Cotterill I know what it’s like to feel lonely. I know what it’s like to feel unloved. I know what it’s like to feel like the world might be off a whole lot better off without you. I’ve hit rock bottom like you may not believe due to negligence of my own mental health. And many of you I’m sure have been there with me and felt like life at times just wasn’t worth doing. Most people find it hard to believe me when I say this. As someone who is a magazine editor, student and juggles many jobs it’s easy to believe that I’ve got just about everything figured out. Social media helps us to project that image, we’re in control of exactly what we post and when. But as someone who has struggled with self-love and confidence as a result of an ‘unfortunate series of events’ I know full well how all consuming these emotions can be. Through education and practice I have at last learnt how to truly emulate the fierce determination and confidence that I portray in front of the camera behind it. It certainly wasn’t always that way, and in learning how to shift my image of myself and prioritize my mental health I realized that we’re our own greatest critics. Mental health is something to be taken very seriously and a topic that needs to be discussed as openly as is physical

health. It saddens me that suicide rates in the U.S are at its highest in half a century according to CDC data. As I have struggled with anxiety and self love I began to shift my focus to education so that I could help others as I began to reap the rewards of the changes in behavior and mindset. With the help of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) and hypnotherapy I’ve truly learnt the power of the unconscious mind and what it is capable of when we begin to shift its focus. I was convinced that due to the anxiety and depression I struggled with that I was in need of medication. This is not to say that everyone is the same, I acknowledge that many individuals are in need of prescriptions due to the nature of their conditions. However many of us look to that as a quick fix when it fact it should be a last resort. There is nothing more powerful than the human mind and the first step toward improving your mental and physical state is evaluating your current behaviors or habits… and then changing them. A significant step too is finding gratitude for all that you have rather than focusing on what’s missing in your life. In lieu of that idea I wrote the following piece hunched over at my keyboard one sleepless night at 2am that I hope will give you some food for thought…
And so I ask myself what the point of all this is. The hurt, the pain, the past as it torments me. But I will never stop loving because no purpose is greater than to love. And to neglect that is an abomination committed by a corrupt society that buys into materialism and fame... fleeting. ‘Things’ crafted to make us feel some kind of temporary fulfillment because we’re convinced that love isn’t enough. We’re fearful that it is. Because isn’t that what being human truly is? To love and be loved unconditionally for all that we are and may share. To do what you love, to be what you love, to see what you love, to go where you love, to love whom you want to. And when for whatever reason we tell ourselves we’re incapable of these we resort to temporary solutions. We are brainwashed into believing that what we have isn’t enough and that who we are isn’t enough because social media begs the questions; Are you really satisfied right now? Aren’t you missing out on THIS? Wouldn’t you love to look like THAT and think like her or feel like him? So you swig down another bottle of
bottom shelf tequila, spend the earnings of another nine to five at the mall for a few moments of joy until you’ve nothing but possessions and clutter that insists we have more because enough is never enough. And it never will be. Monday comes, we dread its arrival until the next Friday rolls around... I may be young and you may think me naive but what I can promise you is that the universe is within each of us. All power, strength, love, beauty, hope you desire you already have and not because you don’t know it or doubt it but rather your circumstances taught you otherwise; when that girl in fifth grade tormented you, when your professor said your work would never be published, when your ex violently verbally abused you drunk at a bar, when a stranger attempted to take advantage of you and someone you trusted slipped something in your drink... How much am I forgetting? A lot, I know. But do not let the world beat you down, I swear it’ll put up a good fight at times but yours will always prevail if you love as hard as gravity defies.

VOICE On the first day of her final semester on earth, the professor asked us, “Where are you coming from, and where are you going?”. Students gazed through drowsy eyes held open by first day jitters and spouted jokes like, “I am coming from my bed, and I am going to my bed.” The room was filled with stifled laughs and subtle smiles, English students glanced at each other wondering who will be the outspoken one, who will be the savant, and who will be the one to survive the semester without speaking a word. The wave of ice breakers made its way across the room and landed on a blushed face with shiny golden hair. Maura spoke with a confidence that had become so familiar to me, planting blossoms with each word. She said, “I am coming from a summer abroad in Germany, and I am going back to Germany, hopefully for the rest of my life.” How could we warn her that she would never make her way back in this life?
November 3rd, 2018 was for many of us the darkest day yet. Maura Binkley had cast a net so wide that a stillness fell over Tallahassee that night. The ache was palpable; it felt as if even the trees were wilting in pain. That night feels hazy to me now, with only RAINBOW - KACEY MUSGRAVES
the sharpest memories lasting. We made two calls to the hospital before we got the news. We pleaded with the nurses to check again, spelling and re-spelling her name, only to hear “there is no one here by that name.” We didn’t know what that meant, the fact that she had already left us was an echo so soft in the room, so impossible to conceive, and so easy to push away. I don’t think any of us slept that night, and the days that followed seemed blacker than the last, with even the sun mourning in retreat. The sun came up on Sunday. We gathered on Langford Green to cry together and hear her name. The tears came, but so did something else - a sense of community. We stood together as sisters and friends, holding each other and standing behind her family, creating a barrier between their pain and the world beyond. It wasn’t until we turned around that we could fall. We thought we were the wall, but behind us stood a stronger one. Langford Green was filled with thousands of students behind us, holding candles to the sky. Strangers held each other, friends who had become estranged wiped each other’s tears.
Four thousand people were there that day, but it wasn’t enough to fill the loss of two. In 2017, nearly 40,000 people lost their lives to the epidemic of senseless gun violence, the most devastating number in fifty years. In 2018, 113 people were slain in school and campus shootings. In 2019, more students will head to college than ever before without the assurance of safety and security. More parents will drop their children off at their dorms, praying to God that they will see each other again. There are places in this world that are meant to feel safe, places like classrooms, school hallways, churches, and yoga studios. Time and time again, parents have buried their young, foregoing the privilege of an open casket, instead hiding the gruesome violence which brought them here. Maura Binkley was a leader. She served as Vice President of Chapter Development for Delta Delta Delta at FSU, she double majored in German and Editing, Writing, and Media. She dreamt of dedicating her life to others and working with Teach for America. Maura was an advocate for social change and human rights. The night before what would have been her 22nd birthday, the south was ravaged by thunderstorms and tornados. The city of Tallahassee huddled under pounding rain and violent winds, as if the sky was lashing out in anger. We were angry too, but when the morning came, Maura’s family and friends gathered at the capitol building to incite change. On March 4, 2019, Maura’s Voice launched, a foundation advocating for global social change and positivity. The soul of Maura’s Voice was planted in Maura’s heart before the events of November 2nd. The foundation focuses on the poisonous intersectionality between hate, mental illness, and gun violence. In March, Maura’s Voice reached out to
legislators across the country in an effort to develop policy proposals that advocate for gun safety. The goals of the foundation are simple: “Ideas before ideology, research before rhetoric, policy before politics.” There were days that Maura and I didn’t speak to each other or greet each other with a smile and a hug. There were days that we didn’t sit beside each other-blame it on exhaustion or the assumption that we could tomorrow. There were days that I didn’t tell her everything she meant to me, days that I didn’t tell her the ways she shaped my college experience. There were days that I didn’t tell her how deeply she would be missed and how loved she was. These are the days that I regret, the days that engulfed my mind when we heard the news that night. But still, there are days when the sun shines so bright over campus that we can’t deny her presence. There are days when the air is so crisp and sweet that we can see her hair in the wind. There are days when strangers smile at each other on campus and we feel her presence. Maura Binkley was the definition of kindness, and kind alike to all. Maura is behind every sunny day, every blooming flower, every fit of laughter, every sense of uncontainable joy. It is for Maura that I will never miss an opportunity to be kind. It is for Maura that I will reach for opportunities that feel impossible. It is for Maura that I will embrace the people around me. It is for Maura that we all will live.

LOVE IT IF WE MADE IT - THE 1975
Stop and think about how lucky you are in this very moment to be experiencing what you are experiencing. You are alive and what so many of us forget is how fast that can be taken away. Life is so great that we only get a tiny moment to enjoy everything we see. And that moment is right now. That moment is counting down, and always fleeting. I often get overwhelmed with this notion of just how lucky I am. Why am I allowed to wake up every morning and tell my family and friends that I love them when so many others are not able to anymore? The last few months of 2018 felt bloody and filled with tragedy with each news headline sinking my heart a little deeper as more and more people’s lives were taken without cause. My heart finally broke with the passing of my sorority sister, Maura Binkley who lost her life due to a shooting in a local hot yoga studio last November. Although Maura’s story may seem far away to some, I am here to tell you it is not. As I’ve learned, it can happen to anyone anywhere. Maura Binkley had the potential to change the world, and she was taken by a random act of violence, which could have easily taken you or me. I struggled to fathom this had happened to someone I admired in a place I thought was safe. In the weeks that followed, I watched my friends grieve and struggle to make sense of their own emotions, and I quickly realized how easy it is to accept our bodies natural, short-term response to grief. You stop sleeping or forget to eat proper meals and in doing so inevitably make yourself sick. After talking to my peers, the notion of “self-care” often turned into this structured routine of doing yoga for two hours a day, drinking only decaf hot tea, and eating a lot of raw leafy greens, which can become quite stressful all on its own, but it does not have to be this way. I think it is important to talk about these negative emotions and the traditions we inherit and invent as we struggle to cope. I know that each person grapples with death and grief in their own, unique way because everyone has an individual experience. But I find beauty in being able to bond over something so difficult with the chance of someone feeling a little less alone. As I am still struggling to make sense of my own emotions I have found a healing power in something that felt much simpler than I thought I should share. Music.
Let’s start with the facts. Music has been around since the beginning. Prehistoric men, ancient Egyptians, and Greek physicians all used music as a way to shape physical and mental health. It is clear that throughout history music has had an undeniable influencing factor in humanity’s wellbeing. We know that science supports the fact that music influences our biology, but what is that feeling you get when you are driving in your car, and that song comes on. You know exactly the one I am talking about. You are suddenly drowning in an inescapable, and an intense sense of nostalgia. Whether it was the favorite song of someone you miss or the song the reminds you of your sixteen-year-old self. Music is a magical carrier of memories that can mysteriously put everything back into perspective. Although experts would disagree with my word “magical”, I like magic because it truly sometimes feels that way. I struggled to write this article because the power of music felt indescribable. I felt stuck several times because the language we use to communicate is exact and specific, but music shows us that it is possible to be descriptive and reach people in ways that language cannot. I mean, there is a reason why great movies have great soundtracks, they are there to intensify the emotions portrayed on screen. Whether you are sitting on the edge of your seat in a horror movie or crying during a romance, music dramatically impacts any scene. Music helps fill in the gaps where words don’t seem to do enough. For instance, if you were asked to describe a color to a blind person... how would you do it? I would ask to play them a song. Blue would be I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston, Yellow would be My Girl by The Temptations, and Pink is Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper. Music transcends rhetoric and gives us more options which allow us to keep moving. Music, like life, is intensely social. It requires an audience, even if that audience is just one person, which should remind each of us that listening is more important than you might think. People listen to music when they are upset and want to be uplifted or when they have a desire to feel understood. I now challenge you to think about how music might have healed you, and I encourage you to share it with someone you feel needs to be heard. “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” - Plato

ARIANA
GRANDE: THANK U, NEXT - ARIANA GRANDE
By Cassidy Plank Queen of pop and impactful influencer, Ariana Grande, has become a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. Breaking records and topping the charts her hit singles continue to exceed fans expectations. Her latest releases “thank u next” and “7 rings” have both already hit no.1 on Billboard’s top 100 charts, which comes as no surprise seeing as she was announced as their Woman of the Year for 2018. Her powerful range and personality make her impossible to look over in both the music and social media worlds. But her music isn’t the only thing catching our attention; we are obsessing over her iconic looks and her refreshingly honest tweets. Grande keeps her fans guessing with her bold and ever changing looks (minus her signature high pony). But what really sets her apart from other pop stars is her ability to be unapologetically herself. A key influencer on media platforms, her tweets about women’s empowerment have really resonated with follower’s especially young women. In a recent tweet joined by Miley Cyrus, she states that “it’s time for the girls to shine” regarding their song releases. She is a firm believer that women can do the same things male artists can and that is the message she weaves into her music. As time has gone by we have seen more and more of Grande’s personality and soul pour into her albums. And she does not shy away from letting the world know that she can’t be defined by her relationships and neither should any woman. This is highlighted in her song “thank u next”, where she instead finds a relationship with herself. Ariana believes women can be many things at once, not just one label, and she is living proof of that. Her music is fun, flirty and powerful at the same time. Her words ring true for many listeners and the energy in her songs is contagious. In her latest release “7 rings” we see a more carefree side of her. She sings about having fun with her girlfriends and letting loose with retail therapy. Her life hasn’t been all champagne and world tours however. Having her life in the spotlight comes with hardships and Ariana has faced her fair share of them. The past couple years she has faced a concert bombing, the heartbreaking death of her first love Mac Miller and a split with her former fiancé Pete Davidson. These events have caused a lot of controversy and pain for the artist and her fans. Through her healing process she has stayed true to herself, letting fans in on her honest thoughts. Using her twitter as a safe haven she began talking to her followers about her pain and anxiety and reaching out to them personally. Her heartfelt tributes to Mac Miller in the past couple months has shown us a different side to Ariana, as she tried to heal and pay her respects to her first love. Breaking so many hearts when he passed this past year, her music stands as a tribute to leaving his mark in the music industry. As for Ariana, it hasn’t been easy but as a result her music came out stronger and more soulful than ever with her latest album release “sweeter”. We have only seen the beginning of what this girl can do.

How to
1 Working Start
with
Modeling Agencies as a
Photographer By Ashley Mulaik
Many photographers dream of photographing agency signed models for fun, work, or magazines. Unfortunately, you cannot just waltz into an agency and start photographing any model you want whenever you want. The modeling industry is just like most industries wherein there is certain expertise and skill involved.
CONFIDENCE - OCEAN ALLEY
Build a Portfolio
The first step is the most important of all of them. Agents are business people, and they are not going to lend out their models to just anyone. They want to make sure they are getting high quality work with a photographer who knows what they are doing. Building a portfolio may sound intimidating, but it is easier than you think. You do not have to have actual models as your subjects. Instead, invite friends, family, and others to model for you. This will allow you to get experience behind the lens, but also direct posing. The more photoshoots that you do, the more you will progress. Once you’ve felt like you’ve mastered working with friends and family, it’s a good idea to reach out to some people on social media platforms to work with someone you are not familiar with. It does not have to be someone with 10K followers on Instagram. People love having their picture taken, so it’s typically pretty simple to find someone to be your next subject. Once you’ve built enough content up, step one is complete

Find a Platform to Display Your Work
Nothing says “professional” like a nice, clean website or platform that displays beautiful photography. Don’t worry if you do not have the cash to buy a website domain, many websites like Squarespace, Wix, and Wordpress offer free websites. Take the time and effort to arrange your images into a gallery that looks pleasing and organized.
Start Reaching Out to Agencies
The biggest thing to keep in mind here is to start small and work your way up. It is unheard of for a beginner photographer to email Next Model Management or Wilhelmina and instantly get a response wanting to collaborate. The best place to start is a group called “Mother Agencies”. This type of agency works to scout new faces to develop and eventually get them signed to more established big name agencies. Mother agencies are always looking for new photographers due to the amount of new, inexperienced models that they sign. Once you’ve done some research, compose an email to either the head agent, or the agent that is in charge of new faces. Your email should be a short introduction of who you are and where you are located. After the introduction, links to your portfolio should be provided. Close the email out and another great thing to do is attach one image to the email, so that they are forced to see your work whether they want to click on the links or not.
Wait….
This is arguably the hardest part. Some agencies may take weeks to respond, others days. Many may not even respond. Don’t give up, keep reaching out to new people and keep trying. If you’ve reached out to a dozen and not heard anything back for a few weeks, maybe spend some more time on your portfolio. Join some photography Facebook groups and get some critiques on how you can improve. If you work hard and keep trying, someone will see your talent and respond.

Jaden Smith’s MSFTSrep:
Beyoncé’s Ivy Park:
Fashion Nova X Cardi B:
Justin Timberlake & Trace Ayala’s William Rast
We all want to be part of the Smith family, let’s hope that by wearing this line, we’re one step closer. This line is designed to be gender neutral and size neutral, nothing is assumed in this brand. It recognizes everyone is different, and it’s leading the way for everything to change. It consists in neutral colors and modern minimalistic designs. It’s more of a statement of embracing being misfits in a society were rules are strict, it encourages the breaking of every and all rules.
Beyoncé’s idea was to make fierce workout clothes for women to look and feel strong wherever they are. A line for you to be flawless whether you’re lounging or working out.
She’s been praising the web-based brand since she started, but now she really means her famous “I could buy designer, but this Fashion Nova fit,” especially because the brand’s specialty is to make designer lookalike pieces. As soon as a big personality like the Kar-Jenner’s or Cardi herself wear anything designer, Fashion Nova comes out with a similar piece. The most expensive thing can be approximately 100 bucks, but it’s not common, the usual pricing is between 10 to 40 dollars. The pieces on Cardi B’s line are so versatile they can be worn at the office or at the club, which was one of her main goals.
Justin Timberlake and Trace Ayala’s William Rast: The name comes from both of their childhood friends’ grandfathers. The denim focused brand is designed to reflect Timberlake and Ayala’s lifestyle. Tennessee meets Hollywood kind of vibe, grunge meets elegant with a sense of newness and homeliness at the same time.
MONEY - CARDI B
What started as a collaboration is now a whole clothing brand: Yeezy. Adidas is still in charge of the sneakers, but the brand itself sells clothes and shoes other than sneakers. To cop a pair, you need to be very aware of the date and times of release, because the brand plays with scarcity to make the products more desirable, or you can pay a very high resale price. People seem to love these sneakers like Kanye loves Kanye.
Adidas x Kanye West:
Created by Project Runway’s Kevin Christiana under Levine’s guidance and direction. It has Adam’s signatures crew neck t-shirts and stylish jeans for men. Relaxed, casual and perfect for every day. The women’s line is made of simple pieces with rock-star like accents like studs and zippers. This line is for all genders, and it will be loved.
The Adam Levine Collection:
Music and fashion icon Rihanna embarks on her newest venture: lingerie design. Inspired to create a line of intimates that complements a variety of shades and shapes, Savage X Fenty will celebrate fearlessness, confidence, and inclusivity. “The label is braced to disrupt and redefine the marketplace with its accessible price point and extensive assortment.” A lingerie line for you to shine bright every night, encouraging individualism, by having sizes go from extra-small to extra-large. Additionally, they offer a subscription box service… who wouldn’t want lingerie to arrive at their doorstep monthly?
As the brand states: “We’re never afraid to take risks. We trust our instincts to make unexpected choices that push sport forward.” This line is inspired by, and designed for the bold. Yes, another athleisure line because: the heart wants what it wants.

The Return of the Boyband By: Cassidy Plank and Jessica Ralph
Calling all fangirls (and boys): it is finally safe to come out of hiding. Yes, we mean it. Plaster up those posters, practice your “oh my GOD” screech, and find your t-shirts from the early 2000’s. The boy band is back, baby, and this time, they are better than ever. *We do ask—however—that all silly bands, lip smackers, cargos, and Conair hair products be left in taped up boxes in closets* 2019 has been momentous for music but nothing came of more of a surprise than the reformation of the Jonas Brothers. Famed for their Disney Channel days, the brotherly boy band now uses their nostalgic angle to attract the interest of millennials and their new age pop sound to pique the interest of gen z-ers. With two new hits, Sucker and Cool, and speculation of about 30 others in the works, we can all rejoice in the promise of good, quality summer jams. The allure of the boy band is so much more than just their music. The fashion, personalities, culture, and even partnerships make being a part of the hype all the more exciting. Who doesn’t love obsessing over a well-dressed, charmingly handsome trio? Its undeniable. Boy bands got their start in early 1960’s with the Osmands and Jackson 5. Since
SUCKER - JONAS BROTHERS
then, iconic bands have taken the hearts of the youth, including The Beatles, New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC. The reboot of the boy band brought 5 Seconds of Summer, 1 Direction, Big Time Rush and BTS. Their coordinated dance moves and fashion-forward looks have captivated our hearts and wallets. With all the hype and money generated around boy band culture, there is doubt that this trend will continue to recirculate in music. Even after the drop-off of boy bands on 2016, some of our favorites decided to re-launch themselves including the highly anticipated Jonas Brothers. Not only are they able to dominate the charts, but their influence carries over into fashion as well. Band tee’s have become a staple in spring fashion and the androgynous trend of crisp white shirts with leather and denim transcends all seasons. Sneakers and large brimmed hats, statement jackets and chain accessories are showcased on every blogger, in every store, and on every website. All of these looks can be traced back to the fandom of the boy band and the craze coming from their fans. As summer approaches and we brace ourselves for fresh bops, the confidence of the role of the boy band transcends the charts. With their music fresh and fashion forward, we welcome the boy band back into culture with a hug, loud scream, and excited tears.

Whether you prefer to lift weights, run for miles, or practice yoga, music is an essential part of your workout. The right song can change your workout in many positive ways. We all understand the benefits of fitness, and total wellness: improved cardiovascular health, reduced risk of bone degeneration, increased muscle tone and so on. Throughout the fashion industry there is at last an increasing trend towards healthy image, with countries like France introducing new protections for their models. As we as a society begin to be more health conscious and accepting of all body types, there has been a significantly positive change in our global fashion community. With so many options as a result of the internet particularly and its accessibility, the choice of workouts is endless, and the decision to listen to music during our workout is one that many of us make. But is there any real reason as to why we should listen to music during our workout? It would probably not come as a surprise to discover that listening to music does in fact positively influence your workout. Studies show that music has the ability to change your heart rate, reduce stress and fatigue. Music stimulates multiple parts of your brain simultaneously; your frontal, temporal, occipital and parietal lobes are all activated as one. This translates to an elevated mood, and reduction of tension, which may lead to
your workout feeling easier than it is allowing you to push harder, run farther, or workout longer… without realizing it. Are you an avid runner? Runner’s World recently did a poll to find the top running songs among its readers. Unsurprisingly, the top songs included some motivational favorites like Eye of the Tiger, Roar, and Don’t Stop Believin’. In first place, for top running song, is Eminem’s Lose Yourself, followed by Thunderstruck by AC/DC, and Eye of the Tiger. Do you prefer lifting weights? With its requirement of perfect focus, and form, weightlifting places mental strain, as well as physical strain on the body. Sony Music’s list of top ten Pump Up Songs includes favorites like Can’t Feel My Face by The Weekend, Jessie’s Girl by Rick Springfield, and, once again, Eye of the Tiger. Is HIIT what gets you moving? Check out your music apps for some great playlists to support your heart pumping workout. Spotify has pre-made playlists to match your mood, and music preference. From “Way Back Workout” full of your favorite throwbacks to “Nike – High Intensity Training Tracks”, you’re sure to find something to keep you moving. So next time you workout, turn up your music and get going, you may be surprised by what your body can do.

I can barely remember a time before I struggled with acne. I’ve tried practically every product in existence, from drugstore facial scrubs to prescription creams and pills. And none of them worked. My freshman year of college brought the worst bought of acne my reflection had ever seen. I was broken out not only on my face, but also all down my chest, back, and shoulders. I couldn’t even wear tank tops without feeling totally self-conscious, and in the Florida heat it was miserable. My sophomore year, a dermatologist suggested I try Accutane. After six months, many visits to the dermatologist to have blood drawn, and multiple pregnancy tests later, my skin was saved. I came out the other side with minimal scarring and no lasting side effects (that I know of). But while the Accutane cured my chronic cystic acne, my complexion is still far from perfect. In addition to my skin still being an annoying mix of oily and dry, I still experience the occasional breakout and I have some days when I look at my skin and still feel like a pimply teenager. But if the acne experience has taught me anything, it’s how to take care of my skin and which products actually do what they promise. So, without further ado, here are some skincare tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years.
SKIN - MAC MILLER
1. Do unto your neck and chest what you do unto your face.
ALWAYS treat your neck and chest as if they are a part of your face. Especially with moisturizer. Your neck and chest will get wrinkly with age, just like the skin on your face, but you can slow the process down with a little moisturizer every night.
2. Always wear sunscreen.
This is a tip I’m still trying to remember to follow myself, but sunscreen is so important. You risk sun damage every time you set foot in the sun, so always try to put on a little SPF before your makeup. Many makeups and moisturizers include an SPF in them, so if you find one you like, that’s just one less step you have to take. If not, there are many products, like those made by Supergoop, made specifically to have a featherlight feel and go under makeup.
3. Never forget to moisturize. No matter what.
A popular skincare myth is that oily skin doesn’t need to be moisturized. But the opposite is true. While
some people might just have more naturally oily skin, many times oily skin is the product of a lack of moisture. Your oil glands produce more sebum (or oil) when your skin is dehydrated. So, make sure you moisturize, and don’t forget to include your neck and chest!
4. Never use abrasive products on your face.
Facial scrubs and brushes are very popular, but they’re not always a great idea, especially if you have sensitive skin. If you need to exfoliate, which you should typically do once or twice a week, opt for a chemical exfoliator instead, like products with glycolic or lactic acid. My favorite is Mario Badescu’s glycolic acid cleanser. I use it once or twice a week, more often if my skin is broken out, and it works wonders. Especially stay away from facial scrubs with any sort of plastic beads in them. Not only are they bad for your skin, but they’re also terrible for the environment, as those little plastic pieces typically end up in our oceans and landfills.
5. Stick with a routine that works for your skin.
We live in a culture that craves instant gratification. But we can’t get that with our skin, no matter how much we try. If you’re trying a new product, give it at least a week before you decide whether to keep it in your routine or not. It may feel like a lifetime waiting to see if it’s working, and you may be tempted to try something else in hopes of quicker results, but it’ll likely be detrimental. Patience is a virtue, and skincare is no exception.

he 2018 Victoria Secret show was one iconic runway show to date. Holding the venue in New York City with more performing artists than ever, created an aesthetic journey into lingerie. Musicians including Leela James, The Chainsmokers, Kelsi Ballerini, Halsey, BebeRexha, Shawn Mendes and Rita Ora all contributed to the Victoria Secret Segments. The show opened with Leela James singing “This is Me” from the famous 2018 musical ‘The Greatest Showman’. The powerful ballad enhanced the empowering black and red lights and the message of acceptance made for a sultry fun opening to the show. The models wore thigh high boots, marching on the dark runway with sexy, deep colored lace. From the powerful ballad from James, the aesthetic of the show changes with the fun beats of “This Feeling” by The Chainsmokers and Kelsi Ballerini. The dark tones transform into golden leaves and sparkly dresses, the ballad turning into a fun EDM/country crossover with the Chainsmokers beats and the youthful twang of Ballerini allowing for the models to dance around in pink pastels. The show continues with rising star Halsey. She sang her number 1 hit “Without Me” that added a chiller vibe to match the dreamy baby blue, pale green, and light pink lingerie. Her song matches the theme of the show of powerful women as Halsey sings ‘you know I’m the one who put you up there.’ The models come out in feathered clothing that also matches Halsey’s white feathered eyebrows. The radio sensation is also the soundtrack to the 2018 Fantasy Bra, worn by Elsa Hosk.
THIS FEELING - THE CHAINSMOKERS
Bebe Rexha contributes to the 2018 Victoria Secret Pink section of the show. Her song, “I’m a Mess” is different from the bubbly pop that one might expect from the Pink section. Instead, beside her hot pink ensemble, the dark stage contrasts the fun and playful vibe of the Pink segment. “I’m a Mess” included an electric guitar solo that showed that fun and playful doesn’t have to be bubbly and young. Shawn Mendes was up next to steal the heart of many young girls. His performance was simpler than the others, with him remaining still during his performance with his voice and his guitar singing “Lost in Japan.” He croons ‘do you got plans tonight?’ as the models enter a floral paradise. Rita Ora created a slower sexier contrast to Mendes’ floral performance. Her song “Let You Love Me” was accompanied with rain and the darker version of the Pink section with sporty looks that included shorts and sports bras from Victoria Secret. Lastly, after shuffling through many genres, from ballad to EDM/country, to pop, it finally shifts to rock. The Struts give a hard performance of “Body Talks” that has an energy even in the slower verses. The hard chorus gives the starry segment an electric energy. The transition between all of the segments demonstrate the importance of music within a show and within our lives. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next annual spectacle Victoria Secret will throw this 2019. By: Kristin Ringuette

COACHELLA
FEELS LIKE SUMMER - CHILDISH GAMBINO
Set in the desert valley among palm trees, carnival rides, and life size art installations, Coachella is the millennial’s dream festival. While some may simply understand it as a 3-day music festival, Coachella has grown to become more than just that. Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is held over the course of two weekends in April, every year in Indio, California near Palm Springs. Coming upon its 20th anniversary, this year’s Coachella lineup is nothing short of entertaining. Coachella is a major success due to the variety in artists that the festival brings in every year. Artists range in genre from pop to EDM to indie rock and everything in between. The 2019 lineup features today’s biggest artists such as Childish Gambino, Diplo, Bassnectar, and Ariana Grande. The lineup also features newcomers such as Bazzi and BLACKPINK, the first K-Pop girl group to grace the stage at Coachella. While the music was the initial appeal to the original festival goers, Coachella has now become the Mecca for the perfect Instagram post. Two decades ago, attendees of the music festival may have worn just everyday outfits. But in today’s modern world, it’s now Festival Fashion Week(ends) where Instagram models and average Joes alike strive for the most fashion forward outfits. Coachella is the runway for social media influencers, bloggers, celebrities, and everyday people to show off their creative festival fashion.

Currents by Tame Impala, a mash of ambient sounds and psychedelic melodies perfectly blends with the ethereal voice of Kevin Parker. This album is the perfect embodiment of an Aquarius. They’re radical and challenge the status quo, something Tame Impala captures perfectly.
Rumors by Fleetwood Mac is the perfect album for a Pisces. Known as the “hippie” sign, Pisces are emotional beings. Rumours embodies the spiritual qualities of a Pisces through a mesh of rock and blues paired with effortlessly organic and emotional lyrics. This classic is a great album for a Pisces.
STAR DWELLERS - DREAMERS DELIGHT
Aries are fire signs and known to be confident and optimistic. They’re the life of the party, always looking for a good time, which is why Sia, Diplo, and Labrynth’s upbeat collab album No New Friends is the perfect album for a fiery Aries.
ms&
Zodaic
Generally more level-headed, Taurus’s lean towards a more organic sound. While We Wait by Kehlani, a Taurus herself, is the perfect album for the practical Taurus. The project displays Kehlani’s emotional intelligence and patience in love and relationships, staples of her zodiac.
Signs
Geminis are ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication. Those with this sun sign tend to appreciate rap and R&B, so the brain child of Kanye West (a Gemini himself) and Kid Cudi KIDS SEE GHOSTS is the album for the outgoing Gemini. The artistry in this album is bold and experimental, something an adaptable and easy-going Gemini can get behind.
Paracosm by Washed Out is a creative musical story, something that intuitive and highly imaginative Cancers will love. This album meshes dreamy melodies with an uplifting story told through the lyrics of nine songs, a great listen for this water sign, known for their artistry and deep emotions.

Natural born leaders, Leos are known to be stubborn and dramatic, but these qualities come from a place of strength. Ctrl by SZA can dig into the more passionate parts of a Leo, while still showing their power and “king of the jungle” qualities through songs such as The Weekend and Love Galore.
Admittedly a biased opinion, A$AP Rocky is one of the most intelligent and innovative artists of our time. That being said, his album TESTING deserves its place as Virgos album. Virgos are known for their intelligence and are highly analytical, traits I believe Rocky applied to the creation of this album. It’s practical and there are many small details that bring this album together, qualities that Virgos can definitely appreciate.
SLEEPLESS - FLUME
Libras are the sign of balance, peace, and fairness. I chose ODESZA’s A Moment Apart as the album for Libra’s not only for the overwhelming sense of peace the songs on this album bring, but because of the balance in the sounds of this album. Billboard described A Moment Apart as an album about “growth, maturity, and perspective gained through hard-earned experience.”
Needless to say, Scorpio’s are badasses. They are strong and determined, but have a deep passionate side, making Ariana Grande’s newest album, Thank U, Next a Scorpion anthem. It’s light and fun while the lyrics display Ariana’s new sense of self and her “no bullshit” attitude.
Sagittarius are the travelers of the zodiac. Not only do they travel the world, they travel through minds, ideals, and philosophies. This fire sign searches for freedom, and after hearing I Don’t Want U Back from the BØRNS album Blue Madonna, I knew this was the album for a Sag. This upbeat homage to individuality and freedom through love and heartbreak is the album for the adventurous Sagittarius to listen to on a long drive with the windows down.
Capricorns are all about self control and realism, qualities that emanate off of Rihanna, especially in her album ANTI. In Consideration, she sings “Do things my own way darling. You should just let me, why you will never let me grow?” This line is one for the independent Capricorn to sing to the rooftops.
