SWATCH /letter from the editors
Spring is a season of rebirth and new opportunities. New faces. New experiences. Fresh starts and most importantly, a time of renewal. We came across the word efflorescence and it encompassed everything we had in mind for this issue. As college students, we try to incorporate what is going on around us in Tallahassee and can’t deny the fact that the town itself is blooming. From Collegetown to Gaines Street to Railroad Avenue, this town is expanding and flourishing into a fusion of diversity. With the addition of local restaurants, businesses and festivals, this town has attracted new faces and many opportunities to people from around the country which has allowed us to develop a new perspective for this spring issue.
A massive thank you to our graphic designers, writers and photographers, none of this would have been possible without you. And to all of those who have supported us through this journey, thank you. With one of our editors graduating and embarking on a new journey and the other staying on board for her last year as editor, the issues to come will embody the combination of fresh and established. FINAL WORDS FROM ODRA V. DORANTE
This issue strives to highlight this concept of fresh faces, places and mindsets. Our team has flourished over the years creating a tight-knit group of people working towards the same goal of creating a one-of-a-kind issue this spring.
As one chapter of my life comes to an end and another opens I would like to thank SWATCH for giving me the opportunity to work with them over the years and above all, allowing me to take on the position of Editor-in-Chief during my last year at Florida State. I’m thankful for all of the wonderful connections made, creative minds I was able to collaborate with and the life-long friends I made in the process of doing what I love.
Yours truly, C&O

pring is defined by new beginnings. The whole world experiences universal change. It is the perfect season to explore one’s personal evolution. Probing new facets of one’s identity is empowering and the ideal start to a new year. There is nothing more personal to a woman than the fragrance she wears. It is the finishing touch to any outfit. An accessory she carries with her wherever she goes. It is how she is identified by some and remembered by others. For years, perfume has been a sensory way in which women have been able to express themselves. When selecting one’s signature scent, there are a few things to keep in mind. A perfume should reflect the personality of its wearer. Each fragrance will smell unique on the individual wearing it. It is very important when selecting a perfume to remember that the scent will be altered once it mixes with the body’s chemistry and to test it before making a final decision. Next, one’s perfume should be versatile – able to be worn day and night, to all types of functions. Finally, it should have the ability to empower its wearer each time she smells it.
Wonderlust: Michael Kors $66 – 112
This perfume smells like a warm sunset on a tropical beach. It is sure to evoke feelings of wonderlust in everyone who smells it.
Sun: Giorgio Armani $50 – 72
The name of this perfume says it all. Sunshine in a bottle - this floral scent is perfect for spring and summer. Hints of jasmine add distinction to this fragrance, making it a unique choice.
Daisy: Marc Jacobs $84 - 102
This flirty scent is perfect for everyday wear. Sweet, floral tones make it suitable for gals willing to laugh at life.
18
Light Blue: Dolce & Gabbana $58 - 134
Sharp, citrus notes in this fragrance are reminiscent of days spent on the beach. It is light and perfect for everyday use while deeper tones hint at summer nights.
Miss Dior: Absolutely Blooming Dior $75 - 130
“What Would You Do for Love?” The tagline of this fragrance invites its wearer to be ready for adventure at a moment’s notice. Sweet and musky, this perfume is for women willing to embrace their sultry side.
Roses De Chloe: Chloe $70-125
A quintessential scent for Valentine’s (or Galentine’s) Day, this perfume resembles the smell of rosè. Even its romantic packaging makes it hard to resist.
Bamboo: Gucci $72 – 117
My personal favorite – notes of sandalwood and vanilla speak of days spent in the sun. Perfect for everyday use, this fragrance is both girly and sultry all in one.

e’ve seen Ireland native Saiorse Ronan on our screen for years, in pictures like The Lovely Bones, Atonement, and Brooklyn. In the past year her status as a rising young actress has transformed before our eyes into a household name. Her performance in Ladybird turned heads immediately upon inception and remained a striking performance in a stacked category. Later this year Ronan will team up Robbie in the powerhouse film Mary Queen of Scots, in which she will play Mary Stuart. If we’re making early bets, 21 these two will reign over the award circuit two years in a row.

Rejuvinates and nourishes skin The season of maxi dresses, freshly painted mani-pedis, and trips to tropical destinations is quickly approaching and the last thing anyone wants to worry about is their skin. We are always on the lookout for products that will help us achieve our dream of having perfect skin and rose water happens to be the best kept skincare secret that’ll help us. Coined “beauty’s magic potion,” rose water is essentially water that has been infused with rose petals and is beneficial for both your skin and hair. In fact, it is believed that Queen Cleopatra implemented rose water into her skincare regimen which goes to show you just how long rose water has been around.
On skin, rose water is beneficial for quite a few reasons. It aids in maintaining your skin’s pH balance while its anti-inflammatory properties work to reduce redness, blemishes, as well as eczema. It will leave your skin looking refreshed thanks to its ability to rejuvenate and nourish. Rose water also has the ability to help heal scars and makes for à good toner since it helps clean out impurities lurking in your pores. For this reason I recommend the Mario Badescu Facial Spray but if you aren’t looking to splurge on skincare just follow the DIY recipe below. The best part is that if you suffer from under eye puffiness, you can use rose water to kiss those tired eyes goodbye.
D.I.Y- Rose Water Toner • ¼ cup of rose water • ¼ cup of witch hazel • À few drops of lavender oil In à small bowl, use a whisk to mix the ingredients together. When you are positive that everything has been mixed well, transfer the mixture into a spray bottle. After you have washed your face, spritz the toner on your face and wipe your face with a cotton pad. 28

sugar
Exfoliates and hydrates
For so long, we have all at some point in our lives heard that sugar is the devil. We have been taught that sugar does not contain any essential nutrients, it is the leading cause of obesity, and it can do some serious damage to your teeth. Now, while this may be true, sugar can actually do wonders to you skin and with summer right around the corner, who would not want great skin? Sugar is known to be a natural humectant. This simply means that it attracts moisture from the air and uses that to hydrate your skin. Sugar is made up of very small, fine particles which is one of the reasons why it makes for a great exfoliant. There are currently a lot of body scrubs out on the market and the one thing that many of them have in common is that their key ingredient is brown sugar. Brown sugar is the most popular sugar used because it is the softest. Raw sugar is much coarser and granulated sugar is nowhere near as soft. Brown sugar is used to reveal fresh, healthy looking skin by exfoliating dead skin cells. Exfoliating should be done no more than twice a week because the last thing anyone would want is for their skin to be irritated. Sugar scrubs are gentle enough to use on your body and more sensitive areas like the face, so, those with sensitive skin are in luck. Once you have created your own scrub and have tried it for yourself, you will become addicted. Sugar may be bad for your health but it sure is great for your skin.
DIY Sugar Scrub • 1 tbsp of brown sugar • 1 tbsp of honey In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and honey. After washing your face, use your fingers to apply the mixture onto the damp face and massage gently in a circular motion. Once you are certain that you have exfoliated your entire face, rinse the scrub off, dry your face, and voilà you are well on your way to healthy, glowy skin. 29 29

Hair Hacks for Florida Heat
Don’t you just miss those summer days
when you wake up to hear the buzzing of the suns lustrous rays and when you step outside to feel the warmth of the sun as it lies on you like second skin. Well, your hair doesn’t. Too much sun exposure can result in more damage than you think. It is not common but crucial that if you live in the sunshine state to cater to your hair the same way you do your skin. UVA and UVB rays can damage the outside cover of the hair strands. Luckily there’s no need to worry because I have the solution for the most effective hair hacks for the Florida heat.
Up-do’s have made a comeback this
spring so why not prolong this trend to a time we really need it, summer. Not only is the weather sweltering hot but also extremely muggy. I love the outdoors but let me tell y’all I hate sticky hair all over my neck. You don’t have to give up your role as a slave to fashion just for an up-do. Here are a few examples of easy and fun up-do’s you can rock this summer.
If you have experienced the Florida heat
you know exactly the type of torture it does to frizzy hair. Don’t even bother bringing out the flat iron because the second you step into the wrath of the Florida Sun, poof, just like that. A quick trick I have used in the past is using the cold hair setting on your blow dryer to defuse frizz.
The beachy wave trend is a statement look for the summer time. My favorite beachy wave product is Moroccanoil Beach Wave Mousse.
42
Moisturizing your hair is just as
important as moisturizing your face. You don’t want dry or brittle hair. You want that bright and luminescent glow! A great product to use is coconut oil in your hair to defuse the frizz and keep it hydrated. If you are looking for a new product to keep your hair healthy without weighing it down, check out Verb Ghost Oil. Not only is it weightless but it’s paraben, gluten and cruelty free!
Lastly, hats are one of my favorite
accessories. It is a perfect way to protect your skin and hair from the harsh sun while maintaining just the right amount of style. Here are some of my favorite hat trends for the summer and where to find them.
Now is the time to be armed and
ready against the harsh heat, chlorine and seawater that will no doubt have your hair screaming for some R&R. I hope these quick tricks inspire you to give your hair what it needs to brace the summer and look good doing it.

Y
oga has been around since the earliest forms were depicted in 3000 BCE, and it has been growing and adapting ever since. So what is yoga, anyway? Instagram has done wonders of allowing experienced yogis all over the world to document their own practices, but often it looks too complicated for an inexperienced yogi. Crazy ways to contort your body; balancing on your head, turning into a scorpion, and even forming into a wheel; all things you probably think you can never do, but as JB says, never say never. While these perfect ideals can be discouraging to a novice, don’t turn away from it just yet. Yoga has amazing benefits to the mind and body, and it can even benefit you in your social life. It all starts with a breath.
Just Breathe. Match your inhale length to your exhale length and focus on it (repeat as often as necessary). This technique for connecting your breath to your mind is a great way to connect to you, your own head and thoughts. Being healthy in your mind can translate to being healthy physically, and by breathing with rhythm you can get “inside” your own head. Meditation. Sound familiar? Many people I know are turned off as soon as they hear the word. “I can’t just sit around and not think, meditation does not work for me!” or the fan favorite “I don’t have the time!”. But meditation through breathing techniques are a great way to escape the chaotic world going on around you; it allows you to reconnect and ground yourself. Meditation doesn’t have to be a torture task, it can be as easy as five minutes of concentrated breathing for amazing results. Think about life; there is a lot to think about. A big date, exam, game or job interview can easily allow us to start stressing. Positive thinking and positive envisioning during meditation actually works to reduce stress and anxiety. That’s fact. While meditation in yoga is helping your mind settle, yoga is also a great way for an increase in your physical health.
44
There are over 100 different types of yoga, meaning there is something for everyone, just as every pose has a variation for levels of different experience too. Whether you’re a self proclaimed couch potato or an elite athlete, there is a type of yoga in
existence for you. Hatha Yoga is great for a gentler routine, it comprises of less intense forms that will focus on stretching and improved strength, relaxation, flexibility and balance. For more intense forms of yoga, try Ashtanga Yoga. This type aims to improve cardiovascular wellbeing, muscle definition and fat loss. Both types offer incredible full body benefits, such as a lower blood pressure, reduction in insomnia, chronic pain and arthritis. Yoga also helps bring a sense of social belonging! The yoga community is international, and everyone is welcome. Alo Yoga is an amazing clothing brand for yoga, but they provide so much more than the coolest new look. They not only have a studio with instructors for in their in-person classes, they also offer online classes for free! “Spreading mindful movement, inspiring wellness and creating a community, these goals inspire everything we do at Alo”. From studio to street, they mean that in both their clothing and what you’ve learned in yoga. Taking the mindfulness from your mat to your daily life. Not only are there incredible opportunities to learn online via step by step tutorials and Instagram yogis sharing their own practices and tips for help, but there are so many opportunities right outside your door. In our very own Tallahassee local community there are over 20 individual yoga studios, along with the FSU yoga club offering some free yoga classes on Landis Green every now and then, and free FSU yoga classes by group fitness. Yoga is accessible to all: younger or older/active or not. It offers a variety of ways to improve your physical and mental health, and invites people who practice belonging in a community of like-minded individuals all joining together for the practice.
And it begins with a breath. Alexis Paul

In today’s society we are so invested in others scripts that we tend to forget we can write our very own script. We have the capability to be everything we have ever dreamed of plus more yet we somehow still get stuck at this halt. The big question is why are we investing time and energy into things that don’t help us reach for the higher stars in our lives? Is it because we settle for the path that is already pathed, or we simply conform to what we think we are worthy of? The simple answer to this is that we are lacking confidence in ourselves which is the key factor to unlocking our ultimate potential. The moment you decide that you’re worthy and make yourself a priority is the moment you create a trail blazed path for yourself that is unstoppable. It is essential that you own everything about yourself whether you love those parts or not. You will learn to embrace and LOVE all of you. Growing up I struggled deeply with my confidence and my self-worth. I identified myself by the things that occurred in my life that translated to a negative ideology of who I was. I had all of these toxic thoughts about my body, self and overall image embedded into me soul. Two years ago, I woke up and decided I am no longer going to permit myself to feel this way and instead I am going to love every part of myself and to be everything I have ever dreamed off. It was life-altering. And ultimately it comes down to the mindset you have. It is vital for you to change the way you think into a positive, nurturing and selfaware mindset. You have to understand that if you don’t love yourself you’re cutting yourself short in all aspects of your life. You have the world in the palm of your hands because you know who you are, your worth and you demand only greatness for yourself. You can achieve anything in life as long as you allow yourself to be the best version of you. It’s not easy to learn how to love yourself and it’s not something that just happens overnight, but once you achieve selflife you’re set up with all of the tools you need to achieve everything you set your mind to. Nobody is perfect nor will there ever be a true representation of perfection and that’s the beauty of it all; we can create our own perfection. You have one life, make it one full of love, positivity and endless possibilities for yourself. You’re worthy. Let those words seep into your soul, mind, and body then practice.

Meet Kristen Valle: A newly engaged, flourishing artist in the Florida State Fine Arts major about to take art galleries by storm near you.
58
Kristen Valle Samantha Handley At Florida State University, the opportunities put forward are truly that of no other university. There is a constant cycle of art, whether it be screenwriting, videography, photography, or even magazines, being put out for the community to intake and admire. Recently, as a result of this output of creative content, a local artist caught my eye and blew me away with the art she’s been creating. Kristen Valle is a senior at Florida State, and she is reaching the final stages of her Bachelor in Fine Arts degree. She recently showcased a couple of her pieces, one of which was a main project of hers for the BFA, at an art show for her class where her work astounded all who attended the event. Kristen is a painter and she can bring a human face to life on a canvas, seemingly effortlessly; but who really see’s what goes on behind an artists’ closed door? “A painting of this size could take anywhere from a month to two months of work, and sometimes even more than that,” Valle expressed while referencing her piece Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. The painting vulnerably exposes the expression of deep and raw emotion of the individual depicted in the artwork. When Valle explained her inspirations behind the piece, she spoke of a recent event in her life in which she experienced the death of a close one of whom she was unfortunately personally in the presence of at the time of passing. She explained that the death pulled out emotions in her that immediately inspired her to create her painting, which seems to depict someone, perhaps herself, curled up in pain on a bed. She says that the point of view of the painting is of somebody looking down at this pained soul from above, and the deliberate waves painted through the middle of the piece that distort and merge the overlapping of images, illustrate the different levels and ranges of emotions being felt as she endures the mourning period. On top of the amount of course work Kristen is tirelessly working on as she prepares herself for graduation, she’s also about to take another huge dive into the real world so to speak. Kristen will be getting married after she graduates to her fiancé, and boyfriend of many years, Christian, and she could not have seemed any more thrilled to be doing so when she shared the news.
So, a huge congratulations Kristen Valle on your amazing art work and on your engagement, on behalf of myself and the team at Swatch Magazine. Check out more art work by Kristen on her Instagram page @kristenvalleart, and don’t forget to go out and 59 support local artists in the community like herself.

the
good
berry
O
riginally opened in June of 2017, and with locations in both Midtown and College Town, The Good Berry is the perfect place to fulfill of all your breakfast dreams. The Good Berry specializes in açaí bowls, which are derived from the traditional Brazilian dish açaí na tigela, or “açaí in the bowl.” These are made with pureed açaí berries, and are typically topped with oatmeal or granola, as well as fruits like bananas, and are essentially smoothies in bowl-form. It’s almost like eating ice cream for breakfast. Except it’s healthy. It’s a win-win situation. Good Berry offers classic toppings like granola, pineapple, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, almonds, chocolate chips, and peanut butter, as well as unique toppings like goji berries, dates, almond butter, chia seeds, hemp seeds, bee pollen, and paccoa, a Brazilian peanut candy which Olivia Nahas, an employee at the College Town location, likens to powdered peanut butter. They also offer an assortment of drizzles, like agave, Nutella, honey, dulce de leche, and condensed milk. With a small bowl, you have a choice of three toppings, with a regular you can pick four toppings, and the large coming in clutch with a whopping five. You can practically get all your food groups with that one!
All sizes include granola and your choice of drizzle, as well as the option to add extra toppings or drizzles for an additional small price. But while they specialize in açaí bowls, their options range everywhere from smoothies, to salads, to specialty toasts, like the Sweet Toast and the Nutty Toast, which both offer lots of flavor and a variety of ingredients. Their salads are known for their unique and yummy toppings, such as avocado, sweet peas, and tortilla strips. Good Berry’s popular PB & Açaí smoothie is packed full of super foods, featuring ingredients like blueberries, açaí, orange juice, strawberries, banana, and paccoa. Their Pink Dreams smoothie is also a fan-favorite, as it includes pitaya, more commonly known as dragon-fruit. And you never have to worry about the quality of the ingredients. Good Berry is vegan-friendly and serves almost entirely organic products. They buy most of their fruits from Whole Foods or Lucky’s Market, both of which sell locally-grown fruits and vegetables. Whether you’re looking for something sweet or savory, this place knows how to keep you satisfied. Açaí you, Good Berry!

o you have one thing that you could live without? How about two things? Three? Do all of your possessions hold sentimental value, or are they completely essential to your life? Of all the trends to suddenly take Millennials by storm, minimalism seems to be the one that might stay. From those who take it to the extreme, reducing all their possessions and moving into a tiny house, to those who just want to reduce clutter and achieve a more “Scandinavian” design, minimalism has rapidly become part of millenial life. It’s not surprising that millennials have gravitated towards this trend. As one of the most stressed and pressured generations, we have gravitated towards reducing clutter, emphasising mental health, and limiting personal stresses as our careers and societal pressures continue to grow. Minimalism seems to be the perfect balance for our consumerism driven society to combat the intense pressure that is felt to accumulate “stuff ”, beccause unfortunately, supposedly those possessions have a direct relationship to your rank in this ridiculous hierarchy that has evolved. Reality TV stars have made celebrities out of people with no particular talents who appear happier than us because they have more money, bigger houses, expensive clothes and cars. Minimalism questions what really makes you happy. Take a moment and think of five things you couldn’t live without. For many of us, the first thing on that isn’t something, it’s someone: your family, your friends, your pet. By limiting the clutter in your life and only holding onto those things that truly make you happy, we, as millenials, can begin to manage our stress and anxiety. There is freedom in reduction. But where do you start? If you were to type “steps to becoming a minimalist”, you’d be assaulted by thousands of websites looking to convince you that getting rid of all your things will be a cure all. Living a clutter free lifestyle can seem daunting but by taking little steps you can limit stress and anxiety. Take a moment and write down why you think becoming a minimalist would be good for you. Think about what you need to really and truly be happy. Start small! Put things in a box and leave them there for a month. If you never open that box, those things are not essential from your happiness! Whatever the reasons for considering minimalism, reducing clutter and discovering what truly makes you happy can limit stress and anxiety. Less is more.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS You always hear people saying less is more. Which
is true, but in fashion and with clothes that can be a little bit different at times because it’s acceptable to be, well, extra. Details have always been something in fashion that makes a piece of clothing different from an ordinary one. I mean who wants to look basic? All the power to you if you do, but for those of you seeking high fashion, find it in the details. In the past two years, details have become more and more intricate, increasingly found in shoes, jackets, jeans, and even bags/clutches. Embroidery for example is huge, it’s the core of detail-orientated fashion. Although this trend has been around for a long time it has re-emerged lately in time for the spring and summer seasons. Embroidery is often showcased on the runway but recently it has become more accessible to the public, and can be seen just walking down the street at a variety of luxury/ chain stores. Gucci was one of the first stores where embroidery became prominent, particularly in their bags and shoes. Gucci’s famous Marmont bag for example has an intricate twist of details embroidered in it. Gucci offers simple bags that just rock the legendary GG symbol in juxtaposition to its bags such as the Marmont with beautiful details. But its not just bags that have embroidery, it’s everywhere. This season embroidery is huge in denim and shoes too. Jeans have always been a staple in everyone’s wardrobe (duh), the basic blues. But now a variation of jeans with flower embroidery that is so delicately cute has become increasingly popular in stores such as Forever21 and Urban Outfitters. With this style of jeans it’s unnecessary to spice up an outfit with a colored or patterned shirt because the jeans become the star of the ensemble. Jean jackets too with embroidered pearls have become a popular trend during the recent seasons. Like jean pants, jean jackets are a staple item that everyone likely owns or really should, so why not spice that piece of clothing up with some cool details like pearls or embroidery. The best thing about embroidery is that it is so versatile and will look amazing on everyone. If you
are feeling super crafty, you can even do it yourself! Another popular detail that has re-emerged this season is fringe. As festival season approaches with spring and summer, fringe is still a fashionable piece that adds a flirty fun detail to clothing and accessories. Fringe is something that really gives an outfit a super boho, festival vibe and makes a basic piece of clothing such a graphic tee really intriguing. So wearing fringes this season is highly recommended; whether it’s incorporated into a jacket or bag, this detail will make your festival fits looking fire. In addition to these trends, a must need for everyone in their closets is a pair of simple white tennis shoes. I mean of course, they go with anything. But if one day you are feeling daring, why not change it up and switch it up with a pair of sneakers, such as Nikes that flaunt cool prints and details. It’s not just clothes and bags but fashion as a whole that has begun to incorporate embroidery, so mixing it up with detailed shoes is a fun way to ensure that your footwear isn’t the most minimalistic part of your outfit. My favorite way of making a normal outfit a little more special is by wearing a detailed pair of shoes by bands such as Nike or Gucci that integrate cheetah prints or flowers. Because it’s the time to really express yourself and be brave in fashion, why not flaunt it and don’t be afraid to shy away from detail. Having details in your wardrobe really shows off your personal flare for fashion and will showcase how you truly rock you and your style! So don’t be shy to switch it up this spring and summer season. It’s all in the details.

Frida Khalo
By: Odra V. Dorante
C oming from a Hispanic background, I had a general idea of who Frida Kahlo was and what she represented. As a freshman in high school, I had the privilege of taking IB Art amongst very talented students, one of whom did her own illustration of “The Two Frida’s,” one of Kahlo’s most famous works of art. After this student’s presentation, I developed an appreciation for this woman who had such vivid paintings, which were in contrast to the somberness of her life. As a freshman in college, I took Introduction to Film and one of our assignments was to write a five page analysis and critique of a film that stood out to you; I chose Frida directed by Julie Taymor. After viewing that film, I knew that there was something about this woman that made me view life with a new set of eyes. How could someone that had endured thirty plus operations due to polio, survived a nearly fatal bus accident and went through an agonizing love life still view life in such a positive manner? That’s when I knew that I had found someone I could genuinely say I looked up to.
102
I believe that today more than ever, beauty and fashion should be appreciated and valued for what it truly is. Frida was not known to be the most beautiful woman, in fact, she was trademarked for her unibrow which for many put her in the “not so aesthetically pleasing” category. She was known for her incredible talent as an artist, especially when it came to self-portraits. But I think the reason why Fridamania became so prominent in pop culture so suddenly was because she represents so much more than those things. She was a woman that, despite all her tragedy, kept a positive attitude towards life. She fought passionately for what she believed in, went against cultural norms, and above all, channeled her misfortunes into strength and onto a canvas. It’s refreshing to have an icon like this in times where cosmetic surgery, excessive makeup and outer appearance are glorified. I think it’s crucial for women, and men, to remember who they are and what their desire in life is. What is inside of you, that is your gift to this world. Being yourself, that is the best gift you can give.
“At the end of the day, we endure much more than we think we can.” – Frida Kahlo
Feminism FREEDOM Fortitude F rida is a feminist icon because she
fought for her own rights in a time when Mexico was considered to have a conservative, traditional and androcentric society. She is considered an emblem of freedom because for one, she found freedom through the medium of painting even though she was confined to the limits of her bed. Additionally, because of her rebellious soul, she explored taboo subjects such as sexuality, maternity and the role of women in society and was vocal about her stance on the tolerance and support of such subjects.
She wasn’t afraid of being unique and considered herself a bisexual Mexican despite being in love with her panzon, Diego Rivera. Undoubtedly, she was a controversial woman, who led sexual adventures with the bourgeoisies, drank until she lost consciousness and abused of painkillers at certain points in life after having multiple miscarriages. But not once did she give up, she laughed and smiled at life because in the end, that’s what life is; a journey of ups and downs where you must laugh to get through it all.

everything exists as frequencies and vibrations. This is why crystals provide more benefit than just their beauty. Because the energy field of a crystal is among the most powerful and intentional in the world, they have the ability to transform our own energy fields upon interaction. Due to all the stressors life throws our way, our energy fields are less than perfect, leaving us vulnerable to all kinds of negativity and illnesses. Crystal energy works to balance out and repair our energy fields, aiding in
protection, healing, and attracting positive forces into our lives. Every crystal has its benefits but here are a few that I find to be particularly versatile and relevant to the life of a busy college student.
clear quartz Known as The Stone of the Life Force, Clear Quartz has a unique cleansing ability which enhances clarity, communication, and spiritual awareness. This crystal encourages the production of endorphins and is thought to stimulate both the immune and circulatory systems, enhancing energy flow and bringing the body into balance. Clear Quartz also works as an amplifier of energies, enhancing the effects of other crystals it is paired with.
Malachite Malachite is one of the most important stones for protection from negative energies. This emerald green crystal permeates the auric field with positive vibrations; absorbing negative energies from both the atmosphere and the body. It counteracts harmful influences such as electromagnetic pollution and overly bright fluorescents, so it is a good stone to keep in your workspace. Malachite is also known as the Stone of Transformation and encourages change and emotional risk-taking.
amethyst As of the most well-known crystals, Amethyst is recognized by its intense purple color. This crystal is known as The Stone of Balance and is particularly helpful in overcoming addictions. Whether it be smoking, drinking, or overeating, Amethyst helps curb overindulgence and aids in giving up bad habits. It also helps clear negative or addictive emotional patterns and is used often in crystal healing (especially good at dissipating headaches).
citrine For those in need of a creative spark, Citrine is one of the best crystals for the job. The frequency of this stone awakens our imagination, increases clarity and opens the higher mind. Using this stone results in magnified will and manifestation, allowing our wishes to become a reality. Also known as The Merchant’s Stone, Citrine assists in acquiring and maintaining wealth. It is helpful for good communication in business transactions and encourages both frugality and generosity when handling one’s money.
mookaite Mookaite is one of the best study tools because it aids in overcoming procrastination by revealing the true reason for avoiding certain tasks. Its grounding energy helps stabilize mood in order to stay focused and ward off distracting thoughts. Mookaite also stimulates the second chakra, boosting both our intuition and natural instincts. It helps one achieve perspective in life by allowing us to reframe our own experiences.

Do you remember that feeling?
You know the one. The one you’d give almost anything to feel again. It encompasses almost every single emotion a person can experience. It runs wild, trying to find an outlet, only to build up to incomparable measure. With this one emotion, you’re capable of doing anything and everything… But should you?
In this daringly titled and seriously humorous book about why men love bitches, Sherry Argov delves deep into why keeping that special one on their toes might be the key to unlocking the whimsical feeling we like to call love. In Argov’s novel, she gives her readers attraction principles. These attraction principles are guidelines to love, as I like to call them. If you’re ever in a situation where you’re not quite sure what the next move should be in the game of love, well, just pull out Why Men Love Bitches and the answer is bound to be on any given page. Don’t be deceived by the title though, as off-putting as it may be. Men don’t really love bitches, and if you’re dating someone that does (God forbid), show yourself the door. What do men love then? For the answer, I’m going to give a list of the best advice Argov could relay to her readers, as demonstrated through her 100 attraction principles. Get ready, these may come as a shocker.
KELSEY KING 116
“Act like a prize and you’ll turn him into a believer.” Seriously ladies. Always strut that confidence like you’re on a Victoria’s Secret fashion show runway. Or NYFW. Whatever you prefer...But don’t ever lose that belief in yourself. As soon as you begin to believe that he is the only prize to be won, you’ve already lost.
“Sex and the ‘spark’ are not one and the same.” Sometimes we confuse the two though, right? It’s essential to keep the two separate and even more so, to not give it all away up front. When sex is not at the top of the list in a relationship, the “spark” becomes more noticeable and you get to know the man for who he is. In the end, you know whether you’re together for physical comfort, or real love.
“Any time a woman competes with another woman, she demeans herself”. It might be # 30 but this rule is as good as gold. No man is ever worth competing with your fellow females. This life is already hard enough when looking for compatibility in the opposite sex, so why complicate the struggle even more? Remember, we rise by lifting others.
“The more independent you are of him, the more interested he will be”. You may do a lot of things with your friends, but you also take time for yourself. So, why wouldn’t you do the same when in a relationship? If you’re constantly together, the mystery and spice fizzles away because, well…you’re always together. It’s important that you always keep a sense of individuality and independence for the sake of your person and the relationship.
“The most attractive quality of all is dignity”. Always hold your head high. Know that you’re not made for everyone, and everyone is not made for you. Never compromise yourself for the thrill of the ‘maybe’. Remember that it’s better to walk away from a situation that makes you doubt your self-worth, and that when you do, fix your crown and start walking towards your throne.
A
rgov is really like your best friend telling you that you’re too good to settle for less. Believe me, she has a long list of handy tricks to take with you on your journey towards love, but to me, these sum up all 100 of them into 5 succinct principles. If there’s one more piece of advice she could leave with you, it would probably be this: If it comes; let it. If it goes; let it. In Argov’s voice, a “bitch does not stop moving to her own rhythm”. So, just keep on keeping on, the rest will follow. 117
Spring Shoe Trends
Pastel
By Ally Kuhn
With the coming and going of the seasons, shoes remain a key component to any look. However, in the recent years, there has been a surge in the importance of the shoe and the diversity that it can provide to any look. Here in Spring 2018, shoes are taking over the fashion world. Pastel, clear details, “dad sneakers, western embellishments and funky socks paired with a fun sandal are just a few of the trends that have been seen this spring season.
Pastel colors are a key component to any spring fashion wardrobe, but this season especially they are being seen largely celebrated in the shoe industry. Pumps, mules, sandals, and sneakers are all being sported in a fun punch of color varying from lilac to a more muted lime green color. A pastel shoe can be a complement to any outfit ranging from pair of flare jeans and a flowy shirt to a mini dress, with the shoes being the star of the show. Pastel colors enable the shoe to be the main piece of the outfit instead of focusing all the attention on the top or bottom.
118
Socks
Coinciding with the dad sneaker trend, socks with sandals have made an unexpected appearance among the trends of Spring 2018. Pairing a funky sock, with frilly detailing or more traditionally girly elements, with a heeled sandal or even a classic pair of birkenstocks has been seen making its way from the runway to campus. Crew-cut socks are the best way to achieve this look and add a surprise factor to any look.
Clear
Western
Western embellishments are making their transition from just belts to the shoe world. Stemming from the more traditional and expected Cowboy Boot, the classic stitching and structured style has morphed into booties and heels alike. From a country concert, to a night out, the Western embellishment trend keeps in touch with its roots and has made its way into the hearts of street style aficionados and the true southern girls alike.
The “Dad”
Clear or see through details are huge this spring season, allowing for an unexpected flash of skin. A more obscure detail, the plastic inlets, being seen in pairs of heeled sandals especially, add a unique element to any outfit. These details provide a futuristic detail to any look; a little showy but not over the top. Popular ways to rock this look would be to wear a clear heel in a pair of pumps or a pair of sandals with clear straps.
The “Dad” Sneaker has been a controversial, but fun trend spotted this season. Brands from the more elite Balenciaga to a more traditional Asics have been seen bringing their own twists to this trend. Coming in the form of a more clunky sneaker with some exaggerated soles or colors, these sneakers can be worn for everyday wear with a simple jeans and a graphic tee or with a fun dress for a night out to add an unexpected twist to any outfit. This trend has proven that comfort is always in style.

he words on the tongue of the female population in 2018 are those of vindication and solidarity; time is up. Battles of inequality and sexual harassment have sprouted as burdens grown from the backs of women for years. A movement that has picked up speed and expanded within a matter of months, is rooted in a long history of reaching for the moon, and landing in the space station. Young girls are raised by the world to think twice about pursuing careers in maledominated fields like business, law, and medicine. We are taught how to grow skin thick enough to bear the load, while silently indoctrinated with the knowledge that we will be seen as secondhand, but there is no justification for inequality. The steel bones holding this movement together are irrefutable examples of disparity worn on the chests of modern women. The 2017 film All The Money in The World gained recognition not based in value, but in proof of the inequitable treatment of female actresses in Hollywood. The film starred Mark Wahlberg, who raked in a total of $1.5 million dollars, and four-time Academy Award nominated actress Michelle Williams, who was paid $80 per diem- $1000 total. This striking oppression created a nationwide buzz, but unfortunately was not the first nor the last disheartening story. According to the Director’s Guild of America, in 2013 and 2014 women directed only 6.4% of films-only 3% of box office pictures. When Harvey Weinstein, giant of the entertainment industry, was exposed for multiple instances of sexual harassment and sexual assault, the Time’s Up movement became impossible to dismiss. While the notes of this societal issue can be traced throughout recent history, the entertainment world has not always been this way. In truth, the segment of people being pushed away and discriminated against, are the people who built the industry in the first place. To many, the image of the early Hollywood woman bears the face of a Joan Crawford or an Ingrid Bergman. History tells us differently. Early cinema was born in the minds of the earliest filmmakers. The first female director, Alice Guy-Blaché, created her first film in 1896, and later went on to create her own production
company, Solax. Her film, La Fée Choux (The Cabbage Fairy), has been hailed as the first fiction film ever made. Trailblazing lady Lois Weber was pioneering films in 1907, and stood as a legitimate rival to celebrated filmmaker D.W. Griffith. Griffith, the creator of Birth of a Nation, is considered a father of cinema, yet he was born only a year before Alice Guy-Blaché created her first film. The entire film industry is constructed by women behind the camera, but as with any great thing, time changed the narrative. Filmmaking began shortly after the invention of the Cinematograph by the Lumiere brothers in 1895. Short clips of a passing train, or factory employees leaving after a day of work matured into full length silent films. The peak of the silent era,1910s and 1920s, saw an emergence of actors, narrative, and direction. Women like Guy-Blaché and Weber had been directing and producing their own films for years. Equal representation in a key industry was a reality for women. It was the silent era that brought glamour and prestige, and consequently change. The formation of studios blurred the production process, with directors seen as producers and leaders “calling the shots.” Unsurprisingly given the role of women in history at the time, society found an issue with women being seen in such a position of power. Journalists and reporters began promoting and glamorizing the idea of female stardom, instead of the accomplishments made behind the camera. As history has shown time and time again, perception becomes reality, and soon the role of women in Hollywood took the form of a well-lit love interest. Once that mold was set, it became an unbreakable trope, with a fierce pattern. Soon the successes of early trailblazers were forgotten, while the idea of female independence seemed to float further and further away. Flash forward to 2018, women in Hollywood are beginning to dig their way out of the oppressive mound they have been buried under. As we fight for equality and respect in all industries, it is imperative that we remember where we have been and where will go. The lingering taste we once had of equality and recognition may seem far away, but a taste only makes the craving stronger.

KAT TORRES Who was your first fashion icon? Audrey Hepburn. I remember my junior year of high school just swooning over her effortless chic style. That woman is a legend.
What makes you stand out from the rest of the beauty/fashion bloggers you know? Creativity. I’m always finding new ways to be creative in my styling and repurposing items I have in my wardrobe.
Questions by Kelsey King & Odra Dorante What’s your favorite part about being a fashion blogger? The excitement I get publishing a new post, the itchy feeling I get when I want to share a new trick or a new way of styling something. The fact that I get to live out one of my passions and know I’m on the road to do it as a job.
What are your current spring essentials? Right now I cannot (and will not) be without my witch hazel toner; I spray it every morning and night. It’s the perfect boost for my skin. Something else I’ve really gotten into this spring are dainty necklaces. I love layering all of them since I’ve been more minimal with my accessories. Those two items for me are essential right now. Hydration + dainty necklaces. Random, right? Ha!
How do you motivate yourself to continue inspiring others and keeping your social media platforms up to date on those days where you just want to quit? Through passion. It’s really just a fire. I stay motivated because I just love styling. My blog and social media platforms are my outlet to showcasing what I love about fashion. When I get discouraged I go back and remember why I started, what I’ve learned, what I’ve accomplished, and even think back to when people tell me how I’ve inspired them to try something new. That keeps me going because I know someone is listening.
143
What makes West Palm a unique place for fashion? How do you think it stands out from places like LA and NYC? West Palm is unique because there are loads of people that live here that are originally from somewhere else. This being said, everyone brings their unique point of view to the West Palm scene – it brings culture.
How would you describe your fashion sense? I always find it hard to pick a category when it comes to do this but there are certainly some styles that are more prominent than others. I’d say I’m pretty edgy because I’m always trying to pair pieces others wouldn’t necessarily wear together. Or is the word for that ‘fashion forward’ ? Who knows! Let’s just say I’m the edgy-creative girl that inspires you to be daring.
What place(s), for example London or New York, do you draw most inspiration from? I draw inspiration from my closet. Ha! I swear. It’s my happy place, I can sit in there for hours just trying to create looks. (On surveys I put ‘sit in my closet’ as a hobby. Seriously, ask anyone.) Sometimes I have my Pinterest open and I’ll type anything with ‘street style’ after it. I get tons of inspiration from street style. I love seeing how creative people can be with their wardrobe.
144
How do you develop the content for your blog? Developing blog content can be super tough at times. Just because I’m one of those creatives that gets an idea, plans it, executes, edits, writes, drafts, publishes in one day. So, to stay sane I try to keep a notebook or my planner on me 24/7. That way I can write my ideas down and properly task them out throughout the week. Then I tell Nick, my fiancée, about it and we plan out how we’re going to shoot it and what I can teach or share through the content.
What is some advice you can give to aspiring bloggers? Find your niche. See what the community is missing and ask yourself how you can fill that void. There are tons of bloggers out there but there’s always a unique point of view. Use it! Show us something different.
What are some budgeting tips you have when buying clothes? Ah, this is my favorite thing to tell people. Shop the sale section but there’s a trick. I love to shop for current trends in the sale section because chances are there is something that’s considered trendy for spring that was also trendy for last summer and is still lingering around in the sale. Find it. Grab it. Mix it in with your newer pieces and bring that trend back to life. Another tip, go thrifting on your day off. You will need time to sort through the mess to find the gems. It’s worth it. You can find amazing, classic and even trendy pieces! Remember, trends always comes back.
When choosing a location to shoot, what do you look for? Location scouting is my least favorite thing to do. We all have to do it though! I start out by thinking what my look is saying. I figure out what I’m trying to showcase then go from there. Nick and I usually just get in the car and drive around. When we see something that speaks to us, we park! When we do that, I try to keep a mental picture of any other cool spots along the drive to come back to with a different look. Since 99.9% of my photos end up going on my Instagram feed I look for whatever best represents a cohesive feel for my feed. For me, cohesive is a weird term because I’m always growing and changing what I like. I try not to stand in front of walls anymore just because I want my photos and locations to be more lifestyle. I want to show you where I am and what I’m doing. I opt for more of a location to add depth and character to my photos. When starting out though, finding colored walls or plain white walls are a great starting point.
