#01 A NARRATIVE PARADOX Location: Bangalore| Karnataka Academic: 5th semester 2016 Typology : Institutional Individual

A design for a state of the art film school in the deeply residential part of Koramangala. The intention was to facilitate high quality education in the various processes of film making, to involve the public in most of these activities along with establishing a connection between cinema and architecture. Film and architecture tend to have quite a few overlapping territories. Their spatial mapping is therefore, material. Film creates space for viewing, perusing, and wandering about. As in all forms of journey, space is physically consumed as a vast commodity. Quite the same way architecture is the manipulations of space. The design intent stems from an idea derived from the plot and narrative of a film. I was looking to explore the characteristics of the plot and how it’s used to convey the intent of the film.

The site is located in a prime location, it sits on a large piece of land next to the Koramangala park and lake front. It has multiple points and means of access. The placement next to the lake gives it a very scenic view away from the hustle bustle whilst still being connected to the city. There are numerous eateries, retail and commercial establishments within walking distance and a short drive way.

CONCEPT Envisioning the concept into architecture started with the exploration of masses along the site, which lead into architectural language exploration and lastly into materiality. The blocks sitting opposite to each other represent the protagonist and antagonist who like in a cinematic plot highlight each other’s qualities and features due to their innate differences. The two parallel blocks are connected to each other by another block acting as a bridge between these, similar to how the narrative ties the characters and other elements of a film together cohesively. The project narrative is a metaphor to the elements of a film. The image above is an abstraction of the project’s physical and metaphorical elements by depicting the view from that of a cinema-goer in the context of the project. It is a juxtaposition of the differences , the old and the new, the classical and the contemporary.

SECTIONAL ELEVATION

The building is designed to evoke a sense of drama and interest that can perforate everyday life. There’s a sense of playfulness which comes through the combination of interesting geometry and manipulations of scale within the design. The lake is used to draw out a water body through the site to give it a point of interest and to define an axis through the site. Another important point is that the outdoor in the site itself is designed to be used such as the open air amphitheater and the drive-in movie theatre. The observatory tower acts as mode of circulation and a viewing tower next to the lake.

03 Block B behind represents a classical and restrained approach whereas the block A showcases a modern steel and concrete machine like presence. The forms are further evolved according to the functions they house.

#02 TRAIN OF THOUGHT Location: Hogenekkal | Tamilnadu Academic: 5th semester 2016 Typology : Eco-Lodge Individual

SITE The project brief was to come up with a design for a set of 11 dwellings on a bridge connecting 2 cliffs over a patch of river to function as a writers, artists retreat and studio space where they could spend a short period to get away from their usual hustle-bustle, get back to the nature and focus on their material or just relax and take a break. The site is located on a patch of hogennakkal river which flows between two parallel landmasses, surrounded by lush greenery and views. The span between the two landmasses is approximately 50 meters. CONCEPTUAL DIAGRAM

My concept revolved around the idea of a railway bridge, the design intent was to capture the moment a train passes through the bridge and to develop this image into a structure. This design consists of a railway bridge made of a truss system as the structural exoskeleton and the residences or dwellings placed in it represented as the train coaches. The units are designed in a minimalistic manner, only to act as the medium for visitors to interact with the site without overpowering their experience of it.

EXPLODED AXONOMETRIC VIEW The plan has a very linear circulation in terms of an elongated corridor which passes through the bridge connecting each of the 11 dwellings. The structure of the bridge is a self-supporting truss system. The vertical, horizontal and diagonal members distribute the forces in a stable manner and prevents the structure from buckling. The exoskeleton, apart from being the structural member also acts as a further element to reinforce the idea of passing through a railway bridge.

#03 THE REEF’S EDGE Location: Rameswaram| Tamil Nadu Academic: 8th semester 2018 Typology : Institutional +Research+Tourism Individual Thesis A Habitat conservation and Eco-tourism Centre in the Gulf of Mannar region. The current scenario is that the natural world and the human world are existing as separate entities in this region with neither of them thriving. This thesis would question if an architectural intervention can help bring them closer together to co-exist without invading each others spaces and also bring about more awareness to this region without destroying its essence. The reason for choosing this site is the unaddressed rich ecological context it has which is being endangered due to lack of awareness and other issues. Another factor is that the government and the GOMTB ( The Gulf of Mannar Trust Board) have proposed research and Eco tourism activities to come up in this region.

Site

CONCEPT The concept of this design was two fold. One for the project to act as a junction between the people and their livelihood with that of the natural ecosystem that existed in this region and the other was the architectural language and form which was abstracted from that of the sea. This project is designed to function as a medium of interaction between the human and the flora and fauna ecosystems that inhabit this space. The idea is try to integrate them in a harmonious relationship that can be mutually beneficial for their survival and nourishment.

EXPLORATION WITH VARIOUS SECTIONAL MODELS These were few of the conceptual sectional models made to explore the building form in response to light, ventilation, site context and functionality with respect to the program. This exercise brought out the various pros and cons in the basic design module, which were further iterated to proceed with the most suitable one for these conditions.

DESIGN AND PROGRAM The design idea was to come up with a state-of-the-art research and Eco-tourism facility to create awareness, sustainability, economic activity and to showcase this unique site. Program has 2 main components: research component attached with a residential section and a tourism component which could create awareness and economy to fund the research related activities and promote ecotourism facilitating a harmony to be maintained in this unique ecosystem.

The inspiration for this particular form came partly from the abstracted curvature of waves and the need to blend in with the site as much as possible, so much so that the building wouldn’t be visible to you till you are very close to it .The general height of the building is kept relatively low to adhere with the building regulations and to be sensitive to the site.

The images depict various points in the design, the general idea of this project is to let the users experience as much of the site as possible without imposing itself on it. All aspects of the design are selected in order to facilitate this. The architectural language is contemporary Indian in terms of the materials and aesthetic. The material chosen for the roof is of ferro cement due the distinctive curves that feature in this project. Apart from that there is the brick and concrete walls with terracotta elements in various spaces.

#04 THE VISTA Location: Orani| Italy Competetion Project: June-August 2021 Typology : Eco-Lodge +Tourism Swathi & Divya

“Take-away-tourism” has always been a critical issue for Sardinian small villages and minor museums. Visitors arrive by car from the coast, they visit the collection and as soon as they finish and they leave for the next destination. This is a chance to offer a sort of eco-hotel facility within the Nivola Museum complex might help to counter this take-away dynamic, fostering a different and maybe “one of a kind” type of touristic experience.

Competitors are therefore asked to imagine and design creative proposals focused on a unique and unconventional type of accommodation facility, located in the heart of the museum’s park. A privileged stopover for those tourists’ intent on traveling through the Nuorese region, and possibly also for those international artists who periodically reach Orani to set up their own exhibitions

SITE SECTION

CONCEPT The concept emanates from the intent to be contextual yet bold. The design theme is twofold, firstly it stems from the relationship of the site with the town of Orani and secondly the reaction to the immediate site context. The visual connect between the town and the project takes the central stage as we make a statement with the design. While the cabins look straight into the city, the entire structure takes on two appearances depending on the side of the town it is viewed from. On one side it looks like independent cabins perched amidst the varying landscape and on the other it appears like one united mass forming a wall between the landscape.

The intent is to treat the mass as a sculpture with a political theme viewed from the town. It is an ode to Costantino Nivola’s efforts in making art accessible to the public towards and creating a democratic society. Use of local materials and inspiration from local architecture was also drawn from Nivola’s ideologies. The structure takes on to the local landscape of the site with ease while the local stone is used to create a single bold entity that transitions from walls to pathways and pockets of interesting spaces. The cabins do not seek to melt into the site but take strategic positions drawn from the visual lines of the town. The inner spaces are curated with layers of scale, light and view. The design aims to achieve a dynamic but humble approach.

Another important aspect of this project was how a single entity, the pathway morphed into different elements throughout the various points in the site to create pockets of interesting spaces. It acts as seating in certain area, as arches, viewing portals, amphitheater and steps. It merges with the site and the project. View of the open communal space

#05 THALIR Location: Chennai | Tamilnadu Professional: Internship 2018 Firm: Studio Decode Typology: Urban Design Proposal Supervising Architect : Meghna Dutta Group: Swathi Vasan and 9 colleagues ‘Thalir’ signifies the need to allow for new voices to be heard, new innovations to be recognized and new bonds to be formed whilst being rooted to the ground. The design interventions are envisioned to be the catalysts that enable engagements between man, nature and culture and allow for buds to sprout in art, literature, history and knowledge. This project was an open ideas urban redevelopment competition organized by German NGO and the government of Chennai to redevelop, rejuvenate and bring recreational and economical activity in the stretch of metro line, right alongside which the Buckingham canal flows which was earlier one of the largest supply of water to that area but in recent times has been neglected and polluted . It was undertaken by a small group of us at my previous firm.

THE LIVING FILTER The ‘THALIR’ is designed to function as a living filter that will continuously work to improve not just the water quality but also the Social and Economic Environment and Ecosystem. A combination of rain gardens, bioswales, and other vernacular processes of black and grey water treatment are proposed to work together to enhance the quality of life under and above water.

#06 SHILPA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Location: Bangalore| Karnataka Professional: Internship 2018 Individual Firm: Studio Decode Supervising Architect : Vijay Kumar This upcoming project in the heart of Whitefield is situated in a very linear site with a gradual slope. The main idea in this project was on how to deal with the linearity of this site in a creative but also functioning method. This school focuses on the idea of verticality and how to create a spatial experience for the children as engaging as possible by moving away from the usual boxed approach of design. The classroom is designed especially taking in consideration of the age group and it’s overall need, also even though the building is very vertical there is adequate landscape and greenery throughout the building.

Due to the nature of the site, the challenge was to come up with a design that would create an engaging, interesting and nurturing spatial experience for the students and faculty. There were numerous evolutions and experimentations done with various factors into consideration. The building plan is to house the larger program area such as sports arenas, basketball court, running track, swimming pool etc on the lower most and the topmost floors due to the lack of space on the site. The other functions such as classrooms and labs are interspersed with a combination of landscaped and green areas to make the spatial experience more open.

I am the sole author of all the working drawings of this project seen on this portfolio. It greatly enhanced my ability to visualize parts of a building and be able to develop and draft it accurately. It helped to build my knowledge and skill base and to understand building construction and material details.

#07 REMEMBRANCE

Location: Virtual Platform Professional: Post graduate Competition project 2019 Group: Swathi Vasan and Tanuvi Hegde

The aim of the “Dying” competition is to develop design proposals for the cemetery typology, intended as a space – either material or immaterial – where we bury, honor or remember the dead. We envisioned this digital or virtual reality like application that would assist with the emotional and technical realities that one is faced with, which accompanies the death of our loved ones. All aspects of the project were equally worked on by myself and my other team member from the conceptualization to the final panels.

This was a competition project which was a collaboration between me and a friend . Our design intent was to deal with a particular aspect of death :

REMEMBRANCE: The emotional loss one is dealt with while encountering death is immense and the idea of our application is to act as a tool or device which acts as a guiding system to help deal with grief. It does so by storing a collection of all the recorded memories of the deceased such as pictures, videos, notes, voice recordings and converting some of this data into a virtual reality program. This app is activated by a small piece of tech which can be embedded in any kind of accessory you use in your everyday routine and can be used anytime and anywhere. You can use this to navigate through the virtual reality platform.

PARAMETRIC AND BIO MIMETIC ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP FABRICATION & INSTALLATION By Swathi Vasan and 4 other group members The four day workshop was an introduction to parametric architecture and the softwares used such as Grasshopper, Kangaroo and Weaver bird. The final product of this workshop was an installation made in groups of 5. The final module focused on optimizing the forms generated from simulation to fabrication using all the softwares and techniques used the days before. We learnt how to prepare a geometry for fabrication at various scales from 3D printing to cardboard and in groups to assemble installation of various forms.

I was involved in generation of the form, fabrication and putting together the installation. Other collaborators : Aparijitha Viju, Manolin Rojer, Pechumuthu and Krishna

THEATRE AND SET-DESIGNING DESIGNING A SET OF 1:20 SCALE By Swathi Vasan and 3 other group members An elective course in the final year of architecture school aimed at understanding the basics of theatre and set-designing through various activities and assignments. This particular project was a set designing and fabricating a 1:20 model of a plot conceptualized along with it. My group worked on a crime scene being played out at a railway station, which lead us to recreate a set of a train station and accompanying elements to it.

This project was done as part of a three day workshop which involved extensive dialogues and collaboration between participants from all around the world. The image was the product of the final day in which we had to create an architectural critical image on a particular topic in groups of 4. This image was derived from the topic “ Memories , Monuments and Heritage in Architecture”. Our idea was to have a take about the globalization of world heritage and how we as a society are losing our sense of identity due to globalization and replication that we run the risk of places losing their indigenous heritage and culture.
