The Role of Physical Change in Culture Change
PERSON DIRECTED VALUES + PRINCIPLES REPRINTED FROM THE SMART CONSUMER’S GUIDE TO QUALITY CARE
An initiative of Lifespan of Greater Rochester, NY and sourced from Pioneer Network. pioneernetwork.net
As presented by Chris Perna, CEO Eden Alternative, and Rob Simonetti, Project Architect SWBR Architects, at the 2015 Environments for Aging Conference. Key learnings, process improvements, and takeaways: 1. Individual, organizational, and physical change, as three elements working together, can drive deep cultural change. 2. An effective planning process can support deep, sustainable culture change resulting in true person-directed care. 3. Specific design elements can and should be used to support specific cultural objectives. 4. Slow Down. Recognize the value of time as it relates to our ability to process and accept change. 5. Create a Program focused on the
6. Benchmark other Person Directed Environments. Through stories and images bring stakeholders to these environments and discuss positive and negative experiences.
• Know each person • Each person can and does make a difference • Relationship is the fundamental building block of a transformed culture • Respond to spirit, as well as mind and body • Risk taking is a normal part of life • Put person before task • All elders are entitled to selfdetermination wherever they live • Community is the antidote to institutionalization • Do unto others as you would have them do unto you • Promote the growth and development of all • Shape and use the potential of the environment in all its aspects: physical, organizational, psychosocial, spiritual • Practice self-examination, searching for new creativity and opportunities for doing better • Recognize that culture change and transformation are not destinations but a journey always a work in progress
7. Organizations cannot simply build a new environment to achieve person-directed care; they must build culture first. 8. Physical design and organizational culture need to remain in balance to support persondirected care practices. 9. You can’t get there unless you start. 10. Go deep. Step through the door and close it behind you.

SWBR Architects is teaming with Saint Elizabeth Home to co-present a Green House Project webinar on February 25, 2016 at 3:00PM, EST. The webinar will explore how a well-designed environment supports person directed care and the collaborative processes that lead to quality of life and real home. The webinar, which was also presented at The Green House Project Annual Meeting in Loveland, CO in November 2015, uses the Saint Elizabeth Home Green House as a case study. SWBR will also present “The Role of Physical Change in Culture Change” at the Eden Alternative Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas in May 2016.

Lesson’s Learned LESSONS LEARNED FROM A DECADE OF GREEN HOUSE® HOME EXPERIENCE
Debbie Wiegand, Project Guide for The Green House Project and Rob Simonetti, Project Architect at SWBR Architects have presented some of the many lessons learned since The Green House Project inception. Presented as a Webinar for The Green House Project and as an education session at the 2015 Pioneer Network Conference, the session focused on ideas to bring forward as new adopters consider building Green House homes. Wiegand and Simonetti discussed strategies for addressing regulatory hurdles, Green House Project Design Survey results, and the changing nature of the Bath Spa. Of note in the Spa we’ve learned: • Size matters – Smaller is better • Provider radiant heat panels to warm elders • Select tubs that both elder and staff are comfortable with • Place the Spa immediately adjacent to the bedrooms
• Ensure privacy and dignity • The Spa is not a closet -Provide an adjacent space for storage • Start from a residential image and then build in required functionality
SWBR Architects, expert in the design of Environments for Person Directed Care, has success in the household, small house, and Green House® models. We recognize the privilege and responsibility of being involved in this work and will assist in educating affected staff on the merits and impacts of changing to an environment which supports person centered care.
