GREETINGS FROM THE Conference CHAIRS
June 2011 As co-‐chairs for this year’s BEEP Leadership Conference, we welcome you to Orlando, Florida as we celebrate the program’s 42nd anniversary! BEEP continues to make history as the National Urban League’s longest-‐running program; and we celebrate its four decades of service to students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). We are proud to tell the stories of the more than 1 million young people BEEP has touched, and continue to motivate them to see their futures in a different, more fulfilling way. That’s what these next few days will be all about ― sharing those stories, and creating legacies that will last over the next four decades. That’s why you, our volunteers, are so important. You continue to share your time, talent, and experiences, while inspiring success by challenging students to be leaders. Thank you, BEEPers, for your continued dedication and commitment. GREETINGS FROM CENTRAL FLORIDA Urban LEague
Welcome to Orlando, Florida, “The City Beautiful” and home to the 2011 Black Executive Exchange Program ‗s (BEEP) Annual Conference, “BEEP 2011: The C.A.S.E. for Effective Leadership.” The Central Florida Urban League is an affiliate poised on the brink of greatness. 2010 was filled with epic milestone events and exciting developments that continue to bolster the Urban League mission throughout Central Florida. Among them, the opening of three new locations: CFUL – Washington Shores Service Center; CFUL – Downtown Learning Center; and CFUL – Administrative Office. Nationally, we celebrated the Centennial Anniversary of the National Urban League—commemorating 100 years of being at the forefront of the civil rights movement. This year has continued to propel us towards greatness! Among our successes is the launching of the Center for Innovation. Based on a vision of empowerment, the CFUL established the ―Center for Innovation‖ as a wrap around betterment program that focuses on providing the employability skills needed to achieve a living wage and an overall enhanced quality of life. This vision has received outstanding long term support from both regional public agencies and our local business partners who look at the CFUL‘s programs as contributing to the establishment of a strong foundation for the long term success of the region. However, we must keep things in perspective. We know that none of our successes can be accomplished without the support of our corporate, faith-based and community partners. We also acknowledge that our future is in the hands of our cherished youth. BEEP affords us the opportunity to share learning experiences across generations, cultivate new leaders, and inspire achievements "beyond the possible" through committed involvement and operational excellence. Thank you for participating in this year‘s conference. I commend all the students, professionals, and sponsors who have dedicated their time to making this program and event the success that it has become. We are honored and excited to host you. I know your agenda is a jam-packed with exciting workshops and opportunities, but I do hope you will have the opportunity to experience one of the most hospitable cities in America. Best wishes for a successful conference and great success in all your endeavors. Warmest regards,
Allie L. Braswell, Jr. President & CEO

Welcome Letter
GREETINGS FROM BEEP CENTRAL
June 2011 To The BEEP Family: To be effective is to be ‘producing a deep and vivid impression; striking; prepared and available for service.’ The goal of the Black Executive Exchange Program as we head into our 42nd year of service to students on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities is to build on last year’s foundation-where we learned to be audacious--in order to lead even more effectively. Our theme for this week’s conference is “BEEP 2011: The Case For Effective Leadership,” which will feature topics that explore the different, varied aspects of leadership, from communication to vision, from service to excellence, arming us with the tools necessary to lead. We’re excited to be at the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes in sunny Orlando, Florida, and to share with you a content-focused, streamlined three days, which will serve as a strong call to action, with each event highlighting the urgent need for each participant to continue developing their leadership skills. Special thanks to this year’s conference lead sponsors UPS, Johnson & Johnson and Unilever, who everyday make a commitment to effective leadership within their communities, and continue to provide the support necessary to assist BEEP in developing future leaders. We thank all of our sponsors, and visiting professors for continually making the case for effective leadership. For being strong role models and examples in excellence for our students. For going above and beyond, and for being audacious in every way. Most of all, we thank you for joining us for this very necessary leadership summit. BEEP 2011 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The National Urban League’s Black Executive Exchange Program is grateful to all our investors for their invaluable financial support of the 42nd Anniversary BEEP Leadership Conference, “BEEP 2011: The Case for Effective Leadership,” with a very special thank you to our Leadership Sponsors – UPS, Southwest Airlines and Unilever. We extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to the BEEP Executive Advisory Council for their steadfast commitment, devotion, time, energy, inspiration and for being part of the solution. A standing ovation for our Conference Co-Chairs, Dr. Danielle Robinson, DIAGEO, and Karen Price Ward, Southwest Airlines, and the conference planning committee for their hard work and leadership. Special thanks are extended to our speakers, presiders, moderators and facilitators who traveled across the country to share their invaluable insights, knowledge and experience with our conferees. Applause, applause for our host affiliate, the Central Florida Urban League, including Dr. Allie Braswell, Shellie Ann Minnis, Anthony G. Stepney and Leonard Spencer, without whom this conference would not be a success. And a resounding thanks to Michelle Molz and Casey Sofka of Visit Orlando, and the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes Resort staff, especially Manette Sy, for making our conferees feel welcome. Kudos to Maruiel Perkins-Chavis, Jimmie Paschal and Andy Chaves of Marriott, and Valeria L. Corr Hanserd of BP, who made this year’s Leadership BEEP another outstanding, lifechanging experience for our students. It is because of the efforts of others that we are able to celebrate our 42nd anniversary and to that end, we salute our National Urban League colleagues for their ongoing support, with special mention to Herman Lessard, Rhonda Spears Bell, Paul Wycisk, Wanda Jackson, Dennis Serrette, Donna Stewart, Amber Jaynes, Lynn Law, Maria McFarlane, Renee Jenkins, Michael Thompson, Yeymi Hoffmans, Kenyatta Skyles, Jacqueline Hamilton, Zuhirah Khaldun, Michelle Smith, Denise Lee, Dorothy Millines, Lillian Coakley, Everton Patrick Burke, Abdul Kamara, Isiah Hall, Dale Johnson, Fred Evans, Kenya Johnson, and Colin Allum. We did it! Yours in the Movement, BEEP Central

UPS is proud to support the National Urban League and the 2011 B.E.E.P. Leadership Conference. The heart of UPS. It’s not often you meet someone who flies jumbo jets and devotes virtually every moment of free time in service to others. From coaching and mentoring kids to assisting with the March of Dimes, Habitat for Humanity, aviation camps and his church ministries, UPS Captain Norman Seawright, Jr., is out there making a difference. What’s more, he sings a breathtaking baritone for the sheer enjoyment of others. Indeed, Captain Seawright flies high and sings out loud in all his actions. And, he is a fine example of UPS’s talented and diverse workforce. UPS, in fact, thrives on its diversity and supports minority-focused organizations that promote the cultures, ideas and well being of those they represent. It’s the right thing to do, and it’s a commitment that’s as much a part of UPS as our brown trucks. Diversity: at the heart of UPS. community.ups.com

Lo Name Here -
We believe that when you say something, people should be able to believe it. So when we say our burgers are 100% USDA inspected beef, it’s because they are. And when we say a person can start out on a restaurant crew and end up owning their own restaurant, it’s because more than 50% of our owner/operators came up the same way. So did more than 75% of our restaurant managers and many of our corporate staff. And when we say we’re committed to diversity in hiring, what we actually mean is that we’re an industry leader, from our restaurants to our supplier networks to our owners. To be the best company we can, we have to create the best opportunities. And we’d like to believe that some of the best ones around, are right here.
