IT’S HOT IN HERE.... Hola, Southwest! If I have not said it before, my name is Banna Tesfay, and I am extremely honored to serve you as your Southwest CKI District Governor for the 20162017 year! What’s ‘Hot Stuff’, you might ask? ‘Hot Stuff’ is a newsletter put out by the Governor, keeping our members updated on the district board, events, changes that might effect you, and just general updates of what I’m doing as your governor. When I ran, one of the platforms I stressed was direct communication from me to our general members, and I plan to uphold that. AUTISM SELF ADVOCACY NETWORK
At their District Officer Training Conference, your district board voted to change lives through service. After a detailed discussion, they were able to support a vote towards a District Project; something our district will collectively work with through the year to support, aid, and raise funds and awareness for. Along with that, they event decided on a Governor’s project: something I am so excited to support. I chose this project as a personal goal, and will give the district ideas and incentives to raise funds, and even think of a creative bounty for DCON. March of Dimes is this year’s District Project. MoD is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. Founded in 1938, their mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Autism Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN) seeks to advance the principles of the disability rights movement with regard to autism and mental disabilities. ASAN believes that the goal of advocacy should be a world in which developmentally disabled people enjoy the same access, rights, and opportunities as all other citizens. FROM THE DESERT TO THE MOUNTAINS As your Governor, I get the amazing opportunity to travel a whole lot in order to create and strengthen connections to our family. These past three months, I think I’ve eaten one to many airplane meals and has spent quite a bit on gas. But, all in great company! This past weekend, the Southwest Key Club board so kindly invited me to attend their Summer Board meeting in Prescott, AZ. While it was so nice to get away and relax and a camp for a few days, it was even nicer to witness the true commitment and hard work these students put into what they do. I mean, really. High school students, and I watched them do Parli Pro better than I ever could. While me and Anika cooked a mean chili and pancakes, these students were setting the foundation for what I can only see as an unforgettable year of service. I hope to watch them grow as leaders through my term, as well as my amazing counterpart Alisa.
