CKI Mission “Developing college and university students into a global network of responsible citizens and leaders with a lifelong commitment to service”

a word from your

Hey Ponies! Just like that our second month together has come and gone! Thus far, it has truly been amazing to see all of the experiences Southwest District CKI has to offer. The passion, dedication to service, and boundless leadership everyone in our district possesses is truly astounding, and I have loved every chance I’ve had to document it all! Moving forward, I am excited to continue recording our time together as a District! Noting that, if anyone has any cool project stories or outstanding members to recognize, please let me know! I would love to feature the great accomplishments of all of our clubs in bulletins and social media. Otherwise, have a great month, Southwest! It’s time to tackle crazy things like CKIx and Summer!

4 Hey Southwest! I hope you all have been enjoying your summer so far, and that you’ve been able to rest and take a break! I am excited to announce that the St. Baldrick’s Foundation will be our district project for the year! The St. Baldrick’s Foundation aims to raise both awareness of pediatric cancer and funds for pediatric cancer research. I have been involved in cancer research for the past four years, and I have seen the devastating effects pediatric cancer can have on kids, families, and communities. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation represents an incredible opportunity to help find therapies to improve the lives of children fighting pediatric cancer, as well to help find cures and prevention methods so no child has to fight cancer again. This year, I hope that we as a district can raise $5,000 (or more!) for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and I will be shaving my head if we reach that goal as part of a Brave the Shave event. CKIx is coming up soon! If you aren’t able to attend CKIx, but want to make your voice heard, be sure to contact your club presidents so we can inform our delegates. Check out the proposed amendment as part of the delegate packet here: http:// www.circlek.org/Libraries/CKIx/Delegates_Packet_2017_1.sflb.ashx , and candidate literature here: http://www.circlek.org/Libraries/CKIx/2017-18_Candidate_Literature_1.sflb.ashx . Want a chance to meet some our Kiwanis Family counterparts? Interested in learning more about what’s going on in the district? Attend the Southwest District Kiwanis Convention! It will occur August 4th-6th at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel, and is $79 for CKI members to attend with a coupon code. There will also be a comedy show the night before at 7 PM benefiting the Southwest District Kiwanis Foundation, so be sure to check that out! Find out more about the convention here: http://swdkiwanis.org/(S(q35qmn55ulnrshjfeswr3y55))/ Page/35621 . If you are interested in attending, please e-mail me at lbelmon1@asu.edu . Interested in discussing ideas for the district? Have questions about St. Baldrick’s and how you can get involved? Just want to chat? The next governor’s fireside chat will be Sunday, June 25th at 7:30 pm AZ time! It will be held via Google Hangouts at the following link https://hangouts.google.com/hangouts/_/asu.edu/firesidechat . Come to share ideas, ask questions, or just chat with me! I am looking forward to seeing you there! If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas or if you just want to say hi, feel free to contact me at any time!

Stay Spicy, Southwest! Laura Belmont

K-FAMILY KATCH

On June 2-5, Southwest District Key Club joined SWD Kiwanis and SWD CKI at Kamp Kiwanis in New Mexico to train the incoming board. Over the weekend, Key Clubbers were able to work out plans for next year, bond as a board, and interact with K -Family Counterparts with fun photos!

A few weeks ago the incoming SWD Kiwanis Board met up with CKI and Key Club for Lieutenant Governor Training. During this weekend, Governor-Elect Ed Verburg trained his upcoming LTG Class and prepared them to effectively serve the mighty Southwest District!

superstars RMD CKI has a unique District Fundraising Program—the Lucky 7! This campaign is designed to help raise money for RMD CKI. Ideally, Kiwanis clubs donate an amount with the number 7 in it (per tradition) and Kiwanis Clubs that donate at least $177 receive a banner patch!

On Saturday, June 2 UCR Circle K hosted a Personal Health/Fitness Convention called “Health is Wealth.” This event was created to promote the CNH District Service Initiative: Personal Health and helped people learn ways to relieve stress and become healthier. The event featured several activities, games, and free food!

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

On May 7, UNM CKI volunteered at Run for the Zoo, where they worked at the water station and handed out water to runners and walkers during the race. Specifically, they worked during the half marathon. Overall, the club enjoyed working together while Albuquerque celebrated physical exercise.

During DOTC on June 2-4, the SWD CKI Board was able to help edge a sidewalk at Kamp Kiwanis. Overall, it was a great way to thank Kamp Kiwanis while brushing up on our construction skills!

Students Team Up To Fight Hunger (STUFH) is a U.S. National non-profit organization that aims to feed those in need. It accomplishes this through collecting food on college campuses and connect college students to their less fortunate neighbors through building a sense of community.

St. Baldrick’s foundation works with leading pediatric oncologists to fund research towards curing childhood cancer. The 2017-2018 SWD CKI Board selected this as our District Project as it is a new CKI Service Project and is special to Governor Laura Belmont. Now, we are raising money as a District to see members “Brave the Shave” at DCon 2018! This year, I hope that we as a district can raise $5,000 (or more!) for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and I will be shaving my head if we reach that goal as part of a Brave the Shave event.

WHY MICHAEL ZIMMERMAN HATES TUCSON

Tucson, Arizona (better known to many as the Dirty T) is a Southwest District CKI hotspot. The city has some of the best Mexican food in the U.S., beautiful hiking trails, and a tight-knit community. Despite this, Michael Zimmerman, one of SWD CKI’s LTGs, has several bones to pick with the city dubbed “the Old Pueblo.” These include the boring drivers (“they are so slow, they do nothing!”), the horrible roads, the complete lack of Thai food and Dutch Bros, and most importantly, the fact that nobody in Tucson seems to think Michael is famous. However, in spite of these flaws Michael is still grateful for the opportunity to live in a cultural hub here in the Southwest District, where he is able to serve alongside the rest of the SWD CKI Board.

U of A | MIRABELLA ANGEL Mirabella has been a great member of U of A CKI this past year. Recently, she donated materials to a U of A CKI Fundraiser through Savers Thrift Store. Although we are sad to see her go, we are thrilled over her graduation and look forward to her bright future!

GCU | MEGAN MONTOYA Even as one of our newest members of the year, Megan has participated in numerous events and provided lots of great ideas for next year. Additionally, she is our new bulletin editor and we look forward to working with her.

GCU | CESSNA FERNANDEZ Cessna has been such a great member this past year, and it is no doubt that she will bring her positivity once again into this upcoming year. Not only does she work hard at what she does, but she works with grace and finishes everything needed to be accomplished with strength. She has been more than an amazing help in her role as a secretary and as a member. Thank you so much Cessna, we appreciate you!
