of Sweden, the contrasts are as beautiful as they are numerous. Sunshine 24 hours a day, spreading its warm light over mountains, flora, fauna and waterways. This is the Land of the Midnight Sun. Late nights and excursions at all hours of the day are a very tempting prospect. We have adventure and activities here offering all the elements of the four seasons even though the calendar indicates there should be no snow on the ground. Imagine skiing on Midsummer’s Eve up in the mountains, followed by fishing along the river in the vibrant green valley. Then hiking along an alpine mountain trail where lots of saxifrage and anemone varieties grow wild outside 2

our tent when we stop for the night. Later on when the summer gives way to autumn the countryside glows red, yellow and orange. This is also the time that autumn hunting starts in the mountains, just beneath the snow-clad peaks. Seductive contrasts which are truly memorable. We see the midnight sun in Kiruna between late May and mid-July, and we enjoy the light and live our lives outdoors as much as we can. We roast reindeer meat over open fires, steer boats through swirling rapids and hike along the unique King’s Trail. We have both the mining industry and a spaceport for anyone interested in high-tech things. High and deep – from Kebnekaise, the DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND   KI RU NA

highest mountain in Sweden, to a mine a thousand metres below ground, the contrasts continue. Kiruna is undergoing an exciting transformation. The entire town is about to relocate because the mine and ore deposits are extending beneath the town centre. But our warm welcome and wild countryside surrounding the town will still be here to greet you, just as they’ve always done. We have amazing local produce, culture and experiences. Welcome to Kiruna – come and share our everyday lives, which are far from ordinary.

HEADING OUT INTO THE COUNTRYSIDE

h i k i n g i s m u lt i d i m e n s i o na l . It offers something for your mind, and your body. If you hike along the King’s Trail in northernmost Swedish Lapland, you’ll see some of the most beautiful things Sweden has to offer. Clear lakes where you can see deep, deep down, rivers and streams with water so clean that you can just fill up your cup and drink. Flora that caused Carl Linnaeus, no less, to rejoice during his Expedition to Lapland in 1732. We have tall mountains here with snow-encrusted peaks providing a constant reminder of just how far north you are. And we have deep valleys where reindeer graze while eagles circle freely high above. We have hiking for everyone; people who want to enjoy stretching their legs for a few hours along clearly marked routes, to advanced weekly hikes where you bring your own tent through trackless terrain. The backdrop to your adventure is powerful and varied – the fertile national park of Abisko and the Kebnekaise mountain range. If you fancy a challenge, take this opportunity to climb the highest mountain in Sweden, with or without a guide. And all under the light of the never-ending midnight sun, which you can experience in many ways – but the world-famous Aurora Sky Station, with views over both Lapporten and the 70-kilometre Torneträsk lake, is perhaps best of all. Round off your experience with a local meal on Nuolja mountain. Head out on a hike which gets your legs working while your head takes a break and your soul floats freely. Maybe you could enjoy an overnight stay at one of the STF mountain huts, set out at convenient distances from one another along the hiking trails. At some of the huts, provisions are available and you can take a wonderful, invigorating sauna.

Book a professional guide and get more from your mountain trip. They are very familiar with the countryside, the weather and all those fabulous little places that are so hard to find for the uninitiated. You might even make some new friends from other parts of the world in your hiking group. Find local guides on pages 26–27. 4

Fabulous day trips to enjoy on your own There are some fabulous trips that you can enjoy on your own, and you can choose any kind of length. The Midnight Sun Trail on Luossavaara mountain on the outskirts of Kiruna is beautiful, with its views of both the mining town and the mountain range. Hiking from Björkliden to Låktatjåkko Mountain Lodge is another gem – or why not head out to the lake Rissajaure, one of the clearest lakes in Sweden, which is right in the middle of the beautiful and mystical valley of Kärkevagge.

Tips for safe mountain hiking

Unique light for photography Photographers Anette Niia and Ylva Sarri run Scandinavian Photo Adventures, which offers genuine adventures involving photography, nature and Sámi culture in the forests and mountains of Kiruna.   Peter Rosén is a photographer and has been running LapplandMedia & PhotoAdventures for 19 years.   “I want my images to portray the things I love the most – the unique light and the Northern Lights, which add an extra dimension to the countryside up here.”   Peter offers photography courses on behalf of Canon, focusing on nature, light and Sámi culture in Abisko and Kiruna.   Chad Blakley is a photographer specialising in the Northern Lights and owner of the companies Lights over Lapland and Visit Abisko. Chad is based in Abisko and offers guided tours and photography courses.   “If you’re interested in fine-tuning your skills as a photographer and learning the fine details of astrophotography and photography in low light, we have just the course for you.”

1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT. Choose light-

Björkliden, photo: Markus Alatalo

weight clothing which will protect you from the elements and breathe when you get hot. Layer your clothes so that you can adapt easily to the weather. Good equipment needn’t cost the earth, and a rucksack packed properly shouldn’t be too heavy. Checklists showing suitable equipment can be found at www.fjallsakerhetsradet.se/eng

2. LET SOMEONE KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING AND WHAT TIME YOU THINK YOU’LL BE BACK. It’s important to make sure someone knows your planned route and when you’re expecting to be back. Tell someone who can raise the alarm if you don’t return as planned.

3. ADAPT YOUR TRIP ACCORDING TO THE WEATHER. The weather can change quickly in the

mountains. Check local weather forecasts on the radio, or at www.smhi.se/en. Weather services are also available as apps for mobile phones. Always respect mountain weather warnings issued.

4. FOLLOW MARKED TRAILS. There are hundreds of

kilometres of marked trails in the mountains, with distance markers, cabins where you can spend the night and assistance phones. Follow the trails – this will make it easier for you to find your way about, and it’s safer in case you need help for any reason. Remember, red crosses indicate winter trails which aren’t always appropriate to follow in summer.

5. TAKE A MAP AND COMPASS WITH YOU.

Make sure your map is up to date. The compass will mainly be needed when you’re off the marked trails, and you’ll need how to use your compass, too. Use GPS if you like, but remember that batteries discharge quickly when cold.

6. ASK EXPERIENCED PEOPLE FOR ADVICE.

People who often spend time in the mountains can give you vital information. Get in touch with them and ask questions about routes, water levels, bridges and anything else that might make your planning easier. There are local mountain safety committees who know all kinds of things about their local mountains.

THE NAVVY ROAD

Cycle, hike or run along the old construction routes used by the navvies. These run from tall mountains via deep valleys and all the way down to the fjords of Norway. Navvies began building the railway known as Malmbanan, the Iron Ore Line, more than a century ago. This paved the way for the hospitality industry, and nowadays ore is still transported by rail from Kiruna to the ore port in Narvik in Norway. The Svarta Björn (Black Bear) hike is a popular tradition where people pay tribute to the legendary navvy cook with a hike along the route the navvies used. This route offers comfortable accommodation and places where you can enjoy tasty food. 5

EXCITING, WET, AND OUT OF THE ORDINARY

Dogsledding without snow Mikael Forsén runs the Kiruna Nature company, which offers trips with teams of dogs in summer. You can get to know the happy, friendly dogs here and find out more about them. The dogs love to work and start howling and barking eagerly before suddenly falling silent when they’re told to start running. We’ll travel on a sled behind team of 16 keen dogs, and the 8 km trip comes to an end with fireside refreshments on the banks of the Kalix River.   “People really enjoy our trips because they offer genuine experiences where you get really up close and personal with animals and nature in an authentic and respectful way, and I think that’s important,” says Mikael.   The company also offers fishing trips in flowing water that are suitable for both beginners and experienced anglers.

Vast fishing waters

6

You have almost infinite possibilities in the Kiruna region if you enjoy fishing: rushing streams, tempting trout lakes, huge grayling waters, perfect pike waters and clear salmon rivers. The ancient taiga forest can be found between coastal mountains, a pine forest providing all kinds of fishing waters to explore.   One of the advantages of the area is that there are plenty of forgotten places that are just sitting and waiting for you to visit. Book a flight to Råstojaure where you can enjoy some exclusive trout fishing, or maybe you’d be happy with just

travelling a few kilometres outside central Kiruna and settling down with your fishing rod on the banks of a river.   The mountain region has always attracted anglers. The romance, seclusion and silence are just some of the temptations that have brought us to the most barren parts of our country. (Extract from Chronicle by Gunnar Westrin.)   You can buy fishing licences at Kiruna Lapland Tourist Office and get more tips on good fishing waters, as well as guides who can help you with organising the best fishing trips.

mean light 24 hours a day in a wonderful mix of blossoming summer meadows, pines in the taiga forest and windswept saxophone birches*. A delight for all the senses, in lots of different colours. From the late spring the buds burst and everything starts to turn green, to mid summer when the midnight sun makes the waters of the river glitter and gleam. And in autumn the crisp, cool air causes the leaves on the trees explode in a riot of colour. Along with all this, we add spice to life with enjoyable and exciting activities. Slow paced, when you want to just enjoy some peace and quiet and relax, or fast paced when you want to get the adrenaline pumping or perhaps experience something you’ve never tried before. An adventure means so many different things. Putting on your sunglasses and feeling the rays of the sun warming your face at midnight is quite the adventure. Sitting in a rubber dinghy as you head down the swirling rapids of the river will leave your tummy doing somersaults before we land on the bank to cook some fish. Adventures such as visiting the caves of Björkliden or glacier hiking

on Kebnekaise don’t normally leave many people unmoved. Maybe you could visit Nutti Sámi Siida, where you have the opportunity to learn more about the Sámi culture, feed the reindeer and enjoy boiled coffee by the banks of the Torne River. Or experience even Sweden’s most spectacular golf course, climbing, high rope course, horse riding and ice sculpting. And maybe some of the best fishing waters in the world into the bargain. If adventure and experiences are your thing, you’ll find a huge list of possibilities here.

*) SAXOPHONE BIRCHES The small, windswept birches on the slopes of the mountain stand hunched. These are known popularly as “saxophone birches”, because their shape is very reminiscent of saxophones. These stooping birches are a clear indicator from Mother Nature that you’re in the far north and on high altitude.

Exciting times centring on the Torne River

Fun for the whole family There are lots of activities that are ideal for younger guests as well. Here are just a few of them: • “Lämmelklubben”, The Lemming Club, in Björkliden is one way for children to get a break from their parents and discover all the delights of the mountain world together with other children of the same age. • You can contact the Tourist Office to book a trip down into the biggest underground iron ore mine in the world – guaranteed excitement! • You can enjoy refreshments and buy Sámi handicrafts at Nutti Sámi Siida in Jukkasjärvi, and also feed and stroke reindeer grazing in an enclosure. • How do you fancy a dip in Sweden’s most northerly heated outdoor pool? As well as the swimming facilities and kids’ pool, there’s a kiosk and minigolf at Camp Ripan.

Of course, you simply have to create your own ice sculpture when you visit ICEHOTEL, so come on – give your creativity free rein! You can also visit the ice warehouse, where next winter’s hotel is sitting and waiting – in the form of thousands of blocks of ice. Or try cycling through the forest and countryside in the area around Jukkasjärvi – great adventure in the almost untouched countryside along forest paths and roads. ICEHOTEL, photo: Markus Alatalo

Transformation of Kiruna A NEW TOWN EMERGING

is attracting attention both in Sweden and elsewhere – never before has such a large community undergone this kind of transformation. The town has to be moved because the mineworks are deforming the land. As a result, parts of Kiruna have to be rebuilt elsewhere. Kiruna as a community came into being in the early 20th century when mining began in earnest. The community was made up of three different areas when Kiruna was established. The buildings were centred on the low mountain of Haukivaara, which had a relatively good local climate and was situated in a strategic location between the two mining mountains of Luossavaara and Kiirunavaara. Communications in those days required people to live near to where they worked. Kiruna was granted a town charter in 1948, and the town began to expand in the 1940s as well. The town plan was the first of its kind to be established in the Nordic countries according to continental concepts. Instead of having a traditional grid plan, the Kiruna town plan is designed organically and adapted according to the terrain. The new Kiruna will now be taking shape, so everyone’s sights are set on the future. This community will meet t h e t r a n s f o r m at i o n o f k i ru na

people’s everyday needs, just as it’s always done. Everything is focused on ensuring that the town and mining industry can coexist in harmony. That was how it was in the beginning, and this is how it continues to be now that mining company LKAB, employing around 4,000 staff in 15 or so countries, is continuing to drive the business forward. The transformation of the town has now embarked upon an operational phase in which plans and decisions will be put into practice. Two major architectural competitions have taken place; one for the new town centre and one for a new town hall. The development plan for the future town centre is complete, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Kiruna town hall has taken place. The aim is for the new town centre, with a shopping street, to be completed within five years. The new Kiruna will be built for a variety of people. The people who already live here have to feel at home, and returning residents as well as new residents must feel welcome. Find out more about the transformation of Kiruna at: www.kiruna.se/Stadsomvandling/City-in-transformation www.lkab.com/en/Future/Urban-Transformations DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND   KI RU NA

Central hub in the new Kiruna The aim is to attempt to manifest the pride which people feel in the town by moving and preserving a number of unique buildings and constructing new ones along the same lines. The town hall, which is appreciated and frequently visited by the locals, can’t be moved – and that’s why a new town hall is being built in Kiruna.   Architects from all over the world were invited to take part in an architectural competition to design a new town centre for Kiruna, and a winning proposal has been selected. 56 teams of architects from all over the world entered this competition to design a new town hall. The aim of the competition was to come up with a high-quality proposal to use as a basis for a new town hall to build in the new centre of Kiruna.   The new town hall is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

EXPERIENCE TRANSFORMATION OF A TOWN

There are two exhibitions on the transformation of the town: LKAB’s exhibition is on display at the Folkets Hus, next to the tourist office in Kiruna, and there’s another in the town hall in Kiruna. You can view and follow the transformation of the town there and see how the mine is spreading underground and the buildings above have to be emptied. You can also go on a guided tour to find out more about how Kiruna will undergo this exciting transformation – both Camp Ripan and Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården are organising tours.   We have some very popular guided tours for anyone who’d like to learn more about mining in the biggest underground iron ore mine in the world. Experience the contrast between midnight sun and absolute darkness several hundred metres below the ground. We take a coach directly from the tourist office and drive straight down into the mountain and to the show mine at LKAB’s Visitor Centre, 540 metres below ground. This guide explains all about modern mining and how it can persuade an entire town to relocate.

The guides will look after you in the exhibition mine.

The Esrange Space Center is situated just over 40 km north-east of Kiruna. SSC (Swedish Space Corporation) launches sounding rockets and stratospheric balloons for research purposes from here. There’s also a major station for communication with satellites here. The base isn’t open to the public, but there’s a small visitor’s centre which presents activities at Esrange and Swedish space-related work. Open daily from June 2015.

YOUNG TOWN WITH DYNAMIC CULTURAL HERITAGE

10

The memory of the navvies and people who worked on the railway more than a century ago lives on. Svarta Björn (Black Bear) in particular, who cooked for the navvies, is remembered and celebrated every year with a walk along the Navvy Road. Architecture, art and design have been and continue to be an important theme in Kiruna – buildings designed by Ralph Erskine, Sámi knives as utility items, but also works of art and ice art at the world-famous ICEHOTEL. Kiruna is a cultural palette and a work of art with lots of beautiful colours. Sara Björne from Kiruna designed the gown for Alice Bah Kuhnke, Minister for Culture and Democracy, for the Nobel banquet in 2014. One example of how tradition meets the present in the hands of young designers.

Photo: Sara Björne

rich in culture, and this is how things have been since the town was founded just over a century ago. A vivid Sámi culture, unique art treasures and the hard work of the railway navvies still serve as important elements for both industry and communications. The culture of the Torne River Valley is also a clearly apparent part of cultural life in Kiruna. Kiruna is part of Sápmi and has been home to Sámi people for many generations. The Swedish name Kiruna is derived from the Sámi word “Giron”, which means “grouse”. Sámi place names explain Sámi history and can be viewed as pieces in the puzzle of an area. They’re often linked with the appearance of the terrain and the value of the location in terms of livelihood. Navvies began building Malmbanan, the Iron Ore Line, more than a century ago – around 500 kilometres of rails were laid with their bare hands. The hard work was necessary for the development of mining, and the navvies worked under strict time pressure and simple conditions. The railway also paved the way for the hospitality industry in respect of Sweden’s most northerly mountains, and nowadays ore is still transported by rail from Kiruna to the ore port in Narvik. k i ru na i s a t ow n

Welcome to Sápmi – the Land of the Sámi

Photo: Carl-Johan Utsi

Several cultures meet in the Kiruna region. The Sámi language which dominates here is Northern Sámi, and many Sámi people are working hard to ensure that their culture is a clear and self-evident part of the community. Reindeer herding is a strong bearer of culture, but it’s by no means the main job of all Sámi people. It’s more common for whole families to help out with major events such as calf branding. Handicrafts, Sámi Duodji, are also an important part of Sámi culture and reflect life in close harmony with nature. As a visitor to the region, you can experience and learn more about the Sámi culture with the Sámi companies and guides who work in the hospitality industry.   The Sámi people are one of the world’s indigenous peoples, and for millennia they’ve lived close to nature. Although the Sámi lifestyle has developed over the years, their traditions and culture are still very much alive.   There are eight Sámi communities in Kiruna. A Sámi community is an economic association, and their members are Sámi people who herd reindeer within the community area. The activities of the Sámi communities are regulated by the Reindeer Husbandry Act.

Summer in Sápmi – from a reindeer herder’s perspective Summer, gæssi, is the time when reindeer herders brand their calves. The calves born in early spring, in May, are now to be branded so that people know who they belong to. This is a fabulous, exciting job. Gæssi is the warmest season, which is why calf branding often takes place under the midnight sun, during the coolest part of the day. The reindeer are often driven with dogs or a helicopter down to the reindeer enclosure in the forest, where they’re gathered together, separated and branded. After branding, the calves and adult reindeer are let loose. They often run back to the mountain, where there are fewer mosquitoes, and they can carry on with their lives on their verdant summer pastures.

Ateljénord in central Kiruna provides a range of local crafts, offering everything from utility goods to unique works of art. Ateljénord is made up of craft professionals from the Kiruna region. They work with arts and crafts using various materials such as wood, gold, silver, textiles, reindeer skin, forging, watercolours and glass.   Another town centre shop selling authentic crafts is the venerable Carl Wennbergs Sameslöjd, opened in 1907 by Franz Gustaf Wennberg as a grocery in the mining town of Kiruna. The Sámi people often paid for their goods with their own crafts, such as knives and cups. The shop began to sell more and more Sámi crafts over time, until it eventually became a specialist shop selling Sámi arts and crafts.   At the tourist office, you’ll find the shop of legendary photographer Sven

Hörnell, where you can buy several of his famous photos and other local arts and crafts as well. Take the opportunity to watch their gorgeous slideshow, which you can book in the shop.   In Jukkasjärvi, you’ll find Nutti Sámi Siida in the old Sámi marketplace that gave rise to the village of Jukkasjärvi. Reindeer graze here, and there are exhibitions and information all about the Sámi culture and lifestyle. There’s a craft area and shop in the wooden hut where traditional handicrafts are on display, including reindeer horns and reindeer skins. A range of both traditional and modern Sámi crafts and souvenirs are on sale here.   You’ll find Nikkaluokta Sarri’s shop at the foot of Kebnekaise, where the road ends. This shop sells genuine Sámi crafts dating back through the history of Sápmi.

Experiences

DURING THE COLOURFUL SEASON

i t ’ s h a r d n o t t o n o t i c e when summer starts to give way to autumn. The air becomes cooler and the forests and mountain slopes are painted in dramatic colours. The scents change, and unripe berries turn into fruit bursting with flavour thanks to their intensive ripening under the midnight sun. Many people reckon this is the best time to be out in the forest and countryside. Besides the riches offered in the form of lingonberries, blueberries and cloudberries, the gold of the marsh, a peculiar calmness settles over the countryside. Maybe it’s because everything is preparing to hibernate. Chilly nights alternate with days when you can still feel the sun on your skin. And you’re sure to admire the splendour of nature just a little bit more when you know this might be your last chance to hike from cabin to cabin on the trail or ride your bike outdoors. 12

There’s a major chance that you’ll experience the strongest, most beautiful Northern Lights in autumn. When the darkness has begun to grow, before the white snow settles on the ground and the cold gradually begins to creep back into this area 200 km above the Arctic Circle, the Northern Lights and stars take over the heavens. Being out and hiking in the high mountains where there’s absolutely no artificial light at all, or taking a chairlift up to the Aurora Sky Station on Nuolja mountain in Abisko under the Northern Lights on an evening in autumn is an experience you’ll never forget. Or maybe you’ll be out in the forest, sitting beside a fire on the banks of the river. No matter where you watch the show from, seeing the Northern Lights is a moving experience – as it’s been since time immemorial. DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND   KI RU NA

Autumn hunting

Sustainable guiding

Photo: Nutti Sámi Siida

There are talented hunting guides in the Kiruna region who can organise fantastic trips out into the mountains and forests. Our huge mountain region above the cultivation line offers almost unlimited opportunities for grouse hunting. You can reach most places quickly and safely by helicopter, for instance. We have both grouse and ptarmigan in the region. Ptarmigan are found mostly in the upland terrain up in the mountain massifs. Grouse are most prevalent on the tundra-like mountain moors, in the brushland along streams and the edges of lakes.

Guide B-O is an outdoor company offering activities such as whitewater rafting, canoeing, hunting and fishing.   “We have a number of schemes which are included in Nature’s Best, which is a groundbreaking quality label for responsible experience tourism in the countryside in Sweden. This is what’s often referred to internationally as ecotourism,” says B-O Johansson, owner of the company.   Exclusive fly fishing takes place using rubber dinghies for transport. Trips can be booked to the Kaitum River in partnership with Tjuonajokk Wilderness Camp, as well as trips to the Lainio and Kalix Rivers. You’ll be fishing for grayling, trout, salmon and charr.   “We offer the option of special, customised trips on certain sections of the river,” says B-O.   Guide B-O also offers ptarmigan hunting trips into the mountains.

Abisko in watercolours

Photo: Lars Holm

No other place in the mountains is associated with painting in quite the same way as Abisko. Magnificent views combined with fantastic light have made this area famous for its artistic qualities. In the early 20th century, Abisko was a hub for much of the Swedish art elite. When STF invites people to a one-week watercolour course, Lars Holm from Gerlesborgsskolan, one of Sweden’s most popular watercolour teachers, is in charge. This course will teach you more about the distinctive nature of painting watercolours, no matter what level you’re at.

Autumn visits to a Sámi camp

Encounter the Northern Lights Kiruna Aurora Tours provides Northern Lights tours to Abisko – “The village of the Northern Lights” – which is one of the best places in the world to see the lights. You’ll be picked up from your accommodation before we head out on the hunt for the Northern Lights. We’ll stop off at some beautiful places along the way which are ideal for gazing heavenwards. We’ll be guided by the weather, and depending on the conditions your guide might carry on past Abisko and head towards the Norwegian border to give you the best possible chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

Next to the church in Jukkasjärvi, you’ll find Nutti Sámi Siida – Sámi camp. And this is where you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with reindeer, the proud companions of the Sámi people, when you go into the enclosure to feed them. At the same time, you’ll learn more about the Sámi, the indigenous population of Sápmi, and their past and present lifestyle. The camp also offers various outdoor exhibitions.

Natural temptations WELCOME TO THE TABLE

on what the forests and mountains have to offer, and we’re very proud to invite guests to eat at our table. We have game birds, berries ripened under the midnight sun of summer, fish that have swum in clean waters, mountain herbs and, not least, game – we recommend reindeer in particular. The taste of Swedish Lapland will add a little extra spice to your visit and provide unforgettable memories. The way in which food is prepared and enjoyed is also an experience and an adventure. Suovas, lightly smoked reindeer, tastes absolutely incredible when cooked over an open fire out in the forest. Juniper berries from the forest and pressed almond potatoes from the Torne River Valley are ideal accompaniments. Or how about arctic char which you’ve caught yourself and grilled over glowing embers at a camp up in the mountain, under the midnight sun, listening to the rushing river? An incredibly tasty dish. We like combining nature and food in the Kiruna region, and we do it often. The town centre offers some real gems to delight both the mind and the tastebuds. Café Hjalmar at Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården, the first building in Kiruna, offers drinks and freshly baked pastries served in the classical way. Landströms serves everything according to season and availability, such as delicious breast of grouse or other local favourites. Their outdoor seating is extremely popular on warm summer days. Or how about a “world champion pizza” at Pizzeria Palladium? Their reindeer pizza came first in the world championships for pizza makers. We offer all kinds of fine ingredients to suit all tastes. Bon appétit! w e l i v e v e ry w e l l

Låkta waffle

“You have to hike miles to enjoy these tasty waffles, but it’s worth every single one of them.”   Come here, relax in front of the fire in the big cabin and enjoy the classic Låkta waffle with cloudberry jam and cream. Light lunches are served during the day, and three-course meals in the evenings. 16

Most of the ingredients are local, and each dish comes with a tale of its own – you can find out where the reindeer grazed and where the fish was caught. The menu follows the seasons – all eight of them, according to the ancient Sámi traditions. The food is prepared with care according to ancient recipes spiced up with fresh ideas and influences from various parts of the world.

Tasty mountain food

Restaurant Lapporten,

Two popular restaurants run by STF and in beautiful locations in the heart of the mountain world of Kiruna are Restaurant Kungsleden and Elsa’s Kitchen. Restaurant Kungsleden can be found at the mountain station in Abisko. The mountain station is in the middle of a national park, and sustainability work is fundamental here. This means they serve organic food. They use local ingredients that taste great and demonstrate a sense of responsibility for the beautiful countryside. At Elsa’s Kitchen at Kebnekaise Mountain Station, which was named after Elsa Göransson who worked there for nearly 30 years, Elsa’s great interest in mountains and people lives on. She created a pleasant oasis in the Lapland mountain world and today, more than 50 years later, people are still inspired by the cosiness and conviviality surrounding mealtimes, just as they were back then.

Restaurant Ebbes Kök in Katterjokk serves food and drink with fantastic views over the mountains, with Vassitjåkka mountain in the foreground and Vassijaure lake extending out towards the north. How about fresh pasta with creamy suovas (lightly smoked reindeer steak), chanterelles and lingonberries? 17

“Our choices reflect respect for the environment in everything, from the purchasing of interior fittings and ingredients in the restaurant to the choice of companies to work with,” says Frida Lind-Oja at Camp Ripan. “In 2011, our restaurant was awarded the Slow Food Sápmi label, and in February this year we were awarded the Swan label as well. We’re really proud of this. In our opinion, it goes without saying that we should work to promote a sustainable society by choosing local produce and working with local contractors.”

ISO1400, Slow Food Sápmi

“Development which is sustainable in the long term is a natural element of Sámi trades. Nikkaluokta Sarri strives to keep the village and mountains around us clean and undisturbed. We want to pass on knowledge in our local area to let mountain guests know they should continue to care for nature and the mountains. Restaurang Skáidi has also received a diploma from Slow Food Sápmi, which appreciates locally produced, fair and clean food,” says Anna Sarri.

4 Nutti Sámi Siida:

Nature’s Best, Sápmi Experience

“Our visitors encounter and learn about Sámi culture and reindeer herding directly from source, i.e. from our Sámi hosts, who tell them all about the only indigenous people of Europe and the delicate ecosystem that we’re all part of. Everything we do ties in with the concepts of sustainability and ethics involved in the holistic approach of the Sámi people. Not leaving traces when we move around in the countryside, not disrupting wildlife and nature and respecting all living things are the messages we pass on both internally and to our guests,” says Katja Bechtloff, Sales & Booking Manager at Nutti Sámi Siida.

5 Ofelaš Islandshästar & Guideservice:

Nature’s Best

“We aim to welcome visitors to our part of Sápmi with emphasis on animals, nature and culture,” says Kerstin Nilsson at Ofelaš. “Taking a sustainable, long-term approach is part of our heritage.” 20

6 Scandic Ferrum: The Swan

“Back in 1993, Scandic began developing what’s now the travel industry’s leading sustainability programme. We’re extremely proud of this!” says Sara Johansson, Acting General Manager at Hotell Scandic Ferrum. “A healthy, eco-friendly approach and social aspects are natural elements of what we do. Our aim is to help promote a sustainable society. We have 130 eco-labelled hotels in total and have been working on eliminating our fossil-based carbon dioxide emissions since 2007.”

7 STF Abisko Mountain Station:

Welcome to Sweden’s northernmost destination! In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up by the Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling northern lights in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days without night under the midnight sun. In the east – a 300-km coastal stretch facing the world’s largest brackish water archipelago, with thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique produce. In the west – vast mountains, brooks with water so clean you can drink from them and lots of adventures around the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and river valleys from Skellefte River in the south to Torne River in the north-east, all with their unique distinctive characteristics to offer. Traditions and cultures are strong here, and love of nature is even stronger. This is our everyday-life, and we invite you to share it with us. www.swedishlapland.com
