The town even has a mountain of its own, not far from the town centre, the beloved Dundret. Gällivare is famous for being blessed with midnight sunlight during summer – full of energy and life. All kinds of hikers come here to walk trails of varying length and difficulty, looking for new experiences in the Arctic environment. Explore the contrast between early summer with the midnight sun and late summer when the dusk comes back but days are still long, warm and light.

By the way, did you know that Gällivare is a mining community? The mining company LKAB have mined for iron ore since the late 19th century and the community always changes and develops in symbiosis with the mine. We understand that you might raise your eyebrows when you encounter a house on wheels, but for all of us who live here, it is completely natural to move houses when the mine grows in size.

Go exploring along one of Gällivare’s three themed hiking trails, the new Dundret trail for instance. You could book to attend one of the major events happening in Gällivare this summer, such as The Midnight SunRun, the motorcycle club meeting or the summer market. You could also challenge family and friends to compete in DXR Dundret Extreme Running, a perfect motivation to stay active this summer.

A World Heritage Site is a place, locality, environment or object that is so unique that it is important for all of humanity to save and protect it. It can be natural or cultural values, sometimes both. Laponia is one such combined World Heritage Site.

The terrain is saturated with forests, glaciers, massifs and a landscape where the traces of the people that have lived there for millennia are almost undetectable. Since the last ice sheet melted, people have lived in the area that is now the Laponia World Heritage Site. Every brook, forest, hill, rock, river and lake has a name. People, animals and plants have adapted to extreme contrasts between wind and lee, bare ground and snow, light and dark, warmth and cold. Everything here is in constant motion and change.

Sámi from nine different Sámi communities live and work in Laponia today. They follow the reindeer herds on seasonal grazing treks.

Naturum Laponia – a small part of something greater

LAPONIA IS BOTH HOME AND WORKPLACE FOR THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

Naturum Laponia is the newest nature visitor centre in Sweden. It is a gateway to four national parks, two nature reserves and nine Sámi communities. You will find Naturum Laponia on the cape Viednásjárgga near Stora Sjöfallet. By the edge of the forest, where the ground lowers, a grand landscape lies ahead and the Naturum Laponia is fully visible on the shore of Lake Lána.

Come here to learn about what Laponia is, and why this area is a World Heritage Site. Get to know the mountains, the forests and the marshes. Follow the changes of the seasons and learn why the reindeer are at the centre of Sámi culture.

The Sámi are one of the world’s indigenous people, with their own parliament, flag and language. The Sámi area, Sápmi, stretches today, across four countries. In Swedish Lapland there are 32 Sámi communities that engage in reindeer herding within a given area.

For thousands of years, the Sámi have been nomads, moving along with the reindeer through the seasonal changes. Reindeer herders still live as nomads for part of the year. Traditional Sámi knowledge of how to live alongside nature without depleting its resources, has been passed down generation to generation.

Reindeer herding is the foundation of Sámi culture, but there are also many Sámi companies working with arts and crafts, design, music, tourism and Sámi food production.

On the upper floor of the train station in Gällivare, you will find Laponia Visitor Centre Gällivare/ Jiellevárre. Here is an exhibition about autumn, which is the most eventful season in Sápmi. Learn about the Sámi culture and be entranced at how the Sámi lived and worked in the area for thousands of years and how things have developed from then up to the present day.

The Visitor Centre exhibition is about a fifth of the size of the larger exhibition that can be found at naturum Laponia in Stora Sjöfallet. If you are unable to visit the Laponia World Heritage Site and the naturum to experience the magnificent mountain environment, we recommend that you visit the Laponia Visitor Centre in Gällivare.

There are also Laponia Vistor Centres in Porjus, Jokkmokk and Kvikkjokk.

Stora Sjöfallet – in the heart of the World Heritage Site Laponia In the heart of the Laponia World Heritage Site, in Stora Sjöfallets National Park with Sarek, Padjelanta and Muddus National Parks nearby, you will find Stora Sjöfallet Mountain Center. Here there are hotel, apartments, hostel, camping and conference facilities with experiences for all groups and tastes. The popular restaurant offers well thought out meals with dishes based on natural ingredients from Laponia and the local region.

The environment here is magnificent and this is a great place to enjoy the opportunities summer provides. If you meet grazing reindeer, please do not disturb them.

If possible, take a detour around the animals. If you encounter a herd, sit down and wait until they have passed. In the spring, when the reindeer cows fawn, they are particularly sensitive to disturbances. Do you have a dog with you? Make sure to keep it on a leash, and keep it from barking.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

• The practice of reindeer herding has developed over thousands of years, from the hunt for wild reindeer, to the herding of today.

• ‘Sarv’, ‘vaja’ and ‘härk’ are Swedish words loaned from the Sámi language. A ‘sarv’ is an adult male reindeer, a ‘vaja’ is a female reindeer with calves and a ‘härk’ is a castrated and tame reindeer.

• There is a Sámi saying that the reindeer belong to the wind. Nature sets the rules and the reindeer herders are never completley in control of the size of their herd.

On a roll in Gällivare Rent a bike from the Tourist Information Centre and offer mind and body a voyage of discovery along the gravel road (Grusvägen) up to Malmberget, the old mining town that had its glory days in the mid-20th century but is now being closed down. Take a closer look at the mining pit and the church that was moved out of its way piece by piece. You will see everything from simple dwellings to a castle and a church with pinnacles and towers.

Round off your bike trip with a visit to the Gällivare Museum.

The Inlandsbanan Railroad – Simple relaxation Kåkstan Shantytown in Malmberget – a journey back in time In the late 1800s, the great mining rush began here. There was plenty of work but nowhere to live. That led to the establishment of the Kåkstan shantytown in Malmberget. 100 years after it was build, it was rebuild on the very same location. Tradesmen travelled from far to help the well-paid mine workers spend their money.

Pay a visit to Kåkstan and get an authentic glimpse of how life was lived more than a hundred years ago.

The Inlandsbanan Railroad runs through the innermost parts of our beautiful country. On its way it passes picturesque towns and villages, flourishing forests and glistening waters. It runs from Kristinehamn in the south to Gällivare in the north and was built in the early 20th century to support industrial life in the northern and middle parts of Sweden. Today, the railroad only has traffic in the summer – the perfect choice when you would like to enjoy some solitude.

Kaitum chapel stands in Gällivare parish in the Diocese of Luleå and is situated about 60 km north of Gällivare. The chapel is a memorial sculpture and was built in 1964 to commemorate Dag Hammarskjöld and was designed by Jan Thurfjell. The church building is modelled on a Sami tipi tent with a shingle clad roof that extends down to the ground and has a glass covered ”smoke opening” to provide natural light. The ”Choir window” faces west towards the mountains.

Adjacent, are the Kaitum river rapids where Swedish salmon migrate 200 mil from the southern Baltic to their breeding-grounds in the mountain lakes. To the west you can see mountain peaks, birch forest, heath and upland bogs and mountains to the east boast old mountain and pine forests, streams and swamps. Sjisjkaáhpi and Goddeáhpi are among the richest bird mires in Lapland and the whole area is an ancient Sami land, full of traces of Sami life and reindeer herding.

Allow yourself to fall in love with our cosy, friendly mountain that offers easy hiking terrain for young and old alike, with a fantastic view of the city life below, together with mountains and lakes.

If you would like to explore the mountain world together with your children, you have come to the right place. There are accessible mountain lodges in Ritsem, by Lake Akkajaure.

The lodge manager will help you to choose challenges and adventures for the youngest hikers. There are children’s books and fishing equipment to lend if you would like to catch the great arctic char for dinner. Why not go out on the lake on M/S Storlule, to the intersection of three national parks? STF has tours set over several days tailored to families with children.

For five days, the entire family gets to smell, taste and live life in the mountain world at its best. The last stop is Saltoluokta Mountain Lodge where the sauna is warm and a tasty three course dinner awaits hikers young and old.

This summer there are two guided tours available; “Up on the mountain and through new Gällivare” – come on a guided tour about the city that is being moved, which ends on the top of Mount Dundret, where you will have an amazing view.

“Gällivare past and in the future” – we will guide you through the exhibition about Laponia, the site where Sámi people have lived and worked for thousands of years, and then through the city Malmberget which is being phased out because of the mining operations under the town.

Take it slow and easy with a horse and cart tour around Gällivare’s Cultural trail and see our historical treasures; learning about our nature and culture. You will learn about the history of such buildings as; Gällivare Train Station, the northernmost windmill from the 1860s and Gällivare church, which is the municipality’s oldest building.

A visit to the church is recommended to see the beautiful interior.

Everyone who loves fishing knows that being at one with nature is the main thing. Becoming part of the mountain world is an unfathomably moving experience; the waters, the sneaky cat-and mouse games of the fish. Imagine the culinary experience when you succeed in cooking and enjoying the newly caught fish, spiced with a magical view of the mountain landscape. All of this is of course rounded off with the taste and smell of real pot-boiled coffee, made over open fire. Aaaah!

Why not surprise the family with an adventure day in Kutjaure, where the three largest national parks in Sweden meet: Sarek, Padjelanta (Badjelánnda) and Stora Sjöfallet (Stuor Muorkke). You fly out by helicopter in the morning, landing by the Utsi Sámi camp on the western end of the lake. A full day of fishing awaits, in either Lake Kutjaure or Voujaätno River, hiking in the peaceful area with unique mountain world flora and a wonderful view of the Ahkka massif. Laponia Triathlon

Laponia Triathlon is the world’s northernmost triathlon race of Ironman distance and one of only two races over this distance, in Sweden. Ironman distance is 3,860 m swimming, cycling 180 km and running 42 km.

In conjunction with this competition the Laponia Sprint Triathlon is also held. The sprint distance is 750 m swimming, 20 km cycling and running 5km.

There are many reasons that the running and skiing world elite favour Gällivare – the conditions for challenging and improving yourself are epic, all year round. Especially when mountain, countryside and city life meet. For example, Dundret Hill Climb (DHC), the toughest roller skiing event this summer. Challenge yourself alongside the elite or take a more relaxed approach and cheer the athletes from the sidelines.

Are you ready to join the likes of cross-country skiing champions Marcus Hellner and Charlotte Kalla and try Dundret Extreme Running (DXR)? With the Hellner Stadium at its centre, this K22 run is the ultimate test for all eager runners. Houses being moved are not an unusual sight.

A small arctic town WITH GRAND RELOCATION PLANS

in Gällivare in the late 19th century, the small town on the border between forest and mountain land has been in a state of constant change. When the mining expands, the surroundings are affected and houses and other buildings must sometimes be moved or demolished. Here there’s nothing strange about that, it is quite a natural development in a mining community. You could say that we live in symbiosis with the mining industry, as it steadily provides us with jobs and new business. By the way, did you know that there are two mines in Gällivare? The LKAB iron ore mine, the second largest underground mine in the world – and the Boliden copper mine in Aitik, about 15 kilometres outside of Gällivare.

Moving houses and buildings is nothing new to us. We have been doing that in Malm-

ever since mining began

berget, a part of Gällivare, for about 40 years.

The changes that are now ahead of us are the greatest so far. Of course, they affect the town and the people here in different ways. It is an exciting time, but also an emotional one. In the next 20 years, three quarters of Malmberget is to be shut down. Public buildings like the old peoples’ home, the gymnasium, the indoor swimming pool and many schools, must be replaced. Almost 2,000 homes are affected, along with historic buildings, offices, trade and industrial facilities. 250,000 new square metres will be built in Gällivare, two town centres are becoming one. It is a gigantic project that will transform the place from the ground up. We are heading for a new, exciting future in the small Arctic town of Gällivare. You’re welcome to join the adventure.

”The mining capital of Europe” – two mines you can visit all year round LKAB

Malmberget is home to the second largest underground iron ore mine in the world, mining at 1,250 metres underground and producing about 40,000 tonnes of iron ore every day.

In 2013, the total weight of finished products from LKAB was almost 9 million tons, making LKAB the fifth largest tax payer in Sweden that year. At the deepest level in the mine, 1,250 metres underground, there is even a restaurant for the employees.

AITIK

The Boliden Aitik mine is situated about 15 kilometres outside Gällivare.

The deposit consists of chalcopyrite and pyrite yielding copper, silver and gold. Aitik is Sweden’s largest copper mine and home to some of the largest machines in the world. Here you will find rock trucks that weigh 570 tonnes when fully loaded – the wheels alone are 4 metres in diameter. At the vantage point at the edge of the mine, you can see 450 metres down into the open cast.

The mine and community develop hand in hand Gällivare is to be developed into a small, world-class arctic town. This was the clear common goal following a dialogue between decision-makers, researchers, city planners and citizens. When Malmberget is closed down as a result of mining operations, the town will continue growing from the centre, over Vassara River and up towards Dundret and the mountains, providing varied living accommodation and access to hiking and outdoor life. An active lifestyle close to nature is in focus when Gällivare builds for the future. An education centre, a sports and culture hall and an ice and event arena is planned for the town centre. Keep an eye out for Gällivare in the future – the number of interesting activities in the areas of culture and sport will only keep on growing. Feel welcome to enjoy life together with us!

The village of Tjautjas is situated thirty kilometres north of Gällivare, above the grain border, at the end of the road. The beautiful countryside has made it a popular attraction, close to the mountains and the Lina old-growth forest is well worth a visit. There are just over 200 people living in the village, many are young and have moved here recently, giving the population an average age of less than 30 years.

NATTAVAARA

Nattavara is situated about 70 kilometres southwest of Gällivare and has about 300 residents. It is probably most famous for holding multiple records for being the coldest place in Sweden. It is also famous for the annual art exhibition, held every summer in Sarvisvaara, in the studio of artist Erling Johansson. Ten kilometres northeast of Nattavaara, by lake Saarijärvi, there is an area of old-growth pine forest, with pines as old as 500 years. www.nattavaara.net

SOUTUJÄRVIBYGDEN

The twin villages by the E10 – right between Gällivare and Kiruna – a perfect starting point for wonderful countryside experiences, outdoor living and fishing. The Lina and Kaitum old-growth mountain forests can be found in this area. They are links in the chain of nature reserves that line the mountain world and are dominated by vast coniferous forests and downy birches. The forests are largely old-growth. PURNUVAARA

Purnuvaara is a sunny little village at the foot of the Jerttaberget Mountain – the perfect starting point for sport fishers, horse enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, hikers and athletes alike. The village is situated between the mountain Särkisvaara and the river Ängesån, about 60 kilometres east of Gällivare. The Ullatti area includes the villages Ullatti, Äjjävaara and Rantavaara. Many visitors come here to fish in Ängesån. The village community centre in Ullatti is a gathering place for residents and visitors. It also serves as a hostel, a museum and a café. Other attractions in the area are trapping pits in Mänttyvaara, old mills at the intersection of rivers Myllyjoki and Ängesån, as well as an old settlement with remains from Ullatti’s first settlers. Storstenslandet is a site with large ice age stone blocks, about one kilometre south of Ullatti. Välimaa is a well-preserved part of the village with several log houses from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s, of important cultural and historic value. Hakkas is situated about 50 kilometres south of central Gällivare along route E10 and it is the largest village in the municipality, with about 500 residents. The name Hakkas comes from the Finnish word ‘hakanen’, meaning ‘pen’ or ‘field’. The settler Per Olssson was the first to settle in the area, at the Melderstein Manor in 1781. The Hakkas area is famous for its successful skiers, amongst other things, outdoor sports and outside activities are very important here.
