An Arctic pearl IN THE HEART OF SWEDISH LAPLAND w e l c o m e t o g ä l l i va r e ,
the small Arctic town 100 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, in the heart of Swedish Lapland. The winter season has already started in November and World Cup skiers from several national cross-country teams flock here to churn up rival Marcus Hellners home track. We have amazing ski trails here in Gällivare. If you’d rather ski downhill, you can choose between 15 different slopes on Dundret, our mountain in the middle of town. To get to the top, which is 823 metres above sea level, you can choose the Dundret Express; an ultra-modern six seat lift that takes you right up to the top in less than four minutes. Winter in Gällivare is long and glorious. During this dark period, there are many opportunities to see the spectacular Northern Lights dancing in the sky. To get away from the town’s street lights, you can take a ride out with Icelandic horses, sit comfortably in a sled behind enthusiastic workhorses or let strong sled dogs take you far out into the wilderness. From mid-winter darkness to sunny spring days. The beauty of early spring may send shivers down your spine and activities such as cross country and downhill skiing, snowmobile tours and ice fishing are popular. Enjoy the sun’s warming rays that bring out the first freckles while you grill sausages over an open fire out on the frozen water. Warm your hands on the mug you drink ‘Lemmel’ coffee from. In Gällivare the possibilities for winter adventures are endless. This small Arctic town is also home to two mines: the underground mine run by LKAB and the open pit mine Aitik. Mining is an important industry for our community and it has now reached the point where a whole community needs to be moved. Malmberget is being dismantled piece by piece and a new Gällivare is emerging. Gällivare is an Arctic gem worth exploring once, and then again and again. You are always welcome here. Come and make yourself at home

World Heritage Laponia BREATHTAKING MOUNTAINS AND MAGNIFICENT SCENERY
is a place, location, environment or object that is so valuable and unique, it is a priority for all humanity to protect and preserve it. It can be of natural or cultural value, sometimes both. Laponia was designated a World Heritage Site called ”the Laponian Area” in 1996 by UNESCO for its considerable natural and cultural values. Laponia is home to the Sámi, who have lived and worked in the area for thousands of years. The landscape has become a part of them and every brook, forest, hill, cliff, river and lake has a name. Reindeer have been in the region since the ice age and today reindeer herding is economically important and the foundation of the Sámi culture. There are nine different Sámi villages in Laponia where the Sámi live and work. They follow the reindeer herds on their seasonal migrational cycles. Although the area has been inhabited for a long time, traces of human beings are few. They live in and together with nature. The nature in Laponia is magnificent. Here you will find high mountains, deep valleys, barren hillsides and lush forests. There is also the country’s largest cohesive marshland with virgin forest of spruce and pine, as well as wonderful mountains that take your breath away. Laponia is an area so unique that it is important for all humanity to protect and preserve it for future generations. Laponia is yours, ours and the world’s heritage.

Naturum Laponia — a place of stories
First a glimpse of the sparse ancient forests, but come to the edge of the forest and the landscape suddenly opens up. The forests, rivers, lakes and mountains all meet. In the middle lies the nature center Naturum Laponia, a stone’s throw from the beach at lake Lánjas. This is the gateway to four national parks, two nature reserves and nine Sámi villages. A naturum is a place for storytelling. There may be stories about the mountains on the other side of the lake or how the reindeer come here every spring. We tell you a little about what led to this large area being designated a World Heritage Site. Get to know the mountains, forests and marshes. Follow the four seasons and gain insight into why the reindeer are the centre of the Sámi culture. Naturum Laponia is a newly built visitor center with an exhibition, café and a house designed by both architects and local craftsmen.

Early spring along Kungsleden
The Sámi are one of the world’s indigenous people, with their own parliament, flag and language. The Sámi area, Sápmi, stretches across four countries. In Swedish Lapland there are 32 Sámi communities that engage in reindeer herding within a given area. For thousands of years, the Sámi have been nomads, moving with the reindeer through the seasonal changes. Reindeer herders still live as nomads for part of the year. Traditional Sámi knowledge of how to live alongside nature without depleting its resources, has been passed down generation to generation. Reindeer herding is the foundation of Sámi culture, but there are also many Sámi companies working with arts and crafts, design, music, tourism and Sámi food production.
Hush… Photo: Andreas Hinzer
On the upper floor of the train station in Gällivare/Jiellevárre, you will find Laponia exhibition, which is about autumn, the most eventful season in Sápmi. Learn about the Sámi culture and be entranced by how the Sámi have lived and worked in the area for thousands of years and the development of the area to the present day. The exhibition is part of the larger exhibition that can be found at naturum Laponia in Stora Sjöfallet.
Sápmi Nature Camp
LAPONIA IS BOTH HOME AND WORKPLACE FOR THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
Sápmi Nature Camp is a high-end, sustainable and small-scale camp that offers high quality, close to nature accommodation in the Laponia World Heritage Area. The camp consists of ‘double’ rooms in the form of lavvu tents (that look like a tepee) furnished with comfortable double beds, stoves and cosy furnishings inspired by nature and the Sámi culture. Sápmi Nature Camp is operated by Lennart Pittja who grew up in a reindeer herding family. Sápmi Nature is committed to responsible tourism that does not threaten the reindeer and the herding here, but instead wants to share knowledge about Sámi life-both past and present. www.sapminature.com Off the beaten track, near the border of the the World Heritage Site, lies Saltoluokta. The STF’s mountain lodge has been here since 1912 and attracts people who wish to enjoy the mountains and be inspired by nature. The mountain lodge has seasonal opening times, offers several different types of accommodation, and the restaurant serves good food cooked with natural ingredients from the local area. During the early spring, STF arranges many activities including ski tours set against the stunning mountain backdrop. www.saltoluokta.se
If you meet grazing reindeer, please do not disturb them. If possible, take a detour around the animals. If you encounter a herd, sit down and wait until they have passed. In the spring, when the reindeer cows fawn, they are particularly sensitive to disturbances. Do you have a dog with you? Make sure to keep it on a leash, and keep it from barking.
DID YOU KNOW THAT… • The practice of reindeer herding has developed over thousands of years, from the hunt for wild reindeer, to the herding of today. • ‘Sarv’, ‘vaja’ and ‘härk’ are Swedish words loaned from the Sámi language. A ‘sarv’ is an adult male reindeer, a ‘vaja’ is a female reindeer with calves and a ‘härk’ is a castrated and tame reindeer. • There is a Sámi saying that the reindeer belong to the wind. Nature sets the rules and the reindeer herders are never completley in control of the size of their herd. 5

Winter adventures s n ow a n d w i n t e r i s e xc i t i n g i n g ä l l i va r e .
The winters are long and the possibilities for winter adventures are virtually endless. The snow usually falls early and in November the slopes of Dundret open for fantastic downhill skiing. One could say that the winters in Gällivare are spread over three seasons. Even if the snow comes early, it is not unusual to find the region still covered up to the end of April. Just after autumn comes the dark period that makes us yearn for warm blankets, lighting candles and the cosiness of Christmas. Saunas, lovely spa treatments, museum visits, Christmas dinner and wonderful winter activities such as dog sledding or cosy rides through the woods on a horse drawn carriage. After the winter solstice, the light begins to 6
slowly return and the cold period makes its entrance. At the beginning of the year it is not unusual to have temperatures as low as -35°C. During the cold winter nights, there are many chances to see the spectacular Northern Lights. Sometimes a small flicker among the stars, at other times the sky is filled with dancing green flames. As the days get brighter, clear days create a fantastic winter light. Some of the winter’s most beautiful images are taken during this crisp cold period. The white plains stretch as far as the eye can see. When the early spring arrives, the active winter in Gällivare begins. Ski tours, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and kicksledding. The days become longer and the sun is warming. Which winter adventure are you ready for? DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND GÄ L L I VA RE

Feel the warmth of the horse Feel the hooves thud on the ground as you ride through snow-covered forests. Over the mountains and through valleys. On horseback you experience nature up close. On clear nights the stars light up the dark winter sky and if you’re lucky, you will see the spectacular Northern Lights, or some of the forest animals such as Moose, reindeer or owl. www.galgbacken.com
The mountain on the middle of Gällivare offers cross-country skiing, ski touring, off-piste and 15 downhill runs, where the ultra-modern Dundret Express chairlift takes you to the peak. All ages and levels of skiers will find suitable skiing for around six months from November to May. Snow Park and Snowland are enjoyed by the children — everything you need for an outstanding family winter vacation is here. If you travel here by snowmobile, the ’Malmens road’ will take you from the coast all the way to Dundret, where you can park the snowmobile. Dundret is close to the mountains and near to all activities, yet still gives the feeling the wilderness is just a few steps away with excellent opportunities to experience the Northern Lights. www.dundret.se

Three cultures have met in Gällivare: Sámi, navvies and settlers. The three cultures have created an interesting history. The Sámi have lived and worked in the mountain areas for thousands of years. The navvies arrived as soon as mining took of when the ore railway line from Luleå to Narvik was completed in the late 1800’s. Also settlers came to the area following the ore rush. Today, Gällivare’s history is part of the local museum. The museum can be found at the Central School, in the centre of Gällivare. You can buy souvenirs and local handcrafts here. Today, LKAB’s iron ore mining takes place just north of Malmberget, but the ore deposits travel in a southwestly direction, under the city. Parts of Malmberget have already been moved or demolished. It is a social change that is underway and has affected the residents of the municipality for a long time. During the 2000’s, the pace of transformation has increased significantly and Malmberget is now being phased out and will be completely removed by 2032. In Gällivare, 250,000 m2 of new buildings will be built during the next ten years. An attractive center with a new high school is being built. The small community of Koskullskulle, about 8 km from Gällivare, is also growing and developing, through both relocation and new buildings. The small village Tjautjas is located 30 kilometers north of Gällivare. To get there, you travel through Koskullskulle, along a rather crooked road with beautiful surrounding scenery. Then you get to the village, which actually is a dead end. Tjautjas is special in many ways. It is located among the low mountains which on calm windless days, are reflected in the many lakes that can be found here. During winter, the lakes change to snowmobile tracks and from here you can follow the tracks to Kiruna. On the journey there you will come across the villages in Soutujärvi district. Late spring in Tjautjas is a place for snowmobile enthusiasts. About 50 kilometers southwest of Gällivare is the scenic village of Nattavaara, which is actually two villages, Nattavaara and Nattavaara Village, with the Råne river acting as a natural divider. A well-known attraction in the area is the 210 kilometre long Malmens road. A historic winter trail which acted as a transport road for ore. During this period it was used by reindeer caravans and sleds before the ore railway was completed at the end of the 1800’s. Today it is a popular ski, snowmobile and hiking trail. Not far from Nattavaara is Pellokielas, one of the most powerful virgin forest reserves in Norrbotten with 500 year old pine trees. The taste of Gällivare MORE THAN JUST FOOD
w h e n yo u g e t a ta s t e of Gällivare, we assure you, it will be difficult to let go of your fork. Especially if you’re enjoying a meal outside, taking a break during a day full of activities. Then, really good food really tastes good. Yes, the fact is that food is one of the most important ingredients of a truly memorable experience. That is why we here in Gällivare take cooking and the raw ingredients for it, very seriously. We have the luxury of living in the midst of the most majestic landscape which provides us with fantastic ingredients from lakes, rivers, forests and mountains. The active lifestyle gets even better when sustained on all natural game, fish and berries. Your entire body will thank you. When all these ingredients are cooked with love and care by skilled local chefs, the results are amazing. When you are tasting your way through Gällivare, in hotels, restaurants, cafés and bakeries, you might like to take some local produce home. Skogsbärsfröjd in Puoltikasvaara is a small-scale company that refines vitamin rich berries into 14
products like jam, juice and berry syrup. If you are looking to learn more about the gifts of nature, look out for a food experience from Essence of Lapland. Learn more about how you can use Labrador-tea, birch leaves and dandelion leaves to enhance your wellbeing. Take the opportunity to stock up on ingredients whilst you are here. If you would like to enjoy tasty treats with a good conscience, try Anna’s Naturliga foods and indulge in wholesome creations tasting of berries and chocolate. You mustn’t miss the butcher shop, Karlgrens, on the outskirts of the town centre. They offer great beef, reindeer and lamb charcuteries. Browse their beautiful shop and taste Kaffeost, the local squeaky cheese. You know, the fun, traditional cheese that you put in your coffee. Try it! And yes, the coffee should be boiled in a pot and really strong. We recommend the local Lemmelkaffe brand, the first dark roasted potboiling coffee in the world. It tastes best when prepared using the local, crystal clear water. A guaranteed pick-me-up, there’s no doubt about it. DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND GÄ L L I VA RE

Just outside of town is the small and cosy community Koskullskulle. Secluded in beautiful and scenic surroundings, you will find the charming country hotel Skogshotellet. Here you are welcomed with a smile and you will have a comfortable stay in the peace and quiet surroundings. You can eat well at both breakfast and dinner in the restaurant where delicious regional and european specialties are served. Outside the door, the white winter wonderland is waiting. www.skogshotell.se
Comfort in the wilderness
Getting to Gällivare If you are travelling by plane, you can arrive at Gällivare airport which is located just ten minutes by car from the town centre. Alternatively you can arrive at Kiruna airport or Luleå airport and travel on to Gällivare by car, train or bus. If you travel by train or bus, you will arrive at the travel center here in Gällivare. If you drive by car to Gällivare you can drive using the E10 or E45. Gällivare municipality is a large area and the distances between destinations can be relatively long. To the right you will see approximately how long it takes to travel by car in the region.

In the rustic and homely Lappesuando Hotel & Lodge, you live in comfort in a hotel far from the city noise and street lights. If you want to get even farther away, we recommend the Wilderness Camp, which both summer and winter is an extraordinary experience. One can only travel here by snowmobile during the winter and boat during the summer. Plenty of activities awaits in Lappeasuando, such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing and Northern Lights safaris. The adventures are waiting for you just outside your door. www.lappeasuando.com

You cannot miss...
...the great ski party in April
On the 11th of April 1965, the first Dundret Runt took place. The background to the race was that Gällivare had been visited by the legendary ski teacher Göran Frohm who suggested holding races around Dundret. Said and done. Today, skiers flock from afar to participate in the immensely popular Dundret Runt. Dundret Runt is a race where hundreds of skiers enjoy the beautiful early spring while they ski around Dundret at their own pace, with no time pressure. www.dundretrunt.com

....Gällivare’s ski premier
18
The ski season starts record early this year with the winter’s first competition at Hellner Stadium, here in Gällivare in November. The competition will be the official start for the Olympic season 2017—18. Gällivare has unique opportunities to offer early snow, which is why the International Ski Federation (FIS) has placed the World Cup premiere in Gällivare six times since 2004. The combination of early snow, hard, decisive courses and high-quality organisation has resulted in Gällivare and Bruksvallarna being appointed organisers of the official Swedish ski premiere and World Cup. www.sporteventgellivare.com

...to visit Toppstugan — the highest cabin
Are you going to Dundret in the winter? Then you should not miss a visit to Toppstugan (Åke på Toppen), which is a popular getaway for locals, but also for other ski-interested guests. It can be challenging to get up from Porjusvägen (E45) to Toppstugan. Although not more than 6 km, the climb is steep. A ski trip in nature is the best place and source of recreation and a nice experience for both young and old. www.friluftsgallivare.se
...the Homestead area
Photon: Daniel Olausson/Media Tales
The Homestead area (Hembygdsområdet) in Gällivare gives a genuine feeling of history and culture. Here, some of the oldest buildings in the municipality have been gathered to preserve them for future generations. Do not miss the Christmas market held at the homestead grounds in November every year. Snowy, cosy, dark, atmospheric; especially as Santa Claus is there!
Photo: Daniel Olausson/Media Tales
...the winter market in March The winter market in Gällivare has been a beloved meeting place for many years. For more than 200 years the ”vintermarknad” has symbolised that we are moving towards lighter days, after a long dark winter. It brings together traders from all over Sweden to sell spices, leather, meat, handicrafts and more. Look out for the warm clothes made from wool, Sámi handicrafts and the extremely good; dried, salted reindeer meat.
...Polar winter night in January
Photo: Jan Westerlund/Fotoklubben
Polar winter night is a regular festival with a variety of cultural activities. Now the Polar Winter Night grows and there are masses of events, exhibitions, dance, choir singing, zumba, yoga, jazz, art exhibitions and much more. In total there are about 40 events during three days and everything is free!

Summer in Gällivare lift your spirits when you visit Gällivare this summer. Go on an expedition in the breath-takingly beautiful countryside that surrounds Gällivare or experience the unique Laponia World Heritage site; a living cultural landscape, thanks to the indigenous Sámi people who have lived and worked there for centuries. Go by bus, rent a car or bike and travel along the road to the west. LKAB have mined for iron ore here since the late 19th century and the community is always changing and developing in symbiosis with the mine. We understand that you might raise your eyebrows when you encounter a house on wheels, but for us who live here, it is completely natural to move houses when the mine expands.

Welcome to Sweden’s Arctic destination! In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up by the Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling norhtern lights in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days without night under the midnight sun. In the east – a 300-km coastal stretch facing the world’s largest brackish water archipelago, with thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and lots of adventures around the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and river valleys from Skellefte River in the south to Torne River in the north‒east, all with their unique distinctive charateristics to offer. Traditions and cultures are strong here, and love of nature is even stronger. This is our everyday-life, and we invite you to share it with us. www.swedishlapland.com
Visit Gellivare Lapland, established in 2006, is a cooperative society with several cooperation partners working within the tourism industry. Visit Gellivare Lapland works with the international marketing of Gällivare as a destination. Gällivare is a small, world-class, Arctic town, offering unique experiences and proximity to nature, all year round. We make wishes come true. www.gellivarelapland.se 28
