Close to sea and nature, and one of the sunniest places in Sweden, these are some of the ingredients that make Luleå a fantastic summer destination. The two harbours that envelop the city centre give a sea breeze that is a constant reminder of the freedom out on the open sea. During the summer months, nature explodes with fragrance and colour, and wherever you are in the area, you are never far from grass beneath bare feet or calm, green forests that offer riches of berries tasting of summer. Take a boat tour out into the archipelago and try the life of an islander. With plenty of campfire sites and trails to discover, it makes for many 2

exciting adventures for the entire family. Indulge in culture – visit the Gammelstad Church Town World Heritage Site or learn more about the Sámi culture in the Råne River Valley. Take a seat on a rock with a fishing rod in hand and let all the world’s troubles disappear. In Luleå you can spend one moment at a lively restaurant, enjoying good food cooked using local delicacies, and the next finding peace by the ocean. You are invited to share our everyday life with long, bright summer days and nights, filled with adventure and a healthy helping of peace and quiet. The Luleå Tourist Centre is an independent organisation with just one mission: to give you the best Luleå has to offer. When does the boat depart? Which island in the archipelago do you recommend for us? Where can we camp in untouched wilderness? What do we do if it rains? Where can we park our camper van? Who do I ask about world heritage sites, fishing, rock climbing, islandic horses, rafting, mountain biking? Even if you get good weather, you might still need time tables. Even if you have plenty of fishing luck, you will need a fishing licence. You are just like Luleå: unique. Gammelstad Church Town

20 years as a world heritage site and harbours an atmosphere of days gone by. When you stroll through the church town, it doesn’t take much imagination to visualise the farmers arriving at there to build their cottages. Gammelstad Church Town has been a designated World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1996, meaning that it is covered by the UN Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. This year is the 20th anniversary of the appointment and it will be celebrated! Throughout the year, programs for families and individual visitors, connoisseurs and explorers are offered. The open-air museum Hägnan, a stone’s throw away from the church town, is also worth a visit when you are in Gammelstad. The open-air museum Hägnan, a stone’s throw from the church town is also worth a visit. At Hägnan you can see what life was like in a coastal regional village between the 18th and 20th century. The museum has buildings from all over Swedish Lapland and offers rich, varied activities and experiences for all ages. After having a little something to eat at Café Fägnan, a walk around the open-air museum will do you good. Alternatively, you can bring your own picnic basket and sit down on the grass. There is a lot to see, and you shouldn’t miss the shop that takes you back in time. Photo: Linda Stenman

n o t m a n y p e o p l e k n ow that the city of Luleå has not always been where it is today. Gammelstad, outside Luleå on the road to Boden, used to be the city centre up until the 17th century, before it was moved closer to the sea and the harbour where it lies today. When the city moved, it was named the New City of Luleå (Luleå Nya Stad) and the old one became The Old City of Luleå (Luleå Gamla Stad). The names were soon shortened to Luleå and Gammelstad respectively. Gammelstad is home to a unique cultural environment. Here you can find the largest late medieval stone church in Northern Sweden, from 1492 and the largest and most well-preserved church town in Sweden with more than 400 church cottages. The church cottages were built by local farmers in a time when attendance at church services was mandatory and the great distances in Northern Sweden made one-day visits impossible. However, Gammelstad was not only visited for these reasons, social gatherings were also important. During the church weekends, the alleys were crowded with people in weekend dress, the church bells rang, and friendships were made, maintained and broken. The distinctive cultural environment is well preserved

A Well-Preserved World “ For a long time, people did not want to market it. We kind of wanted to keep it to ourselves.”, as E. Hennertz once said about the people of Luleå and their love of their archipelago.

t h e lu l e å a rc h i p e l ag o i s a wo r l d o f i t s ow n .

1,312 ever-changing islands, shaped by weather and wind, midwinter cold and the magical midnight sun in summer. For a long time, the people of Luleå wanted to keep this vast archipelago near the city to themselves. This has preserved it, made it pleasantly sleepy. An experience for everyone and for all of the senses. Hop from beach to beach and hike across the islands with your children. Fall asleep and wake up to the sound of seabirds, waves and wind, in a cottage in the archipelago. Light, quiet nights and adventurous days. Go on day trips or tour the entire archipelago. Experience the Luleå archipelago in your very own way. Those used to life in the archipelago often say that you leave everything behind on the mainland. Worldly things leave your mind and time itself slows down. Here, there is a fresh fragrance, an aroma of sea and not harbour. The air is clear and the water brackish. The weather shifts. Sun turns to summer rain and mirror-like waters become stormy seas. The archipelago is whimsical. Take the popular island Klubbviken for instance, its two sides are completely 8

different from one another; one idyllic, with tour boats, sandy beaches, restaurants and fun activities, the other untouched, rough, facing the sea. Boat traffic to the larger islands is accessible and comfortable. Using your own boat, you can dock at natural harbours and have entire islands to yourself. The archipelago is wild but also flat, accessible and safe for children. Here, your fantasy is free to roam. Go bathing in the freshwater of Swedish Lapland’s mighty rivers. Further out, the river meets the sea and the water becomes brackish. Taste the archipelago. Enjoy the amazing archipelago buffet aboard the tour boat M/S Laponia. On Hindersön salmon is caught in the nearby bay and berries and mushrooms are picked on the island. Enjoy fried Baltic herring with mashed potatoes, lingonberries and clarified butter at Klubbviken. Some islands have had residents for hundreds of years. On the outer rim of the archipelago lies Rödkallen, Kluntarna, Småskär and Brändöskär, left to the mercy of time and weather. There are cabins which once belonged to fishermen, lighthouse keepers and coast pilots - and there are lighthouses. De st i nat i ons of Sw e d i s h L a pl a nd   LU L EÅ

Quickly or calmly

Go inside log chapels from the 18th century. In winter, you can see the magical phenomenon of flowing ice, rising like a wall against the world. In summer, the sea opens up, all the way to the horizon. The flora and fauna is unique. There are roe deer, elk, sea eagles and reindeer, left behind after grazing on the islands during the winter. In the outer rim, seals are an increasingly common sight. The tastiest fish is said to be the sea trout, second only to lavaret roe in culinary brilliance. Here are seals and fish normally found in the Arctic Ocean, relics from the late stages of the last ice age. Cloudberries, sea-buckthorn and arctic raspberries grow in the archipelago. Clean air and light nights fill them with taste. You can smell heather, clay and Bothnian field wormwood. You can catch a glimpse of the eyebright Euphrasia bottnica and the hair grass Deschampsia bottnica. For a long time, the locals did not want to market this. They wanted to keep it to themselves. This made the Luleå archipelago well-preserved and pleasantly sleepy, ideal for adventures and experiences, or for calm days without end.

Fall asleep and wake up Fall asleep and wake up to the sound of seabirds, waves and wind, in a cottage in the archipelago. Cut firewood, make a fire, and heat water. A timeless sanctuary. An overnight stay in the archipelago is a genuine and unfor gettable experience Photo: Camilla Niemi

Experience the archipelago quickly or calmly. Travel comfortably aboard a tour boat, paddle peacefully in a kayak or canoe, or try a jet-ski. You will soon be in the outer archipelago. Or back in the city. Regardless of your preferred pace, the Luleå archipelago means freedom.

Boats are available to borrow from the Tourist Centre.

Go island hiking with your children Row from Tjuvholmssundet on the mainland out to Sandön. Dock at natural harbours. Follow paths and trails across several islands in the archipelago. Pick berries and mush rooms. Listen to seabirds and catch a glimpse of the wildlife. Have a lightsaber fight on your very own sand du nes. Walk the ‘nature trail’ at Kluntarna or the hiking trail at Småskär. Experience the longer Skärgårdsleden (the Archipelago Trail) spanning all the way from Luleå Airport to Brändöskär on the outer rim of the archipelago. 9

SIX ISLANDS TO VISIT yo u c a n c h o o s e b e t w e e n short day tours and longer tours with the possibility of staying ove night on one of the islands. The ship M/S Stella Marina is Luleå’s bathing shuttle and operates between Södra Hamn (South Harbour) in central Luleå and the Klubbviken Havsbad. M/S Symfoni also departs from Södra Hamn and takes you from pier to pier between the islands of the archipelago. Light food is available on board. M/S Laponia is boarded at Teaterkajen in Luleå’s North Harbour. She is your choice if you wish to go on a cruise amongst islets and skerries in the archipelago. M/S Laponia is a well-equipped, accessible ship with a restaurant kitchen, two lounges and a sun deck. The Laponia bread, baked on board, is a summer classic and if you want to come on the popular shrimp dinner cruise you must make a reservation well in ad vance.

The various tour boats will take you out in the archipelago between 10th June – 11th September. The time table is available at Luleå tourist centre and at: lulea.se/skargard

Kluntarna

Sandön The largest island in the archipelago. Klubbviken Havsbad is here with long, sandy beaches. You come here if you want to bathe, have a snack, eat or enjoy evening entertainment. Make time to take a walk along the footpath of the island and visit the shingle field at Lappmyrberget. There are also cottages to rent here.

This island is famous for its archipelago museum and gallery. Another tourist attraction is the 18th century windmill. The island has two rental cottages – the only cottages in the archipelago that have water and electricity.

Hindersön

10

2016

Luleå’s favourite island. Here, you can experience most of the different types of environment found in the archipelago by walking the beautiful hiking trails. Near Victoriaklippan are remains from the foun dations of the first fishing camps on the island. Also, don’t miss the labyrinths and the compass rose, the fields of shingle and the old harbour. The island has three cottages and two sauna facilities, together with a nice harbour where you can moor your own boat.

The tourist centre at Kulturens Hus can help you find a cottage that fits your needs perfectly, and they have great information about all there is to experience in the archipelago. Book your cottage online: lulea.nu/bokastuga – or call the tourist centre for more information.

Luleås skärgårdsbåtar

Hindersön is one of the bigger islands in the Luleå archipelago and has a resident population. Already in the 16th Cen tury, people that lived off of fishing, farming and seal hunting, were resident here. The island has had both an iron ore mine in the end of the 19th Cen tury and chalk and marble mining in the beginning of the 20th Century.

Brändöskär Picturesque boathouses line the beach whilst the cottages on the island are situated on the mountain. Brändöskär lies at the far end of the archipe lago and is famous for its fishing camp, its chapel and the statue of Christ by artist Erik Marklund. Here modern cottages are available for rent.

Småskär The fishing camp on the island has long played an important role in Luleå’s history and has been around since the 16th century. There are several smaller beaches here and also a rich bird life. Around 40 species of breeding birds and grey seals can be spotted west of the island. The chapel at Småskär was built in the 1720’s, making it the oldest in all the islands of Luleå’s coast. There are two cottages to rent here.

Or sneak out in the middle of the night for a swim in the light summer night. A luxury that can’t be found in many other places! Do you prefer the heated outdoor pools, there are several kid-friendly versions for seven days a week.

Adventures big and little FOR KIDS ALL AGES

Luleå is a great place to fill the day with fun activities. It’s good to have a fishing rod handy on your outings – because before you know it, you’ll find a creek or a bay where you can try your luck. Please don’t forget your life jacket, though. Teknikens Hus (The House of Technology) is a great place for all clever juniors. Here, both younger and older children get to explore to their hearts’ content by making paper from recycled materials, blasting rock in the mine and trying many different experiments. At Teknikens Hus you will also find an exhibition about the Facebook data centre, only a stone’s throw away, as well as a large exhibition on mining and geology. Very exciting for those of you who want to try polishing your own stones, panning for gold, hovering over a volcanic crater, going down into the mine, drilling inside the mountain or making ore pellets. For the younger children, Leo’s Lekland adventure centre is perfect, you will be welcomed by Leo the Lion when you arrive. Jump, bounce, slide and run for as long as you can. Indoor activities are one thing – but during the summer in Luleå you simply must not miss all the fun outdoors. Pack your picnic basket, a nice blanket, and head out to Gültzaudden where

a beach, fun and games in the forest, and a playground awaits you. Ice cream and other goodies are available at the café. Exciting adventures can also be found at Luleå Steelpark – an extreme sports park where you can try biking, skateboarding or rollerblading. It is totally free to visit and guaranteed to be lots of fun! Whilst we’re on the subject of high speed adventures, what could be more fun than challenging the entire family to a race at the go-cart track close to the airport just outside town? Watch out, the bends are sharp! A little calmer, but still quite adventurous, is going on one of the boats to the islands in the Luleå archipelago – and picturing, through a child’s eyes, how many others have arrived in the same way. Maybe a pirate captain some hundred years ago? Nearest to Luleå is Klubbviken with a bath, a playground, canoe rental and restaurant. Further out on the island of Kluntarna, you can find Naturum, walking trails and a nice beach. Here there are also several labyrinths for those of you who would like to let your imagination take over for a while. According to legend, people walked them for good fortune when hunting and fishing, and you certainly want the fishes to bite when on holiday!

You’re invited to look at the animals in the pens, and please enjoy homemade pastries and cakes at Café Fägnan before you visit the well-stocked country store. Hägnan is open daily from mid-June to mid-August and everything from traditional Swedish Midsummer celebrations, to historic games, a summer market and sing-a-long nights are arranged here. 14

Close to flourishing allotments, at the far end of the Hertsön residential area is Hertsö Miljögård (Hertsö Organic Farm). There are sheep, rabbits, pigs, hens and nice barbecuing sites here. The café at Storgården serves homemade pastries, sandwiches and waffles. The farm has a garden of its own and the surrounding forest areas are wheelchair accessible. If you feel like walking about, there are several trails, like the Health Trail, just nearby. Open daily through summer, until September. Please note: the café doesn’t take credit cards.

if it rains

Even though Luleå is one of the sunniest summer cities in Sweden, rain clouds sometimes shroud the city. When this happens, the fairy tale cave at the City Library, the train museum in Karlsvik, Teknikens Hus (The House of Technology), and the aviation museum at F21 Air Force Base are all there to save the day. There is also the Norrbotten Museum with the ‘Olden Days Room’ and various exhibits geared towards children. Children with a lot of energy will enjoy a visit to Leo’s Lekland at Storheden where they can play on slides and climbing frames.

Adventure and playground You are standing on the river bank and you see the water whirling. You can feel a rush inside when you realise that in just a little while you will be travelling on the frothing water in a rubber raft. River rafting will shake you up and make you feel alive. You will most likely squeal with delight all the way. Your wet clothes will dry, but the feeling will remain for the rest of your life.

runs through natural forests and untouched mires. The river is an amazing waterway for canoeing, except for the wild rapids, perfect for river rafting. During the summer, the natural environment comes alive, becomes welcoming and never sleeps. To many people, the river means tranquillity and peace of mind. Untouched, undeveloped, it lives a life of its own. Some stretches, especially those by the Spikälven and Livasälven tributaries are described as truly fantastic. The Lassbyforsen river has a magical, mythical aura and gives you the feeling that there is a forest nymph hiding behind every rock. Experience an exotic beaver safari up close. During the tour you will be going ashore and eating out in the open. If you like the idea of combining nature experiences with high-speed 16

excitement, you can join an experienced guide and cycle through the wilderness surrounding the Råne River valley. Or hike along the river banks. There grow the crowfoot Actaea erythrocarpa, the lettuce Mulgedium sibiricum and the smartweed Persicaria foliosa. When the evening comes, nothing beats a cleansing sauna bath. Sauna rafts are available for hire. If you need to cool down, just take a refreshing dip in the river. Are you a climber? Two popular climbing sites are Snipen in Niemisel and Kvarnberget at Brändön. Together with an instructor and using the right equipment, you are ready to enjoy a thrilling, challenging experience. Luleå is an ideal fatbike city all year round. Winter offers frozen rivers and seas. Summer means sand dunes and light nights in the forest.

Regardless of whether you choose to stay at a campsite, in a hotel room in the city or in a cottage in the archipelago, Luleå’s adventures and outdoor experiences are always close by. The flora and fauna of the Hertsöstigen trail or the tranquillity of Gammelstadsviken. The Kärleksstigen trail in Råneå. Vitådalen, Snöberget. Walking in old-growth forest in the early morning light is quite an unusual experience, almost peculiar. In the evening, you can see the mist dancing across meadows and waters. Enjoy the view of the Bälingeberget mountain, looking out over cobblestone ridges and treetops. Visit the Ormberget mountain on an early morning and watch as Luleå wakes up. Summer means 100 days without night, a natural environment that never sleeps and experiences which never seem to end.

Paddle through an archipelago illuminated by the midnight sun. Ride along tranquil forest trails on the back of an Icelandic horse. Sleep 50 metres up in the air, hanging freely off a mountain with cliff. The company, Explore Luleå, explore luleå will give you an experience you’ll never forget. Here are three unique experience packages this summer.

experience

Luleå

1 Midnight Sun Experience Midnight sun paddling, floating sauna and fishing You can hardly get closer to the archipelago than you do in a sea kayak, silently gliding across the water surface. As the summer night settles, the world goes quiet but the light remains, making the excur sion magical. Dinner is prepared on the shore, over an open fire, with newly caught fish or lightly smoked reindeer on the menu. The night is rounded off with a sauna on a raft, floating in the midnight sun. It doesn’t get more Luleå than this. On the Saturday, fishing is on the schedule. The brackish waters of the archipelago or the beautiful river? Rapids, still waters or lakes? It depends your wishes and where the fish are. Come along with an experienced local, guide. You mustn’t miss the Midnight Sun Experience.

3 Close to Nature Sea quay and Icelandic horses The Close to Nature package combines paddling in the amazing Lu leå archipelago with a full day of Icelandic horse riding. Just outside Luleå, in the small village of Jämtön, a powerful experience of something lost awaits you. In a kayak and on horseback, you travel across land and water in the way that people used to. You go back to the roots. You come close to nature and open all your senses. The activities are always carried out in small, intimate groups. Any feeling of ‘typical tourism’ evaporates. A full day of Icelandic horse riding can’t be compared with your average ride. Explore Luleå provides transfer, accommodation, food and equip ment. All packages are Friday to Sunday. Single activities can also be booked at explorelulea.com

2 Adventure Tour Climbing and overnight stay on a cliff After a day of climbing you will rest overnight in a portaledge, a bed hanging freely off the rock, 50 metres up in the air. Looking out over the vast forest landscape in the light night is a feeling difficult to describe with words. You have to be there. Experience the height and the vast landscape, the quiet and the tran quillity. You will never have felt this alive be fore. Staying overnight on a cliff, in a so called portaledge, is only possible in a few places in Sweden and expe riencing it in midnight sun is probably world unique. Explore Luleå’s climbing and portaledge is safe, secure and accessible to most people.

More to do...

Photo: Camilla Bondareva

Bälingeberget

Bälingeberget Mountain is an easily accessible nature reserve with re mains from the melting of the inland ice sheet, large shingle fields, banks showing the shifting sea levels, caves and long, continuous eroded edges. There are several walking paths and rest stops with campfire sites. The view from the top is beautiful.

Sägenleden

Hertsöstigen Hertsöstigen is a new hiking trail in the Ormberget-Hertsölandet nature reserve. The trail is 17 kilometres long and stretches from west to east through the entire reserve. Along the trail, there are information signs about the plants and animals that can be found in the area. The trail has footbridges over mires, however, if the weather is wet, you will need boots.

Hembergsleden Hembergsleden lies in Ersnäs, 20 km south of Luleå. The full length of the trail is six kilometres but you can use shortcuts for a three or four kilometre hike instead. 2.5 km of the trail follows an illuminated track, meaning that it has a smooth surface and easy terrain. Other than that, it is a well-walked trail with footbridges over some wet land sections. Part of the trail crosses a shingle field, making it slightly more difficult to walk.

Sägenleden (Swedish: The Legend Trail) is a site where you can experience the local oral tradition. The trail covers four sites in Luleå where inexplicable, supernatural events are said to have taken place. At every site there is an information sign telling a local legend in both Swedish and English, as well as a QR code that you can scan with your smartphone to have the legend read to you. The trail is approx. 53 km long, open at no cost 24/7 during the snow-free part of the year. Take the opportunity to visit these mythic places, who knows, you might create a story of your own to tell.

For information on excursion, hiking and adventure in north section of Lulea, visit www.vitadalen.se

Fäbodaleden This trail begins in Antnäs, by the bell-tower of the Sörbya Church. An information poster can be found at the nearby ICA supermarket where you can also get a hiking map. The trail which is about 10.4 km long will take you along old paths and roads past four shielings. The trail has footbridges over wetter parts and is clearly marked with hiking trail signs. You will be walking through both young and old forests.

Ingredients and tastes

Smoked trout, a local classic, together with the origin labelled Kalix vendace roe, a delicacy often served at the Nobel Banquet, here served on crisp bread.

Elk, reindeer and ptarmigan. Kalix lavaret roe, sea trout and arctic char from mountain lakes. Cloudberries, lingonberries and arctic raspberries. Swedish Lapland is home to many of the most sought-after ingredients used in gourmet kitchens all over the world. The cooler climate means that things grow more slowly. At the same time, the summertime midnight sun makes the environment erupt with growth. The food and the ingredients mirror the region. Clean air, clear water, sometimes subtle, sometimes intense. It tastes like nowhere else. It tastes real. The food of Swedish Lapland traditionally comes from farmlands, forests, meadows, gardens, mountains, lakes, rivers and the sea. The practices of drying, smoking, pickling and preserving are rooted in the need to save and preserve what summer provides. Today, preservation is an art form, creating delicacies. You must experience smoked or dried reindeer meat. The surströmming, fermented Baltic herring from the village of Kallax outside Luleå is a unique experience. The smell often frightens newcomers, but enthusiasts and gourmands describe the taste as being almost divine. Ingredients shaped by an ever-changing climate. Food rooted in passion and history. It tastes like nowhere else. It tastes real.

Sports bars Tapas de Papá At Tapas de Papá Spanish influences and ingredients meet in a relaxed environment. The industrial look is combined with rustic furniture, warm lighting and a nice atmosphere, like that one of a Spanish cerveceria. At Tapas de Papá you choose be tween different side dishes instead of the traditional – starters, main course, dessert. You pick the food you want to eat and pay for the pinchos at the end of the evening. It is a very social way of eating, perfect to share with friends.

If you are looking for both food and sports there are several sports bars to visit.

• At O’Learys you’ll find the perfect

mix of food, sport and people, but also an event arena with a bowling alley, pool tables and a restaurant.

• The Allstar Sportsbar serves “Junk

The microbrewery where the soul of Swedish Lapland is bottled

Colza oil and lamb

What does a sunny summer day in Luleå taste like? Like a light ale, light and fresh with hints of goose berry and cloudberry. That is, if you ask Botten vikens Bryggeri, a young microbrewery passionate about new tastes, showing Swedish Lapland through seasonal brews. With names like Förstan (The First), Ringfrost, Polarnatten (The Polar Night), Motljus (Backlight) and Morgondimma (Morning Mist), the encounter with Swedish Lapland is pleasantly tasty and surprisingly embracing. At Hemmagastronomi you can try the brews that everyone is talking about.

Between Luleå and Boden, on the south side of the Lule River, is the small village of Avan. The northern Swedish equivalent of rapeseed, colza, is grown here. The colza is nou rished by the long, light summer nights, giving the oil its distinctive taste. Use it for baking, cooking and salads. It also works as a massage and skin oil. The Avan farm shop is also a sheep farm holding about 30 Gotland Sheep. They sell their own leather, yarn, wool and char cuterie products.

Shop local

Nordansmak Fruit and vegetable shop with a vegetarian and vegan reataurant. Here you will find organic foods, locally produced fruit and vegetables, cheese and sausage products.

Fresh fish from Junköfiskarna

Farm shops

Every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, Junköfiskarna comes to the North Harbour, selling fresh fish straight off of the boat. The floating fish shop is a tradition and some times they carry smoked lavaret, an excellent summer picnic snack. This is a holiday must in Luleå! Be in time!

Shopping at a farm shop means shopping for locally produced products straight from the farmer, all whilst having a nice outing. The Avan farm shop is run by sheep farmer Anna-Carin who sells hides, yarn, craft goods and, in autumn time, fresh lamb meat. 25

Stroll along Storgatan and pamper yourself with shopping in the boutiques or liven up your luggage maybe your favourite shirt got stained at last night’s barbecue? The shops in Luleå have most of the things you might ever need. In Luleå, there are many signs that the people of the city like being out at sea. The mall simply titled Shopping, incidentally the first mall in the world when built in the 1950’s, is one example. “Welcome aboard” could easily be an appropriate greeting when entering the building, designed by architect Ralph Erskine. 26

Holidays usually go hand in hand with “that little something extra.” What better way to have that than freshly baked bread for breakfast or maybe for the picnic basket. Browse in one of the shops selling fresh sourdough bread. Healthy and a perfect start to the day’s adventures. Lively summer city

THE EVENTS THAT COLOUR LULEÅ

t h e l aw n s o f s ta d s pa r k e n are practically made for picnic blankets! Bring friends, family, including grandma! During the summer months there will be all kinds of entertainment on the stage. With a city centre where everything is within walking distance, Luleå is the perfect summer city. It’s easy to get from Storgatan, the heart of Luleå, to other activities. Did you know that some of Sweden’s most appreciated artists are from Luleå? Movits, Zacke and Mattias Alkberg are all from here! The people of Luleå love music and the summers are no exception. The festivals have a lot of great artists. It’s easy to hear a number-one song and discover a rising star in the very same evening. It won’t take you many minutes to walk back into town from a gig at Gültzauudden.

When you see colourful flags on local buses in June, it’s a sure sign that the Pride festival is in town. Dress up and join the parade! Or try the climbing wall during Hamnfestivalen (the Harbour Festival) in July. Listen to good music, get dizzy on the amusement park rides, buy a dolphin balloon and listen to great talents in Poetry Slam. There’s lots to do for all ages. Summer is rounded off in August with an alternative festival, Musikens Makt. The stage, known as Potatiskällaren (The Potato Cellar) is something special. In September, the happy food artisans of the International Street Market return to town. Mussels from Provence, Catalan ham or Australian kangaroo hamburger might appeal to you. If the burger gives you a sweet tooth, there’s English fudge, French pastries or Dutch cumin cheese to buy. 20 june–21 august

There is both exitment, adventure, nature and culture for the entire family in these majestic surroundings. During summer a walk along the rapid will be a grand expe rience. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy the sunshine from the rocks, take a dip or if you dare – jump in the water from “Döda fallet” (the dead fall). Or perhaps you would like to visit the forestry and timber-floating museum. Pre-book your picnic basket at Hotel Storforsen. The hotel also arranges guided nature walks. 38

Route 616

Selets bruk (Selet’s Mill) is a pictu resque and easily accessible nature reserve with a heritage dating back to the 18th century. The area is a popular choice for excursions, pro tected both for its natural beauty and its cultural history. Bring a picnic basket, a berry-picking basket or fishing tackle and spend a day at Selet. There are plenty of resting places, campfire sites and walking trails with information boards telling the story of the mill.

Nestors café

Visit the Treehotel in Harads

During the summer, Nestor’s Café in Överstbyn has many culinary delicacies made using locally produced, organic ingredients. There is also a general store and arts and crafts. The atmosphere from the 30’s and 40’s is still alive and well! nestorscafe.se

Make an excursion to one of the coolest hotels in Sweden, in Harads, halfway to Jokkmokk from Luleå. Stay in one of the uniquely designed rooms amongst the treetops, rooms with names like Ufo and Mirrorcube. Or take a guided tour in the oldgrowth pine forest and listen to the story of how the Treehotel became a reality. There are lots of other activities well worth a visit, and local food can be found at Britta’s restaurant by the Treehotel. treehotel.se

Meldersteins Manor

Experience Sámi culture

Melderstein Manor was the place to be in the 18th century. For many years, the manor was the centre of the ironworks administration in Swedish Lapland and it was owned by the royal Bernadotte family. Today, it is a hotel close to nature and the restaurant is open on weekdays in July, and available for booking at the weekends.

Take a slightly longer trip, along the inland road up to Jokkmokk. Here in the forest country is where the mountainous regions begin and here is Laponia, the World Heritage Site of Swedish Lapland. At Ájtte, a Swedish Sámi museum, stories are told about nature and culture. You are taken on a journey through time and space where you will see shaman drums, Sámi clothes, and hear Sámi songs, joiks, about nature and travels. You can also go on a virtual helicopter tour over 1000 kilometres of mountains in a simulator that feels just like the real thing. Only a short walk from Ájtte, you will find Jokkmokks Fjällträdgård (Jokkmokk’s Mountain Garden) where you can look at plants that grow on mountain tops, steep southern slopes and in other different mountain environments. ajtte.com

Welcome to Sweden’s Northernmost Destination! In Swedish Lapland you can explore new adventures in an arctic environment. You’re a long way north, around the Arctic Circle, but thanks to the warm Gulf Stream of the Atlantic Ocean you can comfortably experience all the seasons. With vast contrasts from polar nights with northern lights in a white winter landscape, to warm summers with a hundred days without night under the midnight sun. In the east – you’ll find a 300 km coast line and thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique raw ingredients. In the west – majestic mountains, streams with water so clean you can drink it and great adventures right around the corner. And in between the quiet, mysterious forest and river valleys from Skellefteå River in the south to Torne River in the north-east which all have their unique features. Traditions and culture are strong here, and the love of nature is even stronger. This is our everyday-life, and we invite you to share it with us. www.swedishlapland.com
