WelcometotheJuneissueof

Brookside and old Town Neighbors!

WE ALSO WELCOME everyone to summer! We ended the school year with a summer kick-off pool party. The kids invited their friends over, and we snacked on chips and popsicles and ate pizza. The kids did what kids do: shouting, laughing, running, playing, and attaining joy. It set the tone for summer when we will go with the flow, adventure when we can, rest and relax other times, have loud times with friends, and quiet times alone. It’s summer and it’s delicious! Speaking of delicious, in this issue, we introduce you to Cake4Kids, a national nonprofit that celebrates foster and youth-at-risk birthdays with cake. Launched by Libby Gruender in San Francisco, the nonprofit worked its way to the east coast in 2019 when Mary Campbell read an article about Gruender’s work. She is now the ambassador of the Northern Virginia chapter and helps make children feel loved on their birthdays. Read about this special nonprofit on page 10.

We also introduce you to the Dyers. Stacy and William have selflessly given their time to the betterment of society. William has spent his career in the Air Force and Stacy has worn several career hats and even served as a surrogate mother for a couple struggling to conceive. Stacy’s next career will be as a science teacher at Kettle Run High School this fall. Meet the Dyers on page 6.

I would also like to take a moment to wish all the men out there who father a child in any capacity a wonderful Father’s Day! Most of all, Shawn, who is a wonderful father to our four children!

We hope everyone has a wonderful start to summer!

Aimée

The Dyer Family's Selflessness

residenT FeaTure
6 Brookside and old Town Neighbors | June 2023 ©

William and Stacy Dyer have been married for nine years this month. “We eloped spontaneously at the putt-putt golf course where we had our first date.” This spontaneity best summarizes Stacy who pursues her interests thoroughly before shifting to a new one.

While Stacy has tested the waters of several careers throughout her adult life, William has spent his career in the Air Force and today works in cybersecurity for the National Reconnaissance Office. As everyone knows, frequent travel is part of the package of military life.

“I’m originally from Houston and William is from North Carolina, near Raleigh. We met in Hampton Roads, VA, and lived in Charleston, SC before moving back to Virginia,” said Stacy. While they hope to stay, William has one more active-duty assignment before he retires.

After high school, William went to college for a few semesters until he

realized, like Stacy, he was unsure of his direction. Leaving school, he took up work in a book factory where he acted as a press operator printing books like The Farmer’s Almanac and Harry Potter novels. Joining the military later than most, he entered the Air Force in 2009 so that he could experience life outside of his small town.

Stacy and William are both the only military members in their immediate families. William was deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan in 2011 where he worked to secure DoD networks. Upon retirement, William plans to pursue civilian cybersecurity opportunities.

After high school, Stacy joined the Navy, working as an aviation electrician repairing circuit boards. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life and the Navy gave me the stability I needed while I figured it out.”

After four years, she left the Navy, married, and had two

children. When she was 25, she decided to become a surrogate mother. “I had seen a movie when I was 18 about surrogacy and decided then that I would do it someday.” She spent a year working with a couple and finally helped them conceive a son. “I told myself all along it wasn’t my baby that it was theirs. That made it easier once he was born. She also asked me to stay in the hospital for a few days, which gave me the chance to observe her mothering him. It was a closed adoption after that, and I went home and put my energy into my children. It was a very fulfilling experience.”

During the surrogacy experience, Stacy learned about the field of embryology. “I didn’t even know this was a thing until I did the surrogacy. But once I found it, I decided to return to school as a premed student,” she

said. Stacy earned an undergraduate degree in Biology: PreMed from Old Dominion University and a master’s degree in Reproductive Clinical Science at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Until June, she worked as an embryologist at George Washington University in D.C.

This fall Stacy will join the ranks at Kettle Run High School as the new Chemistry teacher. “I have young children at home and am looking forward to having more time in my schedule to spend with them,” she said.

At home, William and Stacy have a 21-year-old daughter, Sara, who is a student at George Mason University and mother to the couple’s first grandchild, a little girl who is 9 months old. Sara is also currently in Hope Theatre’s Beauty and The Beast.

They also have a recent Kettle Run High School graduate, Riley, who spends his time building computers. This fall he will be attending MIAT College of Technology to become an airframe and powerplant technician.

Rising KRHS freshman Ruby is next in line. She is also an actor and was recently in the KRHS performance of Shrek as teenage Fiona, and Marshall Middle School’s ELF. Ruby is also in the school choir where she recently auditioned and was chosen for this year’s Virginia state honor choir.

Harley Quinn is 8 and a rising third grader at Greenville, and last, but not least, is Mary Rose, a rising first grader. Both girls enjoy gymnastics at BRAG.

With five children and one grandbaby, the three hours spent commuting was too much according to Stacy. But connections with her family are not the only ones she wants to make. “We moved here two years ago from Charleston but with our jobs, we feel very disconnected from the community. I’ve always had teaching in the back of my mind and thought it would be a lot of fun. It will help me make the connections I’m looking for while still performing a job that fulfills me and my need to help others and give back,” said Stacy.

The Dyers love their new community. “We were living in Chantilly when a friend sent us the listing for our house. We went to see it and just fell in love with everything. We laughed that after so many years trying not to live on base, we ended up moving to a house on a former military base,” she said of the Vint Hill Farm Station’s military past.

When not working, William enjoys disc golf and Stacy sewing.

The family looks forward to visiting family members in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and North Carolina this summer. And before meeting her new students and their families in August, Stacy will be catching up with girlfriends during a much-anticipated girl’s trip to Hawaii.

She looks forward to returning home relaxed and ready to start her new chapter as a High School Chemistry Teacher.

Cake4Kids is Serving Up Something Sweet

CAKE4KIDS WAS FOUNDED in September 2010 in Sunnyvale, California, by Libby Gruender to provide free birthday cakes to foster children and at-risk youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. She had read an article about a young girl in foster care who burst into tears when her new foster mother presented her with a chocolate birthday cake. She wasn’t upset about the flavor but overwhelmed by the gesture. She had never had a birthday cake before.

Gruender resolved to make sure the children in her community had birthday cakes to celebrate.

In 2019, Mary Campbell read about Gruender’s work.

“It had never occurred to me that there are children who won’t get a cake for their birthday,” said Campbell in an interview on the organization’s website. “When I think

of the struggles that some of these children deal with, I never once considered whether they would get a cake on their birthday. If we can help to provide a struggling child with a birthday cake, that is truly a gift for all those involved. Every child should feel loved and special on their birthday, just like I did.”

She made the call and established the first chapter outside of California. Today, there are 24 chapters, and Campbell is the ambassador for Northern Virginia. “We were the first chapter outside of California, here in NoVA.”

BIRTHDAY BASICS

The mission, she said, is simple: Bake and deliver birthday cakes to underserved children who might not otherwise receive one.

“In a world where the basics of a positive childhood are often out of reach and youth have little to call their own, the seemingly simple gift of a birthday cake can make a huge impact by raising their self-esteem and confidence,” she said.

Campbell grew up in a large family. She said they didn’t have a lot of money, but she never realized that because she was surrounded by love. And birthdays were always special.

“My mom always made my brother and me amazing birthday cakes filled with love,” she said. “When I got older, I started baking birthday cakes for all of my godchildren for their birthdays, and, eventually, I had my own children and baked for them for every special occasion and holiday and, of course, their birthdays.”

MAKING THE CONNECTION

services agencies to identify kids in need. Then the baking assignments are sent out to one of more than 600 local volunteers to bake the cake.

And not just any cake. The kids request flavors and sometimes give some decoration theme suggestions. “One of my favorites was for a young person who requested the theme green, animals, and jewelry,” said Campbell. “The baker made the most amazing green frog wearing jewels.”

To date, more than 3,400 cakes have been delivered locally.

“All of the cakes are absolutely made with love,” she said. “Our bakers care so much about each and every cake they deliver. We have the most amazing group of dedicated and kind volunteers. As a team, we make sure that every child who asks for a cake in Northern Virginia receives one.”

BAKE A CAKE

You don’t need to be a professional baker to

become a volunteer.

“We have bakers of all different ability levels. You just need to have reasonable baking skills,” she said. “As long as it is made with love the children will feel that.”

Bakers deliver the cakes to the agency representative who then presents the cake to the child.

West Germany

1978: It

Us

WEST GERMANY IN 1978 was an interesting place. WWll had ended 33 years earlier and Germany was a divided country. West Germany was almost immobilized by the Red Brigades, a Marxist-Leninist terrorist group, and tensions were high. The

eastern half of Germany had been seized by Russia in 1945 and was now the Deutsche Democratic Republic (DDR). Russian fighters and bombers were based throughout the DDR, a full-fledged member of the Warsaw Pact, and were poised to attack Western Europe. As a young Lieutenant in the US Air Force just transferred to West Germany, Mack McKinney was about to learn several important lessons about preparing for war against Russia and the Warsaw Pact, and about traveling to East Berlin:

1. NATO’s defense posture was nowhere near as strong as advertised; we were (secretly) extremely weakly positioned against the Soviets in the air defense arena;

2. Parts of the West German civilian government did not share the urgency of the US Air Force concerning preparations for wartime air combat against the Warsaw Pact;

3. If the balloon went up, our own US military units would be likely to kill as many US Air Force fighter pilots as the enemy; and

4. East Berlin was fascinating. The often-closet-capitalist Russians there taught me lessons in negotiation and diplomacy, and they were sometimes easier to work with than the US Army.

This talk describes the actual military situation in West Germany in 19781980, not what was advertised by NATO and the Pentagon, and provides a chilling glimpse of the likely outcome of air combat with the Warsaw Pact. The talk ends with humorous short stories about dealing with the Russians while traveling and dining in still-war-torn East Berlin. Mack McKinney has over 45 years of

He holds US patents in radar processing and hyperspectral sensing plus dozens of other patent disclosures in defense-related technologies. His 40 years as a defense contractor including work at Westinghouse Defense and Northrop Grumman on the TPS-70 radar system, the MESA radar on the E- 7 “Wedgetail” AEW&C aircraft, plus various electronic intelligence and other advanced systems.

In the US Air Force, Mack gained hands-on experience with a variety of radar and electronic warfare systems plus the F-15 Eagle weapons system, and he taught air combat tactics for seven years. He was stationed in West Germany from 1977-1980, as a fighter controller and Security Officer for a mobile air defense radar unit. Current Real Estate Market Trends in Northern Virginia: A Guide for Sellers and Buyers

THE REAL ESTATE MARKET in Northern Virginia is dynamic and ever-changing, with trends that affect both sellers and buyers. Whether you're looking to sell your property or purchase a new home, understanding the current market trends is crucial for making informed decisions. In this article, we will explore the latest trends in the Northern Virginia real estate market and their implications for sellers and buyers.

TRENDS FOR SELLERS:

Favorable Seller's Market:

Northern Virginia is experiencing a seller's market, where demand outweighs housing supply. This trend puts sellers in a strong position, as multiple buyers compete for limited inventory. As a seller, you can expect quicker sales and potentially higher offers due to increased competition. However, it is essential to price your property competitively and ensure it stands out among the available listings.

Rising Home Prices:

Home prices in Northern Virginia have been steadily increasing, reflecting strong demand and limited supply. This trend works in favor of sellers, as they have the potential to earn a significant return on their investment. However, it is important to conduct thorough market research and work with a real estate professional to determine an appropriate listing price that aligns with the current market conditions.

Staging and Presentation:

With high buyer demand, it is crucial for sellers to invest in staging and presentation to make their property stand out. Properly staging your home can help create a favorable first impression and increase its perceived value. Professional photography and virtual tours have become increasingly important tools for attracting potential buyers and generating interest in your property.

Conclusion:

TRENDS FOR BUYERS:

Limited Housing Inventory:

Buyers in Northern Virginia are facing a limited housing inventory, leading to increased competition and potential bidding wars. It is crucial for buyers to be prepared, with a pre-approved mortgage and a clear understanding of their budget. Being proactive and working closely with a real estate agent who is well-versed in the local market can help you find and secure the right property in a competitive environment.

Importance of Speed and Flexibility:

In a competitive market, buyers must act swiftly and be flexible with their preferences.

Desirable properties often receive multiple offers within a short period. Being able to make quick decisions, submitting strong offers, and being open to negotiation can increase your chances of successfully purchasing a property in Northern Virginia.

Focus on Affordability and Financing:

As home prices continue to rise, buyers are placing a greater emphasis on affordability and financing options. Exploring loan programs, down payment assistance, and mortgage pre-approval can help buyers navigate the market and find a property that fits within their budget. It is also important to consider the long-term financial implications of homeownership, such as property taxes and maintenance costs.

The current real estate market in Northern Virginia presents opportunities and challenges for both sellers and buyers. Regardless of your position, working with Team Larson Realty can provide you with the right guidance and expertise you need to navigate the current market without fail. For our sellers, we offer an extensive marketing plan and pricing expertise to get your property sold fast and stress free. and Massage Therapy

ADVANTAGE CHIROPRACTIC AND MASSAGE THERAPY provides chiropractic and massage therapy services to the community to treat a variety of problems related to the neuromuscular system to improve the body’s normal function and relieve pain without the use of drugs or surgery.

Chiropractor, Dr. Douglas Smith, Jr., speaks with patients to discuss injuries and other health concerns, assess their physical condition and lifestyle, order tests, administer treatment, and provide advice about their care and pain management.

An adjustment, or manipulation as it is sometimes referred to, is the minor movement of vertebrae in the spine. The object of this movement is to realign vertebrae that have moved out of place for several reasons, ranging from normal activity to trauma such as a car accident.

When these vertebrae are out of place, there is an overall systemic effect from muscles to the central nervous system. Improper alignment hinders the brain’s ability to communicate with the body, preventing us from functioning at our peak.

An adjustment is often achieved by pressure from the chiropractor utilizing hands or an instrument to move a vertebra back into place. This happens with a quick movement and is often without discomfort. You may hear a noise that sounds like cracking knuckles, referred to as joint cavitation. It is the release of gases such as oxygen and nitrogen from the joint.

Tess, front desk, Drs. Smith and Jennifer, and chiropractic assistant Allison

Overall, adjustments are an excellent way to keep the body functioning at its highest level. When the body is in alignment, the body can respond and perform as it was designed to.

Dr. Smith’s first exposure to chiropractic was as a child when his father suffered from migraines. He tried every treatment available with no success. Finally, a friend suggested he go to a chiropractor. When his father received chiropractic care, he no longer had migraines.

Dr. Smith’s personal chiropractic experience came as an athlete. As a high school athlete, as well as being in the military, he was pleased and impressed with how fast chiropractic care got him back into action, even improving his performance.

Dr. Smith’s philosophy is that he wants to help people relieve pain and get back to a normal functioning life as quickly as possible with no drugs and no surgery. Advantage Chiropractic and Massage Therapy believes that optimal health is linked throughout the body, focusing on the nervous system, and thereby, neurological, and musculoskeletal integrity, encourages an innately connected, healthy body from head to toe. However, whenever a patient’s concerns require a different specialty, Advantage Chiropractic and Massage Therapy refers out to other specialists.

For inspiration, Dr. Smith turns to God and family first. What inspires him about his job is having the ability to help people regain normal health and be able to get back to their normal healthy life. The most enjoyable part of his work is patient rapport and being able to truly help people get better, even as a last resort.

Dr. Smith has been in the Warrenton community for the last 24 years and has fallen in love with the area and its people. He enjoys helping people continue to pursue the activities they enjoy without pain or discomfort. He helps improve a patient’s quality of life and hopes to

continue to serve and help his community live to their optimal health.

Dr. Smith lives in Warrenton with his wife Kelly, their two sons Kyle and Logan, and their beloved Labradoodle, Jax. He is active at the Bridge Community Church and teaches Sunday school to middle schoolers.

We're committed to finding individuals with the right heart posture. This innate sense and passion for caring for others defines the EverNest team.

EARLY’S CARPET, INC.

RESIDENTS IN RURAL AREAS don’t need to travel to find quality flooring. Early’s Carpet, Inc. has the largest in-stock inventory of carpets, area rugs, orientals, vinyl, hardwood, laminate, ceramic, and remnants. They are flooring specialists who offer all types of floor coverings, custom drapes, and window treatments; as well as in-home services which include carpet and tile cleaning to water restoration.

At Early’s Carpet, customers can expect qualitydriven customer service and dedication from employees who offer the best values and craftsmanship.

The business began in 1966 in the basement of John and Lorraine Early’s home in Amissville. With few carpet options in the area, John and Lorraine leaned on John’s 12 years of experience in carpet and flooring installations, and Lorraine’s extensive business knowledge, and the store quickly became known as the “one-stop shop for home decorating." Today, the staff members help customers with decorating selections, custom window treatments, blinds, shades, shutters, bedspreads, slipcovers, and reupholstery coordinated all under one roof.

In 1969, the Early’s built a store next to their home. A warehouse followed in 1971, giving Early’s Carpet 11,400 square feet of showroom and inventory space. Years later in 2016, an additional 1,184 square foot office and training space was added, expanding the showroom with the relocation of offices.

Early’s is a family-operated business and will remain that way for the foreseeable future. Lorraine Early co-founded the business with her late

husband John. Today, Lorraine and her daughter, Sonja own and operate the business. Sonja is also the shop manager, decorator, and window treatment specialist.

Lorraine’s son-in-law, Solon Betts, is a ceramic craftsman and manages the installation crews, and is the second Vice President of the company. Victoria “Tori” Braley, Sonja’s sister-in-law, works directly with insurance companies following a water damage claim as manager of the water restoration department. Emergency calls for flooded floors can be handled by their on-call technician 24/7. Simply call 540-937-5500, Early’s can dry your home and put it back as if it never happened.

Sonja and Solon are currently in the process of adding a 64’ x 100’ warehouse addition onto the existing warehouse to house the area rug cleaning equipment and cleaning trucks. The project is anticipated to be finished by October 2023, just in time for the beginning of their 58th year in business.

Visit Early’s online at www.earlyscarpet.com or better yet, stop in to meet with the Early’s knowledgeable staff about your flooring and window treatment needs. They take pride in providing top-notch customer satisfaction and look forward to working with you.
