HAPPY NEW YEAR! We hope that all our readers enjoyed the holiday season and are invigorated by the promise of a new year. I’ve given a lot of thought to experiences that shape and change our life’s trajectory. A friend of mine shared her harrowing experience of breaking her neck in her 20s after being struck by a wave while on vacation at the beach. She spent four weeks with it broken before a diagnosis and emergency surgery. Immediately following that experience, her desire to have a family was hastened. That narrow escape from tragedy impacted her profoundly. Today, she is a devoted mother of two children. If we could zoom out from reality and watch our life paths change direction on some huge timeline, it would be wonderful to see which experiences had the most impact on us. I would guess that these experiences would be the ones that threaten our health and safety, or that of a loved one, and move us in new directions. This month, we meet Dustin and Janelle Yelinek. This young couple sat beside Dustin’s mother and family while she faced a brain tumor diagnosis. Following her recovery, they viewed time a little differently. Today, they embrace moments with friends and family. We also meet entrepreneur Libbi Moore, a Fauquier native, who managed to 昀椀t a lifetime of experiences into her 昀椀rst three decades. Today, she is a strong leader and businesswoman who has set out to help others through challenging times by simplifying and organizing space. Meanwhile, some of our youngest community residents have already grasped what is important. Sophia Harvey, our new Kettle Run student intern, shares with us high school students New Year's gratitude. As we begin a new year, we also offer information from our expert contributors encouraging people to get out there and adventure more in 2024! I hope this year is the best one yet for our readers and that you enjoy this month’s issue!
Aimée

osting 35 family members for Christmas is exactly the way Janelle and Dustin want to wrap up their year. This young couple knows how to work hard and play hard and enjoys sharing their spacious home with family and friends.
H
Dustin originally hails from Pittsburgh but studied at George Mason University when his father was commuting from Northern Virginia. It was there that he met Janelle, a West Coast transplant. The two met in their Art History elective class when they were just 20. They married six years later and settled in Gainesville. Janelle pursued her master's degree in early childhood education and Dustin began working in the technology industry. One year later, she was pregnant with their daughter Adeline. “We had children a little early in our careers,” said Dustin. “I asked Janelle [who was teaching at the time] to give working a try to help us make ends meet.” “She had a year-long contract and we decided to split the difference and give it six months. A week later she had quit,” he laughed. Janelle decided that the best career path for her was to step away from her career and focus on her daughter. Two years later they welcomed their second daughter Deliah. In 2018, they began the search for a new house. Dustin wanted land. Janelle wanted a community. Brookside offered them both. After being in the home for only two years, Dustin’s mother was unexpectedly diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following treatment, all were thankful that she fully recovered, but the experience left a deep impact on the couple. “I have two brothers and one sister. We all moved from Pittsburgh to Virginia and live near one another,” he said. The family is so close that every Sunday, there is a large family get-together. “After church, we all meet back at our house and spend the afternoon together,” he said. The family generally stays well into the evening. To say this is a tight-knit family, would be an understatement. Having nearly lost his mother, he and Janelle realized that their house was so much more than a home. It had become a family-gathering venue. A place where memories are made and time together is spent. To that end, they view each house project from a new perspective. 6

We would like to thank the Property Collective team for sponsoring the Resident Feature. “We prioritize our projects based on how the project will encourage people to gather,” said Dustin. The signi昀椀cant investment of adding a pool was on their minds before his mother became ill. It took a back seat during her illness and afterward, Dustin and Janelle saw it through a new lens. “When I think of all the memories my mother could have missed out on, I can’t believe we almost reconsidered the pool,” said Dustin. Today, Dustin and Janelle can easily recall lazy hours spent with family and friends lingering poolside, enjoying one another’s company, and swimming with their daughters and their friends. Janelle, who is one of three children in her family, appreciates the size and closeness of Dustin’s family. “My brother and sister were born when I was nearly a teen,” she said. As her siblings age, they have grown closer. As a mother, she appreciates the close relationships her daughters

With both of their children in school this year, Janelle is looking forward to new beginnings. “For so many years, they were my full-time job. It took some adjustment for me to become accustomed to not having at least one of them home,” she said. To 昀椀ll her free time, she joined a Bible Study Group and has taken on a role at the girls’ nearby Christian school where she serves on the Board as an elementary representative and serves on the parents association. “I am happy to be in the building with the girls and dusting off my degree just a little,” she said. Between these commitments, she focuses on self-care at a local gym.

When the Christmas crowd departed and Santa’s presents lay open and enjoyed, Dustin and Janelle settled in for time together and looked forward to a quiet New Year’s Eve. “Since the girls are still young, we put them to bed and watch the ball drop while we sip champagne,” said Janelle. In the New Year, they are looking forward to much of the same. Watching their girls experience new activities like gymnastics and piano, spending more time together as a family at home and in Florida to visit Janelle’s family, and escaping alone to their beloved city Charleston, South Carolina, to reconnect. The Yelineks are grateful for their new community, its proximity to their old community, and all the future holds for them.

very year, I select a new year theme to improve myself in three major areas: BODY, MIND, and SOUL. 2023’s theme was to be patient. As I am simply the transportation expert in this magazine, I will leave the body to the trainers and coaches, and the mind to the internet, which is vast in information.
E
So, what do transportation and the soul have in common? To me, everything, yet you will have to stay with me to see if I make the connection for you. When I got my 昀椀rst bike, my world grew by allowing me to get away from my parents and sister to spend time with friends. That bike allowed me to create new adventures for me and my friends that didn’t have wheels. Each time I jumped on the bike, sometimes with a friend on my handlebars, I was excited for the adventures ahead.
Adventure Mo re i n 2 0 2 4
Fast forward to being an adult, and that bike has been replaced with a vehicle. Those adventures have been replaced with work commutes, taking kids all the places, and running errands. Fun adventures seem few and far between these days, especially if you have kids (like me). Some days, it seems like those memories and desires for fun and adventure are what get me through the day. If you can relate based on last year, this new year theme is for you! ADVENTURE MORE! You are probably thinking, I don’t have the time, resources, or mental bandwidth

to do all the planning, and I feel the same. I am a workaholic and a perfectionist. So, if I can’t plan the perfect experience and get all the stars to align, I typically throw in the towel on adventure. Adventure doesn’t require an airplane. It doesn’t even mean leaving your home. Adventure is about seeing and trying new things. Turning off the working brain and being present in new experiences with others. Order or make food from different cultures, but make it an immersive experience. If you want to get the kids involved, make it a fun learning experience. Or pick a random destination within an hour of you and make it a day excursion or just an evening, taking in new surroundings, experiences, and food. If you made it this far, thank you, hopefully, this inspired you to bring more joy to your soul in 2024. Being inspired to adventure more is a start, having a plan is the key to action. If you need help with that plan or want to try something new, destinationdatenight.com is what I am using in 2024. They’re a new service based out of Warrenton taking the leg-work out of planning adventures. Their service provides a luxury ride-share service connecting Warrenton to city destinations like D.C. and Alexandria that feel so close yet so far away. Check out their calendar of rotating destinations and reserve your seats. It's really that simple. Perhaps we’ll even bump into one another. See you in the new year!

aised in Fauquier County, Libbi Moore found herself a widow at the unimaginable age of just 29. “Sean was diagnosed with cancer three weeks after our wedding. We spent our 18-month marriage 昀椀ghting cancer and insurance,” she said.
R
Once, for as long as six weeks, Libbi never left Sean’s side as he lay in a hospital bed. She created thorough systems and organizational tools and delegated responsibilities to others to help maintain her home during this time. Never knowing when Sean may need to rush to the hospital, Libbi would “reset” the house each night. “The house was always ready for pet- or house-sitters in case we had another emergency and long hospital stay,” she said.
When Sean died in 2013, Libbi found herself living in a home for a young married couple, rather than a grieving widow. Slowly, and through unimaginable grief, she began the painful process of making room for her future by putting away the pieces from her past. “I cleared out a bedroom and closet to make room for a roommate, then two,” she said. A backyard storage shed held remnants from an event that Sean himself hadn't been ready to deal with. “I realized [the shed] was full of Patrick and Libbi with their three daughters
Libbi was a history teacher at the time. She stayed on top of her students’ papers, and her lesson plans, and had weeks of substitute plans ready at a moment’s notice. things from his parents that he hadn’t ever wanted to address after his mom died unexpectedly years before. Old curtains his mom had made, his childhood toys, his parents’ clothing, dishes, decorations, and more. Little by little I offered each item to his friends and family and the response was usually the same - no thank you. We have enough. Most people were content to have a bracelet with his name on it, or a pair of his sunglasses,” said Libbi. In time, she made peace by keeping only the most cherished items from Sean, including jewelry, photos, and small keepsakes. As the fog lifted, Libbi made travel plans to go to Italy with a friend. Before her trip, she received a call. We’ve been trying to keep this from you as long as we could to give you time to grieve Sean, but it’s time we let you know, that we’ve noticed a lot of signs that your dad has dementia and he needs your help, her father’s friend told her. She packed books about dementia to learn more about her father’s condition while she was abroad. When she returned, she relied heavily on her newly honed organizational skills to help with her father. She
© Best Version Media sorted out 昀椀nances and papers, downsized her father from the family home to an apartment, and then assisted living. She was her father’s conservator and guardian. The second time she had been appointed to these roles for a terminal loved one. By this time, Libbi had reconnected with a high school classmate, Patrick Moore and the two had married. The couple was also caring for their one-year-old daughter. “It makes me sad to think about how much time I spent organizing all of this on my own instead of spending that time with her,” she said. For nearly a decade, Libbi had cared for a terminally ill loved one, or was grieving their loss. When the clouds of her experiences lifted and she was able to process what she had been through, she decided to put what she had learned from her experiences to good use. In January 2022, Libbi launched Neatly Ever After, a professional organizing business that helps others maximize time with loved ones, even in times of chaos and grief. Her business offers more than organization. “I’ve helped widows, grieving people, and those who suffer from ADHD, anxiety, or health issues affecting mobility, empty nesters who don’t want to burden their loved ones later in life, and plenty of overwhelmed moms without a village. It’s usually a female hiring us, often against her husband’s wishes. We always laugh and say we’re going to win him over and we do! By the end of the project, after seeing the work that goes into properly organizing, and how life-changing it is for the family, the formerly reluctant husbands are the ones who are ready to hire us to organize the whole house,” said Libbi. In two years, the NEA team has completed over 150 projects, many with repeat clients, and performed small jobs, as well as larger ones, such as organizing garages and un昀椀nished basements. Her team is trained to be true organizers with the emotional intelligence to work with people going through a challenging season. “Simply put, I hire people I’d feel comfortable hiring to organize my own home or a loved one’s home. They’ve all been through signi昀椀cant losses in their lifetime, so they just get it when someone is grieving. I can teach organization, but I can’t teach empathy,” she said. Neatly Ever After is hiring. With inquiries, contact Libbi Moore at hello@neatlyeverafter.com.

Glow Up Inside Out: The Playful Path to Radiant Skin By Natalie S., bewellcompany
lright, folks, let's embark on a journey to achieve that oh-so-desired glow! It's not just about slathering on potions and lotions; it's about embracing a lifestyle that gets your skin beaming from the inside out. As the Skincare Chef, I'm here to spill the beans on how to have fun while nurturing your skin from within!
A
1. Feast on Goodness Say hello to a rainbow on your plate! Munch on those vibrant fruits and veggies packed with vitamins A, C, and E – think juicy berries, crunchy carrots, and leafy greens. Dive into omega-3-rich foods like salmon and walnuts for that extra skin-loving boost. And don't forget your water bottle - hydrate like it's your skin's best friend (which it is)! Sipping on bone broth and hot tea in the cooler months is encouraged. 2. Stress Less, Glow More Cue the zen music! Stress isn't your skin's BFF. Take a walk outside, embrace yoga, read a book, or whatever 昀氀oats your boat to unwind and keep cortisol levels in check. And please, beauty sleep is no myth – catch those Zs for refreshed, happy skin in the morning.
3. Sweat it Out (Glow, Baby, Glow!) Time to get moving or hit the sauna! Break a sweat, and let those pores breathe, as sweating is our body's way of naturally detoxing. Make a big pot and invite your friends and family over, this one is a keeper. The additions of crispy uncured bacon and a splash of red wine vinegar right before serving take this dish to the next level! I always suggest buying organic and local ingredients when you can.

How To Make: Sauté the 昀椀rst 6 ingredients in a soup pot just until fragrant and tender, I also season with S&P here. Then pour the clam juice, lemon juice, and broth into the pot. Season with S&P. Cover and simmer for 15 mins. Now cook your bacon until crispy, and set aside. Lastly add the clams and coconut milk, cover, and heat until just heated through. When serving add a splash of red wine vinegar to each bowl along with a few pieces of bacon. ENJOY!

© Best Version Media 4 Ways Diet and Nutrition ENHANCE CHIROPRACTIC CARE By Dr. Jennifer Ely, Advantage Chiropractic & Massage Therapy
he human body relies on various interconnected systems to maintain good health. Chiropractors and other health practitioners often take a holistic approach, known as functional medicine, to address patients' issues. When receiving chiropractic treatment, it's common for your chiropractor to inquire about your diet, evaluate your nutritional health, and suggest nutritional therapy alongside joint adjustments. Here are four ways that diet and nutrition can enhance chiropractic care:
T
Support for Healthy Bones: Chiropractors frequently work with individuals who have bone health issues that affect their posture and comfort. Conditions like osteoporosis, which leads to reduced bone density and vertebral fractures, can be addressed through diet and nutrition. Your chiropractor might recommend increasing your intake of bone-building proteins, minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium, as well as consuming fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and K. Additionally, reducing the consumption of salt, alcohol, and caffeine can improve bone health. Anti-In昀氀ammatory Bene昀椀ts: In昀氀ammation often accompanies musculoskeletal pain. Injuries, both acute and chronic, can trigger in昀氀ammation and swelling, while autoimmune conditions can result in joint problems. Gout, for example, can be exacerbated by consuming too many in昀氀ammatory foods. Chiropractic treatment can reduce in昀氀ammation by realigning joints and improving nerve function. Your chiropractor might
recommend replacing speci昀椀c in昀氀ammatory foods with natural in昀氀ammation 昀椀ghters. Less Stress on Weight-Bearing Joints: An unhealthy diet, with excessive calories or fatty foods, can lead to obesity, which can contribute to chronic health problems and damage weight-bearing joints. Chiropractic care can help with chronic pain, and your chiropractor may suggest dietary changes to help you lose weight safely. Weight loss can reduce stress on your lower back, hips, knees, and ankles. Additionally, chiropractic adjustments that alleviate musculoskeletal pain may encourage you to exercise more, aiding in weight loss. More Ef昀椀cient Recovery From Injuries: Chiropractors often treat acute or chronic injuries involving the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Addressing alignment issues is crucial, but diet can also play a role in recovery. Speci昀椀c proteins called leucines, found in certain foods like cheeses, meats, 昀椀sh, nuts, and seeds, can accelerate muscle healing. By incorporating these foods into your diet, you can support a more ef昀椀cient recovery from injuries. To restore or maintain your overall health and wellness, consider scheduling a consultation at Corner Chiropractic Center. Their team will assess your joint alignment, diet, nutrition, and other factors to create a personalized chiropractic and nutritional plan tailored to your needs.

experT ConTriBuTor
Brought to you by Laura Larson, Broker at Team Larson Realty and Ratified Title Group
A
s we approach the new year, we wanted to provide you with a snapshot of the current real estate landscape and what it might mean for home prices in 2024.
Housing inventory is currently extremely low with sales down by 22% in 2023 from 2022. More homes available for sale could mean increased options for buyers and, potentially, less upward pressure on prices.
Steady Ascent: During 2022, the Northern Virginia median list price for homes was around $650,000. As we round off this year, it stands at $680,000, per MLS data. While this indicates an increase, it's relatively steady compared to the earlier rapid surges.
The Big Question - What's Next? The million-dollar question is, what's the outlook for home prices in 2024? While experts generally foresee prices holding steady or continuing to rise, some are predicting a modest price correction.
Fed's Pause: The recent pause in interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve might encourage more buyer activity. Federal Reserve of昀椀cials left interest rates unchanged in their 昀椀nal policy decision of 2023 and forecast that they will cut borrowing costs 3 times in the coming year. Although the federal funds rate doesn't directly affect mortgage rates, lenders often adjust their rates in sync with the Fed's decisions.
5 Reasons Why Buying a Home Right Now Makes Sense 1. Buy Now, Re昀椀nance Later 2. Home Prices May Go Up 3. Less Competition 4. Inventory Is Going Up 5. If It’s the Right Time for You, Then It Never Makes Sense to Wait
Easing Tensions: With the expected easing of interest rates it is expected to see more sellers listing their homes and more buyers coming back to the market to purchase.

© Best Version Media New Year Gratitude By Sophia Harvey, Student Intern, Junior at Kettle Run High School
hen asked what they were grateful for, 52 percent of people at Kettle Run High School said their friends and family. “My friends push me out of my comfort zone, and I enjoy what I normally would not do without them,” says a sixteenyear-old. Humanity is naturally drawn to each other; other people affect us in ways that we don't always realize.
W
Family is a big part of life for many people. “I’m grateful for my husband and children, they give my life meaning,” said one teacher. A family helps you through the worst times and the best times. They are your rock, and they make you feel safe. Families are the baseline of encouragement for ideas. The 昀椀rst people to push you to be greater are almost always your parents. When asked what she is grateful for, a 14-year-old replied instantly, “My dad, he's always there for me.” Parents are some of the most important people one can have the pleasure of knowing and loving. One student expressed, “I am grateful for my mom and dad, I don’t thank them enough.” Even when one’s not aware of it, the people surrounding them are full of love for them. Friends are the people we choose to be in our lives to let us be unapologetically ourselves. “I am grateful for my support system because they allow me to be myself and not feel bad about anything,” says a local junior. In the days of social media, we are constantly comparing

ourselves to other people but having a support system to remind you that you are loved is a wonderful thing for all people. The people who come into your life and choose to love you help ensure your happiness. “They always put a smile on my face,” responds a seventeen-year-old. Friends can help to make you laugh and cheer you up on a bad day; friends are kind. Half of adults mention their job when asked what they are grateful for. One said, “I am grateful to work somewhere where I enjoy what I do.” Having a space where you can work and enjoy what you do is a wonderful environment. It inspires greatness. A job can be another presence in your life that is a part of your structure. Jobs introduce so many new and exciting experiences in your life that can make you grateful for living. Gratitude is the idea of having an appreciation for something or someone's kindness and presence. Having things or people to love helps the sel昀椀shness in the world decrease. Humanity is better for having gratitude in the world. Who or what are you grateful for this this New Year? Sophia Harvey is the president of Kettle Run's book club, a member of the Student Library Advisory Board, and an avid reader.
© Best Version Media Captivating Musical Experience "SONGS for a NEW WORLD" Comes to Manassas
By Matt Moore, Triune Entertainment, LLC
riune Entertainment announces the upcoming production of Songs for a New World at the Wind River Theater at the ARTfactory in Manassas, Virginia. This powerful and emotionally charged musical will captivate audiences with its spellbinding storytelling and sensational musical score.
T
Songs for a New World features music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown and explores universal themes of love, choice, and the human experience through a collection of interconnected songs. According to Brown, Songs for a New World is, “about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.” The production promises to be a visual and auditory feast featuring four talented performers: Shakil Azizi, Cate Murray, Sarah Bright, and Joshua Ewalt. Shakil Azizi joins the cast as Man 1 and sings one of the standout songs of the show: “King of the World.” Azizi was most recently seen as Frederick Barrett in Titanic the Musical with the Good Shepherd Players. Other critically acclaimed roles in the Northern Virginia area include HotBlades Harry in Workhouse Art Center’s Urinetown, Henrik in Reston Community Players’ A Little Night Music, and Clopin in The Arlington Players’ The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Azizi also performed internationally as Chase/Jake in Paw Patrol Live! Race to the Rescue. Cate Murray plays Woman 1 and will move audiences with her performances of “Christmas Lullaby” and “I’m Not Afraid of Anything.” Murray is a Virginia native and a graduate of James Madison University. She has a strong af昀椀nity for historically informed performances and has portrayed several dramatic roles such as Magda Sorel in Menotti’s The Consul and Third Lady in Mozart’s Die Zauber昀氀öte, as well as comedic roles including the Faerie Queen in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe and Marthe in Gounod’s Faust. Murray was a Young Artist with Opera Roanoke and also served as a musical theatre composer/arranger, vocal director, and music teacher in the Warrenton area. She recently vocal directed Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Once Upon a Mattress at Fauquier Community Theatre. Sarah Bright as Woman 2 truly shines in the number, “Stars and the Moon.” Bright is a recent transplant to the Northern Virginia area after 15 years in the Chicago theatre scene. She has many international credits in Germany and the United Kingdom in productions of Proof as Catherine, Rabbit Hole as Becca, Bus Stop as Grace, Soldier’s Heart as Casey Johnson, Company as Harry, and City of Angels as Gabbi/Bobbi. Local audiences may recognize her from her recent portrayal of Christine

Colgate in Fauquier Community Theatre’s production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Rounding out the talented quartet is Joshua Ewalt as Man 2. Ewalt is a Northern Virginia local and works with several theatre and choral groups, most recently Upper Room Theater and Gainesville Community Choir. His previous theatrical roles include Mr. George Banks in Mary Poppins, Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly!, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Sebastian in Rodgers and Hammerstien’s Cinderella, and Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods with Upper Room Theatre Ministry. Ewalt has several beautiful vocal moments in the show, especially in “The World was Dancing.” He is looking forward to bringing Jason Robert Brown's well loved classic to life, along with his fellow performers. Director Matt Moore assembled an award winning team for this production. The production is expected to transcend traditional storytelling through the innovative technical design from Dan Martin and an exceptional live orchestra conducted by Chris Smith. "I have loved this show for many years, but now I feel the stars have truly aligned for this production to happen with these talented collaborators," said Moore. "We are excited to bring 'Songs for a New World' to the Wind River Theater in Manassas, and I know it will leave a lasting impression on our audiences." All of the elements come together in what promises to be a theatrical event that will linger in the hearts and minds of audiences long after the 昀椀nal curtain falls. This production comes on the heels of Triune’s critically acclaimed world premier of Peter Filichia’s “Larry the Big-Time Broadway Producer.” Triune is an independent, non-Equity production company dedicated to providing artists with opportunities to direct and perform in exciting and original ways. Triune’s mission is to create exceptional entertainment experiences while being respectful to its audiences and participants, and to provide opportunity and access to the best in live production, publishing, training and education, and beyond. Triune Entertainment’s Songs For a New World has four performances on January 19, 20, and 21 at the Wind River Theater in the ARTfactory of Manassas at 9419 Battle Street, Manassas, VA 20110.
