As I write this, the world is dealing with a worldwide pandemic that is stressing our resources and seeping into our community. I hope that when readers open this issue, our greatest concerns have been alleviated and we are returning to life as usual. But today, on the cusp of cancellations everywhere there is one thing to recognize, our sense of community. Fauquier County has a tremendously caring community. Just today, I read on Facebook a thread of people offering to help in any way they can to ensure students who rely on school lunches for food do not go hungry if school is cancelled. Another post recommended InstaCart that will deliver groceries from local markets to help keep our small businesses operating. Local offices are changing their work from home policies and permitting employees to bring their children to work if school is cancelled. We have a big-hearted community. I experienced this first-hand six years ago during the traumatic birth of our third child. Our family landed on prayer lists from people who were truly strangers. So, while I write this, there is great uncertainly and updated confirmed coronavirus cases hourly, I take comfort knowing that I am surrounded by a strong community. This month, it is a pleasure to introduce the Maloney family. This family has done a lot for our community over the past four decades, and even dating prior to that. From the care of animals, services to marginalized community members to their current business of running a tennis club, Derek and Beth are here to meet their members needs. Hope Heals is a new freestore in Warrenton and our feature charity. And yes, you read that correctly, it is a freestore. They accept donations that are given away, at no cost, to anyone who is in need, no questions asked. This is a wonderful service and another great example of the generosity of our community. In this issue we also share news about the Kettle Run After Prom, a wonderful event to prom attendees, their guests and even students who don’t plan to attend prom. This fun event gives students a place to go that is safe from at-risk behavior on one of the most dangerous nights of the year for students. And finally, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and Preschool is collecting Mr. Potato Head toys as a tribute to 6 -year-old Wyatt Norwood who was tragically killed during a home shooting on Valentine’s Day. This spring I hope we can all focus on the positive and the many blessings we have in our lives and take care of those who could use a hand. I hope everyone is safe and healthy and remains that way throughout the year.

Catering to Community Needs Runs in the
{ MALONEY FAMILY } By Aimée O’Grady | Photography by The Little Photo Shop
or over forty years, the Maloney family has been serving the local community. But, their story of public service begins much earlier than that.
of Detroit; a position he held until 1922 when he was appointed senator on November 29 of that same year. He served as senator until his death on October 22, 1936.
After working alongside Henry Ford in the early 20th century, a man by the name of James Couzens began a political career. In 1902, Couzens was a stakeholder in the Ford Motor Company. Less than five years later in 1906, he found himself Vice President and General Manager of the company. In 1919, he left Ford and that same year was elected Mayor
Prominent figures in the community, the Maloney family never stopped their community service. Once settled at Dog Patch Farm, Betty, as Edith was referred, began to take in stray dogs. Her passion for animal welfare was so strong that she ultimately founded the Fauquier SPCA from the farm before it was moved to its current location.
Couzens’ youngest daughter, Edith, married John Maloney, and the couple made their way to New York where they became a part of the equine community. They split their time between New York and Virginia horse country before finally settling in Warrenton at Dog Patch Farm on Springs Road in 1944.
Her care extended beyond animals. In the 1950s during the days of segregation, Betty observed that members of the African American community did not have a pool available to them. She set out to change that. She hired Red Cross instructors and opened the Dog Patch farm pool to African American families during the summer months from the 1950s to the early 70s. The family still meets people who fondly remember swimming at the farm pool during their youth. Fast forward another 50 years, Betty’s grandson Derek continues to serve the community much like his great grandparents and grandparents. He and his wife, Beth, own and operate Chestnut Forks Tennis Club in Warrenton. An inheritance for Derek that he wasn’t entirely sure he wanted. “I grew up playing

Resident Feature tennis and when it was time to work, I looked for something else.” After a few years at college he spent time working at Airlie Conference Center, just down the road from the club. While there, he started playing tennis again and reignited his passion for it. From there he took an instructor job at the club and became the tennis director. In 2010, it was time for him to step up his game. “My father was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and received treatment in Utah. Management of the club fell to me,” he says. “There was a little bit of a learning curve and I ruffled a few feathers, but I found my rhythm pretty quickly.” Today, he is fortunate to still have his father to turn to for advice, who found himself in remission two years following his treatment. The club’s beginning is yet another story of a Maloney listening and responding to a community need. Lindsay and Chip, Derek’s parents, attended a board of supervisors meeting in 1975 with a few ideas for a new business. Feedback from the community was that there was interest in tennis, which was extremely popular at the time. “There was nothing like it around here,” says Derek. “My parents bought a piece of land and built four indoor and two outdoor courts and began the club.” The land was formerly the site of chestnut trees, although none remained by the time the club was built. Within a few years adjacent land was purchase and the pool was added. A full-service tennis club was now available to the community. Beth was friends with a member of the club and worked out there. She and Derek struck up a friendship and leaned on one another during their respective divorces. When they found themselves single, they realized there may be more than a casual friendship between them. “We tested the waters very gently with our children.” The couple brought five children in total to the relationship. “We planned a few playdates to see if the kids got along.” As fate would have it, they did. The couple began dating in 2012 and married in 2017. They added another child to the family when Beth had their youngest son, Christian. “We are the modernday blended Brady Bunch with three girls and three boys,” she laughs. Payton is a freshman at Kettle Run, boys Bryce and Brayden are in fifth grade, girls Blakely and Kyrra attend fourth grade and Christian is in kindergarten. { continued on next page }

Resident Feature With all the kids in school, today Beth is able to work alongside her husband at the club. She manages the pool and café, which was added during a major overhaul two years ago. “It wasn’t easy to convince my father to go ahead with the renovation. I asked him for his trust more than once,” recalls Derek. Always working to build community, the renovation involved removing all walls that were not load bearing. “I gave up my office for a member seating area,” says Derek. “I want our members to see me and know that I am available to them if they need something or just want to talk.” Clearly inheriting leadership skills and a strong sense of community from his lineage, Derek is excited to be sharing his passion for tennis and the club with the community at-large and the small community the couple is raising. “All the kids play tennis,” says Beth. And as if management of a club open seven-days each week isn’t enough to fill a schedule, there are the activities of six children to manage and time together as a family. As impossible as it sounds, the couple are managing to do all that. There is a lot of coordination and a little bit of luck, “The kids’ bus has a stop right next to the club, so we can have them dropped off when needed,” says Beth. And they co-parent with their ex-spouses. “We have all the kids together every other weekend. Off weekends, Christian is alone. Sometimes he misses his brothers and sisters, other times he’s pretty happy to have us to himself,” she says of their modern family lifestyle. Together the family attends basketball, tennis and football games and make time every year to getaway to Kitty Hawk where they enjoy a beachfront house. This summer Beth is looking forward to a family reunion with her younger brother who lives in Michigan and is planning a wedding. But if they children have their choice, they would be content to stay home. “We have a great neighborhood,” says Derek. “The kids love having friends over and just being together at home,” adds Beth.

Charity Spotlight
HOPE HEALS By Lindsey Henderson
At Hope Heals our dream is a community built on relationships based on mutual aid and cooperation. We are a non-profit organization with a desire to use the distribution of free items as a catalyst for change! Our goal is to change individual relationships with material goods while combating lower income through empowerment. Free clothes may just seem like a drop in the bucket compared to the huge list of needs we see walk through that door every week, but maybe it’s money they’re not having to spend now on clothes and shoes for their kids and can now save. Maybe it’s $100 they can put towards moving out of the nearby hotels or gas in their car to get to work. Our hearts are to see lives forever changed through not only the giving of clothing and household items, but also through mentorship, relationship, and love. Love is free. Love is a gift. Love changes everything. We make every possible effort here to create a safe space for sharing. We invite conversation! We want to sip coffee, share a donut, and hear your story. And when you leave here, we’re fighting for you. We’re hunting down larger items for your family household, we’re helping you look for employment, we’re delivering winter jackets
Are you ready to get organized with custom cabinets and benches? These were built in a neighboring home in Warrenton!
and shoes to your hotel room because you don’t have the gas money to make it back here. We look at every single need on these sheets of paper and actively try to help in any way we can.
We are open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10-1 and Thursday evenings from 5-8. Donations are also accepted during this time or Monday through Wednesday by appointment only.
Since we’ve been open in October, we’ve served over 300 people in Fauquier and surrounding counties and we’ve had some amazing stories along the way. One gentleman could go back to work if he only had a pair of steel toe boots. Done! They were able to earn the last bit of money they needed to move out of the Jefferson Motel and into their new house on Haiti Street. We’ve geared up single pregnant scared moms who have nothing and brought them hope for the new life growing inside of them. We’ve found temporary shelter for the homeless, been a listening ear and a warm embrace for ladies who have come here hurting and broken. One of the reviews online said, “I not only received clothes for my family, but I also left with hope. The ladies inside made me feel so welcome and I wasn’t ashamed. I also got lots of hugs which I needed.”
We accept donations of gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, and household linens throughout the week and can provide tax donation slips for anyone who would like one. We take the utmost care in sifting through everything that comes into the basement. Only the best makes it into the store! If we don’t love it, we don’t pass it on. What we don’t use is taken to another organization in Woodbridge to earn other non-profit organizations $0.20 per pound. The rest goes to textile recycling at the landfill, where it is repurposed and reused into secondhand clothing often sold to third-world nations. Clothes that can’t be reused have their fibers repurposed into other useful materials, like the stuffing for the seats of our cars. We invite people to shop with us once a month unless there’s a dire need for something specific.
Everything we have here is free. There are no stipulations for shopping, no vouchers needed, and no judgment for whatever situation you’re in. All are welcome to come and be blessed!

SPRING
CLEANING
101
Preparation For Spring Market! By Dawn Arruda
Whenever I am working with a seller to prepare their home for the market, I always start with, “There are two things that are free that will make the most impact; Decluttering and Cleaning”. Decluttering......it doesn’t matter if your are moving to downsize or to upsize, decluttering is the best way to not only prepare your home for pictures and a make a great presentation for potential buyers, it is also a great time to go through each room and decide what is coming with you or what might fit in your new home. You can decide whether to keep it, sell it or get rid of those items. When I walk the rooms with my clients, I let them know what furniture may need to be removed or stored to allow the room to feel bigger. I recommend keeping only a few items to give it a homey touch, without too much clutter. The
best rule to remember is “less is more”. You want the future homeowner to see how the space can be functional for their family. When decluttering your home, it is always best to do one room at a time. You can make piles or have colored tape to tag items you want to stay, donate, sell or discard. If you don’t love it or haven’t used the item in some time, then it should probably go. There are many great ways to sell your items online if you have the time. Try to start early so you don’t get bogged down with the task at hand, which is to clear out and pack up. If my clients feel completely overwhelmed and the budget allows, I may call in a professional organizer or stager to assist them.
Looking for your perfect home? We can help you. We do this every day.

Cleaning......enough said! If you cannot get down on your hands and knees and clean between all the cracks/crevices, then it might be better to find a professional who will do a really deep clean after decluttering. It will be some of the best money spent to prepare your home for sale. At the end of the day, decluttering and deep cleaning can be an emotional and physically demanding task. Some people are equipped to handle it better than others; that’s ok. Just remember that the end goal is to get the most money with the least amount of time and effort. The work you put in early will definitely pay off later.
The skills to do well. The moral compass to do good.

Choosing the Right Dance Studio By Kalie Lasley | Photography by Henry Oviedo Choosing the right dance studio for your young dancer can be a daunting task. There is a long list of things that should be considered — instructor expertise, location, tuition, the goal of dance lessons, plus recommendations from neighbors and friends among them. This article is intended to help you navigate through some of these questions to find the very best dance home for your family. A solid foundation of ballet technique applies to all dancers (even a Broadway dancer needs solid ballet technique) – it assures future success for students who may decide to pursue dance while providing recreational dancers with quality, safe instruction. Do not be afraid to ask questions at a prospective studio, have your dancer take a trial class, and observe classes at different levels of training. If you see students working hard and smiling, a relaxed yet structured environment, and teachers who converse with you and carefully guide students, it is a good start. When joining a dance studio, you are entrusting the care, health and development of your child to the instructors. Therefore, I recommend paying close attention to each individual who will potentially work with your young dancer. The world of professional ballet is a mystery to most parents, so how do you vet an instructor and read between the lines of a teacher’s credentials? While investigating the studio’s website, start by reading through the teacher profiles; look for training highlights, where did they train and with whom? Do they have professional performance experience with a major national or international company? What teaching certifications do they possess? Often an endless list of former instructors is a sign of filler for a bio. A child’s body is malleable and can be easily damaged by well-meaning but unqualified instructors, so certainly the teacher should be trained and certified. Dance students, even at an

Voted 2018 Residential Realtor of the Year for Fauquier County advanced level, are not qualified instructors, so make sure that those leading your young dancer have been trained to teach. We hear parents say, “I will take my child to a professional school if they decide that they are serious about dance.” While this sounds logical, there are some holes in this line of thought. Correcting or undoing poor training or muscle memory can be extremely challenging. Also, children become attached to their schools, fellow dancers, and teachers, and it can be hard to move on to a new studio with a new dance family. Giving the gift of solid dance training opens a world of possibilities for your child. So start your young dancer at a good studio early on. Another thing that we hear parents say is, ”I just want my child to have fun,” as if quality instruction negates fun! This is quite to the contrary. When students are placed in a loving, structured environment with qualified teachers who love what they do and understand the developmental level of the children whom they teach, the outcome produces physically and mentally sound and happy dancers who are poised to realize their greatest potential. While location and tuition are factors to consider when choosing a home studio for today’s busy families, the best studio for your small dancers may not be the closest. I would recommend visiting (and researching) all of the studios you are considering in the area before settling on one. You may find an extra 10 minutes in the car provides your child with an extraordinary dance experience and for that, it is well worth it. Ultimately the goal is to provide quality instruction for your investment of time and resources and secure a positive environment at a school where long term friendships will thrive. Good dance instruction will imbue grace, poise, self-confidence, an excellent work ethic and discipline into your son’s or daughter’s life and provide them with a lifetime of benefit.

Recipe Corner
Triple
Berry Scones By Anita Parris Soule
T
hese Triple Berry Crème Fraîche Scones are pretty much my dream scone. Berries, vanilla, and butter are all things that make me swoon and these scones have them all. This recipe is a riff on my vanilla bean scones which are a favorite around here. I make these a little thicker, and they are just so soft, tender, and bursting with a combo of sweet, juicy strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. The dough is scented with one of my favorite flavors: fresh vanilla bean. And with a nod to my French heritage, they are made just a bit more elegant with the addition of crème fraîche. These scones are the perfect weekend treat (or any day, really) but would be especially nice on an Easter brunch buffet. These would also make great shortcakes with some freshly whipped cream and berries sandwiched between.
The idea for these scones came one day when my husband and I were on a walk/run on a beautiful back road near our house. There were wild climbing rose bushes just starting to bloom all along the roadside with their pretty little white blossoms and buds and glorious scent. They look a lot like berry brambles, and I knew the moment I saw them that I had to create a berry recipe just so I could snip a few of those flowers and use them in my photos. I love finding inspiration in the littlest, most special places. I hope I never lose that. Wild flowers are another thing that makes me swoon and they are the only flowers for me. My gorgeous, darling, sweeter-than-the-glaze-on-these-scones husband surprises me with them from time to time. I will never, ever get tired of that. Sigh… Swoon… Ok, back to the scones. If breakfast in bed is your thing, or if you want to surprise someone with breakfast in bed, these scones are the perfect recipe as they are better if prepared the night before. I must confess, breakfast in bed is not my thing. Getting up, having coffee, doodling around in the kitchen in my pj’s, that’s more my style. Plus, the thought of trays of food and hot coffee teetering haphazardly up the stairs is the opposite of relaxing. It all just sounds way more romantic than it actually is—and I’m a super romantic person! Do people really have breakfast in bed? Or is it just in movies and commercials? No matter where you prefer to eat your breakfast, you (or your kids) can easily whip these scones up the night before, stash them in the freezer overnight, bake them the morning of (yes, straight from the freezer) and enjoy a freshly baked, still warm-fromthe-oven scone. You can thank me and those cute little, recipe-inspiring blossoms as you bite into a warm, tender Triple Berry Crème Fraîche Scone. These really don’t need anything else, but who said anything about necessity? While they’re still warm, split one open and slather it with salted butter and really good jam. Raspberry jam would be my choice. If you really want to get carried away and you’re a super planner, make some homemade crème fraîche! Here’s the recipe I followed: Homemade Crème Fraîche. Just ignore most of the comments. I used Horizon Organic Heavy Cream which is ultra-pasteurized and I used Lucerne cultured low fat buttermilk. I doubled the recipe and let it sit in a covered mason jar at room temp next to our coffee pot which is basically always on. It took 24 hours for the cream to thicken, but it was well worth the wait. It thickens more in the fridge too. It is the best, freshest tasting crème fraîche! And so much cheaper than store-bought which can also be hard to find.

Ingredients Scones:
dry mixture: • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting • 1/3 cup granulated sugar • 2 tablespoons baking powder (I use aluminum-free baking powder) • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 2 sticks (1/2 pound) unsalted butter, diced into very small cubes and kept very cold berries: (use any combo you like) • 1/2 cup blueberries • 1/2 cup raspberries • 1/2 cup diced strawberries wet mixture: • 1 cup crème fraîche (you could use full fat sour cream or full fat greek yogurt as well)
• • • •
2-4 tablespoons heavy cream, plus more for brushing seeds from 1 vanilla bean 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 egg
Glaze: • • • •
1 cup powdered sugar seeds from 1 vanilla bean 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup crème fraîche (again, you could use full fat sour cream or full fat greek yogurt) • 2-4 tablespoons cream, milk, or half and half (you might need a bit more to get the right consistency)
Triple Berry Crème Fraîche Scones
moist, but not wet. All ovens are different, so just keep an eye on them and don’t be afraid to lift the lid on one to check. You can just eat that one before anyone notices. 15. Allow to cool completely before glazing. (Or dig in while they’re still warm like we do! You can always serve some glaze alongside.)
Vanilla Bean Crème Fraîche Glaze
While scones are baking, make the glaze by combining all glaze ingredients in a bowl or spouted measuring cup. Whisk to combine. You should have a not too thick, not too thin, pourable consistency that won’t all just slither off the scones. I describe it as the consistency of cool honey. Drizzle glaze over cooled scones and dig in!
1. Whisk the crème fraîche, cream, vanilla seeds, vanilla extract, and egg in a large, spouted measuring cup and set aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. With a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the cold butter into the flour mixture. Keep going until the mixture resembles crumbs. 3. add berries to flour mixture and toss gently to evenly disperse 4. Pour the cream mixture into the flour mixture slowly while gently stirring the dry ingredients with a fork just until it comes together. It’s ok if there are a few dryer patches of dough, but if you have a lot of dry flour, add a bit more cream about a tablespoon at a time as you keep stirring until you have a mostly moist, cohesive dough. 5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and lightly press it together until it forms a rough square. Cut dough in half and stack one half on top of the other. Press back into a rough square. Repeat this process two more times. The stacking process creates perfect, flaky layers. I do this same trick when I make biscuits. You can even plop a few extra berries in between the layers if you want. 6. A metal bench scraper is incredibly useful for the cutting and stacking, also for transferring the scones to the baking tray. If you make a lot of biscuits, bread, or scones, I urge you to get one. 7. Use your hands or a rolling pin to roll into a square about 8×8 inches and about an inch thick. 8. Cut square into 12 even square-ish pieces. Some will be a bit more rectangular, but that’s ok. 9. Place cut scones onto a parchment lined baking sheet about 1.5-2 inches apart. I was able to get all of mine onto a standard half sheet pan. They don’t spread much, but they do rise. 10. Brush tops with cream and sprinkle with coarse or granulated sugar. I actually prefer granulated because I don’t like super crunchy scones. Totally up to you. You could even use demerera if you have it. 11. Place pan in freezer for at least 30 minutes before baking. This is a trick I’ve learned from several scone-making experts, and it really makes a difference. It just helps the flour hydrate and the butter chill back down which results in the fluffiest, flakiest scones. 12. Here’s the cool thing though: You can leave that tray in the freezer all night and bake yourself some fresh scones the next day. You can freeze them, transfer to plastic bags or a freezer-safe container and have scones anytime your heart desires. Yep, pretty cool. 13. When you’re ready to bake, preheat oven to 400 degrees F. 14. Bake scones for 25-35 minutes until tops are crackled and golden brown and dough is cooked through. If baking from overnight frozen, you’ll definitely need the longer baking time. You might have to peel the top of one back to double check. The dough should look

My Pet’s Friend
Celebrates Second Anniversary By Rich and Missy Macias April 1st, 2020 marks our two-year anniversary as owners of My Pet’s Friend. It has been fun traveling around to meet so many of Fauquier County’s diverse citizens and take care of their loved ones. And while our business continues to grow, those customers we call friends also grows. As such, we would like to spend some time thanking some folks: First off, we would like to thank our dedicated team of pet sitters. Many of our sitters have other jobs but work with us out of their love for animals. While many have set schedules, we often ask them to visit furry friends on weekends, holidays, at the last minute and in inclement weather. They do so to help others who have family emergencies, clients who need that last minute visit, but most of all, to ensure our client’s pets are well-treated. Secondly, we want to thank our wonderful clients. Without our clients, of course, we would not be able to do what we love. We are very thankful to our clients for sharing their family members with us. We enjoy meeting and caring for all of our friends. Yes, we are extremely thankful for all the beautiful furry friends we see on a daily basis. The best part of our day is opening a door or gate to an anxious puppy, cat, goat or other family member who is excited to see us. And boy are they excited! Even the shy ones meet us with kisses, purrs or by rubbing up against us. They really are our family. So, thanks again for two wonderful years. We look forward to each and every day with all of you and hope we can continue to be a part of your lives for years to come! If you’re looking for a new group of friends to visit your loved ones when you can’t, please consider contacting My Pet’s Friend (www.mypets-friend.com).
