Dear Residents,
It’s Summertime!! The kids might be rejoicing that they don’t have to wake up early to catch the bus anymore, but parents (myself included!) see a calendar with three months open. Sure, there are a few family outings scattered throughout. We’ll spend some afternoons by the community pool. My son has some scout trips. My daughter’s dance will take us out of town for a week. But that still leaves a whole lot of days to fill. Need ideas? Take a look at our calendar. If you have toddlers or elementary kids, don’t miss the fountain opening at Gateway. Don’t want to leave your pups at home, check out Dog Day at LaGrange. At the end of the month, you can catch some fireworks in Lorton and the children’s parade in Haymarket. And those are only a few of the activities we’ve featured. Let us know what you’re doing this summer. Send an email to me at mweaver@ bestversionmedia.com. You might just see some familiar faces an upcoming issue!

The Fernandez Family It Takes Two … Plus Four
By Marianne Weaver | Photos by The Little Photo Shop Every year, Mark and Diane Fernandez host a Christmas party. “We like to celebrate our first meeting by hosting a house-party-style Christmas party,” said Diane. “Think ‘80s and ‘90s music blasting and a bunch of middleaged moms and dads not having to worry about embarrassing their teenage sons and daughters as they dance to Rob Base’s ‘It Takes Two’ or Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing.” The couple met in 2000. Diane had graduated from St. Mary’s College in Indiana where she played softball, and had returned to her hometown in Vienna, Va., to pursue her master’s degree in elementary education from Marymount University in Arlington. Mark, who had attended Fairmont State College, W. Va., where he was a catcher for the
baseball team, was in recruit school with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. Diane’s cooperating teacher threw the party where the couple met. Ten months later Mark proposed in Chicago near Wrigley Field, a place near Diane’s heart, as her grandfather won the World Series in 1945 with the Detroit Tigers. The couple had flown into Chicago Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001. Mark was trying to hold off until the weekend’s football match-up of Notre Dame (Di’s team) and WVU (Mark’s team). “Mark was a tad nervous about going through security with an engagement ring,” she said. “I don’t think he could take it a second longer – he proposed that evening/ Thursday with a bunch of my college friends around, which was perfect.” After she accepted, the group hit a bar across the street from Wrigley Field. Word of the engagement spread, and Mark’s “brothers” joined in the celebration.
We would like to thank Gainesville Dental Arts for sponsoring this month’s feature story.

“What followed after the proposal was a crew of unknown Chicago firefighters literally taking the shirts off their backs and buying copious amounts of beverages for us,” said Diane. “Once they found out one of their ‘brothers’ just got engaged, it was like a scene from ‘Magic Mike’ without Channing Tatum. Picture grown men taking off their respective fire house T-shirts in the middle of a bar by Wrigley to exchange them with each other. Because: Brotherhood.” The couple married the following year on July 5th at Diane’s home parish, Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, where she attended kindergarten through eighth grade. Their reception was at the Reston Town Center Hyatt. “As most weddings go, it was a blur and went by entirely too fast,” said Diane, who added that one of her favorite memories was dancing with her father. “He wouldn’t pick a song for the father/daughter dance, so I decided to surprise him with ‘Great Balls of Fire.’ My Dad loves to dance so I had to make certain he had the opportunity to share some of his signature moves. Another fun memory was listening to the West Virginia firefighter buddies who came to the wedding sing their ‘excellent’ rendition of ‘Country Roads.’” FAST FORWARD In the blink of an eye, the couple has grown into a family of six. “Our first two boys are 13 ½ months apart … because that’s a good idea,” said Diane. “Now that the toddler years are over, we actually are so happy that they are close. Maybe not so much in a few years when they are both in college.”

Drew, 15, plays football and lacrosse at Patriot High School. He’s in the Project Lead the Way Engineering Program, which has sparked his interest in becoming an engineer one day. Sam, 14, played football and basketball at Gainesville Middle School, lacrosse for Brigade and travel basketball for Audacity Wildcats. He will start high school at Patriot in the fall. Faith, 11, is in the fifth grade at Glenkirk Elementary. Next year, she will attend Gainesville Middle. “She is the perfect balance in our family – super sweet but also a lot of spice to keep these boys in check,” said her mother. “She loves to play soccer, basketball and lacrosse.” Jack, 8, also attends Glenkirk Elementary, and is interested in all things related to weather. “His dream is to be meteorologist,” said Mark. “He also loves playing soccer, basketball and lacrosse.” ON THE MOVE Diane said if the family had a motto it would be: “Keepin’ it real…. real busy.” “Sometimes Mark and I are like two ships passing in the night with the amount of sports and activities the kids are involved in – they are currently playing lacrosse and basketball but also play football, baseball and soccer,” she said. “And ironically in our ‘free’ time, sports don’t seem to stop. We love playing stick ball or whiffle ball in our cul-de-sac with the kids. We may or may not have come home to our kids trying to spray paint a baseball/kickball field in the cul-de-sac back in the day. During the cold months you’ll often hear “knee hockey” games being played in the basement.
And, if you can’t hear them you can definitely come on in and see the five million holes and marks on both the walls and ceilings. What mother doesn’t love pieces of drywall all over her basement?”
411, which recently received the Northern Virginia’s Chamber of Commerce Silver Medal of Valor for saving construction workers in a boom truck whose truck was on fire and suspended under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
They moved into Glenkirk Estates in 2004.
“The majority of our friends in our neighborhood are public servants/teachers and small business owners,” said Diane. “This environment of camaraderie makes having a husband/father who is away for 24-hour shifts/ 1/3 of the time a lot easier. With the help of grandparents, other family members and friends, raising a large family is a lot less challenging with a support system intact.”
“We built the smallest model home when we had just had our oldest and realized quickly after baby number four that we needed a little more space,” said Diane. “With the help of family, friends and some divine intervention, in 2012 we were able to move just a few houses down the street into a house that would accommodate a larger family.” Diane has taught at Glenkirk Elementary since it opened in 2005. She was a second-grade teacher for 12 years before becoming the reading specialist. Mark started volunteering as a firefighter in Stonewood, W. Va., when he was 16. Today, he is a lieutenant with Rescue Squad
She said they are all thankful for neighbors who feel like family. “Knocking on the door to come in is optional and there is truly a village mentality when it comes to parenting and raising our children,” she said. “Sometimes I feel like I’m in college again with the amount of fun we all like to have. We are so fortunate to live around so many simply put, good people.”

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT
LOCAL NON-PROFIT Supports Performing Arts By Marianne Weaver Mary Postma was living in the Regency at Dominion Valley, an “overactive adult 55+ community,” when she and some friends realized there was a need to support the arts in Prince William County.
said Postma. “Regency Arts Group morphed into Regency Friends of The Hylton Performing Center (FOHPAC). We organized ‘Friend Raisers’ and invited our neighbors to our homes for food,
The group became “official” in 2013. Postma led as chairperson, and her husband Hans served as treasurer. Nadine Bishop joined in 2014 and is the current secretary. Vice president Claire Machosky-Ullman and Penny Barrows have been around since the beginning.
“When we moved into Regency, I started an organization called Regency Arts Group, the purpose of which was to offer trips to museums, shows, festivals, operas and concerts to the residents of our community,” said Postma. “We had all worked so hard now it was time to get together and enjoy the arts.” For a few years, members of the group were out and about enjoying the arts throughout Prince William and neighboring counties. And then they heard about the Manassas campus of George Mason University’s plans to build a performing arts venue. “When we heard that The Hylton Performing Arts Center was being built, our arts group became very involved,”
“We did some fundraising by doing Jeopardy, Name That Tune, and Puzzle nights,” said Postma. “This was great fun for our community, and it brought in money for us to be able to sponsor some programing for the students of Prince William County.” wine and entertainment; all the while we were filling them in on what was coming to our neighborhood. We were ambassadors of The Hylton Center.” In addition to the friend raisers, the group participated in the Take-A-Seat program. In exchange for a tax-deductible contribution, the members were honored with an engraved copper plaque on a seat in the Orchestra Section of Merchant Hall. The FOHPAC also donated the podium they use for discussions and other events. EXPANDING THE MISSION Although the group enjoyed performances at the Hylton, they saw an opportunity to make a greater impact on the region. Together, they founded Performing Arts for Kids (PAK), which supports the arts in Prince William County and surrounding communities by engaging students in creative experiences through collaboration with the Hylton Performing Arts Center.

“We felt we needed to do something at The Hylton Center for children,” said Potsma. “We morphed into Performing Arts for Kids, or PAK as we refer to ourselves.”

In 2015, the organization incorporated as a 501c3. To raise funds, they also designed and produced a commemorative holiday ornament, a tradition that continues today. They have also received donations from Regency Women’s Club and The Heritage Hunt Women’s Organization, as well as grants from The Giving Circle of Heritage Hunt. “With these grants and donations, as well as independent donations, along with the sale of our ornaments we now sponsor special programing at The Hylton Performing Arts Center for students from Prince William County, Manassas City and Manassas Park,” she said. “We have served more than 38,000 students to experience The Hylton Center and we have given scholarships for the Hylton Boot Camp (for learning back stage management, lighting and sound). We have also given scholarships to Youth Orchestra of Prince William.” For more information about PAK, visit www.performingartsforkidspak.org or follow the organization on Facebook at PAK-Performing Arts for Kids.
EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR
Summer Hair By James Cornwell
Summer is here and that means humidity, heat and sun. This could also mean frizzy hair. Iva Bella Salon has certified Cezanne artists to help you tame your mane. Cezanne is a smoothing treatment that removes frizz and smooths hair without harmful chemicals. At Iva Bella Salon, we use this proven anti-frizz smoothing treatment. Our clients rave about the treatment and the products to assist with maintaining the smooth look. Before we discuss the products, we can explain how humidity and frizz work. Hair loves moisture and reacts to humid weather. Have you ever styled your hair, looked in the mirror and thought, this is a great hair day? Then you leave the temperaturecontrolled environment and your hair seems to ‘grow.’ This is normal because your hair is absorbing the moisture in the air and wants to be the same as the humidity in the air. Hair loves moisture. Hair wants to be the same percentage of humidity that is in the air that is why it ‘grows’ as soon as you walk outside, the hair absorbs moisture and swells.
the treatment makes the hair and how easy it is to style. The Classic Treatment transforms your frizzy, difficult, kinky, curly hair into soft, manageable, beautiful locks. It will reduce your drying and styling time by up to 50 percent. You can enjoy no wait time to wash, color, workout or pull back with clips or a ponytail! You will leave the salon looking fantastic with completely wearable hair. The Instant Treatment is an ultra-fast, spray-in smoothing treatment that brings hair to its ideal, most beautiful condition ‘in an instant,’ without damaging the hair or using dangerous chemicals. The Blonde Treatment is for the ultimate smoothing and toning in one! The perfect match! The smoothing you expect from the Cezanne Classic Treatment with blue-violet hues to reduce unwanted warm tones for the ultimate silky, shiny, dazzling blonde.
The remedy is a Cezanne keratin smoothing treatment. Cezanne is the only smoothing treatment we use at Iva Bella Salon. It is an eco-friendly service and that meshes with our culture in the salon. This treatment is good for your hair and is free of formaldehyde (which is safer for the client and the stylist), paraben, sulfate, gluten and phthalate. The first ingredient is aloe vera juice and is packed with botanical ingredients as well as vitamins for the hair. It is formulated to be anti-aging and non-toxic. Our clients love the treatment as there is no downtime waiting for the treatment to ‘set in’ and the hair can be colored, toned and shampooed directly before or after the treatment. This service will take approximately one to three hours depending on the length and thickness of the hair. Long hair will add time to the appointment and hair thickness will also impact the time. The beautiful, shiny, frizz-free hair that we deliver with this treatment means great hair days for you this summer. We have an entire experience for the Cezanne treatment, so when you leave Iva Bella Salon you not only leave with fabulous hair; you leave with products that are designed to enhance the longevity of the treatment. The Cezanne shampoo and conditioner are color safe and are designed with Sericin, a protein that continues the anti-frizz process while you care for your hair at home. On average, the Cezanne Classic treatment lasts for three to five months while the Cezanne Express treatment lasts for four to six weeks. Theatre Arts Thrives at Gainesville Middle
By Peggy Hyde and Stacey Pannebecker Gainesville Middle School for the Arts and Sciences has a thriving, dynamic Theatre Arts program. Each year, the school presents three plays for the public. First, the director and producer, Peggy Hyde and Stacey Pannebecker, choose a small select group of students to rehearse and perform a short play that is then taken to the Virginia Theatre Association state competition. They have won many gold and silver trophies and have had students nominated to the state All-Star Cast, as well as having numerous students win the Top Actor award for the state in the Middle School division. While rehearsing for that competition play, auditions are held for the fall play, which is usually a comedy of light drama. They start rehearsals in mid-September and present the play in early December. The Spring show is always a musical. They have performed such shows as Annie Jr., The Little Mermaid Jr., Aladdin Jr., Mulan Jr., and this year’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr. Their casts number generally from 35 to 55 students and an additional 30 students work on crew for each show. Students on crew are taught how to use stage lighting, sound equipment, and even application of stage makeup. Hyde and Pannebecker, along with principal Catherine PorterLucas, are very proud of the program at GVMS and invite the public to come see all the talented students at Gainesville Middle School for the Arts and Sciences.

By Chelsea Scott With the advent of interactive video games, handheld devices and tablets, playing outside could become a dying art. Try putting the electronics away for an afternoon and sending the kids outside with nothing but nature, each other and their imaginations to keep them busy. Need ideas to get them started? We suggest resurrecting these old-school yard games. You may even be inspired to join in. FREEZE TAG Played like regular tag, except you must “freeze” when tagged by whoever is “it.” Frozen players can only be unfrozen if someone else tags them. The first player to move while frozen becomes “it.” TV TAG We’d be remiss not to mention this classic. This twist on freeze tag requires that the player doing the thawing shout out a TV show as they tag the frozen player. RED ROVER “Red rover, red rover, let Sarah come over!” is the trademark phrase for this recess standard. To play, kids divide into two groups and interlock arms in a line facing each other. One side calls a person from the other side over. If they break through a link in the arm chain, they get to choose a player from the opposing team to recruit back to their side. If they can’t break through, they must join the opposing team. SIMON SAYS In addition to being fun,

this game’s benefits include developing coordination and attention to detail. “Simon” stands before a group and gives commands that begin with “Simon says.” Only commands that begin with those two words are to be followed. So, if Simon simply says, “Spin around,” anyone who follows the command is “out.” DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE! This one was popular in the classroom, the schoolyard and, of course, children’s birthday parties. Kids sit in a circle while whoever is “it” walks behind them and gently taps everyone’s head or shoulder saying, “duck, duck, duck…” If a participant is tapped and “it” yells “Goose!” the person tagged must get up and chase the “it” child before they reach “goose’s” seat and sit down. Failure to catch whoever is “it” means the “goose” is now “it.” HIDE AND SEEK Best with a group, this game requires participants to find a great hiding spot while whoever is “it” counts to 10 or 20 and then tries to find them. The first one found is “it.” MARBLES With endless variations, a game of marbles is perfect for two people or a smaller group. Draw a circle on the sidewalk and take turns trying to knock the opponent’s marbles outside the circle with one large marble. What’s your favorite yard game from childhood? Whatever it is, we encourage you to play it with your family and bask in the nostalgia.

Honoring our Heroes By Asha Sedalia Bruot The Gainesville Haymarket Rotary Club and the Town of Haymarket, Va., are joining together to host the second annual Flags for Heroes and Families weekend commemoration from Friday, June 14 through Sunday, June 16 at the Town of Haymarket Park, located at 14710 Washington Street. The community ceremony will celebrate this year’s Field of Flags on Saturday, June 15 at 9 a.m. with local dignitaries. Flag sponsorships, which ranged from $50 to $550 to honor a veteran, firefighter, police officer, teacher or anyone in public service, were used to support Semper K9, a nonprofit that provides service dogs to combat veterans. The public ceremony is free and open to the public. This year’s event will include: The National Anthem sung by locally renowned performer Jarreau Williams of Xen Live Entertainment, Haymarket Baptist Preschool children’s choir and Boy Scout troop 1882. Local dignitaries will recognize heroes as well the Haymarket mayor and town council and the Haymarket police department. The flags will be erected on Friday, June 14 and taken down June 16, with the flags lit overnight. Each flag is adorned with a tag containing the honoree’s name, branch of service, or type of service, and who is honoring them. At the end of the ceremony, those who purchased recognition for their hero can attach a placard to a flag of their choosing. The Haymarket police monitor the flags overnight and provide support during the event.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT
Brogan Mutarelli By Lucrecia G. Reyes Brogan Mutarelli is one of our newest young entrepreneurs. He is 13 years old and, like most young kids his age, he likes to play war and studio games. He also likes to sing and is part of an a cappella group at school. He is a charismatic, creative, intelligent young person with limitless potential. He currently attends a school for gifted adolescents with a focus on STEM - science, technology, engineering and math. He enjoys spending time in the school engineering shop where he brings to life many of his creations. Brogan discovered his passion for working with his hands one summer while building a tree house with his dad and grandfather, who flips houses. Ever since, he has pursued his passion for creating unique things with his hands and with his 3-D printer. He learned how to operate his 3-D printer by watching YouTube videos. He has also 3-D printed printer parts for modifications he has developed. A few months ago, Brogan decided to accompany his mother to one of her vendor events to see if he could sell some of his creations. He enjoyed the idea of selling his products so much that he decided to start his own business, Brogan Creates. After

all, entrepreneurship runs in Brogan’s family, both his twin sister and older sister have their own businesses, as well as, his mother and grandfather. Brogan has designed and built toys, houseware tools, model rockets, nightlight covers and jewelry with his 3-D printer. He also builds custom wood furniture to include his own twin bed, a night table made of wood, acrylic and metal, and an accent table. This year’s Young Entrepreneurs Business Fair attracted Brogan’s interest after listening to his twin sister describe how much fun she was having at each workshop she attended. So he decided to register and is looking forward to the upcoming fair on June 23. He hopes to not only market his business at the fair, but to also get people interested in 3-D printing and woodworking. He hopes to become a mechanical engineer when he grows up, in the meantime, he will continue to develop his skills. He is currently working on designing a pressurized backpack for Nerf Wars at school. Brogan’s products will be on display at the Young Entrepreneurs Business Fair Sunday, June 23, from noon to 4 p.m., at Club Eclipse in Gainesville, Va. There are still spaces available if you have a young entrepreneur who would like to participate in the fair. Learn more by following on Facebook or Instagram.

BACK TO BASICS:
Pesto and Tomato Salsa By Tom Kee Two items that are a staple in our kitchen and that you can use for many things are pesto and a tomato salsa.
PESTO • Basil leaves picked from 4-5 bunches
Add basil to blender with the rest of ingredients, except butter. Start pulsing and as it starts to mix, add butter and let run for a little bit more until smooth, but not as long as might heat the pesto.
• 1 cup extra virgin olive oil
Pour and scrape the pesto into a covered container and refrigerate.
• 1/4 cup toasted pine nuts
Bring to room temperature to use.
• 1/2 cup fresh grated Parmesan Reggiano
PLUM TOMATO SALSA
• 2 small cloves of garlic, grated or minced • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice • 1 tsp salt • 1/2 stick sweet butter, cut into pats, room temperature EQUIPMENT Blender or food processor Sharp chef’s knife
• 5-6 ripe plum tomatoes • 4-5 leaves fresh basil • 1 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 medium to large peeled shallot, minced • 2 whole peeled garlic cloves, halved • Salt and pepper to taste EQUIPMENT Sharp chef’s knife Cutting board

DIRECTIONS
NEIGHBORS OF LAKE MANASSAS
Tear basil into dome size pieces. Add both to bowl with olive oil, garlic and shallot and season to taste with salt and pepper. Let sit for at least an hour. Before serving, you may remove garlic or can still leave in. It won’t be strong, but just nicely flavored. Keep in refrigerator but bring to room temperature to serve. Salsa may be added to pasta, either warm or cold, just drizzle a little pesto on top. Or add to fresh grilled or sautéed fish or shrimp and, likewise, finish with a drizzle of pesto. If you get a nice loaf of Italian bread and leave it in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for several days, until it is a little dry but not stale, slice on an angle about ¾ inch thick and about 7-8 in long. Toast on the grill until slightly browned and take a whole peeled garlic clove and rub both sides. Either brush or dip in a good olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Either cover a plate with tomatoes and pesto or cut the slices into fingers and use the pesto and tomatoes as a dip. Very tasty!
BE SAFE THIS SUMMER By Chelsea Scott Oh, summer. The days are longer, filled with sunshine. We’re able to get out and about with those we love. While having fun, though, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Here are a few tips to keep you and your family safe this summer. WEAR SPF SPF is essential if you’re going to be in the sun for any amount of time. Select one that offers both UVA and UVB protection, with a sun protection factor of 30 or more. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying SPF 15 minutes before going outside and reapplying every two hours. Don’t forget your ears, neck and tops of feet! BE SMART AROUND POOLS AND LAKES Please watch your children, whether they know how to swim or not. They should never be left alone in a pool or lake. Learn how to swim and wear a life jacket when in or around the water. It’s also good to know CPR and other life-saving techniques. Rip currents occur on many surf beaches and can be powerful enough to pull even the strongest swimmer under. If you find yourself in a rip current, do NOT try to swim directly against the current and go back to shore. Instead, swim parallel to shore out of the current. Once you feel you’re out of the current, then it’s safe swim back to shore. You can also float and follow the current until it stops before swimming parallel to and then back to shore. Remember
this: flip, float and follow. Flip over onto your back so you can breathe. Float on your back and follow the current until it stops and you can swim back out of the current. TAKE PRECAUTIONS WHEN GRILLING Your grill should be at least 10 feet away from your house, shrubs or bushes. If it’s too close to the house, plastic siding could melt and wooden siding could catch fire. Shrubs and bushes—especially ones that are a bit dry from the summer heat—could also catch fire. You should also avoid leaving a grill unattended. If you need to go inside to grab the chicken that’s been marinating, ask someone to watch it for you. Flare-ups can happen at any time. WARD OFF BUGS To help prevent bug bites while outdoors, wear a hat and tall socks and use insect repellant. And before coming inside, always check yourself and children for ticks. HAVE CAR SMARTS Never leave children or pets in a car when it’s hot outside. Even with a window cracked, the temperature inside the car can reach dangerous levels in a matter of minutes. When taking those summer road trips, make sure to pack a paper map (should the GPS on your phone fail), a first aid kit and flares. Remember to wear your seatbelt, and never—EVER—drink and drive. Remember, a safe summer is a good summer! Sources consulted: www.aad.org, www.weather.gov.
