RESIDENT FEATURE

The Kowalewski Family:

You Never Know When You are Creating a Memory By Christine Craddock | Photos by The Little Photo Shop We would like to thank Novant Health for sponsoring this month’s feature story. The Kowalewskis’ historic home in the city of Manassas has a clever nickname: the Stumble Inn. The couple lovingly attributes this name to the concept that in their tight knit community, you never know when someone may just stumble in. Their first venture in Manassas was an apartment rental but they quickly fell in love with the town and purchased an 1880s-built home in April of 2016. The family consists of Mark and Melissa, along with their sons, 24-yearold Aaron and 17-year-old Kyle. Both Aaron and Kyle are soccer enthusiasts, having played since they were just 4 years old, and history gurus. Both boys have an adventurous side, and are well traveled and witty, says Mark. “At any family function, you will hear at least a few jokes - old favorites and some new.” Kyle enjoys being with people and is easy to like, always thinking of others and displaying empathy towards others. He attended the Leadership Prince William Summer Youth Academy, which is a 2 week intensive program with a mission to help students develop leadership skills, connect with other like-minded youth, and learn more about their community. Aaron is generous, always helping out family and friends. In 2019, he graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a degree in Recreation and Sports Management. His resourcefulness and knack for finding ways

to solve problems will be an asset in his career choice of event planning. Rounding out the foursome is a 7-year-old Border Collie named Larz who “thinks he is human,” says Mark, and loves being around people. But probably even more unique to his personality is his ability to sing. Both Mark and Melissa hold a degree in Business Management - Mark from George Mason University and Melissa from Old Dominion University. And they both work at home for tourism organizations, but for 2 different towns. After 25 years with the Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Mark now works for Visit Prince William, Prince William County’s Office of Tourism. Visit Norfolk is Melissa’s domain Both Mark and Melissa both remember feeling there was something more beyond friends after they met for the first time. To this day, one silly disagreement they have is who asked who out first. Melissa maintains that it was her and Mark thinks it was him. One possible reason for their success in marriage could be Mark’s response: “I guess women are always right?”

red, white, and blue outfit complete with hat. But that’s not the only holiday the Kowalewskis revel in. They also wear matching onesies on Christmas morning, and yes, Larz gets one too. Mark and Melissa believe that most people don’t even realize how many people reside in the downtown area. Their friendships made here in town are abundant - much more than when they lived in a planned community. Evenings on the porch of their home usually end up with conversations with neighbors as they walk by or the friendly toot of a car horn as someone they know drives by. If the Kowalewskis lived by any life motto, it would be this: “You never know when you are creating a memory.” Whether it’s in town or while traveling, they make many memories to look back on with family and friends. Their membership with the American Legion Post 10 provides hours of entertainment, like Wednesday Night Bar Bingo and Friday Night Seafood dinners. They are regulars at The Candy Factory’s murder mystery dinners, usually along with a group of 16 friends all dressed up in costume.

A weeklong cruise was planned to celebrate their wedding, since both Mark and Melissa desired a wedding lasting more than a few hours. A group of their closest friends and family joined them on the cruise. “It was an amazing time visiting different ports, having different adventures in each port and creating new memories,” says Mark. It is quite fitting that the Kowalewskis met while working in the hospitality industry, as their home is often the site of many hosted gatherings, whether it be just an impromptu night on the front porch or holiday and community events. Family and friends alike come to the Kowalewski home for the best seat in the house to watch the annual Manasssas parades that come down their street. The home also gives neighbors an excellent view of fireworks. On the fourth of July, the home is made colorful with flags lining the fence. Even Larz gets in on the holiday spirit with a

The family enjoys taking out their travel trailer to visit new places, most recently Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore. There were about 7 other camping families joining them. They had so much fun, they already booked the trip for next year, maybe with more families coming this time. One favorite annual trip is to the Urbanna Oyster Festival. Although it has been cancelled this year, they will still go camp there with the usual group. But back at home, living within walking distance of restaurants, bars, entertainment, grocery stores, and the train station has them loving everyday life. When asked what they enjoy about living in historic Manassas, they say “where do we begin?” Between being able to walk to everything they need, and a neighborhood full of friends, the Kowalewski family is making memories right in the middle of all that our town has to offer Dreams for memory making into the future include adventures in their travel trailer after retirement. “We want to visit many destinations in the US, visiting family and friends, with a good campfire and our dog all in tow,” says Mark and Melissa. Local Artists Make a Piano a Work of Art Submitted by the City of Manassas Generations of Manassas youth learned to play piano under the stern, but loving direction of Virginia Speiden Carper. Now both the Steinway piano that she played for most of her 96 years, and the upright piano she used to teach piano will find new life, thanks to a donation by her estate. Mrs. Carper was an unpaid Manassas Baptist Church organist for 50 years, and used her Battle Street home as a piano studio. She estimated that she taught 1,000 students to play the piano, retiring only when she turned 90 years old. The upright piano she used has been painted and decorated thanks to a community art project painted by John Hartt and Laura Lavarnway. The piano has been cleaned and tuned. It will become a street piano at the Harris Pavilion

Heat Pump/Gas Furnace Inspection ONLY (expires 11/26/2020)

where community members are invited to stop by and play. The Steinway piano was moved to the Osbourn High School auditorium, Mrs. Carper’s alma mater, where it will be featured in school performances. Becky Verner, Artistic Director of the Manassas Chorale and Director of Music at Manassas Baptist Church, was a student of Mrs. Carper who remembers her lessons fondly. “There were times that she would tap on your shoulder to make you feel the beat and times when you could tell she was disappointed if you hadn’t practiced that much that week.” Verner says Carper was also known for her piano duets and quartets and that she founded the Manassas Community Concert Association, which gave local residents a taste of great music as renowned artists came to Manassas to perform during its

Mrs. Carper was a familiar presence in the community, helping to establish the Manassas Museum, and presenting an annual award to a deserving firefighter from the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company in memory of her father Albert Speiden, who served as the first president of the company and was the famed architect who counted the Old Town Hall and Candy Factory among his many designs. Mrs. Carper died in 2005. THE ARTISTS - Artist John Hartt was in attendance when the pianos were being moved from the Speiden house and heard mention of painting the piano and making it a community piano. Hartt volunteered the Manassas Art Guild to take on this project. Along with Hartt, artists Laura Lavarnway, Betty Sperty, Michele Frantz, Marti Whitehead, and Maureen Guillot began meeting and sketching out the design. “It’s been a super fun project,” says Hartt. The candy/sweets theme includes jellybeans, fruit, and marshmallow, along with an assortment of goodies coated in sugar. Be sure to stop by the Harris Pavilion and see for yourself. Or take a seat and play some tunes!

VIRGINIA WAR MEMORIAL ANNOUNCES VETERANS DAY ESSAY CONTEST By Virginia War Memorial Foundation

The Virginia War Memorial is now accepting entries for the 2020 Veterans Day Essay Contest. The contest is open to all middle and high school students in Virginia, and a winner will be selected from each age group (grades 6-8 and 9-12). Winners and their teachers will receive a prize, and winning students will be asked to read their submissions aloud as part of the Commonwealth’s Veterans Day Ceremony Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020. As we reach the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Virginia War Memorial encourages students to reflect on the men and women who have served their country and find inspiration in their service. Subjects of student essays may be those who survived the war, or those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Students should consider the lessons they can learn from their subject, and what we can all take from their example. While selecting subjects, students should consider family members, members of their communities, or others whose stories resonate personally. Subjects may have served in any branch of the military. Essays should focus on the subject’s time in service, though students may also address his or her time before and after the war if relevant. Responses should be developed through research, using interviews and/or primary sources when possible. Students are free to utilize newspaper articles, first person accounts, military records, letters, or more to tell us about the subject, and why he or she is inspirational. Please visit vawarmemorial.org/learn/contests-scholarships/essay/ for the full prompt and for submission information. The deadline to submit is SUNDAY, OCT. 11 at 11:59 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Morgan Guyer at morgan.guyer@dvs.virginia.gov. This contest is not sponsored by or endorsed by Best Version Media in any way.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

Medical Missionaries: Volunteers Provide Medical Care to the Poorest of the Poor By Christine Madaio DiStasio, volunteer Medical Missionaries is a Manassas-based volunteer group consisting of more than 200 doctors, nurses, dentists, and others working to improve the lives and health of the poor in the U.S. and worldwide by providing medical care and supplies, clothing, and food to the areas it serves.

Dr Lawrence and staff at St. Joseph Clinic showing some of the medicines that we acquired on their behalf.

Medical Missionaries supports various programs at the Clinic. One of them is a Midwives program. We have several stories at our website on midwives (motwons): https://www.medicalmissionaries.org/newsstories/program-update-maternity-and-infant-care-program/

For over 25 years, Medical Missionaries has been serving the poorest of the poor, both in the USA and around the world. It began with the vision of its founder, Dr. Gilbert Irwin, a longestablished internist from Manassas, who had always looked for opportunities to help the less fortunate. Locally, Medical Missionaries’ volunteers collect medicines, medical supplies and equipment, food, and clothing that is given to those in need in Northern Virginia and Appalachia. Dr. Irwin has found that the need for such support has greatly increased during the time of the pandemic; hospitals and other agencies have reached out to Medical Missionaries Nurse taking temperature of patient to support and supplement outside St. Joseph Clinic before their work with patients and admitting patient into Clinic. clients. The work of the overseas projects began in 1997 when Dr. Irwin was asked to travel to the Dominican Republic and Haiti to assess their medical needs. Observing the lack of medical care, he recruited doctors and nurses, mostly his Manassas

colleagues, to volunteer to travel with him on medical teams. Realizing the need for a permanent medical facility, they worked over the next years to build St. Joseph Clinic, which opened in 2007. It is still the only medical facility serving about 125,000 people in Thomassique, Haiti, and its surrounding villages. In addition to providing basic medical care, its programs work to improve maternal and infant care, overcome childhood malnutrition, provide vaccinations to prevent disease, teach dental hygiene, and fill many other needs. Medical Missionaries steadily responds to requests for aid overseas, particularly to send medical supplies and equipment to help build and support infrastructure in very poor areas, particularly Africa. Volunteers at the office in Manassas do the heavy work of organizing supplies and loading the sea containers that contain a “hospital in a box” when packed up to capacity. To date, about 200 sea containers have been sent worldwide.

Container sent to Guinea Bissau

“It takes a village” truly to do the work that Medical Missionaries does. Every donation - financial or material - makes a difference, with 99 cents of every dollar donated going directly to helping the poor throughout the world. This totally volunteer organization has less than 0.5% overhead. Donors and volunteers are the backbone of the work that is done by this organization and every donation goes a long way to support the domestic and international programs of Medical Missionaries.

For information about the work of Medical Missionaries, please contact us at 9590 Surveyor Court, Manassas, 703-335-1800, email info@ medicalmissionaries.org, visit our website at www.medicalmissionaries. org or find us on Facebook.

Find Your Inner Fire and Make it Roar! By Gina Devine Remember a time when you could go to church, dinner, the grocery store, or the gym without wearing a mask? It was not that long ago, but since March, the world has had to slow down. At first it was a shock and we experienced fear, anger, and frustration. Then many of us found peace in the fact that we had to slow down. We got to reconnect with our family. Our priorities shifted and we juggled work to take care of our families, teach our children, explore Mother Nature, and more. Change can be scary, but it can also be a sign of amazing growth and strength and I truly believe we all have that in us. During this time, it can be hard to stay positive and more so, healthy and fit! Whether it is during a pandemic, a move, a job loss, illness or a million other things, please remember our mind is a powerful tool and that voice inside is the voice that you hear the most. You can train it, like any other muscle in your body, and like all training, you need to stay consistent to see results. Tell yourself every day how blessed you are, how happy you are, how much you love yourself. The way you talk to yourself will become what you believe and when you believe it, so will others. Your tribe should lift you up! Start every day filling in these blanks, I am___________, and today will be awesome because ___________. Setting a positive tone for the day will increase your chances of having a positive day! NUTRITION!!! Have you heard abs are built in the kitchen or

you are what you eat? The human body is in a constant state of regeneration and the food we fuel our bodies with aids (good or bad) in that regeneration process. Eating lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains give our body the fuel it needs to run efficiently. Having a nutrition coach can help you understand what you need to properly fuel your body to hit your goals, but at a minimum, eat clean and avoid processed foods! I did not forget about your workouts! Don’t worry, you don’t have to do anything crazy. Start simple and try to hit 10K steps per day! Wake up and go for a walk before you even start your busy day. Then take a walk around lunch time and another after dinner. Moving outside helps to stimulate your brain and make your body work with various elements you won’t get from walking on a treadmill. Have you ever tried yoga? The benefits from yoga are endless. Increased flexibility, increased muscle strength and tone, improved respiration, energy and vitality and maintaining a balanced metabolism to name a few. There are so many styles of workouts from strength training to Tabata to HIIT and more. Having a coach that knows your goals, resources, and limitations allows them to build a custom program just for you. The simplicity of consistency is what makes this all hard, but I assure you it is simple. Think positive, eat clean, and move every day. There are so many coaches out there, so interview and find one; virtual coaches are out there too. Find your inner fire and make it ROAR! My name is Gina Devine and I am a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach here in northern VA! I coach my clients on mindset, nutrition and fitness as it is my passion to help people live their best life! IG - @iamsimply.devine | FB – www.facebook.com/IAmSimplyFit.Devine
