Agents & Brokers Make Everything Look So Easy That Some People Actually Believe They Can Do It Themselves. REASONS TO USE AN AGENT: 1. Online presence is much more noticeable with an agent, meaning more opportunities of potential buyers + multiple offers = more $$$. 2. Negotiating for your personal home is emotional & agents are professional negotiators. 3. You are busy already, selling a home is a full time skill and the market is constantly changing. 4. Dear Residents, My name is Mary Rook. Allow me to introduce myself as the new Writer and Content Coordinator for Neighbors of Historic Manassas Magazine. When this opportunity opened up, as a writer and Manassas native, I couldn’t pass it up. Meeting people is my jam, and writing about them even more so. By the way, when you’re finished reading this, check out my first family article featuring the Pinkleys—a vibrant homeschool family from Blooms Crossing. Though I grew up in Manassas, I graduated with a bachelor’s from Utah State University where I studied Creative Writing, journalism and poetry. I’m a YA Sci-fi/Fantasy novelist, poet, wife to a stuntman and co-owner of three martial arts schools in the area, and mom of five. Novel writing can be a lonely profession, motherhood even more so. Throw in a pandemic and I have been itching for human interaction. One of the reasons I’ve returned to this community to raise my children is because I know how special it is, how much the people here care. I’m overjoyed to take the reins on interviewing the families of our beautiful community. If you are reading this and know a family who could be on the cover, please email me at maryrook@bestversionmedia.com I look forward to getting to know this community on an even deeper level. Speaking of families, the super cool family on the cover is the Pinkleys! Read about their adventures together, then check out this month’s charity article highlighting Robert Harris--Special Olympics Virginia athlete extraordinaire. Meander to our events page for community events. This year, it’s the 10th annual Bands, Brews, and Barbeque Festival in Old Town coming September 4th. Be sure to get your tickets before they run out. With the sincerest of sincerely’s,

RESIDENT FEATURE

The Pinkleys:

We would like to thank UVA Health System for sponsoring this month’s feature story.

The Most Together-All-the-Time Family You’ll Ever Meet By Mary Rook | Photos by The Little Photo Shop - If you were

ever to run into any of the seven Pinkleys in Manassas, chances are good another one is close by. Between family adventures hiking, video and board games, parenttaught classes on how to change oil and car batteries and homeschooling, the Pinkleys are a tight-knit clan. “We’re probably one of the most together-all-the-time families you have ever met,” Crystal says. Ryan and Crystal Pinkley met online, “before it was cool,” Ryan says. She put her location as the next big town over but when Ryan saw her profile, it showed she was living in the same town as him. 20 years later, they still have no idea how that happened. When able to spend time together, Crystal and Ryan root for Clemson, enjoy UFC fights and cheering for their children during sporting events. “I am

definitely the idea fairy in our family,” Crystal says. “He is amazing at making many of my ideas work…[or] letting me know when it’s too much.” Ryan joined the Army Reserves in 1996. He started out as a mechanic for the Army in 2000 as a civilian employee. In 2006, he made the decision to change careers and decided the IT field was where he wanted to be (or rather—inside and warm). He started in the field after graduating with his BS in 2010, then received his MS in information systems in 2015. In 2019, he retired from the Army Reserves and is currently in the cybersecurity field. Crystal went to Clemson University and earned a BS in psycology. She was commissioned into the Air Force on active duty in 2011, then worked as a behavioral scientist until she became a stay-at-home mom in 2015.

Ryan and Crystal work especially hard to nourish their children’s emotional intelligence while valuing their personalities. They believe children aren’t made to fit into premade boxes of what they expect them to be. “You can either ride your parenting days trying to shove your kids in those boxes…or you, as parents, can decide to adapt to your children.” And the Pinkleys do adapt. When they realized no one liked Thanksgiving turkey, they decided to host “Planksgiving,” a pirate party where everyone dresses as pirates and eats ribs. During the pandemic, the Pinkleys had to adapt in a very big way. Crystal was pregnant with baby Seraphine. With a history of precipitous labors (labors that last less than three hours from contractions to birth), Crystal had had a traumatic labor experience with brand new staff during her third labor. So, she chose to have home births through a tailored experience with a midwife for her fourth (Levi), and her fifth (Seraphine) pregnancies. She was 37 weeks along when the entire country shut down. “By 38 weeks, hospitals around the country weren’t allowing birth partners into the hospitals. I was terrified,” Crystal says. They sequestered themselves at home for the weeks leading up to Seraphine’s birth. Only Ryan was allowed to leave for errands. During this difficult time of being more together-all-the-time than ever, Crystal and Ryan noticed something about their family they thought they knew, but

didn’t truly understand. “Ryan and I both realized how blessed we were to have raised amazing kids,” Crystal says. They admit they bickered and snapped every once in a while like any family would, but they discovered how strong they were as a unit. They liked each other as people, which made coping with loneliness and missing out on other pregnancy joys and community aid easier. When it was time for baby Seraphine to be born, everything went smoothly. “Seraphine decided to take her

time with a nice two-and-a-half hour, uneventful labor,” Crystal says. And in the room was her entire family filled with love, joy, and welcoming. Because they had so much time together, each one of the family has bonded with Seraphine in their own way—she’s loved beyond measure, which is easy to see in her adorable and easy baby grin. Being together so much makes taking turns an important part about how the Pinkleys function. The family spends time doing what everyone likes to do. Many of the children enjoy swimming, so Crystal and Ryan volunteer on the board of their local swim team all summer. When the family goes mountain biking or hiking in the Shenandoah National Park where they pretend to be contestants of “World’s Toughest Race,” Ryan whips out his camera and snaps shots of the family to nourish his love of photography. When Crystal goes running to have her own space, her oldest goes with her. He has to slow down for her, she says, but they still run together. The five Pinkley children are Dakotah (16) who enjoys track, cross country, swim team, mountain biking, Call of Duty, paintball, playing guitar, and has a passion for cooking. Alexandria (11) enjoys rock climbing, swim team, mountain biking, paintball, piano, robotics, and is a Pokémon enthusiast. Makinsley (8) enjoys mountain biking, swim team, rock climbing, running and LOL dolls. Levi (6) enjoys mountain biking, swimming and legos. Seraphine (1) enjoys spending time with her mommy and a good smoked brisket. The Pinkleys sadly just lost their beloved cat, Binx, at 19 years old, but they also have a dog named Luna. She is nine and loves to go hiking and camping with the family. When free time is over and it’s time for school, Crystal leads the charge at home, but they don’t have to look far for hands-on opportunities. “The homeschooling community in this area is amazing,” says Crystal. Not only are the people in it a solid support, but the options for adventures are plentiful enough that it’s become harder and harder for the family to choose every year. The Pinkleys have no family nearby, so having that support

for homeschooling is important, and living in a solid community is paramount. The family moved to Blooms Crossing in 2016 to be closer to the VRE for Ryan’s job. “Blooms Park is absolutely amazing. Most of our neighbors are wonderful and there are plenty of kids on bikes to ride around the neighborhood with our kids,” Crystal says. Blooms Park officially opened in 2019 and has trails for avid lovers of hiking and mountain biking. The family wants more people to know it exists so the land won’t be rezoned and developed. While it stands, there are plenty of things to do right in their own community filled with good people. “Be kind to your neighbors,” Crystal says. “You never know what personal battles they are facing. Sometimes a conversation can make a person’s day. Being kind costs you nothing.” Ryan and Crystal try to take that same attitude of kindness and grace at home with their children. In a house with seven people, things can get messy—emotionally and literally. Their motto is: “Embrace the chaos. No one will remember the mess, but they will remember the memories created.” NHM

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

Manassas Man On His Way to the Special Olympic USA Games

By Mary Rook | Photos by Sean Wallach - Every year, the Special

Olympics Virginia torch is run from the Garfield Police Station all the way down Route One until it’s handed off to Military Police at the Quantico Military Base. Only one man runs that length, holding the torch high. That man is Manassas resident Robert Harris, a 50-year-old athlete on the autism spectrum. “Robert is pure muscle. I don’t think there’s an ounce of fat on his body,” says Ellen Head, the senior director of development of Special Olympics Virginia. He’s run the torch for years, always with the unwavering support of the Prince William County Police Department, including the Sheriff’s Department, and his friends and family. This year, they celebrated together as Robert found out he qualified in powerlifting for the 2022 Special Olympic USA Games. How does he feel about it? “I love it,” Robert says. Robert says his fitness career began when his mom wanted to keep him out of trouble. She put him in Special Olym-

pics Virginia programs. “It’s an outlet for his interest in physical fitness for a person with an intellectual disability,” Ellen says. Robert’s mom has since passed, and Robert now lives with his aunt who is proud, as is his community of supporters. Ellen Head and PWC Police befriended Robert through regional competitions where he often medals, and community events like Special Olympics Virginia barbeques with the Prince William County Police Department. Ellen says the PWC Police are extremely involved in the Special Olympics Virginia community. “They’re a model for the area,” she says. And Robert agrees. When asked if there was a particular officer to thank, Robert said, “All of them. When I do the torch run, they help me.” The torch they run is a call to awareness and funding. Special Olympics Virginia allocates donations to things like public schools and healthcare. Many athletes who attend

the USA Games don't have good health insurance, Ellen says. When they arrive, they'll receive free healthcare checkups for medical aid they desperately need. A few years back, Robert was given new teeth. To learn more about how you can support, visit www. specialolympicsva.org or follow them on Facebook for updates. Police, Special Olympics Virginia and the community are all rooting for him. Though Robert is grateful, there’s one woman who Robert can’t forget. “I dedicate this competition to my aunt,” Robert says. “She does a lot for me.”

MAYOR’S CORNER new fiscal year here in the city. Bright-eyed children are ready to begin learning new things from teachers who are hopefully restored and renewed from some summer downtime. August also brings the dog days of summer, which means summer heat. If you find that you do not have enough cool air during the day, our libraries are cooling shelters for those in need. Stonewall Park Pool is also a great place to cool off this summer or take a day in the shade under a tree in one of our city parks. There’s even a park for our four-legged friends, Lucky’s Dog Park, located near the Boys & Girls Club at 9501 Dean Park Lane.

August brings the dog days of summer, but more than that, August brings a sense of beginning. It is almost the beginning of a new school year and the beginning of a

With school beginning again, I’d like to take a moment to ask all of you to please watch out for our little ones along the sidewalks and at their bus stops. Stop when the bus arm comes out. Nothing is so important that it cannot wait for a child to get on or off a bus.

Thank you for living and thriving in Manassas. Until next month. . .

Summer Writing Contest By Zachary Tamer

Summer is in full swing and, as the days grow hotter, we are all looking for ways to keep ourselves cool. Beach vacations, pool parties, water balloon fights, and running through sprinklers and fire hydrants can all feel refreshing. And while I love all of these activities, there are two that don't always hit everyone's list for staying cool under the blistering sun. I'm talking about my two favorites: summer reading and summer writing.

So, all of my avid readers, aspiring writers, and creative souls here is your mission if you choose to accept. For this contest I will be accepting short story and poetry submissions from children 9 to 11 years old. There will be one winner from each category.

I may have been in the minority, but as a kid I loved getting our summer reading list at the end of the school year. I relished perusing the bookshelves, and could barely wait to get my books home, knowing that behind the titles on those spines were lives and adventures I could lead vicariously through their characters. I am forever thankful for the library system, which, with a simple library card, sent me to an island with Robinson Crusoe, into the icy air of the Yukon Territory with White Fang, and running the streets with Maniac Magee, all while sitting in the shade of a tree, or beach umbrella. However, reading didn't always satiate my imaginative appetite, and I’d find myself doing things like trying to build a raft like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn with one of my friends to take out on the river. In retrospect, had our fathers not caught us, we likely would have been dragged out of the Occoquan by the Coast Guard. Instead, I should have focused that imaginative energy on writing my own stories, a much safer enterprise but no less exciting. Writing prompts are great practice for aspiring writers, and the perfect way to let your imagination run wild! When I’ve hit a wall, or I am having trouble getting inspired to write, I find a good writing prompt, and it always gets the creativity flowing. The summer writing prompt I have provided is not only a good way to stay cool this summer, but it could also be your first opportunity to get published! The winners of this contest will be published in the Neighbors of Historic Manassas magazine!

BUSINESS TAXES PERSONAL TAXES COMPLEX TAXES

Short stories can be any genre but should be no longer than 1,500 words single spaced. Poems should be no longer than 40 lines, and can be written in any style. You may submit one from each category, but you must use all five writing prompts in your story or poem to win. All contest submissions will come to me at ztamer13@gmail.com with the subject line “Summer Writing Contest” by September 10th. The winner will be announced on my website www.zacharytamer. com and will be published soon after. Happy scribbling! Prompts: 1. A Train Station 2. A Magician 3. A Shadow 4. Smoke 5. Flying

Zach is the author of Fleeting Moments, a poetry book co-authored with his father, and four children's books: Italian Medicine, The Story of the Snugglefink, The Return of Foggitytree, and The City of Paws2Care. All of his books are connected with a charity that reflects the messages in his stories. When not reading or writing Zach can be found hiking in the woods, where he is regularly mistaken for a sasquatch. www.zacharytamer.com
