A letter from the
E i o -in-C ief ften, we forget to be thankful. We grow frustrated if the line at Starbucks is too long. We reach into our fully stocked cabinets a few times a day without thinking twice. We splurge on shoes that we may only wear a couple of times. We neglect to call Mom or Dad for weeks at a time because we’re oh-so-busy. It’s not until we have a health scare or watch a frightening story on the evening news or witness a loved one suffer that we remember to be thankful. To be thankful for every aspect of our lives.
a week or even once a month, make a plan and stick to it! I “collect” my thanks throughout the week and then every Saturday night, as I’m falling asleep, I run through the entire list. I feel full with thanks when I wake up on Sunday; the perfect way to start a week. We can be thankful for just about everything and anything: the roofs over our heads, the food in our bellies, the friends and family on the other side of the phone, the neighbor who holds a door open, the coworker who stays late to help you finish a project, the pet who snuggles next to us all night long... And don’t forget to actually say, “Thank you.”
I think it’s okay. We should live our lives. But remembering to take a step back every now and then is a good exercise. Don’t wait for something Let your thanks swell. Let your thanks give you external to bring everything into focus. I think it’s strength through the frustrations. Let your thanks a good idea to get in the habit of scheduling time fuel you as you give to others. to be thankful. Whether it’s once a day or once

Where did you grow up and where have you lived? I was born and raised in Dallas, Tx. My family is originally from Canada, so we usually spend the Summer there on Lake Huron to get out of the Texas heat! I also spent time in Paris two summers ago taking floral design class at the Catherine Muller School and that is where I decided to start my blog. Tell us about your childhood. I had a wonderful childhood with a lot of support from my family. Growing up, business was something we talked about at the dinner table, and our parents always included us in those conversations. Education and creativity were always encouraged with my three siblings and I. At 5, my family took a year off and traveled the world together. We went everywhere from Italy to Bali and at such a young age, it really opened my eyes to other cultures and ideas. How did those places influence your style? I love how Parisian women dress. Not just the clothes they wear, but how they carry themselves with such effortless confidence. I take a lot of inspiration from the women on the streets of Paris. Who is your style icon and why? Many of my style icons are from the past. I love looking at old images of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. My style is very classic but I like to update it with some edginess. As for today, I love Elin Kling, Rachel Zoe, and Lauren Santo Domingo. They really own their style and aren’t afraid to take risks. How is the fashion in your area different from everywhere else? What’s the fashion scene like? Dallas has a wonderful fashion scene that has especially grown over the last couple of years. We have amazing shopping and what I love about Dallas women is they love to get done up!

What’s your must have handbag and shoe? I love the YSL tribute sandals, they are really comfortable and provide extra height- I’ve talked many friends into investing in a pair! I love my Celine bag because it holds everything from my computer to a change of flats. Favorite food and why? Do you cook or are you a dine out kind of person? The best part about food is that it brings people together. Whether it is a holiday with family or cooking with friends, food is often the center of getting together.
I try to cook, but it’s not my strong suit. It definitely isn’t something I am a natural at, but I’ve been working on cooking a few healthy staples. I’m a vegetarian so I love to make quinoa, colorful salads, and in the fall spaghetti squash. I do love to dine out though, Dallas has some amazing restaurants. Being from Texas, I love my Tex Mex! Nothing beats a wonderful meal and a glass of wine after a long day. Where did you go to school and what did you study? How did that help you with what you’re doing now? I went to SMU and studied Advertising, Journalism, and Fashion Media. Going to SMU was such a blessing because I met so many wonderful people, had amazing teachers who I keep in touch with, and had great internships with PaperCity and Chanel. It was nice to go ahead and make those connections in the city I would be living in post graduation. The Fashion Media department at SMU is so wonderful. I was able to take classes on blogging and fashion journalism while networking with highly respected people in the industry. Tell us about your blog. I started my blog around two and a half years ago as a creative way to share some of the fun experiences I was getting to be a part of. NO.29

I also had a lot of people coming up to me at events and school saying, where did you get that? It was a way I could self publish and share my passions with friends and never did I think it would grow into a career! I draw inspirations from travel and I always love to get outfit ideas on Pinterest! What other ventures are you involved in? I’ve kind of created a job where I get to do a little bit of everything that I love. Weather it’s working with brands on Styling, hosting events, or sharing fashion tips on TV, it is all a dream come true and I love every minute of it. That saying, “do what you love and you will never work a day in your life” holds so true! It is so important to work on things you love! How do you juggle a blog, working…etc? I have a lot of days where I’m sitting up in my bed past 12pm working on the blog. With social media and cell phones, you constantly have to be checking in, but that is something I love about it. Since I am my own boss, I try to keep a schedule on when to work on certain things. I also find it really important to schedule time for friends and family because working staring at a computer can get a bit lonely at times.

NO.35
Tell us about your travels to Paris and how you drew a lot of inspiration from there. I really love traveling and am always inspired by the way women dress there. I also love photography so it was wonderful to take pictures of the beautiful architecture. What makes you different from all the other style bloggers on the web? I think what makes me different from other style bloggers is I treat mine like a real photographic journal. It’s really about beautiful photography and what’s going on in my life and I have found that people relate to that well! What’s your best advice to young entrepreneurs like yourself? The best advice I can give is that it is so important to take advantage of internships! It will not only help you decide what you want to do, but also helps with networking and meeting people in your industry! Anyone can be an entrepreneur, you just have to find what you are passionate about and go from there.
On to the holidays.. What’s your favorite childhood memory from the holidays? My sisters and I always put out cookies for Santa. It’s something we still do, and pretend we are just doing it for my little nephew! We still give presents signed from Santa! What’s one holiday tradition you love? Every year we go on a carriage ride around Highland Park Village to look at lights. We start with dinner at Mi Cocina, then grab a Starbucks, and bundle up! I love watching holiday movies. My favorite holiday movie is by far Elf. My dog, Buddy, was named after Will Ferrell’s character in the movie! What are your plans this year for the holidays? I just love this time of year. Every year my family and I get together at my parents housethe girls spend the whole day wearing matching Christmas pajamas and cook while the boys watch football. Favorite holiday fashion trend? My favorite holiday outfit is a big cozy sweater paired with leggings and boots. A sequin dress is always fun for a Holiday party!

Tammy Tibbetts. Giving
Girls a Chance to Be the First
A
By Evann Clingan | @evannclingan
lmost every time I meet a new group of people here in New York City, someone happens upon the fact that I volunteer for She’s the First and work with Tammy Tibbetts. To put it simply, this woman is well known in the best of ways. Once the connection is made, that person will go on to say how wonderful Tammy is and how successful she has become since founding her non-profit, which advocates for girls’ education in the developing world. At a recent NO.58

gathering, a fellow She’s the First volunteer put it so well. “Tammy has achieved success, simply by being kind.” It could not be more true She makes it a point to share her achievements with her team of volunteers: “I know it’s a turn of phrase, but I never think of She’s the First as my own. It’s such a community effort, and while it started as a piece of my heart, now I am a very small piece of it.”
“Tammy has achieved success, simply by being kind.” While Tammy had a middle-class upbringing with little global awareness, things changed when she attended The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). As a journalism major, Tammy took an active role on TCNJ’s newspaper. She explains, “I thrived on investigative reporting for a while, but then it burned me out. That’s when I started to fall in love with feature writing and interviewing subjects who wanted to share stories of overcoming challenges, their passion projects, and their admirable accomplishments.” At the time, she had no idea that similar feature stories would be written about her a few years later.
York City and became a web and social media editor for Seventeen. She credits many lessons she learned at Hearst Magazines about marketing, editorial, and social media for later helping her lay the foundation for She’s the First. “In fact,” she adds, “the concept of She’s the First as a directory of schools where you could sponsor girls was directly inspired by the model I built with DonateMyDress.org, which was a directory of prom dress drive organizations where you could donate dresses to girls in financial need. I knew there had to be a way to transfer the wildly successful strategies for running profitable prom websites and video series into launching a campaign that would bring in just as much money, if not more, to send girls to school.” Tammy’s passion for girls’ education was actually sparked during her senior year at TCNJ, when she received a reporting assignment on the life of an alumna who was a refugee of the Liberian Civil War. After completing the piece, she had the urge to do something to help. From 2007-2009, she volunteered as the Director of Operations for that alumna’s foundation, which sponsored children and was building a school in Liberia. In 2007, Tammy had the opportunity to travel there and attend a Christmas party to distribute backpacks and serve a warm meal to 300
After graduating, Tammy moved to New NO.60

orphans. She said, “The former camp counselor in me was amazed there wasn’t one fight among the kids. Their gratitude for the basics in life was waiting to be kindled into a fire for learning.” The trip left Tammy wanting to help educate those children. She was profoundly impacted by the reality that 40 million girls around the world were not receiving at education. As she served as Director of Operations,
Tammy posted education-related photos and news articles online and quickly realized that her friends wanted to take action, as well. However, they could not afford tickets to the fancy galas that foundations hosted to support girls’ education. She explains, “I also wanted to expand my reach to girls in multiple countries and to partner with organizations that were making strong community-based decisions, but needed help getting U.S. youth involved.”
NO.64
To make that happen, Tammy and some “visionary friends,” most notably She’s the First’s current Director of International Operations Christen Brandt, launched the non-profit as “a YouTube video that would provide a social media call to action for a global crisis demanding our attention--the lack of universal education.” Tammy explains, “Our message was clear: Gather your friends; contribute small donations individually, and collectively, you will sponsor a girl’s education and change her life trajectory. I saw no reason why donations couldn’t be traced dollarfor-dollar and believed in building a sustainable yet 100% direct-togirls-sponsorship model. My vision is a world where youth around the world define their aspirations based on brave ‘firsts’ and achieve them with peer-to-peer support.” Social media proved to be a powerful tool to inspire social change. Some of She’s the First’s most dedicated volunteers initially found the cause through Twitter or Facebook, and Tammy formed a relationship with them by following up in a more personal way. She’s the First also uses social media for its grassroots
Checkout She’s the First on YouTube! campaigns, such as the Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off. Tweeting and posting lets others know how they can get involved and reminds them that they are making an impact. Seeing photos of and updates about the sponsored girls helps volunteers see the lives they are changing. The passion that was initially shared online eventually spread offline, and She’s the First started to evolve into something larger than Tammy initially imagined. Today, She’s the First has 39 high school and college chapters across the country, which she says “proves we can achieve a monumental global impact while strengthening local leaders and communities.” NO.65

NO.68
While some say that Millennials are the entitled “Me Generation,” Tammy has a very different perspective. “We are building a generation of globally aware, socially responsible leaders who are taking action, online and offline, to pursue purpose-driven lives, while paying it forward.” In 2012, Tammy was named to The League of Extraordinary Women by Fast Company and called one of The 5 Most Powerful Women Changing the World for Girls by Forbes. Her reaction to those honors was simple excitement that the press would spread the word about She’s the First.
Tammy is working hard to make her vision for the future of girls’ education a reality. She is striving to tap into social networks of young people across the world to encourage collaboration in solving global issues, such as the education crisis. “You never know, in 2016 I could be at the White House, celebrating the inauguration of the first female President of the United States, with She’s the First students by my side. I could be at the graduation ceremony of our scholars in Uganda, Guatemala, or Kenya...the possibilities are beyond my wildest imagination.”
With the relentless effort that it takes to coordinate sponsorships for girls’ education around the world, Tammy admits that true life balance is difficult for her right now. Although about 20% of her time is spent on morning runs, reading The New York Times in coffee shops, and enjoying dinner dates with friends, she gladly spends 80% of her time focusing on the girls she calls her heroes. She insists, “I have the most fulfilling and creative job in the world, and such a supportive community around me--nothing “There are higher profile donors and partners I do is as scary or valiant as what the girls who will take my calls and answer my emails we sponsor have overcome to get into the classroom. They are our heroes.” because of those incredible endorsements,” she explains. “Media coverage from such esteemed publications also raises the bar. It motivates me to step up my game to be worthy of placement alongside my greatest role models.”

ike thousands of other youngsters across the country, you may have visited Washington D.C. on your 8th Grade Field Trip. I did, and I remember that trip well. But now, having lived in D.C. for more than four wonderful years, and having come to call it home, I know this city is so much more than history lessons and monuments. It is diverse, having something to offer to everyone, from preppies to hipsters. The anniversary of the day I moved to D.C. is fast approaching, and I want to take this chance to share with you some of my personal recommendations.
Let’s explore our nation’s capital. and check out some of my. favorite spots together! >>>. NO.71

Eastern Market
E
stablished in 1873, Eastern Market is the longest-runing fresh food market in D.C. Its history is rooted deep within the Capitol Hill community. Locals and visitors alike enjoy this indoor-and-outdoor market, rain or shine! The South Hall Market is an indoor space where local vendors and farmers sell everything from cuts of meat and bouquets of flowers, to fresh veggies and homemade sweet tea. Outside, at the Weekend Farmer’s line, you’ll find an array of produce and food items from nearby farms. At the Weekend Outdoor Market, you can shop for artwork, antiques, clothing, jewelry and furniture. No matter when you visit, you will not leave unsatisfied. However, I recommend coming on a weekend so you can listen to live music and snag free food samples.
The Kennedy Center \ @kencen .
M
ost visitors have heard of the world-renowned Kennedy Center, which hosts a variety of famous musicals, ballets, concerts and plays throughout the year. The building, a large, beautiful white structure that lights up the night sky, overlooks the Potomac River, and is well worth a visit on its own. If you don’t want to spend a fortune on tickets to a famous play or orchestral performance, take advantage of the free options. Free? Yes! Every day, the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center presents a musical or dramatic performance which is free to the public.

eorgetown boasts being D.C.’s oldest neighborhood. In fact, founded in 1751, it is nearly 40 years older than the district itself. The neighborhood is home to The Old Stone House, D.C.’s oldest standing building, as well as The Tombs, the bar that inspired St. Elmo’s Fire, and Blues Alley, the nation’s oldest jazz supper club. W
ithout being too biased (I call this ‘hood home), I must say that Georgetown is absolutely my favorite place to walk around in the city. Both M Street and Wisconsin Avenue are well known for their excellent shopping, restaurants and bars, more than enough to fill an entire day. I suggest that you walk down to the Georgetown Waterfront and watch kayakers on the Potomac, or rent your own from Jack’s Boathouse. Restaurants line the water, and an ice skating rink larger than the one at Rockefeller is set to open this fall. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal remains intact, and you can explore by boat the historic canal that helped put Georgetown on the map. A perfect way to end a day in this charming neighborhood is to explore the residential neighborhoods. Quaint Federaliststyle brownstones line the streets in all shapes, sizes and colors. If you look closely, you’ll see old streetcar tracks, dusty and disused, on some of the side streets.

hile this isn’t likely a field trip for you, nothing says D.C. like the city’s iconic monuments. The views from the Lincoln Memorial should not be skipped. My favorite time to view the monument is at night, on a moonlight tour or at sunrise. We all saw Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn kick back on these famous steps and pop a bottle of bubbly to salute a successful night of partying in Wedding Crashers. Now, I’m not suggesting you do the same, but perhaps make your champagne toast at dinner and take a moonlight stroll to visit Lincoln afterward.

any people look at leaving college as suddenly leaving the best days of our lives in the past. However, having been graduated nearly 6 months myself now, I can assure young college graduates that this is simply not true. As I was leaving my campus and the tears were flowing as I said my goodbyes, I couldn’t help but simultaneously be excited to start this new chapter of my life. I suddenly realized that my friends and I had it all at the tips of our fingers, but then it dawned on me that I wasn’t fully aware of how I could truly take advantage of this point in my life. When and where will we next be discovered as eager, young professionals? The answer is here and now

The transition from college to the real world is certainly a significant change, but just as there were ways to stand out on your college campus, the same is true for the real world. The smallest actions and habits can truly make a difference. If you’re wondering how to turn classroom etiquette into workplace etiquette, the rules are simple.

BE CONFIDENT

on’t be anyone but yourself. As you make your way into the workforce, you will quickly learn that there are expectations to be met and demands to be fulfilled. However, always remember that you were hired for a reason. On the day of your interview, or through the credentials you have highlighted on your résumé, someone saw something in you. Don’t be anyone but yourself, and always remember you having something to bring to the table. Be confident and feel comfortable in your own skin. If anything now, I have learned that empowerment is standing on my own two feet. You will quickly learn how to support yourself, and do not just mean financially, but mentally; this support begins with confidence. Always stay true to yourself and people will respect your certainty and confidence.

dress to impress
This includes dressing for your own comfort/personal preference, but also knowing what is appropriate for the workplace. You are still allowed to put a playful spin on your wardrobe even when you are making your way into the real world, so do not be afraid to add a little opulence. Allow yourself to stand out and shine. There are ways to still be fashionable and feminine, while still being timeless. Classic pencil skirts, sheath dresses, and cardigans can never steer you wrong. N’T BE AFRAID TO USE YOUR RESOURCES Just as you once had multiple libraries on campus at your disposal, you still have so many resources to advance your knowledge now that you have graduated. Don’t be afraid to seek them out, whether they be internet, books, or people. People are always willing to help others, especially when they recognize a hard worker, so don’t be afraid to ask!
K A LOT OF QUESTIONS No question is a dumb question. Never be ashamed to ask for help. You can conquer fears and obstacles in school or the work place by still gaining some assistance in the process of doing so.
KE YOURSELF HEARD Making big decisions can be incredibly rewarding. When you have an epiphany or think you may have an idea stirring up in your head, do not be afraid to share it. As young professionals, we should be finding ourselves in an innovative environment, therefore your creativity and new perspectives can only add to the atmosphere. Allow yourself to be outgoing. People want to get to know the real you, so do not be afraid to put yourself out there.

NO.86
STILL LISTEN Just as you may have a lot to say, your colleagues will as well. When you are in a meeting or even just working throughout the office, really listen to what people have to say. You never know when their idea or piece of advice can be useful to you or others.
SHOW UP ON TIME ...but not too early
While we are all eager to make those great first impressions, we have to keep in mind that we may still have extracurricular activities going on in our lives, which is a great thing! Certainly never show up late, whether it be to work or an event, but still remember to treat your personal time with respect. Find that balance of being a team player but still keeping your own goals at the forefront of your mind. Yes you want to succeed, but you still need time for you! Keeping this work etiquette in mind will allow you to continue to gain positive recognition from your boss and colleagues.
Your twenties are an opportune time to really take advantage of your appetite for new experiences. Don’t miss out on your opportunities that are right there in front of you. We all have dreams. Now is our chance to go chase them. Graduating college did not mark the end of our lives, but instead prompted a wonderful beginning. So ladies, here’s to finishing school!

COMMUTING
Hell hath no fury like public transit

The best solution to tackling your perilous commute is with sensible yet stylish outerwear, footwear and work wear that spans your 9-5 (or 6,7,8) stint and social engagements after. Those will be the key pieces that cover all manners of situations and sins — and you shouldn’t be afraid to invest in quality. These precious years before mortgages, babies and illicit affairs with the gardener are ripe with opportunity to make sartorial indulgences. By the time you’ve hit your early twenties and the steady downspiral of moral and physical decay has set in, you should know yourself well enough to discern what you’ll keep for years to come. By leveraging With that being said, when you’re getting full-price staple items with thrifted luxuries dressed in the morning it’s not only for the office, bought willy-nilly like a drunken sailor on shore but whatever magical and Narnia-esque adventure leave, you can make the most of what you have without compromising. you have while getting there. h, the joys and perils of commuting via NYC public transportation. A month ago on the subway a homeless man whacked me in the face with a newspaper like he was challenging me to a duel. Two days prior to that the doors closed on me multiple times, covering my legs and dress in black tar. Today the downtown trains were malfunctioning so I fought my way onto a bus only to get off two stops later because of heavy traffic and ran 20 blocks to work. On the bright side I achieved a new record: only one near death experience with oncoming taxis.

Take for example this versatile Brooks Brothers dress. It’s conservative enough for work yet its polka dot pattern and lightweight silk construction is perfect for hitting up cocktail hour. Unless the inevitable holiday season weight gain is more catastrophic than predicted, I plan on wearing the hell out of this. Disregard the croquet mallet and yes I’m sober.
Voila, another work-friendly outfit made up of key separates that didn’t break the bank. I snagged the suede heels from a GAP sale for $11 and they elevate my Brooks Brothers cargo pants that in turn make this Ann Taylor button-down more youthful. Throw on a pair of Warby Parker’s (hello, you can’t beat awesome $95 prescription glasses that double as charity) and you’re ready to write the shit out of some emails.

First impressions are priceless and unfortunately unpredictable. Luckily, now that cold weather is here you can hide wardrobe malfunctions under chic outer layers that instantly transform you from “unfortunate walking trainwreck” to “that bitch with the great Barbour coat.”
Here I’m sporting the Barbour Buttermere Duffle Coat that I’m more than slightly obsessed with. It evokes grown-up British school girl charm with a lux edge thanks to leather detailing and red piping with tartan accents on the hood. Barbour is synonymous with durability and quality, and this heritage-inspired silhouette will never go out of style so I’m assuming it will be passed down to future bastard spawn. Whether I’m commuting or aimlessly wandering around the city I always tend to have a large bag that can fit a water bottle, laptop, flats and banana because I turn into a monster when I have low blood sugar. I love this Hasso messenger bag because it holds the aforementioned and more, plus the leather is buttery soft and its androgynous look goes with everything.

A huge trend this season is utilitarian and army inspired pieces. But let’s face it, I’m not cool enough to wear camo. This Barbour Vintage Troop Parka is perfectly tailored to the season and even has me attempting a “come hither” look. Or I’m mesmerized by the Starbucks across the street. Let’s just assume the latter.

Name: Ashley Brooke Company: Ashley Brooke Designs Launch Date: June 2008 Hometown: Titusvillle, FL Current City: Orlando, FL College: UCF // Seminole State College Major: Interior Design
“Custom tailored paper for every unnecessary necessity.” First, give us a glimpse into a day in the life of Ashley Brooke… Every day is totally different, which I must admit is a big part of why I love my job! I do start each day similarly though, in that I usually get up and head out for a run or to the gym, spend some time doing my devotionals and then I open my inbox and hit the ground running! Each day usually involves some drawing, creative brainstorming & marketing, and some time engaging in social media. Now, why paper products? I’ve always loved paper! On my 16th birthday, the first place I drove was to our local Hallmark shop to buy thank you notes for the gifts I received! I just think there’s something really special about taking the time to write a card, address an envelope and put it in the mail versus sending a text or an email.
What made you launch your own business? If I am being completely honest, Ashley Brooke Designs came about through a series of unfortunate events. When I graduated, I had a fantastic job at a fancy interior design firm (my dream job). And as we all know, the economy and market took a turn for the worse, meaning the last hired (me) was laid off. For weeks I literally knocked on interior design firm doors all dressed up handing out my resume left and right. No one was hiring, everyone was in pure panic mode. So I did what any newly college graduate does with out a job, I moved home! Luckily for me my parents have a beautiful photography studio where they desperately needed a re-touch artist (or so they said!). I, of course took the job. My dad taught me a little bit every day about Photoshop, since they hired a retouch artist who had never used Photoshop

before, he had a big task ahead of him. Photoshop and I clicked, there was something about it that I just loved, and I became quite a good little retouch artist. But, we all knew, including me, that this was just until I figured things out. My dad constantly said “Just play around, see what happens” so that’s what I did. And of course my birthday rolled around and I needed some stationery to write thank you notes. I sketched out a few fun illustrations, scanned them in to my work computer, my dad showed me how to crop everything and print! Voila! Homemade stationery. From that day on, I had a new vision, a new passion, and definitely, a new obsession.
What is your dream collaboration? Anyone who knows me knows this is Kate Spade!! I just feel like our brands have similar attitudes and that our fun, colorful lifestyles would be a great partnership! And it’s KATE SPADE!
What is your advice to eager young women in their twenties, looking to start their own businesses? Oh, there is so much to say!! Most importantly be yourself, and let your personality, style, and “swagger” shine through. Don’t be afraid to fail or hear “no”, because each time you fail or hear “no” you are that much closer to “yes”. Lastly, Tell me a little bit about The Africa don’t be afraid to ask questions… no one knew Project... everything when they first started, everyone The Africa Project is so near and dear to my starts off in the same spot, clueless with a dream. heart! Our church, Summit Church in Orlando, FL has a wonderful Missions program that takes several trips to Malawi and Sierra Leone every year. After some close friends of mine came back from Africa, they shared that paper and pens are incredibly scarce in that region and I had an ‘a-ha moment’! I couldn’t imagine not having paper in my life, so I began to think about how we could fill that need and figured a “paper for paper” philosophy would be a great way to engage our clients and provide the much needed supplies! We’ve sent close to 100 notebooks and pens to children in Africa through a partnership with Children of Nations and Summit Church and we are excited to grow this part of our business in the coming months.

TERM I NATE WITH TU RM ERI C
My South Asian descent comes along with a mother that is obsessed with natural remedies. Luckily, somewhere in her nature box, I’ve found a remedy that actually does help during the tough stressful times. Turmeric is a yellow powdery substance that has been used in India for over 2000 years for all kinds of things from medicinal reasons, as a dye, and as a spice in foods. This spice has a long list of benefits, but is most known for its anti-inflammatory
properties. Turmeric is also a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent. My favorite way to consume this wonder spice is to warm up a glass of milk and add half a teaspoon of turmeric. Make sure and drink the concoction while it’s still warm and add a drop of honey if you don’t like the taste (it grows on you). Also, be careful not to get any on your fingers or nails because it stains them yellow!

while the water is still warm. This will be pretty sour so add some sweetener if you want.
Cut them in half and squeeze into a tall glass of warm water! No really, hot lemon water has incredible benefits. This is one of my favorite quick pick-me-ups. I try to stay away from cold medicine which tends to make me feel sluggish and groggy, so I love this since it doesn’t do either of the above. As soon as I start feeling like I’m stressed out, not getting enough sleep, or feeling a cold coming on, I start drinking this simple concoction. All you need is one 8 oz. glass of warm (not hot) water and half of a lemon. Squeeze as much of the lemon as you can into the water and drink

Truth be told, you can find tons of home remedies and medicines to help relieve your stress, but your attitude is key. If you have a good attitude, you will feel good. Often times we let the stress take over us and this digs us into a deeper hole. Take time out to relax and do something fun. Do

The lemon juice in the water is acidic in general, but becomes alkalizing in the body, which is good for pH balance. Warm lemon water is also great for digestion especially if taken in the morning before breakfast and at night before sleeping. Another benefit is that lemons are packed with potassium, vitamin C, and other important minerals which can aid in getting over a cold or the Monday morning blues.

For those of us that don’t find themselves carrying a tub of turmeric or a bag of lemons on a daily basis, I have an alternate solution that I like to call my “handy-dandy medicine cabinet.” This is basically a small make-up bag or pouch with my favorite pick-me-ups for when I’m in class or at work. I like to fill mine with things like: ( 1 ) throat lozenges for that scratchy, itchy throat, ( 2 ) a breakfast bar for a quick boost of energy without the groggy aftereffects of coffee/caffeine, ( 3 ) a packet of tissues for the oh-so-annoying nose on the run (do not use facial tissue, it’ll leave your nose dried up and chafed- ew), and (4) a small pill box to hold everything from Advil/Tylenol for a headache to necessities like birth control, vitamins Midol, etc.

The
Giving Season {
D
By Abby Baker Thrasher - @AbGabGal
uring the holidays, it’s easy to get stuck in a giving rut. The tradition of giving and receiving presents is often meaningful, but so often it becomes a game of expectations. What do my friends and family members expect to get from me this year? What do I expect to find under my own tree? Wants turn into needs as wish lists are distributed well before Thanksgiving. Unwittingly, we become a little selfish during
{
this Giving Season. Our thoughtfulness and shopping budgets are usually forgotten in the frenzied weeks leading up to Christmas and Hanukkah. It is, therefore, important to take pause and find a way to give beyond the office’s annual Yankee Swap. Between now and New Year’s is the perfect opportunity to be mindful and consider making the conscious decision to give back to the community, whether on a local or global level.

- Monetary Donations With countless non-profits embracing the internet, it takes only a few clicks to give. Giving to organizations that complete work overseas, like UNICEF and Water.org, is best done via check or credit card. Unless you are personally traveling halfway around the world, a one-time or recurring donation can go towards large-scale operations. The Internet also allows you the awesome opportunity to give a gift with a purpose; many sites let you make a donation in someone’s honor or memory.
- Volunteering When you’re young and starting off, extra cash for monetary donations is hard to come by, believe me. Volunteering a few hours here and there is an affordable alternative if you want to get involved with philanthropy. The added benefit is that you get to personally see the impact you are making. Opportunities to volunteer are easily accessible. Local organizations can help match you with a project in need of an extra set of hands. To become involved in my community, I became a member of the Junior League, “an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.” Through the Junior League, I have been able to work in my community and make a change. No matter the magnitude of your service, every effort you make to help others is bound to brighten someone’s day, even your own!

“The added benefit is that you get to personally see the impact you are making.”
- Don’t Forget Giving is an act of generosity, your intentions may be good, but not necessarily everyone else’s. Do your research. Only give money to trusted organizations and never show up to volunteer without knowing where you’re going. Unsure of an organization’s legitimacy? Talk to people within your community, your local Junior League chapter’s website is also a great resource. If you have a friend who already volunteers somewhere, ask to tag along, you’re guaranteed a mentor to guide you through the process.

Once you have a basic understanding of CP soap making, you can tackle most recipes out there. This one will yield a dreamy batch of Pumpkin Spice Soap, just begging to be used and gifted! Who doesn’t love the warm color of pumpkin or the rich, spicy scent of cinnamon and nutmeg?

pumpkin Spice Soap
Remember to weigh all your ingredients on a scale using ounces (not fluid ounces)
15.3 oz. Cocoa Butter
Slightly adapted from Pumpkin Soap by David Fisher for About.com
15.3 oz. Olive Oil 12.8 oz. Coconut Oil 2.5 oz. Castor Oil 5.1 oz. Sunflower Oil 3 tsp. of sugar in the water before the lye 1.5 tsp. of salt in the water before the lye
3 oz. of canned pumpkin (pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling!) 2 tsp. of pumpkin pie spice 2.2 oz. of Pumpkin Pie Fragrance Oil 7.2 oz. Lye 15 oz. of water

Again, follow the original tutorial. There are only a few steps to complete for this recipe that differ from the tutorial instructions.
NO.120
{ Directions }
1.
Before you mix your Lye Solution, add 3 tsp. sugar and 1.5 tsp. salt to the water.
2.
After your Lye Solution and your melted oils have cooled to about 100º F, pour the Lye Solution into the oils and mix, but don’t bring them to trace! Just mix until they are well blended. Portion out 1/4 of the mixture into a separate small bowl and set it aside.
3.
To the larger portion of soap mixture, add your pumpkin puree and your pumpkin pie fragrance oil. Mix until blended.
4.
Back to the smaller portion of soap mixture, add your spices and mix well. Be sure that there are no spice clumps left behind!
5.
Once both portions of your mixture have reached trace, it’s time to pour! To get a swirl effect in your soap, pour one layer of the pumpkin mixture into the bottom of your mold, then pour a layer of spice, then more pumpkin, then more spice. Repeat until you run out of soap. Once your layers have been poured, take a spoon and gently swirl through the soap. Be careful not to swirl too much or you’ll mix the layers together.
6.
Cover your mold and let it cure overnight. If you used a loaf mold, slice your bars the next day and set them on a parchment lined cookie sheet in a cool dry place to finish curing for 4-6 weeks. If you used a cavity mold, simply de-mold the bars and spread them out on a sheet for the 4-6 week cure, again in a cool dry place.
These soaps are pretty and rustic, with a lovely scent you’ll enjoy all season long.

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 375º F and grease a baking sheet. 2. In a bowl, mix apples, cranberries, cinnamon, pecans and brown sugar together. This is the filling. 3. Begin with phyllo dough. Cover remaining dough with a damp tea towel to ensure it doesn’t dry out. 4. Brush the sheet of phyllo dough with melted butter. Lay a second sheet of phyllo dough on top and brush again with melted butter. Cut dough into eight equal squares. 5. Spoon 1-2 tbsp of filling into the center of each dough square. Bring corners into center and pinch together to form a bundle. 6. Place on baking sheet, brush bundles with melted butter and sprinkle with brown sugar. 7. Repeat process with two remaining sheets of phyllo dough. 8. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Once done, cool for 5 minutes, then carefully remove from baking sheet and cool.

hen we were eight, we both begged our moms to let us help mash the potatoes. By twelve, we were promoted to greeters as we welcomed family and friends into our homes and took their coats. And by seventeen, we had already finalized all plans for our graduation
parties. After living in cramped corners our freshman year, we rediscovered our passion for hosting parties and bringing all of our friends together. When we threw our first gettogether in our new apartment, we thought it would be so simple. What’s so hard about making some finger food and inviting a dozen or so friends? When a dozen turned into thirty, and four ramekins were not enough to hold all of our artichoke dip, we panicked. With fifteen minutes until guests were to arrive, we were still hovering over the oven, setting up chairs, and cleaning the kitchen. But with time, we have learned how to perfect the art of entertaining. Follow our advice to learn the tricks of throwing an effortless party:
NO.126
START WITH THE BASICS It may seem silly, but the first step is to evaluate your space. Do you have a table in a dorm room or an island in an apartment? Either way, you can tailor the event based on your environment. Think about the type of event you want to plan. We have hosted dinners, drop-ins, movie nights and more. How long do you want people to stay? What night of the week are you hosting people? These decisions will help you decide your menu (e.g. small bites) and party size.
INVITING YOUR FRIENDS We tend to invite our friends before we’ve planned all the details. Why? We want to make sure they’ve marked their calendars and are able to come! Depending on the size of the party, think about how
you want to invite people. Since everyone is inundated with Facebook events, we’ve found sending a group a email (or even individual emails) to friends has been the most effective. And word of mouth always works! When planning who to invite, don’t fret about all your guests not knowing each other. We have found that our best events have been when we have invited different groups of people -- our parties are a great way for people to meet and get to know someone new.
DEVELOPING THE DETAILS
Once we’ve figured out all of the logistics, we like to dive right into the fun stuff: creating a menu and developing a decorative theme. One of the best ways to start brainstorming food for our events is to turn to our favorite social network -- Pinterest! Since we plan our events together, we typically create a shared Pinterest board that allows us to share creative recipes and ideas, from decorating a table to arranging flowers.
We try to include a balance of savory and sweet foods when creating our menu, and we always think about ease of enjoying the event. If you don’t have somewhere for everyone to sit, it is usually better to make nonmessy finger foods, allowing guests to stand, be social, and eat with their hands. Think about it. Who wants to be standing around talking to someone while simultaneously using a fork and knife to chow down a slice of lasagna? Just imagine how much easier (and more graceful) this scenario would be if instead you were holding onto a mini corn-dog.
On top of Pinterest, you can find us searching online for popular recipes, calling our moms for help with family secrets, and experimenting in the kitchen to create something new. For our fall party, we knew we wanted to use seasonal ingredients, so we searched for recipes that incorporated maple and pecans -- and the results were delicious maple pecan biscuits!
NO.128
DURING THE PARTY
GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND You have your date. Your guests have been invited. Your menu is planned and ingredients are purchased. That’s it, right? Wrong! The most important part of any party is giving it a little personality. What makes it YOU?
When the party finally arrives, your job isn’t over! As the hostess, be sure to mingle with everyone, especially if you’ve invited someone who doesn’t know anyone else. Keep an eye on the food and drinks, and replenish when things start to get too low. Create a balance between the time you spend in the kitchen From buying bright and the time you spend making sure everyone flowers to colorful is having a good time. Take lots of pictures, plates and napkins, and don’t forget to eat the food yourself you can add an extra special touch to any party that will impress your guests. We love to create name tents for each dish -- it’s a fun way to spruce up the table and eliminates the need for everyone to ask, “what is that?” We’ve blown up red balloons for Valentine’s Day, bought small pumpkins for Halloween, and always do our best to have seasonally colored M&Ms in bowls for easy snacking and decorating.
NO.129
- you deserve to enjoy the results of your hard work. And finally, have FUN! We’ve run out of food and had our fair share of last minute blunders, but at the end of the night, all we remember are the friends we invited, the laughs we shared, and the food we enjoyed. Good luck and happy planning!
