LETTER FROM
THE DIRECTOR Friends and Families of CEF, We opened our fall recruiting season in September in Grand Rapids at the Verdier House. I listened to Dr. David Verdier, a longtime Island School parent and Cape Eleuthera Island School Board Director, talk to the prospective students and their families about what The Island School has meant to his three older children (Renee S’03, Travis S’05, Eric S’09). “The most powerful takeaway is the confidence that comes from believing in yourself, learning how to bust through obstacles and take on real-world challenges.” It is this confidence that fuels our mission which is all about what happens after students leave the Rock Sound Airport and head back home. Almost every week I receive an email IS alumni Jack Martin (S’13), Danny Goldman (S’13), Chris Foote (F’12), and Anna Marsh (S’13) raised or have a conversation that makes me proud of what our money to build a solar suitcase. alumni are doing out in the world. IS alumni at Lawrenceville, Danny Goldman (S’13), Jack Martin (S’13), Chris Foote (F’12) and Anna Marsh (S’13), raised money to build a solar suitcase and Danny traveled to Kenya and helped bring light to the Egesa Childrens’ Center. This is an amazing story and yet there are so many examples of Island School leadership in the world. This Fall, I was with Cape Eleuthera Island School Board Director Ben Snyder and his wife, Sarah, and loved hearing that their daughter Abby (S’06) spent two years with Teach for America working in an underserved community in New Orleans. She now works for a KIPP School and continues to pay it forward. Eric Verdier (S’09) was just passing through home on his way out to a new job in Colorado working with renewable energy systems. Luke Sasek (S’10) designed his own semester away experience working with us at the new Center for Sustainable Development. He is now driving hard to help other Michigan State University students find opportunities on Cape Eleuthera to do real work and follow their passions while also receiving credit. Hannah Druckenmiller (F’07) is off to Brazil to be part of a think tank working to solve some of the pressing food security issues in the region. These are stories from just one week and every day there are more. I am proud of our alumni and excited to be welcoming three alumni leaders to our Cape Eleuthera Foundation and Cape Eleuthera Island School Boards, Meg Bunn (F’01), Nick Del Vecchio (F’02) and Johann Scheidt (S’02), all of whom are volunteering their time to help us keep The Island School soaring and true to our mission of Leadership Effecting Change. Please send in stories and help us by nominating a fellow alumni to receive our Cacique Maxey Alumni Award to be announced in the New Year. I hope you can hear a big blast on the conch shell from me as a thank you to all our amazing alumni who really stepped up and gave this year for another successful CONCHtribution! Thank you! LETTER FROM
DIRECTOR OF IS PROGRAM Dear Friends, As you all know, students are greeted with quite a demanding schedule upon arrival. Still, we stress the importance of finding time and space to reflect on their experience, re-tell a story, re-imagine a reality and re-design an unsustainable system. Well, believe it or not, the staff has an equally formidable schedule awaiting them. So, in all fairness, I feel inclined to do the same, to allow for a paradox of regression, a moment to step back. As of late, my mind and heart remain afloat over the question ‘why’- why is this place needed. Education means “to draw forth, to educe”. The truth of that word – education – is what pushed Chris and Pam to start this journey, and is what continues to push us, wild-eyed and hopeful, into year 16. To be part of this community, some part of you must want a return to the roots of education. There is not a lack of education, just a lack of the right kind of education. The problem is that theories are favored over values, concepts over humans, and answers over questions. As we dive into the 2014-15 school year, continuing to draw forth and educe, The Island School remains grounded in values, humans and questions. The value of diversity - extending the reach of our vision across racial, economic and cultural borders - was embraced, as 10 City Bridge Scholars were welcomed to campus this summer. From Abaco to Accra, these scholars represented 67% of our total financial aid budget. Our investment in people was seen as a former boathouse employee turned Marine Ecology educator brought his beautiful newborn to work, proudly showing off his new office – and future – as an IS Marine Ecology teacher. The retention of two experienced teachers proved even more rewarding as their son walked into his first day as a DCMS student. We are proud that this campus, this community, continues to create space for inquiry. As we move toward more and more overlap within the foundation and between disciplines, the curriculum is no longer centered on mastery of subject matter, but rather, mastery of one’s person. Every year is different, but grounding the student experience is the ability to engage and embrace their own meaning. They feel ownership of their learning as it accounts for emergent, transformative and participatory experiences. So, as we move forward and conventional education seems heavily favored in the fight against change, the question becomes, “How do we better approach the fight?” Well people, I think we are trying to do just that down here in Eleuthera. And when I say we, I mean staff, students, supporters and parents alike. As we witness these students over the next year, remember that change must not come as some separate domain, away from other lessons and teachings, but rather as a transformative force that connects to all aspects of education. As we witness these students, let us all remember why we are involved with The Island School, so that we continue to remain energetic, creative and hopeful in our pursuit of living well in a place. Thank you for your continued support of The Island School,
Peter Zdrojewski

THE ISLAND SCHOOL 15 YEAR CELEBRATION IN BOSTON Cameron Powel
T
he Island School celebrated its 15th anniversary on January 4th, 2014 at the New England Aquarium in Boston, MA. Despite the inclement weather, 500 friends, families, alumni and supporters of the program turned out to celebrate this milestone event. Even our beloved kitchen ladies who have been with The Island School from the beginning also made the trek up from Eleuthera. The celebration kicked off in the IMAX Theater of the New England Aquarium where attendees had the opportunity to listen to the keynote speakers of the night. Chris Maxey introduced Sylvia Earle, president of the Ocean Research and Conservation Association (ORCA) and a senior scientist and former Cape Eleuthera Foundation (CEF) board member. She addressed our responsibility as humans living on this planet to do what we can to save our home. She reiterated that young leaders like Island School alumni are the living hope we have for a better future for our environment.

CEF Board Chairman and Island School alumni parent, Ernie Parizeau (Kate F’03, Doug S’06, Molly S’10, Sam S’14), introduced the next speaker, Ron Liebowitz, president of Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT. Liebowitz shared the importance of place-based learning and leadership opportunities throughout all levels of education, pre-school through university. Edd Brooks, program manager of Shark Research and Conservation at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, spoke next sharing a video showcasing the groundbreaking research

that is happening in The Bahamas. His talk was a perfect segue to an address from Ambassador Elliston Rahming, the Bahamian Ambassador to the United States, given his recent appointment as Chairman of the United Nations Committee for Shark Conservation. He spoke about the Committee’s dedication to saving sharks and commended The Island School for its leadership in shark research and preservation. Before the guests moved to the main floor of the New England Aquarium for a beautiful cocktail reception, Chris Maxey took the stage again to present the first ever Maxey Cacique Alumni Award to Francesca Forrestal, Fall 1999 Island School alumna and PhD candidate in Marine Biology. Maxey also announced Cape Eleuthera Foundation’s fundraising campaign, Sharing Solutions totaling $15,000,000. It is the organization’s first ever major campaign and includes a holistic fundraising effort from capital to endowment to operation to annual fund support. Thank you to everyone who came to the event, and more importantly to everyone has supported us over the past 15 years. We look forward to the next 15 years--and beyond!

ISLAND SCHOOL CELEBRATES CITY BRIDGE PARTNERSHIPS Pam Maxey & Taylor Hoffman
I
n th e Su mm e r o f 2 0 1 4 , we welcomed 10 City Bridge Scholars to our campus. City Bridge Partnerships connect The Island School to inner city students who we would otherwise not be able to access. We find that by providing transformative growth opportunities to these deserving students, their world is expanded while our own is immeasurably enriched. The City Bridge program continues to inspire young people to make a difference and emerge as leaders within their home communities. This year, 67% of our total financial aid budget was allocated to support our City Bridge Scholars. These programs helped

students from New York City, San Francisco, Tanzania, and Ghana make their way to Eleuthera. In four short weeks, these students were pushed far beyond their comfort zones as The Island School continually encouraged each to refine their understanding of the environment and community in which they live. One student’s advisor noticed how profound this experience was to our Horizon’s Scholar, Sahara Lewis. “During our four day tour of Eleuthera for the Tourism & Development course, Sahara was not always the most outspoken member of a class discussion. However, when Sahara

would speak up, there was a sincerity and thoughtfulness in her contribution that made it very clear that she was deeply engaged. Sahara seamlessly connected her personal life experiences to others’ experiences she learned about in readings, on site visits, and through interviews with Eleutherans. Throughout the summer, Sahara was fearless and showed significant growth, coming out of her shell, taking risks, and embracing the community she lives in.” In addition to our City Bridge program, the Admissions Team is especially proud to state that approximately 30% of our student body attends The Island School with the support of a generous financial aid budget made possible in part through donor support. Our admissions strategy moving forward is to continue to seek these partnerships and expand them into our semester program. We believe that The Island School program is an invaluable experience that every student should have access to, regardless of the tuition cost. We will continue to provide this access through our outreach and strong donor support. Celeste Adderley - BREEF Scholar

nvasive lionfish from the Indo-Pacific have been devastating the reefs of The Bahamas since they were first seen here in 2004. The gluttonous predators consume high numbers of juvenile native fish, including economically and ecologically critical species like grouper and parrotfish. They have been linked to reduced numbers of fish on reefs as well as reduced sizes of the fish that are there. Fortunately, lionfish are delicious! The Cape Eleuthera Institute and The Island School launched the “You Slay, We Pay” campaign in April 2014 to purchase lionfish from local fishermen. Fillet and whole fish purchase prices were set to encourage the start of a productive fishery, to provide competitive alternatives to lobster (during whose closed season the campaign was launched) and to encourage the supply of whole fish since further dissection data can be gleaned from entire fish carcasses. Over 300 specimens were brought in through the campaign, which allowed CEI to take external photographs and measurements as well as collect full dissection data through gut content analyses, gape measurements, gonad weights, and maturity determinations. Lionfish fillets, both those bought directly and those filleted from dissected fish by local fisherman Floyd McKinney, were served in The Island School’s dining hall and at special events for both The Island School students and their families as well as local students and community members. Over the course of the four-month campaign, almost 500 lbs of lionfish were purchased and consumed. These came from hundreds of individual fish, the largest of which measured a massive 42.3 cm in length and was brought in by top slayer Wendle Symonette of Rock Sound. The Slayer campaign proved hugely successful on multiple fronts. Not only were dissection records supplemented and delicious meals supplied, but CEI was thrilled to see the enthusiasm and excitement of involved local fishermen. Friendly competition for the most lionfish and the largest lionfish was rampant. Additionally, by encouraging this new potential fishery there may be a reduction in pressures on native reef fish – not only will fishermen have more sustainable and diverse targets, but the invasive predators consuming juvenile natives might also be controlled.
Floyd McKinney filleting lionfish.
In addition to the potential extension of the campaign yearround, an Eleutheran jewelry workshop under the tutelage of local artists exploring the crafting of aesthetic and artistic pieces from spines and fins harvested from campaign lionfish is in the works. We are also looking for the addition of lionfish to the restaurant menus around Deep Creek, as local owners are seeing happy tasters and increasing supply. We hope to continue the campaign and buy lionfish all year round! Dissecting lionfish stomach.

his iconic statement by Gandhi has resonated around the world and become a call to action for many. At the Cape Eleuthera Foundation, this belief is at the heart of all the work done by our main grantee programs: The Island School, Deep Creek Middle School, Cape Eleuthera Institute and Center for Sustainable Development. When we looked at our inherent capacity for change, our responsibility to share became undeniable and fueled our passion to launch the Sharing Solutions Campaign. This past January, we publicly announced the Sharing Solutions Campaign during The Island School’s 15-year anniversary celebration at the New England Aquarium in Boston, MA. This bold campaign, which aims to raise $15 million over five years, is the largest effort in our history. At the heart of its vision is establishing a fiscally sustainable future so our ability and legacy of sharing will span out long into the future. We are proud to announce we have raised 90% of our goal to date, and it is through the support of our loyal alumni, parents and friends of the organization that this has been made possible. Sharing Solutions is a holistic fundraising effort from capital to endowment to operation to annual fund support. The main goal of Sharing Solutions is to establish a fiscally responsible and sustainable future for The Island School, Deep Creek Middle School, Cape Eleuthera Institute and other main grantees of the organization. STAFF SPOTLIGHT:
OSCAR KNOWLES Amelia Howard
S
ince January of 2014, Oscar Knowles has held the position of facilities manager at The Island School. An integral part of the Center for Sustainable Development team and of the larger Cape Eleuthera Island School community, Oscar has become the go-to guy for repairs on campus. For anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting him, Oscar is a positive and progressive thinker with determination for quick and effective results.
Born and raised in Nassau, Oscar brings with him the buzzing energy of city life and an extensive knowledge of construction. Throughout his upbringing, Oscar learned skills from his father, founder of Arthur Knowles Carpentry Shop. Having developed a desire to pursue construction professionally, Oscar earned his carpentry certification, learning skills such as technical drawing. He began working as site supervisor and foreman at The Design Group Architects in 1996 and continued his work there for six years. Following his time at TDG, Oscar became the lead installer at Bahamas Woodworking Studio, and continued his career as a self-employed construction supervisor until embarking on his journey as Facilities Manager at The Island School. As facilities manager, Oscar wants to see the continued teamwork of the facilities coworkers that he supervises. Seeing his team work as a unit without professional hierarchies “gives [him] energy, gives [him] life, and makes [him] happy about being here.” Each day, the Facilities team tends to pending requests from community members. These appeals range from broken vehicles to biodiesel production to clogged drainpipes. If something needs mending, Oscar handles it. As a conservationist, Oscar actively monitors the water usage around campus, recognizing its importance as a finite resource. Understanding that resources are often limited, Oscar is constantly seeking creative solutions to requests from all parts of the organization. Oscar says that his 17 year-old son, Joshua, and 10 year-old daughter, Jade, are “two extensions of himself.” Having his two kids in Eleuthera with him is “the total comfort; the total joy.” While Joshua pursues a scholarship in St. Louis, Missouri, Jade will remain at home in Deep Creek. She was thrilled to start her first year at Deep Creek Middle School as a Grade Seven student. According to her proud father, “Jade is enjoying DCMS to the fullest.” Oscar and his family fully recognize Eleuthera’s magic: “it sort of gives you the feeling that this is the place you always should have been.” Oscar is excited to continue building a life for himself and his family here on the Cape and expects to see the organization grow in future years. And as an invaluable asset to The Island School community, Oscar has us hoping that he stays.

DEEP CREEK MIDDLE SCHOOL EXCHANGE WITH CAMDEN ROCKPORT MIDDLE SCHOOL Megan Kelly
E
very year, the 8th grade students at Deep Creek Middle School do a school exchange with a partner in The United States. This year, 13 DCMS students spent a week in Camden, Maine visiting the Camden Rockport Middle School. In turn, their host buddies will visit Eleuthera in February. As DCMS Principal Odette Pretty says, “It is so beneficial for our students to have a cultural exchange. Being away from Eleuthera allows them to appreciate what we have here and see our community with fresh eyes, while expanding their world.”
The trip fits into the school’s science curriculum because as seventh graders, they learn about marine ecology. The Maine trip included
several days at Tanglewood Learning Center, an outdoor education center where the students studied forest ecology and species identification. The students appreciated the opportunity to study ecology in a coastal setting that is different from their own. Kenvado Knowles of Tarpum Bay said that “The dark water color was surprising!” Despite the frigid temperature, several DCMS students bravely swam in the ocean. For Knowles, it was the best part of the trip. In addition to their time at Tanglewood, the students attended an engineering class at the middle school, focused on a project of building bridges with popsicle sticks and glue. The metaphor of this activity was not lost on Simeon Bethel of Governor’s Harbor: “I learned, a few days after we got back to Eleuthera, that the meaning of the trip was to make connections, or in my eyes, build bridges.”
families was frequently cited as the students’ favorite part of the trip. The Maine hosts had planned various activities, such as bowling, apple picking, and iceskating. Cierrah Ferguson of Wemyss Bight said, “Ice skating was so difficult! That was really surprising to me.” Rock Sound’s Brenae Williams agrees: “The best part of the trip was when I got to go ice skating. It was scary, but I got to learn a little bit.” The students are already looking forward to reuniting with their new friends when the Camden Rockport Middle School students visit in February. In the meantime, Simeon Bethel wants to know, “When can I go back?”

CAPE ELEUTHERA INSTITUTE PARTNERS WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS BY PROVIDING FIELD-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCES Tiffany Gray
O
utreach and education are important parts of the mission of the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) and the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD). In 2013, CEI and CSD started the Local Schools Program to encourage schools in Eleuthera to visit campus or partner with CEI researchers for class presentations. The mission of the Local Schools Program is to share research from CEI and CSD with young Bahamian students through classroom and field-based learning experiences. Students focus on understanding principles of marine conservation and environmental stewardship, participate in actual research and get hands-on experience with topics covered in the national curriculum.
For the 2013-2014 school year, 726 participants experienced a class visit or field trip through the Local Schools Program. Almost every school in Eleuthera participated in some way, and at Tarpum Bay Primary School, every single grade participated in a field learning experience on CEI’s campus. “The trip, which focused on mangroves, was very educational. The interaction with the instructors was excellent,” said Mrs. Miller, grade six teacher. Focusing on topics such as waste management, permaculture, queen conch, and the invasive lionfish, students are encouraged to value Bahamian marine resources through hands-on, experiential education. By getting up close and personal with these valuable resources, students discover firsthand the need for their protection and management. After the school year ended in June, outreach continued
13
throughout the summer with five educational camps offered for students of South Eleuthera. Deep Creek Middle School teamed up with CEI and CSD to offer programs ranging from a Plastic Pollution Camp, “Marine Debris & Me”, to a high school level college preparatory program. It was also CSD’s first year offering its own Sustainability Camp where students were immersed in small island sustainability focusing on renewable energy, water conservation and sustainable design. In addition to hosting in-house educational summer camps, Lead Outdoor Educator and CEI Outreach Coordinator Tiffany Gray spent two weeks in August 2014 supporting the youth organization Space to Create in Harbour Island. In 2013, Space to Create launched a pilot environmental education program called Space to Explore. This year they expanded, making it the first full-fledged environmental conservation, education and research summer program offered on Harbour Island, including an overnight camping trip to mainland Eleuthera and coral reef surveys at Man Island. The Founder and Director of Space to Create and former DCMS Teacher Will Simmons is excited about the partnership between CEI and Space to Explore. “The Cape Eleuthera Institute has enormous potential to build capacity in local conservation efforts. Their support this year provided an absolutely transformative experience to campers who experienced this island in a new and exciting way. Partnership is the key to building better communities for our kids. This was partnership in action.” It’s not the first time we have focused on outreach efforts, but the formal establishment of the Local Schools Program provides the foundation for expanding these relationships and building a cohesive support system for the primary and secondary schools of Eleuthera. The Local Schools Program has the potential to grow to the national level, gaining support from schools on other outer islands, such as Abaco and Exuma, through multiple day programs staying overnight on our sustainable campus. In these ways, the Local Schools Program strives to support and supplement students’ experiences to engage a future generation of scientists, eco-tourism guides, and policy makers in the Bahamas.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT:
NICK LANZA (S’10) Mik Cooper & Cameron Powel
“
T
he Island School helped me to find direction.”
That is a statement often heard from the mouths of IS alumni. It is especially true for Spring 2010 alumnus and Marine Ecology teacher, Nick Lanza, whose semester experience at The Island School four years ago has helped steer him directly back to Cape Eleuthera, where it all began. Nick is not the only Island School alumnus who has found his way “home.” He is joined by veteran teacher Catherine Klem (F’03), and new staff Tom Bunn (S’07), Mik Cooper (F’07), and Tom McDonough (S’08). Together, IS alumni make up a whopping one third of the faculty here this year!
“I haven’t allowed myself to leave for more than a year at a time. I tried to stay away after 2010 but came back in 2012 - and every year following,” says Nick, who spent the past three summers as a Summer Term Alumni Mentor and has now earned his role as a full-time Marine Ecology teacher. After The Island School, Nick began to search for colleges that focused on experiential-based education like The Island School. He finally found his niche at Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona. He graduated with a degree in Environmental studies with an emphasis in Natural History and a minor in Adventure Education, focusing on Nautical Exploration. Nick first returned to The Island School as a Summer Term Alumni Mentor in 2012. In 2013 Nick rejoined the Summer Term staff and also completed work for his senior project. He worked closely with Peter Zdrojewski, director of The Island School and former Marine Ecology teacher, to further develop the existing Marine Ecology curriculum and weave in a theme of Natural History to all of the coursework. These changes were then implemented by both the Marine Ecology and Literature teachers the following fall and spring semesters. One of Nick’s most memorable experiences as a student was when he first referred to The Island School’s remote, limestone campus on Cape Eleuthera as “home.” “I remember I was by a mangrove estuary - I was wet, cold, and muddy and I just wanted to go home. But for the first time, I did not mean Cape May, New Jersey. I was referring to The Island School. From here, I was able to see this community in a new light - beyond normal classroom walls. My teachers and classmates were my mentors and friends.” Now as a teacher and advisor, Nick continues to share that same belief of the tight-knit, supportive Island School community with the new crop of students. We hope you can join us in welcoming Nick back “home” to The Island School!
