It is with great admiration for all of the talented wedding artists included in the following pages that I present this second issue of Sweet Violet Bride. Just when I’ve seen a wedding, a styled shoot, or perhaps even a single photograph that seems to me the most beautiful thing I’ve ever set eyes on, I am then floored by yet even more beauty. In this issue we are inspired by texture, light, and fairy tale romance near and far. You’ll get a glimpse of styled and real weddings in Oregon, Florida, Colorado, California, Ireland, Iceland, and Italy to name a few. But no matter where you plan to have your wedding the most important thing is who you’re standing with when you say “I do.” And of course secondly, plenty of gorgeous details – whether those be found in the natural landscape, or inspired by your favorite landscape. A green wedding is any wedding where the couple tries to decrease the impact of their event on the planet - and there are many ways to do it without sacrificing style or elegance! Green weddings are eco-chic, which means they are every bit as gorgeous as conventional weddings, but without the waste. And, amazingly enough, going green can save you money.
1.
Use an eco-conscious jeweler who uses ethically sourced diamonds, gems and metals or recycled stones and metals. Family heirlooms and vintage rings are also a sustainable, less expensive option.
2.
Use recycled, post-consumer waste or tree-free paper for invitations, RSVP cards, etc. as well as soy inks to reduce environmental impact.
3.
Opt for virtual correspondence with guests as a paperless alternative to invitations, RSVPs, etc.
4.
Consider hosting any wedding showers, bachelor/bachelorette parties or other events close to home to cut down on travel-related greenhouse gas emissions.
5.
Green restaurants, vineyards, museums or art galleries are great wedding locations that are eco friendly and support the natural world as well as cultural awareness.

If you’re considering a destination wedding, look for eco-retreat options that are available locally or choose a Green Globe certified resort.

Instead of buying off the rack, find a designer that offers eco-friendly gowns made from sustainable materials or choose a once-worn gown.

In summer 2013 Celia Grace bridal joined the Fair Trade Federation and became America’s first line of Fair Trade wedding dresses. To celebrate the launch of its first bridal collection, Celia Grace has shared these breathtaking images with us from its eco and “voluntourism” photo shoot in Belize. “Celia Grace’s first-ever bridal collection was inspired by exquisite silks, nature, and inspiring women,” says owner Marcelia Muehlke. Each dress is simply elegant and romantic with a touch of vintage and bohemian influences. Thanks to light-as-air silk, Celia Grace wedding dresses are comfortable and flattering, making them perfect for warm weather destinations. To showcase their dresses Celia Grace teamed up with a group of eco-conscious and socially-responsible companies to produce a photo shoot to highlight these eco and Fair Trade dresses and to show brides different ways they can give back (and get more) from their destination wedding or honeymoon. The photo shoot took place around Belize on the beach, in the jungle, at Mayan ruins, at an eco resort, and at a rescue zoo for endangered species.
Q&A with Celia Grace SVB: How did Celia Grace start? CG: The idea to create a line of wedding gowns that give back came from my experience looking for a dress for my wedding. I wanted to wear something really special—a wedding dress that would make me look exquisite and feel beautiful —because it was made in a way that helped rather than harmed people or the environment. But I couldn’t find anything like that! That was when I realized I could create a win-win for women around the world. I could give brides a more beautiful, joyful, and meaningful wedding and pay seamstresses in developing countries a living wage so they could better themselves, their family, and their community. SVB: What is Fair Trade? CG: Fair Trade is a global movement to end poverty by giving consumers in the developed world the ability to choose products made under safe, healthy, and fair conditions in developing countries. Rylee + Andrew Private Residence, Alabama 3-23-2013 When Rylee and Andrew met at 14 and 17 years old at summer camp, Andrew had had his eye on her for six months. When he finally worked up the courage to get to know her, he won her heart in a weekend. Fast forward five years later; he surprised her one evening as they were swinging in her backyard hammock. Rylee’s dog ran out to them with a silk ribbon and diamond ring he had tied around her neck. It was that same backyard where they had a beautiful Italian inspired ceremony and became husband and wife. Almost everything was done by family with special meaning – right down to the handmade gown, shoes, ceremony arch, candles, feast, and even hand laid brick patio and tables! Their woodland tablescape, these magical photos, and their story of true love has our hearts fluttering as if we’ve just read a fairytale. Here’s what Rylee has to say: I loved putting on my dress – within each hand-stitched thread held so many memories. The fall before the wedding, my mom & I found a delicate silky soft piece of lace we knew would be a great inspiration for the dress. Joy Thigpen then sat me down for a creative session and blew my mind as she gracefully and magically pulled my
desires for the dress and the wedding out of my heart and put them onto paper. We then met the wonderful Cheryl Taylor who handcrafted each piece of the dress and found the most beautiful fabrics, while also including the piece my mom & I found. Cheryl was such a fun part of the process. Besides the dress, she also handmade my lace shoes & found my 100+ year old hairpiece and veil which I will cherish forever. Andrew designed my ring using his great grandmother’s diamond and a rose gold setting and paired them with two thin bands. Along with my rings, I wore small boxwood pearl earrings and a tiny bracelet I bought in Italy as my only other pieces of jewelry. I always dreamed of getting married in my parents’ backyard and I feel so blessed that everyone gave so much to make that happen. The week before the wedding, by dad surprised me with something so special to me. The ceremony structure that surrounded us as we said our vows was made by my dad with branches from a tree which used to hold our childhood tire swing before it fell the month before our wedding. Jacqueline + Trebor Rome, Italy
12-12-2013 Though Jacqueline and Trebor have known each other since middle school, there was no initial attraction. In fact, Jacqueline admits she thought of him as a jerk in high school. About four years ago however, they met again thanks to a mutual friend and this time things were much different. “I remember saying, “Trebor from high school? No way, not coming!” says Jacqueline who eventually gave in. “We snuck into a concert, had drinks, shared laughs, and of course...there was that mutual flirtation and attraction immediately. He was not the same guy from high school, thank goodness.” They quickly became great friends and had many adventures together, and in traditional Trebor style, he proposed during one of those adventures. Jacqueline says it best: He nonchalantly suggested we go to our favorite hiking spot called Max Patch. I was having a really stressful week, so I thought he was just trying to take my mind off things. Never did I suspect a proposal. He even brought along champagne, delicious cheese, raspberries....the works! Still, I just thought he was being super sweet (which he always is). We got to Max Patch about an hour before sunset. It was ab-
solutely beautiful. There are rolling hills as far as you can see, and of course the gorgeous mountains of Western North Carolina. We hiked up and found a little spot to lay our blanket down to pop open the bubbly! There weren’t a lot of people there so we had all the amazingness to ourselves. We walked around for a bit, and then all of a sudden he just gets down on one knee and proposes! Of course my jaw dropped to my knees and it took me a minute to really know what was going on. I just screamed, “YES!”...then it was like a scene from the Sound of Music. He picked me up in his arms, twirled me, the whole shebang. It was awesome. Then of course we drank lots of champagne, cuddled up, and watched the sunset...complete bliss. Their wedding ceremony seems a continuation of that dreamy day – an elopement in Rome. If eloping in Rome sounds like a dream, imagine also not having to plan a thing. Such luck was Jacqueline and Trebor’s. As Jacqueline is a model in the Ashville, NC area, she saw the Facebook post of a stylist friend that mentioned looking for an adventurous couple with passports to be a part of a photography workshop in which they would surprise the photographers with a real elopement the second day of the retreat. >> p.82

Jordan + Tay Atlanta, Georgia 03-15-2014 Though their paths must have crossed several times during their teenage and college years, it wasn’t until they both worked in Roswell, Georgia’s restaurant industry that Jordan and Tay met through a mutual friend. At first, Jordan says, “Tay wanted to be in a relationship and I wasn’t ready for one yet, so we developed as friends first. He was extremely patient with me and made me feel special for being me.” Jordan describes their first kiss as the moment things changed. Tay gave her a ride home after an evening of celebrating with her soccer teammates. While stopped at a red light, Jordan grabbed Tay’s face and gave him a huge smooch. “You do not know how long I have been waiting for you to do that,” he exclaimed, and she says she knew then how special he was. He proposed to her on Christmas Eve 2012, as they prepared to move into a town home they had just purchased. Jordan brought visiting relatives to the house for a tour. “Everyone knew what was going on except me, so they took their places in the master bedroom while my dad did his best to distract me downstairs. As we made our way up I turned the corner and Tay had painted the wall in chalk paint and written, Will You Marry Me?, with boxes to check ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ I
was immediately shocked, and of course I checked YES.” When it came to wedding inspiration, Jordan says she was able to make quick decisions, knowing she loved gold and lace with “very subtle neutral flowers - tulips are definitely a favorite - and beautiful green accents.” She gave her bridesmaids a color palette and details about fabric and length, but let them choose dresses to match their individual style. “I am a very free-spirited person so I wanted my wedding to mirror that. Tay and I really like the industrial feel as well, so when we found Summerour we immediately knew that’s where we wanted everything to take place! It was like being in a fairytale and I guess you could say that was my inspiration. The girls all looked like princesses, the guys like princes (in their navy suits), and the decor was very rustic but delicate. Feminine meets Masculine.” The wedding, on Jordan’s 29th birthday, was “the best birthday party ever!” They have kept the chalkboard wall reading “Will You Marry Me,” and their friends add messages of well-wishes when they visit. Christy + Brendan Tabernash, Colorado 10-12-2013 Despite Brendan coaching Christy’s cousins in swimming and both having attended Boston College, they didn’t meet until they both studied abroad in El Salvador. “It was an incredible place to meet,” says Christy, “the program focused on social justice and living in solidarity with the poor. Our experiences there united us in our bond for working with other cultures and for social justice.” The world is a big place, but Christy and Brendan’s story proves that when it’s meant to be, love will find you. Christy is a tough one to surprise, but after dating for eight years and living together for a few of those, Brendan pulled off a creative proposal on a regular Thursday night. “Brendan came home with sushi from our favorite restaurant. I started taking out each container and noticed one was not our usual order. Inside the take-out container was the ring and he proposed in our kitchen. We celebrated with dessert, champagne, and a weekend trip to Minnesota to be with my family. PS - Harold, our sushi guy, gave us the edamame for free that night.” They envisioned a simple, natural, and colorful affair for their wedding day celebrations and Devil’s Thumb Ranch, in Tabernash,
Colorado was the perfect place to celebrate their marriage and be with dear friends and family. This travel-loving pair included fun appetizers featuring the cuisine of places they lived abroad including pupusas from El Salvador and goat from Tanzania. Their wedding radiated with color in brilliant hues of red, fuchsia, gold, orange, peach, and blue. Because of their diverse color palette it was easy for the bridesmaids to each choose their own dress and work it right into the scheme. Nude pumps and matching ivory pashminas kept them unified. Guests were also offered a shawl at the ceremony in case they needed a bit of warmth – a lovely touch for a cool October day. There was an inch of snow on the ground in the morning, but by the afternoon it was sunny and warmer and they were able to be married outside with the gorgeous Rocky Mountains in the background. Once dancing really got started, Christy changed out of her gown and into a bright, flowy dress. “Brendan and I spent most of the later part of the night dancing and smiling to awesome live music with friends and family (this included our band playing a Led Zeppelin remix, Macklemore, and Daft Punk),” says Christy. Krissy + Sean Santa Cruz, California 10-05-2013 From the start Krissy and Sean (a family & marriage counselor and pediatric doctor respectively) knew they wanted an outdoor wedding. Being a Northern California native Krissy was in love with the idea of getting married in the redwood forest. In their search for a venue they unexpectedly stumbled across the Castle House and Gardens, the private estate of their talented florist, and knew immediately it was meant for them. The ceremony space is set in a ring of redwood trees, and surrounded by breathtaking gardens and rustic charm. “We were so sure, we actually booked it before getting the chance to tour, and when we finally did there were absolutely no regrets,” says Krissy. This little gem of a venue is tucked away up in the Bonny Doon Mountains. They knew they wanted their celebration to be rustic, authentic, intimate, and cozy. Once they found their venue the theme and details unfolded organically and they used the setting to guide many of their decisions. “The theme we used was vintage garden party, and I chose to use the décor sparingly because the location was already bursting with natural beauty. In planning the details, I was constantly searching for ways to make it a personal reflection of who we are and
where we came from. As much as possible we made use of DIY elements and vintage pieces with sentimental value,” says Krissy. Krissy designed most of the papergoods and signs herself. She also used Etsy for a number of décor items, accessories, and gifts. They planned their California wedding from Idaho, so family and friends also played a crucial part getting everything ready. “My best friend and Man of Honor went above and beyond sourcing and lending me items from his antique collection and personal succulent garden. My mother crafted the lace table runners, the flower crowns for our flower girls, and lent her entire collection of antique candleholders for the tables. We were also fortunate to have found an amazingly talented group of vendors that I felt really embraced and understood our vision early on, providing a lot of valuable advice and support along the way.” Sean surprised Krissy with a sweet gesture of reversing the “first look” and placing a string of pearls around her neck before the ceremony. Brandy + Justin Snæfellsnes, Iceland 07-15-2013 Fifteen years ago Brandy took a trip to Paris with a friend from high school who was living with Justin at the time. Though she didn’t meet him while there, when Justin saw a photograph of her from the trip he declared to their mutual friend that he would marry her someday. They met a year later when she moved back to New York from San Francisco and fell in love the moment she saw him. They both knew immediately that they had found a home with each other, and within a few months of first meeting, Justin proposed on a hot August evening atop rocks looking out over the ocean. “It was the only time I had ever seen a red moon and it was so impossibly large in the sky,” says Brandy. “Unfortunately, we were too young at the time to handle such an immense love.” The two fell apart, but somehow found their way back to each other many years later as true love is wont to do. They knew since the first moment they met, so many years before, that they wanted to be married, so a proposal was a formality they felt simply didn’t need to take place. They were planning a trip
to Iceland and at some point decided that they would get married while there. “Our only inspiration was our impossible love story, the beauty of which cannot be matched by anything, except perhaps the beauty of Iceland,” says Brandy. “There is a stillness that I feel nowhere else but with Justin, so I wanted our wedding day to reflect the same quiet, happiness and ease which I feel every moment I am lucky enough to spend with him.” They spent their day with a very small group of close family and friends in the green expanse that surrounds Hotel Budir on the westernmost tip of the Snaefellsnes peninsula, in the western region of Iceland (just a short drive from Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik). A few of Brandy’s most memorable moments? “Marrying the love of my life, in the most beautiful place on earth, surrounded by the people I love the most. And sitting in the empty dining room at the end of the night, listening to our playlist go on while admiring the otherworldly landscape and the overwhelming happiness that consumed me.”

Step 1
First, you’ll need to stamp your invitation and reply card. The invitation is stamped on an A7 card and the reply card is stamped on a 4bar card. Ink the stamp thouroughly with black pigment ink and center it over your card, press down and make sure that you gently press on all areas of the design. Step 2
Next, we’ll start on the information booklet. You can stamp this as well, or simply type up a double sided information sheet in Word or another processing program. Print it out on your home printer or have a copy shop print it for you. The cover is an 8.5”x11” sheet of patterned scrapbooking paper. Cut the cover paper and the insert paper in half, using a self healing mat, metal ruler and craft knife. The final dimension should be (5.5”x8.5”).
Step 3
Fold your patterned cover and your insert sheet in half. Crease the fold with your fingernail.

Step 4
Sew down the center of your booklet with coordinating thread. Trim the excess thread off of each side once the sewing is complete.
Step 5
Stamp your return address on both the reply envelope and the back flap of your outer envelope. It’s great to stamp the addresses because it saves your pocketbook and you’ll have the stamp to use when you send out all of your thank you notes!
Step 6
Now all that is left are the final finishing touches. We chose to address the outer envelopes to our guests in a coordinating style and black ink. We also tied the invitation suite together with gorgeous blush tailors ribbon so that each guest can unwrap their invitation like a gift. And finally, we used our most favorite current USPS postage, their vintage seed packets in the upper right hand corner. All that’s left now is to send them on their merry way!

Floral crowns are undoubtedly in style right now and add
a rustic whimsy to any celebration. Even though these are trending, I will always love them because they’re a classic accessory (people have been wearing crowns woven of flowers and vines pretty much since the beginning of time), utterly romantic, and create an instant connection to nature. Floral crowns can also help to frame your face, and
will help you to channel you inner natural godess! Make them for yourself, your bridesmaids, your flower girls etc. They’re also a fun accessory for summer festivals! All of the materials are easy to find at your local craft supply store and one crown takes about 45 minutes to make. Even less when you get the hang of it. * I used Limonium Safora, $5.99 a bunch at the grocery store typically provides more than enough for one crown, you might even be able to get two out of it.
Step 1
Divide your bunch of flowers into 3-5 little bunches and use rubber bands or floral tape to secure the ends. Hang upside down and let dry for at least 48 hours in a well ventilated area. I used alligator clips to fasten them onto a ribbon I pinned to the wall.

Step 2
Cut the bark covered wire so that it is about 18 inches in length. Clip it with floral cutters, or strong wire cutters. Then use pliers to bend each end into a long loop where you will later attach ribbons.
Step 3
Break apart the bunches of the dried flowers so that you have little bits that are easy to work with. You will use pieces that are anywhere from 6 inches to 2 inches long. I break up about as many pictured at a time and do so as I go along. The remainder look beautiful in a vase!
Step 4
Tape one end with the floral tape and make sure to get at least one wrap through the end loop. Floral tape, if you’ve never used it before, adheres as you gently stretch it. Once you’ve taped about two inches you can start taping your first little bunch of flowers, gently but tightly wrapping their stems to the wire.

Step 5
Lay over another bunch of flowers about 1-2 inches down from the first bunch depending on how close together you want them to be and tape down. Periodically clip the ends of the stems that stick out. If you don’t do this then you’ll get too many stems to tape together at once creating too thick of a base!
Step 6
Continue until you’re at the other end and finish off with floral tape wrapping it around the wire loop.
Step 7
Cut your ribbons (about 2-3 feet long depending on how you want them) and use your hot glue gun to fasten the ends to the loops by gluing a 1.5 inch section together once the ribbon has been threaded through the loop. There you go! You now have a pretty dried floral crown to wear.

worry about keeping frosting cool on a hot day. You may even want to think outside the (cake) box altogether and opt for an entirely nontraditional crepe, pancake, or cookie cake. Of course they don’t have to be entirely frosting or filling-free. Most are still layered with delicious buttercream or ganache fillings. Finished off with a minimal flourish of flowers, fruit, or powdered sugar, or even drizzled with a decadent caramel, chocolate, or honey glaze, these naked cakes are definitely on our “sweet list.” Naked cakes also have the wonderful ability to be dressed up or down. They look just as lovely left a little rough around the edges as they do trimed and neatly layered. For those who prefer a little luxury, there’s a spa on-site, and a terrace and living-room for lounging. Despite these accommodations, the literature warns that only hardy folk should make the trip. Rooms are simple but adequate, with fairly reliable hot water and internet access. Activities like surfing, biking,
