The Andhra Pradesh govt has approved the establishment of a Science City in Tirupati , it will have innovation centers, educational research institutes, and museums.

This proposed science museum transforms the ‘Tirupati in to future scientific hub’

How through architecture one can express curiosity in space?

How can public interactively engage with the process of scientific research?

Science cities are the building blocks to serve as catalyst to foster Innovation. It is a system facility that is made in order to explain the present and future science and technology to the people in a way that could be easily understandable and provide fun. It provides an experiment based learning ambiance to inculcate a spirit of inquiry, foster creative talent and create scientific temper in the community as a whole.

The museum will focus largely on astronomy, and hence the title Brahmand . State of the art science equipment is planned to be installed at the premises to enable better learning for young minds.

“ Its aim to reflect the scientific and technological advancement of human so far and motivate the upcoming bright future through an architectural milestone in urban strata. ”It is to create curiosity on different field of science and engage public interaction within the hub for interdisciplinary science and technological research”

“ Human curiosity and their ever lasting desire to explore celestial space , investigate and reach upon the unreachable, this had always been force behind every scientific discovery.

Soon Tirupati To Get Science Museum BRAHMANDA On 100 Acres

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone near SV Zoo park .Mr Naidu said the museum to be developed at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore.

“The museum will focus on large spectrum of science and hence the title BRAHMAND (i.e. celestial or universe which includes everything within itself). Each and every museum will be developed in the lines of well-renowned museums in the world SYMBOLIZING THE SEVEN HILLS OF TIRUMALA.”

Andhra Pradesh government has decided to establish a Science City a ‘mega science project in the nation’ with support from Government of India. It is to transform the ‘Tirupati in to future scientific hub’.

Project Name: Brahmanda Science Museum

Function: Hub For Interdisciplinary Research

Site: Thirupathi, Andhra Pradesh

Site Area: 100 Acres

Client: Government Of Andhra Pradesh

The total site area for the project is about 100 acres and it includes 4 programmes within it. I.e. popularizing the science program through science museum, convention center for Tirupati with capacity of 5000 which can be extended in future to 20000 and a wing for research and development and institute for research on different fields of science. It follows the building regulations according to the local law code and national NCSM.

The site is situated in the foot hills of the Thirumala. It is accessed from the main national highway NH71. The site is in the gradual slope of the mountain. It slops towards the road. The highest point of the site is 24 meter and the lowest point is 0 meter. It is in the contour interval of 4 meter. But, the slope ratio is very less because of the contour distance. The average slope ratio is 1:8.

The Aerial view above shows the entrance plaza and its connections. The buildings are arranged in such a way that the view of one building is not disturbed by another. It is placed in an angle to ensure its captures most of the northern lights and follows the passive cooling technique.

Each museum are connected to each other through plazas forming a loop.

The center of the loop becomes the landscape area with biodome and other herbal gardens. Service road runs around the site connecting the fire escape of all the museum.

This service road is just for the purpose of fire escape and transportation of heavy display. The whole site is pedestrianized in such a way that vehicular movement is restricted until the entrance plaza.

09

Connectivity of SEVEN HILLS

A Walk Through The Roof

The main idea is that the Proposed Science City should express the abstract form of the seven hills of tirumala as per requirement. The building are connected to each other .It is placed in the contour in such a way that roof becomes an active connectivity place between the buildings. All the buildings will have open plaza ground which are connected by the roof. These connectivity will creates more green space and roof becomes one.

ARTS AND SCIENCE museum

The main idea of the form is to cut off the southern race and make way for the landscape and the entry. The one side of the building is splayed with the large wall of 16m high which acts as an art display and also opens up to the landscape near. The staircase is the key element and other exhibit halls are around it. The space is organized around a large central gallery that gives museum a space for exhibitions and events

THE ARTS AND SCIENCE MUSEUM is placed as the first museum, which is accessed from the entrance plaza. It is connected through roof to the next plazas. The roof slopes down to the next level to the plaza above i.e. evolution plaza. Thus making the circulation space as the roof .

In many ways the professional course for Architecture is an intimate rite of passage- with its own unique work culture insulated from other courses by its characteristic late nights, immerse work sessions and student bonds from regular group-work. Architecture school can either make or break the student. Suffice to say, what happens in a design learning environment is serious business.

Well-designed workspaces are few and far between –designers and architects often only get a chance to mold their sacred workspace when setting up their own firm.

This competition is an opportunity to conceptualize a transformation from current workspace to dream studio, in any way you see fit.

The War Room

DESIGNING THE STUDIO

NOW OR ‘Now or Never’ presented by Vowels Consultancy & Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Is a regular design competition open to students and professionals. The theme for this ‘Now or Never’ is ‘’The War Room – Designing the Studio” (3 days)

The aim of this design problem is to empower designers to conceptually transform their own personal workspaces and studios, balancing imagination within the limits of practicality.

What if you were given a chance to redesign the workspace for you, your team of students and co-workers, so that the space in which you spend more than 8-10 hours a day becomes all the more fulfilling and fueling for your every idea?

Would you design a subtle, soothing environment with gentle inspiration, or would you construct a bold atmosphere bubbling with energy?

URBAN

This design is about studying the impact of establishment of outer ring road in chennai which has destroyed the balance of the nature and its ecosystem. This infrastructure has shattered the hydrology of this area making it one of the worst affected area in Chennai Flood 2015

. Due to this the food chain is disturbed.

The project seeks to find the balancing point between culture and nature along the Adyar river basin which is currently under appreciated because of flooding, vacancy and disconnection. The design solution is an embodiment of cultural representation and technology of storm water management in order to achieve ecological and social resilience. With potential for spontaneous use and dynamic programming, the site can transform into a sustainable infrastructure with a cultural identity that provides active waterfront experience

By studying reports about people’s view of the river, local geographic and demographic information, the concept of “cultural landscape serves as sustainable storm water management infrastructure” was formed. It reroutes and collects water and serves as a buffer between the river and the city during flooding seasons. The plan provides a refuge for wetland plant and animal species. It also creates a platform for water related recreational actives. In this way, people have the opportunity to change their perspective about the river.

Peri urban agri city
DESIGN STUDIO (sem 9)
35
The 10 days urban design studio is to discuss about the changes created by the outer ring road in its environment .The main aim of the studio is to analysis the changes created.

Peri-urban agriculture refers to production units close to town, which operate intensive semi- or fully commercial farms to grow vegetables and other crops. The emergence of peri-urban agriculture provides opportunities to improve the city’s food resilience and develop a local food system. This project will focus on creating a community farming in residential area. Promoting Urban Agriculture in the neighbourhood will establish healthy and sustainable food access to populations in needed. This will also Create Identity, Educate the City by Using cultural landscape as an opportunity to increase public awareness about the natural and cultural history of the river

How can peri-urban agriculture be integrated with peripheral urban growth?

How can a model be created for the radial transformation of an industrial agricultural system into a locally-basis sustainable system in peri urban area of Chennai?

Site chosen is the mudichur area in the Orr road stretch. This site was one which was most affected in the Chennai floods in 2015. Being a developing residential area, the Orr road has contributed to the development of the area by suppressing its food productivity.

The image above is the proposal of the community farming market in the Peri urban area of the city with green roof and plazas adjoining this becomes the community space of the area promoting healthy social interaction

The map indicates the different layers of the Orr road and its surrounding. The circled area is what was chosen for the proposal

36 37

The map above indicates the overall mudichur area at present stage it indicates various layers of the area its build form open to the close space ratio etc. . . . From the map above it clearly indicates that it is developing into the high density residential area.

The map above shows the area before the construction the Orr road from the map it is clear that the farm lands are more with less built space and more open space. The river valley is surrounded by the green spaces thus this area was less affected by the flood.

The map above indicates in future if no proper steps are taken .the river valley will be occupied by the built .the farm land will be converted to the build spaces the river and water bodies around is diminished. This will lead to severe drought in summer in extreme flood during rain.

38 39

The region is going to be the growth of residential dwelling units and this means loss of high productivity of farming. The loss of farmland will force the city to import food from regions and will lead to unaffordable food prices and scarcity of resources for Chennai. So it is imperative for proper action in both micro and macro levels. This will, not only increases the productivity of the area but also proper water management to prevent flood.

MICRO SCALE

Each house has its own green place from which they can produce for them-self and give the surplus to the community market and restaurant

Strom water drain running parallel to road collects all the rain water from the low laying areas to the main canal. This acts as a water conservation system.

The image below shows the enrichment of the ecosystem in the basin of the Adyar river .Thus by widening and proper storm water management this area has a potential to become a biodiversity hotspot.

Let it flood

The final proposal is composed with a public infrastructure of water systems that brings ecological developments and cultural activities together. Instead of treating water as a major threat to the city and avoiding it, the plan welcomes water. Seasonal flooding also naturally fertilizes soil, makes urban agricultural production easier to establish.

Let It Grow

The proposed ecological framework will adapt to the site condition over time. Bringing back wetlands that clean and improve overall water quality while providing refuge for animal species. Promoting Urban Agriculture in the neighbourhood will establish healthy and sustainable food access to populations in needed.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT HOUSING

The design is to build the international student housing center inside the campus. The requirements include studio rooms for 150 and suite room for 4 users of about 50 with all recreational facilities and series to make them functional.

The site is located on seethakathi estate, vandalur, chennai, Tamil nadu. Accessed from vandalur – kalambakam road inside the university campus. The design is to build the international student housing centre inside the campus. The main aim was to provide connectivity between the students space which can interaction between them.

In present day scenario the high rise and tall buildings are the solution to the growing requirement. But we often miss the connectivity of the nature and environment around us

THUS THIS PROJECTS IDEA IS TO CREATE GREEN VOIDS at different levels through which the interaction between the student in the hostel is made easier and also the connectivity with the surrounding and the nature is increased. THE BASIC IDEA OF MASSING is pull and push of different regions creating the projection and recessing on the elevation with different mass and voids.
