Songwriter festivals
Two of my favorite festivals return in 2018. The Key West Songwriters Festival runs May 9 - 13 and features more than 200 artists doing 50 shows over five days. This marks the 23rd year for this festival that attracts thousands to Key West to get up close and personal with national singers and songwriters. Call our friends at Key West Express ... they would love to get you there and back. Meanwhile, the dates have been announced for the fifth annual Island Hopper Songwriter Festival. The festival kicks off on Captiva Island Sept. 21 23, then moves to the Fort Myers River District Sept. 24 - 27 and wraps up on Fort Myers Beach Sept. 28 - 30.

Cabins selling fast
We just got back a couple weeks ago from the 2018 sailing of the ‘70s Rock and Romance Cruise, and organizers are already selling cabins very quickly for the 2019 installment. This year, we enjoyed five days and nights with performances by Styx, Michael McDonald, The Guess Who, America, Air Supply, Ambrosia, Poco, BJ Thomas, War, Badfinger and Atlanta Rhythm Section. The performances were fantastic, but the amazing part is when you get to interact with some of the artists through Q & As or just bumping into them on the ship. Next year, the cruise sails March 25 - 30 aboard the Celebrity Infinity from Fort Lauderdale to Cozumel and Cococay. This cruise will sell out fast, and cabin sales appear to be ahead of last year’s which sold out. The lineup so far includes Foreigner, Boz Scaggs, Little River Band, The Orchestra starring former members of ELO, Orleans, Leo Sayer, Gino Vannelli, Firefall and Exile. You can save up to $300 on your cruise cabin by using the promo code “Happenings” when you book it. We hope to see you on the next sailing of the ‘70s Rock and Romance Cruise (it’s an experience unlike any other). Rock on,

Michael Hennessey and Brandon Somers in Lab Theaterʼs Visiting Mr. Green.
LABORATORY THEATER OF FLORIDA
Visiting Mr. Green
The Laboratory Theater of Florida presents Visiting Mr. Green, opening April 13 in Fort Myers. Having almost hit 86-year-old widower Mr. Green, Ross Gardiner is charged with reckless driving. He must now complete a form of community service and visit Mr. Green every week for the next six months. Though both men are quick to resent these forced visits, their conversations soon reveal family secrets and past hardships. A story of acceptance and open-mindedness, replete with charm and poignancy. Local favorite Michael Hennessey (The Best Man), who plays Mr. Green, says "Visiting Mr. Green transcends the 'gaps' between young and old, gay and straight, parent and child, by immersing us in their one unifying common thread, love. You will love this play.” The internationally-loved play also stars Brandon Somers (Burn This) and is directed by artistic director Annette Trossbach, who selected the play for this season because of its honest, hopeful, poignant portrayal of two men who have 6 - April 2018
found themselves marginalized for different reasons and eventually find common ground and friendship. “Conservative Jewish Mr. Green doesn't want anything to do, at first, with energetic and modern Ross Gardiner. But tolerance leads to acceptance and then leads to their embracing of one another and a revaluation of who each of them are. The show is a gentle reminder that, through openness, peace and kindness are possible,” said Trossbach. Visiting Mr. Green plays April 13 to April 29 at the Laboratory Theater of Florida. Performance dates are as follows: April 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. and April 22, 28 and 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase on www.Brownpapertickets.com or by calling the box office at 239-218-0481. For more information, visit www.LaboratoryTheaterFlorida.com or the physical location at 1634 Woodford Ave. in the Fort Myers River District.

By Michael Moran An outrageous old ladies’ murder ring operates beneath the surface of the plot of Arsenic and Old Lace, bringing some twisted humor to The Cultural Park Theater. The play opens April 6 and runs through April 15. The broadly satirical comedy follows the eccentric Brewster family in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1941. Mortimer Brewster, who works at a prominent New York newspaper, visits his sweet spinster aunts to announce his engagement to Elaine Harper when his world is turned upside down. He realizes that his aunts have been poisoning lonely old men for years. He must help them bury their latest victim and protect the woman he loves from his homicidal family, all while attempting to maintain his own sanity. “It’s a play where a lot of the comedy comes from the family dynamic,” said director Christi Wengerter. “We joke about our families being crazy, but this play takes that to a whole new level.” Arsenic and Old Lace opened on Broadway in January 1941 and ran for over 1,333 performances a record for its time. Since its Broadway success, Frank Capra turned the play into a movie hit starring Carey Grant and much of the original cast. “The jokes that made audiences laugh back then still do today,” said Wengerter. Arsenic and Old Lace is a show that has stood the test of time, if audiences want to laugh with a show that has made audiences laugh for decades, this is the one to come to, and I expect they’ll have a good time. Next, get ready for Neil Simon's best known comedy, The Odd Couple, which will open April 27 and run through May 6. June Koc directs this classic comedy, so come and enjoy the two mismatched buddies, Oscar and Felix, at their best. Oscar, played by Martin Hastings and Felix, played by Roy St. Onge, are both aggressively irritating, pushing their own neuroses and obsessions out into the world, with a disregard for people around them. Their card-playing buddies add zingers and crazy comedy antics to the production. With the entrance of the Pigeon sisters, the comedy lifts to joyous heights. This production of The Odd Couple reflects more than just a barrage of one-liners or a superficial, slap-happy exercise in joke recital. Neil Simon's writing wraps all of the eight characters in a layer of humanity, enhancing the comedy by making it feel real. There is a reason that The Odd Couple is a classic -- not only is there scarcely a moment in the play that isn't hilarious, but in the usual Simon style, there are also fresh and unexpected insights into human nature. The Cultural Park Theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd. in Cape Coral. Broadway series tickets are $21 for adults, $18 for seniors, and children, students and group rates are available. Call the box office at 239-772-5862 for reservations. Michael Moran is executive director of the Cultural Park Theatre Company. Happenings Magazine

NAPLES PLAYERS
Debi Garnett and Jerry Rannow in the Naples Playersʼ production of Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo The Naples Players present Michelle Kholos Brooks and Kelly Younger’s Riva Shiner Award-winning comedy Kalamazoo, opening with a red-carpet celebration on March 28 with performances through April 22. Peg (Debi Garnett) and Irv (television comedy legend Jerry Rannow) are two quirky but endearing 70-something baby boomers, who bravely venture into the world of modern dating, but as these opposites attract, they discover love is not any easier or less wonderful the second time around. “Kalamazoo is a rich, well-played story about love at any age,” said Jessica Walck, associate artistic director of The Naples Players and director of Kalamazoo. “We are thrilled to have the perfect cast for this comedy, TNP Lifetime Member Debi Garnett and the wonderful and very funny Jerry Rannow. This comedy is one of those rare gems you will want to see again and again.” Rannow’s almost perfect comedic timing, honed by years of working with the funniest people on television, makes him a perfect match for his character Irving, an outgoing Jewish man with a great sense of humor. Rannow began his show business career with guest appearances on The Red Skelton Hour, The Jonathan Winters Show, The Carol Burnett Show, The Beverly Hillbillies, Love, American Style and My Three Sons. He made the transition to writer—producer on Welcome Back, Kotter, Happy Days, Love, American Style, Room 222, All in the Family, Love Boat, Harper Valley PTA, Eight Is Enough and Head of the Class. Jerry has won development contracts with ABC, Columbia Pictures, Warner

Brothers, Twentieth Century Fox, and the CTV Network in Canada. Jerry taught comedy writing at the University of Wisconsin, DePaul University, Carthage College and the USC Film School. He currently teaches a comedy writing and performing class at TNP with a session beginning in May. The lovable and endearing Debi Garnett returns to TNP’s stage with 22 years of experience on it making people smile. Some of Debi’s most memorable roles with TNP include Doris/Same Time, Next Year, Bananas/House of Blue Leaves, M’Lynn/Steel Magnolias, Ensemble/The Laramie Project, Amanda Wingfield/The Glass Menagerie, Madeline/The Women of Lockerbie. Rannow and Garett play the central characters in this romantic comedy. Irv (Rannow) is a proud and quirky Jewish man who has lost the love of his life, his wife Rosie, to cancer. Peg (Garnett) is a devout, Rosary-society Catholic widow with five daughters. The two opposites connect on a senior dating website and then try to navigate each-others quirky personalities and their children’s judgements. Kalamazoo is a romantic comedy about life’s second act, reminding us we are never too old to be young. Performances of Kalamazoo are in the newly renovated Tobye Studio Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for subscribers and $10 for students and educators. BIG ARTS: Dames at Sea
BIG ARTS presents Dames at Sea at the Strauss Theater on Sanibel now through April 7. In the early 1930s, a Broadway musical is in rehearsal. Mona Kent is its temperamental diva star, Joan a wise-cracking chorus girl, and Hennesy the producer/manager/director. The naive Ruby arrives from Utah, with “nothing but tap shoes in her suitcase and a prayer in her heart”, determined to be a Broadway star. She promptly faints into the arms of Dick, a sailor and aspiring songwriter. Ruby gets a job in the chorus, but Hennesy informs the cast that the theater must be torn down, and they must find another place for the show. Joan and Lucky, another sailor and her former boyfriend, renew their

romance while Ruby admits her feelings for Dick. Dick and Lucky persuade their Captain to volunteer the use of their ship. Mona recognizes the Captain as a former boyfriend. When Mona kisses Dick, to persuade him to give her one of his songs, Ruby sees and is despondent. Dick explains the misunderstanding and the couple make up. GULFSHORE PLAYHOUSE
Miss Keller Has No Second Book
Gulfshore Playhouse presents the world premiere of Miss Keller Has No Second Book showing March 31 - April 15. Directed by Emilie Beck and written by acclaimed actress and playwright Deb Hiett, Miss Keller Has No Second Book was a finalist at Gulfshore Playhouse’s fourth annual New Works Festival. In this funny and touching play, 50 years have passed since the notoriously reclusive Agnes Keller published her first and only book. In the wake of a life-changing event, Agnes’ small sanctuary is punctured by interruptions from a series of unwanted visitors. Starring Playhouse favorites Amy Van Nostrand (Agnes Keller) and Maureen Silliman (Ramona Keller), the play grapples with the inevitability of change, the tangled tethers of family, and the very big question: What does an artist owe the world? With more than 35 years of experience in theatre, film and television, Van Nostrand is a frequent actress on the Gulfshore Playhouse stage, previously starring in The Christians, The Glass Menagerie, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, and All My Sons. She made her Broadway
debut in the 1982 production of The Hothouse and has performed in regional theatres across the country, including The Guthrie Theater, Huntington Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and others. Longtime Broadway veteran, Silliman’s New York credits include Shenandoah, I Remember Mama, and Is There Life After High School. OffBroadway works include The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Marathon Dancing, Three Postcards and Reckless. Actors joining Van Nostrand and Silliman in the world premiere of Miss Keller Has No Second Book, include James Lloyd Reynolds (Darryl Wasserman) from the hit drama Homeland, Alex Grubbs (Jackson Keller) from the acclaimed New York folk band The Lobbyists and Hannah Mae Sturges (Katelyn Linden) from the short film Into the Sand. Evening shows begin at 8 p.m.; matinees begin at 3 p.m. at The Norris Center in Naples. All show tickets are $30 two hours before a performance. For tickets, visit online at www.GulfshorePlayhouse.org or contact 866-811-4111.

SW FL Symphony ends season with Bernstein
The Southwest Florida Symphony, Lee County’s only professional orchestra and one of the oldest on Florida’s Gulf Coast, concludes its 57th Masterworks season on Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Barbara B. Mann Hall at FSW with Happy Birthday Leonard Bernstein. In addition to celebrating Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday and his brand of artistic genius that catapulted symphonic music into the 20th century, it also celebrates the great music of film composer Elmer Bernstein, the “Bernstein of the West” with a performance of his Guitar Concerto, featuring one of classical guitar’s brightest stars, Pablo Sainz-Villages. Masterworks V: Happy Birthday Leonard Bernstein is conducted by the Southwest Florida Symphony’s internationally renowned music director, Maestro Nir Kabaretti. In addition to a performance of Elmer Bernstein’s Guitar Concerto featuring guest artist Pablo SainzVillages, the symphony performs Leonard Bernstein’s quintessentially American style - Three Dance Episodes from Fancy Free and
Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. Praised as “the soul of the Spanish guitar,” Pablo Sáinz Villegas has become a worldwide sensation known as this generation’s great guitarist. With his “virtuosic playing characterized by irresistible exuberance” as described by The New York Times, his interpretations conjure the passion, playfulness, and drama of his homeland’s rich musical heritage. Maestro Kabaretti offers a highly popular pre-concert lecture that takes place at 6:30 p.m. These lectures are offered in order to better educate audiences about the pieces being performed and often feature a guest artist Q & A and demonstrations. Tickets cost between $29 and $92 per person and may be purchased online at www.swflso.org, by visiting the Southwest Florida Symphony Box Office located at 8290 College Parkway, Suite 103 in Fort Myers, by calling the Symphony Box Office at (239) 418-1500 or at the door, one and a half hours prior to the concert. Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall is located at 13350 FSW Parkway in Fort Myers.
Island Hopper Songwriter Fest Sept. 21 - 30
The fifth annual Island Hopper Songwriter Fest returns Sept. 21 - 30 to fill the beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel with music and fun at a number of tropical venues. The festival will take place over 10 days on Southwest Florida’s most beautiful barrier islands and in the historic River District. It’s also a chance for fans to hear popular songs they’ve heard on country radio performed by the actual songwriters. “Island Hopper brings people closer to the music, giving visitors the chance to see and meet top songwriters in some of our destina32 - April 2018
tion’s most spectacular island settings,” said Tamara Pigott, executive director of the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau. The festival kicks off on Captiva Island Sept. 21 - 23, then moves to historic downtown Fort Myers on Sept. 24 - 27, and wraps up on Fort Myers Beach Sept. 28 - 30. The exciting lineup of festival headliners and songwriters will be announced later this year. “We’re already hard at work putting together the lineup for our fifth Island Hopper Songwriter Fest and it’s shaping up to be our
best year yet,” said Louis Kaplan, iHeartMedia, senior vice president programming. “It’s become one of the best festivals of its type in the country, so it’s exciting to find artists reaching out to participate and guests returning to enjoy the music.” Island Hopper is presented by Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau, iHeartMedia, Cat Country 107.1 and BMI, the largest music rights organization in the U.S. Happenings Magazine is again a partner with the Island Hopper Songwriter Festival. contest? It should be a memorable evening touched by the typical SW Florida sunset accompanied with distant ukulele strumming. The luau will take place Wednesday, April 11 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person and include park entrance fee plus two fruity drink coupons. FOLKS member tickets are $45 each. The Friends of Lovers Key Events Committee has long supported the state park by funding special needs and programs for the park. Now their task is slightly different. The State Legislature
has provided $4 million in funds for a new Welcome and Discovery Center building at the park. Ground breaking is scheduled for this fall. But a task still remains. The building will need exhibits, furniture, classroom equipment etc. So FOLKS has a new calling - to fund these needs. Proceeds from the luau will go toward that effort and making a long time dream become reality for the entire SW Florida community. Cary Hoffman performs My Sinatra April 17 at Shell Point
Shell Point Retirement Community closes out its showstopping 2017-2018 Performing Arts Concert Series program with My Sinatra, starring Cary Hoffman. Symphonic Mastersingers
Nadler conducts Haydn
The Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers will present two major works in concerts this April in a program called Nadler Conducts Haydn. Conductor emeritus of the Southwest Florida Symphony, Maestro Paul Nadler will lead the full Mastersingers chorus and the Mastersingers Festival Orchestra in performances on Friday, April 6 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 4544 Coronado Pkwy, Cape Coral at 7 p.m.; and on Sunday, April 8 at Moorings Presbyterian Church, 791 Harbour Drive, Naples at 4 p.m. The program will open with Haydn’s Symphony #92, known as the Oxford Symphony. The second half will feature the Mass in Time of War, with the chorus and a quartet of professional soloists joining the orchestra. Both of the Haydn masterworks date from the final years of the 18th century. Symphony #92, one of the so-called London Symphonies, was actually written in Paris several years earlier. It became known as the Oxford Symphony when Haydn conducted an acclaimed performance of it upon receiving an honorary doctorate from Oxford University. Scholars have said that the piece “defines the Classical era”. The Mass in Time of War was composed in 1796, as Austria was mired in an ongoing war
with Napoleon’s France. It is also called Paukenmesse (Kettledrum Mass) because of its extensive use of timpani throughout. In this magnificent piece Haydn uses the timpani to great effect, as in the Agnus Dei, where the drums mimic the sound of far-off canons before the words Dona Nobis Pacem, grant us peace, close the work. The piece is symphonic in scope and provides opportunities for chorus and soloists to shine. Soprano Karin White, who performed with the Mastersingers last spring in the premiere of Dr. Jason Bahr’s Symphony No. 2, returns to sing the technically challenging solos in this piece. She will be joined by Tenor Matt Morgan and Bass Ed Pember. “We are thrilled to have such a talented musician as Maestro Nadler join us for these concerts,” said Mastersingers artistic director Jeff Faux. “Paul will be conducting a performance of Elektra at the Met in late March, and then rushing down here to do the Haydn with our group.” He continued, “it’s a rare opportunity for our audience and our singers to be able to experience such a world-renowned conductor.” Tickets are $25 for either performance, with a special $15 ticket for students and are available on the Mastersingers website at www.mastersingersfm.com.

SAM GALLOWAY CONCERT SERIES
The Outlaws, Joe Diffie and Tracy Lawrence at The Ranch
The Sam Galloway Concert Series in conjunction with Gator Country 101.9 is bringing more national artists to The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers this spring. The Outlaws are scheduled to perform April 5 at The Ranch. For The Outlaws, it was always about the music. For 40 years, the Southern Rock legends celebrated triumphs, endured tragedies and survived legal nightmares to remain one of the most influential and best-loved bands of the genre. Now The Outlaws return with new music, new focus and an uncompromising new mission: It’s about a band of brothers bound together by history, harmony and the road. It’s about a group that respects its own legacy while refusing to be defined by its past. But most of all, it’s about pride. It’s About Pride is the new album from The Outlaws, a record four years in the making and perhaps 20 or more in the waiting. And for original Outlaws vocalist/guitarist Henry Paul, it’s a hard-fought revival whose success can be measured in old fans and new music. “Because The Outlaws have been out of the public eye for so long, it’s almost like starting over,” he explains. “But because of the band’s history, we’re seeing this as a new chapter. We’ve written and recorded this album on our own terms, and we’re out to make a significant impression. What our fans loved then they still love now, but most of all, they recognize the heart and sincerity we put in our music.” For cofounding drummer Monte Yoho, the journey is both bittersweet and jubilant. “I still think about the friends we made when we first came into this industry, how we struggled to define this thing that became known as ‘Southern Rock’,” Yoho says. “This new album embodies all the things we shared musically and personally, as well as the relationships we have with our fans to this day. It’s about where we’ve been, where we’re going, and why we still love to do this.” Joe Diffie will be at The Ranch April 13. With the release of Jason Aldean’s hit “1994” in 2013 that name-checked many of Joe Diffie’s twelve Number One hits, the legendary singer found himself squarely back in the hearts and minds of country fans. The multi-platinum-selling artist who dominated the charts during a hot streak in the ‘90s may have been absent from the radio charts for the past few years, but Joe-Joe-Joe Diffie has never slowed down – writing, touring and recording a myriad of projects including his critically acclaimed 2010 bluegrass album “Homecoming,” and his “Roots And Boots” acoustic tour and collaborative CD “All In The Same Boat,” with fellow hitmakers Sammy Kershaw and Aaron Tippin. And now he’s back at it again, riding shotgun with hick-hop sensations the Jawga Boyz on the single, “Girl Ridin’ Shotgun.” Other upcoming shows in the Sam Galloway Concert Series include High Valley on April 7, Tracy Lawrence on April 21, Colt Ford on April 27, Whiskey Myers on May 12, Billy Currington on May 25 and Joe Nichols on June 12. Tedeschi Trucks Band at Mann Hall April 12
Tedeschi Trucks Band will perform at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW on Thursday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. Now in their eighth year, Grammywinning Tedeschi Trucks Band has earned their reputation as one of the premier live acts touring today. The 12-piece ensemble, led by the husband-and-wife team of guitarist Derek Trucks and guitarist-singer Susan Tedeschi, is a true collective; a rarity in rock-and-roll with every musician featured nightly while serving the band’s unified vision, pushing the boundaries of group dynamics and improvisation to inspiring new heights. Their latest release, Live From the Fox Oakland, (2017) – a CD and film – was recorded in a single night at a show that fans and band members all regard as one of their finest performances to date. The double
disc live recording showcases the band’s ability to move seamlessly from blistering rock and blues to soulful ballads and includes their take on classics from Derek and the Dominos, Leonard Cohen, and even Miles Davis among TTB’s original songs. Live From the Fox Oakland, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Blues and #6 on the Rock Albums chart, follows four critically-hailed and commercially successful TTB albums, including their Grammy-winning inaugural studio effort Revelator (2011), and 2016’s Let Me Get By, the first to be solely produced by Trucks and written in house in the TTB family and called by the Associated Press “one of the great records of the year.” Tickets are available at the Fort Myers box office, online at www.bbmannpah.com or call 239-481-4849.

Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse
With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.
