Andorra LABORATORY THEATER OF FLORIDA

THEATRE

In honor of Holocaust remembrance month, The Laboratory Theater of Florida presents the Southwest Florida premiere of Andorra by Max Frisch opening March 29 and running through April 14. Artistic director Annette Trossbach says, “The citizens of Andorra don't come bearing tiki torches, swastikas, or burning crosses or wearing white hoods. They are not war criminals. They are everyday citizens that are complicit through neglect, ignorance, and casual racism and prejudice; in their selfishness and intolerance, they are barely aware of how they have treated Andre … except Andre's father, who, in his cowardice, set the entire story into motion.” One of the most oft-produced plays in Europe, this parable about racism and prejudice is a great example of epic-theater. Set in fictionalized Andorra, Andre is adopted by a teacher and raised as a Jew. Throughout the play, Andre is faced with outright prejudice and complicit silence from his fellow townspeople. Frisch's message is loud and clear: prejudice happens in every country, both in the past and the present, and we must learn to accept everyone's differences if

THEATRE

Cultural Park Theater wraps up

Broadway season with hit songs and laughter

By Michael Moran Broken Hearts is a musical revue based on our Jersey Girls and Brooklyn Boys revues. The show brings a classic collection of top hits from the 1950s and 60s to the Cultural Park Theater. This show takes you back to the decade when rock and roll was king, music was played on 45s and teenagers danced with American Bandstand. From Buddy Holly to Elvis to The Drifters and many more, the musical hits of the 1950s are favorites among all generations. Songs includes such favorites such as "At the Hop," "Rock Around the Clock" and "Jailhouse Rock" as well as the romantic hits "Unchained Melody" and "The Great Pretender.” This high energy, foot-tapping showcase of the rock and roll’s glory days will be performed Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday matinees from April 5 through April 14. Join us for what I am sure will be a night out no one will want to miss. And now the part of our concert season I have waited for all year takes the stage for four performances April 19 through April 21.

Note, we have added an extra Saturday matinee to this show just to make room so everyone can catch this incredible performance. Since 2013, Peter J. Fogel has been the national touring star of the hit comedy, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy! And now he brings to the Cultural Park stage, his hilarious autobiographical tale… Til Death Do Us Part… You First! True Confessions about Marriage, Sex, & other things that end prematurely (directed by Chazz Palminteri). Eternal bachelor Peter Fogel has major commitment issues as the love of his life has just broken up with him on Valentine’s Day. He senses his own mortality and after much soul searching decides to revisit the scene of all his romantic disasters. Fogel mixes his signature wit along with riotous relatable characters and takes us on a whirlwind comedic journey of searching for your soulmate and the meaning of a real commitment. Young or old, divorced or married… if you’ve even been single (and that’s everyone) … and want to experience (again) the feeling of finding that Special Person to spend the rest of your life with — then you’ll want to fasten your seat belt for 75 minutes of Non-Stop laughs with Peter Fogel’s ‘Til Death Do Us

Part … You First. Finally, the madcap comedy, Lend Me A Tenor, has enough screwball humor to have earned it three Tony awards and passionate audiences. The story revolves around the Cleveland Grand Opera Company as it gets ready to welcome the greatest tenor in the world for a one-night performance of Otello. When the star passes out, another character gets into the Otello costume to fool the audience and save the show. Two Otellos end up running around the stage in costume while two women run around in lingerie, each thinking she is with the real opera star. Written by Ken Ludwig, this show is a remarkable piece of theatre" Personally, I think farce is by far my favorite style of theater, I think it takes something very special to be able to pull it off. Lend Me A Tenor will hit the Cultural Park stage on April 26 with performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday through May 5. Contact the box office for tickets at 239772-5862. Tickets for Broadway Season shows are $21 for adults, $18 for seniors, with student and group rates available. All concert season tickets are $21. Cultural Park Theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd., Cape Coral. Michael Moran is the executive director of the Cultural Park Theatre Company

THE CHARLOTTE PLAYERS

‘Sex’ on stage at Langdon Playhouse Charlotte Players is not handing out Claritin this allergy season, but there will be a different kind of pill on stage at the Langdon Playhouse. In Sex Please, We’re 60, a medication mix-up figures prominently at Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast. Successful for many years, Mrs. Stancliffe annually entertains a familiar group of guests (nearly all women). Her next door neighbor, the elderly, silver-tongued, Bud “Bud the Stud” Davis believes they come to spend time with him in romantic liaisons, which the prim and proper Mrs. Stancliffe steadfastly denies. Meanwhile, her other neighbor and would-be suitor, Henry Mitchell, is a retired chemist who has developed a blue pill called “Venusia” to increase the libido of menopausal women. When the untested pill is mixed up with Bud’s Viagra, strange things happen as the bawdy, rollicking romp begins. Director Jessie Reter-Choate is bringing Sex Please, We’re 60 to the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte for an April 11 - 28 run. Broadway World calls the play “a saucy, senior scandal.” Playwrights Michael and Susan Parker found their niche writing plays 14 - April 2019

placing familiar British farce situations in an American setting. Their plays are stereotypical sex comedies, with nonsensical plots and suggestive names, like “The Sensuous Senator,” “There’s a Burglar in the My Bed,” and “Whose Wives are They Anyway.” The result, in every case, is a good deal of fun. Tickets are $20 and may be ordered at www.charlotteplayers.org or by calling 941-255-1022 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Earlier in the month, the Players’ traveling troupe will entertain at a Murder Mystery Dinner presented by the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce at La Fiorentina Steakhouse Italiana. Held on Thursday, April 4, the event is billed as “a clever concoction of chaos, crime and cocktails.” Guests are invited to help solve the “Romanian Uranium Mystery.” A Romanian count is “missing,” the third victim of scam involving a uranium mine in New Mexico. Tickets are $60 per person, including tax and gratuity, and may be purchased through the chamber at 941-639-3720 or reception@puntagorda-chamber.com. La Fiorentina is at 10361 Tamiami Trail, Punta Gorda. Happenings Magazine

Life is a Dream THEATRE

BOWER SCHOOL OF MUSIC & THE ARTS

on stage April 5-14 at FGCU

The Bower School of Music & the Arts at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Theatre Program will present Life is a Dream by Calderón de la Barca and directed by theatre professor Barry Cavin in TheatreLab in the Arts Complex at FGCU from April 5 - 14. In the year 1635, one of history’s greatest playwrights pens a drama filled with passion for revenge, passion for honor, and passion for duty defined by love. More than that, Calderon writes a story that questions the very nature of reality and the roles we play as we seek to exert our influence upon the uncer-

tain world around us. Our contemporary production of this Spanish Golden Age classic is as fresh and pertinent as the day of its conception. Performances will be April 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and April 7, 13 and 14 at 2 p.m. There will also be a discussion with the cast and crew following the 2 p.m. performance on April 13. Tickets for this event are $10 for the general public and $7 for students and are available for purchase online at www.fgcu.edu/CAS/BSMA, or at the door.

Florida Rep to close its season with Native Gardens in ArtStage Studio

Florida Repertory Theatre announces the opening of Native Gardens, playing April 5 to May 19 in the ArtStage Studio Theatre. The discounted previews are April 2 - 4 and are nearly sold out. One of the hottest new plays in America right now, Native Gardens is a brand-new hot-button comedy that pits neighbor against neighbor. When rising career professionals, Pablo and Tania, move in next door to deep-rooted D.C. socialites, Frank and Virginia, they try their best to be welcoming. However, when a questionable fence line threatens Frank’s prizewinning orchids, the gardening gloves come off and civility turns into a backyard turf war! “This backyard comedy is 16 - April 2019

sure to resonate with our Florida Rep audiences,” said Florida Rep artistic director Greg Longenhagen. “The play delivers funny, timely, and madcap characters whose behavior harkens back to the era of the great American sitcom by delivering a pinch of pathos before it’s all over.” Native Gardens stars ensemble member V. Craig Heidenreich and Carol Halstead (Florida Rep debut) as Frank and Virginia Butley, and Anthony Martinez (Florida Rep debut) and Jennifer Paredes (Florida Rep debut) as Pablo and Tania. The cast also includes Alberto Gayoso (Florida Rep debut), Isaella Cintron (Doublewide) and Chance Cintron (Florida Rep’s conservatory) who function as a landscaping crew

hired to work in the adjoining backyards. Stefan P. Novinski makes his Florida Rep mainstage directorial debut with Native Gardens after directing a reading in the theatre’s PlayLab Festival in 2017. Novinski is joined by ensemble set designer Ray Recht (Sylvia), costume designer Dina Perez (Too Marvelous for Words), lighting designer Eli Carnahan (Florida Rep debut), sound designer Katie Lowe (Damascus) and ensemble stage manager Amy Massari (Tenderly”). You’ll meet the hilarious lead clerk who always brings sunshine to the day with humor, the couple who work in the collection area who discover that you can find love later in life, the young mother and new shop manager trying to start over, and more. As the seasons change, so does the loveable, yet quirky, group. And when the thrift shop is threatened to be sold by the greedy landlord, the team won’t stand for it. See how they band together to save the shop and in the process, discover it’s not just old treasures that are getting second chances. Performances are Wednesday through Sunday evenings with select matinees. Tickets are $45 to $70 with group prices

available. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling (239) 278-4422, visiting www.BroadwayPalm.com or in person at 1380 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

SIDNEY & BERNE DAVIS ART CENTER

Richard Tsao fashion exhibit International fashion comes to the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in Richard Tsao’s “Accidental Designer.” This exhibition will features decades of Tsao’s most influential fashion designs. Experience works that have been revered by the New York Times and the MoMa on Friday, April 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. during Art Walk. Tsao’s fashion designs are inspired by the beauty of hand-woven, iridescent Thai silk and he employs their magnificent colors in his creations to illuminate the wearer. His classic timeless designs, are infused with elements of traditional Southeast Asian mixed with fun MOD elements. His signature “cocoon” jackets are handcrafted from 7 yards of handwoven silk and shirred into smart, sleek, jacket sheaths that mold the shape of the body. Because of Tsao’s love and fascination for the handmade since childhood, his designs are exquisitely crafted in Thailand, with special attention to details. Richard Tsao was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, and is of Chinese heritage. Since art school, Tsao dedicated him-

self to his painting and in time became recognized for the raw beauty of his signature process-based paintings of radiant monochrome tableaux. The power of intense, vibrant and nuanced color is at the heart of Tsao’s talent as both an artist and a designer. Tsao’s most influential modern art works were created through a process directed by the artist that mimics nature’s passage and its encounters with the unexpected along the way. In Tsao’s custom designed Flood Room, or painting studio, he created a space that combined the elements of water, movement and heat. After slowly becoming established as an artist, he launched a parallel career in the late 1990s as a designer of women’s apparel, creating jewel-toned jackets inspired by the rich palette of hand woven Thai silk. This exhibit closes April 23. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District. AMERICANA COMMUNITY MUSIC ASSOCIATION

Sharon Goldman, 8 Ball Aitken, Jefferson Ross The season is still going strong at the Americana Community Music Association. The ACMA has six shows in four locations in April. The ACMA rents the All Faiths Congregation on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers for its touring artists shows. Each show has a local songwriter open for the headliner. The ACMA also hosts very popular free concerts in three more locations that present three local songwriters in a round robin format.

fails to entertain with his warm whiskey voice and extraordinary finger picking. Join us for a wonderful evening. Ray Cerbone opens for Jefferson Ross. He plays mostly fingerstyle guitar. With his original songs, Ray’s music crosses several genres from storyteller ballads to folk, and country based fun songs to blues. Ray is also the lead singer for the nationally touring band, The Apocalypse Blues Revue.

Shows located at All Faiths

The ACMA welcomes Sharon Goldman on April 6. Sharon is a New Jersey-based singer-songwriter whose "intense, insightful, vivid" storytelling is a "clinic in how to paint an indelible picture with the simplest images and symbols," says Alan Young, New York Music Daily. Over several well-received albums released over the past decade, she has combined heartfelt portraits and memorable lyrics with unforgettable melodies and expressive vocals — taking a folk/pop sensibility to new artistic heights. She performs regularly at house concerts, folk coffeehouses, festivals, arts and cultural venues and community centers. Sharon was honored with a showcase spot at the 2017 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance conference; a finalist spot at the 2017 South Florida Folk Festival songwriting competition and three Honorable Mentions at the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest. Chuck Williams will open for her. He has been appearing throughout New England and in recent years has gone coast to coast with his music. He has been traveling to coffeehouses, performing arts centers and festivals sowing seeds of his songs along the way. Chuck has mastered is how to pull at Americana heartstrings and tell rootsy stories through his simple and effective novella type lyrics. Chuck has a personable singing style and it's not done to impress but express. 8 Ball Aitken comes to Fort Myers on April 13. Australian slide-guitarist and songwriter 8 Ball Aitken has spent more than a decade on the road playing 200+ shows each year worldwide. He tours either with his band, or as a one-man-show. 8 Ball's 2018 album release 42 - April 2019

His songs reflect the regional influences from all of the parts of the country that he has lived from New Jersey to the West Coast o the Midwest and now Southwest Florida, His songs feature catchy tunes and lyrics and audience members can often be seen dancing and swaying and singing along while he performs. Bob Williams’ original songs and the stories behind his songs always brings a smile as a teenager Bob began writing his own music. Pulling elements from folk rock and country rock, Bob created a sound all of his own. Bob's songs are personal. Irreverent. Funny. Sad. And most importantly, true to his heart. Bob performs regularly solo and with the Pearl Street Band. Bob has released his second album, Ain’t Sorry Yet. Stanton, a professor at the University of Iowa, set the music for this composition to a Sara Teasdale poem. This concert marks not only

the completion of the group’s 18th season, but also, the end of Jeff Faux’s nine-year run as artistic director. We have produced concerts with music that has never been performed in Southwest Florida, and we have given singers of all ages the opportunity to sing in a high-quality community-based ensemble.” While Faux is directing his final domestic concert as artistic director, he will lead the group in singing the same pieces in Paris in June of 2019. The touring Mastersingers along with members of Faux’s church choir from First Presbyterian Church of Bonita will perform at L'église de la Madeleine, the very church that employed Gabriel Faure when he composed the Requiem. Marcus Roberts Trio wraps up Jazzy Nights on April 19

Marcus Roberts Trio

World-renowned contemporary jazz musicians the Marcus Roberts Trio showcase their swinging sound and vibrant jazz piano on Friday, April 19. Take part in the final Jazzy Nights concert of the season featuring the genius of modern piano. The Marcus Roberts Trio is known for its virtuosic style and entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. While most jazz trios have the piano front and center, all members of the Marcus Roberts Trio share equally in shaping the direction of the music by changing its tempo, mood, texture, or form at any time. And they do this with lightning quick musical reflexes and creative imaginations. The trio is known for having almost telepathic communication on the stage. The Marcus Roberts Trio is a longterm musical partnership between pianist

Marcus Roberts, drummer Jason Marsalis, and bassist Rodney Jordan. One of the most enjoyable aspects of watching this trio perform is that it is so evident that these three musicians are really having fun playing together and listening to each other. Pianist/composer Marcus Roberts has been hailed “the genius of the modern piano”. Marcus Roberts has won numerous awards and competitions over the years, but the one that is most personally meaningful to him is the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement. Cocktails start at 7 p.m., and the music begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40 in advance. John Michael Montgomery, Craig Campbell at The Ranch

The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers continues its full schedule of concerts in the coming months. Tracy Byrd performs March 30 as part of the Sam Galloway Ford Concert Series. Tracy Byrd became a household name on the country music scene in 1993 when his third single, called “Holdin’ Heaven,” off of his MCA Records, self-titled debut album, hit #1 on the Billboard country charts. The album also included the remake hit of Johnny Paycheck’s “Someone to Give my Love to” cementing Byrd as a traditional country troubadour. The debut album went on to be certified gold, a reward signifying sales in excess of 500,000 copies. John Michael Montgomery will play April 5 as part of the Sam Galloway Concert Series. John Michael Montgomery has turned an uncanny ability to relate to fans into one of country music’s most storied careers. Behind the string of hit records, the roomful of awards and the critical and fan accolades that have defined his phenomenal success lies a connection that goes beyond his undeniable talent and his

John Michael Montgomery - April 5 proven knack for picking hits. The Sam Galloway Concert Series presents Craig Campbell May 4 at The Ranch. In a day and age defined by instant gratification, it can be hard to remember that good things come to those who wait. But not for Wheelhouse Records singer-songwriter Craig Campbell. Long praised as a modern link to the traditional values of Country’s past, Campbell’s been waiting to release a new collection of music for five long years – and now that wait is finally over. Dylan Scott’s performance on May 11 is also part of the Sam Galloway Ford Concert Series. With his romantic, platinum certified #1 hit “My Girl,” and gold certified Top 5 smash “Hooked,” Scott has certainly done that, paying his dues and transforming real-life experience into chart-topping success. Now with the album Dylan Scott Deluxe Edition, a new chapter begins. The Sam Galloway Concert Series

welcomes Colt Ford back to The Ranch on May 17. The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. Other shows on the concert schedule at The Ranch include Pop Evil on April 14, Everlast on April 27, Doug Stone & Friends Unplugged on May 3, The Original Wailers on May 23 and Citizen Cope on June 27. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. For most concerts, the doors open at 7 p.m. at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon, 2158 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

The Lee County Library has joined with the ACMA to offer free acoustic concerts of all original music. Concerts will take place in the amphitheater, which is located on South Cornog Plaza. Bring a chair or a blanket, shows will be moved indoors depending on weather. If needed the show will be indoor in the South Building that is attached to Talking Books Library. The address is 1651 Lee St., next to the Second Street Parking lot. Come hear great original music and the stories behind the songs in an intimate songwriters showcase. Be prepared to enjoy an evening of professional quality acoustic Americana music. Chuck Williams has been appearing throughout New England and in recent years has gone coast to coast with his music. He has been traveling to coffee houses, performing arts centers and festivals sowing seeds of his songs along the way. Chuck has mastered is how to pull at Americana heartstrings and tell rootsy stories through his simple and effective novella type lyrics. Chuck has a personable singing style and it's not done to impress but express. 54 - April 2019

David Hintz has been performing and writing songs since the mid 1960s. For reasons he will never quite understand, he put away pen and guitar for many years until the early 21st century. So after a 25 year hiatus David was coerced into going to an open mic in Fort Myers. Scared to death and being extremely shy he performed a few of his original songs and the world hasn’t been the same since. His songs are about love found and lost, divorce, peace, politics, religion, equality and rebirth. David writes and performs straight from the heart. Whatever the song topic the message is never sugar coated. He is always working on new material and is currently working on a new collection of original music. Ross Jordon has been writing songs since he picked up a guitar at age 10. He went on to study music and classical guitar at Rutgers University. His songs reflect the regional influences from all of the parts of the country that he has lived from New Jersey to the West Coast to the Midwest and now Southwest Florida, His songs feature catchy tunes and lyrics and audience members can often be seen dancing and swaying and singing along while he performs. Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse

With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.
