Publisher’s Spotlight Winding down
Theatre season is going strong right now but will be winding down as the month goes along. Many of our local theatre companies will be producing their final shows of the season in April, while we do have a handful who keep the stage lights burning year round. The Laboratory Theater of Florida presents Andorra on its Fort Myers stage March 29 through April 14. Second Chances the Thrift Shop Musical opens April 4 at the Broadway Palm in Fort Myers and plays through May 12. In Naples, Gulfshore Playhouse gives us Holmes & Watson now through April 20 at The Norris Center. Florida Repertory Theatre in downtown Fort Myers has extended the run of Million Dollar Quartet to April 21. The Naples Players production of Guys and Dolls will continue its run at the Sugden Theatre in Naples through April 7 in Blackburn Hall. Meanwhile in the Tobye Studio, the Naples Players present Always a Bridesmaid March 27 through April 20. At Florida Gulf Coast University, Life is a Dream will be staged April 5 - 14 at the TheatreLab in the Arts Complex. The national tour of Disney’s The Lion King returns to the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers for a three-week run April 3 - 21. In Naples, TheatreZone wraps up its season with And the World Goes Round playing April 25 through May 5. Cultural Park Theater in Cape Coral has an active calendar again in April. Broken Hearts (a musical revue) will be performed April 5 - 14. Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor will then be on stage April 26 through May 5. The Charlotte Players present Sex Please, We’re 60 at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte April 11 28. Native Gardens opens April 5 at Florida Repertory Theatre’s ArtStage Studio Theatre in Fort Myers. The show has been extended and will play through May 19. In the Off Broadway Palm Theatre, Mama Won’t Fly is on stage now through April 28.

Anniversary, celebration
Hard to believe, but it has been 10 years since Mercato opened in Naples. Mercato will host a big celebration throughout the month of April. Additionally, our friends at Bell Tower in Fort Myers are unveiling their total redesign. The public is invited to meet the new Bell Tower on April 13 for FestiBell. Congratulations to both shopping destinations on their achievements.

Great concerts
We have a tremendous amount of choices to catch national acts as they bring their tours to Southwest Florida. At The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers, the music schedule includes Collie Buddz, Tracy Byrd, John Michael Montgomery, Pop Evil, Everlast, Doug Stone, Craig Campbell, Dylan Scott, Colt Ford, The Original Wailers and Citizen Cope. Andorra LABORATORY THEATER OF FLORIDA

In honor of Holocaust remembrance month, The Laboratory Theater of Florida presents the Southwest Florida premiere of Andorra by Max Frisch opening March 29 and running through April 14. Artistic director Annette Trossbach says, “The citizens of Andorra don't come bearing tiki torches, swastikas, or burning crosses or wearing white hoods. They are not war criminals. They are everyday citizens that are complicit through neglect, ignorance, and casual racism and prejudice; in their selfishness and intolerance, they are barely aware of how they have treated Andre … except Andre's father, who, in his cowardice, set the entire story into motion.” One of the most oft-produced plays in Europe, this parable about racism and prejudice is a great example of epic-theater. Set in fictionalized Andorra, Andre is adopted by a teacher and raised as a Jew. Throughout the play, Andre is faced with outright prejudice and complicit silence from his fellow townspeople. Frisch's message is loud and clear: prejudice happens in every country, both in the past and the present, and we must learn to accept everyone's differences if

we are to lead happy, productive lives. The Laboratory Theater has new seating: Rows A, B, and C are on the floor; Rows D and above are on risers. The Naples Players announce the cast for the upcoming classic musical production, Guys & Dolls, which runs now through April 7 in Blackburn Hall at The Naples Players Sugden Theatre. The artistic duet that led the creative and musical direction behind TNP’s sell-out productions, Chicago and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, are leading the charge once again on Guys & Dolls. Naples favorite Dawn Lebrecht Fornara is directing/choreographing and paired with the masterful musical direction of Charles Fornara. Mystery takes the stage at Gulfshore Playhouse in Naples with its latest production Holmes and Watson. Filled with frauds, fakes and charlatans all claiming to be the real Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson is on a mission to solve the mystery of the “real Sherlock Holmes.” Packed with twists and turns, the adventure plays now through April 20. Broadway season with hit songs and laughter
By Michael Moran Broken Hearts is a musical revue based on our Jersey Girls and Brooklyn Boys revues. The show brings a classic collection of top hits from the 1950s and 60s to the Cultural Park Theater. This show takes you back to the decade when rock and roll was king, music was played on 45s and teenagers danced with American Bandstand. From Buddy Holly to Elvis to The Drifters and many more, the musical hits of the 1950s are favorites among all generations. Songs includes such favorites such as "At the Hop," "Rock Around the Clock" and "Jailhouse Rock" as well as the romantic hits "Unchained Melody" and "The Great Pretender.” This high energy, foot-tapping showcase of the rock and roll’s glory days will be performed Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday matinees from April 5 through April 14. ‘Sex’ on stage at Langdon Playhouse Charlotte Players is not handing out Claritin this allergy season, but there will be a different kind of pill on stage at the Langdon Playhouse. In Sex Please, We’re 60, a medication mix-up figures prominently at Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast. Successful for many years, Mrs. Stancliffe annually entertains a familiar group of guests (nearly all women). Her next door neighbor, the elderly, silver-tongued, Bud “Bud the Stud” Davis believes they come to spend time with him in romantic liaisons, which the prim and proper Mrs. Stancliffe steadfastly denies. Meanwhile, her other neighbor and would-be suitor, Henry Mitchell, is a retired chemist who has developed a blue pill called “Venusia” to increase the libido of menopausal women. When the untested pill is mixed up with Bud’s Viagra, strange things happen as the bawdy, rollicking romp begins. Director Jessie Reter-Choate is bringing Sex Please, We’re 60 to the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte for an April 11 - 28 run. In the year 1635, one of history’s greatest playwrights pens a drama filled with passion for revenge, passion for honor, and passion for duty defined by love. More than that, Calderon writes a story that questions the very nature of reality and the roles we play as we seek to exert our influence upon the uncer-

Joe LeMay, Jeff Kriberscheck at ACT Gallery
Arts for ACT Gallery will feature Cape Coral artist Joe LeMay in the main gallery and artist Jeff Kriberscheck in the White Gallery in April. An opening reception will be held Friday, April 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. during the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. After graduating in 2007 from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Joe LeMay returned to Fort Myers and began working in freelance illustration. Although, his gallery work draws upon his background in illustration, it branches out into several different styles and techniques. Recent work is inspired by the love of travel that Joe and his wife Meagan share. The pieces are inspired by the sites, wildlife and

architecture encountered in journeys around the world. The resulting artwork is derived from a combination of photography and painting that are interwoven to convey the story of these journeys. Joe is currently living and working in Cape Coral. A graduate of Ringling School of Art & Design and Tampa Technical Institute, Jeff Kriberscheck began his career as a graphic designer for Gulfshore Life magazine. Working his way up to advertising art director, Jeff created award-winning features and advertising layouts for some of the publications most prestigious clients. Leaving the publication in 2002, he set out on his own as a freelance graphic designer and over the course of 13 years created logos, illustrations and advertising layouts for various businesses and publications. In 2006, Jeff illustrated his first children's book The Great Monkey Adventure by author Erin Rabon. The second children's book A Rainy Day Tale was published in 2010, this time with Jeff taking the reins as author and illustrator. In 2015, Jeff illustrated his third children's book Furry Oscar Finds a Home

The latest exhibit in the Cape Coral Public Library art gallery will run now through May 5. The library is located at 921 SW 39th Terrace. The shows are organized by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library. The Art Quilters Unlimited exhibit on the walls of the gallery consists of two separate themes. The first part is titled “Reflections on Hurricane Irma” and features the work of a dozen artists, who each created a piece of art that utilized torn pool cage screening and that
reflected their own experience during the devastating storm of September 2017. The second part of the exhibit, called “Resist: Interpretations and Techniques,” includes artwork by members of the guild who use “resist” techniques, a fiber arts term that refers to various methods of creating pattern on fabric or yarn. Fused glass by June F. Bennett will be featured in the display cases in the library gallery. Judy Van Inwegen’s fused glass will also be on display in the gallery cases.

The Naples Art Association named the 2019 Naples National Art Show awards recipients in late February. Best oof Show and $2,000 prize was awardede to artist Merab Gagiladze. The Best 2D and $500 prize went to Stacy Barter. The Best 3D and $500 prize was presented to Kimberly Willcox. Awards of Distinction 2D and $200 were awarded to each of the following artists: Joseph Barron, Bonny Hawley, Ronna Katz, Carmen Lagos and Steve Wewerka. Awards of Distinction 3D and $200 were awarded to each of the following artists: Steven Kolodny, Derrick Crossland, Galina Lambert, Gail Markiewicz and Debra Steidel. The Naples National Art Show is held each year in scenic Cambier Park and along 8th Street South in downtown Naples. Because of its national ranking and the beautiful weather in southwest Florida during this time of year, the Naples National is a juried art show that draws 190 of the finest artists in the country who apply in 18 categories including painting, jewelry, watercolor, ceramics, metal, sculpture, and wood and over 20,000 attendees. The Naples Art Association is thrilled to announce that solo saxophonist Jim Blackburn; Father Al & The Jazz Congregation; and pianist Tony Oberto are scheduled to perform at its upcoming For the Love of Art event – A 65th Anniversary Celebration – scheduled for Saturday, April 6 beginning at 7 p.m. at the NAA, located at 585 Park St. in Naples. “With this year’s For the Love of Art also serving as our 65th Anniversary Party, the entertainment and overall atmosphere will be even more decadent and energetic than ever before,” said Aimee Schlehr, NAA CEO and executive director. “We invite everyone in the community to join us to celebrate the history of the NAA and its anticipated, colorful future.” For the Love of Art attendees will be invited to get dolled up in

Richard Tsao fashion exhibit International fashion comes to the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in Richard Tsao’s “Accidental Designer.” This exhibition will features decades of Tsao’s most influential fashion designs. Experience works that have been revered by the New York Times and the MoMa on Friday, April 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. during Art Walk. Tsao’s fashion designs are inspired by the beauty of hand-woven, iridescent Thai silk and he employs their magnificent colors in his creations to illuminate the wearer. His classic timeless designs, are infused with elements of traditional Southeast Asian mixed with fun MOD elements. His signature “cocoon” jackets are handcrafted from 7 yards of handwoven silk and shirred into smart, sleek, jacket sheaths that mold the shape of the body. Because of Tsao’s love and fascination for the handmade since childhood, his designs are exquisitely crafted in Thailand, with special attention to details. Richard Tsao was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, and is of Chinese heritage. Since art school, Tsao dedicated him-
self to his painting and in time became recognized for the raw beauty of his signature process-based paintings of radiant monochrome tableaux. The power of intense, vibrant and nuanced color is at the heart of Tsao’s talent as both an artist and a designer. Tsao’s most influential modern art works were created through a process directed by the artist that mimics nature’s passage and its encounters with the unexpected along the way. In Tsao’s custom designed Flood Room, or painting studio, he created a space that combined the elements of water, movement and heat. After slowly becoming established as an artist, he launched a parallel career in the late 1990s as a designer of women’s apparel, creating jewel-toned jackets inspired by the rich palette of hand woven Thai silk. Celebrate the unveiling of Sidney’s, the new rooftop venue and sculpture garden at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. On Thursday, April 4, take part in the Gala on the Rooftop, starting with cocktails at 6 p.m. Be present for the rooftop’s reveal and help support the Davis Art Center’s programming. Sidney’s on the Rooftop will be a performance and event venue that overlooks the Caloosahatchee River and downtown Fort Myers. The Gala on the Rooftop will be the unveiling of the space, scheduled to open to the public later in 2019. The evening will include cocktails on the rooftop, a fine dining experience in the Grand Atrium, and innovative music and theatrical performances. The evening will also include a live and silent auction, which will raise money for rooftop completion and programming. It will also include temporary sculpture installations, which will be unveiled during the Gala on the Rooftop. Seasonal sculpture installations will be unveiled upon opening to
the public. The April 4 gala fundraiser will utilize the entire Art Center while introducing guests to the rooftop. Additional work on the Sculpture Garden will continue after the gala, and before Sidney’s is open to the public. Tickets are $250 each. Co-chairs of the event are Dwayne Bergmann, Marc Collins, Fran Fenning and Todd Schusterman. The Rooftop Sculpture Garden will be an extension of the art center's existing programs. It will include catering and event capabilities by chefs Mike and Karen Gavala of G3 Catering, the exclusive caterer of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Naples Artcrafters to wrap up season April 13 in Cambier Park
The Naples Artcrafters will host their final juried fine art and craft show of the season on Saturday, April 13. The event showcases the work of 90 juried local artists and craftsmen who will be selling their paintings, jewelry, pottery, art glass, sculptures and more in lovely Cambier Park, which is located on 8th Street South, just one block south of 5th Ave South in downtown Naples. Meet well known and emerging Naples’ artists in this celebration of creativity. It will be a wonderful opportunity to shop local and support your artists. Admission is free, and free parking is nearby. The April 13 show runs 28 - April 2019
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Naples Artcrafters was founded in 1966 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of local artists and the encouragement of the development of artistic endeavors in the Naples area. Chasing Dallas, The Echo, Deb & The Dynamics and Bite the Bullet will be performing at the 10th annual BBQ, Bands & Brew festival on Sunday, April 7 in Fort Myers. A highlight of each year’s event is an impressive lineup of Southwest Florida’s top pit masters competing for the title of “Best BBQ in Town.” Famous Dave’s, Jonesez BBQ, Dave’s Bangin’ BBQ, Addiction BBQ and BurgerQue have confirmed their attendance, as well as Artisan Gelato by Norman Love and Scirrotto’s Cinnamon City. Additional vendors include Sattler’s Leather Crafts & Hats, Reel Islander Apparel, Costco and Homes for Heroes of Southwest Florida. The ACMA rents the All Faiths Congregation on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers for its touring artists shows. Each show has a local songwriter open for the headliner. The ACMA also hosts very popular free concerts in three more locations that present three local songwriters in a round robin format.

The ACMA welcomes Sharon Goldman on April 6. Sharon is a New Jersey-based singer-songwriter whose "intense, insightful, vivid" storytelling is a "clinic in how to paint an indelible picture with the simplest images and symbols," says Alan Young, New York Music Daily. Over several well-received albums released over the past decade, she has combined heartfelt portraits and memorable lyrics with unforgettable melodies and expressive vocals — taking a folk/pop sensibility to new artistic heights. She performs regularly at house concerts, folk coffeehouses, festivals, arts and cultural venues and community centers. Sharon was honored with a showcase spot at the 2017 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance conference; a finalist spot at the 2017 South Florida Folk Festival songwriting competition and three Honorable Mentions at the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest. Chuck Williams will open for her. He has been appearing throughout New England and in recent years has gone coast to coast with his music. He has been traveling to coffeehouses, performing arts centers and festivals sowing seeds of his songs along the way. Chuck has mastered is how to pull at Americana heartstrings and tell rootsy stories through his simple and effective novella type lyrics. Chuck has a personable singing style and it's not done to impress but express. 8 Ball Aitken comes to Fort Myers on April 13. Australian slide-guitarist and songwriter 8 Ball Aitken has spent more than a decade on the road playing 200+ shows each year worldwide. Ross is a songwriter, singer, guitar slinger and painter weaving stories for the ears and the eyes. Based in The Peach State, Jefferson travels throughout the U.S. and Europe performing his original music and sharing his art. Jefferson is an ACMA favorite. He's been with the ACMA since the beginning and never

The next Songwriters at Sunset is April 4 and features Bill Metts, Ross Jordan and Bob Williams. This free show starts at 5:45 p.m. At Lovers Key State Park. Be sure to give yourself an extra 30 minutes to park and take the tram to the beach. The show is free parking is $8 per car. FOLKS (Friends of Lovers Key, Inc.) has joined with the ACMA to offer free acoustic concerts of all original music. The concerts will take place in the large gazebo located right on the beach. Seating is available for the first 80 people. Additional seating is also available on the sand. The FOLKS group will offer a beach BBQ fundraiser at the show. Ross Jordan has been writing songs since he picked up a guitar at age 10. He went on to study music and classical guitar at Rutgers University. His songs reflect the regional influences from all of the parts of the country that he has lived from New Jersey to the West Coast o the Midwest and now Southwest Florida, His songs feature catchy tunes and lyrics and audience members can often be seen dancing and swaying and singing along while he performs. Bob Williams’ original songs and the stories behind his songs always brings a smile as a teenager Bob began writing his own music. Pulling elements from folk rock and country rock, Bob created a sound all of his own. Bob's songs are personal. Irreverent. Funny. Sad. And most importantly, true to his heart. Bob performs regularly solo and with the Pearl Street Band. Bob has released his second album, Ain’t Sorry Yet. I had the honor of being asked to perform at the annual Mississippi John Hurt Blues Festival in Avalon, Ms. in 2011. All types of music move me I but prefer to play and sing traditional Americana roots music.”
Songwriters on the Plaza
The Lee County Library has joined with the ACMA to offer free acoustic concerts of all original music. Concerts will take place in the amphitheater, which is located on South Cornog Plaza. Bring a chair or a blanket, shows will be moved indoors depending on weather. If needed the show will be indoor in the South Building that is attached to Talking Books Library. The address is 1651 Lee St., next to the Second Street parking lot. The next Songwriters on the Plaza in downtown Fort Myers will be April 9 at 6 p.m. and feature Chuck Williams, David Hintz and Ross Jordan (see article on page 55). Songwriters at the Library The final Songwriters at the Library of the season will take place April 13 at 2 p.m. at the South County Regional Library, 21100 Three Oaks Parkway in Estero. Singer Songwriter Circle
Singer songwriters circle is held every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation at 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. The circle is for acoustic songwriters of all levels. Songs and experiences are shared in a non-judgmental, casual atmosphere. No membership required. All are welcome to come and play or just to listen. The Americana Community Music Association provides a venue for local and touring artists, many are award winning performers in the Americana/Folk community. Chrysalis Chamber Players April 16 Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers presents Chrysalis Chamber Players on Tuesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. at the Grand Cypress Room at The Woodlands. The Chrysalis Chamber Players is a nonprofit chamber music ensemble offering a kaleidoscope of high-caliber chamber music. Symphonic Chorale concludes season April 12 & 14
The Symphonic Chorale’s will conclude its eighth season with the premiere of “Blue Squills,” a new composition by popular American composer Eric William Barnum, who will be in Southwest Florida for the premiere. Bonita Springs Concert Band performs April 14 The final concert of the season by the Bonita Springs Concert Band will be Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. at Riverside Park on Old 41 Road in downtown Old Bonita. The excitement of the band has been outstanding this season. The 90 band members are under the direction of Gary Smith, who retired after 44 - April 2019
24 years as conductor of the University of Illinois Marching Illini Band. Gary says, “the talent of these musicians is tremendous, ranging in age from 15 to 90.” Mike Davis, who performed with the band in November, will be back to narrate “The Greatest Generation.” Davis headed all musical productions at Disney World and then Disney International. Southwest Florida Symphony to perform season finale April 27 The Southwest Florida Symphony closes its 58th season with flair that includes a guest violinist of extraordinary stature on Saturday, April 27 with Masterworks V: Fantastique! at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW. The performance happens at 7:30 p.m., with Maestro Kabaretti’s highly popular pre-concert lecture taking place at 6:30 p.m. These lectures are offered in order to better educate audiences about the pieces being performed and often feature a guest artist Q & A and demonstrations. Masterworks V: Fantastique! is conducted by the Southwest Florida Symphony’s internationally renowned music director Maestro Nir Kabaretti and features Hector Berlioz’s famous Symphonie Fantastique and contemporary Giora Schmidt composer, Noam Sheriff’s compelling piece, Akeda. Punctuating the program is Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto with guest artist Giora Schmidt, who has performed with the Philadelphia, Cleveland, Atlanta Symphony and Chicago Symphony Orchestras among others. In recital and chamber music, Giora Schmidt has performed at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, San Francisco Performances, the Louvre Museum in Paris, and Tokyo's Musashino Cultural Hall. Born in Philadelphia to professional musicians from Israel, Giora began playing the violin at the age of four. A graduate of the Juilliard School, his teachers have included Geoffrey Michaels, Patinka Kopec, Dorothy DeLay and Itzhak Perlman; with additional guidance from Pinchas Zukerman. Committed to education and sharing his passion for music, Giora was on the faculty of the Juilliard School, the Perlman Music Program and recently appointed Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music (CCM.) Through technology and social media, he continues to find new ways of reaching young violinists and music lovers around the world. The Lee County Community Band will present “April in Paradise,” its last concert of the season, at 3 p.m. on April 7 at Cape Coral High School. Symphonic Mastersingers present Faure and Vivaldi
The Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers perform their end of season concert, Faure and Vivaldi with the Mastersingers, on Friday, April 5 at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, 9751 Bonita Beach Road SE, Bonita Springs. The choral ensemble will be joined by the Mastersingers Festival Orchestra in a program that includes Gabriel Faure’s stunningly beautiful setting of the requiem along with Antonio Vivaldi’s popular Gloria. In addition to the well-loved masterworks, the repertoire will also include a performance of the winning composition of the inaugural Sanibel-Captiva Trust Company Prize, Before You Kissed Me by Dr. Zack Stanton. The composer competition is the Mastersingers latest community initiative, and Stanton’s work was selected from over 200 pieces submitted. Stanton, a professor at the University of Iowa, set the music for this composition to a Sara Teasdale poem. This concert marks not only
the completion of the group’s 18th season, but also, the end of Jeff Faux’s nine-year run as artistic director. Says director Faux, “Through my time with the Mastersingers I have been most proud of how we have connected with the fabric of our community. We have produced concerts with music that has never been performed in Southwest Florida, and we have given singers of all ages the opportunity to sing in a high-quality community-based ensemble.” While Faux is directing his final domestic concert as artistic director, he will lead the group in singing the same pieces in Paris in June of 2019. The touring Mastersingers along with members of Faux’s church choir from First Presbyterian Church of Bonita will perform at L'église de la Madeleine, the very church that employed Gabriel Faure when he composed the Requiem. Take part in the final Jazzy Nights concert of the season featuring the genius of modern piano. The Marcus Roberts Trio is known for its virtuosic style and entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. While most jazz trios have the piano front and center, all members of the Marcus Roberts Trio share equally in shaping the direction of the music by changing its tempo, mood, texture, or form at any time. SW Florida Concert Band to play April 14
The Southwest Florida Concert Band will perform a concert Traveling Through Music on Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. at South Fort Myers High School, 14020 Plantation Road, Fort Myers. The 50-member community band will open the concert with an upbeat arrangement by Robert Sheldon based on the theme of the Arkansas Traveler. The band will play a grooving Latin number called Carnival in Sao Paulo that will be hard to sit still for, and then feature one of our trumpet players in a solo number. There will be a stirring march from Italy called “Florentiner” and we will perform “What A Wonderful World” with a saxophone solo. The band will play a Jamaican folk suite of three movements that is certain to give you the laid back feel of the Caribbean Islands. The music will take guests on a journey through the Wonderful World of Disney. The program will also include some music from Greece and a dynamic and memorable arrangement of “Curtain Call.” The brass quintet will show up to play a couple of numbers to round out the program. The band will conclude the last concert of the season with “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” All concerts are free with donations accepted. The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers continues its full schedule of concerts in the coming months. Tracy Byrd performs March 30 as part of the Sam Galloway Ford Concert Series. Tracy Byrd became a household name on the country music scene in 1993 when his third single, called “Holdin’ Heaven,” off of his MCA Records, self-titled debut album, hit #1 on the Billboard country charts. The album also included the remake hit of Johnny Paycheck’s “Someone to Give my Love to” cementing Byrd as a traditional country troubadour. David Hintz has been performing and writing songs since the mid 1960s. For reasons he will never quite understand, he put away pen and guitar for many years until the early 21st century. So after a 25 year hiatus David was coerced into going to an open mic in Fort Myers. Scared to death and being extremely shy he performed a few of his original songs and the world hasn’t been the same since. His songs are about love found and lost, divorce, peace, politics, religion, equality and rebirth. David writes and performs straight from the heart. Whatever the song topic the message is never sugar coated. He is always working on new material and is currently working on a new collection of original music. Ross Jordon has been writing songs since he picked up a guitar at age 10. He went on to study music and classical guitar at Rutgers University. His songs reflect the regional influences from all of the parts of the country that he has lived from New Jersey to the West Coast to the Midwest and now Southwest Florida, His songs feature catchy tunes and lyrics and audience members can often be seen dancing and swaying and singing along while he performs. Destination concerts
Key West offers a great opportunity for travelers to explore the uniqueness of Key West and see some of their favorite national artists perform in concert (indoors and outside). At least four concert venues host national artists. They include the Tennessee Williams Theatre at 5901 College Road, the Key West Theater at 512 Eaton St., the city-owned Key West Amphitheater at Truman Waterfront Park and the Sunset Green Event Lawn at 24 North Hotel at 3820 N. Roosevelt Blvd. At the Key West Theater, the music schedule includes Night Ranger on April 10 (two shows), Richard Marx on April 14, Edwin McCain on April 16, The Psychedelic Furs on April 19, Martin Barre celebrates 50 years of Jethro Tull featuring Clive Bunker, Dee Palmer and special guests on May 2. David Crosby & Friends are scheduled for May 24. The theater will host the Key West Blues Festival on May 25. As for the outdoor venues ... The Beach Boys will perform at the Sunset Green Event Lawn on April 4. The gates open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. At the Key West Amphitheater, The Revivalists with Rayland Baxter are scheduled to perform April 6. Slightly Stoopid has been added to the amphitheater concert schedule. They will play June 9, along with Matisyahu, Tribal Seeds and Hirie. Located at the new Truman Waterfront, the Key West Amphitheater is situated near Fort Zachary with stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico from the top of the lawn - don't miss the world famous Key West Sunset on show day. Taste of the Keys April 15
People eager to savor the flavors of the multifaceted Florida Keys can do so at the 24th annual Taste of Key West, a tempting tasting set for 6-9 p.m. Monday, April 15. The eclectic feast takes place at Mallory Square, the waterfront home of Key West’s world-renowned nightly Sunset Celebration. It traditionally showcases indulgent edibles such as tropical and Caribbeaninfluenced cuisine, fresh-off-the-boat local seafood, vegetarian dishes and European fare. Chefs from more than 50 local restaurants and catering companies typically participate, donating their time and talent to create offerings that include gourmet delights, casual tidbits and decadent desserts. “Foodies” can complement the delicacies with their choice of more than 100 beers and wines available for sampling. In addition, a kids’ zone is planned to entertain young attendees.
Gates open at 6 p.m. Biking or walking to the event is suggested, but limited parking may be available at Mallory Square. General admission to Taste of Key West is free. Attendees can purchase $25 packages that include either a plate, commemorative wine glass or pint beer glass and 20 tickets to be exchanged for food and beverages. “Tastes” typically “cost” three to six tickets each. Other options range from a “date night” package for two people to a company package for five people. Additional food tickets can be purchased as well. The 24th Annual Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association's Key West Songwriters Festival, presented by BMI will take place May 8 12. The Key West Songwriters Festival will feature top hit-makers alongside up and coming talent in the most iconic venues in the southernmost point in the U.S. The festival revolves around five days and nights where live music bliss introduces crowds to the faces, voices and stories behind the songs. Afro Roots Fest April 18 - 20 Audiences can celebrate world music with an emphasis on Cuban rhythms during the annual Afro Roots Fest showcase in Key West. Music and film events are planned Thursday through Saturday, April 18 - 20, in multiple venues around the island. The cultural kaleidoscope is to begin at 9 p.m. Thursday with a kick-off party at the Green Parrot Bar, 601 Whitehead St., featuring live music by Electric Piquete. The critically acclaimed Latin funk and fusion band is known for its innovative originals and interpretations drawing on Afro-Caribbean, jazz and rock influences. There is no cover charge for the show and everyone age 21 and over is welcome. The focus turns to film Friday, April 19, 62 - April 2019
with a 6 p.m. showing of the musical documentary “Eliades Ochoa: from Cuba to the World” at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton St. The film spotlights the world-renowned Cuban guitarist and singer who was an original member of the iconic Cuban band known as the Buena Vista Social Club. A questionand-answer session with the director, Cynthia Biestek, and a reception for film fans are to follow the screening. Tickets are $10 each. The Studios of Key West also is the setting for a Saturday night concert of Cuban music by Cortadito, whose traditional stylings have evoked comparisons to the Buena Vista Social Club. Renowned for performing standards from the early 20th century, the band is to introduce melodies from its latest release,
“Canciones de Julio.” Ticket prices for the 8 p.m. show range from $32 to $55 per person. Following the concert, music lovers can head to the Green Parrot for a 10 p.m. afterparty showcasing the distinctive sound of the Spam Allstars, whose music has been called everything from a blend of electronica, AfroCuban and hip-hop to a “descarga” or Latin jam. The Afro Roots Fest also features events in Islamorada and Key Largo. A Memorial Day weekend concert is planned Sunday, May 26, at Islamorada’s Florida Keys Brewing Co. in the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District. Key Largo’s festival event is scheduled for June 28-29 at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center.
