FLORIDA REP EDUCATION CONSERVATORY
A Chorus Line A Chorus Line, the long-awaited, singular sensation from the Florida Rep Education Conservatory opens Aug. 9 at the Historic Arcade Theatre. The iconic show has music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. The musical is based on the book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante. It captures the spirit and tension of a Broadway chorus audition. Centered on 17 dancers, the musical is set on a bare stage and explores the inner lives of professional Broadway hopefuls who would give everything to have a career as a performer. A Chorus Line once held the record for the most performed musical on Broadway and has continued on to be one of the most translated and produced musicals worldwide. Featuring one powerhouse moment after the other, memorable numbers include “What I Did for Love,” “One,” “I Can Do That,” “At the Ballet,” “The Music and the Mirror” and “I Hope I Get It.” The production is directed by Kody C. Jones, director of the Florida Rep Education Department. The Conservatory program is designed for young artists who are looking to pursue theatre as a career. It offers young artists an introduction to the professional world with a real-life regional theatre experience, providing a creative outlet that culminates with a run of public performances. “Performing A Chorus Line is almost a rite of passage for every young actor,” Jones explains. “This show exudes so much angst and passion and exhibits the many sacrifices an artist makes on their journey to pursuing the stage as a career. Cultural Park Theater to start new season with Wizard of Oz
By Michael Moran
Season ticket sales are now open for the 56th season of Cape Coral’s live theater located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd. First will be the family classic musical, The Wizard of Oz (Sept. 7 through Sept. 16), followed by the premiere of A Wedding in Tuscany (Oct. 5 through Oct. 14), written by Patrick Shepherd. The original revue is described as follows: "The Italian American song book of the most popular songs of pop cultural and classic music takes the cast of this production on a musical journey staged in a small town in Italy as they prepare for a wedding that not only the bride and groom celebrate but so will the audiences as they leave the theater singing song after song from this wonderful evening out on the town.” Following will be the opening of the far-
cical play by Woody Allen, Don’t Drink the Water (Oct. 26 through Nov. 4). It takes place the U.S. Embassy of an unnamed country behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. The action centers on a family, tourists from New Jersey, who become trapped in the Embassy after a misunderstanding. It is up to Axel Magee, the son of the ambassador, who has been left in charge in his father’s absence, to figure out a way for the Hollanders to return safely to the United States. The continuing 10 productions of the season will include the comedies The Butler Did It, Ripcord and Lend Me A Tenor. Attached to these is our family favorite “A Spectacular Christmas Revue” followed by a new musical revue of “Broken Hearts” (when the Jersey Girls meet the Brooklyn Boys.) The season highlights two major musicals: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar (Jan. 11 through Jan. 20) and the long awaited return of Chicago (March 1 through March 10.) Surrounding the 10 production

Charlotte Players prep for 58th season
Charlotte Players executive director Sherrie Moody is excited about the upcoming season. “We are expanding the number of shows at the Langdon Playhouse and reducing shows at the Cultural Center of Charlotte County. There are many reasons for this decision, not the least of which is the success our Langdon shows enjoyed last season. We had a number of sold-out performances, for which we thank our audiences, actors, directors and many behindthe-scenes volunteers.” From Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap (Sept. 7 – 16) to Arsenic and Old Lace (Nov. 8 – 18) to Steel Magnolias (in March) and the return of the popular Sex Please, We’re 60 (in April), the Langdon Playhouse is offering a fantastic group of plays. Langdon special events include local actor Jack Rabito reprising his starring role as Harry Truman in Give ’Em Hell, Harry! Auditions for the second show of the season, Visiting Mr. Green, take place at the Langdon on Aug. 26 and 27. New Phoenix Theatre to open
inaugural season in January
Quality takes time. The New Phoenix Theatre, Southwest Florida’s newest community theatre, has announced changes to its inaugural season. Why excited? As building permits have all been secured, the theater’s contractor has provided a construction calendar that finishes the new Fort Myers theatre’s construction in November of this year. As such, New Phoenix has shortened its season from six to four productions to accommodate the building schedule. The beautiful new 96-seat theatre, located at13211 McGregor Blvd., south of College Parkway, will mount its first production, Scott McPherson’s tragicomic play Marvin’s Room in January of 2019. Auditions for Marvin’s Room will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3. The remaining plays for the season are the Jerry Herman musical, La Cage aux Folles (in March), Michael Cristofer’s moving The Shadow Box (in May), and Neil Simon’s hysterical farce, Rumors (in June).
The group’s website states: “In the spring of 2017, a group of passionate actors, directors, and theatre enthusiasts sat around a local Southwest Florida home musing about the possibility of bringing another community theatre to our area. We reminisced about our theatre experiences in SW Florida and around the country, and how we might be positioned to bring something new to and exciting to our region if we could combine our talents. We had lively discussions as we worked to define our mission, an endeavor that is not for the feint of heart. In time, we reached consensus on the core philosophies that would represent our theatre to the public and our mission was born: New Phoenix Theatre creates entertainment to enlighten the community, celebrate diversity, and inspire imagination. For more information on the New Phoenix Theatre, its auditions and productions, go to their website at www.newphoenixtheatrefortmyers.org.

BIG ARTS to revise its theater program after years of losses
BIG ARTS on Sanibel Island has announced it will revise its BIG ARTS Strauss Theater program in response to consistent yearly financial losses, as well as consider improvements to the theater facility on Periwinkle Way. While the board of directors voted to discontinue the theater in its current model for season 2019, it is enthusiastically committed to theater arts programming as integral to its mission to bring all the arts to our community. “We have enjoyed many wonderful moments and appreciate the fine work at the theater, but annual increases in the theater’s marketing budget and broad local and regional print, promotions and digital outreach since 2014 have not improved ticket sales; nor has revising the season schedule and offerings. The average ticket sales have remained the same since 2010 - the year the theater was acquired through a generous grant from the Klug and Boler families,” said Hyde Tucker, BIG ARTS board president. The “bridge” 2019 season will host the popular children’s the-
ater arts program, Creative Theater Workshop, as well as lectures by two renowned theater arts professionals and a possible theater panel. A community strategic planning process will take place in the fall to open a community dialogue to help create a vision for “theater 2020” at BIG ARTS and to enlist the support of those in the community with professional theater expertise to help share in shaping its future. Bobby Logue, the Strauss Theater’s artistic director, is programming this year’s offerings and will manage the season activities. “I am looking forward to exploring the possibilities and potential for a dynamic and diversified BIG ARTS theater arts program for all ages. While change is always difficult, the opportunity to create a sustainable theater program is a wonderful challenge,” said Bobby Logue. BIG ARTS welcomes the community’s commitment and feedback. There is a special online “Tell Us What You Think” section of the website for people to offer ideas, comments and opinions. Go to www.bigarts.org.

DAAS Co-Op, Union Artist Studios collaborate for group show
In August, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts will host the art of the members of the Union Artist Studios. Founded in 2012, the group is celebrating six years as the only organized artists’ studio in southwest Florida. The exhibition showcases two pieces from each member and the opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, Aug.11 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Located on the second floor of the Edwards Building on the Alliance for the Arts campus, the Union Artist Studios houses the creative spaces of 10 local artists. One of these creatives is Julia Da Rocha, who has been with the group since 2016. “We are always here, especially on weekends and we enjoy the inspiration this place brings us. We bounce ideas off each other and collaborate in many events together. We are family here,” says Da Rocha, whose expressionistic and vibrant designs are licensed by denydesigns.com and featured by Joss & Alex Wilkinson Main, One Kings 16 - August 2018
Lane, Fab, Rue La La, Amazon, Houzz, Hautelook and HGTV. Alex Wilkinson and Lesley Morrow are also members of the Union. This mother and daughter duo share a space, but their styles are unique and very recognizable. Wilkinson’s work is figurative, but full of whimsy. Morrow’s is focused on portraits, created in a very loose and intriguing technique. Both artists joined the group in 2016. Other members participating on the show are David Acevedo, Xavier Brignoni, Erik Schlake, John Scoppa, Frank Rodriguez and Dawn Scandale. All art lovers and collectors are invited to join DAAS for the opening reception on Aug. 11. For more information about the gallery, visit www.daascoop.com or call 239-590-8645. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery is located in the Royal Palm Square, in the heart of the SoCo Cultural District (www.socoswfl.com), at 1400 Colonial Blvd., suite 84 in Fort Myers. Abstracted group show at Davis Art Center Michael Pohlman
Karen Gozzo Nolan, Michael Pohlman, Jeffrey Scott Lewis & Yvonne Krystman
Four diverse artists come together in August for the Abstracted group art show at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in downtown Fort Myers. Opening during Art Walk on Aug. 3, Abstracted features the works of Karen Gozzo Nolan, Michael Pohlman, Jeffrey Scott Lewis and Yvonne Krystman. Each artist contributed works that exemplify the abstract, yet evoke powerful emotions. The word abstract refers to something that exists as an idea or concept, but has no concrete meaning or physical representation. In the group art show Abstracted, the artists had the unique challenge of creating meaning out of something seemingly meaningless. Through shape, line, texture, and color, each artist brings their own interpreta-

tion of the abstract to the exhibition. For some, the translation is gritty, cold, and harsh, and for others, it’s warm, soft and peaceful. For artist Michael Pohlman, the abstract means “taking something familiar and placing it in an unfamiliar setting.” In Pohlman’s work, this can be seen in the clash between color and shape: soft, warm circles intermingling with harsh, jagged lines. Each artist, however, brings their own perspective to this group show, which can only be properly experienced in person. The exhibit closes Aug. 28. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District.

Symphonic Chorale of Southwest Florida
Summer Sing Aug. 28
The Symphonic Chorale of Southwest Florida will present its fourth annual Summer Sing on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center in the downtown Fort Myers River District beginning at 7 p.m. The Symphonic Chorale warmly welcomes all area singers who would like to participate. Summer Sing is free of charge, and no audition is necessary. Summer Sing 2018 will feature a rehearsal and subsequent performance of John Rutter’s Requiem, a musical setting of parts of the Latin Requiem, with added psalms and biblical verses. Artistic director Dr. Trent Brown will lead all singers in a rehearsal, and then Requiem will be presented to the audience, complete with chorus, soprano soloist, and the chorale’s talented accompanist, pianist Abbey Allison. “We are very excited to be doing Summer Sing at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center for the second time and proud to present this beautiful work.” says Symphonic Chorale conductor Dr. Trent Brown. “We had over 120 singers join us for Summer Sing last year, and this year we want to add to that number. We also hope to welcome a larger audience.” Summer Sing is quickly becoming an end-of-summer event that is
highly anticipated by area singers. All singers are invited to participate. Scores will be provided or singers may bring their own. Singers are asked to register for free online at www.symphonicchorale.org so adequate seating will be provided. The Chorale is grateful to the City of Fort Myers through its arts & culture grant program that will help support this event in the River District. The Symphonic Chorale of Southwest Florida is the area’s only professional core community chorus and is the resident chorus of the Southwest Florida Symphony. Area singers are also encouraged to audition for the chorale and enjoy being part of its 2018– 2019 season. For more information on Summer Sing or the chorale, call (239) 560-5695.
Record label to hold talent search Sept. 18 Creative Minds Records (CMR), a Fort Myers-based indie record label, is hosting a talent search open to vocalists and vocal groups of all ages. The CMR Talent Search will take place at the Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers on Sept. 18 at approximately 7 p.m. The talent search spotlights Southwest Florida’s aspiring artists and provides them with a stage to showcase their unique singing and songwriting capabilities in the genres of country, pop, rock, blues and R&B. At the end of the show, the dedicated talent management team at CMR will select one winner to receive a $2,500 cash prize and the chance to sign a record deal that includes worldwide marketing and distribution. “CMR is all about building relationships with the most talented and versatile singers and entertainers in Southwest Florida,” says Teresa Zepcevski, owner of Creative Minds Records. “Every voice deserves to be heard and discovery should be about your personal abilities, not about who you know.” Individuals and groups can register at no cost and must pre-register and submit material for consideration at

After his discharge from service, he went to California where he wrote and pitched songs to record companies in Los Angeles. He studied music theory for a year and a half at City College, became a dad, formed a band in San Francisco called ‘The Clayton Gang’, got divorced, moved to Nashville, met and married his current wife and retired to SW Florida where he continues writing and singing songs. The ACMA welcomes Dana Copper to Fort Myers on Aug. 25. Out of the heartland of America, stomping grounds of Truman and Twain, “powerhouse” troubadour Dana Cooper dedicated himself to a life of music over 40 years ago. This song poet engages and inspires audiences around the world with his quick wit, insightful stories and commanding presence. He is the recipient of the 2014 Heritage Musician award from Pilgrim Center for the Arts in Kansas City, MO. He was also named the 2015 Spirit of Folk award winner by Folk Alliance International. He has performed on Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage and the Kerrville Folk Festival where he was nominated for their Hall of Fame. vocalist Maura O’Connell; and luminary songwriters Pierce Pettis and Susan Werner. Cooper’s mixture of flat-picking, finger-picking and percussive strumming style is legend among other guitarists. An expressive singer his voice is ageless evoking a rich lifetime of experience. ACMA member Ross Jordan opens for Dana Cooper. Ross has been writing songs since he picked up a guitar at age 10. He went on to study music and classical guitar at Rutgers University. His songs reflect the regional influences from all of the parts of the country that he has lived from New Jersey to the West Coast o the Midwest and now Southwest Florida. The 502s will perform on Sept. 1. This Orlando based indie band applied to play the ACMA and received six big thumbs up from the music committee. Fresh, young and energetic, the 502s will bring you to your feet and leave you smiling. The 502s are a raucous indie folk group formed by three cousins from Central Florida. Since 2015, The 502s have taken their swaggering blend of Americana across the coast including Okeechobee Music Festival and Communion Records' NYC showcase. Their album is a heartfelt invitation to good old-fashioned fun, and they are celebrating with a tour of the US and Europe in 2018. Paul Elliott will open for the 502s. He got a late start, bought his first guitar when he was 30 something. He started singing and playing with Cliff Haslam in the late ‘80s at the famous Griswold Inn in Essex, Conn. SAM GALLOWAY CONCERT SERIES AT THE RANCH
Tanya Tucker, Love & Theft, The LACS, Scotty McCreery
The Sam Galloway Concert Series in conjunction with Gator Country 101.9 has announced a new schedule of national artists scheduled to perform at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers. Cody Johnson will perform at The Ranch on Aug. 18. When Cody Johnson’s Cowboy Like Me debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Country Albums chart in January 2014, jaws dropped in offices all over Nashville. “I got a lot of ‘Who is this kid?’” Johnson says with a laugh two years later. “I love that. That was a new horizon. And I’m gonna work to make sure people know exactly who I am.” The Sam Galloway Concert Series welcomes Riley Green Tanya Tucker on Sept. 1. Riley Green was raised on the sounds of old traditional country, bluegrass, and southern Gospel music. With a mixture of outlaw-rebellion and respect for tradition, Riley’s original music has already tallied over 27 million streams to date while his latest music video for “Bury Me In Dixie” has been viewed over a million times since last fall. The iconic Tanya Tucker returns to The Ranch on Sept. 7. In 1974, Rolling Stone ran a cover story on Tanya Tucker with the headline that said “You’re Gonna Hear From Me.” Truer words have never been spoken. For four decades, her sultry voice and vivacious stage presence has helped to make her one of the most admired and respected female vocalists in the Country Music genre. Tanya’s reign includes 23 Top 40 albums and a string of 56 Top 40 singles, 10 of which reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts. Along the way, she has provided some of the biggest country music hits of each decade, including, “Blood Red and Goin’ Down,” “Would you Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone)” and “Texas (When I Die)” just to name a few. Tucker is also the recipient of numerous awards, including two CMAs, two ACMs and three CMT awards. Love and Theft will perform Oct. 5 at The Ranch Concert Hall. Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson — launched with the No. 1 country smash “Angel Eyes” and top 10 hit “Runaway.” The longtime friends and bandmates have gone on to garner more than 3 billion radio impressions, over 300 million plays on Pandora, and are nearing 3 million music video streams for the critically acclaimed “Whiskey On My Breath,” an epic ballad that “returns Love And Theft to the harmony-rich sound that first turned heads when they Scotty McCreery started out,” (Rolling Stone). photo by Jeff Ray Happenings Magazine
The ACM/CMA/CMT nominated duo has built a loyal fan base through their high-energy shows, infectious harmonies, and signature songwriting and is poised for the next chapter in their musical journey. The pair is currently putting the final touches on their fourth studio album, produced by legendary music icon Jim Ed Norman, and will release on Curb Records later this year. On Oct. 13, The Ranch will welcome Scotty McCreery to the Fort Myers stage. “I’ve lived a lot of life since my last record,” says Scotty McCreery. “I moved out on my own, I travelled across the country and the world, I got engaged, I was dropped by my label, I was even robbed at gunpoint. So I really wanted this album to show who Scotty is at 24, what’s going on in my life, and I think we accomplished that.” With his third album (plus a chart-topping Christmas record), the young star takes a huge creative step forward. He co-wrote all 11 songs on Seasons Change, working with some of the finest songwriters in Nashville to express a wide range of emotions and musical styles. And after a lengthy legal struggle that kept him on the sidelines for several years, McCreery placed a bold bet with his career that has paid off with a new label and a reinvigorated attitude. After winning Season Ten of American Idol in 2011, McCreery made history when he became the youngest male artist of any genre, and the first country music artist ever, to have his debut album enter at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Clear as Day was certified Platinum for sales of one million units in just 13 weeks and became the best-selling solo album released by a country artist in 2011. The singles “I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble with Girls” were also certified Platinum. He won the New Artist of the Year award at both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards and the American Country Awards, and also received the CMT Award for Breakthrough Video of the Year for “The Trouble with Love and Theft Girls.” Upchurch The Redneck is scheduled to play Oct. 26. The Lacs will perform at The Ranch Nov. 3 as part of the Sam Galloway Concert Series. Meanwhile, Deuterman Productions presents Steel Pulse in concert on Aug. 8, and radio station 96 K-rock presents Nonpoint in concert on Aug. 23 The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community, says Brian Tidwell, general sales manager of Sam Galloway Ford. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community, Tidwell said. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse
With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.

Florida Keys folk art exhibit
Islands, Imagination and Instance: Florida Keys Folk Art brings together paintings, sculptures, mosaics and wood carvings by folk artists working in the Florida Keys, both historic and contemporary. Variously termed folk, primitive, visionary, naïve, and outsider, these artists have played a significant role in our local community. Unlike academic or fine art, folk art typically derives from deeply-rooted community traditions, with master craftspeople developing a local style emulated by others and passed from one generation to the next. The exhibit runs now through Jan. 6, 2019, at the Key West Art & Historical Society’s Custom House Museum, 281 Front. St. For more details, visit www.kwahs.org or call 305-295-6616.
