Peace, love & music
If you were born in the 1950s or earlier, you probably “remember” The Sixties and the great music from that decade. For those younger Baby Boomers (like me), you were too young to appreciate the great sounds, but hopefully fell in love with them later. This month, the nation marks the 50th anniversary of that famous event of peace, love and music called Woodstock. As a big fan of outdoor music festivals, I wish I had been old enough to experience that moment in history first hand. (Alas, I was only 6 at the time, and my free-spirited parents didn’t see fit to travel to upstate New York for Woodstock.) Whether you lived or experienced that decade or not, a lot of great music and artists came from that period and influenced future music makers. You will notice in this month’s magazine we feature a few events (and a special band) that are taking place in August to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. Those events include a three-day (indoor) festival in Punta Gorda, a Hippiefest concert in Clearwater and an outdoor music festival in Brooksville (north of Tampa). It doesn’t matter if you like 60s music so much; more importantly, remember to live your life with peace, love and music.
Live theatre
A handful of our local troupes continue to stay active this summer. Here’s a look at some of the theatrical productions in and around Southwest Florida. Beauty and The Beast continues through Aug. 10 at the Broadway Palm in Fort Myers. That will be followed by the national tour of the hit musical Once, which plays Aug. 22 through Sept. 28. The conservatory program at Florida Repertory Theatre presents Spring Awakening Aug. 9 - 17 in Fort Myers. The world premiere of DMV opens Aug. 9 at the Laboratory Theater of Florida in Fort Myers. This production runs through Aug. 25. In Cape Coral, catch seven one-act plays at the Cultural Park Theatre. 4 - August 2019
Seven by Simonelli runs Aug. 16 - 18. The Studio Players give us Venus in Fur Aug. 23 - Sept. 6 at the Golden Gate Community Center in Naples. Theatre Conspiracy at the Alliance for the Arts kicks off its season with a production of Harvey, playing Aug. 15 - 25. The Charlotte Players take to the high seas with a mystery cruise Aug. 10.
Cabins selling fast
For those of you who like live music and theme cruises, we have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that the 2019 sailing of the Malt Shop Cruise this fall and the 2020 sailing of the Flower Power Cruise next March are both officially sold out. But, on the good side ... there’s still a few cabins left for the Soul Train Cruise Jan. 18 - 25, the Country Music Cruise Jan. 25 - Feb. 1, the Ultimate Disco Cruise Feb. 10 - 15 and the 70s Rock and Romance Cruise Feb. 15 - 22. Two of our favorites include the Disco Cruise and the 70s Rock Cruise. Kathy and I have been on both of them, and thoroughly enjoy the fellowship and music. Besides the live performances, cruisers get to interact with the artists. StarVista Live, who produces these music cruises, carefully selects artists that want to spend time with their fans. It’s like getting a meet and greet pass or a VIP pass for five or seven days with some of your favorite artists. For example ... Cheap Trick, America and Don Felder top the long list of artists aboard the next 70s Rock and Romance Cruise. KC and the Sunshine Band and the Commodores lead the massive lineup for the Ultimate Disco Cruise (which also has one of the best Bee Gees tribute bands we’ve ever seen). The Country Music Cruise performers include Larry the Cable Guy, Randy Owen, Tracy Lawrence and many more. The Jacksons and the Isley Brothers lead the long list of artists onboard the Soul Train Cruise. So, don’t delay. Book your cabin before these cruises sell out. Bonus ... you can save hundreds of dollars on your cabin by using the promo code “Happenings.” Visit our website for more details at www.HappeningsMagazine.net. Rock on,

Spring
conservatory program presents
Awakening
Florida Repertory Theatre’s Education Department presents Spring Awakening with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The eight-time Tony Award-winning Best Musical is the next offering in the conservatory program, and runs Aug. 9 - 11 and Aug. 15 - 17 in the Historic Arcade Theatre. Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. The landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality, and rock and roll that has been exhilarating audiences across the nation since it took Broadway by storm in 2006. The coming of age story for a group of teens is told through music that Entertainment Weekly called "the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade!" “Spring Awakening is based on the play of the same name and is well over 100 years old,” said education director Kody C. Jones. “The reason that this piece has stayed so universally reverent, topical, and imperative is that it deals with the same taboo

subjects that we are still challenged with in 2019. Using this show as a vehicle for artistic interpretation and self-enlightenment, the cast is able to channel these deep themes and struggles in every adolescent life and bring that poignancy to the stage in a way that resonates with both teens and adults.” Set in Germany in 1891, Spring Awakening follows a group of teens as they begin to navigate the murky waters of adolescence, puberty and self-discovery. The teens fall in and out of love, rebel against the adults in their lives, and discover the joy and the pain adulthood brings. The musical deals very frankly with issues that face teens today, and does so with a one-of-a-kind score, fresh choreography, fully-developed characters, and a timeless story. “It’s a vivid, intense piece of dramatic literature that addresses head on many
of the challenges that young people faced then and now,” says Florida Rep artistic director Greg Longenhagen. “While the main characters that inhabit the world of the play are teenagers, the themes are quite adult in nature. In an effort to prepare audiences, we’ve included a parental advisory for explicit content label on the production. I am proud that Kody and our Education Department continue to raise the bar by exploring timely topics that concern our children’s safety, well-being, and happiness. As a father, I can’t think of anything more precious or important than our children.” Tickets are $10 for students with a valid ID and $25//$20 for adults. Tickets are available online at www.FloridaRepEducation.org or by calling the box office at 239-332-4488 or toll free at 877-787-8053. Happenings Magazine

at Laboratory Theater
The world premiere of D.M.V. opens Aug. 9 at The Laboratory Theater of Florida in Fort Myers. After 30 years of working at the Fort Myers Department of Motor Vehicles, Bernice has one last day of work before retiring with a full pension. She’s already sold her home, packed her belongings, and celebrated, rather heavily, with her co-workers. Unfortunately, things go slightly awry. What follows is a laugh riot of what happens every day at virtually every D.M.V. Lab Theater’s artistic director Annette Trossbach says, “It's always a special treat to work directly with a playwright on a new play. It's a wonder to see that play leap off the page and come to life before your eyes, and to be able to perfect moments and characters with the creator him- or herself. In this case, I am delighted to once again collaborate with my friend, playwright Zalman Velvel, with whom I've shared some of the most thoughtful conversations over the years on topics such as theater, religion, economics, world history, and storytelling. And I thank the talented Carmen Crussard for signing on to helm this comedy that was born of Mr. Velvel’s many visits to the DMV and his interviews with staff members at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Fort Myers and elsewhere.” 8 - August 2019
Director Carmen Crussard adds, “Working at the Lab is always a welcome adventure. I appreciate the opportunity to be creative and to collaborate with a great team to build characters whom the world has never met before (unless they happened to be at the DMV that day). It is really nice to work with an original script and have access to the playwright who is flexible so I can really bring my vision and this story to life.” The theater has new seating. Rows A, B, and C are on the floor, and rows D and above are on risers. D.M.V. plays Aug. 9 - 25 at the Laboratory Theater of Florida. It stars Gerrie Benzing, Sam Bostic, Stacy Stauffer, Todd Lyman, Mike Dinko, David Cooley, Art Keene and Margaret Cooley. It is directed by Carmen Crussard (Play On!, And the Winner Is…, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940). Performance dates are Aug. 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 at 8 p.m., and Aug. 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase online at Brownpapertickets.com or by calling the box office at 239-2180481. For additional savings, guests may purchase a 2019-2020 season pass. For more info, visit LaboratoryTheaterFlorida.com

National tour of Once coming to Fort Myers
Once, the musical that broke new ground on Broadway, will begin rehearsals in Fort Myers in early August to prepare for its upcoming performances later in the month. Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards including Best Musical and winner of the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, Once is a truly original Broadway experience. The musical is based on the 2007 Academy Award-winning film of the same name which was written and directed by John Carney, and starred Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, with original music and lyrics by Hansard and Irglová. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, Once tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who's about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights... but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. It’s emotionally captivating and theatrically breathtaking, and Once draws you in from the very first note. It's an unforgettable story about going for your dreams... not living in fear... and the power of music to connect all of us. This tour will include the pre-show onstage bar atmosphere where the performers play random selections each night, and the audience can be on stage with their drinks and interact with the musicians. J. Michael Zygo, who performed in the Broadway production as the Emcee, will be recreating the original staging and movement by John Tiffany and Steven Hoggett, respectively. As an original Broadway and Off-Broadway cast member, he feels a special attachment to the incredible work realized by the original cast and creative team. Zygo’s recent credits include director of Once at Pittsburgh CLO, music director / associate choreographer of Once at The 10 - August 2019
Fulton Theatre / Virginia Repertory Theatre. He was also featured on the Grammy Award winning cast album of Once. The cast is led by Jack Gerhard as Guy and Mariah Lotz as Girl. Jack is a recent graduate of Rider University with a BFA in Musical Theatre. Previous regional credits include Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater, Michigan. Mariah is also a graduate of Rider University and has premiered numerous new shows in New York and was part of the Rising Star program at Fifth Avenue Theatre. The ensemble includes Todd Aulwurm (Bank Manager/Cello/Guitar), Carrie Lyn Brandon (Swing), Carlos Castillo (Andrej/Guitar/Bass Guitar/Ukulele), Trevor Craft (Svec/Mandolin/ Guitar/Drums/Banjo), Richard Daniel (Da/Mandolin), Elleon Dobias (Ex Girlfriend/ Violin), Emily Gregonis (Reza/Violin), Caleb Hartsfield (Emcee/Guitar), Jody Alan Lee (Swing), Sam Saint Ours (Swing), Jon Patrick Penick (Billy/Guitar), Marta Rymer (Swing), Matthew Staley (Eamon/Guitar/Piano/Cajon) and Tracy Thomas (Baruska/Accordian). Thompson (international tour of The Wizard of Oz, US tours Million Dollar Quartet, Fiddler on the Roof) and sound design by David Temby (Clearwing Productions/national tour of Memphis). Cultural Park Theater
wraps up summer with concert, one-act plays
By Michael Moran
As the summer winds up, Cultural Park is going out with its own brand of fireworks as we welcome Atilio Marinelli and Anne Tormela to the stage with their amazing voices as he pays tribute to Elvis Sinatra, Tom Jones, Mario Lanza, Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli and many others. Their unique voices will send the audiences out with their hearts full of song, memories and yes romance as Mr. Romantico himself takes our stage. Finally, we bring the outrageous comedy of playwright Joe Simonelli to the stage with Seven By Simonelli. This fast paced series of seven one-act plays will leave everyone with a smile and plenty of laughs as our summer season comes to an end. But don’t go away, season ticket sales opened on July 15 for the 57th Culliton Gunterberg Broadway Season which starts Sept. 13 through Sept. 22. First will be the family classic musical, The Little Mermaid, followed by the Florida premiere of Joe Simonelli’s The Ghost in the Meadow (Sept. 27 through Oct. 6). Fans of old-fashioned ghost stories will enjoy this creepy thriller. When two sisters relocate from Manhattan to an old farm house in upstate New York, they soon realize that they may not be Happenings Magazine
alone in the house. An old boyfriend drops in to visit and when the strange occurrences continue he calls on the services of a psychic colleague to try to quell the restless spirits. An old fashioned thriller written just for the stage ... Simonelli has written an atmospheric piece that delivers plenty of chills with a liberal dose of tension breaking comic relief. A real Halloween treat! Following will be the opening of another classic play, On Golden Pond, followed by Same Time Next Year, The Owl and the Pussycat and Nana’s Naughty Knickers. Attached to these is our family favorite, “A Spectacular Christmas Revue,” followed by a new musical revue of “A Passage to Ireland,” which will take you through a journey of Irish culture with music old and new celebrating the best of the Emerald Isle. The season highlights two major musicals: Dan Grogan’s Nunsense (Jan. 10 through Jan. 19) and the Broadway hit musical Urinetown (Feb. 28 through March 8.) Season tickets and packages can be purchased through the box office at the theater located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd., Cape Coral, or call 239-772-5862 Michael Moran is executive director of the Cultural Park Theatre Company.
The Studio Players present Venus in Fur by David Ives Aug. 23 - Sept. 8 Directed by Anna Segreto, the local production stars Maddy Hayes & Steven Coe. Desperate to find an actress to play the female lead in his adaptation of the classic tale of sadomasochism, Venus in Fur, a beleaguered playwright/director auditions a vulgar and equally desperate actress. Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda piques the playwright’s interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win. The Studio Players performs at The Golden Gate Community Center's Joan Jenks Auditorium, 4701 Golden Gate Parkway, Naples. Patrick Conolly exhibit at ACT
Altars, Shrines and Cabinets of Curiosities features 15 artists
Arts for ACT Gallery will host an artists reception on Aug. 2 for the opening of an exhibit featuring Patrick Conolly and a group exhibit for Altars, Shrines and Cabinets of Curiosities. Patrick Conolly has dabbled with the arts all his life. Using acrylics, his art appears spontaneously from his imagination. Most of Conolly’s recent works celebrate and reflect the unique beauty of Southwest Florida. He plays with the surface of his canvases, making them smooth and shiny. His line

work is minimal, while his colors are bright. His large works are simple, while the smaller works are filled with detail. His more recent paintings include “redefining” earlier works, some of which are one-of-a-kind prints, while others are something quite new. He has created a numbered series called Conolly’s Folly. In the Altars, Shrines and Cabinets of Curiosities exhibit, artists pay homage to loved ones, their muses, as points of power or religious focus. Some are mystical most are fashioned from found objects and created with found objects. The objects used in the shire are dear to the creator or connected to the deity or person in the altar. Cabinets of Curiosities can be a collection of notable objects encased in an altered cabinet. Collections can be historical, religious or antiques. Creating an altar or shrine or cabinet of curiosity is a sacred act of power and grace. These pieces create and show devotion, love and loss and connects us with life energy. You can expect to see an array of eclectic, surreal and whimsical altars, shrines and cabinets of curiosities. This exhibit continues through Monday, Sept. 2. Arts for ACT Gallery

Red exhibit at DAAS
In the month of August, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts features the work of member artists who were challenged to create a piece following a very interesting prospectus. The theme of the exhibition is the color red, as in red-hot sensuality or passion, but open to each artist’s interpretation. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 2 from 6 to 10 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display until Aug. 31. Martha Dodd is one of the gallery’s primary artists. Her approach to painting is realistic with a taste of fantasy. For the Red exhibition, she used her talents to produce a stunning portrait entitled Natasha. “This is a painting of a longtime friend of mine. It personifies her as someone who is deeply passionate about life, and makes the most of every moment. She is a world traveler, an artist, a business woman and rides horses. At the same time she can reveal a vulnerability in this image, says Dodd, who has been a member of DAAS Co-Op for the past two years. “I wanted to emphasize the intensity of the reds against the other cooler colors, in order to make the painting really sizzle,” concludes the artist. Sydney Roper is one of the gallery’s
With the piece “Two Minutes After,” founding member and gallery president David Acevedo, proposes a more sensual and risky approach to the exhibition’s theme. The title may suggest a situation after a sexual encounter, or perhaps a completely different moment for the nude male portrayed in the painting. Regardless, the artist is known to include suggestions and symbols in his work in order to provoke thought and conversation amongst the viewers. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening reception during August’s Art Walk. DAAS CoOp is located at 1815 Fowler St., Unit 3, in Fort Myers. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month. More information can be found at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645.

Frame Gallery & Gifts, Lorne’s Gallery in Cape Coral Cape Coral gallery owners Barbara and Lorne Hosack have spent most of their lives producing and selling coastal art. This family operation owns and operates Lorne’s Gallery at Tarpon Point Marina and Frame Gallery & Gifts on Del Prado Boulevard. Aside from being extremely interesting to pass through and look at all the sundries at Lorne's Gallery the view of all the wonderful boats and restaurants is something that looks like it should be in Naples. If you spend five minutes sauntering through the 3,000 squarefoot gallery, you won't have seen it all. There's so much to see. With over 500 pictures stacked here and there and over 20,000 images in print exclusive to Lorne's Gallery and their other gallery, Frame Gallery and Gifts, there's too much to comprehend. Additionally, the galleries offer high end printing. They have thousands of images that are exclusive to them. “That means that we own the originals, we own the printing rights, and we do the printing ourselves,” says Lorne. “And then after printing, they are the framers we frame small we frame big and we frame with our customers in mind. We are picky with our art and with the framing process.” The main gallery, that's been located on Del Prado Boulevard in Cape Coral for 29

years, is across from Wal-mart and approximately 5,000 square feet. For those customers who have a hard time deciding what image they will like in their home, they offer something called a 24-hour check out. This allows the buyer to take a framed piece of art home or several and look at that them in their own environment. This really helps an individual find the perfect piece for their home. Frame Gallery and Gifts is located at 1830 Del Prado Blvd. in Cape Coral, and can be reached by calling 239-5745111. Lorne’s Gallery is located in unit 105 at the Marina Village at Tarpon Point in Cape Coral and can be reached by calling 239-945-0866. Visit online at www.framegalleryandgifts.com

ARTScool, Your Choice exhibits

By Aimee Schlehr What a wonderful summer we’ve had, filled with amazing works created by inspired children and guided by our professional artists during ARTScool. ARTScool exhibition opens Aug. 12 at the Naples Art Association, the upcoming ARTScool Student exhibition featuring newly created artwork from the 21st annual summer arts program for children and teens. ARTScool intern David Paul curated the ARTScool exhibition. He is a long-time participant in the ARTScool program. “I started ARTScool classes when I was 7 years old,” said David Paul. “Once I turned 15, I became an ARTScool intern. is seeking artists to submit up to four pieces for the jury process. Art is generally considered to be a visual experience, but our appreciation of art does not need to come purely from sight. Touching is a basic instinct and a way to experience objects, gather information and build awareness. The Touchable Art exhibition will feature artwork by sighted, visually impaired and blind artists. Shaking off the traditional gallerygoer behavior, visitors are encouraged to use their sense of touch to explore the exhibition. The exhibition will be Oct. 4 - 17 and will be the feature of the Fredrick O. Watson Gallery at Naples Art Association. Reception will be held Oct 3 from 5:30 7:30 p.m.. Cash awards totaling $350 will be announced at the reception. Call for artist deadline is Sept. 27. For more information, go to www.naplesart.org and click on “Call for Artists.” For our extraordinary ticketed events in the coming season, Scene to be Seen in November, Dinner with Artists in October, January and April and For the Love of Art in March, we are actively seeking sponsors. Be featured and showcased across the associated platforms, giving your company the opportunity to speak to these exceptional audiences. For more info, contact Mary Visgilio at 239-262-6517 x115 or by email at mary.visgilio@naplesart.org. We are already booking our fabulous, art-filled facility rentals for season and there is limited availability, so we are encouraging you to get yours booked now. Contact Mary Visgilio for that too. The Naples Art Association’s primary goal is to serve as a working art center where the community can access art education, activities and events for all ages and learn about art through exhibitions and educational outreach. We encourage you to join us by investing in the arts and, in turn, in our community. We can’t wait to welcome you to the Naples Art Association. MUSIC Punta Gorda Woodstock Aug. 16-18 The Bean on 41 Coffee Shop is moving forward with plans to co-sponsor a Woodstock 50th Anniversary Weekend in Punta Gorda starting Friday, Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. The event is a three-day tribute and trip back to the magical happenings which occurred in upstate New York in August 1969. Over a dozen bands are scheduled to perform ranging from solo & duo acts up to full scale bands for the evening shows. Tiki Tom Entertainment is producing the event in collaboration with local businesses and community leaders to help bring people to Punta Gorda for a weekend of “fun and flashing-back.” “Woodstock itself came down to ‘three days of peace, love, and music,’” said Tom Watson, promoter of the event. “This is chance for all of us to reconvene, 50 years later, mind you, and remember a time when time stood still for 350,000-plus people who showed up in ’69.” “We have created a great event for August. An air-conditioned Woodstock Weekend in Punta Gorda,” Watson says. “We plan to tie in local businesses to really showcase Charlotte Harbor & Punta Gorda.” Watson says having the event air-conditioned and indoors will make it more appealing and easier to enjoy. “The cool comfort of the show is a draw of course, but what we’re most excited about is the music line-up.” The show has bands from Delray Beach, Sarasota, Vero Beach, Cape Coral and of course Charlotte County. Friday’s activities run 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday’s hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday’s activities will run 9 a.m. - 10:30 p.m. Band lineup & ticket info is at www.puntagordawoodstock.com. 32 - August 2019

Paisley Craze spreads
peace & love in Florida
The Peace & Love Tour is coming to a city near you. Paisley Craze is a five-piece band featuring special artists playing all your favorite music from the Woodstock era. Band members include Bob Dielman on guitar, Dave Mankes on keys, Kenny Crawley on drums, Marty Bednar on bass, vocalist Donna Lamoureaux and vocalist Robert Garcia. Having all come out of and through the ‘60s and ‘70s, this group of artists was inspired by the music of the ‘60s and Woodstock. They’ve cut their own records, played thousands of gigs and traveled the world. But now, they are coming together to commemorate the 50th anniversary of a moment that changed history. So whether you want to just relax, sit back, and groove to the music, or get out on the dance floor and party to the break of dawn,
come out and celebrate the music that changed the world. Doors often open early for fans to enjoy awesome pre-show festivities including Woodstock trivia, tie-dye merchandise, photo booths and more. A special Island Hopper preview party is scheduled for Aug. 8, and you can register to win free tickets by visiting www.catcountry1071.com. The special event will take place at Pinchers at The Marina at Edison Ford in downtown Fort Myers. A special performance will be given by songwriter Frank Myers. His hit songs include "I'm Already There" and "My Front Porch Looking In" recorded by Lonestar, "I Swear" recorded by John Michael Montgomery, and "You and I" recorded by Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle. Frank J. Myers is originally from Dayton, Ohio, but moved to Nashville in 1981 to pursue a career in music. He got his start in Nashville as band leader, road manager and lead guitarist for Eddy Raven in 1981 and worked with Eddy for 9 years. It was with Eddy that Frank started writing, playing and co-producing sessions. They had two number ones, five number twos and three top tens with songs such as “I Got Mexico,”
“Bayou Boys,” “You Should’ve Been Gone By Now,” “Sometimes A Lady” and many others. It was in 1982 though, that Frank had his first single (a song he wrote by himself) with “You And I” for Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle which stayed number one for four weeks Country, number two for six weeks on AC and number 6 for four weeks on pop. It was during his time with Eddy Raven that Frank met Gary Baker. They had their first number one together in 1993 with “Once Upon A Lifetime” by Alabama. Gary and Frank recorded one album for MCG/Curb Records as Baker & Myers and were three-time nominees for Duo of the Year at the ACM’s and CMA’s. Their greatest accomplishment as writers together came when John Michael Montgomery recorded “I Swear,” which was number one for four weeks on the country charts. Josh Ward, Lee Brice at The Ranch Concert Hall
The performance schedule is filling up this summer and fall at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers. The Sam Galloway Concert Series presents country artists Josh Ward on Aug. 17, Lee Brice on Sept. 21, Hardy on Sept. 27, the Casey Donahew Band on Oct. 5, Mitchell Tenpenny on Oct. 18, Josh Abbott Band, The Lacs & Black Stone Cherry on Nov. 16 and Randy Houser on Nov. 22. Rocker Sebastian Bach will perform as part of the concert series on Nov. 1. Other shows scheduled at The Ranch (not part of the Sam Galloway series) are Nightbird - The Ultimate Tribute Band to Stevie Nicks on Aug. 3, Creed’s Scott Stapp on Sept. 28, Billy Currington on Oct. 19 and Pig Floyd on Dec. 21. “All grit and no quit.” These are the deeply rooted words that Josh Ward lives by to an absolute fault. An anchored mindset that has led this Texas country music rising star from a drifter’s adolescence to the jeopardous game of the rodeo circuit to the punishing toil of the Texas oil fields, and on into the fickle arms of the music business. Some might argue whether it is having nine consecutive #1 hit singles in Texas under his belt that has garnered him staying power, or that he is killing it in the social media world with over 2 million views on YouTube and over 3 million streams globally on Spotify. Maybe it’s his 3 venerated album releases, or maybe because he can not only bat a full house on a 200 plus dates a year touring average, but also rope in crowds on a first time performance in an unfamiliar town. While impressive, all those distinctions can come and go in the world of music. When Lee Brice isn’t selling out arenas, writing and recording songs, or building a new brand like American Born whiskey — you’ll find him with his wife Sara, two young boys, Takoda and Ryker, and daughter,

Trulee Nanette. With more than 12 million in RIAA certified sales, Lee has achieved Gold and Platinum on every album and single released, with “A Woman Like You” reaching Double Platinum status. Gold album certifications include: Love Like Crazy, Hard2Love and I Don’t Dance. Single certifications include “I Don’t Dance” and “A Woman Like You,” with “That Don’t Sound Like You” reaching double Platinum. With well over 2 billion spins on Pandora, Lee Brice was inducted into the streaming service’s ‘Billionaires Club’ on June 8. The “Rumor” singer, who is now among the Top 25 most-streamed country artists of all time on Pandora, is only the second country artist behind Keith Urban to receive the Pandora Billionaire plaque and puts Lee in company with not only Urban, but legends including Johnny Cash and Fleetwood Mac, and pop phenoms such as John Legend. Big Loud artist Hardy grew up on classic rock in Philadelphia, Miss., a town of about 7,500 in the country setting of Neshoba County. So when fans hear the music on his four-song EP for the label, This Ole Boy, they’re getting the real deal. The songs are bold and proud, the voice is commanding and the lyrics are centered on farms, in the backwoods and mostly in America’s heartland. “I love that lifestyle, and that’s what I want to talk about,” he says unapologetically. “I’m not really a love song dude. If I’m going down that road, it’s a song like ‘This Ole Boy’ where it’s a redneck-in-love kind of thing. People that are like me, or people who still live in small towns, still love that and want to hear that. That’s why I’m who I am as an artist.” Hardy’s artistic identity is notably focused on This Ole Boy. His voice is gritty in “4×4,” soulful in the background vocals of “This Ole Boy” and edgy in the stack of Hardy harmonies in “Rednecker.” Texas music sensation Casey Donahew has painstakingly carved out an impressive niche for himself on the country music scene over the past decade, attracting a solid base of loyal fans who flock to his legendary live shows. Building his career from the ground up one show at a time, he’s managed to perform on countless stages night after night in front of thousands, topped the Texas music charts
Josh Ward several times, released four albums independently to critical acclaim, and forged a path all his own through the music scene without the aid or muscle of a major record label or power-suit management company. And the release of his latest CD, “Double Wide Dream,” may just push him to heights he never could have imagined when he first plugged in on stage at the Thirsty Armadillo bar back in Fort Worth’s Stockyards in the fall of 2002. Sebastian Philip Bierk, known professionally as Sebastian Bach, is a Canadian singer-songwriter who achieved mainstream success as front man of Skid Row from 1987 to 1996. He continues a solo career, acted on Broadway, and has made appearances in film and television. Sebastian Bach’s Nov. 1 stop in Fort Myers is part of his 30th anniversary tour in which he performs the first record “Skid Row” in its entirety. Alabama, Julio Iglesias, Marc Anthony, Sammy Hagar & ZZ Top at Hertz Arena
Officials at Hertz Arena in Estero have announced a solid schedule of concerts for the second half of 2019. They include Disturbed on Sept. 19, Julio Iglesias on Sept. 20, Alabama with special guest Don McLean on Sept. 28, Godsmack on Oct. 2, ZZ Top with Cheap Trick on Oct. 18, Sammy Hagar & The Circle with special guest Night Ranger on Nov. 2 and Marc Anthony on Nov. 24. Additionally, Hertz Arena welcomes comedian Jim Gaffigan on Dec. 29. It's been 50 years since Randy, Jeff and Teddy, left the cotton farms of Fort Payne, Alabama, to spend the summer playing
music in a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina bar called The Bowery. It is a classic American tale of rags to riches. From humble beginnings picking cotton in the fields to international stars that went on to sell 80 million albums while changing the face and sound of country music. Quality songs that have become the soundtrack for American life are the foundation for Alabama’s stellar career. Alabama introduced rock style guitars, lights, pyrotechnics and sounds to the country audience that has inspired many of today's brightest country stars including Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan.
While their music continues to stand the test of time, their numbers and stats are beyond compare. Fifty years since starting the band, Alabama has charted 43 #1 singles including 21 #1 singles in a row and have won over 179 CMA Awards, Grammy Awards, and ACM Awards. They are members of the Country Music Hall of Fame and have their own star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They are also world-class philanthropists who have raised over $250 million for charity. Hippiefest celebrates 50 anniversary of Woodstock
It's peace, love, happiness and an evening full of great music that has stood the test of time as the immensely popular Hippiefest: 50th Anniversary Woodstock Celebration with Ten Years After (“I’d Love to Change the World,” “I’m Going Home”), Big Brother and The Holding Company (“Piece of My Heart,” “Down on Me”), Vanilla Fudge (“You Keep Me Hanging On,” “Season of the Witch”), and Henry Gross (“Shannon,” “One More Time”) comes to Clearwater for one night only to the Nancy and David Bilheimer Capitol Theatre on Friday, Aug. 16 at 7:30 p.m. British blues-rock quartet Ten Years After originally consisted of Alvin Lee, guitar and vocals; Chick Churchill, keyboards; Leo Lyons, bass; and Ric Lee, drums. The group was formed in 1967. Ten Years After's U.S. breakthrough came as a result of their appearance at Woodstock, at which they played a nine-minute version of “I'm Going Home.” 44 - August 2019
Big Brother and the Holding Company is considered one of the original, first wave of great psychedelic bands that came out of San Francisco in 1965. The embryo that was to become Big Brother and the Holding Company began when Peter Albin, a 21 year old, aspiring folk blues guitarist, met Sam Andrew, a 23 year old guitarist who’d been in bands since his teens in Okinawa and had studied languages and philosophy at University of SF and the Sorbonne. With the help of their friend, future manager and concert promoter Chet Helms, Big Brother and The Holding Company was born. They auditioned several singers but it wasn’t until Chet Helms convinced Janis Joplin to come to San Francisco that the band was complete. Vanilla Fudge was one of the first American groups to infuse psychedelia into a heavy rock sound to create "psychedelic symphonic rock," an eclectic genre which would, among its many offshoots, eventually morph into heavy metal. Florida Rep buys Arcade Theatre, Bradford block and adjacent lot The Bradford building on First Street (between Lee and Hendry). Photos by Joe Dafeldecker
Florida Repertory Theatre’s leadership and Board of Directors announced it has purchased the Bradford block in downtown Fort Myers, which contains the Historic Arcade Theatre, ArtStage Studio Theatre, and other Florida Rep facilities, as well as the parking lot across Bay Street. This milestone purchase was made possible by multiple transformational gifts from a group of anonymous donors, given solely for the company to purchase the property. The acquisition secures the company’s future into its next 21 years and beyond. “For the first time in our 21-year history, we will own the theatre and the parking lot,” said Florida Rep Board chairman Marc Laviolette. “It gives us the self-determination which we never had and the opportunity to apply for grant dollars that were unavailable because we didn’t own our facility.” In addition to the theatre's two stages, other facilities, and the parking lot, the Bradford block contains 20 commercial units and 42 residential units. Florida Rep currently rents 12 of the residential units for visiting artists working at the theatre. The 110,000 square foot parking lot is essential to the theatre’s daily operations and is a significant selling point for patrons visiting downtown six nights per week during the theatre’s busy season. The acquisition of the parking lot puts the theatre in 50 - August 2019
control of its usage and ensures that no matter how downtown continues to grow, theatre patrons will always have a place to park when coming to the theatre. Florida Repertory Theatre is a 501(c)3 charitable organization, and it has set up a separate LLC with appropriate professional management to maintain, operate and oversee the acquired, non-theatre-related real estate. Talks with Bill Smith, Inc., the longtime owner of the downtown property, began in early 2019 and progressed smoothly throughout the due diligence and contracting process. “We are so pleased to be able to work with the Smith family to do this deal,” Longenhagen said. “They saw this as an opportunity to preserve not only the history of the Bradford property but also to cement Florida Repertory Theatre’s legacy as part of the cultural fabric of downtown. The Smith Family has always been a partner in Florida Rep’s success, and we are honored to take on the property and to honor their 40-year history as its owner.” The theatre’s 2019-2020 season is set to open Sept. 24 with the musical Always…Patsy Cline in the ArtStage Studio Theatre and Ken Ludwig’s The Fox on the Fairway on Oct. 29 in the Historic Arcade Theatre. Tickets and subscriptions The Bradford building at the corner of First are available at 239-332-4488 and online and Hendry streets. at www.FloridaRep.org.

Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse
With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.
