Publisher’s Spotlight

Art lives forever

Not even a pandemic can stop art from being created or displayed. Some of our area art galleries and arts organizations have found some very creative ways to showcase artists and their works during these very stressful times. It’s actually easy to socially distance yourself at an art gallery. I find the quieter an art space is, the more I can absorb, appreciate and reflect on the masterpiece in front of me. Currently, there is a unique exhibit in Naples that is being displayed and visible with social separation in mind. The apARTment exhibition opened July 23 and runs through Aug. 23. The project is a collaboration of Mercato, Live Art Naples and the United Arts Council of Collier County.

Supporting our local musicians

The national entertainment industry continues to take a huge financial hit from the COVID 19 pandemic, affecting thousands of lives on stage and back stage. In Southwest Florida, local musicians, singers and bands are trying to make ends meet and be artistically creative at the same time. With restaurants operating at limited capacities and bars and other music venues idle, it’s been tough for some local acts to get gigs. Additionally, there are many people who just are not ready to go out to public places for health and safety concerns ... but still crave live music. Continuing our long-time mission to promote local and live music, Happenings Magazine is spotlighting some local talent again in this issue. These gifted folks can be

4 - AUGUST 2020

seen live at various locations around Southwest Florida, but you can also support them virtually online through social media (via virtual concerts). And, for those who own a restaurant or need live music for a function or event, these performers are available for hire. Please take a moment and read up on some of this month’s featured talent. In future issues, we will continue to spotlight our local music scene as we have done for the past 25 years.

Future festivals

Right now, it is difficult to determine when festivals of any type will return in our region. Until we see some light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, who really knows. Now that we are five months into this situation, rescheduled events are being sidelined again. Red White and Boom (normally held on July 4th) was moved and supposed to happen Labor Day weekend, but that plan has been canceled. The Key West Songwriters Festival which usually is in May was moved to October and now that is off the books for this year. Speaking of amazing festivals, the seventh annual Island Hopper Songwriter Festival scheduled for September has been postponed to September of 2021. That’s a 10-day festival that has brought a tremendous economic stimulus to a lot of folks since it first began. Other biggies that have been canceled (so far) include Oktoberfest in Cape Coral and the Sand Sculpting Championship on Fort Myers Beach. That list will likely grow longer as we move into fall. But, we will stay optimistic. Until then, stay safe. Rock on,

Cultural Park looks ahead with cautious, creative eye

By Michael Moran Every performing arts organization in the area, and across the country, will need to make their own individual decisions about how and when to reopen given the huge impact of COVID19. For our community theaters, those decisions arrive sooner than most other arts groups, since their seasons begin in September or even August, rather than in October or November. So how will the shows go on—if indeed they do—with maximum safety for audiences, cast and crews? And how will they pull in enough money to make presenting them financially viable? For sure, we’re all in the same storm, but in different boats. Each theater leadership has, at the moment, plans in place with some variations. Beginning with the cancellation of the last three shows of our 57th season and then our canceled summer season, we instead presented some virtual performances. We’ve been doing a deep clean of the theater, far beyond the normal, and happily produced a very limited size summer camp successfully keeping our staff and theater campers safe while they discovered the merits of live theater and often for the first time. From that program we have learned new and creative ways of even social distancing stage blocking for our cast as well as the audience and still keep productions thoroughly entertaining. This season, Cultural Park will continue virtual entertainment and like other theater companies, we are also looking to possibly present some shows in outdoor venues. But beyond that, there is the question of what types of shows we can present live on stage? Community theaters like us are used to doing great big musicals with large casts and demands on technical staff, how do we keep them safe? Our 2020-21 season was set to open Sept. 10 with a largeHappenings Magazine

scale show. We are now opening with a much smaller cast musical revue. Even then, in a theater with almost 200 seats, at the mandated 50 percent occupancy, is it financially viable? Will people come? Other concerns: What to do about restrooms and volunteer ushers, who tend to be part of an older, susceptible demographic. So we have ask ourselves, though it’s possible to produce, but is it really safe? Would it be worth the risk if even one person got sick? What is the cost of entertainment? I’d suppose the same responses we see across the county hold true here, some won’t feel comfortable for a long while, some will sooner, and some will right now. I hope that enough will feel confident enough to give us a try. We realize it is impossible to guarantee we can eliminate risk of people catching the virus outside of staying at home but with our plans for reopening that are posted on our website along with continuing super sanitization of the building costumes, props limited contact with staff. We are taking every step to insure our patrons of the safety precautions when they enter Cultural Park. Our theater is daily fogged and sanitized with hospital grade disinfectant. By selling no more than 71 seats per performance we will do social distancing, with seating groups of two, three or four spaced socially distanced apart from each other. There will be temperature checks at the door; along with many other businesses in the county we do require our patrons to wear masks. There are no concessions and our main theater doors will be open for seating when the building opens to reduce the risk of infection in crowded lobby areas. We are still trying to keep as much programming as possible. Of course, plans are subject to change, things are in flux, and any information can change on a daily basis. The Cultural Park Theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd. Cape Coral. Call the box office for more information 239772-5862. Michael Moran is executive director of the Cultural Park Theatre Company. AUGUST 2020 - 7

“We are practicing social distancing at the Langdon,” executive director Sherrie Moody said about the Charlotte Players’ Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte. The community theater staged its first production since the COVID-19 shutdown, Baggage, in mid-July. Other devices in place include a half-dozen touchless soap dispensers, a pair of touchless forehead thermometers, 20 floor-distancing stickers, a half-dozen clear acrylic guard shields and nine wall-mounted hand sanitizers. ART

Outdoor exhibit at Mercato

in partnership with Live Art Naples and United Arts Council of Collier County

Mercato, a lifestyle shopping and dining destination managed and leased by Madison Marquette, announced “apARTment,” a unique art exhibit created in cooperation with Live Art Naples, an organization that fosters the development of art and music in the Naples community, and the United Arts Council of Collier County, which enriches lives and strengthens the community through the power of the arts. The gallery, on display at Mercato in Naples July 23 through Aug. 23, is located outdoors, facing the sidewalk along Strada Place (across from Z Gallerie and Tommy Bahama). Visiting the exhibit is free of charge and open to the public during the shopping center’s regular shopping hours. “Mercato is thrilled to provide a venue to celebrate and appreciate this incredibly moving series of fresh local art,” says Valerie Cope, senior marketing director at Mercato. “An outdoor exhibit is the perfect way to socially distance in a beautiful outdoor setting while enjoying a treat for the senses.” The unusual exhibit includes more than 20 works of art curated from local artists by Live Art Naples. Many of the pieces were created while the artists were selfquarantining during Florida’s stay-at-home COVID-19 order. Now, the art itself will undergo a 30-day quarantine behind plate glass windows, effectively creating an “apartment” for each piece of art as a nod to its human creators’ struggle with the coronavirus shutdowns. Aptly named, the “apARTment” art exhibit is an outdoor experience that encourages visitors to enjoy an outing in the fresh summer air. Each piece of art will feature a unique QR code; guests can scan the codes with their phones to watch short videos from each individual artist describing his or her work. Among the artists sharing their work during the exhibit are wellknown locals from Live Art Naples that include Daniel Papanikolau, Monika Bokelmann, Cath Branwood, Marie James and Doug Lackey. In an effort to offer the community an alternative to large events, including festivals and concerts, Mercato also offers live music (weather permitting) every 10 - AUGUST 2020

Cath Branwood

Daniel Papanikolau

Wednesday and Saturday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in front of Bravo! Guests are invited to stroll the royal palm-lined sidewalks and grab an iced coffee beverage from Narrative Coffee Roasters or dinner al fresco on one of Mercato’s many restaurant patios while enjoying a few songs from talented local musicians. Live Art was created in 2005 by Monika Bokelmann, Pete Gottschalk and Marie James. “Our goal is to bring attention to local art and music,” says Bokelmann. “The way we do it is by creating events in which painters and musicians work together with the public to create an all-inclusive experience.” She adds, “We have also created a space where we get together on a regular basis and where artists and musicians jam together and exchange ideas.” Designated by the State of Florida as the official local arts agency for Collier County, the United Arts Council’s mission is to enrich lives and strengthen the community through the power of the arts. The Council provides arts education to at-risk students and outreach services to those who might not otherwise have access to the arts. It also unites and promotes the local arts community by connecting arts organizations, artists, galleries, and arts educators with one another, with local audiences and tourism-related businesses. Lelsey Morrow at Davis Art Center ART

The Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center offers two beautiful art exhibitions in August. The Feminine Mystique, a solo exhibition by Lesley Morrow will be featured in the Grand Atrium. In the Capital Gallery, view the third annual Carded Miniature Masterpieces. The opening reception takes place on Friday, Aug. 7 from 6 to 10 p.m. and will be on display through Aug. 27. From the beginning of time women have always been a mystery. They are emotional beings that convey themselves in so many ways, they are a force of nature. That they can be vulnerable yet have such endurance and strength, it is evidenced in their faces every day. Artist, Lesley Morrow expresses the feminine experience, the mystique, through each brush stroke and use of color. Her paintings are bold, raw, and sensitive to the eye. She expresses the feminine experience, the mystique through contemporary portraiture that has included both celebrity and iconic women, capturing not

only the strength she sees in these women and their faces but also the chaos behind the façade. Through the body of her work, you can see a roadmap through pieces of Morrow's psyche that show you her own core strength. Currently, Lesley is an artist in residence at the Union Artist Studios in Fort Myers working in acrylic, oil, airbrush and mixed media. She has exhibited in local SW Florida galleries including the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, DAAS Gallery, Space 39, Arts For Act, the Loft, Chico’s TAGA Gallery and the Alliance for the Arts. Her work can be found in public and private collections locally and internationally. Carded Miniature Masterpieces comes back again for the third year. SBDAC called for artists of all mediums to participate. These miniature masterpieces will all be 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches in size. The origin of the modern trading card is associated with cigarette cards first issued by the US-based Allen and Ginter tobacco company in 1875. They Carded Miniature Masterpieces were the precursors of the

Lesley Morrow sports cards and other trading cards. An important influence on the ATC concept were art movements of the 20th century which advocated a more popular art: Art not for museums or auctions but from and within everyday life. The first artist trading card dates back to 1997 in Zurich and started as a collaborative cultural performance. The Artist Trading Card project builds on different traditions. Miniature art has been in existence for centuries tracing its heritage back to the illustrated manuscripts of scribes in the Far East and Europe through the Middle Ages. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District. Visit www.sbdac.com or call 239-333-1933 for more information.

Living art exhibition at DAAS Co-Op

In the month of August, DAAS CoOp Art Gallery & Gifts features a very different type of exhibition, combining the beauty of exotic plants as pieces of natural art, complemented by artworks from the talented Aaron Apsley. The show is co-hosted by the neighboring Thrifty Garden and owner Richard Molek’s amazing collection of indoor and outdoor specimens. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7 from 6 to 9:30 p.m., in conjunction with what would normally be the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through Aug. 29. Aaron Apsley is a graduate from the Savannah School of Art and Design. He became interested in botanical illustration while living in New York City. He moved to Southwest Florida since 2019. “I see them [plants] as exquisite sculptures or three-dimensional masterpieces, with their unique leafs and colors, created by nature itself.” – says Molek, who has a passion for all kinds of plants. “Some of the [plant] species are rare and very dear to me, as I have been growing them for years in my personal collection,” adds the Thrifty Garden owner, who enjoys sharing his love of plants with every visitor.

Happenings Magazine

Congruently, a social distancingconscious gathering starts at 6:30 p.m., right there at the Butterfly Estates, in the outdoor garden space nestled between DAAS Co-Op and Thrifty Garden. This space, christened Atala Wine & Beer Garden, provides a nature-inspired experience, amongst the butterflies and flowers abundant around the complex. The Atala Wine & Beer Garden is a collaborative project between the shops and a great alternative to the hustle and buzzle of other parts of downtown Fort Myers. As always, the gallery will be filled with the most beautiful inventory of art, fine crafts, apparel, sculptures, pottery and jewelry, all produced here by the member artists. In addition, all CDC recommendations are enforced during gatherings, including mandatory masks while inside the venue and a limit on the amount of guests inside. DAAS Co-Op and Thrifty Garden are located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly Estates complex in Fort Myers. The gallery’s temporary business hours are Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information about the gallery and how to become a member can be found online at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645.

The Local Showcase, debuting Saturday, Aug. 1 at Miromar Outlets, gives the public a year-round indoor location to shop their favorite local arts, crafts and handcrafted items every day. The showcase will offer an array of handmade merchandise – from paintings, fused glass, coastal crafts, woodwork, jewelry, wearable art, soap and artisan food. Vendors and products will change daily at the year-round market, the first of its kind in Southwest Florida. “Many items are custom or handmade by local artists,” said Christy Dunn, LLSN founder and CEO. “The Local Showcase supports local artists, local families and small businesses and helps to boost the local economy and circulate dollars locally.” “This is an exciting addition to Miromar Outlets’ top designer and brand name factory outlet stores and restaurants,” said Jeff Staner, vice president and general manager of Miromar Outlets. “The Local Showcase provides an incredible opportunity for our arts community and patrons interested in supporting local artisans. It’s the only arts and crafts market I know of in Southwest Florida that’s opened daily year round.” Displays will be spaced to promote

social distancing. The Aug. 1 grand opening of the Local Showcase is fully reserved with 30 vendors. “We’ve been attracting artists from Sarasota, Punta Gorda and as far away as Daytona,” Dunn said. “Consumers want to support local artists. They want that personal touch – it’s been a national trend.” Located next to Columbia Sportswear and across from H&M, the Local Showcase is opened during Miromar Outlets’ temporary new hours: Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m. The Local Showcase will also sponsor painting and art-themed workshops, a free self-defense class and seasonal fairs such as fall and Christmas events including a gingerbread house decorating contest. Also planned is a self-defense class and the Sept. 19 Woofstock, a dog-friendly festival offering workshops, demonstrations and an adopt-a-thon. Artists and vendors interested in reserving space can contact Dunn at LLSN@comcast.net. Miromar Outlets is located at 10801 Corkscrew Road, exit 123 off I75 in Estero. Additionally, there are many people who just don’t want to go out to public places for health and safety concerns ... but still crave live music. Continuing our long-time mission to promote local and live music, Happenings Magazine is spotlighting some local talent. These gifted folks can be seen live at various locations around SW Florida, but you can also support them virtually online through social media (via virtual concerts). And, for those who own a restaurant or need live music for a function or event, these performers are available for hire.

Keefe Klug

Formerly of the pop band Charlie Moon, Keefe Klug and his style of music have found a home in SW Florida for nearly eight years. In that time, he made a name for himself with his clever and concise songwriting style. Currently he is blending his pop background with what can best be described as the Keefe Klug photo by Brian Teitz "beach country" stylings of the gulf coast. He recently released his first solo single "Fifty Eagles" on all major streaming platforms to overwhelmingly positive responses. Keefe Klug currently resides in Cape Coral and can be found at various venues throughout Southwest Florida.
