Publisher’s Spotlight
Summer theatre
Growing up in a small rural community in Ohio, I looked forward to my summers. It was when our local community theatre group would put on a big musical production. My late father was one of the driving forces behind that community theatre group, and I never missed an opportunity to get involved as his young apprentice. His specialty was lighting design and marketing. Boy, could he light up a school auditorium stage and make it look professional. And when it came to selling tickets to the big show, no one could out do my father. He walked the streets and asked small shop owners to hang the show poster in their window. He’d find financial sponsors to help defray the production costs. And of course, he put in many hours of sweat equity to make the production a success. (He was not alone, but he was a great example of leadership.) At a very early age (around 7 or 8), I found myself involved in musical theatre .. both on stage and off. It took me a few decades before I figured out that I prefer the production side of theatre more so than the performance side. My high school years were very theatre heavy, so to speak. My school did three major productions every year, plus a series of one-act plays. Additionally, I sang in three different choral groups (so much so that I had the good fortune to travel to Europe twice to perform). In college, my theatre experience was short lived. That’s when I spent more time in bar bands singing hard rock songs or running my own little production company to assist other local bands. Years after college, I continued to sing in my church choir and help with sound and lights for that same small community theatre group that I first did back in 1970. Fast forward to today. I co-own an entertainment magazine that covers theatre and live music. I get to photograph national artists when they per-

form live in concert. And I am one of several sound engineers at our local church. I speak of all of this for two reasons. One, I am very blessed to have all these experiences for nearly six decades. But, I also share my little story with you to emphasize the importance of the arts and the influence on a person. If my dad had not allowed me the opportunity to experience stage theatre, I probably would not be where I am today. It is that small introduction (without any pressure) that exposed me to a whole new world of creativity and excitement. It is because of the early exposure that I chose my profession, my hobbies and my lifestyle. My life is full of blessings, and I am very grateful for my family and the community around me. I do not want to go without mentioning my late mother and her artistic influence on my life. Before getting married, she studied voice with a Juilliard professor. I always tell people that she gave up a professional singing career to be a mom. She had a golden voice and perhaps I inherited a small fraction of that singing talent. She never took leading roles in our local community theatre. She preferred to be part of the ensemble. But you could always hear her beautful voice over everyone else. As I write this month’s column, I am preparing to fly to New Jersey to bury the ashes of both my parents in an old family cemetery plot. It is at this time why I reflect on the enormous influence a parent can have on a child (or an adult). My parents never forced me into a certain vocation or occupational path, and I never pushed my own children. But, it is important to expose our offspring to as many aspects of the arts as we can, so they can discover what is inside of them and what they can become. Rock on,
Jamie

The Parking Lot by Adam Szymkowicz Directed by Madelaine Weymouth Dec. 8 – 18
J and Terry are married, but they might not stay that way for long. While most couples have the benefit of negotiating the ups and downs of marriage in private, or in therapy, J and Terry have taken a different approach. Instead they have chosen a parking lot as the setting to answer one of life’s biggest questions: Should we get divorced? The show stars Rachel Endrizzi and Ken Quiricone. Note this performance takes place outside in the parking lot. Ticket holders should bring their own chairs and coolers. In the event of inclement weather, they will reach out to you to either refund or reschedule the viewing.

Set in an illegal underground nightclub in a city where all public social gatherings and all forms of art have been banned, a performance artist risks arrest to perform for the first (and last time) in front of his dying mother. With nothing but props, a microphone and a bottle of cognac, the performance artist holds nothing back because this show is unlike any other that he has performed. Derek Lively is a veteran of the New York stage, but happily calls Southwest Florida his home. is thrilled to be back at Theatre Conspiracy. Previous performances at the Alliance for the Arts include King in King Hedley II, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in The Mountaintop, Frederick Douglass in The Agitators, Walter Lee Younger in A Raisin in the Sun and Canewell in Seven Guitars.
The Hatmakerʼs Wife by Lauren Yee Directed by Carmen Crussard March 16 – 26
August Wilsonʼs The Piano Lesson Directed by Sonya McCarter Oct. 20 – 29
The Piano Lesson, set in 1936 Pittsburgh, focuses on the conflicting wills of brother and sister, Boy Willie and Berniece, regarding their family’s most important heirloom, a piano. But this is no ordinary piano as it contains intricate carvings by their great-grandfather depicting the many struggles in their family history. The piano was originally owned by the slave owners of their family, with carvings of their great-grandmother, grandfather, and the likeness of their whole family tree. Boy Willie wants to sell the piano to purchase a parcel of land in Mississippi, a piece of the very land on which his ancestors had been slaves. This would allow him to finally achieve his dream of making a living farming his own property. But Berniece holds strong, viewing the piano as an integral reminder of where they came from, who they are now, and as a legacy for their future generations. This complex play filled with subplots conveys tremendous significance as it examines slavery and the difficulty of black Americans seeking economic and social equality.
The Last Show Written & Performed by Derek Lively Directed by Bill Taylor Feb. 16 – 26
Faceless by Selina Fillinger Directed by Miguel Cintron Jan. 19 - 29
On her way to Syria, Susie Glenn, a Caucasian 18-year-old from the Chicago suburbs, is arrested and charged with terrorism. Susie had been radicalized online resulting in her conversion to Islam. How does that even happen? That’s exactly what prosecuting attorney Claire Fathi, a Harvard-educated Muslim, would like to know. This courtroom drama delves into the many facets involved in this true story as it examines how Susie found herself engaged to an ISIS fighter through social media and believing wholeheartedly in radical Islam. It also examines the complex feelings of Claire, who wonders what right Susie has to profess herself as a true Muslim, along with knowing she herself is being used as a token in the prosecution of this case.
The expression, “if these walls could talk,” comes true for a young woman who moves into an old home with her boyfriend. Expecting to be happy living together, the couple find it less than ideal and soon the woman hears a wall speaking to her and begins receiving notes. It appears the wall wants to help this couple by sharing the story of two former residents, a hatmaker and his wife. The hatmaker is upset about the loss of his favorite hat, oh as well as his long-suffering wife leaving him after decades of marriage. But there’s a reason for this bizarre communication and stories about true love never get old. This play will have you believing in the possibility of transcending worlds where love and family will always remain the most important aspects of life. Season subscriptions range from $112 per person for four shows, $125 for five shows and $144 per person for all six shows. Flex passes are also available. Individual ticket prices are $30, $13 for students or $25 for Alliance members. Textile art of Kasara Castell Whelan DAAS CO-OP ART GALLERY & GIFTS
In August, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the art of textile artist Kasara Castell Whelan. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 5 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through Sunday, Aug. 28. Castell Whelan is an Artist feltmaker and a Texture lover. She is a member of the NEFG (Northeast Feltmaker Guild) and has a background in art and sales. She has a degree in Etching (Aguafuerte) and Textile Design. The artist has been living and working in USA for 22 years, finally settling in Southwest Florida. After organizing Peru and India exhibitions back in birth country of Argentina, Castell Whelan discovered her true rooted passion for Tapestries. From weaving to felting and recently paper, she plugged herself to find ways to express her emotions and love through this style of art. Her life wasn’t exactly a path of
roses, as she explains; finding ways to learn new techniques wasn't an easy task. Most of the art the artist displays is self-taught and created via hours of trial and error. “I've been fortunate to take lessons from great teachers throughout my life that have truly impacted my learning in a positive way and helped guide my development when life took sudden turns,” says the artist, who also has an avid interest in reading and learning about old civilizations and their mystics ways. “Learning how they [old civilizations] viewed life hundreds of years ago, the circumstances they faced and the knowledge they passed on to generations to come are topics that constantly inspire me to create new art that is normally concealed in my work,” says Castell Whelan. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly Estates complex in downtown Fort Myers. The gallery’s business hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information about the venue can be found at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239590-8645. 12 - AUGUST 2022

Arts for ACT Gallery in downtown Fort Myers presents the art of Rodney Acosta in August. Rodney Acosta has been drawing and painting since he was 14 years old. He graduated from the San Juan School of Fine Arts obtaining a bachelor’s degree in visual arts. Acosta's works are mostly mixed media on canvas or board. He has also produced several sculptures in steel and wood. His technique consists of extreme light contrasts, heavy textures, scratching over layers of oil, and adding found objects and textiles. In this collection, Acosta aims not at imitating reality as it is but at exploring the world of the subconscious the realm of dreams; where images don't
necessary make sense. The inexplicable place where objects as characters from distant eras and places play together, as if they existed on the same period or place. The mysterious esoteric symbolism that evokes an idea or a period of our lives or our most lucid dreams. His pieces often take you to an abandoned, but beautiful place that were ignored in between relevant events, but are now understood. This exhibit continues through Monday, Aug. 29. ON THE MAGAZINE COVER: “Gardenia” by Dianna Willman
Aliperti’s journey in clay began back in 1969 after he saw a program on American Indian pottery. The next year Rick took classes at a pottery studio, purchased some equipment, began
showing his work at art fairs and started teaching classes. His passion for the craft continued over the years even as he worked full-time in a business career. Now retired, Rick and his wife Margaret run The Pottery Court from their house located adjacent to MaryJane’s Preserve, a gopher tortoise preserve they own in Cape Coral. Rick’s work spans a wide range of clay ware: burnished pit fired blackware, sculptured whistles, tiles, specialty plates and wheel thrown pots. Aliperti plans to include, in this library display, some work created by his students at the Cape Coral Art Center in the hope of encouraging people to “experience the magic of working with clay.” Changing art exhibits are sponsored by the Friends of Cape Coral Library. SIDNEY & BERNE DAVIS ART CENTER
Artsemble Underground, Juli Bobman exhibits
The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center announces two art exhibitions opening at Art Walk on Friday, Aug. 5. Imagine, featuring Artsemble Underground, will be on display in the downstairs Grand Atrium of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Upstairs in the Capital Gallery, an exhibit titled MoonWomb-Bloom by Juli Bobman will be featured. Artsemble Underground was created by Cesar Aguilera and Brian Weaver in an effort to bring art to everyone: art for the people. Brian and Cesar have collaborated with different artists and organizations since 2014. Together, they wanted to forge an allimmersive multimedia assembly and experience of art and life, where concepts could be replicated anywhere, and not necessarily inside four walls, which sometimes hinder the creative process and final output. Additionally, Artsemble Underground gives up-and-coming artists a platform to take their art to the next level in their creative paths, with the idea that artists united can reach higher levels, enabling them to use art as an instrument of social change instead of a commodity. Artsemble’s motto is “If you can imagine it, we can create it,” and for the last few years, Artsemble has been working non-stop using that motto to transform not only Southwest Florida, but wherever art and color are needed, bringing people's imaginations to life, no matter how crazy the idea! For this exhibition, Artsemble Underground presents some of their projects in the community, working with organizations like Cape Coral Art Center, Goodwill, I Will Mentorship Foundation, Sunpeaks Center for Art and Sustainability, Johnson & Johnson, and Sidecar Treats. Some functional art like chairs and tables, traditional art, and other private projects will also be on display. Guest artists that have collaborated with Artsemble Underground through the years will be included as well. Cesar Aguilera, originally from Quito, Ecuador, has been a well known staple in the SWFL art scene. In 2015, he received the Gulfshore Life Emerging Arts Leader award. He is the art curator of the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center’s Grand Atrium and Capital Gallery. In 2011 Cesar created Paionia, a wearable art brand focused on using discarded materials, mostly computer parts and discarded technology, in an effort to create a sustainable consciousness in what we 16 - AUGUST 2022

wear. He serves as a board member for Love Your Rebellion. Brian Weaver attended the School of Communication Arts in North Carolina, graduating with a degree in graphic design and computer animation. He moved to Cape Coral in 2013 and produced the monthly art festival All Walks of Art at Dolphin Key Resort in the same year. In 2014, the Fort Myers’ River District Alliance commissioned him to develop Mystery Walk for 6 months. Brian also spearheaded “The Epicenter,” an empty warehouse transformed into an artist hub, where artists
Juli Bobman
would get together to work and get inspired. Upstairs in the Capital Gallery, Juli Bobman offers up an exhibition entitled Moon-Womb-Bloom. Her unique body of work includes watercolor, charcoal, acrylics and oils, all mediums treated differently. Moon-Womb-Bloom expresses phases in a woman’s life in comparison to the phases of the Moon, inspired by the Divine Feminine aspect of God, and fascinated by shapes in nature that repeat themselves across species. As the owner of a life drawing studio, random conversations with models/muses gave birth to the inspiration of this show. What started out as fascination with anatomy bloomed into bigger ideas about nature, spirituality and mysticism. Juli Bobman grew up in Fort Myers and graduated from the Ringling College of Art and Design. Juli worked as a jewelry designer and fabricator for many years before settling down to marry and grow a family. Adding to the enjoyment at Art Walk on Aug. 5, the music of DJ Selecta AJ will be featured on the rooftop at Sidney’s Rooftop Sculpture Garden. Both galleries are open for viewing Aug. 5 - 26. Opening night for both exhibitions will be Aug. 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District. Blues challenge Aug. 21
The Southwest Florida Blues Society and Cape Cabaret will be partnering on Sunday, Aug. 21 to present the Annual Southwest Florida Regional I.B.C. For the winners, it will manifest into a bucket-list opportunity, which is a historic engagement setting them squarely on the road to Memphis and the International Blues Challenge. This competition is for bands and solo/duo musicians who are interested in a higher level of regional, national and international recognition. There is also a youth showcase category, that provides our younger artists (members under 21 during the Memphis IBC) with an opportunity to perform in Memphis during the Youth Showcase event. In large part it’s the who’s who of upcoming blues talent that you’ll want to keep an eye on. This event can create a scenario where the winners will be in a better position to negotiate new gigs by adding to their recognition and marketability. This opportunity could even lead to signing with a major record label or gaining the recognition needed to work with some of the industry’s leading agents, promoters and producers. Winning the (Southwest Florida Blues Society) Regional IBC and then later competing at the “IBC” in Memphis could provide you with some if not all of the options we just described above. There are hundreds of bands that com-
pete worldwide every year for this opportunity and you can only get there when you’ve been selected by a Blues Foundation Affiliate Member to compete. Right now is a great time to be a blues band and a blues fan here in Southwest Florida. Opportunities like the IBC only come by once a year and only in specific locations. This will undoubtedly be a day to remember with all of our best entertainers in one location competing for a chance to go to the I.B.C. in Memphis and represent SW Florida blues fans. Cash prizes are always awarded to our regional winners, to help offset their travel expenses to Memphis. Fans are encouraged to come and vote, for a “people’s choice winner” which garners a trophy and local bragging rights for the following year. So come out and vote for your favorite band. There will be blues society shirts, raffles and giveaways just to provide a short preview of what you can expect. Blues musicians have already started to register for this amazing competition and you can be assured you’ll get a fantastic day of music. This can quickly become a standing room only event, so attendees are encouraged to come early as seating is on a first come basis. Mark your calendars and get to Cape Cabaret early for a day of top notch blues entertainment, cold beverages and some mouthwatering food.
The 2021 regional IBC winner in SW Florida was Randy Stephens and The Groovemakers. Happenings Magazine is again a partner of this annual event. Cape Cabaret is located at 4725 Vincennes Blvd. in Cape Coral. Call 239-549-3000. The Aug. 21 event starts at noon and the music runs 1 - 6 p.m. Complete details and registration forms are online at www.SWFBS.org just follow the “Regional IBC” navigation link.
Seminole Casino Hotel presents Chris MacDonald’s Memories of Elvis
Chris MacDonald performs Aug. 13 at the casino.
18 - AUGUST 2022
Chris MacDonald’s Memories of Elvis in Concert tribute to the King of Rock and Roll comes to Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee Saturday, Aug. 13 at 8 p.m. with gates opening at 7 p.m. Chris MacDonald is the star and creator of Chris MacDonald's Memories of Elvis in Concert, a national touring full-production, multimedia tribute, complete with a dynamic band and singers. With the ultimate honor of being the only tribute artist hired by Elvis Presley Enterprises to perform at Graceland’s Heartbreak Hotel, MacDonald draws his audience in with the look, sounds and nuances that made Elvis the King. The show is not a parody or an overdone impersonation; rather, there is a true understanding of what Elvis did best, connecting with his music and the heart of his audience. It is a natural, heartfelt tribute to an
American icon and his music. As an accomplished and experienced entertainer, MacDonald has performed in Vegas and Branson, and with the famous Legends in Concert stage productions. He has also headlined with Elvis' own original back up group, the Jordanaires and D.J. Fontana, at the worldrenowned Hard Rock Live Concert Arena. Through highlights and music from several stages of Elvis Presley’s iconic career – including the early years, the movies, the black leather 1968 comeback, and the white fringe 1970 Vegas concerts – MacDonald shares the incredible story and unforgettable memories of the shy, humble, country boy who became the King of Rock and Roll. Tickets are now on sale for $49 and are available by phone at 1-800-514-ETIX or online at www.moreinparadise.com. Happenings Magazine

ACMA: Dana Cooper Aug. 6
Singer-songwriter circle every first and third Sunday
The Americana Community Music Association welcomes Dana Cooper in concert on Saturday, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. Dana Cooper is a poetic songwriter, an insightful storyteller, and a rousing musician whose performances engage and inspire audiences around the world. Cooper’s lifelong passion & devotion to music began at age 2 in Kansas City. His father, George, was a huge influence. One of Dana's earliest memories is of his father taking him to the Calico Cat, popping a coin in the jukebox and listening to Dana sing along with Hank Williams & Ernest Tubb. At age 20 a move to LA resulted in a record deal with Elektra Records where he recorded his first album with members of “The Section” Russ Kunkel and Leleand Sklar, as well as other luminary players Jim Horn, Al Perkins, Jim Gordon, Joe Osborne, and Lee Holdridge. This album still wins accolades today and was recently reissued on the Warner/Japan label. After several years in California and a year recording in Seattle, Cooper moved to Texas where he wrote and performed with Shake
Russell. They released several independent albums and one album for Southcoast/MCA. Dana formed his own experimental bands, DC3, and Nuclear Family and released his first solo project Complicated Stuff. In 1988 he moved to Nashville, TN to pursue his songwriting career collaborating with other songwriters. Cooper’s songs have been recorded by a variety of artists such as bluegrass singer Claire Lynch, Irish vocalist Maura O’Connell, Nashville songbird Jonell Mosser, as well as songwriters Pierce Pettis and Susan Werner. His incredible catalogue and musical sensibilities have led to endorsements from AirPlay Direct and Elixir Strings. Dana's new 2022 CD, "I Can Face the Truth" will be available. Pick up an autographed copy. Houseboat Jim Visone will open that night. Jim is long time member of the ACMA. Jim is a wonderful songwriter who has been performing for years. You may have caught him in Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Here he is still going strong Door donations for the Aug. 6 concert are $12 for members and $18 for non-members.
