Aprojectinthemakingformorethantwoyears,sheisa magnificentworkofartinspiredbyDr.VeronicaShoemaker andthemanywomenfromthecommunitythathaveworked tirelesslytoadvancethecommunityanditsresidents.

ThisworkwascommissionedbyFortMyersCommunity RedevelopmentAgencyanditintendstopayhomagetothe leadershipofthewomenthathaveservedtheDunbarcommunity.It’sacollaborationwiththecity’spublicartcommittee andtheLeeCountyBlackHistorySociety.

TheartistCeciliaLuezaisfromSt.Petersburg.ShepaintedthepieceinearlyJulywhenweatherallowed.

TheCityofFortMyersPublicArtCommitteeissueda nationalcalltoartistsaroundSeptemberof2021,forapublic artworktobeinstalledinapublicspacecreatedonthesouth sideofDr.MartinLutherKing,Jr.BoulevardandthesouthboundlanesofVeronicaS.ShoemakerBoulevard.

ThePublicArtCommitteereviewed100artistsandselectedthreefinaliststosubmitproposals.CeciliaLuezawas selectedasoneofthreefinalistsandsubmittedadesignproposal,schematicdesignandbudgetwhichwasapprovedby thePublicArtCommittee.

JourneyofHopeisafree-standingsculpture,composedof twomainpieces,oneistheprofileofanAfricanAmerican womanlookingupwithyearninganddeterminationinher eyesasawaytosymbolizehopeanddreamsofabetter future.Thesecondsculptureisinspiredbyasunburstthat symbolizesthearrivalofanewdaywherejustice,equality andfreedomwillprevail.

TheCommunityDevelopmentAgency(CRA)provided funding($98,500)forthedesign,execution,fabricationand installationoftheartworkonthesite.ArtistCeciliaLuezaof ArtProjects,Inc.inSt.Petersburg,istoperformallservices andfurnishallsupplies,materials,and/orequipmentnecessaryforthedesignandfabricationoftheartwork,according tocitypublicrecords.
