Publisher’s Spotlight

Live theatre continues

As rough as the pandemic has been on our local arts scene, many theatre groups have been getting creative and doing live or streamed performances. After a setback in November, Cultural Park Theater in Cape Coral plans to return to the stage Dec. 16 - Dec. 20 with its annual Spectacular Christmas Revue. The Broadway Palm has opened another new show on its main stage. Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn runs now through Dec. 26. That show will be followed by the musical Happy Days playing Dec. 31 through Feb. 14. In Naples, TheatreZone is returning to the stage for the first time in many months. It’s new Show Stopper Series kicks off Dec. 11 - 13 with Merry Manilow. The Charlotte Players will present the Best Christmas Pageant Ever Dec. 2 - Dec. 6 at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte. After months of being shut down, the Off Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers reopened in mid November. The Great American Trailer Park Christmas Musical runs now through Dec. 26. The Alliance for the Arts has another production on its outdoor stage in December. Parallel Lives will be staged on select dates Dec. 3 - 12. In Naples, The Studio Players are at it again with Circle Mirror Transformation Nov. 27 - Dec. 13 at the Golden Gate Community Center. The Naples Players continue their outdoor and socially distanced performances with It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play Dec. 19 at Cambier Park. You can catch the performance in person or by live stream. The Laboratory Theater of Florida resumes its virtual performances in December when it presents The Eight: Reindeer Monologues Dec. 11, 19 and 20. Also in November, we did see Florida Rep and the FSW Theatre Dept. do shows on outdoor stages.

Southwest Florida on national TV again

As many of you know, we have some very talented musicians and singers here in Southwest Florida. And guess what, another area artist has landed on NBC television’s The Voice. Ben Allen of Estero is currently battling it out on The Voice. Originally part of Blake Shelton’s team, Ben Allen was saved after losing a “battle” and joined Team Gwen Stefani. As of press time for the magazine, Ben was still in the competition. Win or lose, Ben Allen is very talented, and we are extremely proud to call him one of our own. You can catch Ben Allen in person when he plays the New Year’s Eve Outdoor Extravaganza at Coconut Falls Tiki Bar and Grill in south Fort Myers. He is not the first from SW Florida to be on The Voice. At least two other locals (that I’m aware of) have made it to the televised rounds. They are Casey Weston of Naples and Sheena Brook of Fort Myers Beach. Both of those very talented ladies continue to perform on local stages.

Merry Manilow will feature holiday favorites and chart-topping hit songs from legendary performer Barry Manilow. With special guest Mark Danni on drums, the concert will include songs from Manilow’s holiday albums, as well as hits from throughout his 50 plus year career. “Barry Manilow has been one of the biggest entertaining influences for both Karen (Danni) and I since we saw him live on Broadway in 1989,” said Danni. “Audiences who appreciate his talent will enjoy this evening of his holiday favorites, romantic ballads and heartfelt music.”

Audiences will enjoy a mix of chart toppers, favorites and holiday hits from legendary performer Barry Manilow, one of the world’s most beloved entertainers. With special guest Mark Danni on drums, the concert will feature songs and medleys from Manilow’s four holiday albums, as well as hits from throughout his 50+-year career, including “White Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland,” “There’s Always Tomorrow,” “Mandy,” “I Can’t Smile Without You,” “Marshmallow World,” “Christmas is Just Around the Corner” and many more. The Showstopper Series also includes Bravo Broadway! At The Movies; Those Were the Days and The Best of Bacharach. Bravo Broadway!, to be presented Jan. 7 - 17, will feature Broadway’s classic hits from throughout its many decades, in addition to songs from the 2000s. This concert event will include hit songs such as the Academy Awardwinning “The Way We Were” from the Happenings Magazine

1973 romantic drama, “Moon River” from the romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and “Arthur’s Theme” from the comedy Arthur, as well as some disco hits from the 1977 American dance drama Saturday Night Fever. The fourth Showstopper Series event, Those Were the Days, will be presented March 4 - 14. This fun show, sponsored by Stock Development, takes the audience on a journey through the 1950s, ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The talented cast will not only perform hit songs through the decades, but also an entertaining television theme show medley for an unforgettable evening of fun. The Best of Bacharach, the fifth and final event of the Showstopper Series, will be held April 15 - 25. This show will take audiences back to this legendary composer’s most prolific time, the 1960s and ‘70s, when music was a common thread that kept everyone sane. “One of the reasons we chose to bring Burt Bacharach’s music to our audiences with this show is because of the nostalgia we feel when we hear these songs and they put smiles on all our faces,“ said Danni. “We hope audiences will enjoy remembering and appreciating these wonderfully crafted songs once again.” In order to safely resume indoor live performances, TheatreZone has instituted reopening Happenings Magazine

guidelines for all areas of operations for the safety of the audience and performers. These guidelines, which are available on TheatreZone’s website, provide specific line-item mandates for all areas of operations, from stage doors, back of house, restrooms, common areas, dressing rooms, hair and make-up, to front of house (including our box office, ushers and volunteers). For example, TheatreZone’s audiences will be limited to a maximum of 108 patrons per performance, and masks will be required throughout the duration of each performance. Doors will open 45 minutes prior to show time and there will be no intermissions during concerts this season, which aids in social distancing by reducing foot traffic in and around the theatre. In the theatre, air conditioning units are now equipped with hospital-grade filters and increased fresh air intake to aide in circulation and sanitation. Showstopper Series performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees on weekends. Tickets range from $50 $65 with premium seats available at $85. Mark your calendar for Dec. 2 - 6, when the Charlotte Players presents its holiday show, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte. “If you want some Christmas spirit, this show will deliver,” said Jessie Reter-Choate, who is directing the large cast of this delightful comedy. Rehearsals are under way with the cast of mostly kids and a few adults. The Players instituted COVID-19 precautions throughout its office and theater. Stage manager Jan Weston takes the actors’ temperatures upon arrival at the rehearsal hall, and the cast wears face coverings during rehearsal. (They will wear face shields for the play.) “Working with young people is such a delight,” said the director. “Their energy is so contagious on stage.” The Best Christmas Pageant Ever 8 - DECEMBER 2020

Parallel Lives on outdoor stage at Alliance

Live theatre returns outdoors and with social distancing at the Alliance for the Arts. They’ve been hard at work to create an intimate, open-air venue where our neighbors can safely enjoy live entertainment. Reserve your square for Kathy and Mo now. This has all of the right ingredients to make you laugh the night away. In the opening scene, two Supreme Beings plan the beginning of the world with the relish of two slightly sadistic suburban wives decorating a living room. Once they’ve decided on the color scheme of the races, a little concerned that white people will feel slighted being such a boring color, they create sex and the sexes. Afraid women will have too many advantages, the Beings decide to make childbirth painful and to give men enormous egos as compensation. From this moment, the audience is whisked through the outrageous universe of Kathy and Mo, where two actresses play men and women struggling through the common rituals of modern life.

With boundless humor, Parallel Lives re-examines the ongoing quest to find parity and love in a contest handicapped by capricious gods—or in this case, goddesses. Performances are Dec. 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. For safety reasons, all tickets must be purchased in advanced. Seating is limited and attendees will purchase a pass for a 6 X 6 square space on the GreenMarket lawn. The Alliance for the Arts is located at 10091 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. The explosive movie musical bursts onto the live concert stage at Baker Park! When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. But he’s not prepared for

the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, who is determined to exercise control over the town’s youth. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. 20 X 20 Exposed at DAAS Co-Op ART

DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is inaugurating a new invitational exhibition in December featuring the art of Southwest Florida creatives who seek to express their thoughts of the year 2020. The exhibition’s prospectus challenged artists to put the year 2020 in pictorial expression, in 20 inch by 20 inch canvases, of course. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with Fort Myers Art Walk. The collective will be on display through Jan. 2, 2021. The concept of the 20 x 20 Exposed exhibition came from conversations regarding the many ups and downs of this year. For some, the year 2020 represents an array of devastating circumstances, social issues and economic crisis, among others. The COVID-19 pandemic has marked many lives with the loss of over 200,000 Americans due to

who see the current times as a way to restore, regroup and reorganize many aspects of their environment. “We are looking forward to the show and to see how these artists interpreted the theme,” says DAAS Co-Op cofounder, artist and curator David Acevedo. “I hope it serves as a way for artists to let go of the negative aspects of this year and heal. We need to look past this year to a brighter future,” adds Acevedo. The gallery invites all Southwest Florida art collectors, supporters and enthusiasts to join them for the opening reception in the evening of Dec. 4. DAAS CO-OP Art Gallery & Gifts is located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly Estates complex in Fort Myers. The gallery’s temporary business hours are Thursday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information about the gallery and how to become a member can be found at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645.

Rachel Pierce exhibit at Davis Art Center

The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is celebrating local celebrity Rachel Pierce with her Ocean Treasures art collection. Meet Rachel Pierce at the opening reception Friday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 10 p.m. Many will recognize Rachel Pierce as a long-time TV journalist, yet what they may not know is she has recently shifted all her focus to her artwork. A daughter of the Midwest, she grew up in the small town of Chippewa Falls, Wisc., and now calls Southwest Florida her home. After serving her communities as a journalist for 19 years, Rachel transitioned into art in a very unexpected way. As a popular local celebrity, she emceed dozens of events each year. During one event she was asked to be a celebrity painter and so graciously created a piece to auction off to benefit the non-profit. Everyone was surprised by her talent, and soon other people began requesting her to paint something for their organization’s fundraisers as well. That’s when the numerous commissions started to take form. Within a year of selling her first painting the hobby became a

second career, selling dozens of pieces and donating dozens more. A few months later, she decided to make art her job, leaving TV news. Rachel’s Ocean Treasures collection focuses on the wonder found in our local waters and draws one’s attention to the fantastic creatures that are all around us. Rachel Pierce is constantly inspired by our beautiful location on this planet. The South Florida region is a playground for colorful flowers, amazing birds, and unique sea creatures. Rachel’s realistic sea turtles, fish, dolphins, manatees, and octopus subjects come to life on her modern flowing backdrops. Her use of bright colors seeks to share the emotions of joy that Rachel feels when she paints. The exhibit runs through Dec. 21. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic down-

town Fort Myers River District. Rachel Pierce will also offer art demos and an art talk at 2 and 6 p.m. (upstairs in The Capital Gallery) on Saturday Dec. 5 during the Festival of Trees. For more info call 239-333-1933 or visit the website at www.sbdac.com

New mural to feature Punta Gorda Army Air Field

The Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society announced the start of its next mural. It will present the history of the Punta Gorda Army Air Field built in Punta Gorda in 1943. The air field was used from February 1944 to September 1945 to train an estimated 750 U.S. pilots for WWII. The Army Air Corps staffed the facility with 44 officers and 1,097 enlisted men and had over 100 aircraft on the ground. Training ended on Sept. 1, 1945, one day before the Japanese surrendered. The facility was active for a total of 1 year, 8 months and 22 days. In 2002, the Mural Society painted a mural featuring the historic air field on three walls at the Charlotte County Airport (now the Punta Gorda Airport). Unfortunately, the mural was lost in 2004, a victim of Hurricane Charley. Now 16 years later, the society is eager to capture this important history once again, this time on a newly

ArtistĘźs rendering of new mural constructed wall in Veterans Park on Nesbit Street in Punta Gorda. The society has acclaimed Florida mural artist Keith Goodson creating this mural, the 31st for the Society. Keith Goodson was born in Cocoa Beach, where his father was stationed at the U.S. Air Force Base. His family lived at the Avon Park Bombing Range for several

years and his father is currently the Range Ops controller for the base. Growing up in a military family, the theme of this mural is especially meaningful for Keith. Keith currently lives in Lake Alfred and has painted murals for towns across Florida; most notably 19 murals in Lake Placid, as well as ones in Titusville, Lake City, and Avon Park. In addition, he has worked for major companies like Universal Studios, Disney, and Sea World as an artist and consultant. Painting will start the week of Dec. 7, and Keith estimates it will take about two weeks to complete. The society invites all to stop by Veterans Park to welcome him to town and watch this special mural come to life. Progress photos will be posted online at www.puntagordamurals.org and the mural society’s Facebook page.

Magritte: Reflections of Another World comprises six paintings — five oils and one gouache — by Belgian artist René Magritte painted between 1932 and 1956 that are on a five-year loan to Artis–Naples. These works have never previously been shown in North America, and none have exhibited publicly in over 48 years. Parties of two to four patrons will be provided chairs within their own 6foot grid on the lawn, face masks will be required, hand sanitizing stations will be available, and direct person-to-person contact will be kept at a minimum. To buy tickets, go to the website and sign up for the wait list. More details are available at www.PGSymphony.org. “Obviously, we have to stay nimble in case the pandemic takes a serious turn for the worse,” assures Badinger. “But our partnership with FSW is making this work easier. We are staying optimistic and we’re excited to be moving forward!” Meanwhile, Maestro Ponti’s popular Behind the Notes lecture series will be livestreamed online and made available free of charge to all patrons. Ponti will host and interview audience-favorite guest artists and Punta Gorda Symphony musicians alike, ending with an extensive question-and-answer session. Over the series, audiences will revisit with pianist Terrance Wilson from February 2019, violinist David Kim from January Happenings Magazine

2020, and composer Kenneth Fuchs from March 2020; they will recognize longtime Punta Gorda Symphony percussionist Dean Anderson, bassist Laurence Glazener, and harpist Richard “Dickie” Fleisher. “We want audience engagement with these livestreams,” explains Ponti, so he has chosen an online platform that allows anyone watching to type questions to the moderator. “By now, we’ve all spent a lot of time just sitting and watching our screens – so we’re giving you a good reason to be involved!” Scheduling for Behind the Notes began in November. The next livestream lecture is planned for Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. Further details will be available on the website at www.PGSymphony.org. “Like so many other organizations, everything we do this season is an experiment,” says Badinger. “The effects of this pandemic have challenged everyone’s resilience. But we’re a tight community, and we’re aiming to provide a welcome respite for our folks. And if things go swimmingly, we’ll be able to add more programming!” For further details about Punta Gorda Symphony, visit online at www.PGSymphony.org. DECEMBER 2020 - 37

Gulfshore Opera is celebrating the holidays with a Renaissance inspired Christmas concert in costume with a candlelight procession in Bonita Springs, Naples, and Punta Gorda. These three concerts feature GO Divas, Gulfshore Opera’s newest, all female group comprised of six beautiful young ladies with degrees in classical voice. The GO Divas will perform Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols written in 1942 for a three-part treble choir. The work consists of 11 movements based on Christmas carols from the 15th century. The Divas will also perform familiar early carols like “Lo How a Rose Ere Blooming,” “Coventry Carol” and “A Very Merry Madrigal.” The first of the these three concerts will be an open air concert as a part of the Opera al Fresco Series. 40 - DECEMBER 2020

The GO Divas made their debut in November at Mercato in Naples and Carmelo’s Italian Ristorante in Punta Gorda. Their concert, performing a variety of vocal ensembles with rich harmonies, was warmly received. The GO Divas include Lauren Davis, mezzo-soprano; Lydia Howery, alto; Lauryn Kay, mezzo-soprano; Daniela Magura, mezzo-soprano; Erika Ramirez, soprano; and Marie Talley, soprano. TheatreZone prepares for 2021 concert series

TheatreZone’s 2020-21 Concert Series has been updated and includes one-of-akind performances local audiences will thoroughly enjoy. The season includes the return of the extremely popular Mersey Beatles, who have sold out shows the past three seasons at TheatreZone, as well as four great new shows: Simon & Garfunkel: Live in Central Park, revisited; The Feud: Sinatra & Roselli, Two Guys from Hoboken; Sinatra…my way; Mack is Back: The Music of Bobby Darin. Simon & Garfunkel: Live in Central Park, revisited will be presented on Jan. 18 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. “My friend Lee Lessack has recreated this great concert around the country to sold-out audiences,” said TheatreZone’s Mark Danni, “and we’re proud to present it on our stage on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.” The Feud: Sinatra & Roselli, Two Guys from Hoboken, The Story & The Music will be presented on Jan. 23 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Told by Dennis DelleFave, Jimmy Roslli’s cousin and road manager, this concert focuses on the personal and professional rivalries between Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Roselli, two great singers who lived on the same block in

Hoboken, NJ. The Feud’s got it all: the great Sinatra songbook, Italian songs that Roselli made famous, and much more from the ‘40s through the ‘70s. Sinatra…my way will be presented on Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. “Larry Alexander who has appeared on Broadway in Les Miserables and is a TheatreZone fan favorite, is back on our stage for this exciting concert,” said Danni. Though yet unconfirmed, rumor has it that the orchestra will include a special guest drummer who has performed on Broadway for such smash shows as Chicago, Les Miserables, Grand Hotel and Miss Saigon

Fan favorite The Mersey Beatles will perform its “Favorites of Naples” show on Feb. 16 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Like the original Fab Four, The Mersey Beatles are a band from the great city of Liverpool. They are childhood friends who share a love of Beatles music. The “Favorites of Naples” show will include Beatles hits spanning 40 plus years, with special emphasis on the songs TheatreZone’s audience fondly espouses. Mack is Back: The Music of Bobby Darin & More will be presented on Feb. 18 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Grammy Award-winning American singer, songwriter, multiinstrumentalist, film and television actor: there’s not much the talented Bobby Darin couldn’t do. Born Walden Robert Cassotto, the self-taught Darin could play several instruments, including piano, drums, and guitar, by the time he was a teenager, later adding harmonica and xylophone. Enjoy this special trip through his iconic career, with music spanning genres and generations. For tickets, visit www.theatre.zone or call 888-966-3352 x1. TheatreZone is located at 13274 Livingston Rd., Naples, in-residence at G&L Theatre on the Community School of Naples campus.

ZZ’s Best tribute band

Happenings Magazine

This month, Happenings Magazine turns the spotlight on another Southwest Florida band. ZZ’s Best is a tribute to the iconic band ZZ Top. The sound, the look and production pays homage to one of Americas favorite rock bands. ZZ’s Best plays all over the country and occasionally plays here in Southwest Florida for special events. ZZ’s Best is scheduled to play Jan. 9 at Cape Cabaret, 4725 Vincennes Blvd. in Cape Coral. For tickets, call 239-549-3000 or visit www.apecabaret.com. ZZ's Best has been a project in the works for many years. The band originally started out as just another cover band playing the SW Florida scene, but as the band got tight they began to open some pretty big doors sharing the stage with

some major groups such as: Styx, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mountain, Greg Allman, Rick Derringer, Grand Funk Railroad, Edgar Winter and many other notable names in the industry. This power trio was quickly getting a name for itself and the fan base grew dramatically. Ten years later, the original founders of that group are back together and doing ZZ's Best. ZZ's Best will make you feel like you're part of the real thing with all the big hits being performed by this powerful and talented threesome of players. Members of ZZ’s Best include Eric Ellis (aka Rev. Southwest Ellis) on guitar and vocals, Rick Martin on drums and Paul “PJ” Jennings (aka Rusty Grille) on bass and vocals. To follow the band, visit their website at www.ZZsBest.com or on Facebook at #ZZsBest.

Blues series at Coconut Falls Tiki

The weekly blues concert series on Sundays continues in December at Coconut Falls Tiki Bar and Grill in Fort Myers. This month’s lineup includes Sean Chambers, Mike Zito and a special guest on Dec. 6. Nick Schneblen is scheduled for Dec. 13. On Dec. 20, Josh Rowand The Pitbull of Blues is scheduled to play, and the day will include a birthday celebration for Den Rowland. The month wraps up with the Mark Telesca Band on Dec. 27. All four shows run Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 with $5 off your entree purchase. Sean Chambers Florida born Sean Chambers began his career in the blues back in 1998 when he toured with the legendary Hubert Sumlin as his guitarist and band leader until 2003. During Sean’s tenure with Mr. Sumlin, Britain's own Guitarist magazine named Chambers as “One of the top 50 blues guitarists of the last century.” In 2009, Chambers went into the studio to record his critically-acclaimed album “Ten Til Midnight.” In 2018, Sean Chambers released his 7th album “Welcome To My Blues” on American Showplace Music.

Mark Telesca - Dec. 27 Happenings Magazine

Mike Zito He may be one of the most lauded artists in the contemporary blues arena today, and rightfully so, but for Mike Zito, the thing that counts the most is maintaining his honesty, authenticity and integrity. Those are the qualities that have steered Zito’s career since the beginning and continue to define every effort he’s offered since. “I have nothing to hide; it seems my honesty is what people relate to most,” he once told Vintage Guitar magazine. “Anders (Osborne) told me early on, ‘If you don’t believe what you’re singing, you’ll never be a good singer.’ I try not to write fluff; I try to make every word count.” Nick Schneblen One of the first things you discover about Nick Schneblen is his commitment to his music. He does not tippy-toe or wade in; he plunges right into the deep end. Forceful and determined succinctly describe Nick’s approach to guitar-playing and singing. That’s always been the basis for Nick’s music, no matter what kind of musical collaboration he’s been in. “I like things that are very potent and simple,” he says. “They get straight to the point.” Nick came to widespread attention as a member of Trampled Under Foot, the Kansas City family band that was founded in 2004 won the 2008 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Nick was also singled out for the “Albert King Award” as the best guitarist in the competition. Josh Rowand Josh Rowand is an electrifying master of his guitar. He allows the guitar to come alive and speak to his audience as he shows just how a guitar wants to be played with his energized soulful rendition of the blues. It has been said that Josh is a "Silent Conductor" and he demonstrates this while on stage with only his guitar or while performing with his band. Josh was honored to perform in Montreal Canada at the 2012 Montreal International Jazz Festival, where

he laid down his own breed of blues and was rewarded with an overwhelming response from the audience as well as outstanding comments from a Canadian Reporter where Josh’s music and impressive slide guitar work was compared with George Thorogood and Johnny Winter. Mark Telesca Mark Telesca started off 2020 with a new solo acoustic CD titled “ Higher Vibrations” along with a new book titled “Love Music-Hate Cancer” “Higher Vibrations” is a collection of 16 songs. Nine original songs composed by Mark. The remaining seven songs are a mix of Pre-WWII blues and spirituals. His finger style guitar playing and storytelling lyrics combined with his powerful vocal seems to be the perfect combination for making a strong connection with his listeners. Coconut Falls Tiki Bar and Grill is located at 17200 S. Tamiami Trail in Fort Myers. For more information, call 239-9909901, visit online at www.coconutfalls.com or follow them on Facebook.

Fort Myers history lives on in Dean Park, which was founded by Rhode Island businessman John Morgan Dean and once was the home to many well-known local figures: the two founds of the Robb & Stucky furniture store, Harry Stucky, clothing store owner M. “Flossie” Hill, legendary hardware

store owner Edward Evans, Judge George Whitehurst, beloved local physicians Dr. Gordon Henry and Dr. William H. Grace, steamship captain Neil “Bo Gator” Storter and many others, including a lively collection of entrepreneurs riding the 1920s Florida real estate boom. The historic district had originally planned to celebrate its centennial on March 28, 2020, with a historic house tour featuring the interiors of 10 private Dean

Park homes. However, due the coronavirus, this house tour was first postponed, then later canceled. Home styles include numerous bungalows and craftsman homes, the English Arts & Crafts cottage of Virgil Robb, the Tudor revival home of Harry Stucky, several Spanish revival homes, Florida vernacular homes and the Art Deco-influenced apartment building of Fort Myers Mayor Frank A. Whitney. Many early residents lived in Dean Park throughout their lives while others, as they became more successful and their families expanded, moved from the smaller bungalows in Dean Park to the more commodious homes along McGregor Boulevard. Just one mile east of downtown Fort Myers, Dean Park was designated as a historic district in 1997 and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. The walking tour map and more information on all Dean Park houses is available at www.deanpark.org. Fort Myers Woman’s Community FORT MYERS RIVER DISTRICT

Club Holiday House Dec. 9 - 20

Do you wanna find a snow man in Southwest Florida? Then be sure to not miss “Winter Wonderland,” the 64th Annual Holiday House, presented by the Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club. Dazzling decor in spectacular hues of turquoise, pale aqua, silver, and white, accented with sparkle, provide the backdrop in your search for the elusive snowman in each designer-inspired room. Every year since 1956, hundreds of members and volunteers of the Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club spend hours planning creative designs to transform the interior and exterior of the Langford-Kingston and Burroughs homes, including the lawns, gardens, and grounds, into magical displays of holiday design and décor. “Holiday House is a wonderful tradition our members take great delight in sharing with our community each year,” said Natalie Van Horn, 2020 Holiday House chair. “This year has been especially hard for so many in our community because of the ongoing pandemic, and we are hopeful ‘Winter Wonderland’ will fill our guests with sparkly and joyful holiday cheer.” Holiday House 2020 will open Wednesday, Dec. 9, offering self-guided tours through Sunday, Dec. 20. The hours are 5 to 9 p.m., with the last tour guests admitted at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults. Children under age 10 are free. Veterans and active military service members are admitted free with identification. Advance tickets are on sale now and may be purchased through the Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club website at www.fmwcc.net. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. The Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club will observe CDC guidance to safely present Holiday House 2020. Masks (covering both the nose and the mouth) are required for entry and touring the homes. Indoor tours are limited to firstfloor rooms only. Directional signage must be followed to ensure social distancing and one-way flow through each home. Hand sanitizer stations will be located throughout the tour. Regrettably, Santa must remain at the North Pole to stay safe before the big night. 50 - DECEMBER 2020

Opening hours and activities subject to change based on COVID-19 guidance. The Historic Langford-Kingston Home and Burroughs Home are located in downtown Fort Myers at the corner of First Street and Fowler Street.

The club members will see you on the porch to extend a warm “Welcome to Holiday House”… a Fort Myers tradition since 1956, presented by the Fort Myers Woman’s Community Club. Visit www.fmwcc.net for tickets. Happenings Magazine
