JamieLynn Bucci, Robert Ball and Mark Vanagas in the Naples Playersʼ Charles Ives Take Me Home.
THE NAPLES PLAYERS
Charles Ives Take Me Home
The Naples Players present Jessica Dickey’s poignant and eloquent ode to fathers and daughters, Charles Ives Take Me Home, with performances now through Feb. 11. Whether the relationship between a father and daughter is nonexistent or reminiscent of Atticus Finch and Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, that relationship will prove to be one of the most profound of both of their lives. Charles Ives Take Me Home eloquently guides us through the lives of John Starr (Mark Vanagas), a talented concert violinist and his equally gifted athlete daughter Laura (JamieLynn Bucci). Throughout their lives John Starr’s love of music and his daughter Laura’s passion for basketball are at odds, but thankfully they have the spirit of modernist composer Charles Ives (Robert Ball) to play referee. “It’s impossible to experience this beautiful story without being touched in some way,” said director Jessica Walck, TNP’s associate artistic director. Walck is known for her acclaimed direction of the thought provoking and moving These Shining Lives in TNP’s 2017 season. “Having a father is something universal to all of us and yet we have so few opportu-

nities through the arts to reflect on how truly life-changing that relationship is for us. Whether we are rebelling against them or yearning for their admiration, they shape who we are. That is something worth exploring, and Charles Ives Take Me Home does that with exceptional fluency.” Charles Ives Take Me Home is a story told with a lightness that will have you laughing at one moment and moved in another, but it is one that will stay with you long after you leave the theatre. That may be because stories about father-daughter relationships are sparse or it may be Dickey’s gift for storytelling that includes using music to tell a story, and in this case the music of modernist composer Charles Ives. Ive’s passion for music and ability to perceive what exists between the obvious is the perfect addition to Dickey’s storytelling. Fathers impact their daughters lives as much through words unsaid than those expressed. A lifetime filled with the complex push and pull of John and Laura’s relationship, is articulated fluidly through the cadence of the dribbling of a basketball and the sometimes soothing and other times energizing or agitating sound of the violin.
Charles Ives musical compositions, though completely unique and unlike any of his time are considered some of the most important musical influences in the 20th century. Perhaps that is why Dickey included Ives music in this deeply layered play. His music was complex, sometimes confusing but in the end profoundly influential, just like the father-daughter relationship of John and Laura Starr explored in Charles Ives Take Me Home. "One thing I am certain of is that, if I have done anything good in music, it was, first, because of my father, and second, because of my wife," said Ives. This heartfelt ode to father and daughters is a celebration of joy, family, art, love and what it means to be home. Charles Ives Take Me Home is a play to be experienced by all and if possible, shared with those who have had a meaningful influence on your life. Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for subscribers and $10 for students and educators. Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. For tickets and more information visit www.naplesplayers.org or call (239) 2637990.

CULTURAL PARK THEATER
Hithcock, Elvis in Cape Coral
By Michael Moran The 39 Steps, adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow, runs at Cultural Park Theater Feb. 9 through Feb. 18. This fast paced melodrama is based on the novel by John Buchan and the 1935 movie by Alfred Hitchcock. The local production is being directed by Tyler Young. The 39 Steps will have performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. As to the story, well … mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theater. A man with a boring life meets a mysterious woman with a thick accent who tells him she is a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale. This two-time Tony and Drama Desk Awardwinning treat is packed with non-stop laughs, an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, good old-fashioned romance and over 150 zany characters, played by a cast of four. The 39 Steps provides an unforgettable evening of pure pleasure. The cast includes returnees to the Cultural Park Stage: David Rode, Caroline Farrell, Jennifer Dube and welcoming newcomer Arika Shuck. Lighting and sound design by Robert Barnes. Stage management by Chloe Cuyler
who will be assisted by Peyton McCarthy. Be sure to reserve your tickets early, especially for the Sunday matinees, while there are still seats available. Next in our concert season, David Morin has been getting audiences all shook up for the past ten years. The ambitious performer who impersonates Elvis Presley first got enamored with Elvis at age four. “I’m from Martinique and the only thing I had in my room was a record player with some Elvis records,” Morin recalled. “French was my first language so I didn’t understand the words I was singing. I just knew that I loved it.” Morin has performed at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and screen legend Connie Francis has even come to his show a few times. “Performing as Elvis was never something I forced. The moves came naturally to me. I watch Elvis movies all the time and I’m a big fan of his but I never really studied him and then looked at myself in the mirror. Elvis was so smooth. Impersonating him has to be smooth too.” Morin’s costumes are all custom made and in addition to frequent concerts in South Florida, he’s traveled to Chicago, Kentucky and Memphis doing 22 shows a month. David will be on stage at Cultural Park Theater Feb. 23, 24 and 25 with Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday performances at 3 p.m. The Cultural Park Theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd., Cape Coral. Broadway series tickets are $21 for adults, $18 for seniors and children, students and group rates are available. All concert tickets are $21. Call the box office at 239-772-5862 for reservations. GULFSHORE PLAYHOUSE
The Price on stage to Feb. 4 in Naples Marilee Talkington and Jeffrey Binder in The Price.
Gulfshore Playhouse presents Arthur Miller’s The Price at The Norris Center in Naples. Starring Jeffrey Binder, David Whalen, Stuart Zagnit, Marilee Talkington and directed by Kristen Coury, Gulfshore Playhouse’s founder and producing artistic director, The Price plays now through Feb. 4. In The Price, Miller – the consummate voice of the American experience – examines how in order to move forward, one must make peace with the past. The play is set in an old, memory-filled Manhattan brownstone attic that becomes the staging ground for conflict between past and present, success and failure, and obligation and choice when two estranged brothers, Victor (Binder) and Walter (Whalen), return to their childhood home after 30 years. The New York Times has called The Price Miller’s best play. A Tony Award-winning playwright, Miller is also known as one of the leading figures in 20th-century American theatre, and was the creator of Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, and A View from the Bridge. A 15-year Broadway veteran, Binder’s New York credits include Zazu in Disney’s The Lion King and George Banks in the hit musical Mary Poppins, both performed 22 - February 2018

Katherine Oni, Dede Brownlee, Judith Gangi Santos and Bonnie Knapp in Rapture, Blister, Burn in Naples Feb. 7 through March 4.
Rapture, Blister, Burn
on Sugden stage in Naples The Naples Players present Gina Gionfriddo’s smart and scathing Rapture, Blister, Burn with performances Feb. 7 through March 4 in TNP’s Tobye Studio. Directed by Mary Masterman, Rapture, Blister, Burn is about marriage, equality and the choices women make and later choose to remake. After grad school, Catherine (Dede Brownlee) and Gwen (Judith Santos) chose polar opposite paths. Catherine built a career as a rockstar academic, while Gwen built a home with her husband Don (Bernardo Santana) and children. Decades later, unfulfilled in polar opposite ways, each woman covets the other's life, commencing a dangerous game of musical chairs— the prize being Gwen's husband. With searing insight and trademark wit, this comedy is an unflinching look at gender politics in the wake of 20th-century feminist ideals. "It's pretty rare to find a play that is both entertaining and intellectually stimulating,” said Bryce Alexander,
24 - February 2018
artistic director of The Naples Players. “Ms. Gionfriddo has provided a fabulous way to explore an issue that every generation of women has faced; choosing a career, or choosing a husband - and what happens if you try to choose both. With the recent news that young woman are choosing not to have children, the topic is more relevant than ever. We are excited for women from every generation to find a voice in this smart and funny production." Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for subscribers and $10 for students and educators. Florida Repertory Theatre’s 20th anniversary season continues with William Gibson’s hopeful and uplifting true story, The Miracle Worker, an American classic which was immortalized on the screen by Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft. The production runs in the Historic Arcade Theatre Feb. 16 through March 17 with four previews Feb. 13 - 15. "We are proud to continue our tradition of bringing an American classic to vivid new life with The Miracle Worker," said Producing artistic director Robert Cacioppo. "This play is one of the most revered true stories of perseverance and determination, and its message of hope and the tenacity of the human spirit is a timeless one we must never forget. Annie Sullivan's strength and Helen Keller's bravery helped shaped a generation, and are still a lesson to us all." This timeless American classic tells the inspiring true story of how a determined teacher was able to save young Helen Keller from her isolated silence. Just before the turn of the 20th century, desperate for help, the Keller Family hires a young woman to help their blind and mute daughter learn to communicate with the outside world. Annie Sullivan sees that Helen is more than a spoiled and violent child trapped behind a wall, and against tremendous odds, she frees Helen’s spirit and opens her mind. Made famous by the film starring Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, “The Miracle Worker” is a moving, inspirational, and electrifying story of perseverance, friendship, and hope. Florida Rep ensemble members Viki Boyle, Patricia Idlette, William McNulty and Peter Thomasson return to the Florida Rep stage in this production, and are joined by frequent guest artist Kate Hampton. Making their Florida Rep debuts are Dillon Feldman and Broadway veteran, Betsy Hogg as Annie Sullivan. George Mitchell at ACT Gallery
In February, Arts for ACT Gallery will feature photographer and author George Mitchell in the main gallery showing original photography from “Thirteen days in the summer of 1967…” in the Mississippi Hill Country. Off the main gallery in the white gallery, a duo exhibit of photography by Ollie Mack Gentry and paintings by the late Veronica Benning. Also showing will be new works from our co-op artists. George Mitchell has been making serious photographs since his senior year in high school, when he began photographing traditional blues artists he located or visited with a Kodak Instamatic camera. He began making more professional photographs in 1967, when the University of Minnesota School of Mass Communication and Journalism lent him a camera, and his wife and he went to Mississippi for the summer to record, photograph, and interview traditional blues musicians. This trip resulted in his first book, Blow My Blues Away, published by Louisiana State University Press. For several years in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was a reporter in Columbus, Georgia. Under the tutelage of the photographers at the Columbus Ledger, he took the photographs which appeared with his stories. At the Columbus Times, he was a reporter, a photographer, and later executive editor. During that period, he produced his second book of photographs and text, I'm

Somebody Important. He taught photography in Atlanta at four high schools for a total of 25 years. He also authored five more books of photographs and interviews. Mitchell also recorded blues singers for records album for more than two decades, beginning in 1961, and is one of only several people to have received two Keeping the Blues Alive awards from the Handy Foundation. Inspired by nature, humanity, architecture and the love of art, Ollie Gentry sought beauty through the lens. Gentry's images capture the essence of the whole object or being, and his lifelong passion for photography gives him an eye for the unique and historical details of everyday objects, places and people. Driven by his own love for beauty, as well as the great images by Mapplethorpe, Leibovitz and Adams, Gentry honors the intimacy of his subjects to create serene, modern photographic images without manipulation. Ollie Mack Gentry Photography is located at 2180 West First St., unit 210 in the River District. Using oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, ink and graphite, the late Veronica Ann Benning often worked from the still-life or landscape to produce her over-all color condition. Sea Grape features Kapuchinski and Ellsworth
Sea Grape Gallery will be featuring two of their artists, Susan Kapuchinski (oil painter) and Jim Ellsworth (wood turner), from Feb. 1 to March 1. Susan Kapuchinski spent many years as a decorative fine arts painter. She has traveled extensively in Europe, the Far East and South America which has inspired much of her artwork. After a one-year sabbatical in Australia, Susan and her husband moved to Punta Gorda where she focuses many of her paintings on Florida landscapes, florals and still life. Often Susan’s inspiration comes from the draJim Ellsworth matic effects of contrast in light and shadow in the inherent beauty of nature. Her primary focus is oil on canvas where she often uses photos and sketches from her many travels and the beauty of Florida’s natural environment. Susan’s art conveys a soft, romantic through realistic mood. As Susan says, “my goal in painting is to make my artwork sing.” When viewing her work, it is evident that Susan has accomplished her goal. Jim Ellsworth learned basic woodworking skills while in high school which led him to furniture making. During Jim’s working career he held various positions including a bank executive, college professor and a community leader. All through his career days, Jim continued his
hobby of making furniture. Upon retiring to Florida, he decided to focus his creative energy on the art of wood turning. He began attending classes by nationally recognized wood turners around the country and attended seminars and symposiums on various wood turning topics and techniques. Even though Jim Susan Kapuchinski produces his art in a wide range of turning styles, he especially enjoys producing segmented turnings. When viewing Jim’s creative artwork, the viewer invariably will ask, “how can such a beautiful and unusual piece of art be designed out of a piece of wood”. Many of Susan’s beautiful oil paintings and Jim’s truly unique wood pieces are prominently on display at the Sea Grape Gallery. In addition, more of their art and the artworks of all Sea Grape artists can be viewed at www.seagrapegallery.com. Sea Grape Gallery has been awarded the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce’s Special Recognition Award and has consistently won the Charlotte Sun Newspaper’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best Art Gallery. The gallery is celebrating its 30-year anniversary in 2018. Visit the gallery and its many talented award-winning artists who are on hand to welcome and assist visitors. Sea Grape Gallery is located at 113 W. Marion Avenue, Punta Gorda and can be reached at 941-575-1718. The Gallery is always open until 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month for Alive After 5.
Bill Kramer exhibit at DAAS Co-Op Gallery
Bill Kramer 28 - February 2018
In February, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts will showcase the art of member artist Bill Kramer. The exhibition, entitled Variations on Thought, is a collection of bold, colorful and large scale pieces, which were created by the artist exclusively for the event. The opening reception coincides with the monthly SoCo Second Saturday, held at the SoCo Cultural District (Alliance for the Arts and Royal Palm Square block) on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. Bill Kramer began his career as an artist later in life. “I started painting in 2003 at the age of 61,” says the artist, who has been a member of the DAAS cooperative gallery for over a year. “Today, I am 75 and my style has changed completely. My attitudes and ideas have changed, but my commitment to expressing myself with design and color will always be part of the way I live.”
The pieces in this collection are large scale, bold and vibrant. They are filled with the energy of this artist, whose age may contrast with the contemporary-abstract feel of his multi-media creations. Kramer does not sign his pieces in the front because he wants the collector to hang the piece in whatever angle they wish. Of course, he is happy to sign his pieces upon request. All art lovers and collectors are invited to join DAAS for the opening reception on Feb. 10. For more information about the gallery, visit www.daascoop.com or call 239-5908645. Hirdie Girdie features four artists Hirdie Girdie Gallery, the 15member co-op at the corner of Tarpon Bay Road and Library Way on Sanibel, is featuring the work of four of its award-winning local artists: painter Joan Tangren Reynolds, art tile artist Sue Housler, sculptor Tania Begg and watercolorist Anne Kittel. Joan Tangren Reynolds creates dramatic works in oil, watercolor, pastels and acrylics. Her subject matter is just as varied, featuring paintings that reflect her Midwestern heritage, local Florida landscapes and people involved in everyday activities. Sue Housler's artistic background includes jewelry design, painting and sculpture. She became interested in clay and Art Tile because she can continue tactile creativity, the glazing process is similar to oil painting and she can manipulate the color, depth and design of her unique pieces. Tania Begg's amazing beaded sculptures are literally climb-

But don't miss Tania's reptiles and amphibians made of semi-precious beads. Anne Kittel is a familiar face in the Fort Myers/Sanibel art community and she has a strong following for her awardwinning watercolors. Her distinctive paintings show strong design, imaginative use of color and they are always entertaining. These artists join 11 others at Hirdie Girdie to offer more original paintings, photography, wood carvings, ceramics, basketry, glass, fiber, colored pencil works and jewelry. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, see www.hirdiegirdiegallery.com or call 239-395-0027.

Pastel Society at the Alliance
The Southwest Florida Pastel Society Annual Member Show will run Feb. 5 through March 4 at the Alliance for the Arts, 10091 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. An opening reception will be held Friday, Feb. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Southwest Florida Pastel Society serving Punta Gorda to Marco Island and beyond was established in 2003 with the reviving interest in pastel made popular by the Impressionists. The group’s artists also teach and volunteer in our community and schools. Pastels are not just “pastel” in color and are not just chalk, but a creative and respected art medium lasting through the ages. Come see what the artists have to offer in this judged yearly show. There will also be a walk and talk on Feb. 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. to meet the artists and to learn more. The art will be for sale with part of the profits going to The Alliance for the Arts Fort Myers. The Southwest Florida Symphony presents Broadway Boys on Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW, located at 13350 FSW Parkway in Fort Myers. The Broadway Boys were created in June of 2005 to play a single night at a club in New York City. The overwhelming response and a packed bar forced the club to bring the boys back again for another sold out evening. Realizing that this group had serious growth potential, The Boys decided to focus and develop their product into the “symphony of sound” that they have become. The Broadway Boys is a collection of the hottest male voices currently working on the New York stage. Through their dynamic vocal prowess and redefining arrangements, the Boys add elements of pop, funk, gospel, jazz and folk to show tunes and classic pop songs. Willie Jones wraps up Jazzy Nights at Davis Art Center
Willie Jones and Friends bring their sultry jazz sound to downtown Fort Myers on Feb. 15. Experience acclaimed jazz drummer Willie Jones in an intimate setting at 8 p.m., with cocktails at 7 p.m. for the final Jazzy Nights concert of the season at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. With an unparalleled style of rhythmic expression, drummer Willie Jones III is one of the world's leading jazz drummers. In addition to honoring his monumental influences - the late greats Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey and Billy Higgins - Jones' bold articulation and constantly innovative sense of swing are results of his lifelong musical experience. Born in Los Angeles in 1968, Jones' completed his academic training after receiving a full scholarship to the California Institute of the Arts where he studied under the tutelage of the legendary Albert "Tootie" Heath. Before he was a semifinalist in the 1992 Thelonious Monk Jazz Drum Competition, Jones co-founded jazz band Black Note. Influenced by the rich soulful energy of the West Coast bop movement, Black Note's hard-swing sound propelled them to first place in the prestigious John Coltrane Young Artist Competition in 1991. Jones contributed his skillfulness as both musician and producer on all four Black Note recordings: 43rd & Degnan and L.A. Underground
(World Stage Records), Jungle Music (Columbia) and Nothin' But the Swing (Impulse!). By 1994, the band had toured Europe and across the U.S. and was the opening act for Wynton Marsalis. Near the end of 1994, while Jones was reaching for a higher level of drumming dexterity, he gained the privilege of playing sideman to the renowned vibist Milt Jackson, where Jones learned the importance of pacing and sensitivity. From 1995 through 1998, he was a member of Arturo Sandoval's band and is featured on Sandoval's Grammy Award winning release Hot House (N2K). Subsequently, Jones recorded with Horace Silver on Jazz Has a Sense of Humor (Impulse!). From 1998-2005, Jones was a member of Roy Hargrove's Quintet and is featured on Roy Hargrove's CD releases on Verve: Moment To Moment, Hard Groove, Nothing Serious and RH Factor's Distractions. Jones can be heard on a host of recordings including Kurt Elling's Grammy nominated Night Moves (Concord) and Eric Reed's Here (Max Jazz). Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 day of show. The center is located at 2301 First St. in the Fort Myers River District. For tickets, visit www.sbdac.com.

“The smaller ensembles allow the freedom for us to explore many different styles and traditions in choral music,” says Mastersingers artistic director Jeff Faux. He continues, “In this one concert, you’ll hear our children’s choir singing the simple melodies of Britten’s Friday Afternoons, hauntingly beautiful chant in Durufle’s Ubi Caritas, Thomas LaVoy celebrating Robert Burns with a Scottish-style folk tune, and the rich harmonies of Russian Orthodox music from Rachmaninoff.” The two groups come together again March 11 for the Bernstein at 100 concert at Barbara B. This large-scale production with full orchestra and over 100 singers will celebrate the centennial of one of the giants of American music, Leonard Bernstein. Gulf Coast Symphony, Broadway Palm to stage Oklahoma
The Gulf Coast Symphony and co-producer Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, staged, with full symphony orchestra, on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2 and 7 p.m. at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theater still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the highspirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful backdrop against where Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the journey to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. The Gulf Coast Symphony and Broadway
Palm Dinner Theatre’s production of Oklahoma! features an all-star cast and ensemble from the Broadway stages, as well as local favorites from Broadway Palm productions. The lead roles of Laurey and Curly will be portrayed by Siri Howard and Marc Koeck. Siri Howard has appeared on Broadway in Les Misérables covering the roles of both Fantine and Cosette, as well as The Sound of Music, covering the role of Liesl. She has been on the national tours of Parade (Iola Stover), Les Misérables 25th anniversary production, and The Sound of Music, starring Richard Chamberlain. Other performances include: Sweeney Todd Live from Lincoln Center on PBS, starring Emma Thompson, South Pacific (Nellie Forbush), Fiddler on the Roof (Hodel), A Little Night Music 25th Anniversary Production with the Philadelphia Orchestra (Fredrika), and soloist with both the Omaha Symphony and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
Marc Koeck most recently starred as Tony in two critically acclaimed productions of West Side Story at both the Asolo Repertory Theatre and The Orlando Shakespeare Theatre respectively. Other recent credits include South Pacific (The Wick Theatre), The Mystery of Edwin Drood (New London Barn Playhouse), Camelot (New Repertory Theatre), and the workshop of the musical Stars and Strikes. Other Oklahoma! cast members include Renee Albulario as Ado Annie Carnes, Jeremy Webb as Will Parker, Jason Switzer as Jud Fry, Mark Sanders as Ali Hakim, and Steve Williams as Andrew Carnes. Liz Kimball is stage director and choreographer, and Andrew M. Kurtz is music director and conductor for the production. Tickets to Oklahoma! start at $42, and are available by calling the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall box office at 239-4814849, or visit www.GulfCoastSymphony.org. Call 239-277-1700 for group reservations.

Cody Jinks, Jamey Johnson, Eric Paslay & The Outlaws
The Sam Galloway Concert Series in conjunction with Gator Country 101.9 continues with more national artists at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers in 2018. The Ranch welcomes Cody Jinks on Feb. 9. With his smooth baritone and lonesome, dark-hued country songs, the Saving Country Music Album of the Year award winner is proving that Country Music empowered by credibility has made its way to the masses. This did not happen overnight for Jinks, who has spent the better part of the last 10 years playing numerous empty bar rooms to a never ending financial loss. “Yeah, I’ve been pretty good at losing money. Not the greatest feeling in the world to be gone from home for long stretches of time, only to walk in the door broke. But I never gave up. Never even had that thought.” His latest critically-acclaimed album I’m Not The Devil smashed his Personal Chart Records, Breaking Top 5 On Billboard Country And Independent Album Charts. Pandora called I’m Not The Devil “a gift from above for country fans of all stripes.” Tickets start at $27 for Cody Jinks. Opening the show will be Ward Davis and Sunny Sweeney. Deuterman Productions presents Jamey Johnson at The Ranch Concert Hall on Feb. 23. Eleven-time Grammy-nominated singersongwriter Jamey Johnson is “one of the greatest country singers of our time,” according to the Washington Post. He is one of only a few people in the history of country music to win two Song of the Year Awards from both the CMA and ACMs. His 2008 album, That Lonesome Song, was certified platinum for 1 million in sales, and his 2010 ambitious double album, The Guitar Song, received a gold certification. In addition, he won two Song of the Year Trophies, for “Give It Away” and “In Color,” both from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. Jamey Johnson tickets start at $30. The Sam Galloway Concert Series welcomes Eric Paslay back to Happenings Magazine
The Ranch on March 23. EMI Records Nashville breakout country artist, Eric Paslay, delivers a powerful punch as a renowned, Platinumselling, hit songwriter and dynamic performer. Paslay has celebrated five No. 1 hits including “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” (Eli Young Band), “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” (Jake Owen), “Angel Eyes” (Love & Theft), “Rewind” (Rascal Flatts) and “Friday Night,” the smash lead single from his critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. The Temple, Texas native earned nominations for GRAMMY Best Country Song, ACM Song of the Year and CMA Song of The Year for “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” in 2013 and earned his first GRAMMY nomination as an artist in 2016 for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “The Driver”- a collaboration with friends Charles Kelley and Dierks Bentley. Most recently he was honored with an ACM Song of the Year nomination for “She Don’t Love You” at the 2016 ACMs in Las Vegas. Tickets for Eric Paslay start at $20. Other upcoming shows in the Sam Galloway Concert Series include The Outlaws on April 5, High Valley on April 7, Tracy Lawrence on April 21 and Colt Ford on April 27. The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community, says Brian Tidwell, general sales manager of Sam Galloway Ford. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community, Tidwell said. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. Crime, romance, nonfiction & new location for SW Florida Reading Festival March 3
More than a dozen acclaimed and best-selling authors are coming to Fort Myers to meet fans and talk about their books at the 19th annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival on Saturday, March 3 at the Fort Myers Regional Library, 2450 First St., in downtown Fort Myers. The SW Florida Reading Festival attracts popular authors for adults and children from across the country. The festival this year will relocate to the Fort Myers Regional Library due to construction surrounding the Harborside Event Center. The move also will tie the event more closely to library services and the library’s mission of promoting reading and life-long learning. The festival is a daylong event filled with author presentations, lively activities for children, the latest library technology, book signings and a free book for every child. The reading festival is the largest one-day reading festival in Florida and has been designated a “Top 20 Event in the Southeast” for the month of March by the Southeast Tourism Society. 66 - February 2018
“The festival invites popular authors to participate by sharing their real life experiences, thought processes and the evolution of their characters,” said Lee County Library System director Mindi Simon. “It is fascinating to hear how they craft their page-turner plots and tie all the details together.” The festival kicks off Friday evening, March 2, with the Evening with the Authors event at the Fort Myers Regional Library, at which authors meet and mingle with attendees. Among the award-winning authors scheduled to attend the events include adult authors Scott Turow and J.T. Ellison and children’s author Michael Hall. The complete list of authors can be found at www.ReadFest.org. The Reading Festival is free and community-supported through donations, sponsorships and grants. To help ensure the continuation of this free community event, visit www.readfest.org to make a secure online donation. Author information, directions to the event and more, is available at www.readfest.org or by calling 239-479-4636.

Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse
With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.
