THEATRE

THE NAPLES PLAYERS

Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! on stage in Naples through March 10

From local playwrights Patti Caroli, Carole Fenstermacher and Natalie King comes a show as unique as its title. Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat!, an uproarious comedy about womanhood, aging, and everything in between, is showing Feb. 14 through March 10 at Naples United Church of Christ in McSpadden Hall. No topic is off the table as these women tell it like is, and was, and should be. Through weaving humor and thought-provoking themes, Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! shows us that laughter is the best medicine through humorous and positive characters who are willing to be honest through it all. At its heart, Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! is not only a good laugh, but a treasure trove of more serious and important takeaways. Through exploring relationships, authenticity, the nature of happiness, and the power of empathy, you'll go beyond the laughter and gain a greater understanding of yourself and our world – no matter how old. “Everyone will see a little piece of themselves in this show - young, old, women, men - yes, these are topics that women in older age would discuss, but they’re things that affect all of us.” says director and playwright Carole Fenstermacher. For “people of a certain age” – whatever THAT is – the play reminds all of us of the healing power of laughter. Who could ask for more? Fenstermacher is joined by the following team of industry professionals: assistant director Marlene Strollo, scenic designer Michael Santos, lighting designer Chris Riley, sound designer Bradley Van Houten, costume designer Mollie Berman, properties coordinator Amy Hughes, stage manager Esther Snyder and assistant stage manager Victoria Duck. The cast includes (in alphabetical order) Jo Atkinson, Janie Ballurio, Beverly Canell, Patti Caroli, Marilyn Hilbert and Linda Mizeur. From Feb. 14 - March 10, performances are on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and

Theatre Conspiracy production THEATRE

to benefit Calusa Nature Center

Theatre Conspiracy at Alliance for the Arts presents The Women Who Mapped the Stars by Joyce Van Dyke and directed by Todd Sherman. The cast includes Lauren Drexler, Shelley Sanders, Ellie Appelgren, Isabella Cintron and Stacy Stauffe. Performances are Feb. 8 - 10 and Feb. 15 - 17 at 7:30 p.m., as well as Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. All performances are held at the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium, 3450 Ortiz Ave, Fort Myers, as a fundraising event. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a group of women astronomers working at the Harvard College Observatory made discoveries that changed the way we saw the universe, helping to change the role of women in science. The Women Who Mapped the Stars is the story of five remarkable

8 - FEBRUARY 2024

women, and the relay race of scientific inquiry between scientists and generations, toward ever greater light and truth.Van Dyke’s clever premise brings together five important women from two different periods in the history of the Harvard Observatory. Beginning in 1881, Willamina Flemming, Henrietta Swan Leavitt , Annie Jump Cannon and Antonia Maury were key members on the team of “computers” which was under the direc-

tion of Edward Charles Pickering. Pickering is credited with leading the Harvard Observatory during its most active years, and the brilliant women at the center of this play were labeled, sadly, members of “Pickering’s Harem.” Van Dyke’s story endeavors not only to tell this important story with accuracy and aplomb, but also to help us understand some of the science that these passionate women had mastered. The Women Who Mapped the Stars, originally commissioned by Central Square Theater with early script development assistance from The Poets' Theatre and Jessica Ernst, is the inaugural play in the Brit D'Arbeloff Women in Science Production Series. Tickets are $27 for members, $32 for non-members and $14 for students with a valid ID. Tickets are available at ArtInLee.org or by calling 239-939-2787.

Ride the Cyclone THEATRE

at Laboratory Theater of Florida

The cult classic Ride the Cyclone makes its Southwest Florida premiere Feb. 23 at The Laboratory Theater of Florida. Ride the Cyclone book, lyrics and music are written by Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell. The lives of six teenagers from a Canadian chamber choir are cut short in a freak accident aboard a roller coaster. They awake in a surreal, carnival limbo in which they compete to win a prize like no other: the chance to return to life. The modern cult classic and viral hit Ride the Cyclone will have you asking the big questions while having amusement park fun. Producing artistic director Annette Trossbach says, "This show is an explosion of talent on our stage! It's eccentric and zany with layers that peel back to reveal the deeper purpose and joy of life. The music and choreo are outstanding. One by one, the students perform to show why they should be the one to be brought back to life. The songwriting is dynamic and eclectic, with everything from European post-war cabaret to autotune rap to cheer, and why this musical is so popular today." Directed by Trossbach, Ride the Cyclone features Jania Boucher (Ocean O’Connell Rosenberg), Nick Beyor (Noel Gruber), Gabrielle Lansden (Jane Doe), Seth Balcer (Mischa Bachinski), Jonattan Declet (Ricky Potts), Brittany Ringsdore (Constance Blackwood) and Trace Meier (voice of Karnak). Music direction is by Earl Sparrow and choreography by Erica Fiore. Kaci Davis is stage manager and assistant director. Set design is by Jonathan Johnson and Gabrielle Lansden. Performance dates are Feb. 23, 24, 29 and March 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. Matinees will be presented Feb. 25, March 3, 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. Half price previews are set for Feb. 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 each or $15 for students with valid IDs. FLORIDA REP: Comedy of mistaken identities, bedroom hijinks, opera tunes & madcap delight THEATRE

Florida Repertory Theatre will stage Ken Ludwig’s A Comedy of Tenors Feb. 16 through March 3 in the Historic Arcade Theatre in downtown Fort Myers. A Comedy of Tenors takes place in 1930s Paris where arrangements for the concert of the century are underway - as long as the producer can keep the Italian opera superstar and his hot-blooded wife from causing chaos (which they always do!). Set in a lavish Parisian hotel suite, four tenors, two wives, and three girlfriends trigger mayhem of the most hilarious kind - while a soccer stadium filled with screaming fans await the arrival of opera superstar Tito Merelli. Mistaken identities, diva-sized egos, and bedroom hijinks clash in operatic proportion in this madcap sequel to Lend Me a Tenor. “We have an all-star cast leading

this hilarious production including Bradley Dean who has appeared in dozens of Broadway shows,” said producing artistic director Greg Longenhagen, “Dean will play dual roles in our production popping in and

out of character at the drop of a hat and will be joined by other fantastic singer-actors who will delight the audience with their vocals while simultaneously tickling their funny bones.” The cast features returning actors Carine Montbertrand (Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help), Jackie Schram (A Sherlock Carol) and Jeremy Sevelovitz (Million Dollar Quartet) along with New York-based actors Jesse Corbin, Bradley Dean, and Gregory North making their Florida Rep debuts, and Florida Rep acting intern, Haley Sweat, making her Arcade Theatre debut. The production will be staged in the intimate ArtStage Studio Theatre and stars the same duo of actors from Driving Miss Daisy. The Gin Game is a sharpwitted, dark comedy centered around a pair of nursing home residents who get swept away in a never-ending game of Gin. As the story unfolds, tensions and luck ebb or flow as each character reveals secrets and regrets from their lives outside the nursing home. Revelations quickly become weapons as the game transcends from a friendly competition into a mind game fueled by the emotional baggage they each carry. “We are pleased to present this Pulitzer Prize-winning American classic,” said producing artistic director Greg Longenhagen. “Coburn’s play is smart, humorous, and heart-wrenching, setting up a game of Gin as a metaphor for life.” The cast features two returning actors, ensemble Happenings Magazine

THEATRE

Grand Night for Singing at MACC Running now through Feb. 10, the Southwest Florida theatre company presents a new production of the 1994 Tony nominated A Grand Night for Singing, a fresh take on the Rodgers and Hammerstein canon, conceived by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein may never have imagined “Shall We Dance?” as a comic pas de deux for a towering beauty and her diminutive admirer, nor might they have suspected that one day a lovelorn young lad might pose the musical question, “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” But that’s precisely the kind of

invention lavished upon this new revue, with innovative musical arrangements, including a sultry Andrews Sisters-esque “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” a swingin’ “Honeybun” worthy of the Modernaires, and a jazzy “Kansas City,” proving how terrifically up-to-

Heidi Love Larraz, Cecilia Valadez at SBDAC

The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center announces two art exhibitions opening during Art Walk on Friday, Feb. 2. Where the Desert Meets the Sea by artist Heidi Love Larraz will be featured in the downstairs Grand Atrium and the show, Ella, by artist Cecilia Valadez will be on display in the upstairs Capital Gallery. Heidi is a realist artist with a slight hint of surrealism. Her work is most often inspired by the natural Heidi Love Larraz world, for it is there, in the outdoors, where she has found the majestic subjects that captivate her most. Seen in her work is the sublime power and beauty of nature, often used as metaphor. After graduating from Prescott College in 1991, Heidi began almost immediately working as an intern for the renowned sculptor and master potter, Heath Krieger whose approach to his art and teaching is rooted in Japanese tradition, focusing on constant repetition, detachment from ego, and the continual awareness of shape. Heidi’s artistic trajectory shifted into painting a decade later. She began exploring with drawing, watercolor, and oil, and eventually started studying and learning from Cuban artist Julio Larraz. For this show, Heidi brings together her impressions of two

ecosystems- the high-country deserts of Arizona and Colorado in contrast to the tropical and lush ecosystem of Florida, representing their beauty on large canvases. Cecilia is a Mexican contemporary artist living in Southwest Florida. Her paintings provide an extraordinary insight into human nature, especially women, which has been the central theme of her work. The woman as the main figure is the subject and the center of her works and is expressed in integrated textures and monochromatic tones. In these forms of expression, she evokes extraordinary visions and transitions of life as the main inspiration, influenced and touched by the new life that she chose to live. Opening night for both exhibits will be Feb. 2 from 6 to 10 p.m. including music under the stars at Sidney’s Rooftop featuring the Kelly Neff Band from 7 to 11 p.m. Both exhibitions will be on display through Feb. 23. Deb Zwetsch & Zan Lombardo collaborate for Alliance exhibit

The Alliance for the Arts invites the public to its opening art reception for We Contain Multitudes on Feb. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. The free event features works by both Deb Zwetsch and Zan Lombardo. Light refreshments will be provided. Deb Zwetsch and Zan Lombardo built a relationship as collaborative artists to specifically create the works for this show. They have “channeled multitudes” together, harnessing watercolor paints and liquid silk dyes to create works of imbibition. Elusive skunk apes peer between the trunks of pines, saw palmettos and bald cypress trees. A veritable yearbook of character portraits of local mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects is juxtaposed with a litany of leftovers from the trauma of Hurricane Ian. The moon in all its phases is featured as it influences all creatures and phenomena of the natural world. Human figures wear the silken skins of other beings as they interact with them, whether that be listening to the choruses of frogs in the rain, considering the fecundity of a rookery, facing the imposing mass of a brown bear, darting from the silver spears of

mullet schools, or gasping at a graceful nest of snakes. The artists show them embodied, not separate. “Collaboration is not to be undertaken by the weak or faint of heart,” both artists said in a statement for the exhibition. “Collaborative struggle has required enormous amounts of flexibility and integrity. The result is concrete, visible evidence that channeling the creation together is possible. The artists’ intentions are for their artworks to embrace this resplendence and acknowledge that life is overwhelmingly abundant and well worth their effort, laughter, and tears. They remind us to be humble and to keep expanding out into the universe.” John Rizza will be featured in the theatre gallery. The member gallery will showcase the students of Terry Lynn Spry. She has been a dedicated painting instructor at the Alliance for the Arts for several years. Receptions are open to the public and do not require tickets or reservations. While gallery admission is free, a $5 suggested donation keeps AFTA programming affordable and accessible. Call 239-939-2787 for details. The exhibits will be on view from Feb. 2 - 24 at 10091 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. Visit artinlee.org for more info.

Gumbo Fest Feb. 4 at Shell Factory MUSIC

Shell Factory and Nature Park will hold its 22nd annual Gumbo Fest on Sunday, Feb. 4. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is free. Live entertainment will be provided by headliner Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers, and The Porch Dogs will perform. Dwayne (Dopsie) Rubin hails from one of the most influential Zydeco families in the world. Although inspired by tradition, Dwayne has developed his own high energy style that defies existing stereotypes and blazes a refreshingly distinct path for 21st century Zydeco music. This singer/songwriter and accordionist has performed all over the world since debuting his band, Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, at age 19. The Louisiana native writes both the lyrics and music for his songs and

describes the upcoming album as soulful with a touch of blues and old time zydeco feel. Dopsie grew up in Lafayette, La., teaching himself how to play accordion watching videos of his father and Clifton

Chenier and recording himself with a video camera and going back and watch it and playing over and over for hours until it was right. The knowledge of Dwayne’s musical ability along with Zydeco Hellraisers band members are combined to have over 100 years of experience playing Zydeco music and it shows in every performance. The energy, true talent, and exuberance that Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers emit from stage makes it obvious that there is no competition for this band. Not only has Dwayne’s band mastered zydeco music, but he’s a twotime Grammy nominee 2012-2018. Admission is free. The Shell Factory and Nature Park is located at 16554 N. Opera Naples, led by artistic director Ramón Tebar, announces #30DaysofOpera, featuring accessible opera including free performances, in-school programming, educational workshops and the fully staged Iolanthe, the whimsical comic opera by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. #30DaysofOpera events started Jan. 20 and lead up to the 2024 Festival Under the Stars, a spectacular multi-day outdoor opera festival that will feature international opera stars in famed staged productions. Iolanthe will be presented at Wang Opera Center on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe boasts a clever combination of romance, humor, political satire, and the memorable musical numbers that have made Gilbert and Sullivan household names. Iolanthe features the Opera Naples resident artists in the lead roles. Tickets start at $39. 2024 Festival Under the Stars runs Feb. 29 through March 10 and includes events at Cambier Park, Wang Opera Center, both in Naples, and St. Leo Catholic Church (Bonita Springs). The festival includes two evenings with the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation, personally hosted by Nicoletta Pavarotti, which celebrate the legacy of Luciano Pavarotti. Expect to be mesmerized by world-renowned opera artists, such as Marcelo Álvarez, Gregory Kunde, Jennifer Rowley in “Madama Butterfly,” and

local favorite Jeanette Donatti. We pay tribute to the great Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini on the 100th anniversary of his passing with our fully staged Madama Butterfly. Several performances will have a Latin flair as part of the ¡ARTE VIVA! Annual Mrs. Edison’s Hymm

Sing scheduled for Feb. 6

Celebrate the Edison Festival of Light and help feed the hungry by attending Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing Tuesday, Feb. 6 at The First Presbyterian Church in downtown Fort Myers at the corner of Second Street and Lee Street. It’s the 34th anniversary of the hymn sing, which is an official sanctioned event of the Edison Festival of Light. Sponsors are the Galloway Family of Dealerships and Susan Bennett Marketing & Media. Because of the overwhelming popularity of the event, two performances are planned at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The doors will open 30 minutes prior to each performance. Admission is free, but because of the increased need for food for the hungry, organizers are requesting that those who attend bring cans of non-perishable food and a voluntary cash donation, if possible, to benefit Sam’s Community Kitchen & Cafe of Community Cooperative. “We need to help The Soup Kitchen by donating as much canned goods and cash as we can to help families who most need it in our

community,” said the Rev. Dr. Paul deJong of First Presbyterian Church. “The need has never been greater with so many people struggling after the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian. The food that is donated will go immediately to those in our community who desperately need it,” said Dr. deJong. Cash donations are especially valuable because Community Cooperative can buy five times as much food for the same amount of money that residents spend at local grocery stores. “However, there is great satisfaction in contributing a tangible item you know will be a blessing to someone in need. Both forms of donations will do good work in our community and will be most welcomed,” said Dr. deJong. This year’s event will feature the First Presbyterian Sanctuary Choir and many other singers, along with a piano-organ combination. For more information or directions to the church, call 239-334-2261 or visit www.fpcfortmyers.org. For more info about Community Cooperative, call 239-332-SOUP or visit communitycooperative.com.
