Publisher’s Spotlight New year, new look
You probably noticed that your copy of Happenings Magazine looks and feels a little different this month. After 22 years, we have changed from a tabloid format to a magazine size and changed our design a little bit inside. This new size will make it easier for you, our readers, to carry us around, as well as help us continue to grow our readership by adding locations where you can pick us up each month. We already have 530 locations, but we need more. This transition was not an easy one, to say the least, and doing it over the holidays didn’t help matters. We have been contemplating the size change for quite some time, and we were even encouraged to do so by some of our readers and our partners. Well, we have a new look, and we hope you like it.

THEATRE
TheatreZone begins lucky 13th season in Naples
TheatreZone enters its lucky season 13 with the 1930s musical Me and My Girl, a love story filled with ballads and tap dancing. The show runs Jan. 11 through Jan. 21 at the G & L Theatre in Naples. “It’s a fun way to kick off season,” says TheatreZone founding artistic director Mark Danni, a veteran of Broadway, Off Broadway and national tours. Me and My Girl won three of 11 Tony Award nominations when it ran on Broadway in 1986. The show also won five Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Book and Outstanding Music. It is known for songs including "Leaning on a Lamp Post" and "The Lambeth Walk." In the plot, the late Viscount Hareford had a youthful, unfortunate marriage – and, kept discreetly out of sight, was a son and heir, Bill Snibson. The Hareford Hall family are despondent when the family solicitor finds the legitimate heir in the less than desirable Lambeth area of London. When Bill is brought to Hampshire, he is forced to decide if he should fit in with high society and lose his Cockney roots and his girlfriend. Other main stage shows in TheatreZone’s season include The Secret Garden playing Feb. 8 – 18, Barry Manilow’s Tropacabana March 8 – 18 and Baby April 26 through May 6. This enchanting classic of children's literature is re-imagined in brilliant musical style in The Secret Garden. Orphaned in India, 11-year-old Mary Lennox returns to Yorkshire to live with her embittered, reclusive uncle Archibald and his invalid son, Colin. The estate's many wonders include a magic garden which beckons the children with haunting melodies and 6 - January 2018
spirits from Mary's past, who guide her through her new life. With sensational originality and splashy production numbers, Barry Manilow's Copacabana will leave you breathless. Tony is a bartender who falls in love with Lola and helps her become a Copa girl. Lola also attracts the amorous attentions of Rico, who goes too far, abducting Lola and taking her to his rival nightclub in Havana. Tony and the whole Copacabana crew set off to rescue Lola! Danni says, “We presented this show in our fourth season, and it was very well received because of its high energy and costumes. We’re bringing it back so more people can see it. And, how can you go wrong with Barry Manilow?” Is there anything more exciting, frightening and utterly transformational than impending parenthood? In the musical Baby, three couples at various stages of life deal with the painful, rewarding and agonizingly funny consequences of the universal experience of pregnancy and upcoming parenthood. Danni says, “This was one of the first shows we did, in year two, when we offered only four performances. It’s a funny and touching story with a fantastic musical score,” says Danni. TheatreZone hires professional actors from across the country to perform. Almost 200 auditioned for this year’s shows, which include The Secret Garden and Baby. Tickets for Me and My Girl range from $50 to $75 and may be purchased at www.theatrezone-florida.com or by calling the box office at 239-424-9500. TheatreZone performs in the G&L Theatre on the Community School of Naples campus, 13275 Livingston Road, Naples.
Noises Off on Sanibel BIG ARTS
BIG ARTS continues its theatre season in 2018 with Noises Off Jan. 12 through Feb. 17 at the Strauss Theater on Sanibel. Called “the funniest farce ever written, Noises Off presents a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called Nothing’s On. Doors slamming, on and off stage intrigue, and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play. Noises Off has become a staple of both professional theatre companies and community theatres on both sides of the Atlantic. Noises Off appeared on Broadway in November 2001 starring Patti LuPone, Peter Gallagher, Faith Prince, T. R. Knight, and Katie Finneran. The production was nominated for a Tony and Drama Desk Award as Best Revival of a Play, and Finneran was named Best Featured Actress by both groups. BIG ARTS theatre season also includes Dames at Sea March 8 through April 7 and Grounded April 11 - 21. Dames at Sea tells the story of Ruby, who steps off a bus from Utah and into her first Broadway show. But hours before the opening night curtain is set to rise, the cast learns that their theater is being demolished. With the help of some adoring sailors, Ruby and the cast set a plan in motion to perform the show on a naval battleship. From the award-winning playwright of Elephant’s Graveyard, George Brant, comes the story of an ace fighter pilot whose career in the sky is ended early due to an unexpected pregnancy (in Grounded). Reassigned to operate military drones from a windowless trailer outside Las Vegas, she hunts terrorists by day and returns to her family each night. As the pressure to track a high-profile target mounts, the boundaries begin to blur between the desert in which she lives and the one she patrols half a world away. A compelling and moving one woman show. For tickets and more info, visit online at www.bigarts.org or call 239-395-0900. Happenings Magazine

THE NAPLES PLAYERS
Charles Ives Take Me Home JamieLynn Bucci, Robert Ball and Mark Vanagas in the Naples Players production of Charles Ives Take Me Home.
The Naples Players present Jessica Dickey’s poignant and eloquent ode to fathers and daughters, Charles Ives Take Me Home, with performances Jan. 17 through Feb. 11. Whether the relationship between a father and daughter is nonexistent or reminiscent of Atticus Finch and Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, that relationship will prove to be one of the most profound of both of their lives. Charles Ives Take Me Home eloquently guides us through the lives of John Starr (Mark Vanagas), a talented concert violinist and his equally gifted athlete daughter Laura (JamieLynn Bucci). Throughout their lives John Starr’s love of music and his daughter Laura’s passion for basketball are at odds, but thankfully they have the spirit of modernist composer Charles Ives (Robert Ball) to play referee. “It’s impossible to experience this beautiful story without being touched in some way,” said director Jessica Walck, TNP’s associate artistic director. Walck is known for her acclaimed direction of the thought provoking and moving These Shining Lives in TNP’s 2017 season. “Having a father is something universal to all of us and yet we have so few opportunities through the arts to reflect on how truly lifechanging that relationship is for us. Whether we are rebelling against them or yearning for their admiration, they shape who we are. That is something worth exploring, and Charles Ives Take Me Home does that with exceptional fluency.” Charles Ives Take Me Home is a story told with a lightness that will have you laughing at one moment and moved in another, but it is one that will stay with you long after you leave the theatre. That may be because stories about father-daughter relationships are sparse or it may be Dickey’s gift for storytelling that includes using music to tell
12 - January 2018
a story, and in this case the music of modernist composer Charles Ives. Ive’s passion for music and ability to perceive what exists between the obvious is the perfect addition to Dickey’s storytelling. Fathers impact their daughters lives as much through words unsaid than those expressed. A lifetime filled with the complex push and pull of John and Laura’s relationship, is articulated fluidly through the cadence of the dribbling of a basketball and the sometimes soothing and other times energizing or agitating sound of the violin. Charles Ives musical compositions, though completely unique and unlike any of his time are considered some of the most important musical influences in the 20th century. Perhaps that is why Dickey included Ives music in this deeply layered play. His music was complex, sometimes confusing but in the end profoundly influential, just like the father-daughter relationship of John and Laura Starr explored in Charles Ives Take Me Home. "One thing I am certain of is that, if I have done anything good in music, it was, first, because of my father, and second, because of my wife," said Ives. This heartfelt ode to father and daughters is a celebration of joy, family, art, love and what it means to be home. Charles Ives Take Me Home is a play to be experienced by all and if possible, shared with those who have had a meaningful influence on your life. Performances of Charles Ives Take Me Home are Jan. 17 – Feb. 11. Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for subscribers and $10 for students and educators. Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. For tickets and more information visit www.naplesplayers.org or call (239) 263-7990.

CULTURAL PARK THEATER
Musical comedy on Cape Coral stage
By Michael Moran The Pajama Game is the 1954 musical comedy featuring “Steam Heat,” a sexy, tightly wired number for three dancers that helped put a young Bob Fosse on the map. It springs naturally out of a show that’s sort of about labor relations “ the workers in a pajama factory need a raise” but is really about office romances, namely between new supervisor Sid Sorokin and grievance-committee head Babe Williams. Sure, it’s old-fashioned, but it’s guaranteed to paste a smile on your face and it’s got enough cheerful, seductive steam heat. Robin Dawn’s direction of this production gets it all right, and doesn’t make the mistake of trying to change the show’s vintage stripes. And the music grabs the audience from the overture till the last note is sung in the show. The whole cast suddenly erupts into infectious jubilation during “Hernando’s Hideaway,” a tango tune set in a nightclub for trysts. Someone slips a coin into the jukebox, and the number begins to swing. The cast twists and lifts as if it’s finally been unleashed. It’s a funny feeling, because the show never seems aimed in the wrong direction. Vintage musicals will continue to be fertile territory for Cultural Park Theater. They do them well and bring new fans to each one of

Her former college professor arrives to ask for financial backing for a play he has written about a murder. The three main Mafiosi are intrigued with producing the play. When the author learns that his backers are gangsters, all hell breaks loose. A madcap situation of murder and menace served up with plenty of pasta and laughter. The local production is directed by Ken Crisp. The Langdon Playhouse is located in the Charlotte Players Community Theater Center at 1182 Market Circle, Murdock. Noises Off will be staged Jan. 19 - 27 Cultural Center of Charlotte County.
Called the funniest farce ever written, Noises Off presents a manic menagerie as a cast of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called Nothing’s On. Doors slamming, on and offstage intrigue, and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play. Noises Off will be directed by Gary Obeldobel. Divas in a Man’s World will be presented Jan. 24 at the Cultural Center of Charlotte County. This star-studded concert spectacular features Steven Andrade as Cher and the hilarious Gary Dee as your host and Joan Rivers impersonator. These productions are performed at the Cultural Center Theater 2280 Aaron St., Port Charlotte Evening show times are 7:30 p.m. and matinees (for Breaking Legs and Noises Off) are 2 p.m. Tickets may be ordered at the Charlotte Players website at www.charlotteplayers.org or call 941255-1022.

ART
Estero Fine Art Show at Gulf Coast Town Center Jan. 6 & 7
Some 100 acclaimed artists will be participating in the 21st bi-annual Estero Fine Art Show - now at Gulf Coast Town Center - on Jan. 6 & 7. This art show is special – and is voted in the top 100 art shows in America – three years in a row. Batik artist Paula Mae Green is included in this esteemed group. If you’re not familiar with batik (also known as rozome), it is a wax-and-dye resist process that traces its origins back to 13th century Java. Not many artists engage in the process because it is so exacting and time-consuming. But that’s part of its charm for Green, whose Swedish lineage includes several generations of crafts people who believed that “if you are going to do something, try to take it to its highest form.” While this may be true, Paula has omitted a couple of crucial, preliminary steps. First, it is incumbent upon her to choose her motif. Green’s repertoire includes Deco, Asian and Cubist compositions. The images from her Deco and Asian series in particular are sinuous, elegant and dynamic in the finest tradition of Art Nouveau masters such as Klimt, Cheret and even the ineffable Henri de Toulouse-
Lautrec. But the parallels to the femme nouvelle subjects celebrated by Czech artist Alphonse Mucha in his widely-popular densely-patterned posters of the early 20th century. Green’s batik renderings of Deco Dancers, At the Theater, Kiss and Evening are not just chic and sophisticated. They evoke a feel of bygone times and flappers and the Roaring ‘20s. Paula uses small brushes in order to achieve impossibly fine detail in her meticulously handcrafted portraits, figurative scenes and floral designs. This level of rendition is almost unheard of in batik. Frankly, it is unattainable by artists possessing lesser talent, regardless of medium. Once the composition has been transferred to fabric, Green is ready to begin the batik process, which starts with dipping the entire fabric into a pan of dye (see step 1, above). The color which is to be preserved is then waxed over and the process is repeated in successive layers as other colors are added to the drawing until the final composition emerges. After the last dye is applied, the cumulative layers of wax are stripped off

revealing the finished work. “If a person is doing something they truly love, it reflects in their life and work,” she comments. She is a resident of Pompano Beach. Meet Paula Mae Green and many other fine artists on Jan. 6 & 7. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The Estero Fine Art Show is produced by Hot Works, LLC. Art Festival at Mercato Jan. 27 & 28
The Art Festival at Mercato is scheduled for Jan. 27 and 28 in Naples. The featured artist for The Art Festival at Mercato is Ben Foster. Ben Foster designs representational, commissioned, bronze sculpture that captures humorous or unique moments in life. His work can be viewed in public and private collections throughout the US and internationally. This year, Ben will be displaying never before seen new works that he created specifically to debut at this years festival. Ben attributes his success as a bronze sculptor in part to his unique approach with each design. Creating a lifelong relationship with each collector is Ben’s desire. He meets personally with collectors to discuss their needs and desires for a custom work of art. Bringing their dreams and desires to life in bronze is an incredibly fulfilling endeavor. “I enjoy getting to know my collectors and hearing the stories of how the sculptures have enriched their lives.” Ben’s work, specifically his bronze bears, adorn several Jack Nicklaus golf courses throughout the U.S. Ben Foster brings his sculptures to life at his studio, nestled in the foothills of the Wind Rivers Mountains in Wyoming. The other half of the year, Ben, along with his family, can be found in Naples. Ben spends his time out of his studio observing native birds and local wildlife in their natural environment to bring inspiration for new sculptures.
Ben Foster Each sculpture begins with a block of clay, various wood and metal sculpting tools and an imagination. Ben’s work captures an essence of creation that reaches out, touches us and draws us to it. Once Ben completes the sculpture in clay, he then makes a silicon “mother” mold that will be used to replicate a limited edition of his original sculpture. The mold is taken to the art foundry where the bronze casting process begins. Each casting is created using the ancient “lost-wax” casting method. A hand-applied, chemical patina completes the sculpture. Visit Ben personally at The Art Festival at Mercato where you can learn all about his work and the work of 50 other national artists. The festival will be held Jan. 27 and 28 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Mercato Shops are located at 9123 Strada Place, Naples. Harbour View Gallery: Barbara Broderick, Roy John Fuller
Harbour View Gallery in Cape Coral will welcome featured artists Barbara Broderick (stained glass) and Roy John Fuller (watercolors) at a reception on Tuesday, Jan. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. Barbara Broderick is a Cape Coral resident and a Chicago native. Her work is meant to capture the beauty of everyday moments. She is not your typical stained glass artist. All of her designs come from her original drawings. She captures the beauty of glass with the way light can make it radiate and glow. Using metal and light as part of her medium, she creates shadows giving dimension and depth to her pieces. With the use of her kiln, her art also includes 3-D stained glass. It is meant to feel to come alive in light and literally pop out at you. This unique aspect, signature of her artwork, makes each piece

truly exceptional. None of her art is ever duplicated; owning her work is owning the original. Roy John Fuller a.k.a the “Big Brush Man” is a native of Virginia but has lived in SW Florida for the past 35 years. Roy is a retired engineer and now spends his time creating watercolors using design principals that inspire him. Roy only uses the primary colors of red, blue and yellow, however he does like to use a warm and cool tone in each color. By combining warm and cool colors the watercolor paintings have more variety of temperatures. Roy starts his watercolor paintings with a simple value sketch. This allows him to adjust the positions of his dark and light values so the painting will be more appealing. Three is a magic number in Roy’s painting. He only paints three trees, rocks, mountains, birds, or houses to complete his paintings. Roy offers watercolor workshops. Their work will be on display through January. The gallery is located at 5789 Cape Harbour Drive, Cape Coral.

Hirdie Girdie showcases four artists
Sanibel's Hirdie Girdie Co-Op Gallery is showcasing the work of four of its 15 award-winning local artists in January. Anne Tuttle has been working in the medium of colored pencil since the 1990's. It allows her to combine her love of drawing and detail with color. She appreciates colored pencil's simplicity and versatility and she has enjoyed its growth as an accepted medium in shows and galleries. Denny Souers has been involved in photography for more than 50 years. Though he's taken photographs all over the United States, his favorite subjects are Sanibel and Captiva wildlife, sunsets and beaches. A volunteer at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, he keeps his camera close to capture amazing images. Sanibel resident Jeanne Risher's passion is fused glass. She loves the unpredictable outcome of the fusing process and her colorful designs range from

DAAS Co-Op showcases art of James Massacci
This month of January, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts will introduce the art of guest artist James Massacci. The exhibition, entitled Sarcasms and Hypocrisies, seeks to create some controversy and invoke conversation amongst the spectators. The opening reception coincides with the monthly SoCo Second Saturday, held at the SoCo Cultural District (Alliance for the Arts and Royal Palm Square block) on Saturday, Jan. 13 from 6 to 10 p.m. James Massacci’s paradoxical life has led to the creation of thought-provoking, diverse paintings for which he has become known. His art spans from the whimsical, yet head-tilting, modernization of antique photographs, to remarkable paint-splattered portraits, to viral, controversial pieces that have resulted in extreme protest. The artist grew up beneath pallid skies that settled upon an anemic skyline of steel mills and abandoned buildings – once a birthplace of American dreams. The starkness of Warren, Ohio, didn’t breed or mold imaginations, and yet he somehow found a way out of what he describes as a bleak landscape and onto a canvas full of color and line-crossing consent. Now based in Florida, his work has been showcased in galleries across the country, and purchased for private collections.
James Massacci More information about Massacci’s art is available at www.massacciart.com. For more information about the gallery, visit www.daascoop.com or call 239-590-8645. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery is conveniently located in the Royal Palm Square at 1400 Colonial Blvd., suite 84 in Fort Myers. Season hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sea Grape features Ann Tuttle and Marlene Jones
Sea Grape Gallery will be featuring two of their artists, Anne Tuttle (colored pencil) and Marlene Jones, (horsehair pottery) from Jan. 4 through Feb. 8. Anne Tuttle, prior to moving to Florida, spent most of her life living on the Connecticut shoreline where she focused her paintings on boats, beaches and other maritime themes. Her primary interest is drawing where she has found satisfaction in watching colored pencil art grow in popularity, becoming an accepted medium in art shows and galleries. Anne strives for a minimalist approach and a clean, uncluttered look in her artwork. Living in Florida, Anne says “I am inspired by the natural beauty of the area and often find subject matter in my own yard.” In addition to working in colored pencil, Anne creates delicate Silverpoint drawings using a technique which dates back to the Old Masters. It is evident that Anne truly enjoys the creative process to produce her art and the satisfaction of successfully completing a piece of art for others to enjoy. Marlene Jones lived in Baltimore, Maryland during the 1960s where she learned the art of creating horsehair pottery. Later she moved to Florence, Italy for four years where she had the opportunity to further her knowledge and skills in the area of ceramic arts. Upon retiring to Punta Gorda after a successful marketing career, Marlene put Marlene Jones 36 - January 2018
her artistic abilities to work creating stoneware, raku and horsehair pottery. She is especially fascinated by the folklore of horsehair pottery which originated with the Plains Indians who fired horsehair into their wares. She loves creating custom pieces for horse owners and friends Ann Tuttle using tail or mane hair from their own horses. Marlene’s one-of-a-kind unique creations are truly beautiful pieces of art which can be displayed in any home. Many of Anne’s beautiful colored pencil drawings and Marlene’s unique horsehair pottery are prominently on display at the Sea Grape Gallery. In addition, more of their art and the artworks of all Sea Grape artists can be viewed at www.seagrapegallery.com. Sea Grape Gallery has been awarded the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce’s Special Recognition Award and has consistently won the Charlotte Sun Newspaper’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best Art Gallery. The Gallery is celebrating their 30 year Anniversary in 2018. Come visit the gallery and its many talented award-winning artists who are on hand to welcome and assist visitors. Sea Grape Gallery is located at 113 W. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda and can be reached at 941-575-1718. ACMA: Nikki Talley, Bill Mize and others The Americana Community Music Associations starts the new year with Songwriters at Sunset Jan. 4 at 4:15 p.m. at Lovers Key State Park. The sunset event features Bob Williams, Mike McMillan, Ed Summer, Bill Steel. Be sure to give yourself and extra 30 minutes to park and take the tram to the beach. The show is free parking is $8 at car. Bob Williams’ original songs and the stories behind his songs always bring a smile! As a teenager, Bob began writing his own music. Pulling elements from folk- rock and country rock, Bob created a sound all of his own. Bob's songs are personal, irreverent, funny, and sad, and most importantly, true to his heart. Mike McMillan got his first guitar as a teenager and has been pursuing his musical dreams ever since (in between jobs, 4 kids and several dogs). After his first Doc Watson concert in the 1970's, he was inspired to learn finger picking and then later, many blues songs. Ed Summers hails from Norton Shores, Mich. He's been playing bass guitar for several years around the Fort Myers area. Ed's influences include Motown, blues and jazz. Bill Steel is a snowbird from Windsor, Ontario. He played in a small band as a teenager, dabbled for many years, but then came "out" of the musical closet after retirement, inspired by singer-songwriters like John Prine, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zant and the many talented members of ACMA. Friends of Lovers Key, Inc. has joined with the ACMA to offer free Acoustic concerts of all original music. The concerts will take place in the large gazebo located right on the beach. Seating is available for the first 80 people. Additional seating is also available on the sand. Be sure to give yourself an extra 30 minutes to park and take the tram to the beach. The show is free parking is $8 a car. The ACMA welcomes back Roy Schneider and Kim Mayfield, the Reckless Saints, to the stage Jan. 6 at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation Nikki Talley and Jason at 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. Former syndicated cartoonist Roy Schneider has found his true calling in writing and performing his “Blue-Twangled Folk & Roll” music. Schneider has developed a loyal fan base through national radio airplay and consistent touring, performing his blend of the gritty, soulful and sweet to delighted audiences all across the USA and places abroad. He appears most often with Kim Mayfield providing harmony vocals and accompaniment on mandolin, percussion, and piano. From house concerts and folk clubs to festivals and theaters, the duo - gradually becoming recognized as 'Schneider & Mayfield' - clock up thousands of miles annually in their van "Ulysses" toting guitars, harmonicas, banjos, mandolins, pianos, and assorted percussive things wherever they are needed. ACMA member musician David Hintz opens the show. David has been an ACMA supporter since the beginning and often beguiles us with his own brand of original music. On Jan. 13 at 2 p.m., the ACMA’s Saturday afternoon series Songwriters at the Library continues at South County Regional Library located at 21100 Three Oaks Parkway in Estero with Bill Veach, Ross Jordan, Dan Philgreen. This is a free show of local songwriters sharing original songs and the stories behind the songs. Bill Veach has a love of travel that is expressed in many of his songs. His songs are often autobiographical, about his experiences, travel, love, loss and some characters he has met on his journey. Ross Jordan has been playing and writing music for a long time. He studied Classical Guitar at Rutgers University and has played his original songs from New Jersey to San Francisco to South Dakota and now to South West Florida. His songs reflect influences from these varied regions.

Dan Philgreen ... Coming of age in the ‘70s, when so many great singer-songwriters were on the radio, has always loved folk and folk-rock music. His original tunes attempt to take an honest look at life as he sees it and leave the listener with hope. Nikki Talley with Jason Sharp will perform Jan. 13 at the ACMA in Fort Myers. After 4 1/2 years of hard touring, 150-200 shows annually, Nikki continues traveling on, bringing her gorgeous voice & thoughtful songs all across the nation. Hailing from the mountains of western North Carolina, it’s only fitting that her songs are as eclectic as the state that boasts the mountains and the sea. Along with her guitar & clawhammer style banjo, her musical partner & husband Jason Sharp adds resonant lush guitar tones as well as harmonies to round out the duo’s sound. Opening for Nikki and Jason is ACMA member Chakulla. He spends much of his time and resources fighting hunger in America ... and still finds time practice his craft of music. Kip Lawrence will perform Friday, Jan. 19. Kip Lawrence is a songwriter living in Matlacha, and was a founding member of The Yard Dogs who put out 12 cd's of original music which came to be known as Florida Swamp Music. The Yard Dogs toured extensively and brought their music to people all over the world. He wrote many of the songs along with his partners Yard Dog Charlie and Brian "Swamp Box" Travis. In his early years, he worked to help establish The Key West Songwriters Fest and created the SW Florida Songwriters Fest as well as the SW Florida Blues Fest. His latest project is his band the Skinny Water Seagrass Band which combines island music with bluegrass. Opening for Kip is Alan and Cindy Bickford. Aka Native Kid, they were both born and raised in South Florida. Alan grew up fishing the waters of Biscayne Bay and the Keys with his parents and grandparents. The inspiration for Sharp perform Jan. 13 his songs come from family, friends, and his Florida roots. It's not often the ACMA showcases an instrumentalist, but when they do … watch out. The ACMA presents Grammy award winner guitarist Bill Mize on Jan. 27. Bill Mize is a son of Tennessee, and a fitting representative of his state’s rich musical heritage. His critically lauded fingerstyle compositions are fluid and intricate, and their delivery masterful. One suspects an influential teacher, and one would be right. “I received most of my musical education from a cheap Zenith radio,” says Mize, who as a child drifted off to sleep to the decidedly non-sleepy lullabyes emanating from Nashville’s WLAC and WSM and Knoxville’s WNOX. Bill is a past winner of the National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition at The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. Guitar Player Magazine has labeled this event the “U.S. Open of guitar competitions." Bill received a GRAMMY Award for his collaboration with musician and storyteller David Holt on the recording Stellaluna, and has been featured on the popular guitar compilations "Windham Hill Guitar Sampler" by Windham Hill Records and "Masters of the Acoustic Guitar" by Narada Records. In 2009, Bill’s music appeared in the Ken Burns documentary “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea." Mel Bay Productions transcribed Mize's second CD, "Tender Explorations," into a songbook, and his original compositions have been transcribed for Fingerstyle Guitar and Acoustic Guitar magazines. Local songwriter Bill Burkert will open the show on Jan. 27. As a songwriter and performer, he is totally a product of ACMA. The Feb. 1 Songwriters at Sunset at Lovers Key will feature Ray Cerbone, Kip Lawrence & Houseboat Jim. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at 2756 McGregor Blvd., and all shows start at 7 pm. Mastersingers Chamber Chorus, City of Palms Youth Choir to share concert stage
The Mastersingers Chamber Chorus and the City of Palms Youth Choir will be presenting Serenade to Music, a choral concert featuring the 26-voice adult chamber group and the 36 voices of the City of Palms Youth Choir. The groups will each sing works in the 75-minute program that will be performed at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2691 Pine Island Road, Cape Coral, on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. Admission for this performance is free with a collection to benefit the ministries at Messiah Lutheran Church. The concert will be repeated on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Foulds Theater at the Alliance for the Arts, located on the corner of McGregor and Royal Palm Square boulevards in Fort Myers. The performance will be followed by a reception in the adjoining art gallery sponsored by local realtor Millie Dinkel and Cornerstone Coastal Properties. Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased on the Mastersingers website, www.mastersingersfm.com. The Chamber Chorus will be singing a variety of works for this concert including Rachmaninoff’s moving hymn to the Virgin Mary, Bogoroditse Devo; a new work by American composer, Thomas LaVoy, The Immortal Memory; and Ralph Vaughan Williams stunning Serenade to Music, the work for which the program is named. “Working with the smaller chamber ensemble gives us the freedom to 42 - January 2018
explore, not only smaller venues like the Alliance and Messiah Lutheran, but it also opens up many more types of music not accessible to the full Mastersingers Chorus, “ said director Matt Koller. Director Koller also conducts the City of Palms Youth Choir. Their portion of the program will feature music by American composers Stuart Churchill, Morten Lauridsen and Eric Barnum. In only its second full season of existence, the Youth Choir has achieved some notable milestones. The group has performed three world premier pieces, two written specifically for the ensemble. They were invited to sing last spring at a choral event in New York’s Carnegie Hall. This season the group has placed two singers, Savannah Koller and Camryn Leith, in the prestigious American Choral Directors Association Southern Division Honor Choir. Koller said, “We knew that there was a need for a community youth choir to provide vocal instruction, musical pedagogy, and performance opportunities beyond what the school system could offer. However, the success that we’ve enjoyed in just a couple of seasons, the quality of singers that we have attracted, and the progress that we’ve made, exceed all of our expectations.” For more information about these concerts and the Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers, visit online at www.mastersingerfm.com. Shell Point: Glenn Miller Orchestra, Evan Drachman Evan Drachman
Glenn Miller Orchestra
Shell Point Retirement Community continues the performing arts program of its 2017-2018 Concert Series with a concert by the Glenn Miller Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18 at the Village Church on The Island at Shell Point in Fort Myers. With its unique jazz sound, originating in the 1930s, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is still considered one of the greatest bands of all time. It is one of the most popular and sought-after big bands in the world today for both concert and swing dance engagements. The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently ever since. The 19 current members of the Glenn Miller Orchestra hail from all parts of the country. In January 2012, male vocalist Nick Hilscher of Atlanta, Georgia, took the helm as band director. The orchestra performs an average of 300 shows a year and has toured all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Europe, South America, and Japan.
Shell Point welcomes cellist Evan Drachman on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Grand Cypress Room at The Woodlands. Evan Drachman possesses in abundance two qualities for which his grandfather, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, was revered: the ability to make the cello imitate the human singing voice and, even more importantly, the ability to tell a story. Born in Boston, Evan studied at the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. Since graduating from the Curtis Institute of Music in 1998, Evan has appeared regularly as a soloist with orchestras, as well as giving recitals and chamber music performances across the United States. For this performance, Evan will be accompanied by Victor Santiago Asuncion on the piano. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.shellpoint.org/concerts or by phone at 239-454-2067.

Bluegrass Jamboree Jan. 27 in Cape Coral
The Cape Coral Historical Society and Museum are back with their Bluegrass Jamboree for a third year running. Mark your calendars for Jan. 27 from noon to 5 p.m. so you can join your community once again to have a fun day out supporting your local historical museum. The event will be held behind the museum at Cultural Park in Cape Coral. Advance general admission tickets are $15 or $20 at the gate. Advance VIP tickets are $40 and include your meal, drink, dessert and seating under a large tent facing the stage. VI.P tickets are $50 at the gate. Enjoy wonderful BBQ from Cape Coral’s own Bubba’s Roadhouse & Saloon, because you can’t have Bluegrass without BBQ!. Trafalgar Middle School will also be back once again, bringing delicious and healthy homemade treats for sale. Grab your blankets, chairs and come kick back with your friends and family. Inside of the VIP tent are decorated tables and chairs, your own personal food and drink area, as well as desserts by Jason’s Deli! Bluegrass music has become a tradition and sound at the heart of most of America. Bluegrass roots were first formed here by European settlers, bringing together the melodies of gospel, country, and a sound of its own! High energy comes from the stage of these performers as they focus on harmonizing and creating catching melodies. This year the Bluegrass Jamboree music line up is stellar, with bands from all over. The musical lineup: Sawgrass Drifters from 12:30 to 1:40 p.m., Florida Bluegrass Express from 2 to 3:10 p.m., and Bluegrass Central from 3:30 to 4:40 p.m.
Dick Spottswood is also returning for the third year to emcee the show, and organizers couldn’t be more excited. Sawgrass Drifters was created by Mickie and Roli Scholl, and Dan O’Connell. The Scholl’s, a couple from Switzerland with musical backgrounds since their early ages, came to the US in 1999 and teamed up with singer and bass player O'Connell from Rhode Island in 2001. Their preferred musical style is an all acoustic mix of bluegrass, folk and country. The Florida Bluegrass Express was founded by Keith Bass in 2000. Keith has played Banjo since the age of 13 and is known to be one of the best banjo players around. The band has made many recordings, and have played throughout Florida and many other states including festivals in Georgia and Kentucky. Bluegrass Central was started over 20 years ago by Scott Ritter with the idea of bringing good friends, who were accomplished musicians, together to play and perform great bluegrass music. The idea worked, and over the years, Bluegrass Central has included musicians from Naples to Homosassa Springs, playing festivals and clubs in Southwest Florida. The group draws influences from many styles, including country music, traditional jazz, Western swing, Irish music and of course, bluegrass. All event proceeds go to the Cape Coral Historical Society & Museum. Tickets are available at the Cape Coral Historical Museum, 544 Cultural Park Blvd., by calling (239) 772-7037, or purchase your tickets online from www.capecoralhistoricalmuseum.org.

Clay Walker, Cody Jinks to play at The Ranch SAM GALLOWAY CONCERT SERIES
The Sam Galloway Concert Series in conjunction with Gator Country 101.9 continues with more national artists at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers in 2018. Clay Walker is set to perform at The Ranch on Jan. 13. MultiPlatinum country music artist and East Texas native, Clay Walker, rocked the country scene in 1993 with his debut album that included the smash hit “What’s It To You.” He continued to make a splash, releasing a string of number one hits including “If I Could Make A Living,” “This Woman and This Man” and “Rumor Has It.” In 1996 he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis but Clay did not let that set him back. He has continued touring and recording steadily since the diagnosis and is well known for his high-energy concerts and performance style. He later founded the Band Against MS foundation after realizing the impact the disease has on others. Since its formation in 2003, Clay has helped Band Against MS raise upwards of $5 million through charity performances, golf tournaments, bike rides, auctions, etc. Clay has had 4 RIAA Platinum albums, 2 Certified Gold albums, and 11 #1 singles to date. After “She Won’t Be Lonely Long” reached top 5 on the radio, Clay began working on new music with a fresh sound. He recently released his single “Right Now” to The Highway on Sirius XM this past fall, teasing an impending album release. The full album is expected to debut later this year. Tickets for Clay Walker’s show start at $32. The Ranch welcomes Cody Jinks on Feb. 9. With his smooth baritone and lonesome, dark-hued country songs, the Saving Country Music Album of the Year award winner is proving that Country Music empowered by credibility has made its way to the masses. This did not happen overnight for Jinks, who has spent Happenings Magazine
the better part of the last 10 years playing numerous empty bar rooms to a never ending financial loss. “Yeah, I’ve been pretty good at losing money. Not the greatest feeling in the world to be gone from home for long stretches of time, only to walk in the door broke. But I never gave up. Never even had that thought.” His latest critically-acclaimed album I’m Not The Devil smashed his Personal Chart Records, Breaking Top 5 On Billboard Country And Independent Album Charts. Pandora called I’m Not The Devil “a gift from above for country fans of all stripes.” Tickets start at $27 for Cody Jinks. Opening the show will be Ward Davis and Sunny Sweeney. Other upcoming shows in the Sam Galloway Concert Series include Jamey Johnson on Feb. 23, High Valley on April 7, Tracy Lawrence on April 21 and Colt Ford on April 27. The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community, says Brian Tidwell, general sales manager of Sam Galloway Ford. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community, Tidwell said. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. For most concerts, the doors open at 7 p.m. at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon, 2158 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers. January 2018 - 53
The Family Crest
Twisted Strings Jan. 27
Two nationally hailed groups The Family Crest and Simply Three will headline the 2018 Twisted Strings Music Festival Saturday, Jan 27 at Six Bends Harley-Davidson’s Top Rocker Field in Fort Myers. With lead vocalist Liam McCormick, The Family Crest blends classical romantic music with horn-laden Roaring ‘20s sounds. This San Francisco based seven-piece band was named #13 on Pastes magazine Best New Bands of 2014 noting that “Even with just seven people on stage, The Family Crest’s sweeping orchestral pop can hardly be contained.” NPR Music named The Family Crest “Favorite New Artist” in 2014. In a recent review of the group’s latest album Prelude to War, Paste magazine writes “One thing is certain: These guys are just as explosive as ever, and these songs are going to bring the house down in a live setting.” The gates will open at 4 p.m for an evening of music, food and fun. Back by popular demand and performing as guests arrive will be Southwest Florida’s Hot-Buttered Nuggets, bringing their own twist to artists ranging from Satchmo to Tom Waits to The Ink Spots. The festival opener is Southwest Florida’s Laura’s Auras. Billed

as half Leonard Bernstein and half Lynyrd Skynyrd, Laura’s Auras will have the audience on its feet. The national opener will be Simply Three. Acclaimed as “having what it takes” (Boston Philharmonic) and “highly imaginative and well played” (Maine Today), Simply Three continues to receive praise for their ability to impress listeners with a multitude of genres that span from Puccini and Gershwin to artists such as Adele, Coldplay and Michael Jackson. The electrifying trio of Glen McDaniel, Nick Villalobos, and Zack Clark, Simply Three has been captivating audiences worldwide with high-octane performances since 2010. By reshaping convention through this style of genre hopping, the trio continues to seek the true essence of classical crossover with original works as well as innovative arrangements that showcase their technical virtuosity and heartfelt musicality. Air Supply at Seminole Casino Hotel Jan. 26
Jay Goldberg Events and Entertainment & IT$ NOT OBER YET Productions present Air Supply in concert. The super duo of Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock will perform their iconic music at Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee on Friday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. A “Lost in Love” VIP ticket package also will be available for $159 per person and will include one premium reserved seat in the first 12 rows, an invitation to sound check with a meet & greet to follow for photo opportunities with Air Supply, and an exclusive VIP swag bag. Air Supply was already a hit in their native Australia when they burst onto the American music scene in 1980 with the chart-topping single “Lost in Love,” which was quickly followed by “All Out of Love.” Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The
Beatles' run of consecutive top five singles. The albums “Lost in Love,” “The One That You Love,” “Now & Forever,” and “The Greatest Hits” sold in excess of 20 million copies. "Lost in Love" was named Song of the Year in 1980, and, with the other singles, sold more than 10 million copies. Singles "Lost in Love", "All Out of Love", "The One That You Love", "Sweet Dreams", and "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" have each achieved multi-million plays on the radio. Air Supply’s trademark sound – Hitchcock's soaring tenor voice and Russell's simple yet majestic songs – delights audiences around the world as the duo continue to tour on a regular basis. Concert attendees must be 21 years of age or older. Tickets are available starting at $85 for general admission can be purchased online at www.jaytv.com, at the casino or by phone at 800-514-ETIX(3849).
Mary Wilson, The Shirelles to perform Feb. 2 Jay Goldberg Events and Entertainment & IT$ NOT OBER YET Productions present music icons Mary Wilson and The Shirelles in concert at Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee on Friday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. Mary Wilson, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, founded one of the most successful female singing groups in recording history – The Supremes. Since then, Wilson has written a best-selling autobiography, performed on stage and screen, lectured and toured the world, and continues to be looked up to as a singer who set the standard for females in the recording industry. The Supremes found legendary success when Motown founder Berry Gordy put them in touch with his top writing and producing team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. With an unprecedented 12 number-one hits, including five in a row: “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me,” “Stop, In The Name Of Love” and “Back in My Arms Again.” Wilson worked hard to keep the dream alive even after Ballard
and Ross left the group. Wilson, Jean Terrell and Cindy Birdsong performed as The New Supremes and racked up three top 10 hits: “Up The Ladder To The Roof,” “Stoned Love” and “River Deep, Mountain High” (with the Four Tops). To this day Wilson continues to tour under the moniker of Mary Wilson of The Original Supremes, and has performed for celebrities and politicians all over the world. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Shirelles were one of the earliest and among the very best girl groups with more than 20 “Billboard Top 100 Hits” including the timeless classic Billboard #1 Hits “Soldier Boy” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”. Often credited with launching the girl-group genre, their enduring string of hits began with "I Met Him on a Sunday" and their historic 1958 debut at New York’s legendary Apollo Theatre, which launched them into music history. The Shirelles’ series of hits includes “Dedicated To The One I Love” (Billboard #3), “Foolish Little Girl” (Billboard #4), “Mama Said” (Billboard #4), “Baby It’s You” (Billboard #8), “Everybody Loves a Lover” (Billboard #19), “Big John” (Billboard #21), “Tonight’s The Night” (Billboard #39) and more. Tickets are $59 and can be purchased at www.jaytv.com, at the casino or by phone at 800-514-ETIX (3849).
Tanya Tucker on stage Feb. 3 Jay Goldberg Events and Entertainment & IT$ NOT OBER YET Productions present An Evening with country music legend Tanya Tucker at Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. A defining voice of country music, Tucker inspired many female artists who still top the charts today. From the signature classic songs to the unforgettable sass and soul of her voice, Tucker has paved a path in country music and beyond. Her style has proved to be timeless ever since she recorded her debut single “Delta Dawn” at age 13. The single earned a Grammy nomination for “Best Female Country Vocal Performance” and launched Tucker into the national spotlight. In 1972, she earned the “Top New Female Vocalist” Happenings Magazine
award by the Academy of Country Music. With a wildly growing career at such a young age, the Tucker craze continued with her first number one single in 1973, “What’s Your Mama’s Name.” As additional hits continued, Tucker added an edgy rock image, which she still embraces, to her musical taste with the album T.N.T, which was released in 1978. Through a collaborative relationship with Glen Campbell, Tucker transitioned to a new label in the early 1980s and was back in the Top 10 with “Can I See You Tonight.” Just a few years later, Tucker experienced another hit with “One Love at a Time.” She had four more number one charted hits between 1986-1988. The 1990s gave rise to “Two Sparrows in a Hurricane” and “It’s a Little Too Late.” Tickets are $67.50 and are available at the casino, on www.jaytv.com or by calling 800-218-0007.

Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing Feb. 6 Celebrate the Edison Festival of Light and help feed the hungry by attending Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing Tuesday, Feb. 6 at The First Presbyterian Church in downtown Fort Myers at the corner of Second and Lee streets. It’s the 29th anniversary of the hymn sing, which is organized and sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships. Because of the overwhelming popularity of the event, three performances are planned at 1, 4 and 7 p.m. The doors will open 30 minutes prior to each performance. Admission is free, but because of the increased need for food for the hungry, organiz-
ers are requesting that those who attend bring cans of non-perishable food and a voluntary cash donation, if possible, to benefit The Soup Kitchen of Community Cooperative. “We need to help The Soup Kitchen by donating as much canned goods and cash as we can to help families who most need it in our community,” said Sam Galloway, Jr., founder of Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing. This year’s event will feature the First Presbyterian Sanctuary Choir and many other singers, including members of the Mastersingers, guest soloists, along with a piano-organ combination.
Christmas Carol Sing
Residents who attended the Christmas Carol Sing at First Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers Dec. 5 contributed plenty of canned goods to help The Soup Kitchen of Community Cooperative feed the hungry in Southwest Florida. About 6,000 pounds of food was donated at the 27th Annual Christmas Carol Sing, which was sponsored and organized by the Galloway Family of Dealerships. The canned goods will be distributed immediately to families in need, according to event organizers. “It is so gratifying to see our community coming together to help those less fortunate, especially during these economic times. The need has never been Rev. Roger Peterson and soloist Linda Digman sing greater,” said event founder Sam “God Bless America.” Photos by Susie Bennett Galloway, Jr. About 2.000 people attended the three performances, which featured a sing-a-long with the First Presbyterian Church Choir, special guest soloists, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. In addition to the Christmas Carol Sing, the Galloway Family of Dealerships also annually sponsors Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing, to be held Feb. 6 at First Presbyterian Church. Both events benefit The Soup Kitchen of Community Cooperative, which was founded by First Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers along with other churches in 1984. The Christmas Carol Sing and Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing are major sources of support for Community Cooperative, which works to end hunger and homelessness in Lee County. The non-profit agency provides more than 15,000 meals each month through its Community Cafes and Meals on Wheels programs, distributes more than 500,000 pounds of groceries Soloist Beth Filiowich sings “O Holy Night.” through its Mobile Food Pantries and serves 6,500 individuals and families with homeless For more information about Community and comprehensive case management services Cooperative, call (239) 332-SOUP or visit through its Social & Education Resource www.communitycooperative.com. The Verandaʼs general manager Dennis Genge
The Veranda marks 40 years
Most professionals are planning their retirement after 40 years of working in the same industry. But Paul Peden, owner and founder of the Veranda restaurant in downtown Fort Myers says he has no plans to slow down or walk away from his cherished dining icon. In 2018, the Veranda will celebrate 40 years of operation. Peden, who bought the two three-story, turn-of-the-century Victorian homes in 1978 and transformed them into the Veranda, has always maintained that there is no finish line for the restaurant. He says constant hard work, attention to detail and a consistent level of quality and service is what has kept his restaurant successful for the past four decades. “We still work hard every day to improve our food and service; we are never satisfied,” said Peden who has operated nearly 30 restaurants in his career. “We are constantly evolving to meet the changing tastes of our patrons. From the front of the house to the back of house, everyone works very hard to make it a great experience for our guests every time they dine with us, and I think it shows. It takes a skilled, caring staff honed to the needs of our patrons to keep them coming back.” “Our success can be attributed to the amount of experience our staff has. Our team has been doing this for a long time and they really know the business of taking care of people,” said general manager Dennis Genge who has been with the Veranda since 2000. The Veranda is located at 2122 Second St. and features Southern regional cuisine. Call 239-332-2065 or visit verandarestaurant.com. Happenings Magazine

Taps & Tunes returns Jan. 13 Craft beer, live music and more comes to downtown Fort Myers on Saturday, Jan. 13 for the third annual Taps & Tunes Craft Beer & Music Festival. Sample more than 80 craft beers while enjoying music from Problem Kids, Of Good Nature, and Jukebox the Ghost. Plus, purchase a variety of eats from local food trucks! The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is hosting this event which will be held at Centennial Park, downtown Fort Myers. The event runs 2 to 8 p.m. Problem Kids go on stage at 2 p.m., followed by Of Good Nature at 4 p.m. then ending with Jukebox the Ghost at 6 p.m. Jukebox the Ghost arrives after years of accruing a diehard following while remaining one of the hardest-working live acts in music. The group’s quirky songwriting and breathtaking performance skills have led the trio to share stages with Ben Folds, Jack’s Mannequin, Motion City Soundtrack and Guster, while being one of Yep Roc’s lynchpin artists since signing to the label in 2010. Jukebox the Ghost has dazzled on big stages, such as when the group rocked The Late Show with David Letterman, showcasing the vibrant pop-rock workout of “Schizophrenia” on late-night TV. The band recently returned to latenight TV where they performed the song "Postcard" off of their new self titled album on Conan. Of Good Nature is an indie rock-reggae group that was formed in Charlotte, NC, in 2011. The 2011 debut album, Just Add Water, won

Jukebox the Ghost Indie-Ville Reggae Album of the Year - Nashville, TN. On October 23rd 2015, their sophomore album, Life Worth Livin, debuted at #5 on the iTunes Top Reggae Album Chart. The notable Reggae Rise Up Festival in St. Petersburg, FL added Of Good Nature to the already stacked bill through their Artist Discovery Series in early 2017, along with Slightly Stoopid, Dirty Heads, Iration, Steel Pulse, The Green and many more. Problem Kids’ undeniably fresh sound is characterized by the group’s willingness to bounce effortlessly between vintage hip-hop, roots rock, and Caribbean salsa rhythms without missing a step. With creative arrangements and catchy melodies in place, the storytelling lyricism from two witty emcees seal the signature PK sound. In 2010, Problem Kids dropped their first full-length album, Poetry in Motion, which introduced the masses to their vibrant sound and featured some of Miami’s top emerging talent including songstress Anna Palmerola on the track “Ride with Me,” and rising reggae artist AG Lyonz on “Hold Me Down.” The album was well-received with local press, and catapulted the group to a busy show schedule, which included opening slots for hip-hop legends Chuck D, Uncle Luke, Rakim and more in 2012 alone. Tickets are $45 for unlimited beer tasting, $75 for VIP pass and $5 general admission. Tasting flights will be available for purchase at the event. For tickets and info, visit www.sbdac.com/taps-and-tunes-fortmyers/ Taps and Tunes is sponsored by Suncoast Beverage, iHeart Media, Y100, Courtyard Marriott, City of Fort Myers, The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel.

Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse
With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.
