Summer curtains

Not as many theatre curtains will rise during the summer months in Southwest Florida as in other times of the year. Nonetheless, we have some good options to keep the theatre goers happy. The hit musical Chicago is on stage at the Sugden Community Theatre. The Naples Players production runs through July 29. Another smash musical, Annie, returns to the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Fort Myers. This family classic plays now through Aug. 11. At the Laboratory Theater of Florida, Hush Up Sweet Charlotte plays for its final weekend June 29 July 1. Later in the month at the Fort Myers venue, Evil Dead the musical will be performed July 19 - 22. That is the high version. In Cape Coral, the Cultural Park Theater is active with two shows in July. The Queen of Bingo will be presented July 6, 7 and 8. The Bad Seed will be performed July 20, 21 and 22. The Savannah Sipping Society continues its hilarious run through July 22 in the Off Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers. Look in this month’s magazine for two more schedules for next season. We have published the show info for the Off Broadway Palm Theatre and the Fifth Third Broadway Series at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW. In the past few months, we have published schedules for Broadway Palm, Florida Repertory Theatre, Naples Players, Gulfshore Playhouse, TheatreZone, Laboratory Theater of Florida and Gulfshore Opera. Fourth of July

Summer has officially arrived. The kids have been out of school for a few weeks, and now we are ready to observe our big day of freedom. The Fourth of July is a wonderful way to show our appreciation for the freedoms that we have here in the United States. Many communities will celebrate with parades, fireworks, food, games, activities and lots of live music. No matter how you observe the day, please be safe with your fireworks and your level of “celebrating.”

More concerts

With all the indoor and outdoor music venues in Southwest Florida and up along the Sun Coast, we have a good mix of talented national artists who make stops in our neck of the woods. I commend all of our venues for their efforts to bring in a diverse schedule of music. Obviously, some genres of music sell more tickets than others in this market. But, it’s gratifying to see some venues take risks and bring in young or emerging artists or performers who may not be on the radio anymore, but still have a following and fan base. In the next few months, here’s what some of our concert choices will include: Shooter Jennings, Jon Langston, Chase Bryant, YES, Don McLean, O.A.R., Vanilla Fudge, Rick Derringer, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, Badfinger featuring Joey Molland, Steel Pulse, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, The Alarm, Chick Corea, Cody Johnson, Todd Rundgren, Rick Springfield, The Fixx, Tommy Tutone, Boney James, Riley Green, Pablo Cruise, Here Come the Mummies, Jerrod Niemann, Rickie Lee Jones, Anders Osborne, Wynonna & The Big Noise, Scotty McCreery, UB40, TOTO, Dweezil Zappa, The LACS, Willie Nelson, Livingston Taylor, Mindi Abair, Keb Mo, Ghost, Old Dominion and Celtic Thunder. CULTURAL PARK THEATRE COMPANY

Brian Linthicum as Charlotte and Randall Kenneth Jones as Miriam in Laboratory Theaterʼs production of Hush Up Sweet Charlotte playing now through July 1.

Lab Theater presents

Hush Up Sweet Charlotte

The Laboratory Theater of Florida presents Hush Up Sweet Charlotte, for its final weekend June 29 through July 1. If you loved last season's Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, you'll love this campy parody of the movie Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte! Auciences will journey to a plantation in the Old South and meet Charlotte Hollis, a southern belle whose only companion is her maid. She has been shunned by her community since the long-ago mysterious murder of her lover. Now the family home is about to be torn down, so she calls upon her cousin, Miriam, to help. It's sure to be a drag-tastic time with these divas! The Lab’ s own artistic director Annette Trossbach directed this show. “It’s a campy, fun, parody of the 1964 horror movie, Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, starring Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland. Set in the decaying mansion in Louisiana, the play deals with lovely but ostracized Charlotte (played by Brian Linthicum,) who is driven to the brink of madness as she struggles to save her family home. When Cousin Miriam (played by Randall Kenneth Jones) arrives to help, Charlotte and the whole situation spin dangerously out of control. Fort Myers resident Brian Linthicum, who plays Charlotte Happenings Magazine

Hollis, says “Step aside Bette Davis, there’s a new girl in town!” Randall Kenneth Jones, from Marco Island, having starred as Baby Jane Hudson last year, added: “Sure, I want to wear pants on stage again! But how many actors get to step into the stilettos of Bette Davis and Olivia De ’Havilland? My only concern is Olivia filing a lawsuit against me for ‘defamation of a character? Olivia, trust me, I love you.” Sue Schaffel, who splits her time between Bonita Springs and Washington DC says: “My favorite line in the show is ‘But Velma is -- well -- Velma.’ Stepping into the shoes of the supreme talent of Agnes Morehead, who played Velma in the film version, is a dream come true. Hush Up Sweet Charlotte will keep the audience laughing and hooting and hollering, all while sitting on the edge of their seats in suspense. This is my first entry into the Florida theater scene and what an initiation it is!” Hush Up Sweet Charlotte plays June 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. and July 1 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available on www.Brownpapertickets.com or by calling the box office at 239218-0481. Rich and Gretchen seem to have the ideal marriage, until they learn that it was manufactured by a mysterious biotech company which installed it into their brains. Because they can no longer afford this service, the company must repossess their improvements.

Murderers – A Killer Comedy by Jeffrey Hatcher Sept. 27 - Oct. 7 Gerald, Lucy and Minka: they look like everyday people, and each relates to us as they would a trusted friend. But they have one dark secret in common: they’re murderers! Homicide has never been so hilarious in this quirky whodunit show! Except you know whodunit; the fun is finding out how they dunit and why. Set in Riddle Key Retirement Center in Riddle, Fla., three unlikely killers justify their crimes in the most outrageous ways.

The Elephant Man by Bernard Pomerance Nov. 8 - 18 The Elephant Man is based on the life of John Merrick who lived in London during the latter part of the 19th century. A horribly deformed young man – victim of rare skin and bone diseases – he becomes the star freak attraction in traveling sideshows. Found abandoned and helpless, he is admitted to London’s prestigious Whitechapel Hospital. Under the care of celebrated young physician Frederick Treves, Merrick is introduced to London society and slowly evolves from an object of pity to an urbane and witty favorite of the aristocracy and literati, only to be denied his ultimate dream – to become a man like any other. The Agitators by Mat Smart Jan 17 - 27 Inspired by the enduring but tempestuous four-decade-long friendship between Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. As they grew to become the cultural icons we know 10 - July 2018

Lauren Drexler and Sonya McCarter in Gidion's Knot from the 2017-18 season. today, their movements collided and their friendship was severely tested. This series of powerful vignettes tells their story, from their meeting in Rochester, through a Civil War and to the highest halls of government. They agitated the nation, they agitated each other and, in doing so, they helped shape the Constitution and the course of American history.

Marian, or the True Tale of Robin Hood by Adam Szymkowicz Feb. 7 - 17 A gender-bending, patriarchy-smashing and hilarious new take on the classic tale. Robin Hood is and has always been Maid Marian in disguise. Robin/Marian leads a motley group of Merry Men (many of whom are not men) against the greedy Prince John. As the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, who will stand for the vulnerable if not Robin? Modern concerns and romantic entanglements clash on the battlefield and on the ramparts of Nottingham Castle in this play about selfishness, selflessness, and the cost of revealing your true self in a time of trouble. Joe Turnerʼs Come and Gone by August Wilson March 1 - 17 Set in a Pittsburgh boarding house in 1911, owners Seth and Bertha Holly play host to a makeshift family of people who come to stay – some for days, some longer – seeking new jobs, new lives and new beginnings. This eccentric group of wanderers includes propri-

etors, an eccentric clairvoyant with a penchant for old country voodoo, a young homeboy from the South and a mysterious stranger searching for his wife. Each denizen of the boarding house has a different relationship to a past of slavery as well as to the urban present.

Rancho Mirage by Steven Dietz May 9 - 19 Acclaimed playwright Steven Dietz’ comedy looks at affluent suburban couples whose truths finally catch up with them. At an ill-fated dinner party, these long-time friends are awakened to the secrets of their past with hilarious and farcical results. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturdays with a new 7:30 p.m. start time and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Audio described shows are also available on select dates. The Alliance will also facilitate a community conversation through talkbacks on select dates. Theatre lovers can save up to $42 with a season subscription. Games of bingo

& murder

on stage at Cultural Park

By Michael Moran

Whether or not you like playing bingo, you are in for a lighthearted, fun-filled show at Cultural Park Theater’s production of The Queen of Bingo, written by Jeanne Michels and Phyllis Murphy. Imagine the theater is really the bingo hall at St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Father Mac, the benevolent and kind parish priest, is overseeing all the bingo action. What’s more, you even get to join in that action! Enter Sis and Babe, the two main characters in the play. What unfolds as the play begins is less about who is the queen of bingo and more about two women on the other side of 50 who have come ready to play and in Babe’s case, are desperately hoping to win. Yes, they are sisters by birth, but that is about all that they have in common. While Sis, thoroughly enjoys the social aspects of bingo nights as much as the possibility of winning some money or prizes, the obvious pleasure she takes in gossiping about and keeping an eye on other players is disrupted by the emotional volatility of her sister. Babe has just come off another of her binge battles with food, sugar and self-loathing it seems, which accounts for her widely-ranging mood swings. She easily fluctuates between the exciting anticipation of winning big at bingo and her fear of running into Coach Anderson, a would-be paramour who she is desperately avoiding due 12 - July 2018

to her current appearance. Sis knows how to push all her emotional buttons. Who would have thought that bingo could be an answer to the challenges of a mid-life crisis? The Queen of Bingo is on stage July 6 through July 8 with performances on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and also on Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. Next ask yourself, can true evil be eradicated with the proper environment or are there some born with the ability to act without conscience or regret? You will find the answer when you see Cultural Park’s production of The Bad Seed by Maxwell Andersen. When the “perfect child,” Rhoda Penmark, goes on a school picnic, her classmate drowns. Miss Fern, the school teacher, and Mrs. Daigle, the drowned boy’s mother, believe Rhoda had something to do with the accident. Leroy, a local handyman, has suspicions of his own, while crime writers Reginald Tasker and Richard Bravo refuse to believe in such fantastic notions. Who is right? Could the “perfect child” have committed murder? You can find out as this wonderfully compelling story takes the stage July 20 through July 22 with four performances on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and also on Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. The Cultural Park Theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd. in Cape Coral. Broadway Series tickets are $21 for adults $18 for seniors; plus children, students and group rates are available. Call the box office at 239772-5862 for reservations. Michael Moran is executive director of the Cultural Park Theatre Company. Happenings Magazine

HIGH SCHOOL VERSION

Evil Dead the musical at Lab Theater

It’s a killer of a good time when the teen theater campers present Evil Dead the Musical: High School Version for a limited run of five performances July 19 – 22. This summer, The Laboratory Theater of Florida is holding a theatrical summer camp for teens that covers not only singing, acting and choreography, but also covers the basics of set design and build, lighting design and implementation, sound, stage management, costume planning and creation, and prop sourcing and creation. For 3 weeks starting July 2 and culminating in five, full performances of Evil Dead the Musical: High School Version. None of the swearing—all of the blood! This fulllength adaptation of the hilarious Off-Broadway musical takes all the elements of the cult classic films The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness and combines them into one of the craziest theatrical experiences of all time. Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It’s up to Ash (a housewares employee turned demon-killing hero) and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons tell bad jokes ... and all to music. Songs like “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons” and “What the Heck Was That?” will have audiences rolling in their seats and screaming for more and more blood. This show has fun with the horror genre and, in doing so, appeals to a wide audience. And with this combination of blood, jokes, cheesy effects and awe-

some musical numbers, Evil Dead The Musical (High School Version) is unlike any show you’ve ever seen. Director Yoanna Guerorguiev notes, “What attracted me to this show was its clever use of comedy. There are aspects of physical comedy that will make audiences laugh without it being over the top. There are comedic irony and literal bad puns. Even the set and props are comedic in character, and all of this gives the students the opportunity to really embrace the show and make it their own. I’ve never read a script that made me laugh so hard and made me think about all the possible ways we could subtly make scenes even funnier.” Assistant director Madelaine Hayes adds, “Evil Dead is a show that not only knows it's ridiculous but takes pride in it. It blends homage and parody together so that people who enjoy the original movies and people that prefer a laugh are all guaranteed to have a fun time. Plus, the local high schoolers are showcasing their talent and creativity, bringing something fresh to a classic movie and genre." Evil Dead the Musical: High School Edition is offering performances July 19, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. and July 21 and 22 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase on www.Brownpapertickets.com or by calling the box office at 239-218-0481. SoCo Cultural District more than one monthly event Since June, the SoCo Cultural District has shifted its focus to the originating idea for an established district of arts and culture. Around ten businesses within the block of McGregor Blvd. to Rarco Blvd. joined forces in 2016 to start a monthly art crawl event called SoCo Second Saturday. Now, these businesses south of Colonial Boulevard - where the acronym SoCo is derived - hope to maintain its popularity through a serious of projects and events held on different days of the month, every month and all year long. “SoCo is every day now,” says David Acevedo, who created the original second Saturday event and helped incorporate the cultural district, alongside other community 16 - July 2018

leaders such as Lydia Black from the Alliance for the Arts, Melissa Vogt from the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre and Chip Withrow from Yoga Bird, among others. “During these last 19 months of SoCo [Second Saturday], many ups and downs happened, but we feel like it is time for the next step in this process,” adds Acevedo, who opened DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts in the Royal Palm Square a few months before the introduction of the first event. “I feel like the community knows we are here now and that there are amazing things happening here every day, not just one night a month,” adds Acevedo, who is also co-founder of the Union Artist Studios. The www.socoswfl.com website has been refurbished as a hub for all things SoCo, including a comprehensive calendar of events for all businesses within the district. The very

popular SoCo map has been modified to be used as a cross-promoting tool, inviting patrons to stroll around the variety of venues and make the best of their visit. In addition, the map will include information and even coupons for discounts at various locations. Within the SoCo Cultural District, there is a fantastic dinner theater which entertains over 170,000 guests annually with amazing productions, a center for arts and arts education in a ten-acre campus, hosting significant art exhibitions and counting on an arts curriculum that is second to none, an art loft with more than twelve artists and studios, a cooperative art gallery with more than twenty-five artists and monthly exhibition receptions for guest artists, a very popular yoga studio, a trendy barber shop, a Swedish goods store, a dance studio, three restaurants and much more. Bradford Hermann masks at Davis Art Center

Bradford Hermann

18 - July 2018

This July, Bradford Hermann brings his eccentric art to downtown Fort Myers. “A Head of the Past” is an exhibition created by artist Bradford Shaw Hermann consisting primarily of masks using different materials, repurposed man-made materials, as well as natural materials. The first discovered mask in human history dates as far back as 7,000 B.C. They could date back much further but the materials used (leather/wood) did not survive. Masks can also be merely an idea in order to conceal identities. These are all examples of human masks, but, humans are not the only animals to use them. Most living creatures use some variation of a mask. Whether it be for protection, dominance, courtship, warning and/or survival. A mask is an object normally worn on the face, typically for protection, disguise, performance, or entertainment. Masks have been used since antiquity for both ceremonial and practical purposes. The use of masks in rituals or ceremonies is a

very ancient common practice across the world, although masks can also be worn for protection, in hunting, in sports, in feasts, or in wars, or simply used as ornamentation. But there are also the psychological masks, the persona, the social face that humans present to the world, a mask designed, on the one hand, to make a definite impression upon others, and on the other, to conceal the true nature of the individual. “A Head of the Past” can be best understood via a quote from E.E. Cummings: “The greatest battle we face as human beings is the battle to protect our true selves from the selves the world wants us to become.” Experience this captivating exhibition that speculates on the human condition. The exhibit opens in the Capital Gallery on Friday, July 6 during Art Walk from 6 to 10 p.m. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District. Lois Selfon exhibit at Naples

Depot Museum July 5 - Sept. 29

The Naples Depot Museum presents Mysteries of Nature by local artist Lois Selfon. The exhibition will be on display July 5 to Sept. 29 at the Naples Depot Museum, 1051 5th Avenue South. A free opening reception sponsored by the Friends of the Collier County Museums will be held from 5 to 7 pm. on Friday, July 6 and is open to the public. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Texas, Lois has enjoyed a creative life; residing in Naples for more than 20 years. At eight years old, she wiped her grandmother’s blackboard and filled it with a chalk drawing of a bearded iris that Lois admired in her grandmother’s garden. Lois’s childhood love of art and gardening matured into an appreciation of nature’s breadth and our spiritual connection with its mysteries. Lois’s broad vision of nature looks at the real and the abstract possibilities, through micro and macro lenses from the smallest flower petal to the sublime mountains. Lois has been freshly

Happenings Magazine

inspired by the plants and mountain ranges in the Smoky Mountains and the striking and resilient beauty of Southwest Florida. Drawing from both areas’ vibrant art communities and her years of study in art, Lois’s vision of nature and her strong spirituality radiate through her work. Her art has been recognized as being in the tradition of the famed transcendental artists of New Mexico, who pioneered the concept that spirituality can also be shown in abstract art. Mysteries of Nature captures the intensity of the natural world, and Lois’s intimacy with and love of it. “I am conscious of a balancing act between letting the colors and movements present themselves in non-objective form and my artist’s responsibility to use proper technical skills. If I am successful, my art helps the viewer better see and appreciate the unexplained wonders nature offers.” For more info, contact the Naples Depot Museum at (239) 262-6525 or visit online at www.colliermuseums.com.

Cape Coral Library gallery showcases the art of Gerhard, Maurer & Grattan

Changing exhibits are featured in the spacious art gallery of the Cape Coral Public Library, which is located at 921 SW 39th Terrace. The current exhibit will run July 5 through Aug. 27. The gallery will exhibit large scale landscapes by Ehren Fritz Gerhard in the alcove area of the library’s art gallery. The artist, who now resides in Cape Coral, has a master of fine arts degree from Arizona State University. He is currently adjunct professor of art at Florida Gulf Coast University, art exhibitions director for the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs and director of the Bonita Springs National Art Festivals. Portraits in oil by Fred Maurer will be displayed on the walls of the gallery hall. The artist was born and raised in Bayonne, N.J., and has enjoyed painting for over five

decades. He was first inspired to create by his aunt, a talented painter who provided him with encouragement as well as all the necessary art supplies. He has lived in Cape Coral for 23 years now, and painting provides great satisfaction during his retirement. Fred Maurer does portraits of Native Americans, children, explorers and frontiersmen. Creations by Martha Grattan will be featured in the gallery’s three display cases. Visitors may recall Martha’s distinctive artwork in clay that was on exhibit several years ago at the library. She has now expanded her repertoire to include jewelry and T-shirt designs, and these will also be part of the exhibit. The second annual Summer Art Market is set for Friday, July 6, and Saturday, July 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the center’s Loranger

AMERICANA COMMUNITY MUSIC ASSOCIATION

Mean Mary James

Sixth anniversary show, Mean Mary, Sally Barris

The Americana Community Music Association celebrates its sixth anniversary in June with a special showcase at the end of the month. The ACMA 6th Anniversary Show is scheduled for Saturday, June 30. Passing the five-year mark and into their sixth year, the ACMA can safely say they are here to stay. Keeping true to their mission of supporting original independent music, it has been easy because it’s “all about the music.” The Fort Myers area is now known as a strong songwriting community. Over the years, the ACMA has become instrumental in prompting and encouraging original music. The ACMA Sunday songwriters circle is the perfect place for songwriters to present new songs, gain experience, and be mentored. Every show at the ACMA showcase local songwriters. If you enjoy the annual Island Hopper Songwriter Fest in the fall, you will love hearing local songwriters share their songs and the story’s behind the songs, in a quiet Listen Room. The ACMA will present a special night of music emceed by Dan Philgreen. The musician lineup is all founding songwriter members that joined the first year: Joe Virga, Ray Cerbone, Carlene Thissen, Roy Schneider, Bill Metts, Scott Dozier, Dan Philgreen, Mike McMillan, Kim Mayfield, Houseboat Jim, Alan Branford, Ken Crosby and Ricky Baker. Many others wanted to attend but will be out of town. Join the ACMA as they celebrate the only way they know how, by making music. The ACMA will host the Florida Music Food Initiative for a benefit concert/food drive on July 21. Join them for a fun evening of music for a good cause. 34 - July 2018

Performers include Joe Virga, Roy Schneider and Kim Mayfield, Bear and Robert (Cindy Bear and Franc Robert), Frankie J and the Chicken Parade and James Hawkins. Admission is free with a food donation for a local food bank. Florida Music Food Initiative, Inc. was formed for the purpose of producing a collection of songs by Florida songwriters for CDs to generate funds in support of individuals and families experiencing hunger and homelessness here in Florida. All proceeds from the sales of the CDs and donations to FMFI (after direct expenses which have been kept to a minimum) are split between Feeding Florida f/k/a Florida Association of Food Banks and The Florida Coalition for the Homeless. These organizations provide food and shelter to those in need here in our State. All individuals participating in this project are donating their time and talent. Because of the tremendous response of songwriters, the initial compilation consists of a double CD called “Am I My Brothers’ Keeper?” and in 2015 a second CD "Stay Positive” was completed. The FMFI holds free benefit concerts/food drives throughout the state and donates all food items collected to food banks in the areas where the events are held. Multi-Instrumentalist "Mean" Mary James returns to the ACMA on July 28. An award-winning musician/writer and fan favorite (over 9 million views on her YouTube videos), Mean Mary literally grew-up in music. She evolved from a child prodigy who played for tips on the streets of Nashville (“startling talent” said The Tennessean) to a seasoned performer and headliner of over 4,000 festivals and concerts (“The voice of a ragged angel combined with the banjo playing of the Happenings Magazine

devil,” says No Depression). Deering Banjo’s named her their Goodtime Ambassador, and Janet Deering describes her banjo playing as giving her “chills.” Equally versatile on guitar, fiddle, and 8 other instruments, Mary is known internationally for her lightning-fast fingers, haunting vocals, and intricate story songs. As a highenergy performer that thrives on variety and as a songwriter that chooses unusual subject matters, anything from ghost pirates to demon guitars could romp through a Mean Mary show. ACMA'S own Millie Van Horn will open for Mean Mary. Millie has her own special story to tell and she does it through song. Millie is the winner of the "People's Choice" award songwriter contest at the 2017 Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center in Fort Myers The ACMA welcomes Sally Barris on Aug. 4. Sally had so much fun at her last concert that she asked to come back again. Sally Barris is an A-list Nashville songwriter who has had songs covered by such top-level artists as Kathy Mattea, Martina McBride, and Lee Ann Womack. Her song “Let The Wind Chase You” recorded by Trisha Yearwood and Keith Urban, received a Grammy nomination for vocal collaboration in 2009. While her writing credits mightily impress, fans and peers are most captivated by her bright spirit and expressive mountain soprano. Dirty Linen says, “Barris knows how to write lyrics that are as forthright as a stream of clear water and how to support them with melodies that share that quality.” Sally also performs with dobro player and gui-

Sally Barris tarist Chas Williams and mandolin player Jason Bailey as "Sally Barris & The Birmingham Boys." The Minnesota native has performed Mountain Stage, New Bedford Summer Fest, Wildflower Arts & Music Festival and The Kerrville Folk Festival. Sally is currently touring with her new CD “The Road in Me.” Dan Philgreen will open for Sally Barris. After failed attempts at violin and piano, Dan picked up the guitar in the 7th grade. Like many of his age he was very influenced by the many singer-songwriters that were at the height of their popularity during the ‘70s when he was in high school, as well as the folk-rock bands of that era, such as Crosby, Stills, and

Nash. He has played in church for much of his life but has also always had a love for folk music which never had much of an outlet before his moving to Fort Myers. The founding of the Americana Community Music Association opened a door of opportunity to develop and share his music in a community of folks who are also passionate about this genre. Though he dabbled in song-writing earlier in his life and had a few songs to his credit, the inspiration of the ACMA’s songwriter’s circle spurred him to write many more songs over the past few years. His playing has also developed to a higher point in the last decade and he says that, with age, his voice is finally starting to cooperate as well. Singer songwriters circle is held every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation at 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. The circle is for acoustic songwriters of all levels. Songs and experiences are shared in a non-judgmental, casual atmosphere. No membership required. The Americana Community Music Association provides a venue for local and touring artists, many are award winning performers in the Americana/folk community. YouTube any of these artists and be prepared to be impressed by the talent that is available to you all year round for a cost of $10 to $15 donation. The ACMA is a non-sectarian not for profit organization. Most concerts are held at All Faiths Congregation located at 2756 McGregor Blvd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and shows start at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.americanacma.org.

At every level and in often unexpected ways, his truths are expressed in melody, lyrics, hooks and sounds … but his reality goes even deeper than that. Bryant’s heritage is defined by music. His upbringing, his craft, his inspiration and his obsessions are all centered in the same – which is good – because there’s no other way to explain how a 24-year-old Texan could already be a top-flight guitar player, head-turning songwriter, Red Bow recording artist and co-producer of his debut album. Bryant focuses his muse on the commonalities people share. “We all have a destination,” he says. “We all have dreams we want to follow. I’m no different than anybody else, I just sing about it. It’s my job to put the party on and give people a good reason to

Hurricane 3D film at IMAG

Playing at IMAG History & Science Center now, Hurricane 3D introduces audiences to the strength of the Atlantic hurricane, one of the most powerful hurricanes. Hurricane 3D gives insight into the science behind this phenomenon, as well as a sense of the visceral impact experienced by those affected. Learn how hurricanes are monitored to keep people safe, and the ways rescue teams mobilize to help. Discover that, although hurricanes are shatteringly destructive, they play a surprisingly beneficial role in revitalizing earth’s ecosystems. Entrance to the film is included in museum admission. Guests can choose from eight show times throughout the day. Filmmakers teamed up with NASA to follow the footsteps of a hurricane, which begins its journey as a sandstorm in Senegal, heads west across the Atlantic, building momentum, then blows into the jungles of the Caribbean. With winds up to 124 mph, impacting 12 countries in its path, the hurricane is the film’s main character. The supporting cast consists of the men, women, plants and animals it encounters on its journey. As Hurricane 3D explores the chaos and disruption of homes and lives, it reveals the amazing stories of emergency management teams and first responders, who bring hope to those living in the path of the hurricane, and the strength of new purpose in their recovery efforts. With visions of resilient nature and rainforests revitalized by the storm, Hurricane 3D captures a timeless cycle of destruction and renewal. The film was shot over 280 days, in 12 countries, and took five years to produce. Hurricane 3D is an nWave Pictures Distribution release of a Ouragan Films production. The film is produced by Jacqueline Farmer, directed by Cyril Barbançon, Andy Byatt & Jacqueline Farmer, and features music by Yann Tiersen. Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse

With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.

Hemingway Days celebrate literary legend July 17 - 22

Ernest Hemingway fans can celebrate the late author’s literary accomplishments and colorful Key West lifestyle Tuesday through Sunday, July 17 - 22. The 38th annual Hemingway Days festivities salute the legacy of the Nobel Prize winner who lived and wrote on the island for most of the 1930s. Events include the famed Hemingway® Look-Alike Contest, prose and poetry readings, the tongue-in-cheek “Running of the Bulls,” symposium presentations and a film evening, a look-alike “party” on Hemingway’s July 21 birthday, running and paddleboarding challenges, a lively street fair and a high-stakes threeday marlin tournament recalling his passion for Florida Keys angling. The festival begins Tuesday, July 17, with a Hemingway museum exhibit “open house” at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front St. At 6 p.m. Tuesday, the Key West Hemingway Symposium is to feature scholars Kirk Curnutt, Ashley Oliphant and Brewster Chamberlin; Hemingway interpreter and playwright/author Brian Gordon Sinclair; and writer Cristen Hemingway Jaynes, Ernest’s great-granddaughter. The festival’s other literary offerings include the “Voices, Places, Inspirations” author readings, “Papa’s Poems” presented by the Key West Poetry Guild and an evening spotlighting Sinclair’s “The 54 - July 2018

Hemingway Monologues” film and seven-book series. The latter event also includes the presentation of Canada’s Hemingway on Stage Award. Those whose resemblance to Ernest is literal rather than literary can compete in Sloppy Joe’s annual Hemingway® Look-Alike Contest. Past winners choose the new “Papa” from 125 or more bearded contestants at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, 201 Duval St., a watering hole frequented by the author. Preliminary rounds are scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 19 and 20, with the final round Saturday, July 21 — the 119th anniversary of Hemingway’s birth. The “Papas” also enliven other festival events including Saturday’s infamous “Running of the Bulls.” Set for 1 p.m. outside Sloppy Joe’s with manmade bull replicas, the offbeat event recalls Hemingway’s fascination with the bull ring. Held in conjunction with the festival is the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition coordinated by Ernest’s granddaughter, author Lorian Hemingway. Hemingway Days concludes Sunday with Sloppy Joe’s annual arm-wrestling championship and a historian-led trolley tour of Key West sites related to the island’s most famous literary resident. The Key Lime Festival salutes the creamy pie and the tiny yellow fruit that inspired it. Made of condensed milk, egg yolks and Key lime juice, the pie filling is typically nestled in a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream or meringue. The festival begins Saturday, June 30, with a free 11 a.m. kick-off party at the Key West Lighthouse, 938 Whitehead St. Highlights include a contest where entrants attempt to drop actual Key lime pies from atop the lighthouse — without damaging the pies. Saturday also features the Key Lime Cocktail Sip & Stroll, whose participants

can sample Key lime martinis, margaritas and other limey libations at local watering holes. Events Sunday, July 1, include a festive waterfront brunch and the annual Key Lime Pie Hop. The latter takes foodies on a stroll to sample five variations of the famed dessert — including an Oreo-crusted version at the pie’s presumed birthplace, the Curry Mansion at 511 Caroline St. Lime lovers can sample Key lime rum Monday while touring the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, 105 Simonton St., and discover island city landmarks on the Key Lime Scavenger Hunt. The festival’s final event, and undoubtedly its messiest, is the Mile-High Key Lime Pie Eatin’ Contest set for Wednesday, July 4. Entrants must attempt to devour an entire 9-inch pie, topped with mountains of whipped cream, without using their hands.
