Publisher’s Spotlight Independence Day

Millions of Americans will celebrate this month with fireworks, barbecues, parades, festivals and special events. And Southwest Floridians are no exception. Many community activities are planned locally on the Fourth of July. Cape Coral Red, White and Boom will have a variety of familyfriendly activities and live music by national country artists LoCash. Of course, a big fireworks display is also planned. The River District Alliance will host the annual Freedom Fest in downtown Fort Myers. Live music by Thunder Beach Band, activities for kids of all ages and fireworks are on tap in the River District. In Naples, the parade is in the morning and fireworks are set for the evening. Bonita Springs will kick off the day with a parade. In the afternoon, Star Spangled Bonita begins in Riverside Park with live music by the Mark Vee Band, a children’s play area and fireworks at night. On Sanibel, the islanders have a parade in the morning and fireworks at night. Fort Myers Beach also has a parade in the morning and fireworks at night. 4th Fest takes place in Laishley Park in Punta Gorda and includes live music, family activities and a fireworks display. Englewood will also celebrate with fireworks on July 4th. Miracle baseball fans will get a special fireworks display after that night’s game. Of course, these are just some of the major events taking place in SW Florida. No matter what your plans are for the patriotic holiday, remember to play it safe ... don’t over indulge and leave the big fireworks to the professionals. A happy and safe Fourth of July is always the best way to celebrate the freedoms we are blessed to have in the United States.

Our biggest venue, Hertz Arena, is building a solid concert schedule for the second half of this year. That list includes Disturbed, Julio Iglesias, Alabama, Don McLean, ZZ Top, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar, Night Ranger and Marc Anthony. Seminole Casino Hotel in Immokalee welcomes Here Come the Mummies, Lee Greenwood and The Gatlin Brothers this fall and winter. At The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers, you can catch Josh Ward, Logan Mize, Scott Stapp, Casey Donahew Band, Mitchell Tenpenny, Billy Currington, Sebastian Bach and Randy Houser. Rock on,

Cultural Park Theater announces 2019-20 lineup

By Michael Moran Season ticket sales open on July 15 for the 57th season of Cape Coral’s live theater located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd. First in the new season will be the family classic musical, The Little Mermaid (Sept. 13 through Sept. 22), followed by the Florida premiere of Joe Simonelli’s The Ghost in the Meadow (Sept. 27 through Oct. 6). Fans of old-fashioned ghost stories will enjoy this creepy thriller. When two sisters relocate from Manhattan to an old farm house in upstate New York, they soon realize that they may not be alone in the house. An old boyfriend drops in to visit and when the strange occurrences continue he calls on the services of a psychic colleague to try to quell the restless spirits. An old fashioned thriller written just for the stage ... Simonelli has written an atmospheric piece that delivers plenty of chills with a liberal dose of tension breaking comic relief. A real Halloween treat. Following will be the opening of another classic play, On Golden Pond, (Oct. 25 through Nov. 3). A 1979 play by Ernest Thompson, the plot focuses on an aging couple, Ethel and Norman Thayer, who spend each summer at their home on a lake called Golden Pond. During the year the story takes place, they are visited by daughter, Chelsea, with her fiancé, Billy Ray, and his son, Billy Ray Jr. The play explores the often turbulent relationship the young woman shared with her father growing up, and the difficulties faced by a couple Happenings Magazine

in the twilight years of a long marriage. The continuing productions of the season will include the comedies Same Time Next Year, The Owl and the Pussycat and Nana’s Naughty Knickers. THEATRE

LABORATORY THEATER OF FLORIDA

The Wolves July 11 - 14 The Times Critics Pick and Pulitzer Prize-nominated The Wolves by Sarah DeLappe is being offered as a limited engagement of five performances by The Laboratory Theater of Florida Arts Education program July 11 - 14. The Wolves is set in an indoor soccer facility. Each scene depicts the nine teenage girls who make up the soccer team The Wolves as they are warming up before their weekly games. Left quad. Right quad. Lunge. A girl's indoor soccer team warms up. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals. Director Madelaine Hayes says, “There's something about being an adult and consuming media that's geared toward teens; especially teen girls. There's no way, out of the presence of adults, that kids swear that much, know so much about mature themes and have so many intelligent opinions about the world around them. Looking from the outside, we tend to

think, 'do they really talk like that?' They do. And they crave to make art like that, too. There will be ten talented girls who talk like this, think like this, ready to make art like this. It's a demanding, indemand script that I'm looking forward to tackling with an enthusiastic cast and crew." This summer, The Laboratory Theater of Florida is holding an immersive theatrical summer camp for teens that covers not only singing, acting and choreography, but also covers the basics of set design and build, lighting design and implementation, sound, stage management, costume planning and creation, and prop sourcing and creation. The arts education camp is three weeks starting June 24 and culminating in five performances of The Wolves by Sarah DeLappe. Performance dates are July 11, 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. and July 13 and 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase online at www.Brownpapertickets.com or by calling the box office at 239-218-0481. I Hate Hamlet on stage in Bonita THEATRE

The Center for Performing Arts presents I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick on stage July 18 - 21 in Bonita Springs. Andrew Rally seems to have it all: Celebrity and acclaim from his starring role in a hit television series; a rich, beautiful girlfriend; a glamorous, devoted agent; the perfect New York apartment; and the chance to play Hamlet in Central Park. There are, however, a couple of glitches in paradise. Andrew's series has been canceled; his girlfriend is clinging to her virginity with unyielding conviction; and he has no desire to play Hamlet. When Andrew's agent visits him, she reminisces about her brief romance with John Barrymore many years ago, in Andrew's apartment. This prompts a seance to summon his ghost. From the moment

Barrymore returns, dressed in high Shakespearean garb, Andrew's life is no longer his own. Barrymore, fortified by champagne and ego, presses Andrew to accept the part and fulfill his actor's destiny. The action becomes more hilarious with the entrance of Andrew's deal-making friend from LA, spouting the laid-back hype of the Coast and offering Andrew a fabulous new TV deal worth millions of dollars. The laughs are nonstop as Andrew wrestles with his conscience, Barrymore, his sword, and the fact that he fails as Hamlet in Central Park. Performances of I Hate Hamlet will be held July 18, 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. and July 20 and 21 at 2 p.m. at the Center for Performing Arts - Moe Auditorium, 10150 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs. The 2019-20 Season has been announced and includes: Presenting Bedlam’s Saint Joan Oct. 19 to Nov. 3: From the criticallyacclaimed New York-based theater company comes an artful, and searingly bold and humorous adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s tale of Joan of Arc. Recognized in “Time” magazine and “New York Times’” top critic picks, this intimate stripped-down production captures the epic story of the martyred heroine in her unforgettable quest to restore France to greatness. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Life Radio Play Nov. 16 to Dec. 29: Adapted by Joe Landry, this heartwarming American classic presented as a 1940’s radio show retells the story of Bedford Falls and the Bailey Family. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve. Native Gardens Jan. 11 to Feb. 2: To be announced May 2019, this runaway hit has been dubbed one of the hottest new plays and “a true breath of comic fresh air” by “DC Theatre Scene.” Gardens and cultures clash in this lively and frothy production 12 - July 2019

about one of life’s most serious subjects: DIRT. Friendly neighbors become unreasonable enemies who involve themselves in a variety of backyard antics in this comedy of good intentions and bad manners. The Lady Demands Satisfaction Feb. 15 to March 15: Mayhem and chaos quickly arise in this hilarious, swashbuckling comedy by Arthur M. Jolly. Set in the mid-1700’s, masterful swordsplay and mistaken identities collide with conniving suitors, and young maidens to bring to life this actionpacked fun production. The Lion in Winter March 28 to April 19: Set during Christmas in 1183, King Henry II and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine are embroiled in a wickedly amusing battle over which son will inherit the crown. It’s a highstakes political game of chess, and the future of England hangs in the balance. This Tony Award-winning production by James Goldman went on to become an instant classic and an Academy Award winning film starring Katherine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole. The Niceties May 2 to 17: When Zoe is called into her history professor’s office to discuss a paper about the American Revolution, a civil conversation transforms into an urgent and personal debate. As the conflict intensifies, both women quickly pass the point of no return and must face

the consequences. Hailed as “bristling and provocative” by The New York Times, this explosive drama by Eleanor Burgess forces an examination on the ways society judges, debates, and condemns. “We are excited to present a bold season showcasing Tony Award-winning productions, critically acclaimed actors, many straight from New York, and a world-class creative team,” said Gulfshore Playhouse’s founder and producing artistic director Kristen Coury. “Coupled with hilarious, timeless classics and new, thought-provoking plays, this season will captivate audiences who are looking for a taste of New York right in their backyard.” Subscriptions and single tickets are on sale for the 2019-20 season. Regular ticket pricing and single tickets start at $37. For purchase information, visit www.GulfshorePlayhouse.org or contact 866-811-4111. Cirque du Soleil: Corteo Corteo, the latest and most enchanting Cirque du Soleil’s arena production is now touring in North America. The show will visit Estero at the Hertz Arena from July 17 to July 21 for a limited run of seven performances. This unique production, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, first premiered in Montreal under the Big Top in April 2005. Since then, the show has been a great success and has amazed 8 million people in 19 countries on four continents. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.

The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality. The concept and disposition of the stage bring the audience in a theatrical atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo.

The cast of Corteo includes 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from all around the world. Originally composed of 20 street performers in 1984, Cirque du Soleil completely reinvented circus arts and went on to become a world leader in artistic entertainment. Established in Montreal, the Canadian organization has brought wonder and delight to over 190 million spectators with 42 productions that have taken place in close to 450 cities in 60 countries. Cirque du Soleil currently has over 4,000 employees, including 1,400 artists, from nearly 50 countries. In 2018 alone, 20 shows are being presented simultaneously throughout the world. Tickets for Corteo are available now online. For more information, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/corteo. 14 - July 2019

Visions of Clean Water, Covers

on display at Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center

The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center hosts two great art shows in July. On display in the Capital Gallery (upstairs) is Covers by John “Crusher” Healy, an exhibition that pays homage to the album cover artists of previous and exciting musical decades. Featured in the Grand Atrium are six award-winning photographers. Katy Danca Galli, Rob Hoovis, Paul Marcellini, Alexis Horn, Dan Ivetic and Kyle van Emmerik come together in a group exhibition titled Visions of Clean Water, benefitting Captains for Clean Water and the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation. Both shows open on Friday, July 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. during Art Walk and will be on display through July 26. Admission is $1. Just as a local band covers songs of their music heroes, John “Crusher” Healy‘s work covers artists’ album covers of days past: enlarging them, making them three dimensional, and taking artistic liberties. John likes to work with his hands: drawing, painting, sculpting, and repurposing items into new forms. This particular series of work reflects his love for bands, their music, and the artists who designed these iconic album covers. Growing up during the ‘70s and ’80s, he experienced an explosion of pop culture and high energy music. His Grandma, Elsie, bought his 20 - July 2019

first three cassette tapes (all KISS albums) which helped to create the “rock and roll beast” he is today. His love for art and music has greatly affected his life, even changing the direction of it. After attending hundreds of live shows and concerts over the years, his passion for music has become a huge part of who he is and inspired him to pursue art. Please note, there may be a couple unexpected, famous guests and theatrical “treats” awaiting attendees of his exhibition’s opening night. Florida. Each exhibiting photographer has a unique photographic style, and each is fully devoted to where they call home here in SW Florida. They all wake up at the crack of dawn, lugging 30 pounds of equipment just to catch the perfect highlight of the sunrise glazing the water, and each photographer has seen the gulf at its best and at its worst. The ongoing water quality crisis has affected our region deeply, from farmers and fishermen to artists and entrepreneurs, highlighting a need for unity and change to protect the fragile ecosystem of SW Florida. Organizer of Visions of Clean Water, Katy Danca Galli says, “Organizations like SCCF and Captains have worked tirelessly, dedicating their lives to this cause, and I would love to give back to these ocean warriors.” She continues, “Our lifeblood is water. It feeds our bodies and in SW loridaL, our pocketbooks as well. We need clean water, and if we have no blue, we will have no green.” Galli is a professional underwater photographer, former photo editor for Scuba Diving magazine, recipient of the Lee County VCB artist residency for 2017, and winner of competitions as first place in the wide angle category for the Florida Skin Divers, and Our World Underwater. Frame Gallery & Gifts,

Lorne’s Gallery in Cape Coral

Cape Coral gallery owners Barbara and Lorne Hosack have spent most of their lives producing and selling coastal art. This family operation owns and operates Lorne’s Gallery at Tarpon Point Marina and Frame Gallery & Gifts on Del Prado Boulevard. Aside from being extremely interesting to pass through and look at all the sundries at Lorne's Gallery the view of all the wonderful boats and restaurants is something that looks like it should be in Naples. If you spend five minutes sauntering through the 3,000 squarefoot gallery, you won't have seen it all. There's so much to see. With over 500 pictures stacked here and there and over 20,000 images in print exclusive to Lorne's Gallery and their other gallery, Frame Gallery and Gifts, there's too much to comprehend. Additionally, the galleries offer high end printing. They have thousands of images that are exclusive to them. “That means that we own the originals, we own the printing rights, and we do the printing ourselves,” says Lorne. “And then after printing, they are the framers we frame small we frame big and we frame with our customers in mind. We are picky with our art and with the framing process.” The main gallery, that's been located on Del Prado Boulevard in Cape Coral for 29

years, is across from Wal-mart and approximately 5,000 square feet. For those customers who have a hard time deciding what image they will like in their home, they offer something called a 24-hour check out. This allows the buyer to take a framed piece of art home or several and look at that them in their own environment. This really helps an individual find the perfect piece for their home. Frame Gallery and Gifts is located at 1830 Del Prado Blvd. in Cape Coral, and can be reached by calling 239-5745111. Lorne’s Gallery is located in unit 105 at the Marina Village at Tarpon Point in Cape Coral and can be reached by calling 239-945-0866. Visit online at www.framegalleryandgifts.com

Mirrors, Reflections or Cantos at ACT Gallery ART

Arts or ACT Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, July 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. for its annual open themed group exhibit Mirrors, Reflections or Cantos. ACT Gallery will feature a wide array of group artists that entered the themed open art exhibit. Artists were given three creative themes using reflections, mirrors or cantos to create paintings, sculpture and more. The judge will pick the first, second, third and honorable mention prizes on Wednesday, July 3. Cash prizes will be awarded at the July 5 Art Walk. Mirrors and reflections are enormously important in art, and so common a theme, that you should keep an eye out for them: They will help explain the work's underlying meaning. The Greek root for Plato's word idea, eidos, literally means not just image or likeness but an image reflected in water or mirror. Mirrors reflect light and thus reflect the world around us. Spiritually, light has symbolic attachment to illumination, awareness and wisdom. Therefore, in terms of spiritual symbolism, mirrors reflect truth. They reflect what is.

Canto is a principal form of division in medieval and modern long poetry. The word canto is derived from the Italian word for "song" or "singing", which comes from the Latin cantus, "song", from the infinitive verb canere, "to sing." There is no specific format, construction or style for a canto and it is not limited to any one type of poetry. It is the curator’s hope that a canto can be incorporated into the 2 or 3D works. Attendees can expect to see an array of eclectic, surreal, whimsical and realistic paintings, sculptures, watercolors, collage,

Claudia Goode

oils, and photography for this month’s themed exhibit. Entries proved thought provoking and imaginative. The art ranged from professional to emerging, self-trained and “outsider” to highly skilled; there is truly something for everyone. Come view these creative artworks from over 75 artists for this annual group exhibit and support ACT Gallery located at 2265 First St. in downtown Fort Myers. This exhibit continues through July 29.

Irma Backelant exhibit at Cape Coral Library

Irma Backelant

22 - July 2019

Artist photographer Irma Backelant has never made an image she can’t transform into something more than the obvious. An exhibition of those images, often described as ethereal and mysterious, is titled “Face to Face.” The exhibit opens July 2 in the art gallery of the Cape Coral Library, located at 921 SW 39th Terrace and continues through Aug. 29. A confirmed abstractionist, Backelant considers herself a digital artist more than a straightforward photographer. She explains, “When I see an object, I make a good photographic image and then I create a new one through my eclectic imagination and digital editing. I do so by following my curiosity and sense of the aesthetic to move the photo beyond the realm of reality to an altered reality, a different or enhanced perception.” She further states that she is intrigued by the human face and all it encompasses. “A face tells a story be it of a race, a culture, a feeling or age. And then I try to have my rendering of it tell the

story I see and hopefully to nudge the observer to see in my art their own interpretation - their own story if you will. That is the open endedness of abstraction.” The end result of her adventure is a juxtaposition of elements of the original photograph to a painterly rendering that expresses her eclectic imagination. Using the original photo or, as she says, her “blank canvas” she uses what she calls filters -- colors, scenes, that create a scrim or a landscape -- that dramatize the final work. In addition to her photographic images, this adventurous alchemist will exhibit resin sculptures of faces, two and three dimensional portraits and masks. Changing exhibitions are sponsored by the Friends of Cape Coral Library and are designed to afford local artists the opportunity to share their work in a public forum without fees or commissions. Exhibits may be viewed during regular library business hours. For more info, contact Monica Rahman, art gallery chairperson, at 239-258-2991. Happenings Magazine

Naples Bay Resort expands MUSIC

concerts into the summer

Riding on the success of its winter concerts, the Naples Bay Marina has expanded its musical event to the summer months. Enjoy the sounds of Motown and a Chicago tribute band at The Pointe, an intimate, waterfront venue located at 1500 Fifth Avenue South in Naples. “We are building on the success of our winter concert series, and bringing music options to our local residents for the summer,” says Paul Ditheridge, director of marketing and sales at Naples Bay Resort. The summer series kicked off in June and continues through August. Back to Chicago - A legacy of rock and horns, plays Sunday, July 14 and Aug. 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. Back To Chicago is the area’s only true musical tribute to the famous band Chicago. Do you remember ”25 or 6 to 4,” “Beginnings,” “Does Anybody Know What Time it Is?” What about “You’re My Inspiration?” Concert attendees can enjoy an evening of a legacy of rock and horns dedicated to providing a musical experience next to none. Band members include Rick Grootveld - sax, flute, vocals & percussion; Stu Shelton - keyboards, vocals, sound engineer & arranger; Doug “Baby Face” Thompson - percussion & vocals; Denny Scott - guitar & vocals; Alex MacDonald - trombone, vocals, percussion & arranger; Manny Lima - trumpet, vocals & percussion; Jimmy Allen - bass guitar and vocals; Guy Franklin vocals, percussion, creative; and Frank Gump – lead vocals. An evening of Motown will be presented Sunday, July 28 and Aug. 4 by The Ex-Bachelors. Both of those shows will run from 7 to 9 p.m. The Ex Bachelors were formed as an original group of talented musicians playing some great original songs and also some

of their favorite rock & roll and blues songs. The Ex-Bachelors are a six-piece Motown and soul band. They are an eclectic group of musicians from all over the world that came together in 2012 to create a unique band. All the members are multi instrumentalists, so it’s not unusual to see them switch instruments (sometimes mid song!) or even play two at the same time. Whether it’s a funky Motown groove or a soulful ballad, the Ex-Bachelors are sure to move you. Band members include John Azarow, guitars, bass and vocals; Lee Blackston, bass, piano and vocals; Cary Vhugen, guitar, bass and vocals; Rob Platter, drums; Simon Brooker, horns; and Alex Granados, trombone. The unique venue is intimate for the entertainers, and the room is set up to emulate the style of cabaret theater shows, Ditheridge says. The concert series was started “recognizing the demand for live music in the south Naples market in an indoor concert environment - which is lacking in the market,” adds Ditheridge. Tickets are $45 for each concert. For those interested in dinner and a concert, those tickets are $85 each. Buffet dinner is followed by the tribute concert (dinner is served The Ex-Bachelors will play July 28 and Aug. 4 at Naples Bay Resort & from 5 to 6:30 p.m.). Ray Cerbone & Alan Rhody on the ACMA stage in July

The Americana Community Music Association kicks off summer with a full schedule of all original music. Ray Cerbone’s CD release party with special appearance by "The Trio" featuring Gil Jusino and Maria Valsi will take place on Saturday, July 13. One of the founding members of the Fort Myer’s ACMA, Ray began playing guitar during late 60’s folk scene. With the support and inspiration of fellow local and touring musicians, he began writing and playing in earnest in 2010. Traveling a long road in a short time, his music encompasses many genres, including Americana, Folk, Blues, Ballads, and a little bit of Country. His storyteller style takes the listener to another place in time, his music and lyrics bringing evocative insights into the many sides of life. Ray is also a singer-songwriter’s song-singer. That is, he does interpretive covers of other great originals by very talented artists using his own creative touch. His inventive fingerstyle guitar is uniquely diverse and easy-on-the-ears. In addition to his status as featured artist at local performance venues in SW Florida, Ray also hosted for WGCU, a live radio show for Michael Haymen’s “Morning Zoo” featuring on “The Aficionado Show.” His song ”Fondest Memory of All,” a tribute to Guy Clark, has been celebrated on the Austinbased KEOS radio. He has opened for such extraordinary artists as Roy Schneider, Robin O’Herin, Jaime Michaels, Pierce Pettis, Muriel Anderson and Jefferson Ross. His alter ego is “Rafer John,” lead singer and co-songwriter for Apocalypse Blues Revue. Group members include Brian Carpenter on bass, Tony Rombola and Shannon Larkin of Godsmack, respectively, on guitar and drums. Featuring all original compositions, Apocalypse Blues Revue signed with Mascot/Provogue Records and, after the release of their first CD, toured the Northeast, opening for Steven Tyler, Robbie Krieger of The Doors, Blue Oyster Cult, also touring with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and playing The Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival, as well as various blues venues around Florida and the East coast. ABR's second album release "The Shape of Blues to Come," produced by Dave Fortman of Ugly Kid Joe, was released in July of last year. Ray has now released his own first professional CD. It is a blend of traditional Americana and songs with styles he has developed through the years working with musicians from all genres. The ACMA welcomes Alan Rhody on July 20. He is an American songwriter, singer, guitarist, harmonica player and record producer, with ten solo albums to his credit and over Happenings Magazine

Ray Cerbone 100 covers of his original material. Rhody tours year-round and what he loves best is “connecting with an audience and having a great time.” His latest release, his tenth indie album, “Farther On” has earned critical acclaim from folks like, music journalist and author, Robert K. Oermann - “Music City troubadour Alan Rhody has a new CD titled Farther On. It features his songwriting collaborations with Guy Clark, Murray McLauchlan and Don Henry and a feast of solo works. Not the least of the latter, is his new recording of “I’ll Be True To You,” once a hit by The Oak Ridge Boys. Rhody’s track is stunning and his original, long version reveals just how powerful the song really is. This fellow is one of those rare individuals who can hold you completely spellbound with just his axe and his voice.” A Louisville native, Rhody created the new album, off and on, over a one year period, in his home studio, playing and singing everything, keeping it simple and letting the songs be heard in their unrefined simplicity and directness. His easy-to-listen-to baritone, slowly pulls you in, as you’re given a personal and evocative picture of this well-loved singer-songwriter. Two of his paintings and a recent poem add a nice touch as well. Some of Rhody’s previous releases have included guests: John Prine, the late John Hartford, Sam Bush, Jamie Hartford, David Rawlings and Maura O’Connell. He's also known as the songwriter of "That Ol' Train" (Del McCoury Band), which has been all over bluegrass radio since spring 2018 and the #1 country-folk classic, “I’ll Be True To You” (Oak Ridge Boys); “Wild-Eyed Dream” (Ricky Van Shelton); “Trainwreck Of Emotion” (Lorrie Morgan / Del McCoury); “Christmas To Christmas” ( Toby Keith / Tanya Tucker / Lee Greenwood) and others by Suzie Boggus; Michael Martin Murphey; Atlanta Rhythm

Section; Hoyt Axton; Lynn Anderson and George Jones. Drew Dintzner will open the show on July 20. Other upcoming ACMA shows include a Florida Music Food Initiative Benefit Concert on Aug. 17, Brian Smalley on Aug. 24, The 502s on Sept. 7, Grant Peeples on Sept 14, Cliff Eberhardt on Oct. 5, Friction Farm on Oct. 12, Mike Laureanno on Oct. 19 and Violet Bell & Omar Ruiz-Lopez on Oct. 26. The ACMA provides a venue for local and touring artists, many are award winning performers in the Americana/Folk community. All shows are in a quiet, intimate setting and every show is a meet and greet with the artists. YouTube any of these artists and be prepared to be impressed by the talent that is available to you all year round for a cost of $10 to $15 donation. The headliners are touring “under the wire, should be famous” musicians. Each show has a local songwriter that performs at a professional level open for the headliner. Singer songwriters circles are held every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation at 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. The circle is for acoustic songwriters of all levels. Songs and experiences are shared in a non-judgmental, casual atmosphere. No membership is required. All are welcome to come and play or just to listen. The ACMA is a non-sectarian not for profit organization. Most concerts are held at All Faiths Congregation located at 2756 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. all shows start at 7 p.m. For more information visit www.americanacma.org.

Join us for an extraordinary afternoon. Tickets are $25. The Steepwater Band is scheduled to perform Friday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. in Hinman Auditorium Formed in Chicago back in 1998, The Steepwater Band’s signature sound is a nod to early British blues, combined with a modern, raw and gutsy musical approach. Although the band got their start as devotees of delta blues, they have since been expanding on their influences, absorbing everything from Psychedelia to Americana, from jazz to ‘50s rock n’ roll. They have toured and shared the stage with acts such as Gov't Mule, Buddy Guy, Wilco and many more. Their latest album Shake Your Faith has a wide range of sounds from straight ahead rock n roll to a psychedelic samba, and lyrical direction that extends from love to murder. This album is the true meaning of just that. An album - a collective piece of music that’s meant to be heard front to back. Saylors adds “The way the whole record flows, it’s like one long song… takes you on a little journey.” Tickets for Steepwater Band start at $20. SW Florida Blues Society seeks

talent for annual competition

The Southwest Florida Blues Society presents the Annual Southwest Florida Regional International Blues Challenge (IBC) competition on Sunday, Aug. 25 at DJ’s Rhythm House & Dinner Club in south Fort Myers. Artists who entered the regional competition are hoping this will be their “Road to Memphis” to compete in the International Blues Challenge. The Memphis challenge has grown to showcase more than 260 acts from 40 states and 16 countries covering four continents. Winning the Southwest Florida Blues Society’s regional IBC competition and competing in Memphis has provided artists with some (if not all of the following; • This challenge is for bands who are interested in a higher level of regional, national and International visibility. • This event creates a scenario where the winners will be in a better position to negotiate new gigs and potential touring options. • This opportunity could lead to signing with a major record label or gaining the recognition needed to work with some of the industry’s leading agents, promoters and Happenings Magazine

producers. • There are hundreds, if not thousands of bands, that compete worldwide every year for this opportunity, and you can only get there when you've been selected by an official Blues Foundation affiliate member and the Southwest Florida Blues Society is a Blues Foundation affiliate member. The SWFBS has previously sent acts in all three categories: Band, solo/duo and youth showcase. This is not a jam session. Each act is competing for their chance to go to the IBC in Memphis to showcase their talent by representing the Southwest Florida Blues Society. Acts will be adjudicated by independent judges from different areas of the music and entertainment industry. Each act will be ballot scored according to the Blues Foundation’s established standards covering specifics such as blues content, instrumental talent, vocal talent, stage presence, and originality. The competition will be structured to replicate the Memphis IBC as much as possible with sets ranging from 20-30 minutes and 5-10 minute change outs.

The winning band will receive $1,000 travel assistance to compete in the Memphis IBC. The solo/duo and youth acts will receive $600 in travel assistance. The SWFBS will also present a “People’s Choice Award.” Fans are encouraged to come out and vote for their favorite act. Entry registrations forms are available through the blues society online at www.swfbs.org, and artist registrations will close on Aug.15. Space is limited. SWFBS will guarantee a slot in the competition to the first four bands, first three solo/duo acts, and the first two youth acts. The local competition will be Sunday, August 25. Doors will open at noon, and the music begins at 1 pm. Admission is $12 for general public and $5 for current members of the SW Florida Blues Society (you can join or renew your membership at the door). Raffles and prize drawings will take place throughout the event. The annual IBC event is sponsored by Happenings Magazine and the Southwest Florida Blues Society. Josh Ward, Sebastian Bach

at The Ranch Concert Hall

The music schedule heats up this summer and fall at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers. The Sam Galloway Concert Series presents country artists Josh Ward on Aug. 17, Logan Mize on Aug. 23, the Casey Donahew Band on Oct. 5, Mitchell Tenpenny on Oct. 18 and Randy Houser on Nov. 22. Rocker Sebastian Bach will perform as part of the concert series on Nov. 1. Other shows on tap at The Ranch (not part of the Sam Galloway series) are Nightbird - The Ultimate Tribute Band to Stevie Nicks on Aug. 3, Creed’s Scott Stapp on Sept. 28, Billy Currington on Oct. 19 and Pig Floyd on Dec. 21. “All grit and no quit.” These are the deeply rooted words that Josh Ward lives by to an absolute fault. An anchored mindset that has led this Texas country music rising star from a drifter’s adolescence to the jeopardous game of the rodeo circuit to the punishing toil of the Texas oil fields, and on into the fickle arms of the music business. Some might argue whether it is having nine consecutive #1 hit singles in Texas under his belt that has garnered him staying power, or that he is killing it in the social media world with over 2 million views on YouTube and over 3 million streams globally on Spotify. Maybe it’s his 3 venerated album releases, or maybe because he can not only bat a full house on a 200 plus dates a year touring average, but also rope in crowds on a first time performance in an unfamiliar town. While impressive, all those distinctions can come and go in the world of music. Logan Mize is an accomplished country singer/songwriter from Clearwater, Kansas, who has deep musical roots in his family tree. His great uncle was Billy Mize, largely known for crafting and evolving the legendary Bakersfield sound, which included musical pioneers Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. In 2009, his first self-titled album was released and shortly thereafter, in 2010, Logan signed a publishing deal with Big Yellow Dog Music. In 2012, his second album “Nobody in Nashville” was released, which peaked at #49 on the US Country chart. In 2017, his latest album “Come Back Road” was released and debuted in the top 20 Billboard Country Albums and reached no. 2 on the iTunes Country Charts. Propelled by the album’s popularity, “Ain’t Always Pretty,” eclipsed 30 million streams on Spotify in 2018.

Josh Ward Happenings Magazine

Sebastian Bach Texas music sensation Casey Donahew has painstakingly carved out an impressive niche for himself on the country music scene over the past decade, attracting a solid base of loyal fans who flock to his legendary live shows. Building his career from the ground up one show at a time, he’s managed to perform on countless stages night after night in front of thousands, topped the Texas music charts several times, released four albums independently to critical acclaim, and forged a path all his own through the music scene without the aid or muscle of a major record label or power-suit management company. And the release of his latest CD, “Double Wide Dream,” may just push him to heights he never could have imagined when he first plugged in on stage at the Thirsty Armadillo bar back in Fort Worth’s Stockyards in the fall of 2002, and began constructing his own field of musical dreams. Sebastian Philip Bierk, known professionally as Sebastian Bach, is a Canadian singer-songwriter who achieved mainstream success as front

man of Skid Row from 1987 to 1996. He continues a solo career, acted on Broadway, and has made appearances in film and television. Sebastian Bach’s Nov. 1 stop in Fort Myers is part of his 30th anniversary tour in which he performs the first record “Skid Row” in its entirety. The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. For most concerts, the doors open at 7 p.m. at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon, 2158 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers. July 2019 - 45

Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse

With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.

Hemingway Days July 16 - 21

When Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West during the 1930s, he penned now-classic works that included “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and fished for giant billfish in Florida Keys waters. Fans of adventurous living and writing can celebrate his legacy Tuesday through Sunday, July 16 - 21, with events recalling his literary prowess and vigorous Key West lifestyle. The 39th annual Hemingway Days festivities include a lookalike contest for aspiring “Ernests,” prose and poetry readings, the quirky “Running of the Bulls,” symposium presentations on Hemingway and his influence, a street fair on the island avenues he walked and a three-day marlin tournament that salutes his passion for angling. Approximately 125 burly, bearded men are to compete in the annual Hemingway Look-Alike Contest at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, 201 Duval St., a frequent Key West hangout for the legendary writer. Past contest winners judge the Hemingway hopefuls during preliminary rounds set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 18 and 19, and the finals at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. For more information and registration, visit sloppyjoes.com. The look-alikes also star in activities including Saturday’s “Running of the Bulls” spoof and an event saluting the 120th anniversary of Hemingway’s July 21 birth. 54 - July 2019

The author’s life and legacy will be examined Tuesday, July 16, during a symposium whose topics include newly found Hemingway letters that reveal an unrequited love and the littleknown story that was his first attempt to portray Key West in fiction. Moderated by scholar and Hemingway expert Kirk Curnutt, the symposium begins at 6 p.m. at Key West’s Old City Hall, 510 Greene St. Other literary events include the “Voices, Places, Inspirations” prose and poetry readings, an exhibit of rare Hemingway artifacts at the Custom House Museum and film screenings of “Hemingway: Between Key West and Cuba.” For information, visit kwahs.org. Held in conjunction with the festival is the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition coordinated by Ernest’s granddaughter, author Lorian Hemingway. For information, visit shortstorycompetition.com. The Hemingway Days schedule also features the Stock Island Marina Village Key West Marlin Tournament, the 5k Sunset Run/Walk and Paddleboard Race, a lively daylong street fair on Key West’s Duval Street and Sloppy Joe’s annual Arm Wrestling Championship.
