Theatre in the summer
Southwest Florida theatre does not completely stop in the summer, but it does slow down quite a bit. The few options we have at this time of the year are usually pretty darn good. Grease hits the main stage at Broadway Palm in Fort Myers on July 1 and runs through Aug. 14. Laboratory Theater of Florida wraps up its production of Sunset Schmoulevard July 1 - 3. Later in the month, Lab Theater presents Failure: A Love Story July 29 through Aug. 8. In Bonita, the Centers for the Arts have the Just Desserts Theatre production of Macbeth: The Murder Mystery July 22 - 25 in Moe Auditorium. Cultural Park Theater in Cape Coral is showcasing its young talent with a presentation of Peter Pan Jr. on July 4 and Godspell Jr. on July 18. The Naples Players are staging The Wedding Singer now through July 25. Laughs are continuous with Farce of Nature on stage in the Off Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers now through July 25. In Port Charlotte, young actors will offer us three performances at the end of July showcasing their talents. More season schedules have been announced from a few of our local theatre organizations. Check our magazine’s theatre section for more details. Some very exciting news was announced recently by New Phoenix Theatre. We are happy to share that the Fort Myers theatre will reopen and begin presenting shows again in September. Their new season will include Young Frankenstein, I Hate Hamlet, Quartet, Pageant the musical, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife and Head Over Heels. So glad to see that group emerge from the darkness of the pandemic. Theatre Conspiracy in Fort Myers has announced it will return to indoor shows with a new season starting with The Chechens Aug. 5 - 15.

Celebrate the holiday
After a year of not so many celebrations, it sure feels good to report all the activities taking place in July to observe our nation’s birthday. A year ago, so many of us were hunkered down and sheltered indoors with little social interaction, and no live music, parades, food vendors and fireworks. Well, it’s July 2021, and so much has changed. Restaurants, theatres, music venues and other business are open again. Southwest Florida has a wide variety of activities scheduled with music and fireworks. Red, White and Boom is back in Cape Coral. Naples will have a parade. Star Spangled Bonita has returned. Downtown Fort Myers will celebrate, and Punta Gorda has a few parties planned, too. There will be no shortage of fireworks this year. Colorful displays are scheduled in downtown Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, Cape Coral, Naples (July 3 & 4), Fort Myers Beach, LaBelle and Punta Gorda (July 3 & 4).

As pandemic restrictions ease, The Laboratory Theater of Florida has announced its 13th season. In the Lab Theater tradition of bringing new and thought-provoking theater to our area, the coming season features a world premiere and six southwest Florida premieres, including one that is different every performance by design. In addition to half-price preview nights, the theater will now offer special Thursday night discounts and expanded season pass options. The theater will continue to present its popular 24-Hour Screenwriting Project, staged readings and more.

This year’s 24-Hour Screenwriting Project is set for Oct. 9. All the fun of our 24-Hour Playwriting project - with the added component of video! There will be a limited number of in-person tickets to this event, accompanied by virtual passes. This is a hugely popular event.

Avenue Q with music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx and book by Jeff Whitty, (SWFL premiere) runs Feb. 25 through March 27. It was a winner of the 2004 Tonys for Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical! Featuring puppets and human actors, this is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the story of recent college graduate Princeton as he struggles to find his purpose. Though inspired by Sesame Street, these are Rrated puppets with warnings for adult language and situations. The Naples Players
announces 2021-2022 season
The Naples Players opened their doors again on April 28 with Calendar Girls in Blackburn Hall and An Ideal Husband on May 19 in their Tobye Studio Theatre. From June 23 - July 25, the rest of the 68th season kicks off with The Wedding Singer musical in Blackburn Hall. Based on the book by Chad Beguelin & Tim Herlihy and the hit Adam Sandler movie, The Wedding Singer’s sparkling new score does for the ‘80s what Hairspray did for the ‘60s. Boeing Boeing takes over Blackburn Hall from Sept. 29 – Oct. 24. Written by Marc Camoletti, this 1960s farce features self-styled Parisian lothario Bernard who has Italian, German and American fiancées, each a beautiful airline hostess. All’s well until unexpected schedule changes bring all three to Bernard’s apartment in Paris at the same time. Written by Robert L. Freedman, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder will be in Blackburn Hall from Nov. 24 – Dec. 19. This comedic romp was Nominated for 10 Tony

al and deliciously funny play challenges people of every belief to engage in dialogue – even those who oppose you. Mary Poppins flies before your eyes in this classic musical based on the much-loved children’s books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film of the same name. Mary Poppins will be on the Blackburn Hall stage from March 2 - April 3. Written by Sarah Treem, When We Were Young and Unafraid will be in the Tobye Studio Theatre from March 30 - April 24. This powerful play takes us inside the story of a quiet bed and breakfast turned into a secret women’s shelter in the early 1970s.

New season at Cultural Park Theater; summer THEATRE

The Cultural Park Theatre has announced its 2021-22 season, featuring many of the productions originally planned before the pandemic closed the theater resulting from the Covid pandemic. This fall, Cultural Park will open its 59th Broadway Season with The Best Broadway Musical Revue Ever on stage Sept. 9 through Sept. 19. As in tradiMichael Moran tion, we start our season celebrating the best of Broadway musical theater with a cavalcade of your most popular Broadway songs. The writing team of Jones, Hope and Wooten enjoy the reputation of being three of the most popular and widelyproduced playwrights in the United States. They specialize in writing laugh-out-loud comedies and creating vivid strong roles for women. Because of their popularity with our audiences, CPT is proud to bring two of their shows to our stage this season. Opening Sept. 23 is the comedy Mama Won’t Fly followed by The Savannah Sipping Society from March 24 through April 3. We move into the fall holiday season with an original musical revue The Not So Haunted Halloween Revue From Oct. 21 through Oct. 31. In between the weekend performances (as a treat to the entire family) the theater will host its second annual Haunted Theater Tour for the kids and family. On Nov. 11 we open A Piece of My Heart, the powerful true drama of six women who went to Vietnam: five nurses and a country western singer booked to entertain the troops. We follow each young woman before, during and after their tour. Celebrating the holidays is always special here at Cultural Park, and this season we bring to the stage on Dec. 9 It’s A Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play. cal for 2022 to the stage with Nunsense 2, The Second Coming. Our audiences so fell in love with Nunsense just before we were forced to close and will certainly leave the theater this time with smiles, laughter and wonderful stories to tell about this amazing production. Our second main stage musical this season is The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the story of an eclectic group of six mid-pubescent (played by adults) who vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soulcrushing, pout-inducing, life unaffirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves. At least the losers get a juice box. Finally, we end up our season with You’re Never Too Old, a brilliant comedy by Carl Megill. The laughs surround the story of two fraternal twin brothers when Barney talks retired brother Max into running one of Barney’s video stores in Fort Myers. Running a video store and forced to dress like Donald Duck is more than Max can handle, and it’s up to Max’s wife to bring harmony to the brothers relationship. Our 59th season opens in September, and season tickets go on sale July 1. Meanwhile, don’t miss your chance to see our first family fun show with the classic musical Peter Pan Jr. on stage for one performance July 4 at 3 p.m. Gather the family together and start you holiday out with a bang. That will be followed by Godspell Jr. on stage July 18, then the family summer series wraps up Aug. 1 with Into the Woods Jr. Tickets for all ages are only $10. Big hair and shoulder pads at the ready - It's time to rediscover the ‘80s. Your favorite Adam Sandler movie in musical form is on the stage in Blackburn Hall at The Naples Players now through July 25. The Wedding Singer’s sparkling new score does for the ‘80s what Hairspray did for the ‘60s. Things are going pretty well for wedding singer Robbie Hart (Joseph Byrne) until he’s left at the altar by his fiancé, Linda (Erica Sample). As he struggles to pick up the pieces and continue performing at other people’s weddings, he befriends Julia Sullivan (Alyssa Haney). Julia is preparing for her wedding to long term boyfriend Glen (David Shaffer) - whose commitment to their relationship is questionable, to say the least. Robbie agrees to help Julia plan her wedding when complications arise and the two spend more and more time with each other... With fan-favorite director and choreographer Dawn Lebrecht Fornara and musical director Charles Fornara at the helm of this production, you will certainly be dancing in your seat.

DAAS Co-Op features the art of Ian Summers
In the month of July, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the artwork of award-winning artist Ian Summers. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, July 2 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through July 31. Ian Summers was born in Patterson, N.J. He studied at the University Bridgeport, Conn., where he completed a degree in art education, later becoming an art teacher in Wayne, N.J. His desire to create and expand his artistic career took him to Europe in the mid-1960s. He lived in Paris for a short time, when an unexpected opportunity took him to London, where he taught art the American School. He exhibited in London and conducted speeches at art clubs and centers, like the Unites States Information Center. 16 - JULY 2021
In 1967, Summers moved to New York where his first daughter was born. After the birth of his second daughter, he started working in advertising as a creative director, working with some of the most important authors in the world. Amongst these, Isaac Asimov, whose book cover landed Summers a place in the science fiction community. As a member of the Society of Illustrator of New York, he received an award for best paperback cover, for several years. After years working for Random House publishing, he became a career consultant to people in the creative field, using a problem solving technique he called “Heart-storming.” In 2021, he joined the Union Artist Studios in Fort Myers. In an article published in 2015 in The Elucidator, when explaining his art, Summer says, “I am for an art of memories that are chipped and fragmented, but not nostalgic. Faces conjure forming
associations with people, with persons who may never have lived anywhere, but in my mind. Faces haunt me in my sleep and when I am awake.” Summers’ main subject is faces, which he does not consider portraits, but conjured. He works primarily in acrylics on large scale canvases and other surfaces, such as tar paper and board. Currently, the artist lives in Southwest Florida with his wife, Wendy. The gallery invites art collectors, supporters and enthusiasts to join them for the opening reception on July 2. Battle of the Arts
Bell Tower and Artsemble Underground gallery hold Battle of the Arts each month through 2021. It started in May and takes place the second Saturday of the month from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Visitors can watch local artists create during that time. A panel of judges selects the monthly winner who advances to the grand finale. At right, artist Nick Rapp competes in the June Battle of the Arts. The next event will be held Saturday, July 10 at 5 p.m. at Bell Tower in Fort Myers.
Group exhibit in July at Arts for ACT Gallery In July, Arts for ACT Gallery will feature an open group exhibit with more than 20 artists in “Altars, Shrines, Ditty Boxes and Cabinets of Curiosities 2.” Also showing will be new works from the gallery’s coop artists. An opening reception will be held Friday, July 2 from 6 to 10 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The July exhibit is an open invitational to all artists to produce 2-D or 3-D art for the annual fundraiser to support ACT and ACT Gallery. This year, the gallery asked the artists to create altars, shrines, ditty boxes and cabinets of curiosities of icons, sacred spaces or notable objects. They were to use canvas, shadow boxes, Altoid mint tins,

cigar boxes, upcycled clocks and more. Then fill them with found objects, photos, memories and treasures. Over four years ago, the gallery hosted this exact exhibit and the artists that participated created an array of wonderfully different art. This year, creative genius Dale Weber will be the judge to give ribbons to the best exhibits. Come peruse this year’s exhibit with over twenty local artists and see the creativity that lies in the hearts of all that exhibited. This exhibit continues through Monday, Aug. 2. Love Your Rebellion launches Zine Archive
Browse 100 free digital art and writing books in Love Your Rebellion’s new Zine Archive. The collection, featuring works from around the world, can be viewed at www.loveyourrebellion.org/zine-archive/. Zines, short for DIY magazines, are art and writing books that skip the publisher and go right to distribution. Prior to 2020, Love Your Rebellion (LYR) frequently participated in zine fests around the Southeast that celebrate zines and zine making culture. “Being zine makers ourselves, we really felt the loss of zine fests,” LYR founder Angela Page explains. “We really wanted to create a digital space for zines instead. Plus our brick and mortar facility in Fort Myers had to close for a period, so it was the right time to begin the Zine Archive.” Beginning in July 2020, Page and web developer Shea Elmore went to work contacting zine makers for Creative Commons licensing, scanning physical zine copies that became digital booklets, and developing the webpage. “There are other zine archives out there on the web, but none that look and feel like the LYR Zine Archive,” states Elmore. “It was important that LYR’s archive showcase the

unique shapes, sizes, and contents of each zine. Designing and building something with those qualities meant we had to be very intentional when creating user experience.” LYR launched the Zine Archive in May 2021. Page and Elmore built a responsive online catalog that allows readers to select a title by clicking on it, and then flip through it like it’s the real thing. The ongoing project will feature regular additions to the catalog, as well as updates to the staff picks. The project’s goals are to create a living document of zine making culture, and provide digital access to zines, particularly for people with disabilities that limit mobility. “We see the Zine Archive becoming one of our most eclectic ongoing projects. The Americana Community Music Association, Fort Myer’s home for original Americana music, is resuming live music concerts with a new and expanded schedule. The ACMA provides a venue for local and touring artists, many of whom are award-winning performers in the Americana/Folk Community. Their shows at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation are in a quiet, intimate setting with every show a meet and greet with the artists. At the new Alliance for the Arts venue, the shows are in an outdoor setting adding to the ambience of the music with a meet and greet after the show. For the last year, the ACMA pivoted to live streaming, Zoom and YouTube shows in order to continue the mission of providing quality Americana music to the community during the global pandemic. After a one-year hiatus, the annual Island Hopper Songwriter Fest is returning to Southwest Florida Sept. 17 – 26. Island Hopper Songwriter Fest is a 10-day music festival featuring performances by the greatest singer-songwriters from Nashville and nationwide. Blues and bloodys at The Center Bar
The Center Bar at Promenade at Bonita Bay offers live music six days a week in the summer (Tuesdays - Sunday). On the second Sunday of the month, The Center Bar Concert Series features blues and bloodys. Those Dangerous Divas are scheduled to perform Sunday, July 11 from 4 - 6:30 p.m. at The Center Bar Concert Series. Additional shows have been announced as Seminole Casino Hotel in Immokalee restarts its concert schedule. Last month, the casino announced Blue Oyster Cult on Feb. 12, The Golden Boys (Bobby Rydell, Fabian and Frankie Avalon) on March 4 and Kenny G on April 3. New shows include Here Come the Mummies on Oct. 22, Clint Black on Oct. 30, Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone on Dec. 12, The Texas Tenors on Feb. 25 and The Guess Who on March 19.
