Theatre choices available

Despie the end of tourist season, we still have some theatre options to consider this month. Laboratory Theater of Florida presents An Empty Plate in the Cafe du Grand Boeuf June 3 through July 2 in Fort Myers. In Cape Coral, Where There’s A Will is on stage June 24 - 26 at Cultural Park Theater. The hilarious Menopause the Musical has returned to the Broadway Palm in Fort Myers. That show plays now through July 2. In the Off Broadway Palm Theatre, Neil Simon’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers will be performed June 16 through July 30. The Naples Players are making us laugh with Stage 2 Improv now through June 18 at the Sugden Theatre. Catch Me If You Can will open July 1 and run all moth long.

Looking ahead

In last month’s magazine, we started to unveil the new theatre season schedules for Artis–Naples and TheatreZone. In this month’s magazine, we have more 2016-17 theatre seasons for you to consider. They include the Off Broadway Palm Theatre, Florida Repertory Theatre, the Naples Players and Laboratory Theater of Florida. Of course in the July magazine, we will publish more 2016-17 schedules from some of our other theatre partners.

A fond farewell

The Naples Players are saying goodbye to a long-time talent at the Sugden Community Theatre. Dallas Dunnagan recently announced her resignation as artistic director after 16 years with the local theatre group. We thank Dallas for her tremendous contribution to the local theatre community and we wish her well in her next production in life.

New venue

At the end of the month, we will welcome a new performing arts venue to Southwest Florida. After more than three years in the making, Brien Spina will be opening the new Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center June 25 at the corner of Bonita Beach Road and Imperial Parkway in Bonita Springs. The new facility will have a 500 person capacity and will serve as an events and performing arts center with programming throughout the year. The dinner theatre schedule will include traveling shows. The facility will also include teatro restaurant featuring chef Michael Psilakis. Spina says his Off the Hook Comedy Club will remain in Naples and not be part of the new Bonita venue. We congratulate Brien Spina on his newest business venture and we look forward to the artistic talent he will showcase there.

Still plenty of concerts

Southwest Florida and the Sun Coast will welcome numerous national performers in the coming months. Some of the national concerts include Weird Al Yankovic, Kirk Franklin, The Tubes, John Waite, Eric Paslay, Jason Bonham, Cyndi Lauper, Tracy Lawrence, Chris Cornell, Firefall, Poco, Butch Trucks, Ted Nugent, Leon Russell, The Go-Gos, Ray LaMontagne, Alice Cooper, Seal, Mark Chesnutt, Steven Tyler, Brian Wilson, John Michael Montgomery, Chick Corea, Celtic Thunder, Bonnie Raitt, ZZ Top, Jason Isbell, Les Stroud, Kansas and more. For those of you who want some great national acts and want to see them on the water, music cruises are always a fun option. Examples include Country Cruising Jan. 14 - 19 (from Tampa), Monsters of Rock Cruise Feb. 2 - 7 (from Tampa), the Flower Power Cruise Feb. 27 - March 4 (from Fort Lauderdale) and the Rock and Romance Cruise March 11 - 16 (from Fort Lauderdale).

Laboratory Theater to stage ‘Empty Plate’

Laboratory Theater of Florida will present An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf by Michael Hollinger June 3 through July 2 at its Fort Myers theatre. No menu necessary at the world's greatest restaurant, the Café du Grand Boeuf in Paris. Why? "Because we have everything," head waiter Claude admonishes waiter-intraining Antoine. On this hot July night in 1961, the two join waitress Mimi and chef Gaston in awaiting the imminent arrival of Victor, the café's owner and sole patron. But when "Monsieur" returns from the bullfights in Madrid, disheveled and morose, his wish is simple: to die of starvation at his own table. The frantic staff, whose very lives depend on Victor's appetite, try all means to change his mind: How will they save the day? “An Empty Plate is a delightful fast-paced comedy, and also a story of deep longing,” said Artistic Director Annette Trossbach. Audience mouths will water at the wait staff's service of an extravagant multi-course dinner, plated and kept in the kitchen and richly described to the subtlest ingredient. Words, language, and Hemingway are tonight's specials! This comic tragedy in seven courses is directed by Barry

Next up in June, Staten Island playwright Joe Simonelli's original play, Where There's A Will, will run for four performances one June 24, 25 and 26. published plays and some regional pro theatre under his belt, but still striving to get his big Broadway hit. Gordon however tends to gamble too much and has trouble moving on from past relationships which seriously threatens his current relationship with his muse Cassandra played by (Brandy Razavi). To add to the pressure, his overbearing manager Al, (Bob Fliss) is after him to finish the play he is struggling with because they have already received a nice advance and the publisher’s deadline is looming. Just when all seems lost who shows up to save the day but the “Bard” (Tyler Omundsen) himself, offering advice and commenting on modern accoutrements of the day. Menopause the Musical at Broadway Palm

Broadway Palm is thrilled to present for the second time “The Hilarious Celebration of Women and The Change,” Menopause the Musical playing now through July 2. This international phenomenon has been seen by more than eleven million people in eleven countries since it debuted in a 76-seat perfume-shop-turned-theatre in Orlando, Florida in 2001. Four women at a Bloomingdale's lingerie sale have nothing in common except a black lace bra … and memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, not enough sex, too much sex, chocolate binges, day-to-day challenges with aging parents, aging children and aging partners. They share their ups and downs through a collection of 26 re-lyricized baby boomer songs from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The Disco hit “Stayin' Alive” becomes “Stayin' Awake,” Motown favorite “My Girl” is transformed into “My Thighs” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” switches to “In the Guest Room or on the Sofa, My Husband Sleeps At Night.” Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, writer and producer Jeanie Linders created the show as a celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived “The Change.” From its first performance, the show has evolved as a “grassroots” movement of women who deal with life after 40 and all the challenges that result in the mental, physical and spiritual freedom of the baby boomer generation. Ticket prices range from $39 to $62 with discounts for children and groups of 20 or more. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling (239) 2784422, by visiting www.BroadwayPalm.com or by stopping by the box office at 1380 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

His coarse honesty and overbearing personality are the antithesis of Anna's artist boyfriend and everyone else in her life.... and yet the attraction is magnetic. This romance between the seemingly mismatched Anna and Pale exemplifies the strength, humor, and complexity of all of Lanford Wilson's work.

You end up with a side-splitting comedy full of mishaps, mistakes, and mayhem! Naples Players announce schedule for next season at the Sugden Theatre

The Naples Players have assembled a compelling combination of plays and musicals for the upcoming year, all of which reflect a satisfying mix of music, mayhem, and laughter for their eight play season at Sugden Community Theatre. Rocky Horror Show with book, music and lyrics by Richard O’Brien kicks off the fall on the Blackburn Hall stage Oct. 12 – Nov. 6. This rocking musical is a humorous tribute to the cheesy science fiction and horror B movie genre. The story follows the innocent and newly-engaged Brad and Janet as they get caught in a storm and find themselves at the mansion of Dr. Frank N Furter who is anything but innocent. Come on, “Let’s Do The Time Warp Again!” Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley comes to the Tobye Studio Oct. 26 – Nov. 20. Anthony and Rosemary are neighbors in rural Ireland. He is an introverted farmer and she is the woman who vows to have him at all costs. When Anthony’s father threatens to disinherit his son, Rosemary steps into the middle of a land feud and family eccentricities beyond what one might imagine. Full of dark humor and poetic prose, John Patrick Shanley’s tenderhearted portrait reminds us that love, early or late, always arrives on time. Coney Island Christmas by Donald Margulies takes the Blackburn stage Nov. 23 – Dec. 18. From Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies comes this funny and heartwarming holiday play about Shirley Abramowitz, a young Jewish girl during the Depression, who is cast as Jesus in her school’s Christmas pageant, much to her immigrant parents’ chagrin. As Shirley, now much older, recounts the memorable story to her great-granddaughter the audience is captured by the merriment, nostalgia and music of the era. Coney Island Christmas captures what it means to be an American during the holidays. Bell, Book, and Candle by John Van Druten follows in Blackburn Hall Jan. 11 – Feb. 5. Gillian Holroyd is a witch. When she casts a love spell on her handsome mortal neighbor things start getting tricky, as witches who fall in love lose their supernatural powers. Further complicating matters is her meddling aunt, a mischief making brother, and an author-turnedwitch hunter who’s out to expose the magical goings on in 1950s high society Manhattan. The dark comedy Dead Accounts by Theresa Rebeck, will fill the Tobye with laughter Feb. 1 – 26. After spending several years in New York, Jack unexpectedly returns to Cincinnati and his family needs to know why. Is he in some sort of trouble? Where’s that wife everyone hates? And how did he get all that money? Theresa Rebeck’s comedy tack-

les the timely issues of corporate greed, small town values, and whether or not your family will always welcome you back… with no questions asked. Timeless favorite My Fair Lady with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and Music by Frederick Loewe, comes to life on the Blackburn stage March 1 – April 2. This classic musical is the Cinderella story of Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl who grows into a refined lady with the help of the haughty speech therapist, Henry Higgins. As Eliza blooms, so does their romance, but coming from two different worlds proves to be challenging. My Fair Lady boasts a memorable score with songs like “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” and “On the Street Where You Live.” These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich takes the Tobye stage March 2 – April 15. Set in the 1920’s, Catherine and her friends develop serious medical conditions due to the glowing paint they use to make clocks dials. When the company they work for refuses to acknowledge the issue the women choose to stand up and fight for justice. These Shining Lives chronicles the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day, exploring their true story and its continued resonance. Ending the Blackburn season is the comedy I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick, which will run April 19 – May 14. Television actor, Andrew Rally has moved to New York and has been offered to play Hamlet. The only problem? He hates Hamlet. Weird Al tour to stop in Fort Myers June 5

Following his wildly successful 2015 tour, four-time Grammy-winning artist Weird Al Yankovic has announced the continuation of his Mandatory World Tour in 2016 including a stop in Fort Myers. Yankovic will play Sunday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW. The 2015 tour took Weird Al and his long-time band to more than 100 cities in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. This year’s tour (beginning June 3) will see Yankovic bringing his high-energy comedy rock show to an additional 79 cities across North America. According to Al: “I’ve decided to do the Mandatory World Tour for one more year, after learning that some people didn’t make it out to the show this last time around. Apparently, they don’t know the meaning of the word ‘mandatory’!!” The tour follows Yankovic’s Grammywinning Mandatory Fun, which was the first comedy album in over fifty years to hit #1 on the Billboard charts and the first comedy album in history to debut at the top spot. Weird Al Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist in history, earning four Grammys and 15 career nominations. He is best known for his hilariously irreverent parodies of hit songs by the biggest stars in the musical universe over the past three decades, including “Eat It,” “Like A Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy,” and “Tacky." In 2015, Yankovic released his 14th studio album, the Grammy Award-winning Best Comedy Album Mandatory Fun making history as the first comedy album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart and the first time a comedy album has reached the top of the chart in

Notes exhibit opens June 3 at Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center

This year’s juried exhibition at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center involves Notes: Musical, Monetary and Handwritten. An award reception will be held during the June 3 Art Walk in downtown Fort Myers. Artists submitted two- and threedimensional works related to this year’s theme and were announced by jury selection of acceptance into the exhibit. Of the pieces chosen, three prizes will be awarded. Prizes include: Best of Show, cash prize in the amount of $500; SBDAC Pick, cash prize in the amount of $250; People’s Choice, cash prize in the amount of $250. ACT Gallery welcomes Diana Ripoli, Dharma LeFevre & Alex Wilkinson

Arts for ACT Gallery, located at 2265 First St. in downtown Fort Myers, will host an opening reception on Friday, June 3 in conjunction with the monthly Art Walk. In June, featured artists include Diana Ripoll, showing in the main gallery; Dharma LeFevre in the white gallery; and Alex Wilkinson off the main gallery. This exhibit continues through June 27. Diana Ripoll was born with a natural fascination for brilliant color and abstract ideas. She has had the good fortune of traveling the world and her mind has become a vast well of snapshots and experiences that her subconscious draws upon to create her paintings. Diana chooses the color that attracts her at the moment, and then continues to add colors and watch how they flow, mix and move. The paintings begin to form themselves, she then finds what is hidden, and begins to consciously bring it out. Only when the work is completed does she find the true meaning of the piece and what inspired it. With each completed piece, Diana looks forward to revisiting the story it represents. Dharma LeFevre is a fine art figurative artist that calls Fort Myers home. Raised in Naples, she attended college in Oklahoma at Neo A&M Junior College for graphic arts. There she found that she disliked the graphic arts and decided to go on a different career path. Dharma took a 20-year creative hiatus and instead focused on a family and job. Five years ago, she decided to create again and taught herself how to paint in various mediums from acrylic to coffee and teas. Her artistic background is based in fantasy, mythology and figurative works. Her current body of work has inspirations that pull from feminine Art Nouveau, urban lines and techniques and vintage influences in saturated colorful pieces.

Alex Wilkinson

Alex Wilkinson is a self-taught mixed media artist. She has worked as a needle arts designer and instructor for 20 years using pieces of fabric as her canvas. Today, Alex employs traditional pen and ink, acrylic paint, colored pencils, oil pastels, markers, paper and found objects to create her mixed media art work on canvas or Bristol board. Her favorite subjects are animals, feathered friends, Art Deco, and Celtic lore. Her often whimsical fold art designs include small stitch-like black and white line patterns in the Zen Tangle inspired art style. Zen Tangle (doodling) has been around since ancient times. It was visible on the walls of Egyptian Pyramids, in Celtic Manuscripts and in basic borders and shapes worldwide. Come view the Zen of Alex Wilkinson.

Frame Gallery & Gifts showcases art of Hilary Hemingway in June

Frame Gallery & Gifts in Cape Coral will feature the artwork of Hilary Hemingway in June. Hilary Hemingway was born in Miami. She spent her first two years living aboard a boat, and took her first steps in Jamaica. Eventually, her parents bought a home on Miami Beach. Hilary spent most of her summers in the Bahamas helping her father with his Bimini newspaper. Hilary has worked the last 30 years as a writer for print media, TV and film. She has five published books, two plays and her latest screenplay, Hemingway and Fuentes, co-written with Andy Garcia, is in pre-production. Recently Hilary returned to her love of fine art; using the bold color palette of the Caribbean, she has begun to produce mixed-media works of marine life and colorful island settings. Hilary believes that her artwork tells a story. A moment caught on canvas may tell of a struggle of life and death between marlin and tuna, the expression of speed, passion and fear within the chase, the ultimate survival at sea. Yet her color choices are surreal, as if the struggle were seen with mermaid eyes. Hilary’s canvas art has sold in galleries and at auction for charity. She is Ernest Hemingway’s niece, and wife of NY Times bestselling author, Jeff Lindsay. Located at 1830 Del Prado Blvd., Frame Gallery & Gifts is open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call the gallery at 239-574-5111 for more details.

Quest for Permanance exhibit at FGCU

The Art Galleries of the Bower School of Music & the Arts at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) present Quest for Permanence at the Main Gallery in the Arts Complex. The May 19 opening began with an introduction by the artists followed by a performance from Ghostbird Theatre and a reception. This exhibition is a collaboration between the art and theatre faculty and the Galleries, and is co-curated by gallery director John Loscuito, and FGCU professors Barry Cavin (theatre) and Michael Salmond (art). The exhibition runs through June 23. Quest for Permanence features local, national and international artists Kent Anderson Butler, Benjamin Grosser, Chad Jensen, Leila Mesdaghi, Ghostbird Theatre and Cyane Tornatzky. The exhibition includes prints, video installation, projection, sculpture, interface design and a zoetrope. Co-curator Cavin said, “Quest for Permanence is a human project in time and place. We leave traces to give us the illusion of permanence. We are brave in this adventure because we battle time itself or we collude with time all the while planning our greatest deception. We assure ourselves that it is for others that we leave our traces. Our generosity will enlighten or entertain. The truth is, of course, we want to live forever. Quest for Permanence is an exhibit of work that examines humans at play with time in its many forms and the tensions that arise as time and place collide.” The gallery is in the Arts Complex on FGCU’s main campus at 10501 FGCU Blvd. S. Parking is available in Lot 7 for gallery visitors. Regular viewing hours are

Harbour View Gallery features Barbara Broderick, Bonnie Wallace Harbour View Gallery in Cape Coral will welcome featured artists Bonnie Wallace (acrylic and watercolor) and Barbara Broderick (glass art) at a reception on Tuesday, June 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. Bonnie M. Wallace, now residing in Cape Coral, was born in western Pennsylvania and raised in Northeast Ohio. Bonnie started her artistic journey as a photographer. In 2005, she decided to expand her artistic palette and be-gan to paint. Starting with watercolor, she was led to mixed media, the style in which she continues to work. Bonnie studied with many nationally known artists including Tony Couch, Jean Grastorf and Janet Rogers. Bonnie’s work has been presented in juried group exhibits at the Appleton Museum, Ocala Civic Theatre, Brick City for the Arts (award winning piece) Homosassa State Park (award winning piece) and Wallace Cape Coral Art League (award winning piece). She has done two- and three-woman shows and was accepted twice into the Florida Watercolor Society online show. Barbara Broderick has always loved the beauty of glass, the way light can transform it to radiant and glow. Any art gallery that displayed glass, she kept her family waiting while she studied and admired each piece. So naturally, when an opportunity came up to learn stained glass, she grabbed it. After the first class, she came home and told her husband, "I now know what I'm supposed to do." It came natural and brought her pure joy. Today, now 16 years later, her artwork is owned all over the world. Born and raised on the southwest side of Chicago, she raised her family in the area's south suburb of Tinley Park. Her stained glass has been sold in countless shows and galleries in the Chicago area. Over the years, her artwork emerged into her own style of a 3-D stained glass and art accent tables. "I love the idea of functional art. My tables are meant to be treasured as art that can be handed down as heirloom pieces in the home." Now a resident of Cape Coral, this is the first time Barbara is bringing her art to Florida. The stained glass literally pops out at you creating a truly beautiful, unique effect not seen elsewhere. Each piece is an original that will never be replicated. With the use of her kiln, her artwork is exceptionally thought out and detailed. Their work will be on display through June. The gallery is located at 5789 Cape Harbour Drive, Cape Coral. It is open 11 Broderick a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
