Show time

The summer theatre season has started in Southwest Florida. Although many of our theatres have gone dark for a few months, there are still great options for going to see live theatre. Broadway Palm in Fort Myers is paying tribute to Johnny Cash with Ring of Fire. This main stage musical production plays now through June 23. This show will be followed up by the hit musical Annie, playing June 28 through Aug. 11. In Naples, Chicago the musical will be on stage at the Sugden Community Theatre. This Naples Players production will play June 28 through July 29. The Savannah Sipping Society will keep us laughing June 14 through July 22 at the Off Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers. On June 2, Cultural Park Theater in Cape Coral will celebrate local theatre with its annual Marquee Awards. The Laboratory Theater of Florida kicks off its summer season with Hush Up Sweet Charlotte on stage June 1 through July 1. To the north, Venice Theatre is hosting a community theatre festival June 18 - 23. Sanctioned by the American Association of Community Theatre, the festival features shows, workshops and troupes from 15 different countries. Of course, our friends at Seminole Gulf Railway run their Murder Mystery Dinner Train all year long with suspenseful performances. Well, some more theatre groups have announced their new season schedules. So far, we’ve told you about the next season for TheatreZone, Gulfshore Playhouse, Laboratory Theater of Florida and Gulfshore Opera. In this month’s magazine, we are sharing the 2018-19 season lineups for the Naples Players, Broadway Palm and Florida Repertory Theatre. We will continue to share more schedules in the coming months including that of a brand new Fort Myers group called New Phoenix Theatre which plans to open this fall on McGregor Boulevard. 4 - June 2018

Songwriter festivals

My wife and business partner (Kathy) and I spent a few days in Key West in May to take in some of the 23rd annual Key West Songwriters Festival. Thanks to our friends at Key West Express, the trip there and back was convenient and enjoyable....as always. It was wonderful to see some of our favorite songwriters, but also great to meet some new ones. The festival runs five days, but we were only able to catch two of those days. But in that short time we were able to see nearly two dozen performances by the people who have hits on the radio or will soon when that right song comes along. The immense talent of these people is just amazing. On top of that, they are friendly and humble. They are also quick to say hello, shake your hand and snap a photo with you. For those of you who don’t know, we have our own such festival here in SW Florida. It’s called the Island Hopper Songwriter Festival, and it takes place Sept. 21 - 30 this year. It is sort of modeled after the Key West version. Island Hopper starts in Captiva, then moves to downtown Fort Myers and ends on Fort Myers Beach. It features more than 80 songwriters in about 150 performances. Be sure to mark it on your calendar.

Music cruises

As many of you may know, we also support live music on the high seas and partner with the organizers of the ‘70s Rock and Romance Cruise each year. StarVista Live, the folks who put that cruise on, also produce other music (or themed) cruises like Malt Shop Memories, Southern Rock, Country Music, Soul Train, Flower Power and the newest one, Ultimate Disco. Each of these cruises has your favorite recording artists on board performing and interacting with you and your fellow cruisers. See page 44 of the magazine to find out which cruise is best suited for you. Use promo code Happenings and you can save hundreds of dollars on your cabin. Rock on,

The vaporous and shifting nature of memory and the power it holds in relationships is illuminated as Walter Prime begins to assimilate the stories of Marjorie’s memories as his own.

Rey Lorenzo, Joe LeMay at Arts for ACT Gallery

Arts for ACT Gallery will feature artist Rey Lorenzo in the main gallery showing mermaids and other original works and artist Joe LeMay in the white gallery in June.

Joe LeMay

For over 35 years, Rey Lorenzo worked professionally as an artist. He works on residential and commercial art projects pertaining to original art and murals. Painting in acrylic paints with vibrant colors, and textured surfaces, Rey has a line of artistically hand-painted furniture and an acrylic painted and polymeric clay textured canvas line. He loves the ability to create new and creative artwork that helps enhance the environments fir his clients. Rey Lozano art is comprised of a vibrancy of colors and textures along with the use of a multitude of jewels, rhinestones, clay, glass and tile pieces to create and to help add dimension to his canvases. Born and raised in the Midwest, Joe LeMay made the move down to Southwest Florida in 1998. In 2004, he went to study art in Savannah, Ga., where he graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a degree in illustration. After getting his B.F.A., he returned to Fort Myers and began working in freelance illustration. His freelance work has included children’s book illustration, logo design, poster design and comic strip illustration. Soon after arriving back in Southwest Florida, he began working at a gallery in downtown Fort Myers. Being involved hands-on in the gallery scene inspired him to move in a different direction, and he began creating artwork targeted at galleries and exhibitions rather than web pages and magazines. Joe is currently living and working out of Cape Coral. ACT Gallery, located at 2265 First St. in downtown Fort Myers, will hold an opening reception on Friday, June 1, from 6 to 10 p.m. during Art Walk. ACT Gallery is also featuring new works by more than 25 co-op artists.

DAAS features Xavier Brignoni, Sarah Brown

In June, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts will become an experience, well beyond a simple exhibition. The Balancing Act, consisting of a large collection of conceptual art pieces, constructed within the realms of mixed mediums and forgotten techniques such as “decoupage,” will become the center focus of the main gallery space. The brainchild of the 2017 FACE award winner Xavier Brignoni, it was all inspired in recent personal experiences in the artist’s life. The opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, June 9, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Sarah Brown, who was recently named Best Florida Protest Art by one of the top local newspapers, has designed yet another impacting protest art piece for the Window Room of the gallery. Known for her Collateral Damage conceptual pieces, Brown touches the hearts of those who witness the names of each of the hundreds of people killed in recent mass shootings. This too, will be an unforgettable experience and coinciding with the opening of June 9. “I like to take my experiences in conceptual art and turn those life experiences in a conversation piece,” says Brignoni, whose love for the medium became almost an obsession, once he started the first piece of this collection. 18 - June 2018

Xavier Brignoni

“I practiced traditional decoupage which is the art of cutting multiple levels of the same images and positioning them on top of each other, separated by a rubbery substance, to achieve a tridimensional effect – since I was very young and rediscovering now has been my greatest artistic revival.,” adds Brignoni. The focal points for the majority of Brignoni’s pieces are black and white images of hearts, brains, birds, bodies, and much more. There are also drips of paint in red and black, all suggesting tears and time spent during a healing process known only to those who experience situations similar to the artist’s. These are all elements that represent different aspects of human behavior, actions and reactions. The collection is displayed in a thought provoking way, intending to deliver an experience to the viewer, who will inevitable relate by the imagery. For more information about the gallery, visit www.daascoop.com or call 239-5908645. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery is located in the Royal Palm Square at 1400 Colonial Blvd., suite 84, in Fort Myers. Regular offseason business hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting this month. Happenings Magazine

For photographers from other states, Camera USA provides an opportunity to demonstrate success, exhibit in Southwest Florida and compete for the $5,000

National Photography Award. The competition is open to photographs taken in the United States after Jan. 1, 2014. by photographers residing in the U.S. A preview reception and award ceremony will be held Friday, June 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There is a $10 suggested donation when attending the reception (free for NAA contributors). Augmented Reality exhibit at Alliance for the Arts The Alliance for the Arts’ one-of-a-kind June exhibition, Augmented Reality, will be on display from June 1 through June 23 with an opening reception on June 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 10091 McGregor Blvd. This exhibition brings computergenerated objects into the real world. Augmented reality, or AR, superimposes computer-generated images over a user’s view of the real-world, thus enhancing one’s current perception of reality. The gallery walls will be blank, leaving the exhibition only to be viewed through a free Alliance app through the App Store. Gallery-goers will use a phone or tablet to produce augmented reality through a series of marker-based targets which will bring to life megalithic creatures, board games, asteroids and more. Featuring a total of 12 digital works, Augmented Reality is a virtually interactive, digital

exhibition designed and curated by August Taylor. Taylor is a sophomore student majoring in computer science with a focus in cyber security at Florida Polytechnic University. He currently has over 20 industry certifications, most of which were achieved while at Dunbar High School’s Microsoft Academy. “From improving education to bringing art to life, augmented reality will no doubt be part of our future,” says artist and curator August Taylor. “My hope is that this exhibition will display some of the possible augmented reality implementations that we may see in our day to day lives in a future that is not so far off.” Meet and engage with August during a conversational tour through the gallery on June 9 at 6 p.m. For more information, call 239-939-2787 or visit www.ArtInLee.org. The alluring eyes of Veronica Sanchez

Naples resident Veronica Sanchez may be somewhat new to the local art scene, but she has an amazing way to capture her art admirers’ attention with the dramatic eyes in many of her pieces. The artist immerses herself in the world of art through painting and reaches the maximum simplifi-

cation of forms, colors and graphics within the minimalist current. Veronica is a multidisciplinary artist concerned about the fragility of memory. She translates thought into images that give life and reduce forgetfulness, she says. She says she is influenced by surrealism, symbolism and modern illustration. Happenings Magazine discovered her art last year when she exhibited in the Naples Art Association’s monthly Art in the Park. Veronica said she hopes to be part of Art in the Park again this fall. For more about her art, call Veronica Sanchez at 239-450-0785 or 450-1020 or email the artist at artveronica719@gmail.com.

Frame Gallery & Gifts serving the local art scene for 28 years

Frame Gallery and Gifts has been in Cape Coral doing business for 28 years and has a second location, Lorne’s Gallery at Tarpon Point Marina. When a visitor walks into the gallery, you can see an abundance of interesting pictures and art nicely displayed. As you saunter around the gallery, you discover that it’s very eclectic. There are so many different items ... little doodads that by themselves are different and combined with thousands of other pieces you have something that is really extraordinary. It is very evident that the owners of this business Lorne and Barb Hosack love what they do. It shows. “We’re different than most galleries. We publish 10,000 pieces of art. We are entirely in house with our own printing department featuring Jim Pottle with over 30 years experience in the business,” says Barb Hosack. “So we paint, scan, print, frame and dis22 - June 2018

tribute our art. Yes, we buy art, too. Because art is like popcorn ... you can always have more, Hosack adds. Plus, they do photo restoration. “We can take Uncle Joe out of the picture or put him in,” she said. “We wholesale art around the world. This is especially true of our nautical charts. They are fantastic. Almost anything on our website can be put on our charts.” Frame Gallery and Gifts can create charts that are art and suitable to hang in any home. They can work with charts from anywhere ... Seattle, Jamaica, Caribbean, but above all this area. Passion, competence, expertise, follow through and they will be as picky as you are for you’re precious heirloom to be framed. Co-operative Art Gallery at Coconut Point showcases Southwest Florida creativity Currently open five days a week (Wednesday through Sunday), the Co-operative Art Gallery at Coconut Point Mall in Estero is a large, open venue for the exhibit and sale of work by hundreds of local artists. The gallery is operated by the Art Council of Southwest Florida, an association of 21 visual arts organizations in five counties of this region. The art council is dedicated to fostering the education and appreciation of the visual arts, and the artists and craftspeople participating in the gallery must be members of at least one of the art council’s affiliate members. These affiliates receive a percentage of all sales at the gallery, thereby supporting the council’s goals. An entirely volunteer cooperative, each artist showing their work in the gallery serves one day a month to greet visitors, answer questions and handle sales, giving them additional experience in art curating and marketing. The gallery also features a monthly discussion by Wanda Kemper, concerning the principles of art, and a critique of work brought to the discussion.

Happenings Magazine

All are invited to her next presentation on Friday, June 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. Whether a visitor or longterm resident, anyone interested in exploring this area’s offerings in art exhibits, classes and education are encouraged to visit the art council’s website (www.acswf.org) for a list of the organizations belonging to the association, with links to many of their websites and the programs they offer.

Summer hours at the Art Gallery (next to Panera in Coconut Point Mall in Estero) are Wednesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The gallery is closed Mondays and Tuesdays during the summer.

ACMA to celebrate sixth

anniversary with showcase

The Americana Community Music Association will celebrate its sixth anniversary in June with a special showcase at the end of the month. Meanwhile, the month gets started with the Nouveau Honkies returning to the ACMA listening room in Fort Myers on Saturday, June 2. In mid 2014, Rebecca Dawkins and Tim O’Donnell of The Nouveaux Honkies, hoisted anchor and set sail in their rebuilt RV. The journey started in South Florida and took them as far west as the Rockies, as far north as the Great Lakes, as far east as Cape Cod, and returned south for the winter. It’s been somewhere around 150 thousand miles, 600 shows, and at least one million smiles that has influenced The Nouveaux Honkies and their Loud In Here CD release in March of 2018. O’Donnell says, “We based out of Tennessee the last two summers and fell in love with the Smokies. Knoxville will be a wonderful spring through fall hub for traveling and we also love this little city.” Their 2015 release, “Blues For Country,” masterfully blended styles. Their new release, “Loud In Here,” is a continuance of that same concept, respecting the greats and creating their own gumbo, which reveals a highway of influences. Opening for The Nouveaux Honkies are ACMA members Sylvia and Pete Popravak who have been playing music together for the past 12 years, originally as members of Skeeterland Band and Banyan Bluegrass, then gradually developing into a guitar and mandolin duo that incorporates a variety of musical genres, including folk, country, Cuban/Latin, and, yes, bluegrass. Always experimenting, adapting and progressing from their roots in rock and traditional Cuban music, Silvia and Pete have created a style that is uniquely theirs, while remaining faithful to the many sources of their music. The Rightly So will be in concert on Friday, June 8. Born in the heart of the Buffalo rust belt, The Rightly So brings a vibrant energy to Americana music. The young acoustic duo is comprised of esteemed guitarist and performer Gregory Zeis, and award-winning singer/songwriter Jess Chizuk. Both have achieved a great deal of musical success on their own, and have formally combined their talents to create an unstoppable force of captivating original music. The Dr. and Dave open the June 8 show. The Dr. and Dave began singing together and found their voices worked together to form unusual harmonies that seemed to twine and blossom as they continued to hone their musical union. Dave began playing guitar and writing songs during his junior year of high school in Waukegan, IL, and by the 1980s, he had developed a portfolio of some of the best songs no one had ever heard. Some did find their way to the stage with several bands that played at bowling alleys and Chinese restaurants. Val began singing at 11 in New York City and was privileged to spend three summers at the Manhattan School of Music where she was trained classically. She performed in concerts with several choirs in her teens and performed in community theater as well. When she arrived in Florida in 1995, she began singing with the SW Florida Symphony Chorus, and Dave, who came to Florida in 2000, joined her in this endeavor in 2009. They soon began to meld their passion for music, marrying in 2010. Now they collaborate on songs Dave has written, creating new versions, as well as new songs, that combine their musical passion and skills. Happenings Magazine

The ACMA welcomes Passerine on Saturday, June 23. Passerine’s distinctive sound combines vocal harmonies, the crisp rhythms of an acoustic guitar, the haunting voices of the fiddle and dobro (resonator slide guitar), the resonant lows of an acoustic bass. With inventive vocal harmonies and song-writing, supported by the sounds of acoustic strings, Passerine offers a fresh take on traditional folk and bluegrass music as well as a repertoire of original songs that range from sweet ballads to the edgier side of contemporary Americana. Opening for Passerine, Ken Hulme is a founding member of EverythingDulcimer.com, the oldest Internet dulcimer forum, a frequent contributor to the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer forum, and has been involved in dulcimer clubs in several states. He is recognized as a major proponent of the traditional Noter & Drone style of playing. Ken can be heard at open mics around town, offering his brand of Americana roots music to the guitardominated local music scene. Ken specializes in music so old there are no ASCAP or other performance issues -- the folk music of Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales. The big ACMA 6th Anniversary Show is scheduled for Saturday, June 30. Passing the five-year mark and into their sixth year, the ACMA can safely say they are here to stay. Keeping true to their mission of supporting original independent music, it has been easy because it’s “all about the music.” The Fort Myers area is now known as a strong songwriting community. Over the years, the ACMA has become instrumental in prompting and encouraging original music. The ACMA Sunday songwriters circle is the perfect place for songwriters to present new songs, gain experience, and be mentored. Every show at the ACMA showcase local songwriters. If you enjoy the annual Island Hopper Songwriter Fest in the fall, you will love hearing local songwriters share their songs and the story’s behind the songs, in a quiet Listen Room. The ACMA will present a special night of music emceed by Dan Philgreen. The musician lineup is all founding songwriter members that joined the first year: Joe Virga, Ray Cerbone, Carlene Thissen, Roy Schneider, Bill Metts, Scott Dozier, Dan Philgreen, Mike McMillan, Kim Mayfield, Houseboat Jim, Alan Branford, Ken Crosby and Ricky Baker. Many others wanted to attend but will be out of town. Join the ACMA as they celebrate the only way they know how, by making music. The weekly singer songwriters circle is held every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation at 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. The circle is for acoustic songwriters of all levels. Songs and experiences are shared in a non-judgmental, casual atmosphere. No membership required. All are welcome to come and play or just to listen. The Americana Community Music Association provides a venue for local and touring artists, many are award winning performers in the Americana/folk community. All shows are in a quiet, intimate setting and every show is a meet and greet with the artists. YouTube any of these artists and be prepared to be impressed by the talent that is available to you all year round for a cost of $10 to $15 donation. SAM GALLOWAY CONCERT SERIES

Cale Dodds, Joe Nichols, Jon Langston at The Ranch

The Sam Galloway Concert Series in conjunction with Gator Country 101.9 is bringing more national artists to The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers this summer. The Ranch welcomes Cale Dodds in concert on June 15. Cale Dodds is a gifted solo artist with a band-brain. He masterfully plays off the musicians who surround him and creates a salon-style performance space where the audience is a welcome extension of the band. That collaborative style carries over to his songwriting: Dodds has a tremendous ability for turning a phrase and exploring nuances that are easily overlooked. Touted by Rolling Stone for his “smooth pop-country crooning over arena ready arrangements distinguished by clever lyricism,” the Columbus, Georgia, native mines his own experiences in songs. The clever lyricist will take his latest single “Take You Back” to country radio this spring and has already garnered early praise as a CMT #18 for 2018 Listen Up artist and a Google Play Country Artist to Watch. Meanwhile, his tune “Out of My System” scored a slot on Amazon Music Unlimited’s Best Country Songs of 2017 list. One of Rolling Stone’s New Country Artists You Need to Know, Dodds has already garnered more than 15 million streams on Spotify alone. Joe Nichols will perform June 23 at The Ranch. As Joe Nichols began work on a brand new batch of old-school country music, he found himself looking back for inspiration. Back to his early career, back to true friends and the simple perfection of pure country music … back to things that never get old. “Full circle is the term I would use,” the Arkansas native says about his new project, fittingly titled Never Gets Old. “The whole theme of the record is ‘Let’s get back to where it all began for me. Let’s get back to where my passion for music began.’” From 2002’s Man With a Memory on, Nichols harnessed that passion as a steady hit maker, racking up six Number Ones and eight Top 10s, including chart-topping modern classics like “Brokenheartsville” and “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.” He’s a four-time Grammy nominee, an ACM, Billboard, CMA, and CMT Award winner, and his last album offering, Crickets, kept the success going, sending both “Yeah” and “Sunny and 75” to Platinum-certified Number One status. But then four years went by – the longest span between releases of his career – as Nichols dug in to reconnect with his calling. In Never Gets Old, he’s done just that. Tickets for Joe Nichols start at $30. Happenings Magazine

Georgia native Jon Langston has always had a love for music of all kinds, but has not always pursued a career in the music industry. Even though he had a band in 8th grade with a few hometown buddies, it was nothing more than just a fun hobby for Langston at the time. Instead, Langston set his sights on playing football in high school and earned a Division I scholarship to play at GardnerWebb University in North Carolina in 2009. It was his junior year of college when he picked the guitar up again. “I suffered multiple concussions, and so the coaches, doctors and myself decided the best for my health was to hang up the pads,” Langston says. “It was hard but I knew it was the right thing to do. I didn’t know what God had planned for my life at the time.” Langston began to learn how to play the guitar again and began to write his own songs and post-

ing them on YouTube. “It is crazy how God closes one door and opens another. I had no idea what was ahead of me with the whole music world.” His current single “Prob’ly At A Bar” is out now. Advance tickets for Jon Langston’s show on June 30 start at $18. Other upcoming shows at The Ranch include Cody Johnson on Aug. 18 and The LACS on Nov. 3. The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community, says Brian Tidwell, general sales manager of Sam Galloway Ford. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community, Tidwell said. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. For most concerts, the doors open at 7 p.m. at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon, 2158 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

Reimagined exhibit tells story of lost World War II B26 Marauder

The IMAG History & Science Center has enhanced its B26 Marauder exhibit which displays remnants of a crash that occurred off the coast of Sanibel in November 1942. The refreshed exhibit opened May 12 with a series of graphically designed panels that detail the incredible story of the WW II bomber and its crew who perished in the crash. Parts of the plane were donated to the Southwest Florida Museum of History (which has since merged with the Imaginarium Science Center to create the IMAG) by Underwater Historical Explorations (UHE) in 2008. IMAG executive director Matt Johnson said, “We decided it was the perfect time to bring the story behind this exhibit to the forefront, as it is the ten-year anniversary of a longstanding mystery solved by the UHE team.” In 2008 Tim Wicburg, the Fort Myers fishing boat captain who discovered the plane 17 years prior, partnered with UHE, made up of former Chicago resident, Tom O’Brien and hall

of fame diver, captain Jon Hazelbaker. They led an extensive excavation of the crash site in May of that year. Subsequently, they donated the pieces that now make up the exhibit on display at the IMAG. After realizing they had found a military plane that had been missing for 66 years, they conducted lengthy research about the origins of the plane, and its crew. Little did they know they would uncover the cause of the crash and clear the name of the

pilot, having the official record changed from “pilot error” to “mechanical error.” Visitors to the IMAG will have the opportunity to learn about this extraordinary discovery and the lives of the crew members. Some family members of the crew were in Fort Myers to mark the tenyear anniversary of UHE’s discovery and visited the crash site May 12. A brief memorial service was conducted with prayers, remembrances and the placing of flowers on the water. UHE divers will transport items from the families to the gulf floor that afternoon. Johnson joined the crew for the dive and said, “There is nothing like witnessing the site of such a historical occurrence up close and experience what has been left behind.” The family members and UHE team gathered at the IMAG the next day to see the exhibit and hear a presentation. IMAG History and Science Center is a family-friendly destination offering fun interactive exhibits, an aquarium, history displays and a 3D theatre located at 2000 Cranford Ave. in downtown Fort Myers.

IMAG, FGCU partner for Seminole patchwork exhibit

The IMAG History & Science Center recently opened an exhibit, created in partnership with FGCU’s Museum Exhibit Design Class, examining the rich cultural significance the craft of patchwork holds for the Seminole Indians. More than 20 unique Seminole dolls and clothing items are on loan from The Florida Museum of Natural History. Through information text panels, hand-on activities, and the objects on loan, visitors will learn about the significance of each patchwork and the amount of time involved in creating them. The exhibit opened May 4 and will close on Oct. 28. Sewing a Native Truth: Seminole Fashion and Culture is the inaugural exhibit in a new collaboration between the IMAG and FGCU. Each spring, FGCU students will design, curate, and install a new exhibition for the IMAG. This semester, the students studied Seminole Indian culture through patchwork. “It is a practical learning opportunity for the students, to be able to research the history and culture of the area they live in and to present that research to the community. We are looking forward to the public opening and to the potential of future exhibits,” said IMAG executive director Matt Johnson. For more information, call 239-243-0043, visit www.theIMAG.org or in person at 2000 Cranford Ave. in downtown Fort Myers. 48 - June 2018

She has performed across Southwest Florida this year, including the Strawberry Festival, Art Walks the Runway, and Point Ybel Brewery. Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse

With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.

KEY WEST

Mystery Fest June 22 - 24

Key Lime Festival

June 30 through July 4 Almost every traveler to the Florida Keys samples Key lime pie, the island chain’s signature dessert. Visitors can immerse themselves in all things Key lime, including a wacky pie-eating contest and gravity-defying “pie drop,” June 30 through July 4 in the town where the pie was born in the late 1800s. The Key Lime Festival salutes the creamy pie and the tiny yellow fruit that inspired it. Made of condensed milk, egg yolks and Key lime juice, the pie filling is typically nestled in a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream or meringue. The festival begins Saturday, June 30, with a free 11 a.m. kick-off party at the Key West Lighthouse, 938 Whitehead St. Highlights include a contest where entrants attempt to drop actual Key lime pies from atop the lighthouse — without damaging the pies. Saturday also features the Key Lime Cocktail Sip & Stroll, whose participants can sample Key lime martinis, margaritas and other limey libations at local watering holes. Events Sunday, July 1, include a festive waterfront brunch and the annual Key Lime Pie Hop. The latter takes foodies on a stroll to sample five variations of the 54 - June 2018

famed dessert — including an Oreo-crusted version at the pie’s presumed birthplace, the Curry Mansion at 511 Caroline St. Lime lovers can sample Key lime rum Monday while touring the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, 105 Simonton St., and discover island city landmarks on the Key Lime Scavenger Hunt. Other fun includes champagne cookbook signings at the Curry Mansion, where attendees can acquire signed copies of “The Key West Key Lime Pie Cookbook” and meet author and pie expert David Sloan. The festival’s final event, and undoubtedly its messiest, is the Mile-High Key Lime Pie Eatin’ Contest set for Wednesday, July 4, at a location to be announced. Entrants must attempt to devour an entire 9-inch pie, topped with mountains of whipped cream, without using their hands — while trying to outpace their rivals and beat the pie-eating record of 51.92 seconds. Doors open at 10 a.m. and the contest begins at 11 a.m. For more event information, pricing and registration, visit www.keylimefestival.com For Key West visitor information, visit online at www.fla-keys.com/keywest or call 1-800-LAST-KEY.

No sleuthing skills are needed to understand why missing Mystery Fest Key West, set for Friday through Sunday, June 22-24, would be downright criminal. Readers and writers seeking clues about crafting and enjoying mystery fiction can meet, interact with and learn from some of America’s most notable authors during the fifth annual Mystery Fest Key West. Among the starring “suspects” are keynote speaker Ace Atkins, a prolific crime novelist chosen by the Robert B. Parker estate to continue Parker’s iconic “Spenser” series; editor, publisher and Mysterious Bookshop proprietor Otto Penzler, a world-renowned authority on mystery fiction; and famed multigenre author Heather Graham, who has penned more than 100 volumes including the acclaimed “Krewe of Hunters” novels. Other presenters include forensic scientist and top-selling author Lisa Black; Diane A.S. Stuckart, who created the Leonardo da Vinci historical mysteries; cozy mystery writer Nancy J. Cohen; and Charles Todd, co-author of the awardwinning Inspector Ian Rutledge series. Law enforcement experts are to offer insights as well. The festival’s dastardly doings are headquartered at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Hotel Grand Key, 3990 S. Roosevelt Blvd. Attractions include writing workshops, panel discussions, book signings, receptions and gatherings where mystery buffs can mingle with the genre’s leading lights. Workshop and panel topics include the forensic use of fingerprints, writing historical mysteries, book promotion and the state of the publishing industry. Attendees can detect upcoming festival happenings at a poolside welcome reception featuring Heather Graham, and discover Key West’s history and hotspots during a Conch Tour Train excursion. In addition, they can “interrogate” speakers Ace Atkins and Otto Penzler at an ice cream social at the Key West Lighthouse, 938 Whitehead St. Other highlights include the Saturday presentation of the Whodunit Mystery Writing Award. The suspenseful events conclude June 24 with a waterfront brunch at the Schooner Wharf Bar, 202 William St., sponsored by Mystery Writers of America’s Florida chapter. Cost of the festival is $195 per person and special hotel rates are available for registrants. For more info and registration, visit mysteryfestkeywest.com Happenings Magazine
