The Legend of Georgia McBride opens June 7 at Laboratory Theater of Florida. That will run on select dates through June 30. Theatre Conspiracy has rescheduled Rancho Mirage to June 14 - 23 at the Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers. In the Off Broadway Palm Theatre, Sex Please, We’re 60 opens on June 6 and plays through July 21 in Fort Myers. The Naples Players present Mamma Mia! June 26 - July 28.

Arts & cultural destination

The United Arst Council of Collier County reports the development of an arts and culture strategic plan is moving forward. With public and private funding, the county has awarded a contract to The Cultural Planning Group to do the job. “The goal of the planning effort is to establish and successfully promote Collier County as an arts and culture destination,” said Jack Wert, executive director of the Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Convention and Visitors Bureau. “A well-constructed plan will identify what assets and activities are currently in place and what is needed for expansion and development of our arts and culture offerings.” The UAC said, “The planning efforts will begin with the development of the project work plan and evaluation of existing community conditions and arts and cultural assets, followed by development of a strategic framework, identification of future public and private fund-

ing sources, and finalization of a longterm strategic plan. Development of the strategic plan will include gathering input from community arts and culture organizations, tourism industry stakeholders and residents through a series of meetings to be scheduled throughout the county. The process is expected to take approximately 10 months to complete and progress reports will be shared during the plan development stages.” This is great news for Collier County and the entire Southwest Florida arts community.

THEATRE

LABORATORY THEATER OF FLORIDA

The Legend of

Georgia McBride

Keeping with the tradition of bringing fresh and edgy theater in Southwest Florida, The Laboratory Theater of Florida announces the Southwest Florida premiere of Matthew Lopez’s The Legend of Georgia McBride. If you loved Whatever Happened to Baby Jane: A Parody of the Horror and Hush Up Sweet Charlotte you aren’t going to want to miss The Legend of Georgia McBride. In this area premiere, a young Elvis impersonator, barely eking out a living, finds out his wife is pregnant. To make matters even more challenging, he gets fired from the run-down Florida bar where he’s been working. But, in true storybook fashion, one night, he is transformed by some unlikely new friends and then rehired as a lip-synching drag queen. The cast includes Steven Michael Kennedy as Casey, Imani Lee Williams as Jo, 6 - June 2019

Clayton W. Brown as Miss Tracy Mills, TJ Albertson as Rexy/Jason and Keith Gahagan as Eddie. The Legend of Georgia McBride is a showstopping, hilariously outrageous comedy about discovering your true voice, replete with music and sparkly costumes galore. Director Brett Marston says, “When young Casey loses his job as an Elvis impersonator, life hands him a rare and unique performance opportunity when a drunken drag queen collapses before her show. Forced with the reality that the show must go on, Casey is quickly coached by seasoned drag performer Miss Tracy Mills to zip it and tuck it … ‘you are woman now...PUT ON THAT DRESS!’ What ensues is an exotic, erotic, chaotic, hypnotic, and melodic drag spectacular filled with tons of glitz and glamour. The Legend of Georgia McBride is a delightful and dazzling show filled with humor,

warmth and love. It's a story about how we discover who we truly are and the struggles that often occur as we navigate that journey.” Lab artistic director Annette Trossbach says, “It's a showstopper with heart, sass and sequins. Delightful, modern characters in a fairytale situation plus all the glamour, cattiness, and deep friendship of showbiz.” Laboratory Theater has new seating. Rows A, B, and C are on the floor. Rows D and above are on risers. The Legend of Georgia McBride runs June 7 - 30 at the Laboratory Theater of Florida. THEATRE This TheatreZone original production celebrates the season with a concert-style performance of holiday favorites, lively dance routines, scrumptious costumes and a live orchestra to put everyone in a festive mood.

Set in the summer of 1935, this Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of sisters Ruth and Eileen, one an aspiring writer and the other a dancer, who move from rural Ohio to seek success in Greenwich Village, New York. Together, the sisters take on the Big Apple, pursuing their dreams and finding love. The score, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Comden & Green, features “Ohio,” “Conga,” and “One Hundred Easy Ways.”

TheatreZone in Naples reveals its 15th season

TheatreZone, a professional Equity theatre in Naples that specializes in Broadway musicals, has announced its 2019-2020 season shows. They include Home for the Holidays (Dec. 13 - 15); Wonderful Town (Jan. 9 - 19); Tonya & Nancy: The Rock Opera (Feb. 6 - 16); Gypsy (March 5 - 15); and I Love My Wife (April 16 - 26). “We like to present a blend of a traditional show, a favorite from the past seasons, and a show or two that people may not have seen before,” says Mark Danni, artistic director. “This gives our subscribers and ticket buyers variety and exposure to new things. We believe it is our job to introduce lesser known works to new audiences.” Danni continued, “The idea for Wonderful Town came from a conversation we had with Leonard Bernstein’s daughter, Jamie Bernstein. She said ‘Wonderful Town is my favorite of my dad’s musicals, and I think it would be wonderful on your stage.’ ” Bringing a different musical genre to the stage, Tonya & Nancy: The Rock Opera is based on a story audiences know but in a format that may be new to them. This show is brand new and has only been presented in Boston, New York and Chicago. The producer flew to Naples to specifically meet with TheatreZone because they wanted to have the show staged in Florida and immediately thought of Mark Danni and TheatreZone. With so many well known songs, Gypsy appeals to everyone. “This is a classic and timeless Broadway musical where audiences leave happy and singing,” Danni says. “We expect that these tickets will sell

10 - June 2019

Regarded by many theater professionals as the greatest musical ever created, Gypsy is the ultimate tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughtersʼ success …while secretly yearning for her own. Set all across America in the 1920s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurentsʼ landmark show explores the world of two-bit show business with brass, humor, heart, and sophistication.

Premiering in 2011 at Oberon in Cambridge, MA, this is a comedic original musical done with a great deal of heart. This work of fiction, inspired by actual events, utilizes the 1994 Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan media scandal to explore Americaʼs obsession with celebrity scandals and its “go for the gold at all cost” attitude. With libretto and concept by Elizabeth Searle and music by Michael Teoli, audiences can expect hilarity, poignant moments, a radical score and non-stop energy in this unique experience.

quickly.” Music directing the production will be Karen (Moor) Yelaney, who was the original Baby June with Ethel Merman on Broadway. Her talented daughter, Megan Yelaney, who was last seen in TheatreZone’s Baby, will play Gypsy Rose Lee. Mark Danni and Karen Yelaney had worked together in New York before Mark moved to Naples. “We are also thrilled to announce that TheatreZone fan favorite Becca McCoy, last seen as Princess Puffer in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, will portray the iconic roll of Mama Rose,” Danni said. Well received when TheatreZone staged this in Season 5, I Love My Wife is a hilarious 1970s look at relationships and sexuality. “The topic sounds racy, but the show is not,” Danni says. “It’s more about the comedy and how the couples get to bed than what happens when they get there. I also love that the band are characters in the show and have 9 costume changes!” The show has wonderful music written by the legendary Tony Award winning composer Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity, City of Angels). In a change for its 15th season, all evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Matinees at 2 p.m. will continue to be offered on Saturdays and Sundays. Additionally, TheatreZone will present international concert acts and other events throughout the new season. TheatreZone is in residence at the 250-seat G&L Theatre on the Community School of Naples campus, 13275 Livingston Road, Naples. Tickets range from $50-$75 and are on sale now. For more information, visit www.theatre.zone or call 888-966-3352 x1. A hysterical satire of the sexual revolution of the 1970s, this musical takes place on Christmas Eve in suburban Trenton, New Jersey, where two married couples who have been close friends since high school find themselves contemplating a ménage-à-quatre. Cirque du Soleil: Corteo coming to Hertz Arena

14 - June 2019

Corteo, the latest and most enchanting Cirque du Soleil’s arena production is now touring in North America. The show will visit Estero at the Hertz Arena from July 17 to 21 for a limited run of seven performances. This unique production, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, first premiered in Montreal under the Big Top in April 2005. Since then, the show has been a great success and has amazed 8 million people in 19 countries on four continents. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly

caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality. The concept and disposition of the stage bring the audience in a theatrical atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo. The cast of Corteo includes 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from all around the world. Tickets for Corteo are available now online. ART

Fantastical Works by Martha Dodd at DAAS Co-Op Gallery DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is featuring the work of current member Martha Dodd in June. The exhibition, entitled “La Soirée Fairy,” features a series of realistic pieces created by the artist. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 7 from 6 to 10 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through June 29. June is a magical time, marking the beginning of summer - when the nights are still cool and bright enough, to step out and enjoy a fantastical evening. There will be fairies present, and guests are encouraged to attend in fairy costumes as well. Anyone with a set of wings, whether they be fairy, butterfly or feathered, will be awarded with a free gift. A framed fairy print by the featured artist will be awarded to the wearer of the best costume. Dodd is a realist whose genres include fantasy, equestrian and wildlife art, murals, and portraiture. Her technique is straightforward. She strives to reveal what is most beautiful about her subject. Equally important to her is conveying to the viewer a sense of “being there.” In keeping with the June theme of fairies, Dodd has rendered stunning portraits of fairies for this exhibit. The artist acknowledged that it is not an easy undertaking to paint an insightful painting of a fantasy creature, such as a fairy. But Dodd pulls off the feat with equanimity. Her characters convey a believability and sincerity that draws the viewer in. Dodd was destined to be an artist. Her father was a physician, her mother an artist, and thanks to mom, she grew up in Ohio sur-

rounded by an impressive art library that included large volumes of works by Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo. She was swept away by the enormous murals these masters created. So inspired, she loved to draw and took every art class that was available to her during the school year, and even some summer courses at the College of Wooster, Ohio. But the artist loved horses even more than she loved art, and instead of pursuing a degree and career in art, she attended the Agricultural Technical Institute majoring in Horse Management for a year before transferring to Ohio State University, where she earned her BS in Animal Science in 1983. She originally intended to become a veterinarian, but instead became a physical therapist for race horses, working for the Bill Haughton Stable in New York, New Jersey, Kentucky and Florida for five years. While working at the track, Martha found time to draw the horses around her from life, and it was not long before co- workers and horse owners were commissioning her to do portraits of their horses. She had the benefit of visiting the art museums in New York City, and meeting fine equine artist William Orr, who shared with her some tips on painting. She decided to pursue another career and a found a job working for an art studio in Florida, where she began painting full time,

going out on her own five years later. Dodd has found inspiration all around her in Florida, and discovered that she could not only paint horses, but birds, fish and humans as well. To her delight, she discovered a huge demand for murals, and that has been the mainstay of her work for many years. DAAS Co-Op is located at 1815 Fowler St., Unit 3, in Fort Myers. New business hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on the first Sunday of every month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information can be found at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-5908645.

New exhibits at Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center

Sarah Sullivan

18 - June 2019

The Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center will open two new exhibits in June. The 2019 June juried exhibition merges technology and art. AC vs. DC: Tesla vs. Edison asks artists to use these two figures to create original works inspired by their era, discoveries, interests, characters, legacies, and of course, their rivalry. Spark an interest in the onlooker with pieces that offer a unique perspective on these powerful and innovative figures, and the way their ideas and personas drastically changed the world. Recall the age of invention in the turn-of-the-century style exhibition. The exhibit opens Friday, June 7 at 6 p.m. as part of Fort Myers Art Walk. It closes June 28. Also opening on June 7 is an exhibit called Sarah

Sullivan: Full Spectrum: Inner Worlds. Some disabilities are invisible. Have you ever wanted to get an inside glimpse? Think of it as a secret world, and this is your invitation to take a visit, to step inside. Keep in mind that what you see, hear, or feel is just one person’s experience with the subject matter presented. When you exit this alternate reality, remember this – things aren’t always what they appear to be on the surface. Think of Sarah as your interpreter or translator, from neurotypical to her own personal language and back again. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District. A $1 entry donation is suggested. Call the center at 239-333-1933 or visit www.sbdac.com for more information. Happenings Magazine

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Through Aug. 10 Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre 1380 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers The classic “tale as old as time” tells of Belle, a young woman in a small town, and a Beast, who is really a young prince under a spell. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. Time is running out and if the Beast doesn’t learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed forever. The spirited, headstrong Belle enters the Beast’s castle after he imprisons her father and with the help of his enchanted servants, Belle begins to draw the cold-hearted Beast out of his isolation. 239-278-4422 Mural dedication Harbor Walk near Events Center, downtown Punta Gorda 5 p.m. Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society event, 941-979-2786 Elvis & More tribute Cape Cabaret, 4725 Vincennes Blvd., Cape Coral, 7 p.m., 239-549-3000 Wendy Renee The Center Bar, The Promenade at Bonita Bay, 26811 S. A summer of great music at The Ranch Concert Hall

The music continues all summer long at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers. In June, The Ranch welcomes rockers Dokken and Lita Ford on June 14, UK Grammy Award winning reggae band Steel Pulse on June 19, Citizen Cope on June 27 and In the Light of Led Zeppelin on June 29. The Sam Galloway Concert Series in conjunction with Gator Country 101.9 presents Josh Ward on Aug. 17, Logan Mize on Aug. 23 and the Casey Donahew Band on Oct. 5. “All grit and no quit.” These are the deeply rooted words that Josh Ward lives by to an absolute fault. An anchored mindset that has led this Texas country music rising star from a drifter’s adolescence to the jeopardous game of the rodeo circuit to the punishing toil of the Texas oil fields, and on into the fickle arms of the music business. Some might argue whether it is having nine consecutive #1 hit singles in Texas under his belt that has garnered him staying power, or that he is killing it in the social media world with over 2 million views on YouTube and over 3 million streams globally on Spotify. Maybe it’s his 3 venerated album releases, or maybe because he can not only bat a full house on a 200 plus dates a year touring average, but also rope in crowds on a first time performance in an unfamiliar town. While impressive, all those distinctions can come and go in the world of music. The reason for his staying power turns out to be quite a simple one. And that is because Josh Ward is country music blood to bone, and both Josh Ward and country music are simply not going to go away. Logan Mize is an accomplished country

Logan Mize

Happenings Magazine

Josh Ward singer/songwriter from Clearwater, Kansas, who has deep musical roots in his family tree. His great uncle was Billy Mize, largely known for crafting and evolving the legendary Bakersfield sound, which included musical pioneers Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. In 2009, his first self-titled album was released and shortly thereafter, in 2010, Logan signed a publishing deal with Big Yellow Dog Music. In 2012, his second album “Nobody in Nashville” was released, which peaked at #49 on the US Country chart. Over the next five years Logan hit the road and toured the US and UK, attracting and winning over new fans at every stop along the way. In 2016, Mize made waves and solidified his unique relationship with his fans by letting them take over the reins and booked a solo acoustic tour driven exclusively via social media. Mize and crew decided to replace the tour bus with his 1989 Chevy Caprice station wagon named “Glenn” and traveled 20,000 miles in 2-months to play shows in clubs, hometown bars, and backyards. In 2017, his latest album “Come Back Road” was released and debuted in the top 20 Billboard Country Albums and reached no. 2 on the iTunes Country Charts. Propelled by the album’s popularity, “Ain’t Always Pretty,” eclipsed 30 million streams on Spotify in 2018. If you build it, they will come. This might be the mantra of one of the greatest baseball movies of all time, Field Of Dreams, but it’s also a pretty accurate description of the career of Texas music sensation Casey Donahew. The Burleson native, (with the help of his wife Melinda,) has

painstakingly carved out an impressive niche for himself on the country music scene over the past decade, attracting a solid base of loyal fans who flock to his legendary live shows. Building his career from the ground up one show at a time, he’s managed to perform on countless stages night after night in front of thousands, topped the Texas music charts several times, released four albums independently to critical acclaim, and forged a path all his own through the music scene without the aid or muscle of a major record label or powersuit management company. And the release of his latest CD, “Double Wide Dream,” may just push him to heights he never could have imagined when he first plugged in on stage at the Thirsty Armadillo bar back in Fort Worth’s Stockyards in the Fall of 2002, and began constructing his own field of musical dreams. The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. This fall, The Ranch welcomes Billy Currington on Oct. 19. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. For most concerts, the doors open at 7 p.m. at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon, 2158 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse

With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.

KEY WEST

Second half of 2019 has plenty of

celebratory events in Key West

The second six months of each year in the Florida Keys & Key West are always festive, with lively and offbeat events throughout the 125-mile-long island chain. There are always only-in-the Keys activities for visitors eager to enjoy marine life and the unique environment, fresh dock-to-dish seafood and luscious cuisine and the engagingly laid-back atmosphere of the Keys. Here are highlights of some major events from July through December including the 40th anniversary of the zany and colorful 10day Fantasy Fest in late October. A more detailed schedule of Keys events can be found at www.fla-keys.com/calendar. The Key Lime Festival (July 4-7), now in its seventh year in Key West, salutes the tiny, tangy fruit that inspired Key lime pie, the Florida Keys’ signature dessert. The festival schedule includes a Key lime pie eating contest, Key Lime Cocktail Sip & Stroll, a Key Lime Pie Hop tasting tour and a gravity defying “pie drop” from atop the Key West Lighthouse. Key West Mermaid Festival (July 5-7), the first of its kind in the Keys, is to showcase awareness of oceans and salty shores. Events include mermaid meet-ups, sunset celebrations, mojitos with mermaids and a Salty Street Fair. The 35th Annual Underwater Music Festival (July 13), a nationally acclaimed submerged songfest in the Lower Keys, is held at Looe Key Reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to promote reef preservation. Divers and snorkelers can explore part of the continental United States’ only living coral

barrier reef while rocking to a unique sub-sea concert. Hemingway Days (July 16-21) held in Key West, celebrates the life and work of legendary author Ernest Hemingway, who lived and wrote on the island during the 1930s. Highlights include the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest for stocky bearded men, prose and poetry readings, the wacky “Running of the Bulls,” presentations on the writer’s influence and a three-day marlin tournament recalling his passion for deep-sea angling. Key West BrewFest (Aug. 29 to Sept 2) is a Labor Day weekend event now in its 10th thirst-quenching year. It’s highlighted by an Aug. 31 signature tasting event with nearly 200 beers and microbrews on tap. The festivities benefit the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club of the Conch Republic. Womenfest (Sept. 4-8) brings thousands of women from across the globe to Key West for one of North America’s largest gatherings of lesbians and their friends. Events created by the Key West Business Guild typically include active adventures, flag football, pool parties and live performances. Bahama Village Goombay Festival (Oct. 18-19), a lively family-friendly event in Key West’s historic Bahama Village neighborhood, celebrates island-style food, arts and crafts, live entertainment and dancing in the streets. It’s held noon to midnight both days on the first weekend of Fantasy Fest. Fantasy Fest (Oct. 18-27) marks four decades of masquerade madness with a 10day extravaganza themed “In Tune but Off Key: Celebrating 40 Years of Fantasy!” The

outrageous costuming and masking festival is recognized around the world. Highlights include a costume competition for pets, a headdress ball, themed parties, street fairs, a madcap march and a lavish parade with dazzling large-scale floats, walking groups and island-style bands. The Key West World Championship Race (Nov. 3-10), sometimes called the Indianapolis 500 of powerboat racing, features high-speed offshore powerboats and adrenaline-fueled action. Part of the course runs through Key West Harbor, offering smooth water where racers can achieve speeds above 140 mph and provide fans breathtaking displays of skill and power. The Stone Crab Claw Eating Contest (Nov. 9), presented by Keys Fisheries in Marathon, celebrates the much-anticipated opening of Florida’s stone crab season that takes place Oct. 15 each year. In the wacky contest, participants age 18 and older vie to crack and cleanly consume 25 stone crab claws in the shortest time. The Key West Film Festival (Nov. 20-24) themed “passion meets paradise,” typically features screenings and special events at landmark venues throughout Key West. The fest showcases films that illustrate creativity, diversity, sustainability and beauty — elements capturing the heart of Key West, the United States’ southernmost island city. The Big Pine & The Lower Keys Island Art Festival (Nov. 30) features locally produced arts and crafts, live music and food. Attendees can show their holiday spirit and choose unique artisanal gifts for friends and family at the annual open-air fair, traditionally held in Big Pine on the grounds of the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce. Key West Holiday Fest (Dec. 1-31) spotlights a wide range of seasonal celebrations including the illumination of the Harbor Walk of Lights, a hometown holiday parade, tours of decorated historic inns, a lighted boat parade and lively New Year’s Eve celebrations. The I Love Stock Island Festival (Dec.1315), on the Lower Keys island renowned for its rustic and authentic working waterfront, is a family-friendly blend of music, food, history and art studio tours, watersports and freshoff-the-boat seafood celebrations. New Year's Eve “Drops” in Key West Ring in 2020 with a “conch shell drop” at Sloppy Joe's Bar; the descent of a super-sized red high-heel shoe carrying drag queen Sushi at the Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House complex; the lowering of a pirate wench from atop a tall ship’s mast at the Schooner Wharf Bar; and a huge replica Key lime wedge splashing down into a larger-than-life margarita glass at Ocean Key Resort & Spa. among her more than 200 novels and novellas. Other “culprits” slated to offer insights are New York Times bestselling authors Lisa Black, Carla Norton and Diane A.S. Stuckart; noir writer Mike Dennis, festival founder and author/publisher Shirrel Rhoades, forensic botanist Jane Bock and literary agent Bob DiForio. The sleuthfest starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 28 with a reception hosted by superstar author Graham and Key West Mayor Teri Johnston at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front St. Attending “suspects” can learn about successful mystery writing at Saturday’s panels and presentations. Topics include forensics for writers, plotting a mystery, the state of the publishing industry, how featured authors got their start and the reasons they write specific types of mysteries. Deaver’s keynote speech

is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The day’s attractions also include the presentation of the Whodunit Mystery Writing Award. The winner receives a book-publishing contract with Absolutely Amazing eBooks among other prizes. Only clueless attendees will miss the evening’s highlight: a 6:30 p.m. rum sampling at the Hemingway Rum Co. Distillery at 201 Simonton St. The distillery honors literary giant Ernest Hemingway, who lived and wrote in Key West during the 1930s. Events conclude Sunday with a waterfront brunch for mystery buffs at the Schooner Wharf Bar, 202 William St. Cost of the festival is $195 per person. Those who register by June 1 are eligible to win a cameo “character placement” role in an upcoming book by presenting author Gray Basnight.
