Summer theatre

Hard to believe summer is already knocking on the door. This year is passing by too quickly. Fortunately, 2021 is improving with each passing day (in comparison to 2020). More venues are opening up and shuttered theatre groups are announcing plans to return to indoor, full season schedules in the fall. Here’s what we have on our local stages at present: Beehive; The 60s Musical opens May 27 and runs through June 26 at Broadway Palm. In Cape Coral, Cultural Park Theater will hold its second annual fundraising gala. Heart for the Arts, is June 19. As for the summer, the theater is being turned over to the youth performers with productions by summer campers. The Naples Players are keeping busy with their productions following two sold-out shows. Next up will be The Wedding Singer on stage June 23 through July 25. In Port Charlotte, the Charlotte Players are staging Men Are Dogs June 11 - 20 at Langdon Playhouse. The Off Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers is making us all laugh again with Farce of Nature which plays June 3 through July 25. The Laboratory Theater of Florida presents the world premiere of Sunset Schmoulevard, a snarky take on the film noir classic. This Lab Theater original will be performed June 11 through July 3 at the Fort Myers theatre. In Naples, The Studio Players are staging One Slight Hitch May 28 through June 13 at the Golden Gate Community Center. Looking ahead, some more groups have announced their seasons. (We already told you about TheatreZone, Gulfshore Playhouse, Broadway Palm and B.B. Mann Hall.) Florida Rep plans to return to indoor productions in late September with a tribute to Nat King Cole. The Naples Players announced their fall schedule will kick off with Boeing Boeing in late September.

Fourth of July

As COVID cases decrease and more people get vaccinated, the world is safely reopening a little bit more each day. And the very good news is that special events are returning. Our next big national holiday will be celebrated with fanfare and fireworks. That’s right, the Fourth of July will be observed in a big way this year. Cape Coral is bringing back its Red, White and Boom with a concert and fireworks. Naples will have a parade and fireworks. Fort Myers will be doing live music and fireworks downtown. Collier County is holding a big outdoor concert at its Paradise Coast Sports Park on July 3. The Shell Factory in North Fort Myers is planning a country music jam and barbecue. Fishermen’s Village in Punta Gorda has announced plans for a weekend celebration. We’ve also heard reports of fireworks in Bonita Springs, Fort Myers Beach and Punta Gorda.

Concerts and cruises

Concerts and cruises are returning to Florida. More big name national acts have recently announced their tour schedules for summer and fall. Locally, Jason Aldean will bring his tour to Hertz Arena Oct. 28, and Marc Anthony is set for Nov. 5. Alabama’s rescheduled show will finally take place in June at the arena. Seminole Casino Hotel has said concerts are returning. So far, they have Blue Oyster Cult, Guess Who, Kenny G and Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell and Fabian on the schedule. Additionally, music cruises are returning in late 2021 and early 2022. Malt Shop Memories, Country Music Cruise, Soul Train Cruise, 70s Rock and Romance Cruise, Ultimate Disco Cruise and the Flower Power Cruise are great options for our cruise fans. Rock on,

THEATRE

The Wedding Singer

opens June 23 at The Naples Players

Big hair and shoulder pads at the ready - It's time to rediscover the ‘80s. Your favorite Adam Sandler movie in musical form takes the stage in Blackburn Hall at The Naples Players from June 23 - July 25. The Wedding Singer’s sparkling new score does for the ‘80s what Hairspray did for the ‘60s. Just say “yes” to the most romantic musical in twenty years. Things are going pretty well for wedding singer Robbie Hart (Joseph Byrne) until he’s left at the altar by his fiancé, Linda (Erica Sample). As he struggles to pick up the pieces and continue performing at other people’s weddings, he befriends Julia Sullivan (Alyssa Haney). Julia is preparing for her wedding to long term boyfriend Glen (David Shaffer) - whose commitment to their relationship is questionable, to say the least. Robbie agrees to help Julia plan her wedding when complications arise and the two spend more and more time with each other... With fan-favorite director and choreographer Dawn Lebrecht Fornara and musical director Charles Fornara at the helm of this production, you will certainly be dancing in your seat. “The Wedding Singer musical has been on our to-do list for some time,” says Bryce Alexander, CEO & executive artistic director. “The show is funny, poignant, and a great way for audiences who have been disconnected, or in quarantine, to have a little fun. As they say in the show, it’s time for our audiences to ‘come out of the dumpster’ of COVID19.” 6 - JUNE 2021

The Fornaras will be leading an all-star ensemble cast of Naples favorites, many of whom have become regular staples of The Naples Players most popular shows. The cast includes (in alphabetical order): Joseph Byrne, Adam Fasano, Alyssa Haney, Ruth Johnson, Christine Mastrangelo, Srica Sample, David Shaffer, Kenny Tran, Lindsey Walsh, and Dominic Young in the principal roles, and features Leonard Allen, Sade Bassan, Abby Ciabaton, Jim Corsica, Jessica Daniels, Luke Danni, Maxine Danni, Kat Ebaugh, Frankie Federico, Kay Harkins, Madeleine Howe, Danaia Ivanov, Naphtailda JeanCharles, Monica Joyce, Joseph Loiacono, Elizabeth Marcantonio, Sydney Mixon, Lexi Piper, Andrew Reid, Eileen Reynolds, Thomas Richardson and Ciarán Welch in the ensemble. To alleviate the concern and spread of COVID-19, the theatre will be limiting capacity. Tickets are expected to sell quickly. A red carpet event, open to the public, is slated for Wednesday, June 23 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and features local vendors, food, drinks, and live music from the band Chariot. Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Both general public and season tickets are on sale at the TNP Box Office. Those interested can visit online at www.NaplesPlayers.org anytime or call the TNP Box Office at 239-263-7990. The theatre is located at 701 5th Ave.. S. in Naples. Happenings Magazine

Florida Rep will return to indoor stage in September THEATRE

Florida Repertory Theatre has announce its reimagined 2021-2022 season in the Historic Arcade Theatre and the ArtStage Studio Theatre, setting a first indoor performance for Sept. 28. After an 18-month intermission, the company plans to return to a full nineshow season bringing professional theatre back to the heart of the downtown Fort Myers River District. “We’ve been waiting for months to announce our exciting new plans for the 2021-2022 Season,” said artistic director Greg Longenhagen, “but we can’t move forward without looking back to thank our senior staff, ensemble of artists, volunteers, and loyal patrons and donors for sticking by us as we weathered this storm. Because of our staff’s tireless work and our patrons’ unwavering support, we will emerge stronger than ever, and I am deeply grateful.” Longenhagen continued, “You’ll recognize many of these titles from our postponed 2020-2021 season, but there are some impactful changes and outstanding additions. As we emerge from almost two years of isolation and virtual interactions, we wanted to offer you stories about hope, human connection, and renewal. Florida Rep’s signature wide variety remains intact, but we’ve coalesced around themes that lift us up and offer an escape. We cannot wait to see you inside the theatre soon!” The 2021-2022 season opens in the ArtStage Studio Theatre Sept. 28 with Let’s Fall in Love: A World-Premiere Cabaret Event saluting Nat King Cole and a host of singers from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s who made the era a golden age of American music. Chicago-based performer, Evan Tyrone Martin, stars in the concert that pays homage not only to Cole, but to Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Bing Crosby and more. The Historic Arcade Theatre opens Oct. 26 with the thrilling ghost story The 8 - JUNE 2021

Woman in Black adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the novel by Susan Hill. The season continues with an unprecedented co-production between Florida Rep and its Education Department’s Conservatory Program. Young artists from across Southwest Florida will join a professional cast of Florida Rep ensemble members and guest artists in the classic American musical, West Side Story, which opens Nov. 23. Florida Rep begins the new year with two uplifting stories about love, new beginnings, and friendship: a brand-new comedy Morning After Grace by Carey Crim, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic Driving Miss Daisy by Alfred Uhry. Morning After Grace is an unconventional new comedy set in a Gulf coast retirement community that tackles love, loss, growing older with style, and opens Jan. 4 in the Arcade Theatre. Set in post WWII Atlanta, Driving Miss Daisy tells a timeless story about an unlikely friendship that lasts a lifetime. The modern classic begins performances in the ArtStage Studio on Jan. 18. Into the Breeches by George Brant opens to previews Feb. 8 in the Arcade Theatre. This brand-new comedy is a patriotic and heart-warming story of coming together in a crisis and follows a theatre troupe during World War II. The men are overseas, and for the ladies of the company, the show must go on! They

decide not to cancel their production of Shakespeare’s Henry V, and step into all the roles – forging new bonds of sisterhood in the process. The most exciting addition to the new season is a reimagined remounting of the theatre’s shuttered 2020 production of A Doll’s House, Part 2 by Lucas Hnath. The electrifying and razor-sharp sequel to Ibsen’s 1879 masterpiece was one day away from its first audience when the theatre closed its doors in 2020. The same cast and creative team are assembled for the 2022 staging of A Doll’s House, Part 2, but it’s not a direct remount. The new production is slated to run in the intimate ArtStage Studio Theatre, which means audiences will be in the center of the action as Nora Helmer confronts her past, her ex-husband, her now-grown daughter, and their long-suffering housekeeper. This time when the sparks fly, audiences will have a front-row seat. The Arcade lineup comes to a sensational end with with the original rock ‘n’ roll musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story by Alan Janes. Opening March 15, the musical shows audiences how Buddy Holly became the musical legend he is today. The final offering in the 2021-2022 season is Audrey Cefaly’s new romantic comedy, Maytag Virgin, opening April 12 in the ArtStage Studio. One of the hottest plays in America right now, “Maytag Virgin” is an old-fashioned southern romance about two people who thought they’d never find love again. This captivating and often hilarious love story has the perfect message to conclude a season built on renewal, redemption, and connection. Single tickets are on sale now at www.FloridaRep.org along with subscription order forms and more information about each production. To order tickets or a subscription over the phone, call the box office at 239-332-4488. Happenings Magazine

Charlotte Players: Men Are Dogs Southwest Florida playwright Joe Simonelli is coming back to the Charlotte Players after the successful run of his Valentine’s Day play With This Ring in February. This time up, he’s directing his flagship play and one of his most popular comedies, Men Are Dogs. “This play has been performed by many theatres in the U.S. and Canada since it premiered in 2003,” he said. The show sold out 20-plus performances at the Lemon Bay Playhouse a few years ago as the fastest-selling play in the theater’s history. Three of the actors are reprising their roles for the current production at Charlotte Players. “It’s a play about a single and divorced women’s group therapy sessions that even the men in the audience will appreciate and laugh at,” Simonelli said. “I’ve assembled a great cast, including the returning actors.” The therapist who runs the support group, Dr. Cecelia Monahan, must listen to the relationship problems of her unusual cadre of patients as well as dealing with the unsolicited advice of her

live-in mother on subjects ranging from dating to cooking recipes. The doctor, however, is not above using some unorthodox methods of her own such as hiring out-of-work actors to role play with her patients. It is only when Cecelia meets the new substitute package delivery man that the doctor must learn to practice what she preaches. As with almost every Simonelli play, you can expect plot twists and surprises along the way. The show will play for only six performances so be sure to make your reservations early before the show sells out. Men are Dogs opens at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 11. There are additional evening performances on Saturday, June 12; Friday, June 18; Saturday, June 19; plus 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday, June 13 and June 20. Tickets are $22 for adults and $11 for students and may be ordered at www.charlotteplayers.org or by calling 941-255-1022 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Starting June 1, artists and crafters can submit their works for display consideration in the new Charlotte Players Artist Gallery, located in the lounge at the Langdon Playhouse. “Our goal is to offer artists a place to display their talents and our patrons an opportunity to see many quality works of art,” said Charlotte Players executive director Sherrie Moody. “We initiated a trial art display the first week of January that has proven to be very successful. Our slatwall in the concession area is perfect for displaying paintings, photos, wreaths and any other pieces that can be hung on a wall. Artists, writers, musicians and crafters are invited to submit their works for display in the new gallery. “As a non-profit organization, we seek diversified revenue sources,” Moody said. “We are asking for a minimum of 50 percent of the sale price to be a tax-deductible donation to our theater. Any donation of the sale price over the minimum is greatly appreciated.” Coordination of works to be displayed will be done by artist gallery coordinator Sue Arnold, who may be reached at 941204-7525 or scubasue2@comcast.net.

ART

Arts for ACT Gallery showcases works of Pat Cleveland and two more generations

Arts for ACT Gallery will feature abstract resin pours and realism from three generations of artists from one family. The exhibit will feature the late Pat Cleveland, a donator to Arts for ACT for over 28 years, her daughter, Bonnie Turner, and her grandson, Brock Turner, throughout June. Also showing will be new works from the gallery co-op artists. An opening reception will be held Friday, June 4 form 6 to 10 p.m. in conjunction with Fort Myers Art Walk. Pat Cleveland, at age 3, copied a painting on her mother’s easel … this started a lifelong passion to paint. Graduating from the Pratt Institute of Design in New York, she was an interior designer until she retired. Upon retirement, Cleveland began to paint and was an award-winning artist. She had several solo exhibits across the United States producing mostly realistic art. As Pat aged, she was diagnosed with macular degeneration and soon became legally blind. Her love of painting continued, but her style changed to abstract realism, becoming a looser painter with more vivid colors. Seeing an ad in an art catalog for acrylic pour paints, she became excited and at 85, explored the wonderful world of You Tube. Watching the acrylic pour videos. She promptly sent Bonnie to the store for supplies. This began the painting of a three-generation family. Brock Turner with a construction background soon began teaching the very creative ways to produce an acrylic pour and to have fun as an artistic family until Pat passed away in late 2019. Brock and Bonnie Turner continue to paint to the pour, processing their grief through therapeutic art. They soon began posting to Instagram, and have taught acrylic pour classes. In recent months, Brock has started his own YouTube Channel and posting on TikTok. He is currently trending on social media. Pat Cleveland died Dec. 16, 2019, at the age of 85. This exhibit continues through Monday, June 28. Arts for ACT Gallery provides a quality, contemporary exhibition gallery featuring original art, limited edition prints, giclees, hand-crafted fine crafts, tee shirts, silver and glass bead jewelry, gourd art, raku, Brock Turner

Spencer Elles at DAAS Co-Op Gallery

In the month of June, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is celebrating Pride month and featuring the art of LGBTQ+ member artist Spencer Elles. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 4 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through June 26. Spencer Elles is a multifaceted queer artist currently residing in Fort Myers. In addition to being being a full-time videographer, musical artist and online content creator, he has been a working digital illustrator since 2003, originally specializing in graphic illustrations for band merchandise, album art and event flyers. After coming out as an openly gay artist in his early 20's, he has since been creating a large body of homo-erotic works that he proudly displays alongside the non-sexually

charged pieces of his portfolio. He openly sites most of his artistic inspiration from his “nerdy” love of anime, video games, punk-culture and gay Japanese adult comics. The concept behind this exhibition titled "uhhhh... I guess this is my art show or whatever. (AKA the duality of man) yes... that's the full title" is to display the juxtaposition of what he

describes as "the 2 sides of his brain"- the silly, uplifting, cheeky little punk kid he is at heart and the "sexuallycharged" that lies beneath it all, often exemplified thru his lyrics as a gay rap artist. Also in June, the classes hosted by published author Winslow E. Dixon continue. Topics include book publishing, selfcare and homeopathic home living, among others. For a class schedule and sign-up link visit www.daascoop.com/events. The gallery invites all Southwest Florida art collectors, supporters and enthusiasts to join us for the opening reception on June 4. DAAS Co-Op is located at 1815 Fowler St., in the Butterfly Estates complex in Fort Myers. The gallery’s temporary business hours are Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information about the venue or how to become a member can be found at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645.

The installation represents the three zones of interdependent coral reef ecosystems: Mangrove Forest; Sea Grass; and Coral

This textile exhibition with a conservation message is currently scheduling a global tour for the next five years, says project spokesperson Doris Florig. The Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at FSW announces the premiere of Mark Mothersbaugh and Beatie Wolfe’s collective art campaign, Postcards for Democracy. The resulting gallery exhibition is expansive, immersive and participatory, but the concept continues to be quite simple: Create and mail your postcard design to 8760 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90069 to become part of this art demonstration and in doing so support USPS and democracy in the process. Artistic visionaries Mark Mothersbaugh and Beatie Wolfe – who share a love of tangible art-forms, in and amongst their futuristic explorations – joined forces to create Postcards for Democracy, a collective art campaign in support of the United States Postal Service (USPS) and its essential role in our elections. The pair have received thousands of cards to date covering themes such as Covid, democracy, capitalism, the environment, social injustice, science and even insomnia. Together these postcards (like the exhibition itself) form something of a time capsule – reflecting our collective experience personally, socially, soci-

etally, politically and environmentally – while the archive expands with ongoing contributions. Now through August, the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery will collaborate with the artists to present a site-specific installation: the first public showing of Postcards for Democracy. Both Mothersbaugh and Wolfe have strong ties with Rauschenberg’s work and ethos, Mothersbaugh in his adoption of pop imagery and early experimentation with industrial printing techniques (including cyanotype) and Wolfe due to her reboot of the Rauschenberg founded E.A.T. program (Experiments in Art and Technology) of the ‘60s with her Raw Space project. As a young art student at Kent State University, Mothersbaugh first started making postcard art in the early 1970s and exchanging work with known and unknown artists alike. Through these exchanges, he realized that he was creating an image bank and a lyric collection that served as a basis of inspiration that he would later use in the creation of his seminal artrock band, DEVO. Singer-songwriter Beatie Wolfe is an artist who has beamed her music into space, been appointed a U.N. Women role model for innovation, and held an acclaimed solo exhibition of her world first album designs at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The exhibit opened May 15 and runs through Aug. 8. The Bob Rauschenberg Gallery is located on the campus of Florida SouthWestern College, 8099 College Parkway, Fort Myers. For more info, visit www.rauschenberggallery.com or call 239-489-9313.

ambush in Niger. A veteran of multiple USO Tours, Niemann knew how much those heroes were willing to sacrifice in the name of duty – from missing their children’s first steps and soccer games to holidays, anniversaries and so much more. He performed “Old Glory” live for the first time during that year’s USO Holiday Tour, and is now bringing it to the American public. Also in 2017, Niemann dug deep into his journey for critically-acclaimed album THIS RIDE – which includes the feel-good jam, “I Got This,” the uplifting duet “A Little More Love” (with Lee Brice) and the classy romance of “God Made a Woman.” Known for clever wordplay and attention-grabbing lyrics, the engaging singersongwriter topped country charts with his Platinumcertified anthem “Drink to That All Night,” a multiweek #1 from the 2014

album High Noon – on which he cowrote eight of the 12 tracks.

Randy Houser With an inimitable voice the New York Times describes as "wholly different, thicker and more throbbing, a caldron bubbling over," Randy Houser racked up five consecutive country radio hits and over five million singles sales after shifting record labels to Stoney Creek Records. He topped the charts with the "How Country Feels," “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight," “Goodnight Kiss," (also his first No. 1 as a songwriter), "We Went," and earned critical acclaim for his powerful delivery of the Top 5 smash and CMA Song of the Year-nominated "Like A Cowboy." Houser spent the majority of 2017 in the studio consumed by his much anticipated new project while also being tapped to perform at major country music festivals.
