Summer of theatre

Boy, has our theatre season really slowed down from just a couple of months ago. But have no fear, we still have some great choices to get us through the summer. Broadway Palm Theatre gives us the hit musical Rock of Ages. It plays now through June 25. This electrifying musical lets you experience a lengthy list of hit songs from the 1980s. After taking a little break, The Naples Players are back in action this month. Something Rotten will open June 22 and play through July 24 at the Sugden Theatre. The Center for the Arts Bonita Springs has had a programming change. Instead of The Jacksonian, a new comedy is on stage at the Performing Arts Center. A Girl’s Guide to Chaos plays May 27 through June 5. Laboratory Theater of Florida kicks off its summer season with The Birds: A Parody. This original creation opens June 3 and runs through July 2 at the downtown Fort Myers theatre. In Cape Coral, the Cultural Park Theater has announced a spectacular schedule of shows for its 60th anniversary season. The 2022-23 Broadway series includes School of Rock The Musical, Steel Magnolias, Pippin, The Sound of Music, Rumors, Grease, Crimes of the Heart and Private Lives. For fans of community theatre, the annual aact WorldFest returns to the Venice Theatre June 20 - 26. The American Association of Community Theatre’s festival includes performances, workshops and networking.

Support local

Now that the “Snowbirds” have flown north for the summer, we locals have a wonderful responsibility to show some love for our local businesses and communities. Our entertainment establishments and arts organizations need our support in season and out of season. As for theatre, season packages are available now.

4 - JUNE 2022

It’s also at this time of the year when we can get a better seat at our favorite bar or restaurant and support local and live music. Or perhaps, you want to catch a summer concert indoors (in the air conditioning) at Hertz Arena or The Ranch Concert Hall. Art galleries do not close for the summer. They need to maintain a steady flow of traffic to keep the doors open all year. It’s only with our support that these businesses and organizations truly thrive. Yes, the seasonal visitors are a wonderful boost for our economy, but it is also our duty to support the local merchants who do business here in Southwest Florida (aka “paradise”).

More concerts

Speaking of concerts, Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee has started to announce some of its concerts for the fall. They include Trace Adkins on Oct. 14, Smash Mouth on Oct. 29 and Here Come The Mummies on Nov. 4. Stay tuned for more concert announcements from this great venue. Red White and Boom returns in Cape Coral for the Fourth of July. This year’s headliner will be country sensation LoCash. Hertz Arena in Estero is beefing up its concert schedule in 2022. So far, the music lineup includes Brooks and Dunn, Dierks Bentley, Travis Tritt, Luke Bryan, Pitbull, Cody Johnson, Randy Houser and more. The Ranch Concert Hall and Saloon in Fort Myers has a great lineup of country and rock artists. That schedule includes Stryper, Chase Matthew, Canaan Smith, Wheeler Walker Jr., Adam Calhoun, Buckcherry, Cinderella’s Tom Keifer Band, LA Guns, Faster Pussycat, Daughtry, Pop Evil, Trey Lewis, Eddie Montgomery, Tracy Lawrence and David Lee Murphy. Rock on,

The Naples Players

starting the summer with a musical farce

Welcome to the Renaissance. Something Rotten, the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, takes the stage in Blackburn Hall at The Naples Players from June 22 through July 24. Something Rotten was hailed by The New York Times as "the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years." Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick Bottom (Mark Vanagas) and Nigel (Eduardo Marin) are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz. “Something Rotten has something for everyone” says director and choreographer Dawn LebrechtFornara. “If you hate Shakespeare, you'll love it. If you love Shakespeare, you'll love it. If you hate musicals, you'll love it. If you love musicals, you'll love it.” Lebrecht-Fornara will be joined by music director Charles Fornara to lead an all-star ensemble cast of Naples favorites, many of whom have Happenings Magazine

become regular staples of The Naples Players most popular shows. The cast includes (in alphabetical order): Brad Brenner, Jamielynn Bucci, Joe Byrne, Adam Fasano, Jeremy Giovinazzo, Ralph Krumins, Eduardo Marin, Erica Sample, Mark Vanagas and Jack Weld in the principal roles. It also features Gaby Alezard, Santiago Alezard, Leonard Allen, Brian Boland, Mckenna Cloud, Jillian Cossetta, Luke Danni, Maxine Danni, Frankie Federico, Jacob Feltman, Naphtailda JeanCharles, Jillian Keith, Kelsey Lafrenais, Thomas Richardson, Sophia Rissi, Kenny Tran, Preslie True, Lorelai Vega and Ciaran Welch in the ensemble. A red carpet event open to the public is slated for Wednesday, June 22 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and features local vendors, food, drinks and live music from the band Chariot. From June 22 - July 24, performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Both single and season tickets are on sale for $47 at the TNP Box Office. Those interested can visit NaplesPlayers.org anytime or call the TNP Box Office at 239-2637990. The Naples Players perform at Sugden Theatre at 701 5Th Ave. S. in Naples. JUNE 2022 - 7

THEATRE

The Birds: A Parody at The Laboratory Theater of Florida The Laboratory Theater of Florida will present the world premiere of The Birds: A Parody from June 3 to July 2. This laugh-out-loud parody features our heroes battling evil birds with plans to terrorize humans based on the classic Hitchcock film. Wealthy San Francisco socialite Melanie Daniels pursues potential suitor Mitch Brenner to a quaint seaside town where all manner of mayhem begins to take over, most notably bizarre behavior from all types of birds, from crows to gulls to delicious, sugar-coated Peeps, which begin to attack the town. The theater intends to set a new world record for the most Peeps used in a live performance and the most Peeps used during an entire production run. Director Annette Trossbach says, “The Birds, a Parody is our most over-the-top campy summer show yet. It’s an extravaganza! Whether you remember the Hitchcock film or not, you’ll love Melanie Daniels talking back to the audience, and this cast of zany townspeople and attack birds.” Adapted and directed by Annette Trossbach, and workshopped by this tight-

ART

Sathiel Profeta Ramos’ artistic photography at DAAS Gallery

Sathiel Profeta Ramos 12 - JUNE 2022

In the month of June, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the art of photographer Sathiel Profeta Ramos. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 3 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through Sunday, June 26. The collection on display, from the L' Atelier Sathiel series, is an exploration of the male human form. These tasteful nudes represent a perspective rarely exhibited in our area. The artist aligns with the vision of the venue, which has historically pushed the boundaries with daring exhibitions, such as the group show Skin (2009 and 2011) and The Duality of Man by Spencer Elles in 2021. Profeta Ramos wants to celebrate the freedom of acceptance and pride, coinciding with local LGBTQA+ community celebrations of equality and acceptance. Originally from Manila, Philippines, Sathiel Profeta Ramos started dreaming to be a photographer at the age of 8, while attending a local convent. He always aspired to travel the world. He discovered his love for photography, being his first assignment the Afterglow 99 - his own college yearbook as the class photo editor. Right after college he opened his own portrait salon studio in his hometown. He travelled intensively through 70 countries for two decades, later becoming a freelance travel photojournalist. He lived in Europe for 5 years, later moving to the United States due to the European Crisis in Greece. Amidst the pandemic, dealing with a lot of losses and health issues in 2020, he formed a male erotic art group called Human Perspective 33990, as his scapegoat for his depression and fears. Today the group is expanding numbers of active male models around the U.S., while extending his affiliation through Europe and Asia. Art lovers, collectors and enthusiasts are invited to meet the artist during the Fort Myers Art Walk reception June 3. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly Estates complex in Fort Myers. The gallery’s business hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information about the gallery can be found at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645. Happenings Magazine

Arts for ACT Gallery features Pam Jones

Arts for ACT Gallery is featuring the art of Pam Jones in June. An opening reception is planned for Friday, June 3 from 6 to 9 pm. in conjunction with Fort Myers art Walk. A self-taught mixed media artist, Pamela Jones resides in Punta Gorda. She always has been attracted to religious, ethnic and folkloric imagery, roadside memorials, home altars, shrines and outsider art. Her work consists of carefully crafted assemblages made with found objects, thrift store treasures and random stuff. Jones’ “Gypsy Jazz” mixed media and fiber art series celebrates the colors, textures and vibrance of gypsy life and the music of legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Each piece starts with an altered vintage or repurposed item, such as a souvenir spoon display, embellished with fabric, ribbon, rope and beads, concealing antique bells, balls and other hidden treasures. “Chair Shrines” honor the Holy Mother and female saints in unique sculptural assemblages created with toy and children’s chairs, vintage

figurines and themed adornments. Jones’ first and ongoing projects include “Shelliquaries,” antique-looking portable shrines built around bone-like shells. In 2020, her Shelliquary “2 Relics” won first prize at the Color exhibit at the Visual Arts Center in Punta Gorda. For two consecutive years, Shelliquaries have been juried into exhibits of the International Society of Experimental Artists, in Pennsylvania and Alberta, Canada. Others recently were juried into sacred art exhibits in Pennsylvania and Illinois. Shelliquaries are held in private collections from Florida to Washington. Discovering a trove of vintage rubber clown heads at a junk store led Jones to create the “Bad Clowns” series, reflecting coulrophobia, or fear and loathing of clowns. Jones also creates “Art Nativities” with repurposed objects and vintage figures. They are shown seasonally at select regional galleries and gift shops. Arts for ACT Gallery is located at 2265 First St. in downtown Fort Myers. Contact the gallery at 239-337-5050.

Lorne’s Gallery and Frame Gallery & Gifts are long-time art businesses in Cape Coral ART

Lorne’s Gallery is situated at The Westin and next door to Pinchers Crab Shack at Tarpon Point Marina. Gallery owners Barbara and Lorne Hosack have spent most of their lives producing and selling coastal art. This family operation located at Tarpon Point Marina is an extension of their imagination. Aside from being extremely interesting to pass through and look at all the sundries at Lorne’s Gallery the view of all the wonderful boats and restaurants is something that looks like it should be in Naples. If you spend five minutes sauntering through the 3,000 square-foot gallery, you won’t have seen it all. There’s so much to see. With over 500 pictures stacked here in there and over 20,000 images in print exclusive to Lorne’s Gallery and their other gallery, Frame Gallery and Gifts, there’s too much to comprehend. Additionally, the galleries offer high end printing. They have thousands of images that are exclusive to them. “That means that we own the originals, we own the printing rights, and we do the printing ourselves,” says Lorne. “The newest process is called giclee printing. After scanning the original and color correcting it in the computer, we are able to change the size and color of anything that they print. And then after printing, they are the framers we frame small we frame big and we frame with our customers in mind. We are picky with our art and with the framing process.” He adds, “For example, we do small things, we do big things, we do the hard jobs that most people shutter about doing; we make it easy. Barbara is excellent at color matching. She can find the right color blend of mats to produce a wonderful extension of the artwork that you want framed.”

Lorne Hosack

Lorne says, “One of our favorite pieces of art that we do is our local charts. These charts are nautical charts that we put artwork on. … It’s not just a map, it’s a piece of art then we print and frame this wonderful piece of art. The end result is something that is informative because you can show your guests where the names are of all the places you want to go and it still decorative.” The main gallery, that’s been located on Del Prado Boulevard in Cape Coral for over 30 years, is across from Wal-mart and approximately 5,000 square feet. For those customers who have a hard time deciding what image they will like in their home, they offer something called a 24 hour check out. This allows the buyer to take a framed piece of art home or several and look at that them in their own environment. This really helps an individual find the perfect piece for their home. The monthly music and art night will take place Saturday, June 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lorne’s Gallery at Tarpon Point. It will feature music by Tommy Dee and Dee and the art of Lorne Hosack. Frame Gallery and Gifts is located at 1830 Del Prado Blvd. in Cape Coral, and can be reached by calling 239-574-5111. The Road to Florida exhibit at Davis Art Center

The Road to Florida juried art exhibit will be featured in the downstairs Grand Atrium of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in June. This juried show asked: What brought you to Florida? Are you a Florida born? What keeps you in Florida? The sunshine state has many things to offer, beautiful beaches, great weather all year round, natural wonders, and exuberant vegetation.

For this year’s challenge, the art center wanted to see what brought you to Florida or what is keeping you here. Artists were invited to let their imagination run wild to show why they love Florida. Prizes will be awarded: $500 for Best in Show, $250 for SBDAC Staff Pick and $250 for People’s Choice. Upstairs in the Capital Gallery, an exhibit titled Elementary will showcase the talents of local elementary students. Both galleries are open for viewing June 3 - 24. Opening night for both exhibitions will be during Art Walk on Friday, June 3 from 6 to 10 p.m. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located in the heart of historic downtown Fort Myers at 2301 First St. For more information, visit www.sbdac.com or call 239-333-1933.

ART

The art of decorating with art

Are you uncertain how to incorporate art into your home? The professionals at ArtBeat Studios Gallery and Gifts can help. Located at 1400 Colonial Blvd., suite 35, Fort Myers, ArtBeat Studios has just the right piece for you. It’s often helpful to group art pieces with a common theme. Choose a few coordinating colors and find some artwork you like with those colors in common. You don’t need to stick with paintings or canvases—you can display photos, pop art or vintage posters, too. It is important to make sure your artwork represents you. Choose art that you like, that reflects your interests. Opt for art that speaks to you and your personality. Never choose art or art styles because they are popular or trendy. Consider the space you are decorating. Do you want to add a sense of calm to a bedroom or inject an energetic vibe to your office or kitchen? Look for pieces that make you feel good in your own home. Think outside the box: If you typically are drawn to neutrals or black & white, try going out of your comfort zone by choosing at least one piece with a punch of color. Art doesn’t have to be serious! Find pieces that make you smile and uplift your mood. Hanging artwork can be a challenge, and this is where a site like Pinterest may be helpful. Gallery walls can be organized and pulled together by creating a tight, geometric arrangement, or be more organic and free-flowing. Take height into consideration when hanging artwork. In a dining room or sitting room, hang your artwork a little lower than in rooms or hallways where you’re usually Anja Trepper standing.

Many Florida homes have awkward spaces. Whether you need decorating on the lanai or on an 12” wall, the talented artists at ArtBeat Studios can create an original piece just for you. Neenie’s House premieres

The East Palm Club (indoors)

Summer is here, and a lot of outdoor events will cease to exist for awhile. So Janeen Vanko, owner of Neenie’s House, had to come up with an indoor space for her events. She has re-invented her interior space as a “bohemian chic” nightclub. No weather issues now. The East Palm Club will be an available space for those who want to do house shows. Neenie’s has had a lot of “drop the mic” type shows in her outdoor venue. But she sees the need for these artists to take the next step up, and perform their artistry in a nightclub setting, doing a whole set of their repertoire. So the thought is to have a more chill environment, spotlighting performers, doing jazz or R&B. But she would love to have a comedy night, or opera. Anything is possible. The space is intimate, so a trio would probably be the max group. But the single artist performance is really what she would like to see happen. In Neenie’s effort to create a Funkytown in East Fort Myers, she has given a platform to upcoming artists to get their artistry on. Opening the East Palm Club, will be another venue for performers to do their show in an air conditioned, and really cool space. Currently, every Tuesday night at 8 pm, is a free show of live music. The recent opening night went really well. Everyone loved the feel of the club, along with dancing out on the patio. So come check it out on a Tuesday night. And call Janeen Vanko at 224-6784901 to book any shows. "Let's make it happen," says Vanko. Neenie’s House is located at 481 Marsh Ave., just off Palm Beach Boulevard 22 - JUNE 2022

Seminole Casino Hotel announces fall concerts

Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee has announced its first round of concerts for the fall which includes Trace Adkins, Smash Mouth and Here Come The Mummies. Nashville icon Trace Adkins will perform live in concert at Seminole Casino Hotel on Friday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. as part of his “The Way I Wanna Go Tour.” Advance tickets are on sale now for $99 and are available by phone from Ticketmaster at 1-800-653-8000 or online at www.moreinparadise.com. Adkins is 25 years into a career filled with bold authenticity and chart-topping smashes, fusing a booming baritone and commanding stage presence with sounds from all across the Country spectrum. Since his debut in 1996, the larger-than-life star has sold over 11 million albums and charted more than 37 singles, sending 14 into Billboard’s Top 10. He’s also racked up two billion streams and boasts a reputation for fiery live performance – not to mention his multiple Grammy nominations, awards from the ACM and CMT, and a willingness to think outside the box. Now, with his 13th studio album, “The Way I Wanna Go,” 25 all-new tracks celebrate the 25th anniversary of his “Dreamin’ Out Loud” debut. Steeped in the cultural melting-pot of his Louisiana upbringing, “The Way I Wanna Go” finds Adkins leaning in to a lone-wolf spirit, and continuing down the road which made him a shapeshifting member of the Grand Ole Opry. 102.9 BOBfm and Mix 104.7 present multi-platinum group Smash Mouth with new front man Zach Goode performing at Seminole Casino Hotel Saturday, Oct. 29 at Happenings Magazine
