Theatre updates
The theatre season in Southwest Florida has slowed down quite a bit for late spring and early summer. Yet there remains some activity on some of our local stages. Fringe Fort Myers performing arts festival debuts June 1 - 4 at the Alliance for the Arts and the Off Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers. Broadway Palm in Fort Myers brings us the hit musical Footloose. That plays May 26 through July 1. In Cape Coral, the fine folks at Cultural Park Theater present Crimes of the Heart on stage June 1 through June 11. The Laboratory Theater of Florida gives us a spoof on Shakespeare with Save Hamlet. This world premiere will run June 2 to June 24 in downtown Fort Myers. In Naples, The Naples Players are gearing up for their summer musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame July 5 through July 23. This will be staged at the Community School of Naples where TheatreZone calls home. The Naples Players are on the road for awhile as they undergo major renovations to their 5th Avenue South building. In other theatre matters, we have some good news and some bad news. Sadly, New Phoenix Theatre in Fort Myers is no longer. Brenda Kensler and her colleagues performed their last show (Into the Woods) at the end of April. Meanwhile, the good news is that Players Circle Theater will be taking over their theatrical space in McGregor Boulevard starting July 1. Players Circle Theatre has been producing shows at The Shell Factory in North Fort Myers. The Charlotte Players will be among the participants in a Charlotte County Arts Showcase on

Music on the high seas
My wife (Kathy) and l love to cruise, but more precisely we enjoy going on music themed cruises. We partner with the fine folks at StarVista Live who charter ships and put on a long list of music themed cruises. Together, we can offer our readers special savings on their cabin prices. What’s so wonderful about these music cruises is that the performing artists are super fan friendly and do more than just perform at their shows. They interact with the people onboard. It’s like having a backstage pass for the entire cruise. The next round of music cruises (from either Ft. Lauderdale or Miami) has been announced, and when you use the promo code ”Happenings” on any of these, you can save some serious money. Some are already sold out and have a waiting list (just in case of cancellations), while others like the 70s Rock Cruise have very few cabins left. Take a look at these great music themed cruises (there’s something for just about everybody): The Malt Shop Memories Cruise sails Oct. 28 - Nov. 4 (waiting list) and The Big Easy Cruise is Nov. 4 - 11 of this year. In 2024, the Sandy Beaches Cruise is Jan. 13 - 20, The Country Music Cruise sails Jan. 20 - 27 (waiting list), Soul Train Cruise is Jan. 27 - Feb. 3 (waiting list), the 70s Rock and Romance Cruise (50 cabins remain) sails March 14 - 21 and the Flower Power Cruise is March 21 - 28 (waiting list). Book your music cruise now and save. Rock on,

Following the preview show, there will be one performance in each venue. The festival continues Friday, June 2 when part of the Alliance for the Arts sidewalk along McGregor Boulevard will be devoted to the inaugural “Ministry of Silly Walks” competition, which is sure to delight Monty Python fans. Naples Players: Hunchback of Notre Dame
8 - JUNE 2023
The Naples Players Present The Hunchback of Notre Dame July 5 - 23 at the Community School of Naples, 13275 Livingston Road, home of TheatreZone. What makes a monster and what makes a man? This timeless retelling of Victor Hugo’s renowned novel, partnered with Disney & Alan Menken’s sweeping score and Stephen Schwartz’s moving lyrics, demonstrates the power of love, acceptance, and what it means to be a hero. Featuring a live 13-piece orchestra, 16-person choir, and extraordinary ensemble of performers; and with sound design by Tony Award nominee Joshua D. Reid, this performance is not to be missed. The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fif-
teenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be “Out There,” observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful Romani woman, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the Roma – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them. Forced to stay on the run, the infamous duo’s fame grows, and their inevitable ends draws nearer. The Tony Award-nominated show’s music is by the legendary Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde, Civil War, Dracula), with lyrics by Don Black and book by Ivan Menchell.
Million Dollar Quartet Feb. 8 – 18

The Tony Award-nominated musical Million Dollar Quartet brings the night to life with performances by world-class actors and musicians. The tale of broken promises, secrets, betrayals, and celebrations includes smash hits such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Walk the Line,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Hound Dog,” and much more. by legendary composer Cy Coleman, relates the incredible story of Belle Poitrine, born in humble circumstances but determined to gain wealth, culture and social position. She achieves diva status through advantageous marriages and love affairs, bringing her the stature she seeks when the men meet unfortunate and comic ends at opportune moments. The story is based on a novel by Patrick Dennis (Auntie Mame). The show debuted on Broadway in 1962 starring Sid Caesar with choreography by Bob Fosse. Its ongoing appeal and success inspired several revivals and multiple Tony Award nominations.

Save Hamlet
THEATRE
at Laboratory Theater of Florida through June 24
The Laboratory Theater of Florida will present the world premiere of Mark Harvey Levine’s Save Hamlet June 2 to June 24. In this joke-packed spoof of Shakespeare's most famous play, Hamlet’s friends fight against evil kings, the narrative, and giant pool noodles to Save Hamlet! In addition to the prestige of being a world premiere, this show Steven Coe as Hamlet was a runner-up for the 2022 Louise Wigglesworth Excellence in Playwriting Award. Artistic Director Annette Trossbach says, "Hamlet is the second-most analyzed and criticized piece of literature in the Western world. Even people who have not read it recognize quotes and scenarios because they've been in our cultural consciousness for 400 years. Furthermore, it's June, the month of Lab Theater parodies. This show so delightfully turns everything on its head with fast-paced silliness that audiences will be giggling all the way through. And our version does not feature the poison-tipped swords - so bring the entire family." Director Madelaine Weymouth says, “Love it or leave it, Hamlet is one of the most famous plays of all time. I got away with pretending to read it my senior year in high school, and then promptly had to read it for real once I was a freshman in college. And then again as a junior in college. And it holds a very special place in my heart, but Save Hamlet makes all the fun easier for today’s audiences to enjoy." Mark Harvey Levine, a finalist of Lab Theater’s New Play Contest in 2022, has written a goofy, charming, laugh-a-minute comedy that is funny even if you don’t know the difference between “where” and “wherefore.” “Our ensemble of leading ladies really get to shine and show the true range of their unique styles of humor. I love the quick changes, the pool noodles, the hiding behind arrases, everything! And if you are a fan of Hamlet, how Levine dances around the plot for maximum laughs is uniquely clever. But, of course, brevity is the soul of wit, so I’ll end with the hope that you enjoy the show,” Weymouth adds. Save Hamlet features Steven Coe (Hamlet), Chloe Elliott-Chan (Bernadette), Ariana Millan (Francesca)., Jania Boucher (Marcela), Guinevere Bortnicker Kiniry (Horatia), Gerrie Benzing (Gertrude), Eileen Little (Ophelia), Hanna Atkinson (Fortinbras), Terry Lavy (Ghost), Art Keen (Claudius), David Cooley (Laertes), Rick Sebastian (Polonius), Daniel Sabiston (Rosencrantz), Mark King (Guildenstern) and Zach Hendra (Osric/Voltemand). This show opens the theater’s summer season and is included in the season pass, which is currently on sale. While this play is rated for all ages, it does have some raunchy humor. Performance dates are June 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23 24 at 8 p.m. and June 4, 11, 18 at 2 p.m. Half-price previews will be May 31 and June 1 at 8 p.m. Teens get a free ticket to the performance on June 3 (reservations required.) A sensory friendly performance will be June 22 at 8 p.m. (with more information and guideChloe Elliott-Chan (Bernadette), Jania Boucher lines on the website) (Marcella), Guinevere Bortnicker Kiniry (Horatia), Tickets are $35 each or $10 for students with valid student IDs. There is a Eileen Little (Ophelia), and Ariana Millan (Francesca) new Thursday night special ticket price of $27 each for adults. Laboratory watch the hilarity from behind the arras. Players Circle Theater moving to new home
Players Circle Theater will be moving from its current home in North Fort Myers at the Shell Factory to the New Phoenix Theatre in the heart of the McGregor corridor in Fort Myers. “This is a dream come true. The Shell Factory has been a wonderful landing spot for us these past four years, but theater is a business and this new location is impossible to beat. We will be just a mile from Gulf Harbour, across the street from The Landings and surrounded by some of our area's finest restaurants. One board member said 'It’s better than downtown!' Which is so very true," said producing director and co-founder Carrie Lund Cacioppo. Players Circle Theater will be retaining its name, and rechristening the New Phoenix Theatre located at 13211 McGregor Blvd., #1 and "2. After the Danny Sinoff performance May 8, they began moving their $250,000 worth of lights, seats and risers to the new space. “We are incredibly grateful to New Phoenix founder, Brenda Kensler, for her support. We first heard she was contemplating throwing in the towel in midDecember. We met her, and she, being a truly generous woman of the theater, gave us her whole-hearted support. She literally cried at the thought of Carrie and I taking over the space and continuing her dream of bringing high quality theater to the area,“ said artistic director Robert Cacioppo. “There are so many pluses to the new space: It’s already zoned for public assembly and has generous well lit parking. It offers us a space we will totally control, beautiful restrooms exclusively

for our patrons, an area for rehearsals and for a shop to build our sets, dressing rooms with bathrooms, higher ceilings for better lighting, all things we currently don’t have at the Shell Factory. And to be in a location that 92,000 cars pass daily, well, that is a game changer for Players Circle.“ Players Circle Theater will officially take over the New Phoenix space on July 1 and begin its five-year lease. During the summer months of July, August and September, the necessary preparations will take place including interior renovations, preparing the space for production, installing new signage, advertising, selling tickets and subscription and securing artists. "We love the intimate theater we created at the Shell Factory and so did our audiences. A theater where no audience member is ever more than five rows from the action,” said Bob Cacioppo. "Robert and Carrie plan on creating a similar space in our new home which we know will thrill new and old patrons alike,” said board chairman Dr. Gerald Laboda. “We hope that the community will help us execute this dream by buying tickets, subscriptions and donating.” The new season will begin Oct. 17. Players Circle plans on keeping the theater running 12 months a year. At first with professional theater, then adding children’s programs, classes, music and comedy shows. Juried group exhibit at Davis Art Center
The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center announces two art exhibitions opening during Fort Myers Art Walk on Friday, June 2. The Key To Creativity, a group show with a call to artists for themed submissions, will be on display in the downstairs Grand Atrium of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Upstairs in the Capital Gallery, an exhibit called My Family Anti–Autobiography by artist Natalya Kochak will be featured. To highlight the SBDAC’s “Art Is Key” season, June’s juried art show, The Key To Creativity, asks participating artists to portray the key that unlocks their creativity. For some it can be a walk among nature, a sunset, meeting a new person, a conversation at a cafe. Or it can come from emotions on the other side of the spectrum, losing somebody, a breakup, depression, or moments when the artist encountered a creative block and found a way out of it. For this year's annual juried art show, the SBDAC will The Key to Creativity juried group art show opens June 2 display selected works of all media of the numerous keys at the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center. to creativity that artists discover, inspiring others who seek to better our world. Selected art will be exhibited in the Grand Atrium downstairs, and will be considered for $1,000 in prizes. Upstairs in the Capital Gallery, Natalya Kochak’s My Family Anti– Autobiography will be on display. Text, narrative, and image are rooted in individual and intrinsic cultural realities. Reading is Kochak’s safe place to attempt to learn about another person’s deepest thoughts and creativity. Reading is a place where minds merge to create vivid stories in color, but also a place that can become indoctrinated with cultural ideologies, where history can be shaded by non-truths and hypocrisy. Kochak’s work seeks to break down narratives, taking apart disorienting dialogue in books and looking more closely at images from history. Using her own familial history, art history, and conventional history, Kochak contemplates a trajectory forward from a past where part of her family was southern enslavers, and part descended from Ukrainian immigrants, inspiring My Family Anti-Autobiography.
Natalya Kochak
Kochak connected with Paula Whatley Matabane, a blood relative and the descendant of a slave woman and a white ancestor, and was given permission to use family photos to create a new, inclusive family. Carol Young at DAAS Co-Op Gallery ART
In the month of June, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the artwork of visual artist Carol Young. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 2 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through July 2. Carol Young graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Creative Communications, later moving to Alaska for what she describes as her “next adventure.” Young recollects that “the Alaska pipeline was just getting started and Fairbanks was a hive of activity which meant there was a need for more teachers.” She then taught secondary art for 30 years. During this time, she belonged to the Fairbanks Potters Guild, worked at the Woodway Gallery, and participated in various shows throughout the years. This guild participated in the Empty Bowls project which raised money for the food banks, all while maintaining a sales booth at the local farmers market. After 42 years in Alaska, Young decided to head south.
After settling in Southwest Florida, she continued working with glass fusing, watercolor, and clay – all classes and workshops offered at the Cape Coral Art Center. “Clay seems to be my addition.” – comments Young, who sees her work as a bit whimsical. “I like color and spontaneity and I feel that comes across [in my work].” – concluded the artist. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly Estates complex in Fort Myers. The gallery’s business hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information about the venue and how to become a member can be found at daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645.
Shell Point artists, writers reflect on Ian
When Hurricane Ian slammed into Fort Myers and the surrounding area on Sept. 28, 2022, the Shell Point Retirement Community was squarely in its path. Beginning with apprehensions at hearing of the storm’s projected path, through sheltering or watching from afar, to seeing a world of loss and experiencing recovery and healing, Shell Point residents were changed forever with this event. The newest exhibition in Tribby Arts Center, “Seven Months Since: Shell Point Artists and Writers Reflect on Ian,” invited resident artists and writers to express their experience and thoughts of the event. The exhibition is now on display and open to all free of charge in the Shell Point, Legacy, and Overlook Galleries of the Tribby through June 22. The exhibition displays artworks in a wide variety of mediums and printed photographs by 66 resident artists and photographers. The gallery screens also display digital photography by 14 resident photographers and written submissions—ranging from haikus to short narratives recounting the experience—by nine resident writers. According to Tribby curator Marge Lee, 14 - JUNE 2023
“Beginning Again” by Kurt Gulledge
the exhibition was planned when several artists suggested it could serve as a catharsis after the experience of Hurricane Ian. While resident artists and writers were not required to focus on this primary theme, said Lee, almost all did so. “Throughout the exhibition, the destruction of the storm is expressed,” said Lee, “but the prevailing impact of the display is optimism for the future.” The object selected as the signature image of the exhibi-
tion—a photograph titled “Beginning Again” (2023) by Kurt Gulledge—shows a broken branch with emerging new growth, pictured against a beautiful sky. “Seven Months Since” also displays a large kinetic artwork titled “Aurora” (2021) that was made by artisans of the Shell Point woodshop for a 2021 Tribby exhibition. The woodshop, a hub of activity for many woodworkers at Shell Point, experienced massive damage from Ian. As the shop only recently reopened, “Aurora” is encoring in “Seven Months Since” to represent the artisans who were unable to prepare entries for the exhibition. After viewing the exhibition on display, visitors also can visit Serendipity, the Shop in Tribby Arts Center that offers a wide variety of artist-made gift items and jewelry. Tribby Arts Center, which opened in 2021 on the campus of the Shell Point Retirement Community, is located at 17281 On Par Blvd. in Fort Myers. The galleries and Serendipity are open free of charge to all from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For further information, visit www.shellpoint.org or call 1-800-780-1131. designs have quickly become a fashion want in SW Florida thus nominating her for a Distinguished Entrepreneur Award for 2022. “Life is a fragile, beautiful thing.
I work within this fragility to craft original handmade baskets, clothes and jewelry pieces to last for generations. I have been attracted to the idea since I was a child, inspired by my ancestors, who were small business owners that cared for the well being of our African communities. Now I am bringing these pieces of art to the U.S. from Africa to share our culture and legacy. My pieces balance the delicacy of life and resiliency within each of us. I use materials and designs from Africa to help support women owned businesses by having them craft and develop my design ideas. Our pieces are simple, colorful and one of a kind,” says Jessica. Joan Sonnenberg exhibit at Alliance for the Arts ART
The Alliance for the Arts invites the public to its opening reception for Joan Sonnenberg: A Retrospective on June 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. The free event features works by Joan Sonnenberg and Christian de Jesus, as well as light refreshments. The exhibits will be on display June 16 - July 29. Born in 1930 in Chester, Pa., Joan Brechin Sonnenberg became interested in art at the age of 5, and this passion has continued throughout her life. The 92-year-old artist maintains her lifelong daily art practice and four-mile walks to this day. Interested in geometric patterns achieved through multiple reverse etching processes, Joan superimposes and stacks up to ten images on top of each other, creating a complex montage of lines, shapes and patterns. She strives to alter and combine abstraction with realism: Capturing marks made over time through human intervention; the mundane, decaying worn objects, dumpsters and wall graffiti. She also portrays street people, each imbued with stories to tell. She strives to convey the harmonious coexistence of abstraction and realism, transcending and encompassing both doctrines.
Receptions and gallery tours are open to the public and do not require tickets or reservations. While the gallery admission is free, a $5 suggested donation keeps the Alliance programming affordable and accessible. The theatre lobby gallery will feature the works of Christian de Jesus, an artist from Fort Myers who has placed and won in many art shows in the area. His medium of choice is acrylic paint on canvas or cardboard, but he also uses clay and spray paints on occasion. His art work introduces a deep look into real world things such as life and death. His art takes inspiration from artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Choe, Andy Warhol, and movies like, Halloween, House of 1000 Corpses, and Girl interrupted. The Member Gallery walls will be covered with artwork from each session of Summer Arts Camps participants. Each session runs two weeks, with art rotating on the same schedule. The Alliance for the Arts is located at 10091 McGregor Blvd. just south of Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers. For more information, call 239-939-2787, visit at www.ArtInLee.org, find them on Facebook, Instagram or follow them on Twitter.

Young SW Florida artist nominated for two awards as first album is set to drop
Southwest Florida’s Charlie Pace is getting ready for her first studio album to be released and was recently nominated for two Josie Awards. Her first album “Hear Me Out” is scheduled for release June 15 by Sony Orchard. It was recorded and produced by Ray Nesbit of RPM Studio in Naples. Local musicians on the album also included David C. Johnson and Darrell Nutt. Ray and Charlie have been working together for about five or six years. Charlie’s first single “Blue Eyes” was released when she was just 15. Ray speaks highly of the young artist. “She blew my mind” when she first entered his studio years ago. “I knew I could trust Ray. We have a crazy balance,” adds Charlie. Recently, Charlie was nominated for two Josie Awards: Artist of the Year Multi-Genre (female) and Vocalist of the Year Multi-Genre. The mission of the Josie Music Awards is to honor, recognize and reward excellence, outstanding talents, and remain focused on the creativity across the independent music industry. Every submission is carefully reviewed for consideration by an all-pro-panel of judges since 2015. They acknowledge all music genres, and each are celebrated through one winner in each genre in many of the categories. The ninth annual Josie Music Awards will be held on Oct. 22 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. Charlie Pace, a 19 year old singer-songwriter from the Florida Everglades, learned her love of music at a young age. With her orange hair and crazy fun clothes, she is Influenced by Nirvana, Paramore, Aretha Franklin, Joanie Mitchell, David Bowie and others. Charlie sings from deep in her soul with a raspy rock sound. Some say she has a soulful vocal sound similar to blues artist Beth Hart. Growing up between two homes and having musical influences in both, she was always surrounded by music. She
knew very young that music would always be her life. Then when she first sang the National Anthem and got the lead part in her first school concert at the age of 8, she knew that all she wanted to do was sing. Charlie has suffered great losses at a very young age, but she uses her music to persevere. She writes and sings beyond all boundaries crossing genre lines and doesn't let the past control her life, because her music is her outlet so she writes. A soft, gentle, soulful, young woman and a dynamic explosive force on stage, she captures the attention of everyone. When she is not doing solo gigs or working in the studio, Charlie performs with her two bands…the Charlie Pace Band (funk and rock) and CAAM (punk rock). To learn more about Charlie, visit online at www.charliepacemusic.com or follow her on social media
